Answers on the way

Questions, questions, we have questions. Here are our five biggest questions going into the first weekend of play.

1) What will happen if Tennessee loses to California? If the Vols beat the No. 9 Bears it will send the signal to the Volunteer Nation that the 5-6 nightmare of 2005 is officially over. But if Tennessee loses, it will be two weeks until Florida comes to Knoxville. How difficult will those weeks be for Phillip Fulmer and his staff?

2) Will Matthew Stafford get on the field against Western Kentucky? And if he doesn’t, what does that mean? Does it mean he might be red-shirted? And if that happens, will part of the Bulldog Nation go absolutely bonkers?

3) Can Arkansas keep it respectable? USC might have lost Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart but trust me, the Trojan dynasty ain’t over. USC is still loaded. The Hogs would have a much better chance of keeping it close if running back Darren McFadden had not chosen to kick somebody in the head at 4 o’clock in the morning and injured a toe. He might play but how effective can he be if he hasn’t practiced? But I digress. Coach Houston Nutt said that there is more excitement around this home game than any one he can remember. I say the Hogs play tough. They don’t win, but they play tough.

4) Can the Georgia Tech defense force three turnovers? If they can, then Notre Dame’s hopes of a national championship may be dealt an early blow Saturday night on The Flats. Defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta will show Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn some things he hasn’t seen. The question is, what will happen when Charlie Weis makes his halftime adjustments? If Georgia Tech is plus-three or more in turnovers, it wins.

5) What will be the weekend’s biggest upset? Barring a Tech victory over Notre Dame, we’re going with Baylor over TCU. TCU went 11-1 last season and has hopes of going to a BCS bowl. But Guy Morriss has given Baylor a new attitude and has the Bears on the verge of finally being competitive in the Big 12.

My favorite part is that Mr. College Football thinks that Tech needs +3 or more turnover margin to win this game. This is your hometown paper, Tech fans…do you still think Notre Dame is so overrated that you need to hope for such a lopsided turnover margin as the only way to have a shot?

Irish Jim,

You’re right. Tech should go ahead and forfeit. We’re not worthy of being on the same field with the greatest team that ever existed in the history of the universe.

Gamecockgary:

I wouldn’t be too excited about shutting out a MSU team with a terribly inept offense. Add in that they were missing their starting QB most the game, and the horrendously conservative playcalling, and Parkview could have pitched a shutout against that team (seriously, running it up the middle on 4th and 2 from midfield in the 4th quarter when USC has all 11 men at the line? where’s the bootleg? where’s the playaction?). Glad to see your boys could finally get in the end zone in the 4th quarter on a trick play, though. We will see you next weekend, and I hope your D puts 9 men in the box against us like that because we actually have playmakers at receiver (unlike MSU, who had several drops that could have put them in/near the end zone, particularly at the end of the first half, on the backups first pass).

But, I digress:

1 - I am not a Tennessee fan at all, but I think there is no way they lose to Cal at home. Not with Cal having an inexperienced QB and the disadvantage of playing in front of 104,000 loud and crazy Vol fans. I am sure those kids from Cali have never, and likely, will never again, seen anything like that before. 2 - It’s not such a bad idea to redshirt Stafford, rather than letting him get pummelled by an inept Oline all year. Let him get his first action next year, with Thomas Brown leading the way as a senior RB and future NFL star. 3 - Arkansas will play hard, but get trounced. They lose by 3 TDs at least, though 2 of those may come late in the game to make it look a little worse than it actually was. 4 - Oh, poor Techies. You will keep it close, but lose. Just not enough talent to keep up. Plus, you’ve got that whole Reggie Ball factor. 5 - Biggest upset? UAB over Oklahoma. Stack the line and make Oklahoma’s QB look absolutely terrible; just like TCU did to them in the spanking they gave them in Week 1 last year.

It’s going to be a fun weekend of football!! I can’t wait!

I may be in a tiny minority of Georgia fans here, but for Pete’s sake, there is absolutely no point in playing Stafford this year. Redshirt him and give him a shot at four full years of being a potential hero. I just don’t see why everyone is already so prepared to throw Tereshinski under the bus.

Anyway, I gotta disagree with Tim about the Cal-Tennessee game. I’ve heard a lot out of Knoxville lately and none of it has been good, even regarding the play of Erik Ainge. Between Ainge’s erratic summer and the heavy losses the Vols incurred on defense, I don’t see UT bouncing all the way back from 5-6 embarrassment to worldbeater in one season. They’ll still win seven or eight, maybe even nine games, but Cal won’t be one of them.

