Early SEC East outlook

Every year as my vacation draws to a close, there is always a morning when I can walk outside and just FEEL it.

Another college football season is coming. And for those of us in the South, it can’t get here soon enough.

I know we’re starting to get close when folks come up to me at the grocery store or in church and are rubbing their hands in excitement.

“Man, I can’t wait,” they all say.

We’ve still got 52 days until Mississippi State hosts LSU on Aug. 30 and, as your humble correspondent, it is my job to keep this discussion going until the games mercifully start.

So we will be here every day-weekends too-and will be tossing around the topics that will likely define the 2007 season. Your input is respectfully requested and very much needed to make this blog all that it can be.

If you disagree with an opinion or an assessment, let’s hear it.

If you think there is a glaring omission from a list, let’s talk about it.

If you think your team’s not getting enough love, then state your case.

I’ll try to post in the morning and then come back in the afternoon to respond where it is appropriate.

One favor, please. Argue and disagree as passionately as you want but let’s keep it clean. Somebody’s momma (including mine) might be reading this.

So let’s get started.

With training camp about a month away, here are the five burning questions I have about the SEC East for 2007 (the SEC West will come on Tuesday).

1-Can South Carolina actually WIN the Eastern Division? The Gamecocks will be a trendy pick because 10 starters return on defense and you have to believe that Steve Spurrier will figure some things out on offense. And if QB Blake Mitchell is a little more consistent and the offensive line jells, things could be okay on that side of the ball, despite the loss of WR Sidney Rice. But look at the schedule that has SEC road games at Georgia, LSU, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Ouch.

2-Has Florida lost too many starters to repeat? Here’s a word to the wise. If you’re going to get the Gators, you’d better do it this season because starting in 2008 they are going to be loaded. Actually, Florida is loaded with talent now but so much of it is young. It’s hard to win any kind of championship when you have to replace nine defensive starters. Tim Tebow and the offense are going to have to hold the fort long enough to give the defense a chance to grow up. Will Florida’s D be ready when Tennessee comes to Gainesville on Sept. 15? We’ll find out.

3-What does Tennessee have to do to win its first SEC championship since 1998? Everybody is talking about replacing receivers Robert Meachen, Jayson Swain, and Bret Smith, who combined for 159 catches last season. But Tennessee will always find receivers. The offense, in its second year under David Cutcliffe, will be very good. The improvement has to come on the defensive side of the ball where the Volunteers finished eighth in every defensive category that matters. And here is the stat that should shock you, Volunteer fans. Tennessee’s defense gave up 4.1 yards PER RUSH last season and was still basically two plays away from winning 11 games.

4-Can all six teams in this division go to a bowl? Yes they can and yes they will. All but Vanderbilt went last season and the Commodores return 17 starters and have eight home games. Quick question: Which quarterback led the SEC in passing yards per game last season? That would be Andre Woodson of Kentucky (270.4 ypg). Kentucky won’t win the East, but if the defense (28.4 ppg last season) improves just a little bit, the Wildcats will have an impact on who does.

5-It sounds like every team in the division has issues. So who’s going to Atlanta on Dec. 1? It may be the winner of the Georgia-Tennessee game on Oct. 6. Logically, it’s hard to pick the Dawgs when the offensive line is so young and on defense, two All-World defensive ends and all the linebackers have to be replaced. And then there is the matter of Georgia’s best cover corner (Paul Oliver) flunking out of school. But if DC Willie Martinez can work a little magic on defense and new O-Line coach Stacy Searels can turn that group of young pups (6 freshmen and redshirt freshman in the top 10 players) into a bunch of nasty, snarling hounds, then Georgia could fool us again, just like they did in 2005.

Tenn two plays away from winning 11 games. Jesus. How many plays away from having a dismal season. How many plays away from KY or Vandy winning the last 5 years. Fat Fulmer needs to go.

Again, compare Majors to Fulmer and they are almost identical in win/loss percentage, SEC championships. If not for the 98 Arkanas NC, Fulmer would be history.

Just a general comment…

As always, most folks in the South are looking forward to another year of passionate discussion that only college football can stir up.

Thanks Tony for always being a bedrock of knowledge and consistency over the years. Since all of our teams are undefeated right now, this is one of my favorite times of the year to pontificate and prognosticate the upcoming season.

I am a Dawgs fan for life (although born in GA, I lived in Oregon for seven years and am glad to be back from those pretenders in the PAC-10…especially those weak Oregon Ducks). I think Georgia will either sink or swim- no middle ground. I hope they are awesome, but with so many holes and suspensions, I don’t know if they can do it this year. If you don’t have a defense in this conference, you aren’t going to win. With so many lower teams actually playing well (Kentucky,Vandy, etc) we could be in trouble if we don’t shape up. Hunker down Bulldogs and win… somehow.

UGA will NOT win the SEC east. Not happening. PERIOD. UGA has too many holes to fill, too many questions,a nd too many off field issues. They will finish 3rd. Behind UT and UF. That’s only because Vandy, and Kentucky suck. South Carolina is too inconsistant to even put into the mix. Dogs will go 9-3, but to most of the bulldog-nation it will be a losing season.

I do not think S. Carolina has a shot at all, they have the hardest schedule in the SEC, at Georgia, LSU, Tennesee, and Arkansas. Florida will be the team to beat in the east. People say Tebow can’t pass, but when you run Meyers offense, the longest pass you have to make is 25 yards. The dawgs should be good, the offensive line is new but i would rather have them than the line we had last year. Anyone will be better than Inman and his 2 personal fouls a game. I am really looking forward to our skill players this year. We are loaded. Should be fun.

I’m not convinced that Tebow is ready to be a full time QB. Has he shown anything beside an ability to run up the middle? How long till an SEC lineback blindsides him and welcomes him to the SEC officially?

I am convinced that Stafford is ready. If the Dawgs can play D, watch out!

I was at the Auburn- Georgia game last year. Before the kick off, I figured the game would be over by half time. IT WAS. To my surprise the Dawgs put a game together, and as a real fan, I will Tell you we caught Auburn right. They did look Bad. We played good, but man, they looked bad. So, that being said, you never know. We could catch the Gators “Right” this year….or the Vols…. Vandy could have their best game of the year against us. You just Never know in the SEC. The dawgs WILL be 9-3 this year at best. Too many Questions..Look out 08 !

For UGA, this won’t be the year. Richt is close, but he hasn’t found the magic yet.

UF is ripe for the picking. They believe they’re invincible, which is usually the right time to get knocked off. They’ll lose one early in the season, but Tebow will find his bearings in time for the Cocktail Party. Still, they are the favorites for a return engagement in Atlanta.

UT looks like they have all of the ingredients, but they seem to have lost the cookbook. I don’t think the Fulmer/Cutcliff partnership is the ticket, but you never know. UT vs UF will probably decide the SEC East.

USC has the cookbook, but their ingredients are questionable. If their players consistently hit their high points from last year, you might see the Ol’ Ball Coach in Atlanta. But I doubt it.

UK and Vandy will do pretty well, especially given their histories, but they won’t be contenders for the title.

Of course, that’s just my opinion…

The east is wide open, anyone who says that UGA has too many holes to fill but likes UF is slow. Gotta figure the cocks will find more ways to lose. They always do. And UT lost some solid players too. Just gotta wait and see. Coaching may win the division this year. GO DAWGS!

