Projecting next season’s Top 25
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With the 2006 season in the books, here’s an early look at our projected Top 25 for ‘07:
1. Southern Cal. Dolphins officials reportedly made a trip to Costa Rica over the weekend to court Pete Carroll (right), who’d be wise to stay on campus. All-everything receiver Dwayne Jarrett will likely leave early for the NFL, but the Trojans have a ton of other talent back. So loaded is Southern Cal that John David Booty, who’ll be on a lot of preseason Heisman lists, will have to stave off Mark Sanchez just to keep his starting quarterback job. All but one starter returns on defense.
2. West Virginia. With quarterback Pat White and running back Steve Slaton both set to return, the Mountaineers will be in position to run the table. WVU ought to be undefeated going into its eighth game — against Bobby Petrino-less Louisville — with a non-conference schedule of Ball State, Marshall, Mississippi State, Maryland and East Carolina.
3. Oklahoma. The Sooners will likely lose junior tailback Adrian Peterson to the NFL, but Allen Patrick showed this past fall he’ll be a fine fill-in. If Oklahoma can find an adequate quarterback to replace Paul Thompson — Sam Bradford and Keith Nichol are the top contenders — it should be in the national championship mix.
4. Ohio State. The Buckeyes will sure miss Heisman winner Troy Smith, but if tailback Antonio Pittman and receiver Ted Ginn Jr. decide to stay in school, the new quarterback will have it easy. The defensive line needs work, but Nagurski Award-winning linebacker James Laurinaitis is back. And don’t forget: Ohio State had to replace nine starters on defense in 2006 — and things turned out all right.
5. Florida. Chris Leak, the school’s all-time leading passer, played his last game for the Gators on Monday, but sophomore replacement Tim Tebow should excel in Urban Meyer’s spread offense. There’s plenty of talent at receiver, headlined by Percy Harvin, and four of five starters return on the offensive line. The rebuilding will be done on defense, where safety Reggie Nelson is likely to split early for the NFL.
6. LSU. JaMarcus Russell is reportedly leaving for the NFL, but the Tigers are still stocked with quarterbacks ready to step in. Matt Flynn was the MVP of the 2005 Chick-fil-A Bowl, and Ryan Perriloux was one of the nation’s top recruits two years ago. The Tigers may have a tougher time replacing star safety LaRon Landry and offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher (left Monday for Florida State). The SEC schedule gets easier for the Tigers, with trips to Mississippi State, Kentucky, Alabama and Ole Miss.
7. Texas. Colt McCoy threw 29 touchdown passes as a freshman, and things will only get better. The 2005 national champs stumbled down the stretch this fall, but Mack Brown has recruited so well that the Longhorns should challenge Oklahoma for the Big 12 South. Strength: wide receiver (Limas Sweed, Billy Pittman, Quan Cosby). Weakness: a hole-filled secondary.
8. Michigan. Defensive tackle Alan Branch announced Monday he’s leaving early for the NFL, but quarterback Chad Henne and tailback Mike Hart say they will be back. Michigan likely will start the season a little bit higher in most polls, but the Rose Bowl stinker against Southern Cal is too fresh to put them in the top five now.
9. Arkansas. The ground game is as good as it gets, with Heisman favorite Darren McFadden headed into his junior season. But the Hogs have to get better in the passing game, which struggled under Mitch Mustain and Casey Dick. Three more causes for concern: SEC sack leader Jamaal Anderson and cornerback Chris Houston are leaving for the NFL, and the schedule includes trips to LSU, Tennessee and Alabama.
10. Virginia Tech. After Sean Glennon’s meltdown in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, there are questions about whether the sophomore can hang on to the starting quarterback job. The rest of the offense is in great shape, with 1,137-yard rusher Brandon Ore at tailback and one of the nation’s top receiving groups. Eight starters return to the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense.
11. Louisville. The Cardinals might be able to survive the loss of Petrino. But if they also lose quarterback Brian Brohm and tailback Michael Bush to the NFL, they’ll have a tough time coming close to matching this season’s 12-1 team.
12. Wake Forest. Jim Grobe has said the 2007 version of the Demon Deacons could be even better than Wake’s 2006 ACC champs. If tailback Micah Andrews (Greater Atlanta Christian) makes it all the way back from knee surgery, the offense could be one of the ACC’s finest.
13. Wisconsin. The bad news: The Badgers need a new quarterback — and he’ll have to lead the team against Ohio State (away) and Michigan (home) on back-to-back weekends. The good news: John Stocco’s replacement under center can hand the ball to star tailback P.J. Hill.
14. Auburn. If the Tigers can find some receivers and a few linemen, quarterback Brandon Cox should be able to bounce back from a junior season to forget. After waiting his turn behind fellow former Gwinnett County star Kenny Irons, Parkview’s Brad Lester will likely be the feature back. The schedule could be an issue, with trips to LSU, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia.
15. Nebraska. Bill Callahan’s Cornhuskers are coming off a Big 12 North title but finished the season with a thud in the Big 12 final, then the Cotton Bowl. Former Arizona State quarterback Sam Keller, who has one year of eligibility left, could step in and make the offense even better than it was under Zac Taylor.
16. Georgia. The Bulldogs will find out today if they finished the season among the nationally ranked, but either way, they’ll take some serious momentum into spring practice after knocking off Auburn, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. The offensive line will be a major concern, Georgia needs some young linebackers to come through, and the schedule is challenging from the start (Oklahoma State in week 1, South Carolina in week 2).
17. Tennessee . Record-setting receiver Robert Meachem decided to turn pro early, but the offense still should be among the SEC’s finest with Erik Ainge handing off to Montario Hardesty, LaMarcus Coker and Arian Foster. After going 5-6 in 2005, Tennessee took a step in the right direction this fall. But Phillip Fulmer needs to take another one in 2007 to keep the critics at bay.
18. Rutgers. With tailback Ray Rice back to challenge Arkansas’ McFadden for the Heisman, the offense should be strong again. But Greg Schiano has to fill some big holes on defense, which could keep the Scarlet Knights from challenging West Virginia and Louisville for the Big East crown.
19. South Carolina. South Carolina’s hope of making mischief in the SEC suffered a setback Sunday when star receiver Sidney Rice announced he was NFL-bound. But Spurrier has settled on his quarterback (LaGrange’s Blake Mitchell) and returns one of the SEC’s top rushing tandems (Cory Boyd, Mike Davis). The schedule’s tough, with trips to Georgia, LSU, Tennessee and Arkansas.
20. Florida State. Because the Seminoles had to play so many young guys on defense during an injury-riddled 2006, FSU will be loaded on that side of the ball. The big question in Tallahassee: Will new coordinator Jimbo Fisher be able to take quarterback Drew Weatherford’s game to the next level?
21. Notre Dame. This may be a little lofty for the Irish, who lose Brady Quinn, Jeff Samardjiza and three offensive linemen. Star recruit Jimmy Clausen will get a long look at quarterback, former Buford High star Darius Walker is back at tailback, and the defense has nowhere to go but up.
22. Texas A&M. The Aggies bought themselves a lot of good will by beating Texas, then took a step backward in a Holiday Bowl drubbing by Cal. Most of the key guys are back on offense, and eight starters return on defense.
23. TCU. The Horned Frogs might have to rely on a defense that welcomes back nine starters while Gary Patterson breaks in a new quarterback and tailback.
24. Boise State. Quarterback Jared Zabransky is gone, but tailback Ian Johnson, the other star of last week’s upset of Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, returns.
25. Oklahoma State. Georgia’s in for a tougher season-opening test than usual. The Cowboys bring back Dantrell Savage, who could be an All-Big 12 running back, as well as starting quarterback Bobby Reid.
Best of the rest: 26. Maryland, 27. Alabama, 28. Clemson, 29. Penn State, 30. UCLA, 31. Arizona State, 32. Miami, 33. Texas Tech, 34. Cal, 35. Houston, 36. South Florida, 37. BYU, 38. Hawaii, 39. Iowa, 40. Oregon State

