Looking ahead to the Braves’ homestand

I had hoped that Wednesday’s win signaled a serious turning point in the Braves’ season. Jo-Jo Reyes had yet another stellar outing, the Braves rallied to take the lead in the ninth, and Mike Gonzalez slammed the door shut, showing an intensity that this team sorely needs.

But Thursday the same old problems reared their ugly heads.

With a new-look (but somehow familiar) lineup, the Braves battled back to tie the game in the top of the ninth only to have the bullpen blow it in the bottom half. To top it off, the 5-4 loss gave them sole possession of the dubious record for most consecutive one-run losses on the road and Chipper Jones went 0-for-4 on the day to drop his average below .400 for the first time since April 12.

But there is a bright side: They won more games on this trip (four) than on any other road trip this season. In fact, if someone had told me after that dreadful sweep in Chicago that they’d go 4-6, I would have been thrilled. And, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman, Chipper told his parents earlier this week that he’d be happy when he got below .400 and was no longer asked daily about accomplishing something he thinks is impossible. “Now it’s time to start a new streak,” he said.

So let’s take a cue from Chipper and look ahead to the homestand. First up is the only team that’s lost more games on the road this season than the Braves. The Mariners are in a state of complete disarray, having fired their GM earlier this week and axing their manager yesterday, but the Braves can’t afford to take them lightly.

Here are the matchups for the Mariners series:

Friday: Erik Bedard vs. Jorge Campillo. Campillo led the Pacific Coast League in ERA while in the M’s farm system in 2007 but Seattle never really gave him a chance, which led to his signing a minor league deal with the Braves last December. That turned out to be a godsend, because Campillo is 2-1 with a 2.78 ERA in his six starts this season, allowing just 10 runs in 32 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, Seattle’s big offseason signing, Bedard, has been struggling through some injuries this year and while he has a 2.95 ERA in his past four starts, his road ERA is 7.40.

Saturday: Jarrod Washburn vs. Jair Jurrjens: A skipped start (thanks to a sprained ankle) may have been just what Jair needed, because he came out firing Monday, blanking the Rockies through 7 2/3 innings for his seventh win of the year. Seattle’s Washburn held the Nationals to one run in six innings in his last start but didn’t factor in the decision.

Sunday: Carlos Silva vs. Tim Hudson: Huddy’s still looking for his first interleague win after giving up a season-high six runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Rangers on Tuesday. He’s 0-10 with a 7.82 ERA in interleague play with the Braves. Silva, another disappointing offseason acquisition, was ejected from his last start with two outs to the fifth inning against the Marlins. He’s lost eight in a row since his last win on April 17.

I’m going to stop short of predicting a sweep, but they have to take two out of three here. It’s time for the bats to get in gear so the bullpen isn’t even a factor.

By the way, if you’re heading to Turner Field during this homestand, be sure to check out the new giant Chik-Fil-A cow doing the Tomahawk Chop! See photos of it here.

This is a must sweep series. Period!

The braves won’t sweep anyone. Bobby will find some way to lose at least 2 of the games with the mariners. Maybe Sariano will volunteer to pitch in one of these games. I guess he is a volunteer pitcher since he tells Bobby if he wants to pitch or not. His problem is the big contract he signed not his elbow.

Looking for the sweep, but can’t wait to see Ichiro play in person.

On Saturday get to kick back and watch UGA’s Diamond Dawgs continue to kick arse in the College World Series, almost as fun as when they smacked down Tech 18-6!

By its over - deal with it!

I blam yesterday’s loss on Bobby, now i love the Braves and admire Bobby, but Bobby just give it up. Just keep the hot hand in the 9th Ohman should have stayed in he’s the hottest pitcher in the pen. Instead he wants to keep throwing Bennett out there give me a brake ( although he could have threw Buddy out there) All that mixing and matching was useless. Although Bobby is respectable coach which all his players seem to love, he doesn’t throw his players under the bus like some of these idoit coaches do, he handles his business behide close doors like it suppoose to be. But i’m missin one thing from the Braves the past few years since missing the playoffs, it was that edge that they had that no one exspeacially out the NL east could beat them.

Everybody on here hates. If you’re going to be pessimistic, get off these message boards! No one cares to hear what you say. Part of being a fan is BELIEVING your team is good enough to go all the way. Take your negativity elsewhere. The Braves will win at least two out of three this week and 7 of their next 10 games to man the fort. Go Braves and lets get this offense going, the pitching is now there.

mmm…how many times can someone hold out hope for a turn around? winning 2 out 3 only gains a team one game toward the .500 mark so the braves aren’t going anywhere. The bullpen is inconsistent, the batters can only beat marginal major league pitchers, the 2nd baseman cannot field his position and the manager should have retired 2 years ago. lots of luck…the braves will need it. I am thinking Gonzalez goes back on the DL before the season is out.