By BH

Everyone has been waiting for the season to get started up, but I think there are some teams being passed over. No Dawgs said that Vandy and UK suck. Vandy was one game away from a bowl game and UK blasted Clemson…a team that was supposed to be an ACC Powerhouse (assuming there is such a thing). I will tell you that any team in the SEC East is dangerous. Vandy won’t win the East, but they could upset almost anyone. I wouldn’t count UK out. They were one play away from beating both UT and SC last year and they didn’t lose much in the off season. Their Defense seems to have improved and slowing down Woodson and Compnay will be a tough task for anyone. UGA will be better this year than last. It seems that they didn’t get beat much last year by anyone but themselves. I was at the UK/UGA game. Had they stayed in the I formation, they win that game. Gators are always tough. Don’t ever count Meyer out. Same with Spurrier. I think the most overrated team is UT and they are still good. The days of just worrying about one or two teams is over. I think things are going to get tougher with every passing season now. I can’t wait to see some big SEC style hits. Oh…by the way…Lee G. is absolutely right. The Pac-10 is a league of posers and so is the Big 10!!!

I also think Georgia is a year away from our big year. I think we might surprise some people this year with our young offensive line, and win some games we weren’t expected to, but unfortunately lose some we weren’t expected to also.

2008 is our year. I’ve been hearing that for a while now. It will be exciting and interesting to see if that is true.

Screw a National Playoff, what we really need is a playoff in the SEC East to determine who goes to Atlanta. The East should be crazy this year. I don’t think Vandy and UK can win it all, but each team is capible of knocking off any other team. Hey, fellow dog fans, can we please stop talking about 08 and focus on 07, we are starting to sound like a bunch of stupid C** fans

I think GA,TN, and FL have similiar talent on offence (GA’s young line will need to show up). FL lost too much on defense to be successful and neither GA or TN showed me much last year, especially TN. My opinion is that the SEC East looks weak this year.

Maybe your right Dex about GA, TN, and FL, but the other three are going to be improved so every game will be exiciting.

Will, amen on that focus on 07 first and worry about 08 next year. Got 13 (possibly 14) games to play before kicking off in 08.

I think the big factor this year in the East will be the injuries. Whoever can stay the healthiest wins. Depth helps there and we are pretty stacked with athletes that move around. Of course if it comes to that UF looks good and UT if Ainge doesn’t get hurt again. If Ainge gets hurt UT is done. Doesn’t seem like any team is particularly experienced all the way around, everybody has big gaps to fill on one side of the ball or the other. And as always I love the Dawgs and their chances anytime the step on the field.

I like the Gamecocks to do pretty well. Win the SEC? I don’t know about that yet. I agree their schedule is too tough…but I think they win 9 games and upset at least a couple of those east power teams. As an LSU alum I love our home schedule this year, but the game that gives me the most angst is that South Carolina game. That could be a big upset at home. I think they’ll have what it takes to be in the mix with everyone else in the east…they’ll miss representing the east by one lossed game.

LSUjosh, I like the Tigers. Always have had a mutual respect for your program. Loved the way you guys ripped Miami in the Peach Bowl a couple of years back (and with a backup QB too). That backup QB is starting this year and can play so you guys shouldn’t have too much to worry about this year in the West. Don’t worry SC and at home? SOS have a dirty visor and that just bite a lemon look on his face. If SC is all you guys got to worry about, then good luck in the NC game (that of course is if you don’t play us in the SECCG by chance).

I do not think UGA has as many holes to fill as people think. The defense will be a lot faster this season than last. and speed kills as we all know. I think the offense will be very hard to stop and I think the line with those huge juco linemen will be not just good but REAL GOOD!!! I the dogs have as good a shot to win the SEC east as anyone.

TonyiscoolerthanMarkBradley, just wait until the tickle pile in the quad breaks ups at 3. Then this thing will be crawling with bugs.

By Tech Fan

July 9, 2007 2:56 PM | Link to this

From my humble perspective, trying to figure out the SEC is just maddening. The teams are too talented.

That being the case, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that South Carolina comes out of nowhere and goes to Atlanta. It may sound crazy, but last season we saw UGA lose to Kentucky and Vandy, Boise State’s run, Rutgers, and Wake Forest, so why not a suprise in the SEC? Stranger things have happened.

But, I dont think an SEC team is going to go to the BCS Championship game. There’s no way Florida, or LSU escapes undefeated, and chances are at least two teams from the USC, Michigan, Texas group is without a loss at the end of the season (which is why there needs to be a playoff).

TonyiscoolerthanMarkBradley, sorry I am not sure myself. All that I can gather from these blogs is that they occur in the quad and are legendary. Maybe godawg can provide a link to some footage.

Rumor has it that when CJ was doing his #1 pick “meet and greet” for the Lions around Michigan that was the number one thing that he said he missed at Tech. That and Reuben Houston’s “Tickle Bags”. I thought that was funny because I have always heard that they were called “Nickel Bags” but whatever, I don’t do dope. Might ask one of the Tech fans that will be chiming in shortly. Although Tech Fan above seems like a decent poster who knows some football so he might not know or participate in those things. Maybe one of them will enlighten us.

Tony, college football can’t get here soon enough! Dawgs can take the East if they can solve the 2 big questions. offensive and d-lines. If they do—look out. With their herd of running backs, Coutu, and Stafford, the best QB in the East, never count them out.

Ball coach has some new plays up his sleeve! Long live ‘Ole Ball Coach!Run up the SCORE Ball Coach!

By Boclive

July 9, 2007 3:32 PM | Link to this

  1. South Carolina has a lot with Spurrier AND a defense; but being competitive is not the same as being dominant. Spurrier has been getting the maximum out of his teams at USC and he’ll probably continue to do so, but he’s still going to lose 3 or 4 SEC games this year: maybe @Georgia, @ LSU, @ Tennessee, @Arkansas, Florida… even a 10-3 USC team has THREE SEC losses.

  2. Florida is the real deal. They are: a. loaded and b. well coached. They are NOT so talented that teams like Tennessee, USC, and Georgia can’t compete with them AND they are young on defense; but the SEC East goes through Gainesville. There is juggernaut potential here.

  3. I have Tennessee at 4th in the SEC East behind Florida, USC, and Georgia. I don’t much like Ainge as an athlete but of all the quarterbacks in the league he is the one that will get back up after a hard hit and try his best to beat you. I don’t think UT will swoon like they did in 2005 but I don’t think they win the SEC East, either. I thought they over-achieved last year at 5-3 in the SEC; but let’s give them the benefit of the doubt: 5-3 in the SEC again in ‘07.

  4. I sure do like Stafford. He is going to be the best Georgia ever had. 4-4 again in the SEC; maybe 9-4 overall again.

  5. All I know about Vandy is at the top of the depth chart they have roughly the same amount of talent as Alabama. I predict 3-5 in the SEC and a .500 season for Vandy - no bowl.

  6. I know Kentucky has some offense, but I don’t know that they have a defense. Their SEC schedule is NOT favorable, and I don’t think they win as many SEC games as last year. Make them 3-5 in the SEC; or worse.

I am glad we are not in the SEC East. Kentucky and Vandy could be pretty good football teams and they are still going to be at the bottom.

