Who has toughest ACC schedule?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Last week, we got a pretty passionate response when we listed the five toughest schedules in the SEC. Let’s see if the emotions run as high about the five toughest schedules in the ACC …
1. FLORIDA STATE
Home ACC: N.C. State, Miami, Duke, Maryland
Road ACC: Clemson, Wake Forest, Boston College, Virginia Tech
Non-conference: UAB, at Colorado, Alabama (Jacksonville), at Florida
Comment: Any schedule that includes road trips to Clemson, Virginia Tech, Colorado, and Florida, plus a neutral-site game with Alabama, has to be No. 1.
2. MIAMI
Home ACC: Duke, Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Virginia
Road ACC: North Carolina, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Boston College
Non-conference: Marshall, at Oklahoma, Florida International, Texas A&M
Comment: Non-conference games against Oklahoma and Texas A&M plus road trips to Florida State and Virginia Tech put the Hurricanes at No. 2.
3. BOSTON COLLEGE
Home ACC: Wake Forest, N.C. State, Florida State, Miami
Road ACC: Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Clemson
Non-conference: Army, UMass, Bowling Green, at Notre Dame
Comment: Eight bowl teams and five tough road games, including one at Notre Dame. Eagles also get the three toughest teams in the Coastal Division: Virginia Tech, Miami, and Georgia Tech.
4. GEORGIA TECH
Home ACC: Boston College, Clemson, Virginia Tech, North Carolina
Road ACC: Virginia, Maryland, Miami, Duke
Non-conference: at Notre Dame, Samford, Army, Georgia
Comment: Jackets play non-conference games with Notre Dame and Georgia plus games with BC, Clemson, and Maryland from the Atlantic Division.
5. VIRGINIA TECH
Home ACC: North Carolina, Boston College, Florida State, Miami
Road ACC: Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia
Non-conference: East Carolina, at LSU, Ohio U., William & Mary
Comment: Trip to LSU plus road games at Clemson and Georgia Tech earn the Hokies a spot in the top five.

Last season was an off-year for the top ACC teams, but a good showing this year in the non-conference should move the ACC back with the top conferences: SEC,Pac-10,and Big 10.

Each year Georgia is able to sign in excess of 2p recruits. Some do not make it to school. However with the alleged sucess it gets on national signing day, it should never loose a game. It should always be a top five school at the end of the year.
Good luck to them all year long. Just remember you folks aint as great as you think.
The Old Ball Coach is going to catch up. Tennessee and Florida may loose to you every now and then, Alabama and Auburn in the other division, Just sit down and think you get you SEC record on the back of the lower tier teams and your out of conference schedule other than in November needs help.
When was the last team Georgia scheduled a yera in and year out top 25 tesm in September?

Alleged success? You mean like beating your joke of a football team 6 years in a row? Is the kind of alleged success you speak of?
Georgia Tech fans would kill their mother for the kind of success Georgia has had. Lets put it this way:
Georgia’s worst season under Mark Richt=Top 25 finish.
Tech’s best season under Chan Gailey=No Top 25 finish.
Speaking of recruiting lab geek. Wouldn’t you say Georgia Tech has done a little better in recruiting than say, Wake Forest? Gosh, you’d think with all that better recruiting you’d at least be able to beat them.

I am always amazed at how much time Ga. fans spend posting on Tech blogs. They seem to have an infatuation with Tech football. Ga. is like the Atlanta Braves in that they are usually good, just never good enough. Ga., the ultimate goal is to win it all (for small Bulldog minds that means Nat. Championships and we are talking football in this blog)…not be infatuated with Tech. I would rather lose to Ga. 6 years in a row and win the ultimate goal every now and then than like Ga….never be good enough. As I type this blog I now understand your Bulldog mind (thats a scary thought)and infatuation with Tech. As I said, when you are never good enough to win it all you have to find small victories in something.

