Frenchy has a new way of looking at things

If you can’t see the ball, you can’t hit the ball. Maybe the answer to Jeff Francoeur’s struggles this season is that simple.

In 26 day games, the Braves right fielder is hitting .320 (33-for-103) with five homers and 19 RBIs, but in the 50 night games so far, he’s .207 (41-for-198) with three homers and 22 RBIs. That’s a pretty dramatic difference.

And there might be a physical explanation for it. While he was playing at Class A Myrtle Beach in 2004, Francoeur was hit under the right eye with a fouled bunt attempt and he was told that there was a chance the vision in his right eye could weaken.

So Francoeur consulted a specialist and got a contact lens for his right eye.

We all know how much of baseball is mental, so even if Frenchy merely thinks it’s helping, that new lens could be just what the doctor ordered. Even though it didn’t do much good against Ben Sheets last night — I’m not sure anything would have — I’m holding out a little hope that this will help him turn things around.

Believe me, I’ve been as frustrated with his impatience and lack of discipline at the plate as anyone, but that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped rooting for him. He’s a good kid, and it’s tough watching him go through this. Plus, if he starts coming through in clutch situations, even just by making productive outs, imagine what this offense could do.

(Side note from last night’s game: Just how many innings can Jeff Bennett throw before his arm falls off? Looks like we might get to find out.)

I wasn’t able to post the pitching matchups for this series yesterday, but here they are for the remaining two games:

Tuesday: Dave Bush vs. Charlie Morton. In his last outing, Bush had a perfect game until the fifth inning and carried a no-hitter through seven, while Morton’s quality start was ruined when Jeff Ridgway gave up a three-run shot to the first batter he faced.

Wednesday: Jeff Suppan vs. Jorge Campillo. Suppan didn’t make it out of the second inning in his last start, and Campillo gave up four runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings in a loss to the Mariners.

Upcoming TV Schedule
Tuesday: vs. Brewers, 7:00, Peachtree TV
Wednesday: vs. Brewers, 1:00, Peachtree TV
Thursday: Off-day
Friday: at Blue Jays, 7:07, SportSouth
Saturday: at Blue Jays, 1:07, SportSouth
Sunday: at Blue Jays, 1:07, SportSouth

It didn’t seem to bother him last year. It sounds to me somebody is making excuses for not producing.

Personally, I don’t think his eyesight is the primary culprit. It’s his head …. “I have to pull”

If it’s his eyes, then why do his hips and shoulders fly open to soon? He’s thinking he must hit a homerun to left, just like in his high school days when the people roared when he hit his mammouth hr’s. Problem is, major league pitchers adjust to hitters.

He needs help. All we fans can do is hope the contact helps him to “refocus” on his hitting - just no more excuses - hit the ball to the opposite field for a while - it’ll be all better.

Frenchy needs to learn the strike zone, not the eye charts. He hit better at nite last year, so I believe it’s not his sight, its his mind. Frenchy is overrrated, another Brad Komminsk. Trade him now, while he has some value.

I agree with contact lens as an excuse..but if helps, great. Maybe thats the reason he’s swinging at crap in the dirt or by the umps head..his strike zone is outta whack. His 0-3 perfomance yesterday certainly didn’t help him. We better win the next two against the brewers.

What does a contact lens have to do with plate discipline? Now instead of swinging & missing at balls in the dirt, he’ll be hitting dribblers. His problem is lack of discipline, not something physical. Maybe he can use his improved eyesight to read Ted Williams’ book….

Maybe instead of concentrating on what they can do to help Francouer see the ball better, maybe they should determine why his vision in deteriorating to begin with? If they twiddle their thumbs and keep prescribing ever-powerful contacts while he slowly goes blind… that won’t benefit anyone - especially Francouer.

I don’t think the contacts will help him, but you quitting might. You’re terrible at your job. Please stop wasting everyone’s time with your whiny drivel. There’s got to be something you’re qualified for, but writing isn’t it. Well, maybe Denny’s needs a menu description writer.

