Braves need consistency to be consistent

The road-weary Braves are getting a shot in the arm today, with Mike Gonzalez due to come off the disabled list. After getting in at 3:30 a.m. before the past two games, I’m sure a good night’s sleep couldn’t hurt, either.

With all they’ve gone through on this trip — the sweep in Chicago and a Sunday night game before the one-day stopover in Colorado — it’s impressive that they still have a chance at .500 on this 10-games-in-10-days marathon.

Thanks to Carroll Rogers’ story, we know how excited Gonzalez is to be coming back, so how excited are you? I’m hoping he’s the rock the bullpen needs to anchor it and let everyone settle into specific roles, a luxury they haven’t had since Rafael Soriano and Peter Moylan went down.

The Braves have been anything but consistent this year, but it’s tough to be consistent when everyone’s role changes daily. There’s been no structure in the rotation or the bullpen and no definitive lineup, which might explain a few things.

If the young arms can keep the rotation solid from here on out, here’s hoping Gonzo can do that for the bullpen. The lineup, however, is another matter altogether.

I’ve seen several posts offering Bobby Cox a few suggestions. Since it gets juggled all the time, anyway, here’s mine — feel free to add yours:

CF Gregor Blanco
SS Yunel Escobar
3B Chipper Jones
C Brian McCann
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Brandon Jones
RF Jeff Francoeur
2B Kelly Johnson

Jeff F. and Kellie J.are killing the possibilities of the braves going anywhere this season.Bring up Josh Anderson to replace JF. Put infante in for kj and send both of thier sorry butts down to let them know they are very easily replaceable.I can’t stomach watching another inning go by with these two clowns in the line up!Bobby the rule is pretty much in any job if you don’t perform you are warned, and if you still don’t perform, then see ya! That goes for your job as well!!

your line-up looks good, but will we have consistency? my hope is that when Kotsay comes back Bobby will sit Francouer down a few days and get a fresh bat in left. after that rest him every 10-14 days.there is no reward in being mentally “fried”.we are at the point of the season where they all need a break - even Tex.just my thoughts.whats yours? oh, no more of this “fire Bobby” junk. HOW STUPID IS THAT!!!! GO DAWGS

This “Hack Attack” approach with Francoeur is getting old. 3 K’s last night, how many pitches did he see, 10-12? You’d think after 3 years he would have gotten better in his approach at the plate. He needs to go to AAA, maybe he’ll learn to recognize a slider from a curve, change up, etc.

JF is not the same player he was 2yrs ago ..this is obvious…hi fast ball ..slider down and away..what is noticeable is that the boy like enthusiasm seems to be missing…he is pressing so drop him down in the order..too good of a talent to ruin carl aven

Im sorry everybody, but Im going to have to take the blame for all the Bravos bad luck and poor play. I dont get to catch their games live because of my work schedule so I have to record the games on my DVR. 98% of the time when I do they play poorly and lose. Hopefully things will turn around cause I threw the piece of crap out the window last night. Again, I apologize.

Pitching is NOT this teams problems. I’m glad Gonzo is back but pitching is not this team’s main concern.

Fran-cine and Te-she-ra are killing this team.

I love how the Braves brass just sits back and does nothing while the East title slowing sinks out of sight. Pathethic.

If we’re not going to win to compete, I’d much rather just sell off some of these losers and bring up some younger players.

Why would you move a leadoff hitter that’s hitting .300 down to second? Why would Kelly Johnson, with his power, hit eighth? Oh yeah, this is the dumb broad that wanted Bobby to “step down” a few weeks ago.

June 18, 2008 1:19 PM | Link to this

I agree with moving Blanco to leadoff, the only thing I’m not sure about is what happens after McCann. I know Kelly should be no higher than 7th, so I think it should be:

Blanco Escobar Jones Teixeira McCann B. Jones Johnson Francoeur

I’m really just sick and tired of seeing Francoeur go up their with absolutely 0 approach. The Braves have dug themselves into a hole by making him their marketed face of the franchise in all their commercials and all those teenage girls buying his jerseys. He should be in AAA right now learning the pitches and actually trying to use his head, but he’s too popular with the ignorant fan for Bobby to demote.

I don’t know what the solution will be, but something needs to be done to address the Tex and Frenchy flame-out. One thing I know for sure, I would drop Tex out of the 4 hole and mone Bmac into it. I would also put JF lower in the order where he can do less damage.