Leave the inane blog comments to the dawg fans. Maybe if Tech fans just took the high road and didn’t stoop to the base level of obvious digs at UGA we could actually have decent football discussions on these blogs.
The ACC had a down year last year but I think they should do better this year. As Tony stated, FSU’s schedule is tough. If FSU can survive it they’ll be back in the top 5 and the ACC will be considered one of the top conferences.

Hey YO, are you a moron? I guess so. “Small victories in something?” Yea, I hate having my team go to the SEC Championship 3 times in 5 years and win it twice. When was the last time Tech did anything? I mean you lost to WAKE FOREST for the ACC Crap title. Unreal. You know damn well if Tech had a 6 game winning streak against UGA you would not stop talking about it. F-Off and Go Dawgs!

Before the most recent recruiting classes, UGA averaged the 7th best recruiting classes over the previous 5 years while GT averaged 47th. And you dogs are bragging about winning by three or four points recently? Sheesh, plus you lost to Vandy at home. You have a situation comparable to Florida (huge athletic budgets and low academic standards) and you’ve lost 15 of 17. You really don’t have too much to boast about.

Nothing better seeing that home of the bees filled with 60% red that day. Just patethic.

Which is more wrong (IF any):
(a) Bush for committing to a pointless war and also commuting Libby’s sentence.
(b) Chris Benoit, Bonds, McGwire, Giambi, etc. for shooting steriods.
(c) Daniel Peek’s friends for not coming forward.
(d) Larry Coker for not suspending the Hurricane players involved in the fracas with FIU last year.
They’re all pretty bad to me but if I had to choose I would say (a)followed by (c), (d), and (b). Why? Bush is jacking up our vacation plans. Not that America has ever had the best perception but he’s really digging the hole deeper. Next, whoever was with DP that night prior to him getting in the car (his drinking/snorting buddies) should have come forward but then again, their lives will go on (go to college, get drunk, continue the cycle, etc). Now, the Hurricanes did as (dang near) any other program in their situation would. No one was for them except for the people that were with them all along so I guess they figured who really cares? (Bush is in the same situation right now as you can clearly see…he doesn’t care of anyone else’s opinions). Finally, baseball endorsed steroid use for a while so I guess it can’t be that bad…well, that is until it’s most hallowed record was about to be broken. Now steroids are a problem. Benoit is another case…’roid rage doesn’t consist of tying someone up one day and putting a choke-hold on your son the next. That’s premeditated. He’s no better than Scott Peterson or Bobby Cutts in my eye but I guess he was since he got a tribute and they’re not only going after his doctor but also his doctor’s father!! Uh, did somebody go after the people that supplied DP’s alcohol and coke or even the person responsible for supplying Gernarlow Wilson’s alcohol???? Oh, well.
Oh yeah, based off of Barnhardt’s previous articles, I think he’d turn a blind eye to all of the above and say (d) was the most heinous thing that could ever happen…

Hey lab geek, why don’t you crunch the numbers on Wake Forest’s recruiting classes in relation to Tech’s and see what you come up with. 9-6. Sheesh, what a barnburner. If I didn’t have to wash my hair that day I might have watched that titanic clash of football greats!!!
Recruiting=part of the game lab geek. What do you want me to do man? Apologize because our coach is better than yours and gets better players? Sorry, not going to happen. I have nothing to apologize for. So I guess that leaves you with the academics excuse. But before you do remember this, Southern Cal, Michigan, Notre Dame, Texas, etc. all have very challenging academics as well. I don’t hear them crying like babies about how it makes them mediocre in football, do you?
This is pointless. When you’re dealing with a fan base with its head this far up its keaster you’re talking to a brick wall.
Keep crying about recruiting and we’ll keep beating you like a drum. Works for me.

I’ve been a Tech fan all my life and will be one for the rest of my life. However there are currently two things I hold as fact until something changes. 1) Georgia tech cannot beat georgia in football on a regular basis (i.e. 50% of the time) and never will be at that level again. And 2) there truly is no reason to continue this rivalry as far as I can tell…at least not at the end of the year. Play georgia in then opener….if Tech HAS to pay them at all and go through this same crap year after year. Why? We’re not in the same conference anymore and are not playing for anything.

