What will you miss most about Skip?

There’s a pit in my stomach every time I hear Skip Caray’s voice. And the last “So long, everybody,” brings tears to my eyes.

The AJC’s writers (Dave O’Brien, Mark Bradley, Furman Bisher and even Mike Luckovich) have done more justice to him than I possibly could, but I have to honor Skip with this fan’s perspective.

A summer presence since my childhood, Skip made the Braves’ bad times enjoyable and the good times even better. His call of Sid’s slide and the final out of the ‘95 World Series will always be with me, but more important are the many, many times he made me laugh out loud during games that otherwise would have been tough to watch.

After his removal from TV broadcasts, I found myself listening to more games on the kitchen radio, Skip’s and Pete’s voices filling up the room while I puttered around.

And this season, after so many years in contention, the Braves’ struggles brought back the Skip I remember from the 1970s and ’80s — the guy who said exactly what we fans were thinking, only funnier.

The pre-game show on the radio last night was full of wonderful memories and heartfelt thoughts, and Jon Sciambi and Joe Simpson did a great job of honoring his memory during the TV broadcast. They reminded me of all the things I’ll miss: knowing the hometown of each fan who catches a foul ball; the not-so-subtle digs at the umpire, official scorer or network that most recently had ticked him (and usually the fans, too) off; the ridiculing of promos or disclaimers he found useless.

Most of all, though, I’ll miss his perspective of the game and waiting for him to say the next thing that was going to make me laugh. There were countless times that he sent me running to find my husband elsewhere in the house so I could share with him what Skip had just said.

Skip Caray was many things, but what stands out to me most is that he was a fan, just like the rest of us. Braves games won’t ever be the same again.

I am not an Atlanta Braves fan, but I use to watch TBS when the Braves were on in the hope that Skip Caray would do the Broadcast. He was simply one of the best I have ever heard. I and 64 years old and I would rank him in the top three! He could be number one!

I was upset when I learned the Braves were no longer on TBS and I am really upset at Skips passing.

God Bless Skip Caray

God Bless him and his family

I’ve missed talking to him on road trips the past couple of seasons - and now all those times he snagged me with a joke without me even knowing it until I was completely suckered mean all the more to me….
It is a complete honor to have known him and a great pleasure to have had the opportunity to chat about baseball and to be suckered in by his great sense of humor….even if the joke was on me most of the time!

Would have loved to ask him to explain the In-Field Fly rule and await the abuse!

That always brought me a chuckle when some unsuspecting fan would ask. I also echoed his utter disdain for the wave in the ballparks.

My kids have grown up outside of Atlanta but they now echo me often as we proclaim “Braves win, Braves win, Braves win, Braves win … Braves win”

Most of all, we felt like Skip was letting us in on some inside information when he told it like it was. He never sugar coated the truth about an awful play, a less-than-stellar trade, or a stupid comment. He always made fans feel like they were in on the secrets of baseball—-and his comments about life and the culture around us, would keep us tuning in for more. The greatest tragedy in the world is that he did not receive the recognition he deserved-by TBS or by the Hall of Fame.

I will most miss his biting sarcasm and tell-it-like-it-is honesty in an era of emasculated announcers and political correctness. Skip will be truly missed.

FYI…I was at the game in ‘77 when Larry McWilliams and Gene Garber combined to stop Pete Rose’s hitting streak. “Two balls, two strikes, two outs. It’s gonna come down to one final pitch…”

I remember that call like it was yesterday. :(

I cannot explain how sad I am that Skip is gone. His wit was hilarious. I will miss his ability? to know where a person lived just by catching a foul ball. It took this blond awhile to “get the joke”. He was sarcastic and wonderful. I got his autograph on a hot, Sunday afternoon 2 yrs ago when the Braves and Chuck James got slaughtered by the “melts”. I will treasure it forever. Thank you Skip. Just like Luckovich said today……..where are you? High and inside!!!!!!

