Braves can’t catch a break in standings
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I think I speak for most Braves fans when I say that I thoroughly enjoyed that homestand. A four-game sweep of the hated Mets, a series win over the contending A’s and a split with the NL West-leading Diamondbacks made for an 8-3 stretch that featured some great baseball.
Jorge Campillo is a godsend, the bullpen has more than held down the fort, and with the exception of only a couple of games, the bats have been phenomenal. I’ll say it for what seems like the millionth time this season: Here’s hoping they can carry that momentum on the road. It’s the Brewers (24-27) and Reds (23-28), for cryin’ out loud.
The strange thing is, while the Braves were putting together this impressive homestand, the Marlins were sweeping the D’backs and taking two of three from the Giants to maintain their 2 1/2-game lead in the NL East. What the heck does Fredi Gonzalez have going on down there?
I’m sure all of us predicted that two months into the season, the Marlins would be the team everyone was chasing, right?
Outside of the five games against the Braves (the Fish have the edge so far, 3-2), I haven’t seen much of the Marlins. Anybody out there watch them more often? Any insight to offer on how strong they really are and if they can keep this up?
With the benefit of seeing the first two months, here’s a chance to revise our season predictions. I’m predicting the Braves and Phillies will be in it for the long haul, with the Marlins fading a bit and the Mets making a charge at some point but falling short. How do you see the NL East race playing out?

It’s hard to believe the marlins are where they are now… I think they will be in it until the pressure sets in on them.
The mets are just plain old. I see them barely being a .500 team.
Phillies I haven’t watched them all that much. Isn’t thier biggest issue pitching?
Braves Lets go .500 on the road the rest of the way and keep up this home tear and this division is ours.

The Marlins scare me because they are young and no one gives them credit. That includes their few fans also. History has proven that if a team is given no respect it can feed off of this and motivate players to prove they can win. Just can’t see the Phillies winning a 2nd straight division tile and the Mets, I think, the Mets made a mistake keeping Randolph as the manager. If that team does not come through and win this year, it is on the verge of falling apart completely.
With that being said I do think the Braves will pull out the N.L. East in the long haul. Another starter may be needed down the stretch though. Hudson and Jurrjens are solid. If Jorge Campillo keeps it up and Glavine’s health holds this staff possibly could be enough; however, with the talent the Braves have another acquired starter could push this into an elite team above the rest. As a Braves fan I do not want to have to depend on Jo-Jo and, James or Carlyle to carry us into the playoffs much less start a playoff game.

The Marlins have a +15 run differential. Their 245 runs scored ranks 6th in the NL; their 230 runs allowed ranks 7th.
The Braves have a +50 run differential. Their 246 runs scored ranks 5th in the NL; their 196 runs allowed ranks 1st.
The Phillies have a +48 run differential. Their 280 runs scored ranks 2nd in the NL (though, remember, they scored 20 runs yesterday); their 232 runs allowed ranks 8th.
The Mets have a +1 run differential. Their 231 runs scored ranks 10th in the NL; their 230 runs allowed ranks 6th.
As for what they’re doing right…I don’t really know. Their offense is solid, but doesn’t seem to be great — they’re 8th in hits, 7th in batting average and OBP, and 10th in steals. However, it must be that they’re just crushing the ball — they’re 2nd in home runs and slugging, and they’re 3rd in triples. They’re also 2nd in strikeouts, too, though.
Their pitching looks just okay — only one of their starters has an ERA below 4.00 (Scott Olsen, with 3.38). Their staff ERA of 4.18 is 8th in the NL, and this staff doesn’t strike out a whole lot — they’re 14th overall in the league. Their starters have a 4.91 ERA while relievers have a 3.12 (so there is a strong point). Starters are averaging 5.3 IP/game.

The Marlins have a history of exceeding expectations and playing pretty well after their many payroll purges —— which probably means their management has always been good at getting a good return for all the high priced players they regularly jettison. They would be a scary team if they regularly had a decent payroll and could keep their rising star players. They sure make the inefficient Mets look inept, that’s for sure.
With that being said though, I don’t see any way that young team can hang for the entire season. Leading the division in May ain’t the same as leading it in September. There’s lot of baseball left and the summer grind hasn’t even set in yet….that’s when the true playoff caliber teams will rise to the top. I still think it’s Braves, Phillies, and yes the Mets too fighting it out for the division. The Braves are steadily improving and I think we have a good chance of taking it this year.

The road woes can be blamed on a couple of things 1.) just plain bad luck…..lots of those losses were one run games where things would have been different if the ball had just bounced a little different. It’s not like we were getting blown out. 2.) facing an unusual amount of left handed pitching on the road with some of our best right handed hitters…Tex (batting Rh), Francoeur, Diaz, etc. slumping….Hopefully that is starting to come around.
I think the home/road disperity will start evening out and they will be OK.