Are you kidding me? Where’s Georgia Tech? Besides Calvin and Reggie (Addition by subtraction) the team pretty much stays intact. Add in a little experience and some talented freshmen, I think we should at least be in the top 40. I’m sure even UGA fans should agree.

Still not giving BSU any respect. They may end up as the only undefeated team in the nation and everyone still gives them no respect. A top 15 ranking should be a good start to next year.

Tony you are a Tard. VT at 10 and okl. at 3. Fl. will be a 4 loss team next year. Teebow has a lot to learn to be a passer in the sec and defenses started keying in on his running.

Interesting, Tony Barnhart have given the dogs a preseason ranking of 16. About the same ranking I give Barnhart as a sports writer within the State of Georgia.

Barnhart lost all credibility when he picked uga on tv but tech on the internet. Typical flip-flopping media. Have some balls and keep to a single pick.
Notice how many “ifs” are in this list? There is no point in doing a college football preseason until after jan 15.

Tony, your killing us!
The Dawgs are a rising! We took the #5 team in the country to the Woodshed in AU! On their Turf!
We then beat our instate Rivals best team since their MNC of ‘90 at Home with our worst team of the Richt Era.
Then we took the #1 D to the Woodshed!
All beind a True Frosh QB, a DE playing TE, and makeshift OL(this next years will be better simply because they’ll be twice as athletic and twice as deep) and no deep threat at WR!(We got a healthy AJ,Bailey is back and watch TD Tony Wilson.
Then the D while young will be the Fastest and most vicious in the the Dawgs history, even faster then the Vaunted ‘02 CREW!
No Sir we win 10 games and get ready for the ‘08 MNC Run!

Tony, throught out the entire year you rode Matthew Stafford like he was a CALF in a rodeo. I know you went to Ga. No, a caveat, I think you went to Ga. You mentioned a young “OL”. Why don’t you tell everybody how young the Reptiles “OL” was to start the ‘06 season? Oh, didn’t Ohio St. have to replace 9 players on “D”? Is it safe to say that both teams have done well? We have to prove it on the field and not in your column. So keep on typing and the Dawgs will keep on playing then in Dec. we’ll compare your rankings with the Dawgs winnings.

There aren’t 15 teams better than UGA, Tech is better than top 40, Auburn is overrated, Notre Dame is too lofty as you suggested they “may be”.
Additionally, how can you put Oklahoma at #3. They may be a top 10 or 15 team, but don’t have near the talent as Texas.

Bama had one of the best teams inbetween the 20’s. How can you not rank them in the top 25.The coach we got can make the right calls to get it in for 6 and not 3.
By GT Baby

Im a little surprised that GT is not ranked in the top 40..I know with Calvin going to the NFL hurts but with Ball gone and Taylor Bennett playing like he did in
Jacksonville and with Choice back after leading the acc in rushing we’d be at least in the top 25.
Bennett is a better QB than Ball.
Choice is back after leading ACC in rushing.
Georgia Tech has a Top 15 recruiting season.
Patrick Nix has another year in the system.
We lost Anoai,Scott,C.Johnson,Hall,Wrotto, and a couple other seniors who didnt matter.
We were robbed by the rankings but as i read earlier by some of you bloggers..its early and this doesnt mean sh!t.

He is plain stupid! He placed Ohio State above Fl, and look at the score now. The SEC always whips Big Ten schools. He knows nothing about the coaching prowess of Nick Saban. He is illiterate, dumb and stupid. He obviously is unaware of graduation of players from several teams, one being Auburn. My cat could do a better job than he has done.

The only reason Barnfart left GT out of the top 40 was to get a rise out of people. If he truly believes they won’t be a top 40 team then it is because he is old and getting senile. I love how he thinks Ok St is going to be top 25. What a freakin tool…

Florida is killing OSU! Dude, put down the pipe. UGA will be a top 5 team, also. You must be from the West coast? The Pac-10, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, ACC are all inferior to the SEC. You get tested every week in the SEC. There are no easy games. The SEC is 6-3 in bowl games… And, the Florida vs. OSU game is at the half-time during this post. No other conference has more teams or a better winning bowl percentage. All of you sports writers need to give the SEC their due credit and stop crowning these weak teams from weak conferences the champs. The SEC has had at least 5 teams in the top 25 for the past 15 years. You want to talk about tradition? You guys better be prepared to eat a lot of crow.