You mutts are almost as arrogant as Notre Dame fans. Sure, the Gamecocks did not look so good last night, but they almost beat your puppies “between the hedges” last year with a less talented team. Considering your history with Spurrier, you might want to at least wait until you beat USC before you ridicule them and start your annual dribble about how great UGA will be this year. By the way, good luck against those mighty Hilltoppers.

Who is the MORON that said SCu’s team is more talented this year than last? Do you know anything about college football? Anything? They are NOT more talented. The defense lost 10 starters, the offense lost the line. PLEASE, I beg of you, just take a look at depth charts, graduating classes, something, anything, that will help you make more educated posts. This gets so tiring. Tech fans are absolute idiots. The only thing they can do is spew french fry and mutt jokes. So boring and trite.

Did anyone notice the names of the 2 recruits from Missouri - White and Gray. We should team them up with Brown (and it’s a shame Browning and Greene are gone).

I was hoping Sylvester Croom would do better than how things worked out last night. His offense will give him ulcers this year unless things improve. Was Sidney Rice playing last night? If South Carolina doesn’t improve in game 2 their year may go into free fall. South Carolina better guard its kicker - if he gets injured, there goes their offense.

My decision rule on which team to favor: 1. UGA, 2. SEC team (unless Florida) over non-SEC, 3. Southern team (not Gators) over Yankees, 4. Underdog team (unless Florida), 5. Will slightly favor Florida if a Gator win helps UGA. I am not applying the decision rule to ND-Tech as I don’t care about that game.

The only thing I can figure out about the c**’s offense last night was that they were trying to lure the Dawgs into being overconfident. I’m sure Spurrier will make some changes, but Quentin Moses or Charles Johnson will no doubt create key turnovers coming off the end… Can’t take anything away from the c**’s defense though… Linebackers look strong, good kicker,…. It would be nice to see the Dawgs stretch the field with a few downfield passes. Unless the Dawgs are actually pretty mediocre, the c**’s better bring a different game to Columbia next week if they want to get embarrassed..

Who cares if a freshman QB gets time to take snaps in a scrimmage with WKU. GT steps up every year and plays stiff competition in it’s first game and is not afraid to go out of CF. You’d think the SEC necks would shut-up after being drilled year in and out in bowl games and out of Cf games. 3 turnovers??? I say we win if we do not turn the ball over once. Irish Jim, don’t drink so early in the morning, it makes you say stupid things you wouldn’t if you were sober. Puppy fans just mad because they see the Tech train rolling in recruiting, and know we’re buzzing at their ears. Sounds like Stafford is a problem already, and will be enrolled elsewhere before the season is out.

The primary concern shoud be the offensive line lack of depth total of 6 OL’s for the 1st 2 games - hope there are no injuries. MR, has signed 22 OL since 02, only ll are around. Majority of the losses have been because of shoulder injuries - this is more than unusual - we are signing a number, cerainly hope they stick.

As for the qb’s-MR, is one of the best evaluatiors of talent in CF, do not bet against him. He will make the right call.

Shivas-

You nailed it again. UGA has an easy out of conference schedule (we play Tech every year, 5 wins in a row). Meanwhile, Tech has to play Samford and Troy…that is one tough schedule.

Also, Tech is done with recruiting. You only have 16 scholarships, remember? You’re on probation!!! And remember, Dwyer is the second best recruit at RB in the state. The other one hasn’t committed yet. I wonder where he will go?

SHIVAS…SEC gets drilled in Bowl games? The SEC has more bowl wins than any other conference. Tech trin rolling in recruiting? What a laugh. 4 4 star recruits doesn’t equal train rolling. UGA already has eight. You may want to try stringing together more than one decent recruiting class before bragging about signing a few players people have heard of before.

Doug:

Agree with you on Stafford. Tereshinski will do just fine (Richt won with lesser QBs at FSU), and if not, Cox will be more than ready to step up.

I say we redshirt Moreno (the RB from NJ) too. We are deep at that position already. Why waste a year for a few carries.

As for the Cal/Tenn game - I actually will pull for Tenn to win (ouch, that hurts to say that) just because of the SEC connection, and by no means do I think the game will not be extraordinarily close. I just think it will be hard for Cal to play on the road in front of that giant crowd with the losses they had from their squad of a year ago.

And you Tech fans crack me up, seriously. At least your “points” or “arguments” have already been debuffed by the time I have come to read them. Just like your former AD said, “Tech is a team that will win 6-7 games a year”. Enjoy those six-seven wins, and have fun watching the DAWGS play on New Years Day once again. When was the last time Tech did that?

Three turnovers… what decent team couldn’t win a game with a plus three turnover margin??? ND only once had three total turnovers in a game (2 fumbles, 1 Int) and their opponent in that game had two turnovers of their own.

