Braves have to find a way to lift this curse
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here? Jair Jurrjens twists an ankle leaving Wrigley last night? Unbelievable.
Do we need a live rooster to take the curse off the mound? Did they wait too long to replace the strength and conditioning coach?
I’ve been a fan for more than 30 years now (wow, does that make me feel old), and I’ve never seen a season like this. Do they even have enough warm bodies to get through nine innings, not to mention, God forbid, extras?
I don’t want to see any animals harmed in any way, but how about some sort of exorcism or good-luck ritual in the locker room before tonight’s game, just to make everyone feel better?

CC! You have hit it right on the nailhead! We need a bucket of chicken sacrificed tonight - I am heading for my favorite chicken place after work and picking one up and I promise I will eat it before the game starts.
On another note, I had a tryout with the Milwaukee Braves in Rushville, Nebraska in 1963 and though I did not get a second look, or invitation, I have been a fan since the 1957 World Series and the experience at the camp was a highlight of my young life. So, at 30 years a fan, you must be one of those young chicks - careful, the sacrifice starts before the game.
Keep up the good work - to read a steadfast fan like you on a daily basis is a good way to start the commute home.

Cursed? We have two 40+ yr old starters and Mike Hampton. Shame on us for expecting these guys to be healthy and/or at the top of their game. And Kotsay is coming off back surgery so we knew the risk there. Chipper is always an injury concern The Moylan issue was tough. Soriano is back but clearly not 100%. Most of these problems are self-inflicted.

The Braves aren’t “cursed”……. they simply play poor fundamentals, other than Chipper and McCann have no consistency on offense, decided rather than make “real” improvements they would invest in old worn out arms, injuries have destroyed the team, and have a laid back old-school manager.

Curse? Uhhhhh, Father Time is taking its toll folks. But, aside from that, it’s incomprehensible for a major league player to drop a pop-up! I know the baseball season is long, but dropping a “gimme” that turned sure victory against a first place team into a devastating loss will not be overcome. The season, realistically, began a downward spiral that game that puts this season to rest. RIP 2008 Atlanta Braves.

You can thank all of the Braves fans who were telling me the Cubs were done after the first inning last night.
I agreed that Lilly was terrible but the Cubs would fight back.
I think McCann is a great catcher but you just witnessed the starting catcher for the NL all-star team last night. First time ever for a rookie to start at catcher.

Cursed??? Cursed??? Take it from me, you don’t know the meaning of the word. Try following the Cubs for, oh, about a hundred years, and then you might get a sense of what being curesed actually feels like.

The JJ sprain is unfortunate as was the Diaz injury but it happens.
Two 40 something starters at the top of your rotation - good luck with that. Hampton (nuff said).
I am sure the Vegas odds on Kotsay going down before the All Star break where quite good.
A pen full of rookies and a questionable closer in Soriano who had arm issues pre-Braves and never had a full season under his belt as the closer.
So individually these events are not shocking. If you believe in bad luck then that could explain everything going sour at one time.

We’re definetly going 0-10 on this road trip. Then the homestand will collapse and you’ll see the Braves at the bottom of the standings. Start preparing for next year. If the Cubs have been terrible for the past 100 years and still have die-hard fans..why can’t the Braves now??

Jurrjens is 22. Lerew is 25. Chuck James is 26. Soriano is 28. Moylan is 29. Gonzalez is 30. Carlyle is 30. Gotay is 25. Infante is 30. Prado is 24. Diaz is 30. Kotsay is 32.
What about all of their injuries?

Yes, the Braves are cursed for having that wooden totem-pole of a manager, Bobby Cox. When you have wasted so many opportunities to win, year after year, you deserve to be cursed. The curse will not be removed until Cox is sacrificed for the good of intelligent baseball.

Hey CubbyDad - let’s compare and see who the best catcher in the NL is:
Soto .281 BA 11 HR 42 RBI 25 Runs .371 OPS
McCann .305 BA 12 HR 38 RBI 30 Runs .384 OPS
So tell me who’s the better NL catcher again?

Stylin,
You’re a moron. It was ONE OUT in ONE GAME in a 162 game season. Did you even watch that game? I doubt it. If you did you would have seen a lot more than that ONE PLAY to blame for that loss. What about the TWO WALKS with 2 outs just before that? Without those base runners the run could not have scored. After that inning that game was still tied. The Braves had another chance to win it. After Kelly Johnson doubled with 1 out and Chipper was intentionally walked (as usual), Teixeira struck out (as usual) and Francoeur popped up to 1st. What about the 9!!!! base runners stranded by Francoeur in that game? What about the 13!!! base runners stranded by the team in that game?

How about a huge pregame bonfire (in a safe location, of course) of those awful new blue road jerseys? Maybe that would be an appropriate cleansing ritual, given the Braves’ abysmal record in those “let’s see if we can get fans to buy yet another new jersey design” gimmicks.
Maybe throw Kelly Johnson’s glove on top once the blaze really gets going … (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

CubbyDad, McCann is the best catcher in the NL, but Soto has benefited from Cub fans flooding the votes. And the Cubs will most likely fail again this year, as any team that is consistently called a baby name (“Cubbies”? C’mon…) deserves to be cursed. You don’t see us calling the Braves the “Bravies”, or White Sox fans calling their team the “Soxies”, do you? Maybe if you Cub fans grow up and stop using such a baby name, your team might actually have a chance.