UGA is a good football school because if you are a 4 star athlete, it doesn;t matter how stupid you are in the classroom. There is a program for you in Athens because you can’t pass calculus at Georgia Tech. However, you could make an A+ at the school of food science by cooking up a pan of hamburger helper. The 52 bars in Athens is also a big draw; for thug athletes too stupid to get a real education.

I must say that I’m very impressed with the Georgia Fan’s ability to mention their “success” in recent years. As a Gator fan, I know what its like to taste success. Dog fans do most of their talking before the season starts and with good reason. They come in with these top ten recruiting classes every year and yet they can’t translate that to the field. Something the overrated Richt has overlooked in recruiting is that character plays a big role in success on the field. If UGA doesn’t watch out they’re going to turn in to the Miami of the SEC. Physical Skill isn’t everything, especially when you’re spending time on the bench due to academic and conduct suspensions. Recruit men who are football players, not boys who are good athletes and you will win. Remember, it requires 11 men getting along at once and meshing as a team to win.

LOL@Charles. Chan recruits the same players at Coach Richt does. He offers the same players Richt does. What kind of statement was that? They choose UGA over Tech, so what. Who can blame them? Let’s see….who would want to go to a school in the middle of the hood, half of the students barely speak English, right in the middle of Atlanta traffic, etc. Chan goes after the same athletes Mark does… so look in the mirror.

Look in the mirror-
Charles said he was a gator fan, so why don’t you read his post before replying to him. And if you think Georgia Tech is in the hood you must not have been down that way in at least 5 years. Midtown Atlanta isn’t exactly “the hood” anymore. Only a country bumpkin retard would want to go to college in Athens. Atlanta has the same thing Athens offers now plus a lot more. I find it funny when friends of mine graduate from Georgia and they all move to Buckhead or Midtown and think its the greatest place in the world when I’ve been down here doing the same thing they are doing now since high school.

I came on this blog to read what people thought of Mr. Barnhart’s rating of the five toughest schedules in the ACC not this dribble that is being posted. All of the Dawg, Tech and other teams fans posting need to discuss the topic at hand and stop the name calling as that says more about your own ignorance, rather than the person or school you are trying to insult. Both Georgia and GT have a fine tradition of excellence in academics, in football and other sports as well. College is what the individual student makes of it.
Now as to the 5 toughest schedules in the ACC, I agree with Barnhart on 4 of the 5, but he has Miami as # 2-
Home ACC: Duke, Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Virginia
Road ACC: North Carolina, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Boston College
Non-conference: Marshall, at Oklahoma, Florida International, Texas A&M
In my opinion Miami’s schedule should not be in the 5 toughest schedules. Of their in Conference home games GT presents the biggest problem as they should easily beat Duke, NC St and Virginia. Of their In Conference road games 3 of the 4 will be difficult as the only for sure win is North Carolina. Of their out of Conference games Oklahoma and Texas A&M look to be difficult with FIU and Marshal being pushovers. By my count 6 of Miami’s 12 games are gimme’s and that shouldn’t qualify your schedule as tough. Of course this is just my opinion and I could be wrong.

Big Dawg-
I couldn’t agree more, these blogs are almost getting unreadable from all of the ignorant people posting on here-from both schools.
Anyways, I agree with Tony’s rankings. But already looking ahead to 2008, Tech better do something with this years schedule because next year they are at BC, at Clemson, at Virginia Tech, at UNC, and at Georgia. They drop Notre Dame, but are picking up FSU and Mississippi State. That is a tough schedule.
This year’s schedule is tough, but we get the toughest teams in the conference at home and playing at Miami isn’t as intimidating as it used to be. I think getting Notre Dame early in the year is going to pay off because they are so inexperienced. If only we can get the Charlottesville monkey off of our back then we will be in good shape.

