Sizing up the ACC quarterbacks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s time to rank the top five quarterbacks in the ACC as we head into the 2007 season. Some of the guys on this list struggled last season but we are looking for them to bounce back under new offensive coordinators.
1. Matt Ryan, Sr., Boston College. Ryan led the ACC last season in passing yards (2,942) and yards per game (245.2). Ryan was the All-ACC first team quarterback in 2006 and enters his senior season with a record of 14-4 as a starter. Ryan may have an even better year under Steve Logan, BC’s new offensive coordinator.
2. Riley Skinner, Soph., Wake Forest. Skinner was supposed to be a backup last season but when Ben Mauk was knocked out for the year in the Deacons’ first game, Skinner led Wake Forest to the ACC championship and became the league’s rookie of the year. He was the ACC’s most efficient passer, completing 65 percent of his throws.
3. Drew Weatherford, Jr., Florida State. Weatherford threw 12 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions last season but that will change under Jimbo Fisher, the Seminoles’ new offensive coordinator. Weatherford had the fourth highest passing total in the ACC (2,099 yards) last season. The kid has talent. He needs for somebody to teach him how to play the position. If Weatherford doesn’t come through, he will be pushed for playing time by Xavier Lee.
4. Kyle Wright, Sr., Miami. Ditto for Wright, who only had eight touchdown passes (seven interceptions) last season but who will be better this fall under the tutelage of new OC Patrick Nix. Wright completed a decent percentage (60.8) last season but he has got to get Miami into the end zone. The Hurricanes were eighth in the ACC in scoring last season (19.6 ppg). Wright is going to be pushed by Kirby Freeman if he doesn’t produce.
5. Jameel Sewell, Soph., Virginia. He may be a surprise pick to some but Sewell has a chance to be really good if Virginia’s offensive line rounds into shape. As a true freshman Sewell became the starter in the fourth game of 2006. His numbers weren’t staggering (1,342 yards, five TDs) but he only threw six interceptions in 247 attempts, which isn’t bad for a first year player. It won’t help that Virginia’s best receiver, Kevin Ogletree, will miss the 2007 season with an injury.
HONORABLE MENTION
— Cullen Harper/Willy Korn, Clemson. Harper came out of spring practice at No. 1 as he was efficient in running Rob Spence’s offense. But Korn is the blue-chip recruit who enrolled in school early and took part in spring practice. Keep an eye on him.
— Thaddeus Lewis, Soph., Duke. Was thrust into action as a true freshman after starter Zack Asack was suspended from school (plagiarism). Threw for 2,134 yards but had 16 interceptions. Will have battle Asack (who is back on the team) for the starting job.
— Taylor Bennett, Jr., Georgia Tech. After throwing for 326 yards in the Gator Bowl, there are high hopes for Bennett. Now he has to prove he can run the offense without WR Calvin Johnson. Bennett should fare well under new OC John Bond.

I’m not sure Miami will get much better with Wright as a Sr. Also I’m not sure what Nix will be able to contribute. He’s just had a few months with him.

Since it is the beginning of the season, I will give you the benefit of the doubt, since you have not gotten to see the best of Taylor Bennett. For those of us who have been to practices and watched his brief stints in some games in the past two years, we know what he is capable of. Before the year is over, I expect him to top Wright and Weatherford(two of the most overrated QB’s in college football). Seriously, the only reason why anyone still talks about those two guys are because they play for what use to be two powerhouses. Jimbo Fisher has his work cut out for him.

“tutelage of new OC Patrick Nix” That’s the first time I’ve heard that in a sentence. Pretty pathetic rankings if you ask me. Not a real impressive bunch for the ACC to trot out this year.

Secondly, I’m not sure how Sean Glennon doesn’t even make the list. He’s a lot more proven then some of these other guys. Terrible job, Tony.

John Bond will make no difference as long as Chan Gailey wears a headset. We sucked with Suggs at QB. We sucked with Ball at QB. We will suck with Bennett at QB. As long as we have the worst coach in the history of college football, it wouldn’t matter if we had Johnny Unitas or Peyton Manning. Gailey would ruin them too. He needs to be fired today.

How does Nix showing up mean Wright will be better? Wright is a perenial underachiever and Nix could not get out of town fast enough for me as a Tech fan. I mean, Nix has such a great job of developing QBs in the past, right? No, maybe not. He had 4 years with Reggie and did not develop him at all. How is he supposed to make Wright better in just a few months. Wright should be ranked about 8th in the conference. And no way Sewell is better than Bennett or either of the Clemson kids.

Wright is a mediocre QB at best. UM fans will agree. The guy that replaced him late last season looked at least as good, if not at times better than Wright. He’ll be replaced by mid-season.

OK, SO AS A MIAMI GUY, I WILL HAVE TO AGREE KYLE WRIGHT HAS TO GO, AND NO OC FROM TECH IS GOING TO MAGICALLY REDUCE HIS INABILITY TO LEAD. (THINK REGGIE BALL…) HE JUST LOOKS SCARED! KIRBY FREEMAN IS SLIGHTLY BETTER, BUT I AM AFRAID IT MAY BE A YEAR OR TWO BEFORE WE CAN RE-ESTABLISH OURSELVES A S A POWER. RANDY SHANNON IS NO-NONSENSE, AND THIS PROGRAM HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN ABOUT DOMINANCE AND SWAGGER….WHICH IS NOW,CLEARLY GONE. THERE ARE SOME GREAT QB’S IN THE ACC, BUT TO RANK THEM IN THIS MANNER IS JUST FILLER FOR THE SPORTS SECTION. SADLY I MUST ADMIT, XAVIER LEE WILL EVENTUALLY BE THE STARTER IN TALLAHASSEE, AND HIS STRONG ARM MAY LEAD THEM TO THE TOP THIS YEAR… I SAW HIM IN HIGH SCHOOL THROWING BALLS 79 YARDS FROM HIS KNEES! GO CANES! (HOPEFULLY)

Nix was not allowed to do anything at Tech. Neither was O’Brien before him. Bond will not be allowed to do anything, either. The problem at Tech is Chan Gailey. The problem will not be solved until Chan is fired…hopefully, today!