Reaching there a bit aren’t we Tony?? By the way, ND had ZERO turnovers against that all world OSU defense in the Fiesta Bowl.

Shivas,

You are quite an idiot. As far as schedules go, we both have our share of weak OOC opponents UGA - WKy & UAB. GT has Samford and Troy. If you look back to the time when the 2006 schedules were made, Colorado was doing quite a bit better than ND. The programs have gone in different directions the last 3-4 years. As far as your comment about bowl games, the SEC has the least favorable bowl matchups of any conference (ex. Peach Bowl SEC #5 vs ACC #3), and we still have a winning bowl record almost every year. How did that 2005 Peach Bowl end up? And as far as your comment on recruiting, you must be joking. We have had a top 5 recruiting class for 4 years running. We have 17 commitments already and haven’t played a game. If you guys ever crack the top 15 in recruiting, we may take notice. Stafford is a real problem already? Thats like saying that Calvin Johnson is a real problem and will transfer because he only gets the ball twice a game. We all know that you Jackettes are jealous of UGA and thats OK. We expect to hear smack talk when you win (That would be about twice per decade). However, its hilarious when you try to put down our program when we have OWNED you for the past 12 years or so. We are your daddy, and you know it. Now stop talking nonsense and go to your room.

As for Georgia, don’t waste ink. They schedule somebody like Western Kentucky and call it a game? Outside of slugs like Larry Munson and other necks, do the stats even count against schools like this?

These non-games are scheduled simply so the dozen or so criminals charged with crimes over the summer can be “suspended for the first game” as punishment. Second degree stuff gets you double secret probation.

As an Auburn fan, I know all too well that once a year or so, Reggie Ball actually plays up to hype that came with him to GT. If he does so Saturday, and Quinn has some sort of Heisman jinx meltdown, Tech has a chance. Otherwise, they’re not sneaking up on anybody…every “prognosticator” online has selected them as an upset special, just giving ND plenty of incentive to wax the bees.

Without McFadden, Arkansas doesn’t have a prayer. If they keep it within 20 I’ll be surprised. Carroll would love to show people that USC isn’t dead yet.

If I had any faith whatsoever in the Tennessee offense, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt.

That’s it — Put a brave face on it. You sure put a number over on the mighty Miss. State team. Sidney Rice had nothing. Running game had nothing. Your defense managed to shut down a second string QB (freshman, right?) who wasn’t planning on playing. One miracle gadget play somehow managed to score the only TD. All of that just like your brilliant coach drew it up before the game, right. Go down to the South Carolina Wal-Mart and buy some offensive linemen. If Wal-Mart is sold out, you’d better get about a dozen caskets instead. You’d better stock up on Depends too; you’re going to need them.

South Carolina fans need to memorize the TWO DON’TS: 1. Donnan and Goff don’t work here anymore. 2. Don’t think Spurrier has the old Florida’s talent level.

Here come the Irish! Charlie will toy with Tenuta’s defense for a quarter, then destroy it. Something like Sherman v. Johnston, circa 1864. ND 38- GT 17. By the way Rudy was not offside. I was there.

By ND41GT17

September 2, 2006 03:52 PM | Link to this

I think there’s a chance GT can win this game; however, an honest analysis of the facts suggests otherwise.

ND averaged 36 points a game last year; GT averaged about 18. GT allowed an average 20 points per game, while ND allowed 24.

Let’s compare players instead of just saying the Notre Dame’s consensus All American sucks next to the mighty CJ:

QB’s Brady Quinn: 64.9% comp, 3919 yds, 32 TDs, 7 Ints Reggie Ball: 47.9% comp, 2165 yds, 11 TDs. 12 Ints

RB’s Darius Walker, 1196 yds rushing, 351 yds rec., 11 TDs

WR’s Jeff S: 77 rec. , 1278 Yds, 15 TD’s CJ the Great: 54 rec, 888 yds, 6 TD’s

Comparing these two offenses is like comparing the Army with the Boy Scouts (with GT being the latter). Sorry folks, if GT wins this game, it’s because either ND forfeits or Bob Davie trades places with Weis and coaches ND while Weis does the play-by-play in the booth. It’s not going to happen.

And for the record, Rudy was not off-sides. But, even if he was, it was 24-3 sweetheart.

ND41GT17… hey man…congrats on the win the other day, but honestly, an “honest look at the stats” really doesn’t say very much. putting up 36 points a game is a little misleading with the schedule you guys had last year. I’m no Techie, in fact, I’m a Dawg, but the stats really don’t say anything. They just say how badly you beat navy and Northwest Illinois State Community College.