I graduated from Tech in the early 60’s when we were in the SEC and we really did play tough football. Todays Tech teams play like a bunch of sissies in a conference that we looked down on 40 years ago. I am ashamed of what Tech has become on the field and don’t even watch them anymore. The teams that played back then could knock the crap out of the recent teams. Bobby Dodd was a coach, although we should have played that Coach Vaught Mississippi Rebels team when they were good in the 50’s and everyone wanted us to play LSU too but we would not schedule them either. But Bobby Dodd know how to coach and that Chan gailey guy is a disgrace. It hurts to see how awful the football program has become.

ACC had as good if not better results in 2005 and the numbers back it up. 2006 was obviously a down year having loaded the NFL with the most players, the top players, including the #1 pick. So yes, 2006 was a down year. You may laugh but last year it was all parity. UCo SHOULD have beat UGA at home if they would have stepped out of the End Zone instead of punting. Hell, even Tenn only beat Air Force by only ONE pt. Look at Rutgers and people laughed when UNC lost to them early.
Now to 2007, FSU is bringing back most starters, and now has the top offensive staff in the country, to match one of the top defensive staffs. Though 2008 will be the title run. Wake Forest, belive it or not, will be even better this year with one of the top offenses. VaTech returns the top defense and if they had a QB they would have beat UGA handily. This year will be even better and they have sympathy on their side. Miami, new staff and you can’t keep that team down (or out of jail). UNC now has Butch Davis, a proven coach and had a top 20 recruiting class. UNCS now has O’Brian and the talent to match. Boston College is always a top 25 team. GaTech, well, Ball is gone but they play to the opponents level. Clemson; try going and playing at their house. Every year they can be a top 25 team if they learn how to finish the season. (remember that whipping they put on Tenn??) Honestly, every team except Duke can win against any team.

Good riddance, we don’t need you. You are an embarrassment and a disgrace to Tech fans. Ten straight winning seasons, ten straight winning ACC seasons, and ten straight bowl games. Yeah, what a terrible program. Chan Gailey must be a horrible coach, only the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys interviewed him for a job recently, but what do they know anyways. Why don’t you go down to Tech and watch some of the summer workouts and tell them they play like a bunch of sissies.

I’m with you GTgrad. I too remember some of those awesome Tech teams of the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. Yes, Coach Dodd was one of the best ever to coach in college, but his arrogance in not trying harder to schedule Ole Miss and LSU when these schools were also powerhouses in the ‘50’s, and subsequently leaving the SEC has hurt Tech football for a l-o-n-g time. For all those that disagree, take a look at a map of the southeast. ATL sits smack in the middle of the region. With the all the media outlets there are in ATL, and all the various school’s alums, just think how exciting Tech football would be if there were regular home and home games with the likes of Auburn, FLA, LSU, ALA. THEN the GA game WOULD have REAL meaning as it did at one time. Sadly though, returning to the SEC is probably out of the question. If the Jackets could return to the SEC, I guarantee you they would not be playing on Thursday nights before 20,000 fans, half of which probably got free tickets.

GT Grad….you may have looked down on the ACC 40 years ago, but this is 40 years later. Te ACC is eons better than it was 40 years ago. Perhaps the SEC is still better on the whole, but the ACC is not far behind. 2005 was a better year for the ACC than the SEC, but honestly, both had down yeras last year. On paper , this year the SEC is better. Seems you still live in the past a bit when it comes to what conf to support as a Tech fan. Gailey is a nice man, but any comparisons to Dodd are laughable. When Gailey actually wins an ACC title, then he gets respect. But any coach who stuck with Ball for 4 years has some serious questions about his ability. Bennett deserver a chance last year…Ball was one of the all time worst 4 year starting QB’s in CFB history. Check the numbers. BTW..Gailey always pulls off one major upset a year…then blows the season against weaker teams.
