An early look at the Heisman race
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Now that the preseason meetings are over and the teams are heading to training camp, it’s time to start breaking down players by position.
But before we do that, let’s jump into this with a bang. Here is one man’s early look at the race for the Heisman Trophy.
Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas: Finished second last season to Troy Smith of Ohio State, so it is his trophy to lose as the 2007 season begins. He rushed for 1,647 yards (5.8 per carry) last season but McFadden also showed his versatility by lining up at quarterback in Arkansas’s “Wildcat” formation, where he completed 7 of 9 passes. That kind of talent captures the imagination of Heisman voters. McFadden’s first big test: Sept. 15 at Alabama. If he can put up a good number against a rebuilding Crimson Tide defense, he will be off and running,
John David Booty, QB, Southern Cal: The mere fact that Booty is the starting quarterback for the Trojans, who will begin the season at No. 1, gives him a big leg up in the race. If Southern Cal runs the table and Booty’s numbers are in the same ballpark (3,347 yards, 29 TD) as last season, he could edge out McFadden for the award. Southern Cal already has three Heisman winners (Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush) since 2002. Some voters may be impressed by the glamour of the position and the school and vote for Booty over McFadden, particularly if the Arkansas team struggles.
Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville: If Booty is the best quarterback in the country then Brohm is a very, very close second. Despite missing two games with a thumb injury last season, Brohm passed for 3,049 yards and 16 touchdowns. He only threw five interceptions. What we don’t know is how Brohm will adjust to new head coach Steve Kragthorpe, who replaced Bobby Petrino. But if he can get near the 4,000-yard mark in passing, he’ll get a lot of votes.
Ray Rice, RB, Rutgers: The country fell in love with Rutgers last season and this season they will fall in love with Rice, who rushed for 1,794 yards in 2006. Rutgers has a chance to get off to a good start as the Knights play Buffalo, Navy, Norfolk State, Maryland, Cincinnati, Syracuse and South Florida before they face West Virginia. Rutgers gets West Virginia at home after a week off. That will be the game where Rice defines his chance for the Heisman. The voters in the East need somebody to pull for. Rice is their guy.
Percy Harvin, WR, Florida: Because of injuries, Harvin only scratched the surface of his immense talent last season. Not enough voters nationally know about this guy so winning the Heisman is a long shot at best. But trust me when I tell you he’s one of the most talented athletes to play football in the SEC in the past 20 years. Urban Meyer told me that he stays awake at night trying to figure how many different ways the Gators can get Harvin the ball. If Harvin stays healthy all season, he’ll be the cornerstone of a Florida team that can make a run at the national championship in 2008.
HONORABLE MENTION:
Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii: Will put up huge numbers in June Jones’ offense, but everybody will be asleep on the mainland while he’s doing it.
Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU: I know defensive guys don’t win this award but Dorsey should be considered. He may be the best player in college football, offense or defense.
Mike Hart, RB, Michigan: When Hart stays healthy, Michigan is a very good football team. Wolverines could be a contender for the BCS championship. If Hart equals his 2006 numbers (1,562 yards, 14 TD) he could get to New York.
Colt McCoy, QB, Texas: McCoy was so impressive as a freshman (2,570 yards, 25 TD) that fellow freshman Javan Snead saw the handwriting on the wall and transferred to Ole Miss. McCoy is now ready to have a big year as a sophomore and make a real run at the Heisman as a junior.
Steve Slaton, RB, West Virginia: Could get in the top five and get to New York if the Mountaineers go 12-0. Ran for 1,744 yards and 16 touchdowns last season.

McFadden should have won last year and will be the best this year.
Look for the 3 finalists to be McFadden, Brohm, and Slaton.

If Stafford can engineer the kinds of wins he did in the last 3 games of the season, cut down on the turnovers, and get some help from his receivers, there is no reason he shouldn’t be turning heads for Heisman talk in ‘08. This year probably too soon, though.

I think it is a little early to consider Stafford. Just to bring you back down to earth. Reggie Ball had a better freshmen year, and Reggie helped Georgie beat tech in his freshmen year alot more than Stafford did. HAHA. Rashard Choice is the most underrated back in College. He will be a canidate on everyone’s top 5 by mid season. Why? He dominated the ACC last year and slashed through some of the best defenses in the country. Tech also has one of the best offensive lines this year. A veteran offensive coordinator who’s back last year lead the country in yards, and last but not least we have a QB this year. They may be retiring Reggie’s jersey over in athens, but they want be retiring Taylor. Watch and see.