I think we will have a good season next year, but I hate seeing UF win another one. The question is can Richt now over come his worst nemesis Freaky Orange Helmets and Jax gods/refs and take us all the way? ever OR are we looking at another Legend with Urban “I am really cocky” Meyer owning the east for years. Is Tebow gonna be a great all around QB? I sure do hope not. I am frustrated by the Gators success over our red and black teams for decades and watching them win another just ticks me off!!!! I mean in both sports this year. Unbelievable does UGA even have a half bball program?
Hey for all of you that actualy went to school in Athens it sure is way better than sorry Gainesville is, I guess Gainesville is so lame they have to have their markee sports to excell. Back when I went to UGA we wondered if they weren’t trying to sabotage the whole football team.

Tony, Normally like your stuff, but how can you put Ohio State,Oklahoma and LSU that high when ALL are replacing QB’s. Anytime you lose your starting QB,unless your maybe USC, you should automatically be put outside the top 5.
Yes we hate Florida, but I love the SEC and I love this a* whipping.
And yes, I think Ohio State losing their entire defense did make a difference, they placed two tough teams this year and both ran up and down the field. DAWGS need to be closer to 12th or 13th…..

Go ahead and take all Big 10 teams off this list. Maybe Michigan and OSU should have played each other in the Big Ten bowl and let the real teams - LSU, UF, USC - play each other. While your at it, take Nortre Dame off for good. They should be banned from BCS play until they actually prove they can beat a team out of the military ranks. Congrats Florida. Still hate ya!

Tech might win five games next year. As bad as Reggie was, opponents are going to figure out Bennett pretty quickly. Except against Georgia, you could never be sure which Reggie would show up, which sometimes was a plus. Bennett is already OVER-rated. By the way, the insects have the worst loser fans in America who are also delusional. Why do they wear that disgraceful yellow attire when gold is supposedly their color?

I think Tardy Barnfart will include Tech in the rankings when Bennett wins against a ranked team. Seeing as though Ball could barely manage that this year with choice and Johnson, I don’t see you ranked preseason anytime soon. You techies better be worried about keeping your coaching staff together more than your rankings.

You’ve got to be kidding. I’ve been and will always be a Gailey critic most likely but do have some acumen for potential. GT now has a QB, and many more in the wings something it has’nt had really even with Jones and Hamilton and Godsey, depth and talent. Tech has been competitive with a sub 50% passing completion ratio. Get that up to 60% and keep Tenuta and Tech has a 2 to 3 loss team at worst and a National Contender at best. You heard it hear first Tech will compete for the title next year.

Boise State beats OK, in a game in which OK was lucky (punt bouncing off a BSU blocker’s foot with Boise leading 28-10) to even get close at the end.
I don’t begrudge your giving OK a high rank, but BSU all the way down at 23 or 24?
Schedule more big-name opponents, they all say, if you want real respect. But I betcha no big name team has any interest in visiting the Blue Turf any time soon, for fear of being Broncoed. It’s a catch-22 for Boise.

The only “GODS” in J’ville wear Red headgear. We make or break ourselves. The Football Gods will turn Bobo and his boy loose. Now, if our new line coach can coach’um up and we open the play book we’ll win. Did you notice that the Reptiles didn’t comp-lete a pass of over 20 yds. the entire game? We have a trigger man he will do that IF OUR wrs will catch the ball. Stafford p-layed a gutsey 2nd half against Va.Tech(SI’s words not mind). Watch out!….prediction time: Bobo will run so many 4 & 5 receiver sets that will allow stafford to go wild. The spread “O”, we all saw tonight is what the kid grew up playing in. Dawgs, forget about any RB running back haveing 25 carries. That day has gone by the boards but we will see the RBs involved the way we did in the 2nd half of the bowl game. In all sincerity, as a 22-year Gator fan (and an actual University of Florida alumnus), I would like to thank the University of Georgia football players and coaches for making the Gators’ second national football championship possible … and also thanks to the players and coaches of Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Arkansas, too. No, I’m not being facetious; yes, I’m serious. Oh, yeah, and special thanks to the Auburn players and coaches for reminding the young Gator gridders that they were not invincible, and that a little luck plays as big a part as heart and determination in winning.
Here’s the rub: the SEC competition that the Gators faced in 9 games this season made this team what it is. Hardened by its competition, experienced in winning close games against SEC teams that refused to quit, and confident of its own abilities because it had played and prevailed against 8 teams from the best college football conference in the country. The Buckeyes, as great a team as they may have been, did not have the benefit of such competition, and it showed in last night’s game. Having never tasted defeat this season, the Ohio State players and coaches didn’t believe it was possible before tonight. The Gators, having won 5 games by a touchdown or less, and having staged more than one come-from-behind win, didn’t lose their composure when they quickly found themselves trailing the heavily favored Buckeyes. When the tide of momentum quickly turned, Ohio State couldn’t draw on the same psychologically hardened reserves, and they lost their edge.
So, thank you, Vols, ‘Cats, Tide, Tigers, Dawgs, ‘Dores, ‘Cocks and Razorbacks. In a way, this is your Gator team, too; your teams’ play made the Gators into the champions that they were last night.
I make no predictions for next season, nor do I taunt the Gators’ rivals and fans. There will be time enough for predictions, taunts and recriminations later. I simply remind Gator players, coaches and fans to savor this special moment. Something like last evening in Arizona doesn’t happen every season and few players and coaches will ever get to feel this exhilaration. Most schools and teams never do.
This morning, I am one happy Gator fan, but this moment doesn’t belong to “Gator Nation.” This championship belongs to the young Gators who won it on the field, and left no doubt who was the best team in the last game of a very long 2006 season.

But you SEC people need to get a grip…Penn State stuffed Tennessee’s offense and Wisconsin kept next year’s heisman front-runner at bay. I believe you are mistaken by not placing Georgia Tech in your top 20. They lose only one offensive linemen, one linebacker, one defensive back, one defensive lineman, both tightends, one quarterback and Calvin. Maybe your knowledge is not that great when it comes to Georgia Tech football or you don’t care. You might want to get out of the office every now and then. Never seen you at practice. Waiting for playing time are a couple of guys that will surprise you. Collin Peek, Ben Anderson, Cord Howard and Anthony Barnes, remember those names.