Between JF and YE we sure aren’t seeing any stress placed on the opposing pitcher. Last night if these two had showed some patience we may have got into their bullpen an inning sooner, thereby improving our chances of rallying to win the game.

With every passing game JF reminds me more and more of the 2006 and 07 Andruw Jones. No way I would extend him a long-term contract unless it was for a basic salary plus a bunch of loaded incentives (ie: OBP, RBI, etc)

Talking about Fran cine…did ya see how his first at bat was? Swung at every pitch…missed all in strike zone, fouled off the one or two that was above his head. Pa-thet-ic!!!

Kelly does need to be hitting 6,7 or 8. Power at the end is a great thing. Escobar might be hitting .300 in the leadoff spot, but he was hitting like.330 from the 2nd spot. So it makes sense to give Blanco a shot at the leadoff spot and Escobar 2nd.

By wde

June 18, 2008 1:31 PM | Link to this

I agree, I love me some Escobar but he hasn’t been very patient as of late. I just don’t think he fits the lead off role, and I don’t think it fits him back. He atleast makes contact and puts it into play. It’s K all day for Francoeur

Your line looks fine and is likely better than what B/C is wheeling out night after night.

Two things must be done. Blanco to lead off and JF to 8th. Those two moves alone would likely buy the team several more wins.

CC! This article is a rehash of much of what is said on all the different Braves blogs - I expect new and fresh stuff from you so was a bit disappointed. But we all have bad days (sometimes think I have more than most) so will excuse you the trite and repetitive thoughts on this one. I know it must be hard to come up with original and fresh material every day. Many who reply on this and other blogs certainly do not. A 162 game season is long and we all tend to look at the wins and losses (too many losses) and get in a rut - maybe more on what Frank Wren has to go through to even get another GM to start discussions; what matchups are intriguing and why; who replaces a Brian Jones at Richmond and how they are doing; CC! yours has been a refreshing column to date - keep that up.

Brandon Jones Yunel Escobar Chipper Jones Brian McCann Mark Teixeira Gregor Blanco Jeff Francouer Kelly Johnson

The reason I have Brandon Jones leadoff is because he puts the bat on the ball very well and he is getting on base alot. He also has the pop in his bat to go gap to gap with the ball and be in scoring position for the rest of the lineup. Gregor Blanco is also a good candidate for the leadoff position, but I just really like the lineup having a good gap to gap hitter leading off.

Why the Braves cannot win:

  1. Mark Bradley says they will.
  2. Their young players are still not playing fundamental baseball and refuse to do so. Example: Blanco catching flyouts without covering his glove last night, trying to make it look like a better play than it was.
  3. Francouer refuses to be patient at the plate, 3 strikeouts last night. He refuses to heed the advice given to him.
  4. They are relying on the long ball, not playing small ball.
  5. Chemistry seems to be lacking.

i LIKE THE LINEUP BUT fRENCH WOULD BE OUT AND INFANTE IN LEFT BLANCO IN CENTER AND BRANDON JONES IN RIGHT. KELLY IS FINE WITH ME BUT HE SHOULD BE 6 OR 7TH. wITH THE EXCEPTION OF CHIPPER THE WHOLE TEAM NEEDS TO FIGURE OUT HITTING WITH MEN ON. WE WASTE GOOD STARTING PITCHING DAILY BY NOT MAKING GOOD OUTS OR GETTING THAT KEY HIT. WE DON’T PLAY SMALL BALL AND MOVE RUNNERS OVER, SAME OLE STORY. CHOP CHICK KEEP IT UP

Did you really just write “Nanny nanny boo boo”?

As for stats, try doing comparisons. Escobar is hitting .300 overall (actually he is hitting .297). Great. How is he doing in the leadoff spot, without factoring in his other at-bats where he has not hit lead-off? How has he done in the second spot, without factoring in his other at-bats where he has not hit second? Sure, Kelly has some power, but how has he done in the seventh spot, alone? How has he done in the sixth spot, alone? What is his average in each spot he has batted, how many homeruns compared to the other spots? Try those stats and then present an argument.

BA I think what the folks are trying to say is that you don’t have to be insulting to get your point across. In fact, the people around here will take you a lot more seriously if you’re polite. And if you just can’t be polite, I’m sure there’s a Mets blog for you somewhere. And to Show Some Respect, prattvillenolzfan and Big Dawg and all the others who enjoy this blog: Thanks for the kind words — it’s good to have you around!