Tashard will be the Choice in December. Some of you people really need to find something else to do. To say Booty and McCoy aren’t Heisman candidates is a matter of opinion but to completely run them down and put Stafford in front of them is deluional. Stafford had a hard enough time holding onto his own job last year and you pups are going to make him a Heisman candidate this year; you must have taken a severe blow to the head as a young child. One guy on Tony’s list that is really good though is Slaton from WV. He runs bigger than he looks, has speed to burn, and plays in an offense built on deception that gives him plenty of chances for big plays.

I wish the Heisman would stop being a popularity contest and start being an award to the best player in the nation. At least 3 of the last 6 winners were not deserving at all (Troy Smith, Jason White, Eric Crouch). All the old yankee Heisman voters need to get their heads out of their 80-year-old New England butts and pay attention to the games, not just the media and ESPN.
If i was a betting man, I’d put my money on Booty. Why? Because he plays quarterback for USC. That’s the only reason he would win. If they go undefeated, he’ll win for sure. That’s the sad truth about the state of the Heisman trophy now. There will be MUCH better QBs this fall (Brian Brohm, Colt Brennan, Chase Holbrook, Pat White, Tim Tebow, Andre Woodson, probably even Matt Stafford). It should be McFadden’s award to lose, he is probably the best player in the country and he does his stuff against the best defenses in the nation.
Watch and enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbMw4tOM1Io

McFadden will be the guy this year. Harvin as talented as he is better be careful. As good as he is he will get his block knocked off and face more injuries. That’s the thing that bothers me about Stafford and Tebow running so much. SEC has the powerful D backs that can HIT. Next up would be be Slaton if he can stay healthy.

booty will win if usc is in line for the nc. the media blitz from the west coast will take care of his rivals. how many voters will see mcfadden unless ark wins the west? the award is not for the country’s best player, it goes to the player on a nc contender that gets the most hype.

Choice is a great back but still not good enough to win the Heisman. Choice or McFadden…I think it’s an easy decision who you’d rather have running the ball for your team. Put Stafford and Tebow’s name in there in 2008 or 2009, given they both have good seasons this year. It’s just not realistic until then.

If Rutgers can open up there passing game, you’ll see incredible numbers out of Rice. His number were second best last year and everyone knew he was getting the ball all the time. I believe he carried the ball more than anyone last year. He has incredible stamina.

Darren McFadden, if healthy all season, will probably win it this year. Although no player usually wins it unless the team has an over-all good season, which is a question-mark for ARK. And not trying to ‘bust’ any of you TECHies bubbles, but McFadden is light-years better than Tashard Choice. Choice left OU because Petterson was better. McFadden is waaay better than both of them.

Ummm……..what? Ole ball coach is crazy. Stafford is by far this best qb at georgia. Probable the best they have ever had. But Stafford will not be mentioned to win heisman. You actually have to win double digits to win heisman and with a crappy o-line and receivers who could drop a beach ball ain’t no way in heck he wins heisman. AJ Green is going to be reason Stafford wins heisman if he ever does.
Choice isn’t in the same league as the guys mentioned above he will break ELI’s record.
Booty stats speak for themselves. Don’t be ridiculous ignorant ugag fans and get your heads out of you mutt asses.

The ranking mentioned above is one journalist’s opinion. Geeze, get over it and move on. We have a long, long season to go and I would rather take a victory any day over a Heisman candidate running for mayor. The Heisman is a joke. if CJ didn’t win it last year, then the Heisman clearly didn’t mirror the best player in college football. Its a popularity contest…..
By Charles

GT=Joke moron, your team’s record against a rival has no bearing on the heisman. Calvin didn’t win it because he was a receiver and you have to put up 200 yard games to win it. That’s not happening with a qb like Ball. Mark this: no receiver will win the heisman in the next ten years.
This year I think while McFadden is a nasty player, best in the SEC and probably in the country, Booty is my favorite. He’s on a loaded team and we all know the huge crush the media has on USC. The only way Harvin sniffs the top 5 is if Florida turns him into a running threat and he blows up in the return game. Even then, I wouldn’t count on it.