I have to agree with Mike, even though Chan has not been able to finish in the Top 25 at the end of the season yet. I predict the Jackets around 8-4 to 9-3 with their schedule. Should they win their bowl game that would put them in the Top 25. The “extra” ACCCG loss knocked them out this year. Anyway, when Barnhart gives Tech credit they fold anyway so I’m happy with this prediction.

Absolutly ridiculous!!! Gators go out and make a statement like that and this bonehead has them ranked 5th starting next season!! Plus you have them ranked under the team they destroyed!! Souther Cal is so loaded it’s scary, after playing lots of freshman and sophs this year. Consensus preseason #1. Notre Dame? The Irish are even more annoying than that freakin Dodge Ram commercial with the RockEm SockEm robots. I wish there would be one year where ND actually earned their ranking, preseason or otherwise. Watch for a breakout season for Arizona, where the “other” Stoops has been busy recruiting like crazy and rebuilding a program that was in shambles. And the SEC is going to be loaded top to bottom next year—-well, eleven any way, ignoring Vandy. And people wonder why I love college sports and detest all of the pro leagues. CONGRATS GATORS!!

As far as FSU goes, hopefully Bowden acquiesces to Jimbo Fisher with respect to the starting QB selection (I am hoping this was a condition precedent to Jimbo taking the gig). If so, look for immensely more talented Xavier Lee to assume the reins.

Tony - To pick teams at this time, especially right before signing day, is ridiculous. You “journalists” think you are so much smarter than everyone else, and since ESPN gives you a little recognition every once in awhile, it has certainly gone to your head! All we hear about is Michigan, who will not schedule UGA by the way as per Damon Evans, Ohio State, Notre Dame and USC. Well, Notre Dame got their rears whipped by LSU and now Ohio State has taken their lumps (big ones, too)so if you want to play with the big boys Michigan, the door is open! USC, you are the only one of those 4 that deserves the respect and press you get. If the SEC keeps beating each other up, the trend will continue to ignore the SEC. And for the blogger, Big Ten 2, SEC 1, I say check your history. Remember in recent years how UGA kicked Wisconsin and Ohio State in bowl games.Short memories are very convenient, huh? Now, I want to congratulate the Gators on their victory, as much as I hate to admit it, and say, you did us proud. You showed the world what kind of football is played in the SEC and in the South in general. If the rest of the US doesn’t want to recognize that, then that is their problem. SEC…………..’nuff said!

Auburn is vastly underrated, as is the SEC. The Big Ten (2-5) is way overrated as is the Big 12. Auburn beats the #1 and #3 teams in the final rankings. Auburn loses to a surprising Arkansas team and fell asleep to a Georgia team that had just lost to Vanderbilt (both early a.m games). Auburn’s body clock was an hour earlier than GAs on that Saturday given the time differential (EST vs. CST) and that probably explains that game along with overconfidence in not being able to take GA seriously as an opponent after their losses to Vandy etc.
SEC takes down perinnial media favorites: Nebraska, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Houston and Virginia Tech! Barely loses to Wisconsin and Penn State (after a late 88 yd fumble return when UT was driving for a score).
Big East beats powerhouses: Western Michigan, Wake Forest, Kansas State, East Carolina and GT; so don’t even start with the 5-0 Big East record!!

I think Tony has the dogs about right maybe even a little high, until I see that the new o-line can be productive I think the dogs next year our a low top 25 team. Schedule is pretty brutal with Oklahoma St., South Carolina, Tennesse (Away), Alabama (Away), Auburn, FL (Away) and Georgia Tech (Away)- I think the Dogs based on what I know right know will do well at 8-4/7-5. If the oline comes together, Stafford continues to progress, and finally a couple of consistent wide reciever threats emerge and the defense is pretty stout as I expect and the balls bounce are way, I think next years team has cap of 9-3 maybe 10-2. I think the year we can compete for an SEC title and have an amazing year would be 2008.

Mel, I agree that Auburn is a strong team and I think Tuberville and his staff have consistently become one of the best in the country. You all do an excellent job recruiting three and four star kids and coaching them up. That said, it is pretty weak to blame two pathetic showings on the time of the game. That is weak. If you can’t get up for a game when you are undefeated, playing at home, and in the national championship picture, that is just sad. If you can’t get up for a game when you are in the top 5, playing at home, against probably your number two rival in UGA, and you are still in the hunt for both an SEC title and an NCAA title, again that is just sad.

cre, my sentiments exactly about Mel-to blame a loss on the starting time of the game to one of your rivals -pathetic. although Auburn was not undefeated at the time because they had already lost to Arkansas earlier in the year. Bottm line - why is a preseason ranking out this early in the year anyway. Its not just Barnhart - i’m willing to guess that the poll any other ‘expert’ has at this point will not be anywhere close to the final rankings at the end of the year. Just watched the post game coverage of the title game and the top five projections of the guys on the panel and they’re all different. In other words - IT’S JUST AN OPINION!!!

Over the last 7 seasons, if you count only bowls between Big Ten vs SEC teams, the Big Ten has won more matchups. Go ahead, look at the records and count them. And the Big Ten did it again this year versus the SEC, two to one.
So, congrats to Florida. They were the better team last night by far. But I’d hate for the rest of SEC nation to try to take credit for Florida’s victory. The facts are, against the Big Ten, top to bottom, your conference has not come out ahead in recent years.
The Big Ten took their lumps this bowl season, so you may want to say the Big Ten is lousy - but you should note the ONLY bowl wins the Big Ten enjoyed this year were versus SEC teams. Thank goodness for the SEC, otherwise the Big Ten may not have been able to beat anybody!