I am 38 years old and a life long Braves fan. I grew up with Murph, and Horner and Hubbard and Niekro and Benedict. And Skip and Pete. My heart has been hurting since Skips passing. This man provided the soundtrack to my summers. There was none better. Growing up in the south being a Braves fan was almost a birth rite and Mr. Caray talked us through some horrible years all the way to the pinnacle. Braves games will never be the same, but I’ll never watch or listen to one without thinking of Skip. God speed skip. And God bless your family.

I’ll miss everything about Skip! I’m also one of those who would turn on the radio to hear “our” announcers — especially if the game was on “national TV” with network announcers. I never met Skip or any of the other broadcasters, but I’ve spent countless hours with them over the years (since 1984), and it makes you feel like you know them personally. It was tough to watch/listen to the announcers last night (for a couple of hours, anyway), but it was also very nice to hear how much he meant to his co-workers and the Braves.

One thing I’ll always remember is from long ago when TBS showed utter junk after the games. Skip spent many innings mocking the movie “Squirm” that was going to be on TBS after the game. Apparently in an attempt to placate his bosses a little by encouraging people to watch that “film” (a generous term for it!), Skip offered a contest: a free autographed-by-the-Braves baseball for the best review of “Squirm.” My brother and I didn’t want to stay up for the movie, but we taped it. After we endured the ENTIRE “Squirm” (no cheating!) the next day, we both wrote and sent in reviews. Neither of us won, but it created a nice memory for my brother and me.

And I’ll always think of Skip’s “fans battle for the souvenir” whenever a foul ball enters the stands. (In addition to wondering about the victor’s hometown.)

Skip, you were a legend, and we’ll really, really miss you! You’re a Hall of Famer in my book.

I’ll never forget going to bed while the game was in rain delay and then waking up around 3 am turning on the tube to check the final score and the game was on live! Skip was at his hilarious best, calling the game impeccably, but with such wit. I wish I had recorded that game.

I remember watching a game at Fulton County Stadium, listening to the broadcast with my headset, as Skip and Joe were tracking an approaching rainstorm which threatened to shorten a Braves win in progress. Joe said, “I once heard that if the cows are lying in the field, it means it won’t rain.” After a brief pause, Skip replied, “So…were the cows lying in the field or standing as you drove to the game tonight?”

Here’s another. There was a Hooter’s sign on the right field fence. A player hit a drive down the right field line. Skip says, “There’s a drive down the right field line, but Pete, you’ll have to tell me if it went fair or foul. I lost it in the Hooter’s sign.” About ten minutes later, out of the clear blue, Skip says, “Ya know? I still can’t take my eyes off that Hooter’s sign.”

I feel like I lost a member of my family. God bless Skip Carey.

i will miss the on-air antics and inside jokes: the bird noises in the background when Paul Byrd was pitching, other play-on-words with various players names (recently Gotay (1 on), Resop, etc.), the ridiculously fast reading of the ad spots as early in the game as possible, the misread ad spots (Bulova flies, time soars), the total abuse of stupid callers during the rain delays, the rants against the DOT, MARTA, MLB, etc. i could go on … HE WILL BE MORE THAN MISSED!

Being from New Orleans we never had a baseball team so in 77 it was nice to have cable and I think I have watched nearly every game since then and his voice was one of a kind and never had I ever heard an announcer that could go from the game to a mudane add and back again and just crack me up. I hope the Braves organization never forgets him.

By the way Skip deserves to be in the Hall of Fame for all those who care about baseball.

Like you, I found myself trying to listen more to Pete and Skip on the radio after last season. I am sure Jon Sciambi is a great guy, but I grew up with Skip, Ernie Johnson, Pete, Don, John Sterling (remember, him?), and later Joe and Chip.

Skip seemed like he could have been any of us calling the game, except he was a professional. He agonized when the Braves were bad, and they were bad for much of the late 1970s and 1980s. His irreverance always kept me entertained, even when the baseball on the field was not good. He said what I wanted to say. I must say, his dad was that way too. I quit watching the Cubs after Harry passed. Missed hearing him say, “boy oh boy!” when the Cubs stunk it up. I’ll miss two things most of all. I will miss him saying “the bases are loaded, and I wish I was too.” And, I will miss him identifying the “fan from Naugasauga, Knoxville, Birmingham, or wherever catching the soverneir in the stands.” Someday, it will be nice to hear, “a fan from the third heaven caught that one.”

