Fearlessly forecasting an unpredictable season

I could be wrong. I often am. But based on last week’s games, I think this is going to one of the most unpredictable college football seasons we have had. To that end, we will start a new tradition today with our first Fearless Friday Forecast.

  1. After fretting about the trip to Columbia all summer, Georgia will win comfortably at South Carolina. The Ball Coach is doing everything he can to compensate for an offensive line that is struggling. Blake Mitchell, meet Quentin Moses and Charles Johnson. By late Saturday night you’ll be well acquainted.

  2. Clemson suffered a real blow when linebacker Anthony Waters was lost for the season but the Tigers will still win at Boston College. BC will try to play smash mouth like they did last season when the Eagles won at Clemson and it will work for a half. Clemson has too many weapons and will win on a late field goal.

  3. As regular season games go it just doesn’t get any better than No. 1 Ohio State going to No. 2 Texas. The Buckeyes are good but their defense gave up almost 300 yards of total offense to Northern Illinois running back Garrett Wolfe. Look for the Longhorns to run the ball and keep Troy Smith and the Ohio State offense off the field. Let’s call it Texas 24, Ohio State 21.

  4. Who is pulling hardest for California today when they host Minnesota? That would be Tennessee, which just stomped the Golden Bears last Saturday in Knoxville. A win over a solid Big Ten team by Cal would further validate Tennessee’s victory and set the table for next week’s showdown with Florida. California is not the No. 9 team in the nation but the Bears are good and will beat Minnesota.

  5. In beating Memphis last Sunday, Ole Miss showed that it is going to have some offensive firepower and will not be a walkover for the rest of the SEC. Ed Orgeron has given the Rebels a big dose of attitude and they will show it again on Saturday when they go on the road and beat Missouri.

Tony, I agree that UGA will roll over SC. I wasn’t impressed with their win over MSU. The game was a lot closer than it looked and SC needed a trick play to pull it out. UGA didn’t look great, but they played 70 players in the first half of the game against WKU.

I am not sold on Ainge yet. Two of his TD passes could have been picked off by quicker DBs. He did have one nice long TD pass, but they knew that Cal was running two deep since they stole the defensive play calls. UT is improved, but I don’t think they are proven yet.

I like Georgia over South Carolina for precisely the reason you mentioned. Georgia’s defense matches up well with South Carolina’s offense. If South Carolina can establish the running game they have a chance, but I don’t think they will be able to do it.

Georgia’s special teams should also have an advantage. I anticipate we will block one of Succop’s punts. I also anticipate Georgia will create other defensive turnovers.

I agree with the Dawgs-SC call as well. We’re not going to put up a bunch of points, but Moses and Johnson packed plushy lawn chairs so they’ll be more comfortable in the backfield. Blake Mitchell is going to be sore on Sunday morning.

They’ll be ready for a game this year and get a cakewalk.

I agree the Dawgs will win if;

We don’t hear Larry howl “NOOO Blocking” and “DROPPED” over 3 times each.

And we will surely win if we see “The Ole Ball Coach whirl his visor to the ground over 3 times”!! LOL

I personally don’t have a problem with an experienced/mature JT3 taking some snaps until MS get deeper into the play book. MR has to have a very good idea how many plays MS has in him and should play him accordingly! Dawgs roll over USC!

To Mike Coker - I’m a UGA fan but try and be objective as possible - guess I get the pessimism from Dooley and Munson. As the ‘ol coach says, “To get some a*, you got to bring some a*.” South Carolina has very little to bring this year. They will fight hard, but lose in the second half - Dawgs by two touchdowns.

Mikey Henderson has learned not to throw the ball away before you cross the goal line, but he got injured in the process. All of the UGA shifting around on receivers makes me nervous. Last weeks game really proves nothing since we played nobody.

This is not last year’s UGA or SC and I don’t know if you can really call the line on this game. You have to give the old ball coach something for playing it in SC.

I see a low scoring affair since neither team has an offense to speak of. It’ll probably come down to a field goal. I’m gonna make an optimistic call.

I agree UGA will win. However, we always seem to have problems in SC. This year will most likely be no different. The difference is that the DAWGs defense is much better than SC’s. I am fairly certain that both sides have a lot more in their playbook than they showed last week. UGA will win this one for the one and only ERK RUSSELL.

Dawgs will lose a close one. Gamecocks have had this game circled and will be ready. Columbia will ROCK!!!!!!

Spurrier played it close against Miss. State - but will open up against GA.