FL lost a lot on defense….their secondary is a little young but their guys on the line will hold. Tebow injured his elbow in the spring and thats why he didnt try an passes over 10 yards then. I dont know if he is ready for leading the game for 4 quarters and staying healthy.

UT lost a lot of skill players….Ainge has already had health issues in the spring…so be prepared for his backup to play some.

USC has 2 players on D that could create havoc for anyone…the Brinley brothers. Mitchell under center is just a filler for this year. He would be 2nd string behind any QB in the East.

UK has Woodson…..and he is for real. Their D is on the rise so they can be another upset in the making for someone.

Vandy has one of the best LBs in the Conferance in Goff and their skill players have experience and are capable of upsetting a lot of teams….I like their coach as well.

MY beloved UGA…..the O-line is new but not particularly freshmen, 2 returning seniors and several JUCO transfer and big Sturdivant. Sturdivant played like a JR in the spring and Havercamp played well at RG. The skill players are going to be the biggest key on O because I feel that the line will be okay and suprise some people. The D is solid in the middle with Atkins and friends returning. The ends are the biggest question there….can the JUCO make a difference? The secondary has the speed and ability and the safety position should have that pop that was missing since Blue left with Johnson. The corner spot left by Oliver should be okay but not great with either ReMarcus Brown, T. Flowers, or one of the 18 redshirts from last years class pulling it along.

My most feared games……OSU= the first game….will be a good test with an already good team on the rise.

AU= has never lost to UGA with a returning Senior QB….10-0.

TECH= have played them too close the past few years when we should have blown them out.

UF= even though we hold the series…they cant be denied that the past decade and a half belong to them. We have beat ourselves the past 2 years with them….

D comes out fast and the O line holding up….UGA should be able to hold their own against any of the East and hopefully return to the Dome.

As long as UGA’s QBs are not cuddling and spooning on the sidelines they can have a decent year. I don’t see that happening though. I’m going to say no one is loaded for NC level and it will come down to the running game. With that I will say UT…..Go Big Orange!

If we get a couple of lucky breaks we could very well go all the way…….One thing that I really believe is that people don’t understand the change in CMR and the effect that is having in Athens. It is funny to me that UGA fans accuse other fans like Auburn fans of b*** and whining a lot. There are no fans in the country that complain and b*** and moan than the DAWG nation. Every year they are full of excuses just like last year of why they lost to Vandy, UK,ole p**(in my book) and should have lost to a worthless Colorado team at home. The excuses just never seem to end. This year will certainly be no different. Oh and for those illusional people (about 6 or 7 that I counted) that say 08 will be the year just look at the pups schedule for 08 and they will not have a prayer. But hey according to the dawg nation the pups have been a year away now for almost 30 years now.

The Gators are talented, the Vols are mean, the Gamecocks are tough, the Commodores are seasoned and the Wildcats are explosive. The SEC East is going to be one mother blowout of a dogfight; so why would you bet on anyone in a dogfight but a DAWG!

The ol’ ballcoach will get it done this year. They will dominate on defense, and with Spurrier the offense will score points. Carolina will take Georgia and Arkansas on the road and will split between LSU and Tenn. They will humble Tammy Bowden and the kittens from CU. Then they will have a rematch with LSU. Watch out SEC, this will be the year of the GAMECOCK!!!

Georgia made tremendous progress at the end of last year- our QB grew up, our receivers finally started catching the football, we stopped committing all those turnovers, stupid penalties and cut down on those missed assignments etc.

You say we have some holes to fill, well that is true every year for every team. With this said I like our chances to not only win the SEC East, but to win the SEC period. 1. We have an improved OL as we have 2 to 3 very talented OL at every position which means we have depth which we haven’t had in several years. 2. As previously mentioned our QB grew up last year. 3. Our receivers started catching the football. 4. We have several guys who can take it the distance anytime they touch the football. 5. Our defense is going to be even stronger than it was last year. Coach Martinez had them in soft zones too much which cost us in all of our 4 losses last year. 6. We will find out in the very first game how good or bad this team is as we play a very good offensive team in Oklahoma State. They like us have more questions on Defense than Offense. So if our D shows up and plays the way they are capable it will bode well for us. Go Dawgs

UGA have holes on the offensive line? what is new..we always have them and we always prevail. Stafford has a gun and a butt load of talent. The receivers are going to be awesome. Sean bailey is back and Massaquoi is moved to the slot receiver. Mikey henderson is an elite special teams player as well as WR. The running backs are going to be better than anyone can imagine. Now for the defensive..yeah, we have a few returning starters but all of the new kids played most of the games anyways. Time was split pretty even between the old dawgs and new ones. No worries there for me. D-line and Linebackers now…as I recall the start of 01’ season no none had heard of a guy named pollack, thurman, bailey, clemons, thomas davis, etc… Trust me these guys are going to be the “real deal”. I think this is the better year to win the SEC, not next year. Have you seen the schedule for next year? Away games at Arizona St, LSU, Auburn, S.C. People will be surprised of how well we actually do this year. Oklahoma st. 54 more days. Go Dawgs!!

I’m a Gator fan so my prediction is probably biased, but i don’t care. Florida will win the SEC again and this is why. When Tebow came into the game last year everybody knew he was running the ball, and they still couldn’t stop him. How are they going to defend him now that he’s going to be slinging the ball all around the field? (remember his passing ability was what got him recognition in high school.)

By DawgBone

July 9, 2007 8:53 PM | Link to this

Here’s why Florida will not win this year in Jax - Tebow will hold the reins at QB without Leak to bail him out. Just like Stafford had some tough games last year as a starter Tebow will see what it’s like to start and finish a game.

Oh, by the way you beat us by 7 last year. Stafford will light up the Gators this year and Moreno will bring back the alligator arms. We’ll bring the hobnail boot to UT and give Steve some Shout to get those visor stains out.

See you in Atlanta Tigers…not you Aubie ;-o)

UGA has more holes than 75 percent of the teams in the SEC. You and the rest of the DAWG nation will realize this when the puppies have two losses by Sep 8. Then just as Greg said the excuses will start flying from the Dawg nation once again like they do every year. GO TO HELL DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have never heard a future season hyped so much as this one… and I’m not talking about ‘07 - I’m speaking of ‘08. For the past two years everyone has said, “Wait til 2008 - it is a national championship year.”

I, more than anyone, would love that to be true. But let’s not forget this year. The Dawgs have a very good team and you never know who can catch some breaks. (Rutgers, anyone?) Teams can also catch fire with younger players (like West Virginia). I am not overlooking this year or holding my breath for 2008. I say take one season at a time! Go Dawgs!!!

Big Dawg was right on. Yes we’re young but do we have talent. I’ve mentioned the changes in CMR and one of them was to bring in some of the top JUCO players in the country. You say, well he had to, I agree but this is just another way that CMR has changed. ONE THING FOR SURE. NOT A SINGLE TEAM IN THE SEC HAS PLAYED AGAINST A DAWGS TEAMS THAT HAD A TRUE H. C. THIS IS GOING TO BE A REALLY ROUGH AND TUNBLE SEC YEAR BUT COUNT OUT THE DAWGS AT YOUR OWN RISK. THEY’LL BE THERE FROM THE START.

