Things to love about this homestand, take 2

The Braves look as good at home as they’ve looked bad on the road. And that’s pretty darn good.

Some of our blogs were down yesterday (including this one), and I apologize to anyone who might have wanted to post and didn’t get to. We can continue yesterday’s theme so you’ll have the chance to weigh in on it.

The basic idea is, what have you liked most about this homestand? Here are the things that came to mind from Tuesday’s doubleheader, and I’ll add the following from last night:

• Jeff Francoeur returned from his game on the bench to come within a double of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

• Jair Jurrjens contributed yet another quality start, allowing only one earned run in seven innings to notch his fifth win of the year.

• Mark Teixeira has his average up to .274, thanks to a three-hit night that continued his hot streak. He also drove in three runs and scored twice.

• Brian McCann is swinging a hot bat, too, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. He also hit his team-leading 18th double of the season.

• It bears repeating from yesterday that this is all happening against a Mets team that looks to be falling apart at the seams.

My only problem with last night’s win is that Bobby Cox felt compelled to bring Jeff Bennett in to pitch the eighth inning of an 11-2 game after having him warm up in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader and pitch an inning in game two. He’s thrown 37 innings in 21 appearances, not counting the times he’s warmed up but wasn’t used. Anybody want to start a pool on when the dependable spot-starter/long reliever will need to make his appointment to see Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham?

Please don’t mention Dr. Andrews in a blog! It could curse the pitching staff!!!

I think Bobby will happily burn out young arms he sees no future for. Bennett is in the same position as the #3 starter on a high school baseball team … the coach will leave you in when you are getting shelled and let your arm fall off because you don’t matter.

CC - glad to have the new blog. I do agree that the Braves are not good on the road, but I see that changing as the pitching rights itself and the hitters use the confidence they are getting from hitting here at home. I see a .500 season on the road for the season, and that will be good enough to either win the East or the Wild Card. When I think of Bobby Cox as a manager, I think of all the juggling he has done (and has been given the years to do that) with the injuries and changes in personnel over the years. When injuries occur, he works his bench into situations that uses their best talents for the benefit of the team, and winning. It was said by someone recently that some managers would have overused the “Big Three” and they would not still be pitching. Though there have been some slowdowns, esp. with Smoltzie’s injuries lately, there are very few dominant pitchers of their era still going as strong and giving the innings these guys are. I am looking forward to a good season and a chance at the post-season for this pretty young team with just the right blend of veterans. Keep up the good work CC! Enjoy your comments much more than any entry I may do in reply.

How good Braves at home would be proven this weekend. If we can take 3 or at least 2 out of 4 from Diamondbacks. I will certainly believe that darn Braves are unshaken at home. So far we have played against crapy or teams that were not having good at a time. Good to see Tex’s bat is coming alive . Great piece of hitting and pitching last night. Go Braves!

6 hit batsmaen in 3 games and your main man gets nailed and no retaliation….. Guys it is alright to bow up every now and then, that type of wimpiness costs us every post season, need someone to man up and hopefully Huddy sends some chin music to Reyes today

Coach K - I could not agree more. The first batter, after Chipper got hit, should have been shaking in his cleats when he got to the plate. We should have drilled him on the first pitch.

I have never seen a player (Schoeneweis) get booed so much at the Ted. That was fun.

Nice win! Go Braves!

“6 hit batsmen in 3 games and your main man gets nailed and no retaliation”

Think about it Coach K, ever think that Bobby might have ordered “no retaliation” against a team that is obviously looking for ANY reason to get fired up and reverse their fortunes? I would say yes. Wait until the next time you play the Mets, and then vent your frustrations. Until then, let the Mutts keep riding this wave of horrible baseball

This team is “”theeese”“” close to really catching fire. This is not as bad a road team as everyone seems to think here. THEY HAVE LOST 11 one-run GAMES on the road. 0-11 in one-run road games. If they had split these games they would have the best record in baseball. This will all even out. All we need is a little more timely hitting on the road. Also remember that during these road trips it was like 40 degrees every night. Ah, well planned spring schedules by MLB.

The hitters are heating up. The next road trip we go 4-2 and everyone will be smiling.

I agree with coach k. Several hit batters, a couple of questionable take-out slides and no retaliation. Where is Chris Hammond when you need him?

Every body knows that Bobby Cox is too class to demand someone to get plunked—-that has to be a pitcher’s deal to do it-the last time I saw a brave go after a hitter was in 1991 when Glavine threw at Dale Murphy after the phillies pitchers had gone after our guys—right now we can’t afford a suspension of any sort-The Mets may have been trying to fire their team up by starting something-but Cox just keeps the fire down by winning

Good points about the lack of retaliation … I was wondering last night if they made the decision to wait so it wouldn’t be obvious. Who thinks Huddy might “let one slip” tonight?