Look for a lot of quick passing out of backfield, more screens, more vertical attacks and will open up the run to keep Georgia honest.

Georgia’s Defense will be tough. But the offense will struggle. South Carolina’s Defense will also be tough - but I give our offense the edge with Spurrier making it happen.

Georgia is down this year at QB. WR position has a bad case of the drops and because it has received so much press, it is in their minds and now a self fulfilling prophecy that passes will be dropped! O-Line issues negate your running backs.

SC will put 8 to 9 in the box and force the pass. JT3 does not have the arm strength for a strong vertical attack. Mid range passes wobble and slow. You guys are in trouble.

Cocks pull the upset thanks to passing game and better defense. Spurrier Strikes again!!!!

LOL…fighting “Chicken.” Spurrier played it close eh..? Well he played it soooo close that he neede a trick play just to score a touchdown! Is he a genius…YES. Is he at Fla. anymore….? NO! Last time I checked Cackalacki struggled against one of the worst teams in the SEC Unless Jevon Kearse or Danny Weurful are playing Saturday it will take more than hoping Spurrier can will a win! Funny how you yardbirds seem to think Spurrier standing on the sidelines means a win. Maybe with Fla.’s talent, but not at cellar dweller South Carolina.

A team that had to pull out a double reverse pass for its only score against one of the worst defensive teams in the country will put up 24 against one of the best?

I echo Mr. Barnhart’s sentiments, Mitchell will have quite a time being introduced to the top pair of DE’s in the country.

If its close USC might win it, but hell will still be hot on Saturday and the Dawgs will roll 27-10.

Hey Gamecockgray…Was Mithell getting blindsided allnight psrt of the gamelplan? Or how bout those stitches it took to close up the gash in Mitchell’s leg? Or how about that nonexistant running game? Boy o boy if that is Spurrier holding back and my son was Blake Mitchell, I’d have a word or to with the Old Ball Coach! Holding back? Why that might be the funniest post I’ve ever read here! And I’m certain that the OL getting the crap beat out of them by the saddest team to ever be fielded in the SEC, was part of the line coaches idea to let B.M.take a brutal beating! holding back. Spurrier, Spurrier, Spurrier. All we ever hear is about Spurrier. What about Carolina? Are they 12-2 against Georgia? Not quite. The only relevant figure from a record standpoint is 0-1, Stevie’s record against Georgia at USC. If you follow the “12-2” logic (i.e. Spurrier under any circumstance, irrespective of venue), you’d have to include his 1-3 record against Georgia as a player, making his overall record 5-13. And, don’t forget, he was an assistant coach for a while; maybe we should include those numbers, too.

The game is at Columbia and at night, which means the stadium will be filled with many screaming drunk people. That is the most accurate prediction anyone can make about this game. You can also predict that Spurrier will try a few trick plays, because he has to. The ‘Cocks cannot line up toe-to-toe with the “Dawgs and win. There is a personnel deficit there that is too large to make up. However, if the Dawgs turn it over, if one or two of those trick plays works (and works big), and if the Georgia defense does not play up to expectations, the Gamecocks can win. That’s a lot of “ifs,” but it could happen. It will NOT be a blowout win by SC (i.e. the ridiculous 24-10 score posted earlier). In the Mark Richt era at Georgia, only two teams—LSU in 2003 and Auburn in 2004—have blown out the Dawgs. The first team was a 12-1 National Champion. The second was a 13-0 team that was the best Auburn team ever. South Carolina is not in the same league with these teams, and it takes a team of that caliber to blow out a mark Richt team. If Carolina wins, it will be close. If Georgia wins, it will probably be close (largely because of the thousands of screaming drunk people mentioned earlier). If it is a blowout, it will be because the Georgia offensive linemen figured out how to run block (a potentially devastating outcome for the Gamecocks, given the strength of Georgia’s backfield)or because Matt Stafford sees early action and lights up the Gamecock secondary. A blowout by the ‘Cocks just isn’t going to happen.

Should be a good game.

I hope it’s a boring rout.

Same song every year for C** fans. SOS has got a plan for the Dawgs, bla, bla, bla, and then another loss for the birds. By the way Gary, dogs have tails not tales. Dawgs will roll. A friend of mine is a big Gator booster, and had Spurrier in his box at the game last week, and Spurrier told him that “his team sucks”, and he thinks that they will lose this week. When the ol ball coach says his team sucks we might as well belive him. GO DAWGS!