Some thoughts after coming back partially sobered up from celebrating a personal three day wake for SKIP CAREY.

I loved the way he stuck pins into DON SUTTON’s bag of pompous air. Now I have no choice but to listen to the “mouth of the south” prattle on about the vagaries of the Washington Nationals. Oh, I do exercise one option. I rarely listen.

Unfortunately, SKIP will never again be there to leaven the mirthless hyperbole with some much needed humor.

I have a friend who loves Sutton, and hated SKIP’s inimitable style. We’ve never been as close since I learned that particular fact about his taste in broadcasters. Not one to goad others, I lack CAREY’s delight in exposing unimaginative thinking. Consequently, we remain friends.

That’s what I will miss. That quick, rapier wit that NO other national broadcaster possessed. And “free baseball” will forever be in my lexicon of favorite terms. Good-bye to my friend. Someone I never met, but loved fondly.

I will remember the combination of “love” for the team, and the “irreverance” which must surround the team - assuming as Skip and I - went about our business of announcer/listener with our God basically indifferent, but very slightly favoring the Braves - us being a very old club with lots of history and reasons to root. (God having, as he does, a pretty good sense of historical W-L, BA, total RBI, and a whole bunch of other numbers to impress our Creator. He, was, however, not impressed with RISP and late come-from-behind and other the other numbers that the Creator of the Universe would naturally aspire to. He had in mind the team BA from 1876-1884, and expected better.

Anyhow, our Creator gave Skip a treasured, sun-lit spot, with a well-manicured infield, a golden microphone, a game-winning hit, a Latin Mass, a Protestant work ethic, and a univeral, humanistic WAVE, which continues to go ‘round our stadium. Skip says stop this, now, and God bless you!

One of my favorite lines from him was ” The Braves were playing in San Francisco and Dale Murphys grandfather was at the game. Skip kept saying ok Dale hit one out for your grandfather. What will I miss about Skip? His brutal honesty. I don’t want someone trying to gloss over things, when in fact, things are going terribly wrong. Skip never glossed over anything.

I will also miss the way he made me laugh. I would listen to games as I would often run in my subdivision, and I would wonder how crazy people thought I was as I would burst into laughter outloud while running past them with my headphones on. It was always Skip cracking some joke to make me laugh.

I will forever think of Skip when:

I see the Wave

On Bark in the Park Days

When I sit in traffic caused by the DOT after a game

Whenever a ball goes into the crowd and Skip is not around to inform me where the fan lives who caught it

When I hear Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O”, I used to hear him gripe about that one too.

Braves Baseball will never be the same.

He will forever be missed by this fan from Flowery Branch GA

Fond memories: I remember the night we got McGriff and the broadcast booth got moved out into the terrace level and Skip was just relaxing out in a regular stadium seat talking to us about it. Then, when a foul ball went into the section where the firemen were standing and one of them got the ball and Skip said they deserved to get it.

Ribbing Don about his favorite song “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”

I was on my bed covering my face with the pillow and only heard the Sid slide call because I was too scared to watch. There was no doubt about what happened from the radio!

I HATED the Fox announcers during the playoffs and world series games so I ALWAYS listened to Skip and the guys for how the game was REALLY going.

You were THE BEST - I will miss you - the games won’t be quite the same for me - Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for being part of my family at least 162 days a year for 33 years.

God bless your family as they learn to live without you 365 days a year.

This is for “Doug” regarding the Rose hitting streak.

How about this?

I was 12 years old living in southern Indiana. This is the heart of Big Red Machine country at that time. EVERYBODY was pulling for Rose - except me.

For anyone who listened to Braves games on the radio in the 70’s in Southern Indiana it was an adventure to say the least. I doubt there were many. On some nights - I could listen on the radio in my bedroom. On other nights - I had to take the radio outside - other nights I had to walk up the street until I found a good spot.