This will continue to be a heated debate until helmets start knocking. The East is going to be tough for anyone to run, chances are someone will get knocked off every weekend because all the teams are going to be very talented. As for the Dawgs, I’m most excited about Bobo taking over the play calling. I believe you will finally see the strong running game that everyone has been begging for the last few years. Lumpkin-Moreno combo is going to be fun to watch, O-line is young but Staff is going to be more consistent this year in the short passing game to keep defenses off balance. If our own defense can get a few stops, Dawgs are going to put up a lot of points. I hate to use a cliche, but get off the tracks, the Dawg train is coming through. Should be an exciting year, no matter who wins the east. Sad to say though, LSU is probably going to handle whoever wins the east in the championship game. Good start Tony, keep it going man, can’t wait til kickoff.

Buck in NW I agree with you on many levels especially about CMR. The change(s) that this man has made are being felt all around the dawg nation. The team seems to be gelling better already. Being so young they need to count on each other more than ever. And the time that he will get to spend with the players individually will make a big difference. And anyone who questions Martinez this year needs to remember that CMR will be up his rear during the game if things start to slip up. There is no more time of soft defense for half or the whole game. CMR with the time he will have will fix that by the next time they hit the field. Like Buck said “NO ONE HAS PLAYED UGA WITH A TRUE HEAD COACH!”

Also to play the “special season” card but you have to take it in that two other things are going to play into this year for the dawgs. Larry Munson retiring and the end of the year and also UGA VI retiring at the end of the year. The team and staff believe so much about tradition that they will do everything they can to send these two off with a season to remember especially Larry! This will hit the hearts of the whole dawg nation and to a national level.

For anyone who thinks that Kentucky has a chance a beating UGA this year needs to read the last paragraph again and remember that these two along things along with senior night will take place that night in Athens. This will be the official/unofficial departing of Larry and UGA VI. Unofficial because they will more than likely finish out the season away from with us.

OK Guys, here goes my predictions:
UGA 11-1 losing to AU. They have that long-awaited off week before FLA, but may slip up afterwards w/ a home game vs. an overlooked AU. Richt is undefeated in TENN, will handle SC as usual, will get revenge against KEN & VANDY, and whip up on TECH (as usual). ALA will be out-matched on talent (and coaching). Anyone remember the last time Richt met Saban? 45-16 anyone?? FLA will go 9-3 losing to a prime-time (night) game AT LSU, the UGA game & Spurrier will get revenge in Columbia from that missed FG from last year at the Swamp. UK will go 9-3 w/ loses to ARK, FLA & UGA. SC will go 8-4 w/ loses to UGA, LSU, ARK & CLEM. TENN will go 8-4 w/ loses to CAL, FLA, UGA & SC. Fulmer, to so some peoples surprise (but not mine) will stay at TENN. VANDY will go 6-6 w/ loses to AU, UGA, SC, FLA, TENN & WF. LSU will go 11-1 w/ losing to KEN @ KEN in an upset special. AU will go 10-2 w/ loses to FLA & LSU. ARK will go 7-5 w/ loses to ALA, AU, TENN, LSU & MISS. That MISS game could be the nail-in-the-coffin for an un-appreciated Nutt. ALA will go 6-6 w/ losses to VANDY, UGA, FlaSt, TENN, LSU & AU. People in ‘BAMA town will be ‘whisper quiet’ during the next off-season. MISS will go 6-6 w/ losses to VANDY, FLA, UGA, ALA, AU & LSU. Ole Miss alum will still be shaking there head as to why they fired Cutcliff. MissSt will go 3-9 w/ loses to LSU, AU, SC, TENN, W.Vir, UK, ALA, ARK, & Ole Miss. This will be Crooms last year. A great man, but not a great coach. Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m going to by the winning lottery ticket.

Tony Blowhart, sir :

You are an ACC Fan from North Carolina, where your head on your butt and know NOTHING except ACC basketball - and, are limited in your knowledge of that topic. Sir.

9:33 p.m. last night we get these responses by Tech fans :

“Hasn’t named Our Terry Graduate School of Business for a bankrupt former student who has failed on his obligations to Tech like Tech has” - True, AppleSouth filed for bankruptcy. But you have to admit, Terry is a great name for a school with a redneck reputation. Why not Billy Bob School of Business ?

Did I miss something, or are you agreeing that your business school is named for a guy who is bankrupt : AppleSouth. And, all you can say is that Terry School of Business at UGA is a worse name in your opinion based on that ?

“Has your football players with a worse Academic Progress Rate than UGA’s” - By that standard, Tech’s student APR would be lower too. It’s a harder school, so it’s harder to graduate. We can’t hide our athletes as parks and rec majors.

No, they are all management majors - even single Tech athlete in every single Tech sport.

How much harder a school is Georgia Tech ON PROBATION for academic cheating in four (4) sports again this year where Tech allowed students at Tech to take Rocks for Jocks and Slide-Rule use 5 times each - none of which would have been eligible students therefore at ANY SCHOOL in America** ?

UGA was 1-4 vs. the SEC East for the season just ended.

For all who forever doubts the Dawgs D, don’t. UGA’s defense was as good or better than those ranked much higher in 2006. Virginia Tech had the #1 D going in to the CFA bowl, but the Dawgs D set the tone for that game, (after VT’s little trick plays were used up), and as bad as I hate to say it Georgia Tech’s D was really harder to adjust to and score on than VT’s D. WM’s D has been improving, and with the talent level UGA has, it would not surprise me if they are back to 2002 standards. Ching’s article in the Columbus Ledger Enquirer has Miller putting this D as the he has been a part of at UGA. And for all of you drooling over UF, the Gators were not really any better than at least 3 teams in the SEC last year, including UGA, they just had those “breaks” that some of you were talking about. I’m not ready to say that UGA is second fiddle to anyone anymore including the mighty Gators. Sure we have had our problems with them, but the tables are about to turn in that respect. I know Tony says UF will be loaded after this year but to him I say UGA is loaded now, and this ain’t going away any time soon. The UGA-UF game I saw in 2006 featured the only defense I saw all year to stop Tebow, and if Meyer plans to leave him naked on the corners in that little offense he loves so much (see old Utah footage), then the Dawgs D will be licking their chops. All of these people who don’t really know UGA football, and the heart instilled in our players are only going on last year’s problems. This will be a different team of Dawgs. For any of you who may wager on games this fall, if you bet against UGA on a regular basis then you had better make sure you are given a heap of points.

Which team will have the best play on the line? That and whichever team has the best overall defense will win the SEC east. Therefore, which team has the best D? UGA has some pretty good guys on the OL, but it takes time for an OL to gel. Has CMR settled on who’ll start on the OL? That has to be settled right after spring training. Going into the fall not having decided who the starters are spells trouble, eg 9-3. And, Tony, “…two all-world defensive ends..”?! Hmm, I don’t think Q-mo was anywhere near “all-world”.

SOS is building a football team. That’s one reason why we must jump them again to make it 3 in a row. NOBODY has heard me put SOS down because he’s to good and remember this. We won the SEC title even though we lost to the Reptiles so SC could loose to the Dawgs and still win the Title. With 10 returning starters on “D”, Stafford will be tested by one of the best and I believe he’ll do “just fine, thank you”.