Big10 Bob:
Yes, wisconsin beat Arkansas by 3, despite losing both the total yards and time of possession. Please consider however, that Arkansas’ best weapon, Darren McFadden, was obviously and painfully slowed by a high ankle sprain suffered during the SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (something y’all don’t have in the Big11). Congrats to UF, who without their best DT, absolutely destroyed THE BEST TEAM IN THE BIG11. OSU wouldn’t have even scored 2 TDs without the refs assistance. The opening kickoff return featured a blatant hold on Reggie Nelson that allowed TGJr to get around the edge and a large chunk of Overrated State’s yards on their lone TD drive came on penalties.
Top 2 Big11 teams get DESTROYED in the BCS: It’s no wonder that your conference president, Jim Delaney, is so scared of a BCS playoff. (see link) http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=jo-delany010507&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

After the meltdowns against UGA and Wake, I’ve got no problem with TB or any other writer who leaves Tech off their preseason polls. The end of the year poll is the one that matters and Tech would be ranked no lower than 15th if they had taken care of business at the end of the season.
As noted above and shown in the Gator Bowl, losing Ball at QB improves the offense dramatically. While there is no replacing Calvin, Tech is stocked with several other good receivers and Choice returns with at least two really good backups at RB.
The losses on D are more significant, as Anoai, Hall and Scott were all really great as seniors. If Philip Wheeler stays for his senior year, our linebackers will still be really good with Guyton and some talented underclassmen stepping in. Whoever steps in as Anoai’s replacement has big shoes to fill as a run-stopper. The secondary was awfully young this year and should play better with another year of experience under their belt.
Add in a talented recruiting class that is likely to have at least 3 or 4 impact players and a number of backups to provide depth and things really look very good for Tech.
Let everyone else think Tech is going to struggle next year, but Tech fans know that a team that lost 4 games by a total of 14 points this year is poised to be even better next year.

Big11 #1 vs SEC#1= blow out Big11 #3 vs SEC#4= narrow escape (see last post) Big11 #4 vs SEC#5= 10 point win decided by a fumble return for a TD when UT was driving to put the game away So, in summary, the Big 11 narrowly beats the SEC when they’re the higher seed (and enjoy other advantages), but when they’re even, they get toasted.

All true, flightdocdawg. Florida dominated the Big Ten’s top team this year. But I’m not talking about merely comparing the top SEC team to the top Big Ten team. I’m talking about comparing the two conferences, top to bottom. After all, while USC has been one of the best teams in the country over the last few years, we’d both agree the PAC-10 can hardly claim to be the best conference. Conference bragging rights are about head to head matchups between all teams in the conferences, not just the top teams. And it’s there that the results do not tip in your favor.

CW, you make some excellent points. Reggie is truly “addition by subtraction.” We Tech fans appreciate his contributions the last 4 years, but in the end, he was just not as good of a QB. Yes, Calvin’s loss will definitely hurt but adding Taylor and our other WRs will more than make up for it.
Defensively, we may take a half-step backward, but we always reload nicely (especially in the secondary) and our incoming class has lots of possibilities.
Tech is definitely turning the corner. Having CCG around will give the program some much-needed stability, and a boost to further recruiting years. No, he’s not exactly the best coach anyone has, but this stability will help attract additional kids.

Still not an SEC team at the top huh? Do you idiot sportswriters never learn? Do you ever get tired of eating crow. I guess the premier conference in the land will have to once again prove we are the best. Take your pick for National Title contenders out of the SEC. Who do you want? UGA? Auburn? LSU? Florida? Arkansas? Tennessee? Possibly Bama? Any three of those teams will be in the title hunt and you don’t have anyone from the SEC until number 5 Florida? Keep being a moron. For all of you UGA fans, we can at least celebrate the dominance of the SEC this season. UGA, FLorida, LSU, Kentucky, Auburn, and South Carolina all won in their bowls and the SEC East went 4-1 in bowl games. Makes our conference and division even tougher! But for the UGA fans, don’t get too excited about any preseason ranking. You will have all you can handle the second game of the year in 2007!

Ohio State maintained their perfect record - 0 for 8 in post-season play versus the SEC. Florida played at least five teams during the regular season that were superior to OSU. Vandy, the worst team in the SEC, gave Michigan all they wanted when this season started.
If the Big Ten (11) ever sees the kind of parity that now exists in the SEC, then they may be prepared to play in a post-season championship game.
You guys can laugh at the SEC beating up on each other all season and speculate that it means that none of us are really that good, since we can’t dominate one another, but the competition pays off when the bullet hits the bone.
We’ll be back next year to do it again.
Here’s where we stand now IMHO:
1 Florida 2 Boise State 3 LSU 4 OSU 5 Louisville 6 Auburn 7 USC 8 West Virginia 9 Michigan 10 Oklahoma

I know that this is blasphemy, but I don’t think that there should be any polls until October. This might stop the annual media “crowning of the champs” in August, and allow actual talent and play make the difference.
Look at this past year - the media had chosen OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame and Southern Cal as its “Big 4” teams, with noone else having been given a chance to reach number 1 during the season. And what happened to three of these big four? OSU, Michigan and Notre Dame were soundly clobbered in their bowl games.
If there were no polls - no polls at all, not just no BCS poll - until October, then maybe the rankings might actual refelct the play being seen that season instead of the popularity of the programs…

Tony, is the Atlanta media bias that bad, did you just make a typo, or did you randomly pull all teams after 10 out of a hat?
First off (so I don’t just talk about my bias), Miami at #32? They were an underperforming team in 06, but vastly more talented next year than most of the 11-25 teams you’ve got listed.
Now, GT not even listed? HUGE mistake! 4 out of 5 linemen return for their 3rd season with those 4 on the line.
Calvin is gone, but we’ll be in as good of a situation as anyone with the luxury of redshirting 4-star recruits. Remember this name at WR: Demarius Thompson. Almost identical stats to Calvin coming out of high school and redshirted last year. Could be better than James Johnson next year.
You can’t say enough about Choice, but we’ve also got a stable of STUD running backs that will be 5 deep next year.
QB will be a position of STRENGTH for us next year as opposed to the last five years. With Bennet or Threet likely starting at QB, we’ll be in great shape.
GT’s defense will only improve. Our grey shirted freshman LB next year is rumored to be the best we’ve had since Brooking (4 or 5 NFL LBs since then). And our D-line only gets stronger next year.
Finally, even the people who think Chan is a moron must admit that he is probably one of the best developers of talent in the country. Every year we get the 50th ranked recruiting class yet somehow make our way in the top 20 and turn out a few NFL players. Well, now we’ve got a class that competes with most high end SEC classes for size and speed and talent. If Chan develops this class as he has with others, we’re likely to have a phenominal 4 years with this incomming class.
Bottom line for next year: win at ND, win against Clemson, win against UGA. With those three extra wins, I expect we’ll be 10-2 (VT and a sleeper). Next year will be the first of an in state shift of power that will last at least two years.
By the way, the next 8 months are going to suck!