On the night Garber ended Rose’s hitting streak, I was actually listening on the radio in my dad’s car in our driveway. Crazy - but you do what you have to do. Man that was great!

Rose stated, “He acted like he won the World Series.”

Skip, Ernie and Pete are the best.

In the middle 70’s Skip announced Hawks games. The Hawks were winning and their short guard, Charlie Crist, was having a great game on offense and hustling on defense. After he fell to the ground and made yet another steal, Skip said ” Charlie’s spent more time on the floor than a mop”. He was my favorite.

I’ll always remember Skip’s funny comments about the movies that would follow the Braves games on TBS and how he and Pete Van Wieren would chuckle about them, but I’ll never forget the stories he told during his long career about the famous and no so famous ballplayers that crossed his path. TBS did a great disservice when they cut back on his television time last year. I missed those anecdotes and it was never the same. Take care, Skip.

I didn’t know Skip personally but he was a part of our family. When someone is in your home 162 days a year you learn to appreciate all his wonderful characteristics. My favorite Skipism is when he would compare the lenght of a ballgame to “I had marriages that didn’t last this long”. His humor will not soon be forgotten.

I remember when we first received cable in Tucson I was estatic as a Brave fan since 1959. Wow TBS and all those Brave games… I soon learned how good a Broadcaster Skip Carey was and his humor was at times sarcastic & dry, yet it was always honest.Didn’t matter who you were or who you played for…he told it just like it was.I liked the fact he didn’t try to wow you with a million useless stats during a game and helped you enjoy the game itself. Alot of todays announcers could be well served to listen to some tapes of games Skip called. I remember when Skip said his byes on the last Brave game carried by TBS. He actually was telling us he was sorry and would mis us…… It’s now our turn to say we will mis you even more Mr. Carey. Gods Speed and my deepest simpathy to his Family. Thanks for makeing my life better Skip.

Hi Chick!

The things I will miss about Skip would be his honesty about the team, win or lose, his disdain for ESPN, Fox and GDOT and his sarcasm.

I’ve spent many summer evenings watching the Braves on TBS or listening to Skip on the radio. I can’t believe he’s gone. Having to watch the games on Sportsouth is bad enough; not having Skip around anymore to call the game is the worst. God bless you, Skip, you’ll be missed.

My favorite line came from the days Skip called the Hawks. During one particularly miserable game when the Hawks were way down in the third quarter, he suddenly said:

You know…as I listen to the game today, the Braves are in San Francisco, and I LOVE LOVE Pete… but there were runners for SF going from second, then to third and rounding for home. It was sort of matter of fact… Skip would have a level of excitement that would perk my ears up and have me on the edge of my seat! I can’t recall how many balls have been hit and he is practically shouting,”A LONG DRIVE…To the WALLLLLL… and CAUGHT by so and so outfielder. Just another noisy out!” He’s the one that made it noisy for the radio listeners and it added a level of excitement that I just do NOT hear with any other broadcast team (I’m an XM baseball junkie). OH MY GOODNESS… I miss him SOOOOOOO much. I grew up with Skip….. I vote him for as the next Ford C. Frick honoree!! (Should have been while he was alive.) So Long Skip. When I get to heaven, will you call ALL my ballgames?

I knew that he really hated that stretch of I-85 bridge that you practically bounce on, on the way to the stadium. I have counted, and there are exactly 40 connections in that stretch, and it is obnoxious! HA!! Whenever the Braves were on National Broadcast for playoffs, championship games etc., I always turned OFF Tim McCarver and turned ON Skip and Pete. I would take our “homer” Skip over those “anti-Atlanta” biased goobs on the national broadcasts anyday.

His sense of humor during broadcasts is something that can’t be matched by any other broadcaster. I remember one baseball game I was listening to. Bob Walk was the pitcher for Atlanta and he was getting roughed up at the time. The batter’s last name was also named “Walk”. Skip said something close to the following…

“If Walk walks Walk we’ll be in a real mess here.”