Well we need a leadoff hitter someone that can make havic on the bases. Although he is weak at defense Juan Pierre is available. And does anyone know the health of Martin Prado, Kotsay, Diaz, Glavine, and broken glass Hampton. What do you think the braves would do when at least Prado, Kotsay and Diaz gets back. Somebody looks like trade bait.

Boyer really making your team look bad, Bobby. If you stopped trying the L-L, R-R strategy and given Charlie a chance to get out of it, then the two runs in the ninth would have given us insurance, and that would have Bennett. Instead, you used 3 pitchers who can never find the strike zone in close or tied games and Manny Acosta’s the game, AGAIN! Sorry, I couldn’t resist the play on words. It was too perfect and I had to do it, but it also makes sense!

A better question—why is Ridgway on the roster and why was Stockman sent to Richmond. Everytime I have seen Stockman pitch, he looks overpowering, and he has pitched great everywhere! Ridgway gives up a key hit or a homerun everytime he pitches. But Stockman, who mowed down everyone when he did pitch in for the Braves, gets sent back to Richmond. I guess, for some reason, Bobby things we now need three left handed relievers in the bullpen…including one that can’t get anyone out. And why does Escobar lead off? He is not a lead off hitter. He is a great #2 hitter. Blanco would be better at leading off. Kelly Johnson would be much better in the #6 or #7 hole. I admire Bobby Cox, but I often don’t get his thinking. And his thinking this year is not working! Change it up, Bobby! And get Stockman back in Atlanta and Ridgway back in Richmond where he belongs!

Seriously, is there a more embarrassing sight in all of Atlanta than this new “tomahawk cow”? I love the Braves, and I love Chick-Fil-A, but this debacle of a marketing idea gives new definition to the word tacky.

I am embarrassed for the franchise, the city, the fans, the players and the restaurant.

Please, no more tacky gimmicks at Turner Field! Can we just play baseball?

Could Blanco hit first? Then Escobar, Chipper, Tex, Mac, Jones, Johnson, Frenchy? I think that the loss of Kotsay in the two spot hurts a lot. I hate to say it, but when kotsay is completly healthy bring him back and put him in right field if Frenchy is still struggling. Tex and Frenchy are usually second half players, so all we can do is hope. I strongly feel we need to go get a #2 starter. Who know about Hampton and Glavine, but the young arms are exciting. We still have a chance. Tell me what you think of my line-up. Have a good day!

Dear Chop Chick, I’ll ask you. What do you think of a preeminent athlete—arguably one of the 2 greatest switch hitters of all time—who at the age of 36 still wants to be called Chipper?? If you think it’s okay until he’s through playing—well, that is fine. BUT let’s say he lives to be 97, at some point do you believe it might behoove him to go by a grownup name??

Think of all those Susies who became Susan or Sue or those Georgies who became George.

Just at the age of 97—and can you imagine THIS GUY at even 47, he will need a team of EMT’s and RN’s to get him to the table——I can’t imagine being called “Chipper”—It’s just silly. Isn’t it??

LizDawg: I’m sure you are like all other UGA baseball fans and did not care one way or another about the team until beating Tech. So stop gloating and start following the team like a fan.

I just don’t get it. Ohman is the only reliable arm in the pen. This lefty-lefty, righty-righty thing is so overblown it’s ridiculous. It is always amazing to me where lefties come from. When I grew up, there were maybe 2-3 lefties in the ENTIRE LEAGUE. No matter where I played. Maybe lefties are just naturally good and a much higher % of them actually make it. Anyway, many of us grew up batting righty against righty pitchers, and we never had a problem! Not only that, our pitchers were usually our best hitters. At what point can righties no longer hit righties, and do pitchers stop being able to hit?

Let’s see… Turner Field is located in a bad side of town, fans are hounded by street vendors from the time you leave your car till you get to the gate, we play “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” in the bottom of the 7th inning, we have a manager that picks his nose on national TV and ownership that cares more about money than winning, Turner Field is no longer a really nice venue compared to many other places, and we have Te-she-Ra and Fran-cine……. nope, I’d say the big tomahawk cow is just the next natural evolution in the continuing downspiral of this franchise.

We don’t need a BOYER goats in late-tie innings. L-L, R-R,…kiss my a*, it doesn’t work always. Ohman should have pitched all the way. I do NOT trust any in our bellpen except Ohman and Mike Gonzales. Everyone other then these 2 pitchers FORGET -how to pitch when when runners in base. It is a comman sense that DO NOT walk leadoff man in late innings. Just start off with freaking slider or fastball with omph down to strick zone. Even if they hit, it will be fly or infield out. I am tired of seeing Acosta and Boyer going corners for leadoff man and walking one after another until we lose the game. We burn 3 pitchers in one inning yesterday with tie game.