Lets not “worried” about other team !!
The Bravo should stay focused on playing good baseball like they did on the homestand. Avoid defensive errors and make sure offense work more on getting high pitch count from opposite pitcher … I beleive we have a good enough team that can compete with anyone.
If we do that and we still loose?? tip the cap to them. Then look forward to next game.
GO BRAVES !!

I live in South Florida and have seen the Marlins play around 5 or 6 times in addition to their series with the Bravos. They are simply mashing the ball right now. Uggla is hitting like Chipper and Lance Berkman and Hanley Ramirez is Hanley Ramirez.
Gregg, the closer, looks vulnerable to me and I do not think that Olson will continue to pitch at this high of a level.
In my opinion, as teams get more used to them after playing them a few more times, they will falter.

Jeff321, I love “fans” like you, you are soooo optimistic! Bobby Cox just signed for another year…YEAH! Get used to it, Jeff! The Marlins are good, young talent. They scare me also. And I agree that the Braves need only to worry about the Braves. Now, can TP stop Frenchy from swinging at the first pitch?? All of the NL and maybe AL knows this!

It’s hard to believe that Chop Chick is actually watching baseball with the sex and the city movie out right now. But she’s right the braves are starting to come together, and how bout the braves resigning my boy BC what’s your take on that Chick, didn’t you want him fired a month ago. The braves “got this” road trip, they will win both series I believe pretty easily. And as far as the Marlins, they’re tough but we’ll see how tough they are mid August; remember people baseball is a Marathon Not a Sprint. I have to keep reminding Chop Chick of this, think about it this way chick: It’s not a two day sale at Macy’s it’s a season long sale that lasts 162 days. Point is it’s a little to early to be worried about anyone right now, lets just sit back and enjoy the braves play some pretty good baseball..chow chick

I think the Braves are in the best shape right now. The Marlins are young and I feel like they will fade out. The Mets are in trouble b/c they can’t play together, to much finger pointing. THe Phillies will hang with the Braves I think, but the edge goes to the Braves because of the bullpen. THe starting rotations are pretty even, but the Braves bullpen looks liek it will be very deep with 5 people that can close.
The next month will go a long way to decide how the Braves go. We play 48 games in 51 days, that’s a lot of ball.

It is way too early in the season to get too caught up in watching the standings. Basically, everybody is still in the race. The Braves just need to worry about playing good baseball. If they do that, everything else will take care of itself. I personally believe it will come down to the Phillies and the Braves. The Mets may get things straightened out and the Marlins may suprise us all, but right now the Phillies are the team the worries me the most.

Bravesfan79, the Marlins are now beating up on the Melts (up 1-0 in a three-game set); they beat up on the Giants over the weekend. It’ll be interesting to see what they do in Philly this coming weekend.

Braves are a $100 million team with .500 written all over it. Way too many holes in the rotation to do much better. When the league sees Campillo the second time around, he’ll be exposed as the journeyman he is. And Mr. Glavine might actually earn $1 million per win; it’s great work, I suppose, if you can find it, but we would have been so much better with $8 million in gold bullion, and a young starter learning on the job.

As a Marlins fan first and Braves fan second, I would love to see both teams go into the postseason. The Marlins are the only team to never win a division but win the world series twice! Watch out for them if they make it to the playoffs. They are young, talented and hungry to prove themselves and be successful. Go Fish and go Bravos! Im thoroughly enjoying this season so far!!!!!

Based on season-to-date, if the Braves had even split on the road, they’d be leading the standings by far. A lot rests on this road trip — against cellar-dwellers, too. If they can’t bring up the road average, they’re through.

I am repeatedly amazed at the stupidity of so many that refuse to acknowledge the genius that is Bobby Cox. How can you be so foolish as to make a ridiculous comment about Bobby being anything but great for the Braves and the city of Atlanta? Being 4th on the all time list of managerial wins has to count for something!

No, Marlins will NOT fade away. These young talents will get better as they play more games. They are learning how to play and win games. It will be up to Braves to keep them down and low with “MELTS”. However we will get good sense of Marlins after Melts and Phillies series. I agree we do need another solid starter to spark our team. I hope it was just a bad day for Tommy on Sunday but that many walks in a game, smolty may never pitch again for us. LOL, GO Braves!

JD, I’ve given up arguing with the Bobby Cox bashers. I reckon they think they know more than the overwhelming view among the many players, rival managers, rival front office personnel, etc. (you know people that actually know something about baseball)— who always give Bobby the credit for being the extraordinary manager he is. The bashers are entitled to their opinion….no matter how wrong it is. We will miss him greatly when he’s gone.

The Marlins WILL fade out. The Phillies will fight to the end but LOSE to the surging Braves who destroy all rivals in September. The Mets will return to their rightful place in the cellar of the NL East where they will be defecated upon by their rivals and laughed at by little children. The Nats will be disbanded for sucking.

Jim, I just don’t get it. It’s infuriating! How can people possibly discredit all the success that he’s had. There is no other franchise in sports that has experienced as much success as the Braves and it seems that now more than ever people continously gripe and complain about what’s not going right. I think there’s a lot going right. I think our organization is on the right path. I think we have a lot to be proud of. I love the city of Atlanta with every beat of my heart, but a portion of our fans are so spoiled that they cannot see how blessed we are.