By bravo kid

May 22, 2008 2:44 PM | Link to this

Roger, I seem to recall Huddy hitting Alfonzo Soriano with the first pith of the game last season and then Ted Lilly getting tossed for attempting to hit us in the bottom half of the inning. I agree that there was no reason to anger the Mets when they are playing poorly. Instead, Tex ripped one down the line for 3 more runs. I’ll take that over hitting a batter and risking supensions any day.

This Braves team is better than their stats (as of May22). We have just withness the beginning of the turn around to the top.

Hope we can sustain it.

For me, I’m not too concern with our pitching staff, but more of how our batters approach each AB.

I hope that some vet like Chipper and TP can keep our guys calm, focused and consistently make the opposing pitcher throw strike. Also keep working up their pitches. Do this, I’m sure the Bravo will be playing deep in October

GO BRAVES !!!

Andruw who? I hope Hudson drills someone tonight! Mutts pitchers and Ryan Church have had their ugly, desperation tactics taken in stride by a CLASS team. But enough is enough.

There is some wise advice from Sun Tzu that is very appropriate at this time as we discuss retaliation for the MUTTS antics : “When your enemy is Self-destructing, Don’t interfere”

The time will come for paybacks. Right now the MUTTS are a desperate team doing anything they can to keep thier season from collapsing. It would be stupid for the Braves to do anything to fire them up.

Let the MUTTS keep showing themselves for the classless cheap shot artists they are. The best revenge is to just keep playing hard and hammer the crap out of them.

I was almost giddy last night at the thought of Cox ordering retaliation tonight. Just be smart about it - we don’t want to put Reyes on with nobody out, but the first time Beltran comes up with two outs and empty bases, send one toward his ribcage.

Loved watching that game last night — one of the few not to cause an ulcer! As an added bonus, I picked up a new favorite saying when Jon Sciambi said he “didn’t want to drive the happy bus into Negativetown” (about cautious optimism when our pitching staff — Smoltz, Soriano, Gonzalez — returns from the DL). Loved that! :-)

P.S. Calling those NY cretins the “Mutts” is such an insult to real mutts, which I actually love and respect. Just as calling them “cretins” is an insult to residents of Crete, I suppose… :-)

How many of you remember when Terry Pendleton walked off the field one game because Marvin Freeman did not retaliate. Deion Sanders had gotten plunked the inning before, and after the first pitch of the first batter, TP walked off the field. He said after the game, whether you like your teammates or not (a jab at Deion), you still need to respect and stand up for your team-mates.

According to ESPN, Church is supposed to start tonight……..

I guarantee you in the 7th or 8th inning, justice will prevail………..

I agree, you don’t want to wake the Mets up, but by the last 3 innings, it won’t matter…….

Forgot to post a link to an interesting story on ESPN.COM this morning….

There is DEFINATELY trouble in Metsland……

A sweep by the Braves should do it.

Mike S…Love the Sun Tzu quote. That was the best comment and I totally agree with you. Why kick them when they’re down when they’ve put themselves there? Let’s just get our outs and hits and sweep them on they’re way!

Amy…How ‘bout just calling them the “Melts”?

By Amy

Brad: “Melts” works for me — and has a nice gooey messy visual image, like that old ’70s/’80s PSA with the clay guy who melted in his easy chair because he never exercised! The self-destruction-under-heat-of-pressure connotation is perfect, too. :-)

Love it! The NY Melts. I too think it was wise not to retaliate now. It’s a long season and there will be plenty of oppotunities. The guy who crashed Yunel can run, but he can’t hide.

METS crash on the road. SANTANA’s long-term arm injury my friend told me about appears to be showing up early. Maybe most of baseball (YANKEES)knew something OMAR MINAYA ignored. I mean, if there’s a rat (permanent damage to SANTANA’s arm), he HAD to know.

It really says somethign that we are talking about the ‘pitching righting itself’ on a team with one of the best ERA’s in the bigs. THat is somewhat. .nice. .

Jeff Bennett has already undergone T.J. surgery back in 2006.

Did you know that Peter Moylan appeared in 80 games last season before having T.J surgery on May 9th and he will be out for the rest of 2008.

That’s the price relief pitchers pay for pitching so frequently. Some guys just break down.

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Sea of Glass(Jinhae) southkorea

Today I want to talk about Crazy Bobby Cox.

Now he is giving 70% chance of starting playing LF to head-up man Gregor Blanco, and giving 30% chance of starting playing LF to consecutive years .AVG over .330 and tied with Derek Jeter only.

And check the record of Mattew Diaz in 2006&2007, his vs righty is better than vs lefty.

In southkorean baseball league, Buddy Charyle knows well I think, almost starting player got low .slg.^*^

Theseday just contact hitter like Gregor Blanco only doing starting job, in 1980s status was different. And theseday, owner of baseball club doing request Babylon for calling slaves to stadium in my sixth-sense. ^*^