How can you say that Chan Gailey is the worst coach ever? GT has had winning seasons every year under him. It’s an engineering school. They’re lucky they’ve been drawing the talent that they have in the last few years, a lot of which he has had a hand in recruiting. Stop being unreasonable and expecting 11-1 seasons and just enjoy the fact that we pull some pretty spectacular upsets. Oh, so we can’t beat the bonehead Doggies. At least we don’t hear about who’s on the roster from the police blotter.

On yesterdays list Chris Nickson from Vandy was the final honerable mention. He’d be 2nd or 3rd on this list. Matt Ryan is a good college QB but when no one in the conference can top the 3000 yard mark, there aren’t a lot of top flight QBs….Skinner didn’t even top the 2000 yard mark in 14 games!!! I will say there are some nice RBs in the conference though

m I agree, get a life. Nix was allowed under Gailey to do the play calling. I really loved that shot him motioning Reggie to spike the ball on 3rd down, so he could throw it out-of-bounds on forth against you know who.
Miami, you have the worst OC in the history of college football (as “m” the moron would say).
Kyle Wright will be worse this year than the previous two.

Do you blind Chan-lovers not see the trend? It doesn’t matter if Suggs or Ball is the QB. It doesn’t matter who is the Offensive Coordinator. As long as Chan has our offense shut down, nothing will change. Chan promised when he came here that he had learned his lesson in Dallas, and would not interfere with the offense. He lied…and all Tech fans are paying the price. I repeat…Chan Gailey is the worst coach in the history of college football. He has underachieved every year he has been here. He should never have been hired. He should be fired…TODAY!

**OK GUYS.. I NEED EVERYONE TO LISTEN UP BECAUSE I AM FRIENDS WITH SEVERAL SENIOR PLAYERS & HAVE TALKED TO MANY OPF THEM ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT IS BEING SAID! FIRST OFF, FROM WHAT THEY TELL ME, PATRICK NIX WAS AN OFFENSIVE GENIUS, BUT HIS PLAY CALLING WAS LIMITED BY GAILEY & GAILEY CALLED A LOT OF PLAYS OFTEN!!!!!
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE 3-1 REVERSAL TO CALVIN JOHNSON IN THE ACC CHAMIONSHIP FOR A LOSS OF NINE…. WEL, GAILEY CALLED THAT PLAY FROM WHAT THE PLAYERS TOLD ME!
AND EVEN THOUGH I DISLIKE REGGIE, FROM WHAT A LOT OF PLAYERS HAVE TOLD ME, THEY SAY HE WAS EXTREMELY GOOD IN PRACTICE, ITS JUST HE USE TO FOLD IN THE GAMES. WHICH IS WHY BENNET NEVER STARTED.
I KNOW WE WILL ONLY LOSE 1 GAME THIS YEAR IF GAILEY DOESNT INTERFERE WITH BONDS PLAY CALLING AND OFFENSIVE SCHEMES!!!!!!!**

People are always upset that Gaily plays too conservative, they don’t seem to remember that Gaily took a lot of crap his first season for being to gutsy with his play calling cough FSU game cough
This list looks kinda shabby, if we are basing this on potential, which i assume we are after seeing the SEC’s list, with Stafford and Tebow at 3 and 4, then a lot of the hype should be around around Taylor Bennett. He threw for more yards in last years bowl game than any other Tech QB since 2001. He also should do well this season with a strong OLine, and the best RB in the ACC (IMO) in Tashard Choice.
I like Ryan and Skinner, and agree with them being high on this list, but Wright and Weatherford don’t really impress me. It will also be interesting to see how things unfold at Clemson this season

Gailey learned his lesson and we’ll be better this year. And to the moron who mentioned OBrien??? What has he done since departing Tech?????
Gailey has added stability and progression to this team. PERIOD. Gailey works well with a true passing QB and since Ball and Suggs are now gone, Bennett is his firt true passer. Suggs just sucked and made very bad decisions. Ball wasn’t a passer….
See the trend? But seriously, things are better than they were will Bill Lewis and even O’Leary (w/out the Fridge).

Our QB play has been pathetic since Gailey arrived. Name me one coach in the history of the world that would have played Reggie Ball for four years?? If Chan would leave the offense alone, like he leaves the defense alone, O’Brien, or Nix, or now Bond, would do fine. But as long as you see Chan on the sideline with a headset on, Tech’s offense will remain pitiful. Another question, name me another coach in the history of the world that would have COMPLETELY WASTED Calvin Johnson?? Chan Gailey should NEVER have been hired and should be fired IMMEDIATELY!!

GTBen — Gailey did not call plays his first season. Bill O’Brien was still on The Flats. O’Brien learned under the Fridge and took over at GT under O’Leary. O’Brien stayed when Gailey come in and they butted heads because of Gailey’s conservative mentality. O’Brien left, Gailey took over, then eventually let Nix run things. Some day Gailey might actually realize he needs to stay out of the O, just like he does with Tenuta’s D. Eventually, Gailey will step down, and I bet Tenuta takes over….

I must preface this with my bias: I have no use for the NFL and its “I have a one TD lead in the second quarter so I’ve got the game won” mentality. Chan, an otherwise good coach, suffers from this. This does not mean that he should be fired. He’s gotten GT to the point that nobody would be surprised if the Jackets won the ACC title. That IS progress. Bennett will be fine if Choice and the OL stay healthy.