Okay Gamecocks….lets think about this. Yes, you have SOS…possibly one of the greatest college coaches to grace the gridiron. But lets also remember your schedule; it does not play into your favor this year. Also remember your QB….Mitchell is not Tanneyhill. I dont think Spurrier is able to fully unleash his C**-and-Fire like he wants to with him under center. I also dont see a real breakout type of reciever to take Rice’s place. Your D should be moderately okay with the Brinkleys coming back. But, all do respect, you do have Spurrier, and as much as I hate him for what he has done to UGA in his FL years, I have too respect his coaching and I think that he is also a good man…..unlike the Pumkin in TN, or the shoe-man in Bama(you know, flip-flops)

I love Georgia fans. The Pups lose to UK and Vandy and yet this clown feels that they are right on par the the National Champion Florida Gators.

How can you lose to UK and Vandy and think you are even in consideration for Second Fiddle? These days you are more like 5th Fiddle in the SEC East (Behind The National Champions, UT, and now UK and Vandy).

Georgia is a little better now than you were in the Goff era, but you are not an elite team.

UGA could be the team to beat in the east. The young pups are actually more athletic and talented than some of the departures. And they WILL be well coached. I had the opportunity to watch several off season workouts at UGA as well as UT, USC, and UF. I have never ever seen a hungrier group of young players than the pups that I saw during those workouts at UGA. The chemistry is there, the desire is there, and folks that will equate to alot of wins for this UGA squad.

Here is what I want to see first… (1) Stafford.. what has he done?? 1/2 of the experts think he is freaking Payton Manning all of a sudden.. Lets not make this guy a superstar because he had 1 good game (Against Auburn) (2) Teebow.. He looked like a white Corey Jenkins when he was at QB last year.. until I see him throw a pass of more than 3 yards.. Im not sold on him either.. (3) Mitchell.. I thought he had turned the corner after coming off of the bench last year.. then this years spring game.. he looked lost.. (4) Woodson.. Yeah, he has great numbers.. and UK will score alot of points.. but until Kentucky starts playing SOME defense.. hard to pick them to win more than 6-7 games.. (5) Ainge.. Might be the 2nd best QB in the East(Behind Woodson).. if the WRs can step up(similar situation in Columbia)… Tennessee can win the east (6) Vandy.. Bobby Johnson has done a great job.. but he still only gets to use a Knife in a Gun Fight..

Here are my predictions: (1) Tennessee 10-2 (6-2) (2) South Carolina 9-3 (5-3) (3) Georgia 9-3 (5-3) (4) Florida 8-4 (5-3) (5) Kentucky 6-6 (3-5) (6) Vandy 5-7 (2-6)

The past two years UGA lost the UF by less than 7 points. All the scores by UF were on the openning drives or each half. UF almost lost to USC; except for a field goal would have.

By the way….nice move by suspending Brandon James for that really hard opener with Western KY. Buying marijuana only gets a UF player a one game suspention and charges reduced to a misdemeaner…..UF has a really good chance to win the Fulmer Cup….they already have 17 points!!!!

Caleb wrote “Tebow came into the game last year everybody knew he was running the ball, and they still couldn’t stop him.”

Hate to agree with a gator, but that’s what I’m wondering too. On third and short he was always good for 5. I’m hoping it was because he was the freshest guy on the field, running only 5 or 10 plays a game. If he’s FU’s one and only QB, I don’t think they’re going to send him running into the linebackers on a regular basis, but still, the threat is there. I hope someone can explain why I’m wrong.

Respect for UGA?? WHY?? You went 1-4 against the SEC East last year.. And if you would have played USC later in the year.. you probably would have went 0-5 against the East.. This is the team that needed a miracle to beat COLORADO at home.. AND LOST TO VANDY AT HOME..

This same team lost 8 starters on defense.. the same defense that won you most of your games.. If UGA wins the East this year.. Richt should be the NCAA coach of the year.. You will be improved.. but lets be realistic..

austindog, I fear it for both Tebow and Stafford. Sure they are capable of running the ball and running it well. However, I fear they will get their blocks knocked off if they aren’t careful. I think we will see less running by both next year.

All UF will need to do next year is plant a nickel bag on Brandon James and tell him the cops are chasing him. See him run.

Tebow was used last year as pretty much a glorified FB. He is not fully game tested. In the spring he was injuried and they held him back on his throwing to only 10 yd passes but he did okay with those…..but I dont think any spring game has the intensity and speed of a full blown game.

The Meyers spread offense has not been shown to the SEC…Leak could not run it because he is not mobile enough. They tried it the first year UM was in UF and Bama killed them….speed on the ends and a solid middle. Thats were I think they may have trouble…at Bowling Green and Utah, the defenses they played were not even close to the SEC’s. The question is, can Tebow handle the game at full speed and know when to take a loss of yards over trying to run for 5 and getting plowed by a LB at full speed? If he doesnt learn that quick….who is UF’s backup QB?

To assist in disspelling the notion that atop Rocky, Fulmer alone did in Majors, it ain’t that easy. Majors did in Majors to a large degree. I recall a game back in the 90’s where some Tennessee fan (?) held up a sign reading, ‘BLOCK THAT ARTERY’. This in reference to Majors clogged up cardiovascular system. Midseason upset losses to Vandy and KY were no fun, but I can think of a worse scenario. Being 9-2 with 3 games left in the season and preparing to play a hated rival who had already lost to Vandy and KY. Then off to the ACC title game against a very beatable Wake team for a BCS birth and a big time bowl game. Ten wins all but guaranteed. The result? Three straight losses after having the lead in each game, no title, no 10 wins, and a lower winning percentage than the Bulldogs.

If all Tebow has to do is dump the ball off to Harvin 10 yrds down field, that might be all they need. That dude is elusive. But again one good hit might stop that. The thing is getting that one good hit on Harvin. Houdini that guy is.

I agree with Barnhart. This is the year to beat Florida. I think Tebow will struggle with carrying this offense on his shoulders. I’ve said it since last November - UGA beats UF this year.

As for UGA… tons of questions. Offensively we could be absolutely explosive (i.e., averaging 35+ pts./game), with a combination of a solid running game and deep threats in the passing game. The big ?, is whether the WR’s can catch the ball this year! Defensively, the front 7 are a concern for me - especially at DE! Our interior DL have got to significantly improve over last year, or teams will be able to run on us. LB’s could be a concern, particularly in the middle. We need stability and fundamentals at of those guys.

The SEC East is wide open IMO. UGA/UF/UT all have a shot at the East. Much will depend on how the balls break for those teams. Last year UF got lucky (see SC, Ark. games as examples)… I don’t see their luck holding up this year. Barnhart is correct, the game to decide the East will come on Oct. 6 - UGA vs UT.

Unfortunately, I don’t know if this will be the year of the Dawg. I believe our defense is very talented, but young and inexperienced. The youth and inexperience will unfortunately result in some costly mistakes in the first half of the season that will hurt us. However, if these boys can hunker down and make it through the first 4 games unbeaten, we might have a darn good shot at the SEC. Our defense should start getting more consistent and better each game, but they will need a couple of games to gel.

I think we’ll be just fine with the O-line. I don’t see how the O-line can be as bad as they were in 2003. Remember that year? Good grief, Greene got sacked over 40 times that year, if I remember correctly. We still had a pretty darn good offense and went to the SECCG. Richt and Bobo will have the offense doing just fine this year. The running game will be awesome and the passing game will be much better.

It’s all on the Defense if you ask me. The consistency of the defense determines our season.

Just my 2 cents. Go dawgs!

