Ranking SEC’s best defenders
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I thought I had a tough assignment yesterday when I picked the top five offensive players in the SEC that I would pay to see. That was a piece of cake compared to today’s effort, which is choosing the top five defensive players. Here is my best shot. Feel free to take yours.
1. Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU. First team All-America. First team All-SEC. First team all-world. He is that good. He was the man on a defense that was No. 3 in the nation, giving up only 242.8 yards per game. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has called Dorsey “the best player in college football” heading into the 2007 season. LSU gave up only 97.1 yards rushing per game last season. Dorsey is why.
2. Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida. Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith is still having nightmares about this guy. He was the defensive MVP of the BCS championship game and led the Gators in sacks last season with 11. He is one of only two returning starters on defense at Florida.
3. Jasper Brinkley, LB, South Carolina. Brinkley is another guy who could have turned pro but wanted to play his senior season. The Georgia native had 107 total tackles in 2006. His 85 solo tackles are more than any returning defensive player in the SEC this season.
4. Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn. Groves has 23 career sacks and only needs four this season to become Auburn’s all-time leader. This guy is almost impossible to block. Opposing defenses have to account for him on every single play.
5. Jerod Mayo, LB, Tennessee. If Mayo had not hurt his knee late in the season, he would have made several All-America teams. He had three games last season in which he posted 12 tackles. Mayo’s a junior and if he stays healthy, he’ll be one of the best linebackers in the country.
HONORABLE MENTION
— Jonathon Goff, LB, Vanderbilt. Goff has played in 34 career games and has started 28 straight for Vanderbilt. His 194 career tackles rank third among active SEC players. Commodores coach Bobby Johnson says he is as good as any linebacker who has ever played at Vanderbilt.
— Jonathon Hefney, DB, Tennessee. Hefney can do it all. He had 96 tackles last season to finish second on the team. He averaged 12.1 yards per punt return.
— Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU. Because of Dorsey, Jackson doesn’t get that much ink. But he is good. Very good.
— Derek Pegues, DB, Mississippi State. Great defensive back (four interceptions last season) and great kick returner who averaged 21.9 yards per kickoff and 13.5 yards per punt return over his career.
— Wesley Woodyard, LB, Kentucky. Posted 122 tackles last season and named All-SEC first team by the coaches. Will start the season with a cast after breaking his left hand.

Tony, Appreciate the info but why is it necessary to write “Jasper Brinkley…The Georgia native”? Why didn’t you put Derrick Harvey…the Maryland native or Quentin Groves… the Mississippi native or Jerod Mayo…the Virginia native? I don’t know what I (or others) are to make of this information. That because he is a GA native why isn’t he a UGA player? I’m sure come the week of the UGA-USC game that we will (for the humpteenth time) have to read about all the players on USC’s roster who were “dissed” by UGA and how they have an ax to grind. Suggestion… try a new approach and write about the SC recruits who are on UGA’s roster and want to kick the chicken $#*@ out of USC.

Tony, please make a list of best kickers next time. We would like to have UGA represented at some point on one of your prestigious listings.
BTW, did Fulmer actually recruit Mayo or did he call him by mistake thinking he was ordering a sandwich? “Gotta have mayo on it”

Jasper Brinkley is the epitomy of the mistakes of RODNEY GARNER. It took the Thomson twins going with Spurrier for Garner to finally recruit GMC instead of using it as a place players are demoted. Durant and Wheeler of Ga. Tech are other examples of leaving top talent on the table. Rodney, with the Brinkleys, you don’t lose to vandy and kentucky last year. Brandon Miller is not that good.

The reason we missed out on Brinkley is because we only wanted Jasper and they were a package deal. Plus they were juco players and at that time we were stocked at LB & DE and it is such an “admissions hurdle” to get juco players to UGA unless there is a shortage of players for that position and then we seem to leap that hurdle w/ ease.

Did it ever cross your mind that JUST MAYBE Brinkley was mentioned as being a Georgia native b/c the AJC is the biggest newspaper in THE STATE OF GEORGIA? GOOD GRIEF MAN! I’m positive a Florida paper would give mention to all its STATE players too, its called Journalism 101. Now go wash your _

To Damon and Rodney Garner: why do we need an expensive airplane to fly around the country to recruit players? All you have to do is drive to Thomson if you want linebackers (Brinkleys) or Buford if you want running backs (Walker). Just because you are finally making a little money doesn’t mean spend, spend, spend. Just go to GMC and bring the guys from Lincoln County to UGA that deserve to be there. Quit harping on grades, Lenoard Pope certainly ain’t too bright and nobody complained there.

Well said Don. The level of insecurity in Georgia fans is reaching historic heights. I imagine having a front row seat for the recent work of the dominant Florida program has really gotten to them. Apparently everyone is out to get them now. Ridiculous. Living in Atlanta has completely opened my eyes to the ridiculousness of UGA supporters. I’m not sure how much more ‘next year’ or ‘Stafford is the best…’ talk I can take. Next year will never come, and make sure to post Spooner’s TD-Int ratio whenever you make a comment about it him. I’m sure it’ll make it more credible…

Don’t be jealous that Mayo and Hefney are better than your Georgia boys. And for that matter, Fulmer being a solid coach, thus leading to your dislike. Nobody dislikes you if you are bad, but if you are good, thats a different story. Good rankings and I would agree with them.