In the NL East, to be painfully honest, the Marlins and Phils simply have more talent and are better coached. The Braves can turn things around but it’s going to require Chipper staying healthy and hot, Tex starting to finally get going, and improvements in the starting pitching— I’m not convinced the current crop of starters can take us to the division title. The bullpen when be loaded… let’s trade for a quality starter.

ERA doesn’t tell the whole story my friend particularly now since Smoltz is not part of that equation. What’s the team ERA w/o Smoltz?
I like Huddy, Campillo, and Jurjens. The rest is a real question mark. Glavine is a damn joke…….. the money he’s getting paid and how many times has he gone more than 5 or 6 innings this season?

Bobby Cox has one World Championship to his credit. The man has cost this organization about 4 to 6 more of those Championships.
That is his true legacy, as the proverbial ONE TRICK PONY
I defended the man for twenty plus years, but no more will I turn a blind eye to his past bumblings as both the Braves GM and manager. When and if Cox gets ring number two, I’ll shut up.
The man is one of the best managers of all time, he is also the most oversold. Cox is headed for the Hall of Fame and deservedly so, he knows how to handle talent and his players. The man has also been out managed repeatedly in the playoffs.
Bobby Cox is 66-66 in the post season, he has lost 4 out of 5 World Series appearances, Cox is 4-4 in League Championship Series, 11-14 in all post season series and holds the distinction of actually losing back to back World Series in 1991-1992.
All in all, Hall of fame and vastly overrated.

I have supported Bobby Cox for years. He has been a great manager - a player’s manager - only sometimes, being a player’s manager can have a negative impact on the team. Bobby has always balanced it well until last year and I see a lot of it this year.
Bobby has earned the right to manage the team any way he wants. We might not agree with his moves, but he is the Manager! What he says goes and that’s the way it should be - he has earned it!

Coach said, “Bobby Cox has one World Championship to his credit. The man has cost this organization about 4 to 6 more of those Championships.”
I am sure you would have won at least 6 World Series if you had been the manager. All those major league players, coaches, and front office personnel are such idiots that they do not realize how terrible a job Bobby Cox has done. It simply amazes me that time after time, they rate Bobby Cox as the best manager in the game. I remember the poll last year among current major league managers that rated Bobby the best. What morons! Doesn’t everyone know that you Coach would make much more capable manager than Bobby Cox! What is it that makes all of these people who make their living day-in and day-out in major league baseball have such have such an inflated view of Bobby Cox? It could not possibly be that they know more than you!
On second thought…I think I will stick with Bobby.

To Coach:
Oh, boohoo hoo. If you don’t like it don’t watch the Braves because as far as I’m concerned, Bobby Cox is the Braves. One world series; okay, I can see your frustration, but what about the 14 straight division titles he’s led this team too? Doesn’t that count for anything? Oh, and by the way, it’s not his fault that he can’t win in the postseason; it’s the players responsibility to hit up to their potential. When they underperform in the playoffs it’s not Bobby’s fault.
About topic at hand:
I think the Marlins will fade after the all-star break because that is when the division races REALLY heat up all over baseball. We’ll see then if if Florida can handle the pressure. However, they have surprised me so far, but I still don’t think they’re for real.
It’s going to go down to the Phillies and Braves when all is said and done. IMO, the Mets are done, I think the Braves put the dagger in their hearts when they swept them in Atlanta because since then the Mets have literally fallen apart.
Our rotation will be fine; Hudson, Jurrjens and Glavine will be okay. They’ll have bad starts every now and then but who doesn’t? It’s Campillo and Reyes I’m worried about. If they can chip in and give this team chances to win each time they’re on the mound until the season is up (if no starter is acquired at the trade deadline or before) than I’m okay with it.
The main thing I’m worried about is we have to start playing better on the road. We can’t keep relying on home games to get us back in the race, because sooner or later we’ll more than likely struggle at home and we need to win on the road to help with that.

The first month and the early part of May, I honestly started to think that they weren’t going to matter to much BUT NOW…..I think they may just have something to say about the NL East and very well could be in the 2008 WS.

Pin another loss to Bobby’s long list of head-scratching inane decision making.
Our bullpen has been the absolute best in the NL. Hudson was over 115 pitches, and has a history of quickly folding once he hits hits that pitch point. But regardless Bobby thought it was right to let him lead off the 8th in a 1 run game and consequently go out an pitch the 9th.
Thanks, Bobby….once again.

I was surprised and getting annoyed to see him with 2 outs in the 7th. He seemed out of gas. But then when he led off the 8th inning in a 1 run game! INSANITY! I realize being 2-13 in 1 run games is some bad luck, but also some bonehead baseball…thanks bobby! It’s frustrating looking at the box score and seeing 3 straight 1’s in the 7,8,9 for the brew crew to steal the game. Pitiful.