P.S. FWIW, we do beat the Gators this year.

I can’t understand how you could see UGA’s games last year vs Vandy and Ky as anything but an anomoly. It happened, but it will be a VERY rare thing for it to happen again.

I see the East coming out of the obvious 3 schools. UGA/UF/UT. That’s just the way it is, and the way it’s intended to be. South Carolina may pull ONE upset, but that’s about it, and the fans will be VERY happy about that, I might add.

IF UGA finds an OL, watch out. IF Tebow can handle the job by himself, watch out. IF Fulmer finds a running game, watch out. The others are just cannon fodder in the East.

See how it works in other states? Florida authorities decided not to press charges against FLorida Gator running back and punt returner Brandon James with purchasing marijuana, a felony, in connection with his June 11 arrest.

State attorney’s office Spencer Mann said Monday that the eight grams James purchased from a police informant didn’t qualify as a serious enough crime for the state to pursue.

Well at least he didn’t broker a 100 pound pot deal and start the next game like a certain Georgia Toke player we all know.

Thanks, Mr. Barnhart…I too can really feel IT, when there is less than 60 days to go, and the excitement starts to build!

I think most football fans are going to be amazed by Tebow. Alex Smith was amazing at Utah, enough to be a #1 pick in the NFL, but almost no one watched the Utes. Well, think Alex Smith, but a lot harder-hitting.

For the curious, the backups to Tebow are Jarred Fayson and Bryan Waggener, both of whom are bigger than Tebow. Fayson will come in regularly on the short running situations, so Tebow will not be asked to do a lot of the types of plays he did last year. And Fayson can throw, too.

One Dawg wants to keep 9 in the box to stop the Gators. I can only wish. You think anyone in the country can single cover Percy Harvin and Bubba Caldwell all game?

The Gators are young on defense, but we have some of the best coaches in the country on that side of the ball, who between them have like 120 years of coaching experience. They will learn fast. I see the Gators repeating as East champs, with only a loss to LSU and a rematch with the Kitties in The Florida Dome in Atlanta. I really like Stafford, and I really like Spurrier, so I predict a tie for second between the Cocks and Dawgs. Fulmer, and Ainge I don’t like. Put them 4th. Tucky and Vandy bring up the butt-end of the division, again.

TonyiscoolerthanMarkBradley and ‘kalamazoo, my research reveals that “tickle piles” are a sacred tradition carried down through many decades by horn-rimmed glasses wearing, abacus carrying, geeks with pocket protectors that congregate around a vocational school off North Avenue in the city of Atlanta, Georgia.

Because they are fairly secretive there is little footage available. Legend has it that they traditionally happen on the quadrangle outside the residence halls at this vo-tech campus and involve a large number of the aforementioned “geeks” and a lot of planning. However, apparently they can also happen spontaneously as a team of UGA anthropologists studying the phenomena recently found out. They were able to capture this rare footage of a two-geek tickle pile that took place inside a residence hall.

I agree.. for Carolina to be strong on offense.. someone has to step up at the WR position. McKinley will be the top man, but Jared Cook or another WR has to get the job done.. By Jon.. Tennessee may have the same problem, since Meachem is gone.. I know UT has plenty of talent there.. Other than LSU being the top team in the SEC.. there a bunch of teams batting for 2nd in the SEC.. I think other than Vandy, Miss State, Kentucky and Ole Miss.. those other 7 teams are gonna battle it out for 2nd

Wait one moment. Vandy and Kentucky suck? My dear friends saying this, look at history. Vandy upset UGA between the hedges, Kentucky was a couple plays away from beating UT, won the Music City Bowl (over Clemson), beat Georgia, was close to beating Florida. Vandy lost to Arkansas by an extra point snap fumbled by the backup QB, lost to Alabama by 3, lost to Florida by a bad spot call on 4th and inches at Florida’s 4 (They lost by 6). Come on! Where have you been the past 2 years, VU and UK are not bottom feeders anymore. Either one could finish up to 2nd in SEC East!

By jstrom

July 10, 2007 1:37 PM | Link to this

Just my 2 cents worth here. By default, everyone pulls for “their” team and knows that team infinitely better than the teams on the opposite side of the field. Too much credit is often given to a program’s history as opposed to the actual teams playing on the field (Notre Dame?). That said, a lot of people are picking the same teams in the SEC as always. Of course, EVERY team has to be reckoned with every year. People always remind us that Vanderbilt/Kentucky are terrible in the east(want to ask GA how terrible they were last year?). Ole Miss and Miss St. are the usual equivalent in the west. Being an alumnus of Univ. of South Carolina, I am one of the eternal optimists of the Gamecock Nation and thusly keep up with most things Gamecock. With the schedule USC has this year, it’s very hard to say USC will win the SEC Championship, but outside of the LSU and Tenn. games, I can’t see how USC can be considered a serious under-dog for ANY other game on their schedule this year. Florida has a quarterback who they’ve intentionally allowed to only run (does anyone remember that touchdown “pass” he threw last year? You can’t win in the SEC without a quarterback who can pass. Oh…anyone else notice Tebow’s knack for fumbling the ball in a crowd too? As for UGA, I think they’re the biggest “IF” of all the teams in the SEC. Matt Stafford has only proven that he’s a very, very mediocre QB, even when he was surrounded by an enormous amount of talent. He may still be surrounded by a lot of talent, but that remains to be seen. He’ll still be a sub-SEC QB and that will prove itself out in ‘07. Tennessee, on the other hand, does bring back a lot of talent. Why they’re not the number one choice of more football gurus is beyond me. I do believe that no matter who wins, a lot of luck will be involved and the best team doesn’t always win. The SEC East is perhaps the toughest division in any conference in all of football and South Carolina always, always, always plays a major role in who ultimately does win our division. People just don’t want to seem to acknowlege that for some reason. Watch out this year! USC just might have the best team in the east!

jstrom : Ok, here we go. While I like the tone of your post, I’ll try to give you some insight. You’re right about SC playing a major role in the East Champion. Actually, EVERY team in the East plays a ‘Major Role’. That’s because one lost to ANY team in the East could kill one’s hopes. I guess you can look at it as SC has beaten FLA & TENN recently, OR you could look at it as they’ve lost to FLA, TENN & UGA last year. Like it or not, SC hasn’t been a serious contender in the SEC East. They’ve only beaten the BIG THREE Once in the last how many years???
You are right on w/ the Tebow analysis.

I would like for you to answer a couple of questions though: Why is it that most SC fans seem to think SC has a better chance of beating UGA than FLA or TENN? UGA is the only team I believe Spurrier hasn’t beaten while at SC. And if you think Stafford is a ‘Sub Par’ SEC QB, then what is Blake Mitchell??

Florida and Georgia both have way too many holes to fill this year, including 2 unproven quarterbacks. With that said, both schools also have a boatload of fresh talent coming up through the ranks. It will be interesting to see if the new guys can step up. Tennessee looks really good this year, and SC returns the most starters than anyone else in the conference. So I say the winner of the Tenn/SC game wins the east. And watch out for Kentucky to win a couple of upsets this year.

By AtlGator

Buck Cochran, jstrom will be proven wrong. In a big way. Stafford is the real deal. He is without a doubt the most gifted and talented QB in the SEC. Alot depends on the way his supporting cast develops this season, but that is as sure as the sun rises in the east for the 08 season and beyond. Furthermore you’ll be seeing alot of that kid on Sunday in the years to come.