Was it polite to suggest that less than two months into the season Bobby Cox should retire? Guess that doesn’t qualify as an insult. Maybe I’m just bitter because you gave me the ULTIMATE insult- you used the “M” word! I absolutely despise the Mutts! So for that, I will give you credit. That and having the guts to address a mere minion like me. So I’ll take your que: I POLITELY object to hitting Blanco leadoff. He’s done a great job in the eight hole turning the lineup over. Furthermore, I can’t see hitting Johnson eighth and Jones hitting sixth. Maybe this lineup was designed to urk people and generate posts.

Looking back through the posts, you never asked me one question, so your argument is still lacking. Also, you chose to insult people rather than prove your point with information that might make you look intelligent. If you look back, I never said anything about disagreeing with you, you just chose to run your mouth instead of saying why he should stay in the lead-off spot and backing it up. You never even asked if I or anyone else agreed or disagreed with you and why, but you chose to insult a lady who did nothing to you, just gave an opinion. Gladly, I have a family to support so I can be truly grateful that I am not able to watch every game. They are more important than baseball.

These guys are in the major leagues folks. and they don’t call them the ‘BIGS’ for nothing. So I don’t buy the assertions these guys (like Jeff)are not the players they were. They are playing the best there is anywhere. They are going thru on the job training.(Remember Glavine, Hoss and Smoltz when they were these guys ages?). THEY ARE GOING TO BE REALLY GOOD. It’s just painful to watch while players mature. Right now they have issues of confidence, consistency, and learning how to adjust that they don’t train in the minors. But they do show moments of awesomeness.WHen they get all the kinks out they will be the caliber we are used to seeing in the Big A. You guys are giving me ulcers but you sure don’t make me bored. Don’t give up guys!! If we didn’t care we wouldn’t complain.

What is all this love for Blanco? Am I missing something? He is fast and plays a good outfield but the guy is batting .252. That’s not going to help our lineup. Call me crazy but .252 with 1 homerun and 8 RBIs will not cut it.

Esco hits for a better average in the two spot. Kelly hits for a better average w/power in the 7 spot.

The point of moving Blanco to leadoff, is to 1. give his speed a shot at it and 2. to gain the power, average, and rbi potential of TWO players, while moving Blanco to fill the leadoff. Stats on Blanco are null and void taking them from the 8 hole. He works the count, bunts well, and will get better pitches to hit in the One hole.

Question: What would it hurt to LOOK at it Bobby?? lol

By VaBravesfan

June 19, 2008 9:47 AM | Link to this

It is kind of a “catch 22” situation. Escobar hits better in the 2 hole, Johnson hits better (statistically) in the 6 or 7 slot. However, I don’t think Blanco hits enough to be leadoff. Hey BA, making fun of someone because their kids respect them, or for taking elderly to the doctor or picking up trash? Come on!

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Jinhae City southkorea now.

In any team and term, the original member exist. What is this original member? Answer is that.

  1. Player who think brave their own team.

  2. Player who have the sense of responsibility about team’s record.

  3. Player who can reduce their salary for the difficult situation of team.

Look! When Yunel Escobar hit game-off homer. Veteran can go out into the field slowly and no problem.

Jeff Francoeur, Brian McCann, Mattew Diaz, Kelly Johnson, Mark Teixeira, etc did fierce cheer at Yunel Escobar.

So many players friends of Babylon were the army of crusader not player of Braves and wasn’t be cheerful at original player’s game-off HR.

You got it?

Now do you want to expel J.Smoltz, T.Glavin, C.Jones, the original member? for young unverified player? for shortest record? The three star player did reduce salary for team. You got it?

May the force of Messiah be with you.

P.S: Theseday USA made weapon to be retired by the order from Babylon. You got it? Such as, A-10 Thunderbolt, MH-53(Helicopter), etc.

Look! these weapons are menace to Babylon living in korean peninsla. You can check your weaphon’s reliability only through attacking about Neutron. You got it?

Sonar, Radar, Resonance Schumann, High Active Auroral Research Project, are under the Neutron’s influence. You got it?

In U-boat, SS officer was on board. Why? for portable neutron machine’s driving. You got it?