I’ve got to agree with Victor. They’re losing their entire offensive line. I don’t know about their TE, but at most they’re bringing back 4 offensvie starters and lost their 2 best on defense. I don’t think that puts them 4 spots ahead of Miami.

No ACC team should be ranked in the top 40, and no Little 11 teams should be in the top 20. You people realize that if football had a playoff like march madness that the final four this year would have been: LSU, Florida, Georgia, and Auburn. Say what you want about my comment but look at the BCS results SEC 82 to 28. By far the strongest bowl schedule of anyone and they went 6-3. So, does Michigan still deserve to play Ohio State? I would like for everyone on here to listen to Colin Cowherd’s show on ESPN radio, he is the most logical and honest media personality of all time. He admits that ESPN pushes the Big 10, because they have a contract with them. And I agree with his statments today - Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame may have been the most overrated teams in the history of college football- When you play the schedule that SEC teams play week in and week out no way teams can go undefeated. Would Ohio State have a winning record in the SEC, probably not. Someone please make a logical argument that the final four would have a team outside of the SEC in it, the only team with a shot would have been USC because their speed compares. No polls in my opinion should come out until mid-october, the rankings would be a lot more accurate and hence the final two teams in the championship would probably be more accurate as well.
On the championship game, #1, there should not be a 7 or 8 week layoff. #2, FL is very talented and like I have said all year I don’t know how anyone can stop that many weopens and then also face a very good defense.
To me when they played their best, USC and FL were the best teams in the country this year.

Insects, no rankings for you. Bennett will be run all over the field in real games, and Tenuta’s defense, as usual, will be overhyped and overrated. Get a clue: one decent game (and a loss at that) does not a QB make. You have no depth, and you lost the only key frontliners you had (Reggie not included).

The Horns are, I hate to say this, over-rated. They barely beat a 6-6 team and lost to KSU. I’d put UT at #17, OU at #7 (gulp), A&M at #14 (double gulp) and no team from the state of Virginia in the top 15.

Josh, I think you forgot a team in your top 25 - like South Carolina! Returning 10 starters on defense and a 5th year QB, two startings RBs, starting WR, etc. Probably more experience coming back for USC than UGA. I think they need to be included! Basically, we are returning the same time (minus Sidney Rice) that went 8-5 this year.

TX Dawg, I think you might want to consider SOuth Carolina as well. 10 starters back on D as well as a 5th year QB, both RBs, and a starting WR. Only concern may be a couple of OL but a couple have RS and a JUCO might help. I think USC will challenge for the SEC as well - even SPurrier admits that. The second game of the season may be a huge factor in determining the seasons for both UGA and USC.

Where is Boston College, Tony? They return a senior QB, their running backs and most of their best on defense. They also had ten wins (6 against bowl teams) in 2006. Instead, you put Notre Dame in the top 20 with a freshman quarterback and no apparent defense. BC will beat Notre Dame, Clemson and all the rest again. I am tired of this lack of respect. I expected better than that from you.

I know this is a SEC/ACC blog(aka Big 10 bashers), but when was the last time an SEC team won the Nat’l title? Don’t act like the SEC wins it every year. I dont think they’re any better than the Big 10. My hats off to Florida for dominating OSU, but the Big 10 is still 2-1 against the SEC in bowl games this year. OSU overrated? What about UT and Arkansas? They lost fair and square to better teams in Penn State and Wisconsin. Those teams proved they were better and PSU proved they were just as “fast” as the the so called burners from Tenn. FYI, look out for Penn State next year. They lose POZ(Who would dominate SEC offenses), and Tony Hunt. They return their quarterback, wideouts, and most of the nucleus of their defense. And dont forget JOEPA. They’ll have speed and experience. Watch out. WE ARE PENN STATE! Congrats SEC. Your still 1-2 against the BIG 10. I laugh last.

The Grinch, Gator Guy and other Gator Fans,
Congratulations on a great win and season. Your team proved that they were the best College Football team in the nation this year. They proved it by playing the toughest schedule in the best conference as well. So savor this championship and thanks for beating The Ohio State University, making the SEC look good and making OSU look extremely overrated.

I apologize. I see you put Notre Dame at 21. However, Boston College is not in your top 40. How many times does BC need to beat the likes of Notre Dame and Clemson before they are recognized as the true power in football that they are. Have a happy new year.

To the Penn State fan named Jason:
Here are a few things to consider. First of all, the Big 10 did go 1-2 against the SEC. Yes, PSU did beat UT and that was a small upset. Remember that UT had 3 TOs one of which was the difference in the game with the PSU TD. As far as Ark and Wisc, remember that Wisc was by far the higher ranked team. So they did what they are supposed to do by beating a lesser ranked team. But also note that Ark outgained Wisc by A LOT, dominated most of that game, and had 123 yards in penalties which is why they lost. Ark beat themselves not Wisc. In the 9 SEC bowl games, the teams they were playing were favored in AT LEAST 4 of them. Yet the SEC goes 6-3. The Big 10, with the “top two teams in the country” in OSU and Mich, go 2-5. Since the inception of the BCS in 1998, this will be the 3rd time the SEC has won the national title. 3 times in the last 9 years. The last time being last night and the one before that 2004. Your best team got the crap beat out of them last night. And the other two Big 10 wins against the SEC were because the SEC teams beat themselves not the Big 10 teams beating them. And remember, 6-3 record for the SEC in bowl games. 2-5 for the Big 10. Yes, the SEC is best. And everyone knows it!

The SEC can’t hold the Big 12’s jock. OU is the number one team next year, followed by Texas and A/M. LSU might crack the top five but you are right on with your OU ranking. Try to play that rough schedule we play every year.