Once the players are healthy and in place, I’d be in favor of platooning the entire outfield to help out in the matchups:

RF: LHP, Francoeur RHP, Norton

CF: LHP, Infante RHP, Blanco/Kotsay

LF; LHP, Diaz, RHP, B. Jones

Obviously, only 4 outfielders can be kept so one of those platoons would not be possible but for now, I’d definitely platoon Francoeur and the CF positions. Check the numbers on the players involved and you’ll see some dramatic rationales.

I’m just glad to finally see some braves fan jump off the much hyped Francoeur/Parkview bandwagon. Braves fans gave him all the glory before he consistently produced all because he was a poster child of an athlete in high school. Compare him to McCann. McCann came from the same county as Francoeur but didn’t receive any hype. What has Brian done since…about to be a 3 time all-star in his 1st full 3 years in the league. Enough said.

Frenchy is a medicour ball player. He is trying to hard to be another McCann and he is a long way from that. Braves are very weak. They are trying to use old arms to win. They need to cut ties with Smoltz (place him in farm system to work with young arms), cut ties with Glavine, definitely help pack Hamptons U-Haul. They need to keep young pitchers and look for a fifth starter. Defensively they are set at catcher, second, short and third. All other positions are open. Tex is like Francour, mediocure player. Outfield is very doubtful.

HOW LAME IS THIS TOWN’S MEDIA?

John Smoltz’s separate spring training. Chipper’s out for a few days. Francouer’s struggles…

These are all just the LATEST stories where “Joe Public” can see there is more going on, but the media will NOT investigate until an answer is given. It isn’t until the story blows up: Smoltz out for season with surgery. Chipper? Out for much longer than reported. Francouer getting fitted for a contact lens for a degenerating eye?
Are you freaking kidding me?

Here’s a tip to the sports press in this town: Where there is smoke, there is fire! Unbelievable how bad this towns sports press is.

Ask questions until you get an answer and when you get an answer, if it doesn’t add up to the story… keep asking everyone you can. Try that!

By Supes

June 24, 2008 1:58 PM | Link to this

Jeff FRANCINE’s struggles may have been caused by the eye/vision problem, but the root of the problem lies much deeper.

It’s the entire approach at the plate. Situational hitting. Mechanical struggles. As well as unwillingness to go take what the pitcher gives you most times.

If this keeps up, once the Braves get Kotsay and Diaz back…he needs to be sent down to AA to work on the whole art of hitting all over again. He is not beyond reproach and being sent down, if it helps him turn it around.

…every other day or so.

Here’s a thought. Put Chiiper at first (if/when he returns). Place Infante at third. Infield is then set as well as catching. We can then work on the outfield. And let us not forget it is time for Cox to step aside. He is constantly being out coached every game.

Then the next entry:

I was plainly pointing (should insert the word “out” here) that if it’s not important enough to proof read before you send out a column blog (incredibly awkward - should be “before submitting a blog” ) (should have comma here) then your writing, opinions or comments become irrelevant. Something has to be said about the rampages of blatant negativity here. Maybe you downers, whiners, and cry-babies are the reason that Atlanta is such a horrible sports town as our national reputation seems to be.

I hate to say it but look at Cubs fans or Red Sox fans. They suffered for DECADES and yet they sold out game after game after game with losing seasons. Practically all that’s found on this blog is crybabies and baseball experts with the answers to put the Braves in the World Series for the next thousand years.

Get a clue! Stop watching the Braves if you hate it and them so much. If you can’t see the glass is half full then I hope you choke on your last drink.

AND… please save all batting and “fundamental” baseball tips for your children OR make signs and picket at the stadium.

Looks like CC has supporters!

Hey guys, cut the kid some slack. He’s had to grow up quick, being thrust into a position and EXPECTED to be a top producer in the first 3 years of his MLB career. There are very few others that fit this category. To be honest with you, only a few come to mind (PUJOLS, HOWARD, C.JONES, and a few more).

While his average is not that great, he’s still produced. Granted, it’s not at the level we’d like him to be at, but he’ll get better.