UGA would have lost to Vandy last year regardless. They will lose to them again this year. Matter of fact, Georgia will probably end up fifth in the SEC East. They are horrible and the schedule is not kind.

TB— I don’t think UGA will have much this year. I’m a big fan but reality tells me this is just going to be a down year— which is kinda surprising to me given all the good recruiting classes they have had. Could you please provide a rundown on UGA by position and the status of all these highly regarded recruits of the last 2-3 years. The impression out here is that many either did not qualify academically, have since flunked out or quit, or have not been as good as advertised. How can a program like UGA be so shallow on depth last year and now even worse this year? Is it all a matter of “record”— both academically and criminally?

If the Brinkley twins have a great year Thomson will then be identified as a “suburb of Atlanta” by the AJC and ESPN. They did that with Chatsworth when Maryland had a Murray Co. QB a few years back. After all there is nothing in Georgia but Atlanta if you listen to the big city media. At least Tony knows better. I’m glad UGA has no pre-season All-SEC picks. It is meaningless just like pre-season team rankings. Even so if they go 7-5 all you will hear is how the team underachieved, yet they had no preseason accolades. The AJC and bloggers won’t mention that in November unless UGA wins 10+. Then it will be an amazin’ success story.

UGA isn’t nervous about playing anyone this year. Shoot!, the SEC east is wide open…bia$$$es. I don’t understand why USC thinks they are definately going to win. Do they not remember what has happened to them the past 5 years? And last year was an 18-0 shutout of the ol’ ball coach. We made him like like a bi$$h. Spurrier can only beat UGA as the UF head coach. period. Believe me, I am NOT worried about USC, only UF because of the Jaxville curse.

Hey dawg fans don’t be mad at Tony because ya’ll lack any star players on defense. WAKE UP! Georgia’s best years are behind them. When ya’ll had the best players (Donnan Era) ya’ll couldn’t win. Now everyone else in the league has good players so this ACC offense isn’t gonna work in the SEC. Have fun with another seven win season. But hey at least Georgia won a championship in 1980, and you always can say “wait until next year.”

Auburn always gets quality players have out of Georgis, but this year it slowed down to signing only four. Mark Richt does a very good job recruiting, but is the only coach who has not won or played for a National Championship being right on top with Yexas, LSU, Tenn.Florida and Ohio State in national recriuting ratings.. USC stand out above all in last five years. I think UGA(9-3)will have good year, like Auburn( 9-3 or 8-4) OL questions.JUST BEAT BAMA

To answer the question above regarding “What ever happened to Casper?” He tied for the lead in sacks last season for the Gamecocks with 7 1/2 and also led the team in tackles for loss as a DE. He is being moved to OLB this season and will team with his brother Jasper to eat your lunch come September. I will be back on here to discuss then if you dare to appear.

Guy’s you can put your loaded mouses down now and since everyone is 0-0-0 the typical smack can be spread (seems to always be loudest from the SC crowd who are always SEC champs until the third week in September) but who knows the SEC East should be a wide open race and I wouldn’t be shocked if even KY was in the hunt!( I expect they are going to at least play the spoiler for someone in the East) I expressed my honest opinion on Tony’s comments and I am fully aware that the AJC “was” the premier rag in the state. I have $$$$ that there will be at least one article prior to the USC game that will prove my point on the GA guys who are currently on the USC roster. Any takers?!

Gator you keep dreaming and this is only the preseason which doesn’t mean a thing. At the end of the season we will know who played great and who did not. Besides you need to pay attention to your own team’s woes as Urban said at the SEC Media day that he has seen some chinks in the armour when talking about your team.

To all of you DAWGS hater, why don’t you all say something nice somtimes? We know we are in a down year, and were overlooked. Believe me we are trying to pick ourselves up just to be respectable (by ypur standard). We at UGA will never go tell kids we have 100 Scholarships to give, and if you sign with us you all get to play rightaway. If you care for a true football fan role model look at WAREAGLE for example. Enjoy your bandwagon of riding high, and if you can’t quit putting down my dawgs, bandage your mouths with a used kotex would help

If i remember correctly UGA didnt recruit JUCO players due to something internal. It was an academic or admissions issue. CMR really had to push hard to get this years JUCOs accepted. The brinkley brothers wanted to play together in college, and i believe UGA only wanted Jasper. they were a package deal.

What’s all this talk about UGA always saying “next year”. We’ve had an elite program ever since Richt arrived, and ESPN justed rated UGA as the #11 program in the nation over the last decade. Also, our winning percentage ranks among the TOP 5 in the nation under Richt, so all this “UGA always says ‘next year’ talk is pretty retarded. 2 SEC titles, 6 straight wins over Tech (the KINGS of “next year” ramblings). Winning 5 of the last 7 over UT. Kicking the crap out of the Cocks every year. The ONLY school that has legitimate bragging rights over UGA right now is Florida; and they will until the Dawgs can string together 3 straight against them (which might not happen until Meyer goes to the NFL, if ever.) The Inferiority complexes the Techies and other SEC schools is laughable. Dawgs had a horrible year by our standards last year, and still beat Tech and won 9 games (3 straight against ranked opponents to end the year). So, yes, every “next year” under Richt could legitimately be a championship year, because GA is an elite program. Tech will never break through to that level. Eat UGA’s poop, chumps. Go DAWGS.