I thought that was really funny.

He has his own unique style. Starting every home run with “There’s a drive….”

You know immediately that it is gone whenever he says that.

If there is a broadcast booth in heaven…you can bet he’s right there with his Dad.

We have lost a good one…but heaven just got that much better. My prayers are with Skip and his family.

I was watching a Pistons-Hawks game that turned into a blowout, and at one point late in the game, you could hear a fan utter an expletive loud enough to hear over Skip’s mike.

Skip said (paraphrasing): “This is the time of the game where the fans here let loose, so I apologize…but if you enjoy that sort of thing, then stick with us!”

Priceless. God bless. RIP

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho, Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.

Yesterday I drove to Changwon City and bought Book [The Audacity of Hope] by BARACK OBAMA. ^*^

“Where’d you get that funny names?” ^*^

Mr. Obama dazzling Freemason Iluminati? your restlessness in past life came from the tactics which

“after making target tired and when target would be in deep sleep, we do start to move for implanting” ^*^

Looking the cobweb targetting Mr.Obama, he must be free from implant until now I think. But, after visiting German something different about Mr. Obama exist? Such as…

“Don’t believe santa, he is crazy” ^*^

In last judgment, whole thing would change, especially about Good and Bad.

People who want to survive through the Lake of Fire from Jerusalem(Laputa) could be the good, but beasts who want to be reptilian in deep underground area must be the bad. ^*^

Do you know Washuta? ^^ Neutron Hologram being Washuta? Do you believe Photon-Belt? ^^ Washuta’s voice was neutron’s one and Emperor of Babylon did broadcast. ^*^

Washuta insisted that “In the last judgment, we have to go underground area” “Reptile species originally are superior to human being” Puhahaha ^*^

And the emperor of babylon who was direct descendant of Seth&Jacob&Joseph&Jesus died by the troops of Laputa in Narita Airport’s accident last year. ^*^

He knew well about things like this. ^*^

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.

After reading “The Audacity of Hope” by Barack Obama, I sensed that Atlanta Brave’s problem wasn’t today’s one, but from past to now’s one. ^*^

Dazzling Iluminati please!

USA People have anger about Bush and Democrats? ^^ Bush is slave of Babylon and Democrats was made by Babylon. ^^

High Cost of healthcare in USA? Because the people of healthcare almost friends or slave of Babylon. ^*^

Why the university is for the rich only? Because their owner are almolst friends of Babylon. ^*^

Why in USA tax dollars is wasted? because friends and slaves of Babylon are controlling USA people’s tax. ^*^

Why the politics in USA so Stink? because it is so hard for people without implant to be politician. ^*^

Why the politicians consistently favor the wealthy and power? because they are slave or friends of Babylon, they have to siphon the blood of the good to the order of Babylon. ^*^

Why always the government’s program don’t work as advertised? because main member of government was implanted or imposter, they did work by the order of Babylon. ^*^

to be continued…. ^*^

Hi, I’am Root of David living in Sea of Glass in the nest of Babylon now.

Today braves day off? ^*^

Through Book “The Audacity of Hope” by Barack Obama, I can check the real status of USA. ^*^

Iraq war problem? Yeah people like PT&GM of Atlanta Braves did attack Iraq by the order from Babylon. ^^ CIA lied about secret dangerous weapon in Iraq, to the order from Babylon. ^^ Fire them all. ^*^

Abortion? Yeah!! this problem’s real culprit is friends of Babylon in USA and Babylonian. Slave women of USA was being raped by the threatening of neutron sound in their brain waves. So Abortion problem occurred. That women had to do abortion because they couldn’t breed son of demon.

Guns? Yeah!! the USA could fight with neutron until now for this Guns. You got it? If USA would prohibit Guns perfectly, in shortest period, people of USA could be implanted I will promise.

Gay Marriage? the real culprit of this problem is demonized kings of babylon, they threatenned slave women to do Artificial Pregnant from past to now, as a result of that, so many shape only people could be controlled by devils seized human’s brain-stem. So one of Gay’s host in brain-stem is female soul of devil, and another Gay’s host is male one. Keep in mind. And other cases is for slave.