There’s a reason why hitting a 95mph baseball is considered to be a very difficult skill to be good at.

When he starts making arbitration money, or contract money, THEN bash him.

If you think you can do better, go try out next year…i’m SURE you will do better. If you’re swings are as good as your whining, then you may even hit over .400!

Francouer is earning $470,000 in 2008.

If you want pick on someone, there’s probably at least 100+ players in MLB that are making double what Francouer is bringing in and still not producing what he is.

Tomahawk Matt, you make a compelling point. Frenchy isn’t costing us much in terms of money and is probably one of the better values out there. But if he is going to continue to be cheap and inconsistent, maybe it’s time to find a more reliable, and more costly RF, until Jeff can mature a little.

I particularly enjoyed watching Kotsay’s arm in center…perhaps he could take over RF for a while when he comes back. Leaving B. Jones, Infante, Norton and Blanco to man the other OF positions. Just a thought.

I actually have a similar difference in vision between my right and left eyes, just like Francouer, and I noticed it when I started missing fly balls in the outfield during my senior year of high school. Let me say this - if Jeff has the same kind of vision problems that I had, you can’t even imagine how much it messes you up. You start making ridiculous mistakes both out in the field and up at the plate. Since then I have been wearing a contact lens in just one eye, and when I play soccer or softball or flag football, I notice a huge difference. Unfortunately, it doesn’t really help improve my golf game!

So, maybe give Frenchy a break, and let’s see if he doesn’t begin seeing the ball a whole lot better.

If Jeff were consistently hitting the ball 280 or 290 feet then I would suggest he needed to bulk up or swing harder. He is not making contact.

He is a “natural” hitter and they go into the worst slumps because they understand less about mechanics.

He needs to do two things: (1)slow his bat so that he makes better contact and (2) select better pitches to hit. I guarantee you that TP has told him these things. Hitting coaches preach this stuff all day. It is the hotdogs who swing for the fences.

I only hope jeff doesn’t get lucky and hit a few by accident. Then he will continue his bad habits without correcting them.

I wish him the best. We need a good line drive hitter.

This family supports an outstanding athlete that never gives up,fights through adversity, and is a positive role model to his sport, community, and especially young kids.

That’s great. Really is. I support the Atlanta Braves, and last I checked, Jeff Francoeur has helped THIS team VERY little THIS season. In fact, he’s been detrimental to the the team.

If Jeff Francoeur has been so hard working, then why haven’t we seen him make adjustments in his 3+ seasons with the big league club? Why was he on the golf course in ST instead of figuring out how to hit the ball to right field, hit fly balls with runners on 3rd < 2 out, learn the Major League strike zone, and work on his throwing that has obviously gone amuck?

If you care about Jeff being a positive influence on his community, I have no problem with that. Actually, I’d recommend it for Jeff instead of baseball. Maybe he can leave the team and focus on social work.

I’d almost guarantee that the next right fielder also does positive things for the community like most pro athletes do, AND perform on the baseball diamond.

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.

Hey!!!Jeff Francoeur!!!

  1. Calm Down your heart to stabl and silent status when you are at bat. Just like you are dreaming.

  2. This can make your swing speed exploded and as a result of that your decision about pitched ball must start at lately and you can look pitched ball to the end.

  3. Reduce weight training adequatly. You did too much weight training in last winter. So your muscle’s power was strengthened but your swing speed reduced.

  4. As a result of that, your reaction about incorner done bad compared with last year. So I wrote about your basic swing theory you learned when you were young.

  5. And again, too much power of muscle can make your grip of bat too tightly and then, your batted ball’s spin would be reduced. Why? the weight of bat can make HR and your arm’s muscle can’t make HR. Do you understand?

  6. Too tight grip of bat must make your arm’s muscle’s power to be used in batting, but soft grip can make your arm to use weight of bat for hitting pitched ball.

These are not my experience but my sixthsense, inspiration. Keep in mind! ^*^

May the force of Messiah be with you