I envy the SC fans. I mean where else can scoring 1 point be considered 100% improvement in a game.

But seriously, SC will continue to be better. I think that’s a good thing. They already give us all we can handle. For some reason we seem to get one of thier better shots (ok not last year, which they could have won with any kind of an offence), so I don’t worry too much about them stepping it up against us, they usually seem to. And I dont see UGA not giving them their full attention now. All we have to do is beat them early and then they are working in our favor the rest of the year. Hopefully the rest of the east will get the SC we usually do. Seems like everyone treats UGA as a rivalry now, so may as well have the rest of them beating each other up too.

Stafford may be young, but I think the game winning TD pass with 1:45 against GT and the 28pt second half comeback against VT’s #1 defense in the country (#1 in total D and passing D) in the bowl game lead me away from the “unproven” tag.

I didn’t jump on the Stafford bandwagon when he hit Athens. I thought wait and see, he was too hyped to be true. Too many INT’s and few TD’s really didn’t look all that impressive if you just look at the stats. The last three games is where he proved that he is the man this year. I think part of that never quit attitude comes from him and he does a great job of being a leader on the field. For those of you calling him unproven for this year are just plain wrong. To say you wouldn’t prefer him being your QB are probably jealous.

As one of those guys who played in the trences I can tell you Georgia’s OL is not a question mark this year and is one of our strengths. In my opinion by the end of the year those of you who have been doubting and talking trash will be eating your words. Only thing is will you be man or woman enough to come on the Georgia blog and eat crow. It is only my opinion and I may be wrong but I don’t think so. Go Dawgs

Stafford unproven? 6-2 as a starter is unproven? 3 wins over top 25 teams is unproven? 300 yards of total offense against a top 5 team on the road is unproven? MVP honors in a bowl game against the #1 defense in the country is unproven? Not bad for a true freshmen 18 year old QB. Boy does the future look bleek for the haters. I feel sorry for you.

UGA’s running game behind that line you just mentioned Big Dawg is only going to make Stafford that much more deadly off of play action this year. Kregg Lumpkin and Knowshon Moreno are going to love some of these new O line guys. Real earth movers. I think the O line is going to average about 315lbs.

TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO THINK FLA and TENN are BETTER than UGA

Are you kidding?

TENN lost ALL of their Wide Recievers, 3 O-Linemen, and 7…7 People on Defense!!!

FLA Lost basically everyone w/a pulse. 9 defensive starters, 6 offensive starters 7 if you don’t count Percy Harvin!!!!

UGA lost 7 defensive starters but they played so many back ups last year they have experience already. They lost 3 O-linemen as well

BUT UGA Has all of its RBs, WRs, and QB back, and Upgraded at Tight End. There is more than enough talent in the Secondary despite the losses and the Line backers have esperience!

The EAST is ripe for the Picking. It could be a 3-WAY Tie at 10-2 and have to go to a tie breaker

BUT I think TENN lost too much and they were not that good last year (yes they beat UGA but finished w/ same record and it was our rebuilding ear) FLA lost too much and TEBOW hasn’t proved himself as anything more than a RB!

UGA 10-2, FLA 9-3, TENN 8-4 or 9-3

Gamechicken fans all sound the same every year. It does not matter the season, they always say “this is the year”. They could have 22 true freshman starters. They still would forecast a NC. In my opinion they now even have SOS drinking the Kool-Aid. Maybe you C** fans need to humble yourselves before anything good comes your way.

ATTENTION ALL SEC TEAMS. DO NOT LET THE DAWGS WIN THOSE 1ST TWO GAMES… question to exNFLplayer or anybody. I’ve caught a little heat for this statement: we have a real advantage that people haven’t noticed and that is our “OC” and our QB are both of the same mindset, that is “when in doubt attack”. It’s my belief that this situation can give any team another slight advantage. As their relationship grows Stafford will know what Bobo wants done with out anything being said and Bobo will know what his QB is thinking and going to do. Do you or anyone else have an opinion?

UK will shock the football world and win the East in 2007. They have the best skill players in the conference (Woodson, Little, Tamme, Burton). We lost 3 Olinemen but have replacements with a lot of game experience.

The defense improved late in 06 - held Vols to 17 points and Clemson to 6 until 2 late TD’s in 4th Qtr when Cats went to the ridiculous prevent defense. We return something like 22 of our top 25 on defense.

All of you Gators/Dawgs/Vols can laugh if you want but the Cats are going to be tough in 07.

Georgia Fans,

Do you realize that in the last 17 season you have beat the University of Florida only 2 times? 2 of 17! That’s embarrassing. To save yourselves all the devastation every year you should just accept the fact that Florida owns you and you don’t deserve to play on their field. That way when you lose, again, it won’t hurt as bad. You can say, “Hey, they do this every year, so it’s no big deal. We just need to get it together for UK and Vandy, our real rivals, and pray to make it into the Citrus Bowl.”

You should say, “Hey, Ron Zook, the worst coach ever, beat us 2 out of 3 times. Now that they have a great coach this is expected.”

You should say, “Our program died with loss of Vince Dooley. Florida lost their legendary coach who owned us, replaced him with a clown who owned us, and now they have a new legend who, obviously, owns us.”

If you do this, the beating that will take place this year in Jacksonville, will be a lot easier to digest. Last years Florida team may be the worst for a while.

All of my fellow Gamecock fans, we’ve said all we can say and we’re still not gettin any respect. So lets just stop postin on this because its not gonna make a difference to “them”. UGA fans will always think that they’re the best team in the nation and one day they’ll find out different. The only people who show us respect anyway are fans from a couple teams in the west (LSU and Auburn) and everyone in the east except UGA and UF. Hell, even Clemson fans show us more respect. Let everybody think what they want to think, because arguing only gives “them” what they want. One day we’ll show ‘em and everybody will see what we’ve been talkin bout over the past 3 years.

I was thinking of posting these comments on the Atlanta Journal Constitutional blog (full of UGA fans) and see what they think. Would you take a look at it before I got running my mouth?