I have been a braves fan for many years but I can say I just dont watch them anymore. I used to attend 30 or so games per year but stopped that too. Why? Because there is no life here. They are the most boaring team in the majors. I think they get more jacked up over whats to eat then playing baseball.

These MLB players are all overpaid and the agents are crazy. I just want nothing to do with them anymore. I dont care if they win or they lose (which they do quite well). The braves will not pay money for pen arms and until they do its always going to be a flop in the night. I just wont give my money or waist my time rooting and watching a team that does not want to win. And they dont. From management to players, they are lazy, swing at 1st pitches in every bat and just plain dull. They cant beat a 7 era pitcher because they dont study up or try. Frenchy is the new Andruw and Tex was a big waist of our minor league tallent. But thats what the braves club is. Its the minors of MLB. Until that changes and we start paying a little for pen arms that can close a game, I just dont care to be involved. And something else to note. A lot of my co-workers and friends feel the same way. What a joke this team is. What a joke.

Why in the world did they send down Stockman, he only worked 7 +/- innings but I don’t think he gave up a run. Boyer and Bennet have just been gas cans. They should have at least given Stockman a chance. I think he would have been another Moylan if they would give him a chance.

I am a huge Braves fan and have always been for my entire life. However, there is only one word that can describe how I feel about this organization right now and that is “Disapointed”. It seems that we care more about making money from the fans rather than win games. The Braves are excellent at developing great major league talent and then letting them go to some other team who is willing to spend some $cash$. I agree with “its over”…Until we get an owner who is willing to spend some money on some big time major leaguers, we will always be a mediocre organization that barley squeks into the playoffs and goes home with nothing to show for it.

True that ITS OVER & BLACKCOBBLER, This town & team are struggling. Have Blank buy the team, move it to Duluth or Alpharetta, get rid of the chop & the damn cow. I mean look at Tampa right now…lowest paid team yet they just swept the cubs. Braves have a high payroll & get swept my the p** reds. Its pathetic to watch. And another question..why can’t our own commentators rip on our team. After every game they lose, they sound so lame. Call it like it is!!

Hey, Mrs. Bobby Cox, is that your biggest problem with Chipper…or should I say Larry Wayne Jones, Jr.? Part of the charm of baseball is in nicknames and I’m willing to bet that Hall of Famers George Lee Anderson, George Herman Ruth and James Augustus Hunter just for starters had no problem growing old being called “Sparky,” “Babe,” and “Catfish.”

Ok, the Braves bullpen trouble really has me riled up today. I think some of the pitchers in the ‘pen need to have specific roles. It’s time to establish a 7th inning guy, 8th inning guy, then obviously Gonzy as closer. It just seems like Bobby starts micro-managing the pen when the Braves are in jams and it drives me crazy. I’m REALLLLLLY not understanding why Bennett is always being brought in when they’re in a jam or during a close game. Honestly, I think the dude needs a couple of days off. I truly don’t understand the theory behind bringing Boyer for more than one inning either - it just doesn’t work out.

I know the losing can’t be pinned on the bullpen entirely as the Braves are going to have to start hitting in the clutch but it would be nice if close games could stay close! Instead of them exploding wide open like what happened today vs Seattle in the 8th. Ahhhhh! Just had to vent. Still love my Bravos though…

Cox needs to go. If he had been a manager of another team, he probably would have already been gone. Because the fans don’t seem to care what Cox does as far as his decisions, the management just lets all his mistakes go. When you lose 22 straight road games on the road by one run, something needs to be corrected.

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.

Jeff Francoeur have problem with eye? ^*^And let’s explain about theory of curing eye from now on.

In the beginning, God Elohim created the heaven and the earth. Do you remember? The heaven means outer space from geomagnetic-field and exist over the time and the earth means under the geomagnetic field and the time.

So the heaven can be grasped by not satelite or spaceship but evoluted brainstem of human normally.

After that, God Elohim created human being’s eye to be cured easily by the light on Mind’s Eye. That is to say, the light of Messiah. ^*^ Look at this….

Whole kind of problem in eye originated from polluted blood petrified around hindbrain.

The petrified particle around hindbrain disturb the stream of clean blood between eye and neck, as a result of that, the function of natural recovery around eye fall to bottom and illness of eye occur.^*^

Therefore, for cure of eye problem, radiate the light of Messiah in your mind’s eye and penetrate through both side of hindbrain. And your whole kind of eye problem would be healed quickly I will promise.

But slave of Babylon can’t do this. Slave and friends of Babylon must say “Non-sense”“Insane”^*^