Sorry guys this is what we asked for in last winter and thats what we got right now. Braves owner don’t care about the quality of games or players. They go and since cheap a* burgain players to stick it in line up and hoping something miracle would happen. Ex.recently singed AAA loser pitcher from Padres. I have seen this drama year after year. We should STOP going to games like Florida Marlins, this will send a clear message to owner & organization that we “the Braves fans” are serious about quality and production of our Braves Team.

I was at spring training this year excited about the Braves season starting and thought we would be in the thick of things as far as the division race. Sure we have been hit with the injury bug but also we have too many players that are awful in the clutch— meaning late inning hitting and relief pitching. Namely the players that are killing us are Frenchie,Acosta,Boyer,K Johnson, TEX, None of these guys can come though when the game is on the line. Think about the last time any of the above helped us to win a game.

No curse just bad upper managment decisions. The Glavine signing was not worth a 1st round pick in this years draft. Where are all the minor league prospects that are suppose to lead the Braves into the ’10s? What happen to one of the best scouting departments in baseball. Part of the blame has to go to AOL, leaving this team in flux.

You take Chipper, McCain and Tex out of the starting lineup and you’re looking at a real good AAA team. This team is done for the season. If the game is close tonight through 6, go ahead Cox and bring in Acosta again for two in a row. This guy should be at Rome to see if he could get through an inning without a run.

The only way to get rid of this curse is to bring back Chief Nakahoma’s tepee.. Ya know, the one they yanked out of Fulton County Stadium to fill more seats? And the new “chief” will be none other than Bobby Cox. Thats the only way I see getting him out of the dugout.

There is a curse. It is a front office curse. When management goes into a season with two starters over 40 and a third more than injury-prone then tells the fans that the team will compete?
The only real injury here is one between the ears of the people who put this team together.
Remember that this is a commodity for sale. The ownership is much more inclined in buttering up the bottom line than the fans.

I wish TP could get in the heads of Blanco, Anderson, Johnson, Miller, Infante, Diaz and of couse the biggest one of all Francoeur, why do you try and uppercut everything? Hit to the opposite field and drive it not trying to hit everyball out of the stadium. A base hit to left or right center will move base runners two bases and give the Braves a better chance to score.
I wish a trade could be made for a clutch hitting left fielder and someone with some power.
The Braves I believe also need to make a trade for a starting pitcher like Millwood.
With all the insuries I bet the Braves wish they had not traded Tyler Yates

Both Glavine and Smoltz are HOF bound; but, they are in their athletic decline and are not going to go 7 innings. Glavine, of course, could have had an extra win if he had run support;alas,no runs no wins. Soriano and Gonzalez were both damaged goods when we got them; the other relievers, are a mixed bag of average arms who have been overused and abused in an effort to find an “innings eater.” Jurrjens and Reyes, of the starting staff, are the only ones who have shown talent and perseverence but it’s not enough when certain hitters prefer to hit homeruns rather than thinking of getting a hit to the opposite field to bring in the guy standing on 3rd base ( and with no one out!). I think that when the season officially ends you might see Pendleton among the ones to be gone.

as for the curse, some of it is the braves own fault. but everything that could go wrong has and more. we had so much sp depth at one point… now we cant field a 5 man rotation… im all for bringing up morton and hanson and letting them take their knocks this yr and go after another run next year. (and yes that means I am open to trading players for young guys and retooling… keep chipper, jurrjens, mccann… everyone else is fair game (and if we can sign tex long term keep him too))

Cubsdad you are a homer if you think Sota is a better catcher than McCann. Just look up the stats it’s not even an argument.
As for comparisons of Chicago and Atlanta, didn’t Chicago have something like 47 murders in two weeks earlier this year? It’s not like Chicago is New York, Boston, or Seattle in terms of great cities. And the reason there is a Cubs bar in Atlanta is because of all the transplants. Why does everyone move to Atlanta if it sucks so bad?

Let’s tell the truth about this rotation:
” Bulldog ” Mike Hampton has not pitched 200 innings sine 2001. and has been a no-show for the last two years. Mike Hampton needs to go away and stop stealing money. ( Sorry Buck Belue - the truth hurts)
John Smoltz fell and hurt his shoulder last May of 2007 and then was rewarded with a 14 million dollar contract. Smoltz needs to go away and stop stealing money.
Hometown Discount Tom Glavine has an era of 4.85 and struggles to get 15 outs a start. Glavine needs to go away and stop stealing money

The Braves need to lose bad one season and this just could be the year. Its been so long since we have sucked that we forget what those old Fulton County Stadium / Dale Murphy days were like. Braves fans have been spoiled and these past 3 so so years is just enough to not make major changes. So all the Bobby Ball haters (Im number one on that list) be happy we are losing. It can only lead to the changes we want. Im even hoping its so bad Cox decides to pass on 2009 season.
Bobby is down and you can see it and guess what… you can see it in his players also. Funny what one dropped pop up can do to a season. Right Kelly? I see Atlanta coming back from this road trip double digits out of first place. Im sure someone out there knows when the last time that was. I dont and could care less.