This is going to be one of the most exciting years SEC Football has seen in some time. It seems every team (at least in the East) has the talent and ability to go to win the title! Top to bottom the SEC East is stacked this year. Unfortunately UGA fans I don’t see this year being the year of the DAWG, maybe next year? UT is always a problem and will do very well this year. It’s hard to say if the defense can keep it together to get through the season and on to Atlanta but the offense will be fine. South Carolina has an amazing coach but I don’t think he will be able to pull off a title this year. Just like UGA, maybe next year? Kentucky and Vanderbilt are teams that will scare the sht out of you. Just ask Florida! Every year everyone comments on how Vandy and Kentucky suck and they can’t win and so on…ask a true Gator fan what they think of Vandy and guess what they’ll say? You’d better be ready for a tough game. Over the recent years Vandy has consistently played the big games/teams very well. They do have their slip-ups (UT ‘06) but overall they play tough, hard-nosed football. 4 of their 8 loses last year (and 4 of their 6 in 2005) were by 7 points or less. And those games weren’t to some D-AA or bottom dweller team in CUSA they were to: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss, Kentucky and South Carolina. - two of which were in the SEC Championship game. If South Carolina deserves the right to defend their honor by saying it took the National Champ blocking a field goal to beat them then why doesn’t Vandy deserve that opportunity to claim respect for their program? It took double overtime in ’05 and a bad spot call on 4th down on the Florida 4yd line to lose to Florida in ’06. They also beat UT at Knoxville in a year when they were pre-season ranked #2. And finally, they beat UGA between the hedges last year. That’s impressive for the only private school in the fastest, most dominating/talented conference in the World!!!! Doesn’t that say something about their program and where it’s heading! I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this, “Depending on October’s outcome, don’t be surprised to see Vandy find a little magic in Nashville and find themselves battling for a shot at Atlanta as the season comes to an end.” Laugh all you want Vols/Dawgs/Gamecocks fans but you can bet you’re a* that the defended champ isn’t laughing. They know how dangerous Vandy can be on the field. And with all of the talent, experience, and actual resemblance of depth in their roster they actually have more than a shot in H*ll of doing it! Now, moving on to the National Champ Gators, first, for all of those ignorant people that have comments to make about young Tim Tebow, let me educate you. He was a freshman that towered over the senior QB of one of the biggest universities in the nation. He had size, speed, and a mature head and was utilized perfectly in that offense. As far as the passes he has made over the past season, I wouldn’t worry about it. He was in-fact still a true freshman playing at the national level. And for those of you not living the tropical lifestyle in Florida you might want to look into what he did in HS. He just happened to break almost every passing record in the state. The boy has a cannon for an arm and is not afraid to use it! Match that with his size and watch out LB’s, he’s coming for you!! As far as the posted comment about waiting for an SEC LB to pop him once to official welcome him to the SEC. Did you forget how he man-handled the LSU LB’s and DB’s. The boy is not scared of contact and I honestly believe he prefers it. Second, they lost a lot of talented starters, let me say that again - starters, but don’t forget they had the best recruiting class two years in a row with an even bigger QB coming in this year capable of doing what Tebow did last year. I don’t see them having too many problems playing their game over the next few years.

Final SEC comments: I agree with some of the comments walking off the BCS stage. There are at least 5 or 6 teams in the SEC that could have competed in that game and I believe every team in the SEC East and at least LSU and Auburn could have played in that game, and played well! Vandy started the season with a rookie QB attempting to fill the best QB in the SEC’s shoes and played better defense against Michigan than Ohio State’s did. That’s saying something there! When conference’s lower ranking teams play better than the pre-BCS game national consenus champ then people might want to re-think their selection process.

Every BCS Championship Game should be the SEC Champ vs. #2, period!!!!

A 100% improvement is double the previous score. For example, a score of 7 points in year 1 and 14 points in year 2 is a 100% improvement. Last year South Carolina scored zero points against Georgia. Since 0 * X = 0 for all real X, any increase in South Carolina’s score this year cannot be given as a percent improvement.

It’s kind of like my donation to the United Way. Every year I get a form asking me to increase my annual donation. I always put myself down for a 400% increase. This results in an e-mail from HR singling me out for my generousity. Yet, I still donate the same amount, $0.

Axman, what exactly is “saying all you can”. So far all we have heard in here is a bunch of bravado, and absolutely no substance. I’m pretty sure we have invited any logical discussion of how, when both teams are likely better than last year, how it is such a certainty that SC will come to Athens and beat the Dawgs. I think the point is history, most recently the SHUT OUT in your stadium, (giving up 6 turnovers to you) tells us, as well as any analysis,we will still have the edge. Want some respect????? earn it. You think this is the year, great, but save your indignation that your rivals dont want to beleive it, simply becasue you have managed to post a few self promoting barbs on a Dawg blog. Do you really not understand why folks dont beleive what you have been saying for 3 yrs? because as I remember, its always been that SC will beat UGA in football. Or is it that you have been saying for 3 years now that SC will beat UGA in 2007????And as far as, when you finally do, “then we will see”, well yea buddy, thats kinda how it works.

Thanks to the Vandy man for his analysis of Tebow. It shows that someone is paying attention, even if the root for a rival team. I know it’s difficult or impossible for some fans to appreciate or enjoy watching a player on a rival team, but they are going to miss out. Tebow is one of the most ideal college QBs in a while. He is just great fun to watch, I don’t care who you are.

I could post some stuff about his throwing ability, and use examples like, say the perfect bullet pass into the end zone while rolling out at full speed in the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, but you know, why not just let it be a surprise next year?

Go Gators!!!

I can’t believe I’m saying this but I wouldn’t bet against Kentucky this year. They return practically every player from a team that finished pretty strong.

Can anybody ever remember a year when every game played in the east might be a nail biter.

Vanderbilt will not win the SEC East in 2007; however, the SEC east teams that Vandy upsets will not either!

KY & VU will determine the SEC East winner…count on it.

My guess either ut or GA will be #6 in the East…not VU or KY.

Times are a’changing.

AltamahaDawg: Can’t get your head around it??? Let me help…Would you feel any better if GA had lost to FLA 21-15 last year instead of 21-14? My guess is you’d take being 3-14 against FLA since ‘90 instead of 2-15 any day…Or maybe not…The no-see-ums probably make it hard to think down there below the gnat line in “the other Georgia.”

I agree that Vandy should be expected to improve in what should be a relatively weak year for the SEC. Vandy gets to play Old Mess and Alabama out of the west, with both games at home. They play Kentucky and Georgia at home as well. They play at UT, but last time they played there they won. They play at UF, but last time they played there it was a 2OT game. Plus when is the last time Vandy had a possible first-team all-american at WR??

Vandy has a creampuff schedule out of conference (with the possible exception of overrated Wake, also a home game).

My prediction for Vandy is to sweep its OOC, beat Ole Miss and Bama, and win 1 or 2 more SEC games.

At the top of the SEC East you have a bunch of good QBs but a BUNCH of depth problems. UF is starting a bunch of kids everywhere. UGA has nothing on the offensive line, and also no experience on defense. UT has Ainge, but who is he going to throw the ball to? Kentucky and Vanderbilt return MORE EXPERIENCE and MORE DEPTH than any of the other 4 teams in the SEC East. That is what makes things exciting this year. THings will restore to their natural order in time, but this year a team like South Carolina, Georgia, or Tennessee could finish dead last in the SEC East.

Any SEC East team would finish at least 3rd or 4th in the SEC West, IMO. Ole Miss and MSU are ten times worse than UK and VU, and Alabama would be a strong candidate for 6th place if they were in the SEC-E.

Being a long suffering Gamecock I always hope for the best but have lived with a broken heart for many years. My SEC East prediction:

1) Tenn. 2) Florida 3) South Carolina 4) Georgia 5) Kentucky 6) Vanderbilt If I had money I would bet on LSU to win it all in Atlanta.

The SEC east has as much parity in its ranks than it has had in many years with each team being capable of beating the other. There is so much talk about the talent their effect on individual teams. The Tenn/Ga game, Fla/Ga and SC/Fla games are pivotal games for the outcome of the east. Anyone that thinks that Florida will not just reload with its talent pool is kidding themselves. As a UGA fan, we will be competitve in each game we play with many questions being answered about our youth in the Ok. State and SC games. The SC game will define the Dawgs year. We should be proud of the level of competition that we provide in the SEC East, you can match our top three against anyone in nation on a yearly basis. LSU will most likely win SEC this season!
