Delays on I-85 North

Motorists should expect delays on I-85 north in Gwinnett County Thursday as crews repair parts of the road that were damaged in a fiery wreck on Wednesday.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said it plans to close one of two northbound lanes of I-85 near Buford until about 2 p.m.

“Crews will be removing damaged asphalt and replacing it with new asphalt,” DOT spokesman Teri Pope said.

A pickup hit a tractor-trailer on the roadway about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. Both vehicles burst into flames, and heat from the fire melted some asphalt, the transportation department said.

Authorities advised motorists to avoid the area if possible.

Pilot makes emergency landing at Tara Field

The pilot of a small single-engine plane burned off fuel over Tara Field Friday afternoon before making a successful emergency landing, officials said.

Clayton County Transportation Director Wayne Patterson said the front wheels of a Piper Saratoga four-seater jammed, forcing the emergency landing. Patterson said only the pilot, who was not identified, was on board.

“The plane landed without incident, no injuries,” Patterson said.

Firefighters and rescue personnel with Henry and Clayton counties were standing by in case the landing proved eventful, Clayton police Deputy Chief Tim Robinson said.

Tara Field is in Hampton, just west of the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
