ACC’s best non-conference matchups

Here are the top five non-conference games in the ACC for 2007. Like the SEC, we stayed away from the traditional non-conference rivalries.

1. Virginia Tech at LSU, Sept. 8. Two of the nation’s best defenses will slug it out at Tiger Stadium before a national TV audience. After this game, Hokies coach Frank Beamer will know exactly what kind of team he has.

2. Georgia Tech at Notre Dame, Sept. 1. A year ago the Fighting Irish came from behind to beat the Yellow Jackets 14-10 in Atlanta. This time Georgia Tech hope to return the favor as the Irish will be breaking in a new quarterback.

3. Florida State vs. Alabama in Jacksonville, Sept. 29. It’s hard to count all the good storylines in this game. FSU coach Bobby Bowden grew up in Birmingham and idolized Alabama legend Bear Bryant. He almost became the head coach at Alabama in 1987. Trust us: Winning this game will be a big deal to Bowden — and to Alabama.

4. Miami at Oklahoma, Sept. 8. The Hurricanes go to Norman to take on a team that will be in just about everybody’s preseason top 10. It will be a huge early test for new coach Randy Shannon.

5. West Virginia at Maryland, Sept. 13. West Virginia will be consensus pick to win the Big East and has the schedule to go 12-0 and play for the BCS championship. But the Mountaineers will have to win at College Park on what promises to be a very loud Thursday night at Byrd Stadium.

Until we beat the puppies we have absolutely no creditability. At the present time it is not a rivalry game because there is no rivalry. We have been dominated. Hopefully that changes this year.

I’m anxious to know if the Tickle Pile controversy swirling around the Institute will have an impact on the team. Chan should have made sure that no players were involved. I know it was a small percentage of the team but it WILL have an impact.

What is this “Tickle Pile” I keep reading about?

It’s hard to believe that something so ridiculous is true but it’s a real problem at Tech despite the fact that some here are denying it. Check with the Fulton County Health Dept. if you want the facts.

Geez….a storied team like Nebraska visiting ACC Champ Wake Forest on Sep 8 belongs somewhere on this list….Probably the biggest game ever in Winston…….

technicelly GT vs uga is a non conference game, but since the game is played every year I dont consider it a non conference game. The same with FSU vs UF. Thats why Barnhartdidnt put it on the list and should not have put UWV vs UM.

Re: Tech-UGA, read Barnhart’s first paragraph.

A tickle pile is something that trolls do, if you want to know.

Maybe the UGA blogs offer a can of Skoal and a clean spit cup to the one who can FIRST POST! a reference to a tickle pile. Dang dog-nerds…

That is why there is no UGA/GT. It looks like Sept. 8th will be a great weekend to watch games. How rare to find so many big non-conference match-ups this early.

I think the tickle pile they are referring to has to do with Stafford snuggling with Cox at Dega a couple of months ago.

middlebee - How can you claim that WVU vs. UMD is a traditional non-conference rival? That’s terrible. Not only are they not in the same state, but until 2 years ago, WVU considered Virginia Tech their #1 rival…followed closely by Pitt. That would make UMD their 3rd (at best) rivalry. Just because they’ve played a bunch of times in bowls and regular season in the past 4 years doesn’t make it a rivalry.

Tickle pile refers to the prayer sessions that the UGAg players hold with their coach once they are incarcerated in the Athens-Clarke County Jail. As you can see, it happens quite often. Lots of tickle goes on….

Barnhart has it right!

UGA vs. GA Tech has become irrelavent. It just doesn’t matter. For starters, it is played too late in the season. Bowl selection committees already know more-or-less which teams will be going to their respective bowls. And, it certainly doesn’t matter to the BCS bowls because they are mostly for conference champs and this is a non-conference game.

This game currently seems to matter primarily to ugag loser fans. The reason is because it is only this game that gives them anything to ‘crow’ about since they cannot get into the SEC championship game and they also cannot win their conference main rival game against UF.

Most of the Tech fans are smart enough to realize that this is only a non-conference game and means little in the big picture. We would much rather play in the conference championship game than to beat ugay.

Not sure if you’re a Tech fan or not, but if you are, you’re a disgrace. I would take beating UGA every year over the ACC title game. Hopefully, if we were good enough to beat UGA every year, then we would make it to some ACC title games as well, but for the love of all things right in this world…

First, foremost, and forevermore….

WHAT’S THE GOOD WORD???

just me. please take a second to learn something about college football before you waste our time with a stupid post. the only reason this game wasn’t listed was because it’s played every year not because it’s irrelevent. Beating UGA means everything to Tech. how could someone post that georgia only likes beating tech because they can’t get to the SEC Championship game or win it. are you serious? YOUR AN IDIOT.

UGA GT? Always a rivalry, it’s not about the teams, it’s about you people right here on this posting. It’s July for goodness sakes are y’all are hot under the collar for a game four months from now. That’s a rivalry.

And damn that Mark Richt, we have lost to that man for 15 straight years…what a friggin curse! At least when we were getting creamed by him at FSU, he was winning/competing for the national championship every year. Whereas the bulldogs seem to steal close games out of thin air (2004 not withstanding).

GO JACKETS!!!!!!