Immigration? this problem didn’t came from the dream of being the rich. You got it? For the attack or the disturbance from Babylon’s neutron, so many people were going to USA. Yeah of course crusader exist in them, so USA government have to block the crusader only not people doing exodus. ^*^

The size of government? getting bigger? ^^ for the purpose of controlling people of USA, Babylon had to make organization which was under control by neutron to big strong one. Why? ^^

The good people of USA are not people but target who babylon have to implant and make slave. Therefore, Babylon had to make their friends and slave to be the member of USA government’s organization.

So, now look!!!

The friends of babylon are now only sucking blood from people of USA. But their income is made by tax people of USA did pay. And why people paying have to be the slave and toy of people receiving tax?

I will miss his honesty. He reminded me of another great announcer Dizzy Dean. They were always themselves and called the game the way they saw it. They were not afraid to argue a call. Skip would get up out of the booth and go express his opinion to the officals. I also liked the way when a fan caught a foul ball, he would make up a city of where the fan was from. It seemed like his way of showing his friendship for the fans. Announcers like Skip are the reason fans watch and listen to the games. Another LEGEND will be missed. I wish the best to Skip’s Family

I will miss Skip’s honesty. He was not one to bs his way thru any subject. There are few announcers today who will ‘tell it like it is’. They carefully tiptoe, fabricate, even tell ‘white lies’ to avoid being controversial. I remember somewhere along the way, he said something like ‘The braves stink’, while the other announcer would defer and say something like, ‘The braves don’t have their A game today’. Yes, Milo was let go when he refused to tell those white lies and cover up year after year of lousy braves teams. But, somehow Skip was honest about it and survived. I respect him for that, God bless his soul.

Add me to the many people saddened by the recent passing of Skip Caray. His dry humor and sarcasm made watching the Braves on TBS a memorable experience, even though I’ve never been a fan of the Braves.

One of my favorite Skip/Harry memories was from back in the mid-90s when Harry, Skip and Chip were all involved in broadcasting a Cubs/Atlanta game in Chicago. Harry asked Skip, “who’s your favorite announcer?” Skip answered, “You are!” Harry then replied, “well at least we agree on that!”

Martin Prado’s 1B playing, Omar Infante’s LF playing are original culprit of today’s lost to Mets.

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.

Theseday, between USA and Russia something strange air exist I think. But Freemason Iluminati you have to know the fact that Babylon want to conceal themselves by war between USA which is consisted of mixed judah’s 12tribes and Russia which is one of Judah’s 12tribe.

Do you copy? Freemason Iluminati and Mr. Putin?

Mr.Putin he did cover the ex-president of Israel, Muslim, but now Israel’s major seat was seized by Babylon completly I think.

Mr.Obama and Mr. Puttin have to neglect the invention of ICBM in Iran, why? Iran is now under the bothside’s resonance schumann attack, by Iraq’s slave and Afganistan’s slave. So Iran now want to protect themselves from Babylon’s neutron attack. Their target isn’t Israel. Keep in mind please….

Therefore now Russia have to wait fighting with USA until Barack Obama would be the president of USA. You got it?

Don’t be deceived by the alienation between USA and Russia by neutron of Babylonian. You got it? ^*^

In World War II, German was slave of neutron, SS Agent was 100% Jesuit, U-boat used portable neutron machine, You got it? Original Culprit, orderer to Nazi were Babylonian who was seizing neutron Anthena Systems. Before 1961, Babylon had Anthena in Manjyu Area of north-east china and north of NorthKorea.

Hi, the research about vote for Obama vs McCain is the same ratio? ^^ Now friends of Obama sensed something related with me and kings of Babylon? ^^ I won’t teach you friends of Obama reality. Just sense. ^*^

“The Audacity of Hope” you people over the world have to read I think.

*America now has one of the highest high school dropout rates in the industrialized world. Why?