Darren McFadden is the best overall athlete that I have seen in college football for some time now. He runs a 4.3 40 or lower and can catch and throw the football. He has a nasty stiff arm and a second burst that is freakish. If Arkansas had Matt Jones on that team last year it would have been fun to watch. BTW…Felix Jones would start for anybody else in the country at RB. I like Booty, but my god Darren McFadden is a freak.

What team wouldn’t get off to a good start playing those cupcakes?
If Darren McFadden has the kind of year he did in 2006 he should win the Heisman hands down. Look at the competition McFadden is up against week in and week out. Compare the SEC gauntlet to what Rice, Brohm, and Booty face. What a joke! There is no difficulty of schedule factored in…it’s just a numbers game and media hype.

McFadden is a great player. However he will have to at least equal last years numbers on team that is in disarray and won’t come close to the success it had last year.
As mentioned McFadden is a great player and will be a great pro. However, McFadden WOULD NOT start at WVU.
Steve Slaton is by far the best back in the country. His problem is his numbers will be messed up because Pat White will get alot of votes. White is the best QB in the country and he will prove that this season.
To have a Heisman Top 5 and not have one of the Top 4 finalist from a year ago in it has to be an oversight. If not, it’s just plain dumb.

You guys in the south give way to much credit to Mcfadden and give Slaton not enough credit! He had 1 bad hand all year long and Percey Harvin over Pat White who you didn’t even mention you guys in the south must smoke some killer stuff down that way to not have them in the running. They both may end up in NY if they go 12-0. i’ll give you credit that the SEC is king in FB then after that it is a toss up with the ACC comming in last of all BCS conferancs.

I think it’s absured that yiu don’t have Steve Slaton in the top 2 or 3, much less the top 5! he is arguably the best running back in the nation! He even had more yars than Mcfadden did last year. He was MVP of the Sugar Bowl 2 seasons ago and ran for more than 200 yards on an SEC defense! Plus he will have a lot more yards this year with more touches and knows the offense inside and out. Once he gets past the defensive backs, no one will touch him. You have a WR from FL who you even say is a long shot to win the Hiesman this year in your tiop 5. That shows me how much you know about the Heisman race.

Obvious a sore loser/partisan perspective. Whether or not you favor Georgia or Georgia Tech it is an obvious slight to leave Pat White and Steve Slaton off of your top 5. West Virginia behind both of these two dominant players will mop up the Big East and win the National Championship and most likely against a PAC10 or Big Ten competitor not a weak ACC or over rated SEC. Don’t vote for them, it will only make everything they accomplish this year that much sweeter!

Some goob from notre lame or usc or ohio state is going to win it…why?…becuase the media is going to hype the winner they want to win. Then the media is going to pick the winner and those three schools are the media darlings. As evidence that everyone buys into the media hype without checking the facts, look at all the folks including the writer of this article who pick McFadden and mention Slaton as an after thought. Check out this link and then tell me I’m wrong. I don’t know if Slaton will win it or not (White may take too many votes from him) but Slaton is clearly a better college back than McFadden. Notice I said college back…the Heisman is for the most valuable college player right. McFadden may do better than Slaton at the next level but Slaton was by far the better back last year.

You obviously failed to do adequate homework for your piece. By nearly every account except yours, West Virginia has two backs capable of winning the Heisman. And they have better yardage, particularly yards per carry, than any of those you mentioned. That’s O.K. They won’t be lacking in attention because you didn’t mention them. Just remember the names at the end of the season: Pat White, quarterback, and Steve Slaton, tailback.

Slaton is an outstanding back. But in no way is he superior to McFadden. He does prolly have a better chance in the Heisman considering he plays in the Big East(not the SEC), has a quarterback that can give his team an appearance of a passing game, and plays on a team that spreads everyone out. Yet McFadden still came in 2nd last year not Slaton, and did all that with 8 defenders in the box at all times. Against LSU (one of the best defense in the nation) with his QB completeing 3 or 4 passes he went for 180. So yes he is the best running back in the nation by quite a bit but he has no passing game to back him up and plays in the best conference in college football. Oh yeah and about stealing limelight he also plays with Felix Jones another 1000 yard rusher who on any other team would be mentioned in this list as well.