Jeremy, Im not at all a Ohio State fan. I love Penn State. I cant stand OSU and their classless fans. Im glad Florida beat them. Florida’s a great team with a great coach. BUT, dont give me the excuse that the only reason the SEC teams lost (TENN, Arkansas) was that they beat themselves. THEY LOST! Ever hear the saying, “A win is a win.” I dont care about over all bowl wins. You SEC know-it-alls make a big deal out of it. But with that being said, this year, BIG 10 in bowls vs. SEC- 2wins and 1 loss. SEC in bowls vs. BIG 10- 1 win and 2 losses. Sorry, its basic math my friend.

Jeremy- Stop making excuses for those teams they lose one. Arkansas got the business and so did tennessee. Further more don’t act like the SEC runs this college football thing because they don’t. The Big 10 is home of the Wolverines. And the last time I checked they had more wins then anyone in the SEC. Like the man said, “YOU PLAY TO WHEN THE GAME.” Do the research. IamMichigan02 Alumni. What are some of you smoking????? Big 12 was 3-5 in bowls and often plays weaker teams. My gosh, one of the best teams in Texas struggled to beat 6-6 Iowa. The big power OU wasn’t just getting beat they were getting spanked before BSU self destructed and they still lost. And the big power A&M got beat worse than any team in a bowl 45-10 by Cal. You are foolish to compare the Big 12 to the SEC. In regards to conference ratings, the Big 12 was 6th out of 8 conferences. The only conferences that were worse were the Mountain West and 1-A Independents. With that said, the Big 10 was ranked #5. Your teams were bad in bowl games, the top ones got beat, and the SEC is CLEARLY better than the Big 12 top to bottom. Even the Big 10 has a better argument than the Big 12 but theirs would be a no win argument as well.
By Jeremy

Ok fine Jason. Take your 3 point wins in the Big 10 over the SEC even the SEC teams outplayed them. By all means you need the bowl wins so the Big 10 didn’t go 0-7 (Remember even with those two losses, the SEC went 6-3!). And since you don’t like OSU, you would be interested to know that OSU is 0-8 against the SEC in bowl games.

Wow tam Michigan! I think I am speechless. Your team gets absolutely SPANKED by USC and you think Michigan is all that. The “awesome” Michigan defense gives up 42 to OSU and 32 to USC and you really think you are that awesome? You play in a weaker conference!!! Don’t believe me? Your conference was 2-5 in bowl games and 0-2 in the BCS! Wake up man! We know what the SEC did as stated. You can have your opinion but when you infer that Mich is better than the SEC, you BETTER get your facts straight. Florida had more wins than Michigan and LSU and Auburn had just as many. All 3 played tougher schedules than Mich did. All three won their bowl games. Michigan did not. How you can justify Mich being better than the SEC I think you are a little off there man!

UGA being 16th seems ureasonable! With the wealth of talent coming back, particularly at the QB position, they should probably be more highly ranked. Thomas Brown should be back at full speed and the addition of new recruits should make them even better. Look for the Dawgs to be even better in ‘07. 07 Preseason standings (Cant be any worse than Tony Barharts)
1.USC (Absolutely loaded everywhere. Great recruiting class. Could hurt if Carroll leaves. Stay tuned.) 2.FLORIDA (Lose Leak, Tebow forced to throw more? Nasty defense) 3.TEXAS (Will be good for yrs to come. QB McCoy returns) 4.WEST VIRGINIA (Pat White, Slaton back.Lost Offensive Line Coach. Could hurt alittle) 5.MICHIGAN (Henne,Hart,Manningham, all coming back. Defense will still be good. Carr awful in big games though.) 6.LSU (Russell gone. Heard backup QB is good. Defense great as usual) 7.PENN STATE (QB Morelli will surprise the nation. Wideouts return. Defense will be solid as usual. Redshirt RB Austin Scott returns. Typical JOEPA RB) 8.FLORIDA STATE (Weatherford will be a Jr. New offensive coord.,more experienced defense. Bowden will have his team back in the hunt.) 9.RUTGERS (Ray Rice will be back, defense should be solid, weak Big East schedule. Could surprise again.) 10.OKLAHOMA (Great defense,? at QB and RB. Should be ranked lower) 11.AUBURN (Cox is back, ? at RB, great SEC defense) 12.VIRGINIA TECH (One of the best defenses in the country,Ore returning will keep them in top 15. QB play must get better.) 13.LOUISVILLE (Lost Petrino. Could lose Bush and Brohm. Could be screwed. My ranking is if Bush and Brohm stay.Petrino’s a big loss) 14.GEORGIA (Will be solid on both sides of the ball, but not great. Tough SEC schedule could exploit weaknesses) 15.OHIO STATE (Lose Smith, probably Ginn, Gonzalez, Pittman. RB Wells will be a beast. Defense will be good again.QB?) 16.ARKANSAS (Heisman hopefull McFadden back. Mustain live up to the hype? Solid defense) 17.UCLA (Dorrell’s team will be better than last years. Weak Pac 10 schedule helps) 18.WISCONSIN (RB Hill returns, QB? Offensive and Defensive lines will be strong even after losing OL Thomas) 19.SOUTH CAROLINA (Spurriers recruits will start kicking in. Offense will improve even after losing Sidney Rice. Defense will struggle) 20.NOTRE DAME (Freshman sensation QB Clausen prob starter. Will struggle in first half of the yr. But will improve. Defense will still be lousy under overrated Weis.) 21.TENNESSEE (Lose Meachum, WRs will still be good for returning Ainge. Have the talent to make a run, but defense is too inconsistant.) 22.ALABAMA (Would’ve had them outside top 25 without Saban. But with him ya never know. Dont like him, but a heck of a college coach.) 23.MIAMI (The U will be back. Lickin their wounds right now. But returning alot of guys and speed. New coach could be a refresher.) 24.BOISE STATE (Lose Zabransky. Only thing keeping them in top 25 is conference play. Say goodbye to the cinderella.) 25.NEBRASKA (QB? Typical goodand solid defense. Playing in Big 12 North will help. Could surprise in 07’. Doubt it though.)

