Utility pole falls on portable classroom

A portable classroom at Mableton Elementary School was damaged Monday morning when a utility pole crashed onto it.

There was no one in the classroom at the time and there were no injuries, said Jay Dillon, a spokesman for the Cobb County School District.

The accident happened just before 11 a.m. when a food service truck, which had just made a delivery to the school, went the wrong way in the school driveway, Dillon said.

The truck clipped the wires on the utility pole, which sent it crashing onto the classroom.

The children were at lunch at the time, Dillon said.

“The portable classroom was damaged pretty heavily,” Dillon said.

The school is at 5520 Church Street in Mableton.

Power outage closes Ponce in Decatur

A power outage has closed several blocks of Ponce de Leon Avenue in downtown Decatur.

Georgia Power is working on restoring power to traffic signals. A city official said an underground cable is being repaired, and the lights may not be working properly until late tonight, if then.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Until power is restored, all traffic will be routed around the affected area onto Commerce Drive except for local residential traffic.