The problem is that our Dawgs don’t usually perform so well in Columbia. How many times have we made the trip to Columbia with a much better squad only to win by a UGA hair.

Hopefully all the drops from last weekend will force our wide outs and tight ends to focus on making the damn catch.

Defense will be the key to this one. DBs and LBs will be tested early and often.

For the traveling Dawg fans, watch your back in Columbia. That town smell funny and if your not careful Colubmia’s finest will throw your buns in the jail cells under their gross stadium.

Dawgs pull out a close one with D adn special teams.

NO BRAINER Gamecockgary?

That’s funny. I certainly agree anybody picking chicken would qualify.

Delusional optimism indeed.

We’ll have to see what happens. I don’t like to talk a lot of trash before the game. It could be close and it could go either way. However, I think Georgia will beat the 3 point spread. I think South Carolina will have difficulty moving the ball and Georgia will get some turnovers both from pressuring the quarterback and in the kicking game.

I’d swear you would think that “Spurrier” is suiting up and getting ready to take the Dawgs on. Truth is the Dawgs are more talented and deeper. You can only take the “SPurrier” name so far. I don’t care if circled this game in his own blood, after making a pact with the Devil. He still has to trott out the same team that got beat up last week by a dreadful MSU team. Spurrier is a fine coach. But he beat Georgia with superior talent. South Carolina isn’t Florida, nor will they ever be.

They have 10 new starters on defense. Their first game was against a MSU team that didn’t crack the top 100 in offense last year and that was with Norwood.

Georgia by 7 to 10 in the first half (with the Gamecocks playing above their heads) - Georgia blows them out in the second half…

Spurrier’s 2nd recruiting class was mediocre “at best” - if the kids don’t come this coming year (rumor is that he is losing the in state recruiting war to Clemson in a big way) - he’ll walk USC just like he did the Redskins…

Sorry USC, I admire your loyalty, but your blinded by the ‘smoke and mirrors’ of last year. You have UGA, Auburn and UT and Florida with the last two looking for payback… Enjoy those ‘non-conference games’… Oh, almost forgot - this is the best team Clemson has fielded in over a decade…

Funny, but it seems like the Dawgs were talking about a smackdown LAST year as payback for all those years of misery at the hands of Spurrier, and yet SOS showed up for the game with a supposedly no-talent team, and a rookie QB making only his second career start and ended up a field goal short of handing y’all your heads IN ATHENS. That game, I might remind you, featured DJ Shockley, an experienced GA offensive line, and a fair number of other Bulldogs now playing on Sunday. I have no idea how the game will shake out this year, but it will likely be the same as always- hard hitting and very close. I’m still wondering how you UGA fans think that you are going to win with superior talent, since it is either on the bench or suspended for the game?

Apparently, you did not know that you had only 4-5 OL on scholarship and that most of our D went pro or graduated. But if you call that superior talent, then so be it.

This game will be fun to watch and it’s going to be even more fun riding back into Atlanta after to the game with a W over the puppies.

Don’t set yourself up for disappointment, like last year’s bowl game, dogs.

A team that won with “inferior talent” and mostly freshmen and soph. In my opinion, that was the best bowl game of the entire bowl season and you all talked trash like you are right now.

Hey, GAY.ND.FAN, what’re you doing here? I have a new pastime; It’s waiting to read the posts until Sunday AM. All the blathering by SC fans is SO much funnier afetr a shutout at home. Oh boy, tears of laughter, folks.

Hey physicsDawg,

Stick to physics. I’m certain you excell much better at that. If all you can muster is a homosexual slant on another person’s moniker, then please inquire as to what a Notre Dame fan is doing posting on this blog.

Let’s see…

Ohio State? Texas? Even with the massive amount of starters, did anyone really think Texas would pull it out? I know Corso did—(of course, Corso also called for a Penn State upset of Notre Dame. Tsk. I’m certain he’ll also call this Saturday for an upset from Michigan as well)as well as Barnhart, but did you really think for a minute that Colt McCoy was the next incarnation of Vince Young?

Georgia played someone, and even though I’m not a huge fan of the SEC, I can certainly respect it. The Ol’ Ball Coach has had it coming for many years, and I’m glad that the steel toe was out for the Dawgs. Stafford will get better. Give him time.

When does Auburn actually play someone this season? Someone update me on this game, so I can see if Auburn is the real deal or not. Small children with third stage emphysema could run over these teams they’ve been playing.

I believe that’s all…

God bless and keep Irish football.