Because so many students of U.S.High school disliked to use resonance schumann. So Babylon did attack the good student for request of enemy(friends of babylon in USA)

*Half of all teenagers can’t understand basic fractions, half of all nine-year-olds can’t perform basic multiplication or division, …only 22 percent are prepared to take college-level in English, math, science. Why?

Because Babylon have tried to give chance only to students who want to share sins of neutron with themselves. So, so many other students was attacked by neutron from childhood. You got it? for the purpose of seizing USA by neutron perpectly.

*Many education in USA now being blocked by money. Why?

Because Babylon try to block the good of USA to be elite group. Therefore, so many IT and Wireless techniqe specialist are half Asian, and quarter East-Europian. Why? again, the good of USA people don’t like to make hypercritic Resonance Schumann Internet(Privatized Security of USA)

The history of USA was under the carpet bombing of neutron for 100years I think. ^*^

I gave up baseball in 1994 (the strike). While I will never watch another game, I was a huge fan of Skip, Pete & Ernie from their first year together until 1994. I listened to Skip call other sports during those early years, also, as well as his TNT Sunday Night Football games. Like many of these others, I will miss his sense of humor. He might have been off the wall, but he never said anything that was truly stupid, either. He could provide quality play-by-play or color, which is not true for every broadcaster, and (even more rare) could do so for multiple sports. Had he stayed in St. Louis, we would have missed out on a very unique broadcaster. It was only in the 1980s that I learned that he had a father who was a broadcaster; later still, when I found that his father was celebrated. Skip truly earned his own wings, without being controversial or offensive. Perhaps that, alone, stands as his greatest accomplishment.

Braves win, Braves win, Braves win, Braves win……I gotta steal this one from you dad……HOLY COW!

(David Justice homer off Cincinatti—one of the greatest calls of all time—still gives me goose bumps)

RIP Skip—-Braves baseball will never be the same without you.

bob horner is at bat and he hits a grounder. Skip: Horney is hustling to first and he’s safe Pete: WHO? Skip: oh hell….

Skip starts again:…Horney leads off first…I quit before I get fired…Pete: Letters should be addressed to skip stupid care of TBS

There are so many things I will miss about Skip. I have been a Braves fan since the 80’s when I was kid watching the games with my dad. Skip was the soundtrack for all of those nights in the early 90’s still watching those games with Dad.

I hear his voice and have all of those memories. Like the 1992 NLCS when my dad and I looked at each other and said, “We’re pinning our season on Francisco Cabrera??” And then the excitement when he got the base hit.

I’ll always remember that voice… and miss it terribly.

I’ll miss a lot but I will really miss hearing him say “chopper to Chipper.”

One person writing in mentioned looking for his wife all over the house to tell her something funny that skip said during a broadcast. He said he had done this many many times. I just want to say that is like I wrote the letter. He was the wittiest announcer I ever heard and I am 72.

Your “Skip” had one of the most annoying voices in all of sports. I also thought he was very arrogant. On the other hand his son is a very talented man.

Skip never talked over the game, he usually talked around it and with moments of silence he would actually let just the sound of the game come through the radio. You also knew he would say something funny or sarcastic. Good ol’ Skip.

“Swung, fly ball deep left center, Grissom on the run… Yes! Yes! Yes! The Atlanta Braves have given you a championship! Listen to this crowd!”

They left the mic on when they went to commercial one time to bring in Kolb and all you heard one the t.v. was “Oh great, here comes Kolb, good job Bobby just give the game away”

And if anybody was watching that game, you remember, Kolb did blow the game.

I miss his sour puss delivery. Some may say it was his wry humour. But thats not the way it came across to me.

I have been a braves fan since 1969 and I will never forget Skip Caray and Ernie Johnson. Braves baseball was terrible in the early days but the announcing was the best. Both no longer broadcast now and I miss the sound of summer from those years.

From Rodger

I forgot to mention that although the Braves made the playoffs in 1969 they got real bad sometime after-1975-1980 and then again in the mid to late 80s (and again in 1990)