Penn State over Tennessee Wisconsin over Arkansas Florida over Ohio State
Am I missing anymore BIG 10/SEC head to head matchups? If not, that makes the BIG 10 2 and 1 against the SEC in this years bowl games. By the way, your southern football will never dominate as long as we have the northern states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Rich traditions with great coaches while getting an unbeatable education. If you dont believe me check out the College and NFL Halls of Fame. Dont get too cocky because of one national championship.

Scooter 11, lay down the crack pipe and step away from the keyboard. Yes, Tech lost Calvin to the pros, but 4 out of 5 returning O lineman, all 3 running backs and James Johnson returning-please explain how we’re losing “all our front-line guys”. The only depth we’re losing is at tight end and the best player at the position on the team is coming back from injury. Calvin was a once-in-a-lifetime talent but so was Reggie Ball. Add up Tech’s offensive weapons and I’ll take next year’s squad. And please, save the “one game doesn’t make a QB” crap about Bennett. Anyone with one working eye could tell after watching Tech’s last three games that Bennett will be a dramatic improvement over Ball.
Also, please explain to me exactly how “over-hyped” John Tenuta and our defense is. After all the carping and whining from dog fans about your long-lost D coordinator, you’d give your left jewel to have Tenuta. Our starting D had two shaky games this season and 12 where they would have won if the O held up their end of the bargain.

Jason, I hate telling you this over and over but you don’t get it do you? You try and boast about the two Big 10 wins over the SEC in which one Big 10 team was favored and the other was pretty even in the match up. Anyone who watched the games knows how close they were and which teams looked better on the field. You got 2 3 point wins. Yet your “best” team in OSU got the living crap beat out of them and showed they didn’t even deserve to be on the field by the best team in the SEC. The Big 10 went 2-5 in bowl games and showed just how pathetic and overrated they are. The Big 10, even with OSU, Mich, and Wisc, was rated the 5th best conference in the country. And just so you can get your facts straight, the SEC has won 3 of the last 9 national championships. It isn’t just one season. Let’s not forget the SEC has the best BCS record of all time at 8-4.
With the rest of the ineptitude of the Big 10 and the pathetic weaknesses of even your best teams, thank goodness for those 3 point wins by Wisc and PSU right?

Last time I checked thats a TEN POINT difference. Not a THREE POINT difference.
And to VB. I have BOISE STATE 24th. They had a great year in 06. I cant deny that. But they lose their Quarterback who pretty much carried them all season in weak conference play. Their toughest game was Utah, until they’re lucky win vs. Oklahoma. I root for cinderella teams, but next year a top 25 for them will be tough. Maybe my head is up my a*s, but one win over an overrated Oklahoma team in a BCS game doesnt mean they can play with the big dogs year in and year out. Jeremy, you can agree w me there.

I don’t think OU warrants a preseason #3 ranking. Top ten at best. However, people are forgetting about a redshirt freshman RB named DeMarco Murray, the no.1 recruit in 2005. If the sooners have a QB that can manage the offense, the rest will take care of itself. I see a one or two loss season at best.

Where did “Mr. I know Noting about College Football” rank Kentucky and Vanderbilt? That is about where Ohio State and Michigan should be ranked. Any of the SEC’s top 6 to 8 teams would have beat the Michigan and Ohio State teams that took the field in the bowl games. They played weak schedules in a weak conference and and got slapped around by superior teams from strong conferences. We would have never known how bad they were had there been an Ohio State vs. Michigan rematch.

If I worked for ESPN I would still be working on my list of excuses for why Ohio State lost the game (I think Corso is still crying). I think that in the future we should just call the SEC Championship game the National Title game or maybe the SEC and Pac 10 Champs could meet and play for the National Title. Okay, I know you get a million of these after you release your preliminary rankings … and I know we are 8 months from next season, but I am curious as to your methodology of ranking Georgia 16th and the Hokies (whom Georgia beat in the Peach …er, Chickfila Bowl) nine spots ahead at number 10? Georgia ended the season with three straight victories over ranked opponents (#5 Auburn, #14 GT, and #11 VT). I understand noting that the defense will be at a disadvantage, but folks were saying the same thing when Pollack, Thurman, and Blue left. This is a defense that always bounces back well from the draft. On the offensive side of the ball, we saw a confident, smarter Matt Stafford and a receiving corp that managed to finally get the butter off of their hands. Stafford will only improve - after watching his composure during the down time and seeing how he responded to the pressure of the game and of the fans (UGA fans are obnoxiously bandwagoners) he showed that he is a QB on the way up. VT, on the other hand, continually disappoints and underachieves (much like our maligned Yellow Jackests in Atlanta). So, anyway, what gives. You don’t believe that a team who went out on a three-game win streak against top-15 teams is going to be better than 16th next season? Really?

Hi, SEC football fans We all know that the SEC is far and away more enjoyable to watch than the Big 10. The Big 10 is big, boring and slow. The SEC puts the emphasis on speed and you could easily see that in the championship game. Ohio State looked like they had 10-lb weights on their feet. I actually felt sorry for them. SEC is the most exciting conference in the country. Any feedback out there?

I felt so bad for Penn State and Wisconsin. UT and ARK. were really exciting and their speed was so unbelivable. Top notch competition. You should totally work for ESPN or ABC Sports with your stellar observations.

TCU will not need to break in a new tailback. Aaron Brown will only be a junior in 2007 and he was last seasons team leading rusher averaging 5.2 yards per carry with 9 touchdowns and 801 yards on the season. The only question will be at quarterback where Marcus Jackson will probably step in and feel the shoes of departing senior Jeff Ballard. Jackson had 44 snaps throughout the season seeing playing time when Ballard got injured or when TCU had large leads. Jackson lead TCU to a come behind victory in the first game of the 2006 season when Jeff Ballard got injured just before half. Jackson came in with TCU trailing 7-0 and lead the team to a 17-7 victory passing for 148 yards and 2 touchdowns. The defense which ranked 2nd in the nation last season will return 9 starters and should be one of the top defenses in the nation once again in 2007. You all need to do your homework before projecting this stuff. I know you are all from SEC and ACC territory, but seriously you need to respect TCU a little more than 23. This team has put together four 10 or more win season in the last five seasons.
