Which youngster should Braves bring up?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
To quote my favorite movie, “Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains.” The way things have been going for the Braves on the road, a rainout in Pittsburgh yesterday wasn’t the worst thing that could have happened.
But it does wreak havoc on the rotation. With Jair Jurrjens pushed back to the first game of today’s doubleheader (provided they get these games in, since showers are predicted throughout the day), none of the regular starters would have enough rest by Friday’s game against the A’s at Turner Field.
There’s talk that they’ll bring up Charlie Morton, who’s been drawing raves from richbrave on this blog. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in six starts this season and has allowed just one earned run in 14 1/3 innings in his past two.
And Morton isn’t the only minor leaguer getting noticed. Thomas Hanson, who had a 0.90 ERA in seven starts with Myrtle Beach, was promoted to the Double A club in Mississippi over the weekend. Wonder how long he’ll stay there?
With the big-league starters and relievers going through a difficult time, which of the young guns — Morton, Hanson, Phil Stockman ( 0.84 ERA in 12 appearances) or someone else — would you most like to see in Atlanta? Or do you think the Braves should exercise some patience and let these guys develop a bit more?
I would love to see Morton and Stockman get a shot soon, but I hope they don’t bring Hanson up too quickly.
On an unrelated topic, my favorite movie is obviously “Bull Durham”; what’s your favorite baseball classic?

I believe Stockman should be up here now, there is nothing more he can prove in AAA. Hanson still needs awhile in the minors, and will probably be roughed up alittle at AA. As for Morton, bring him up, lets see what he can do…

BULL DURHAM hands down. The reality was exquisite. And it launched two careers. Even had MAX PATKIN the baseball clown whom I used to see on occasion at old Parker Field here in Richmond. Can’t remember his predecessor, whom I liked even better.
Whether CHARLIE MORTON is ready or not depends on his mental take. No question he’s got the tools to be successful now. Ready if needed, but I gotta’ hesitate because of his mental and emotional approach to things. Braves management will know when the time is right. And Atlanta fans, don’t pin a season on this guy and then hang him high if he’s not successful. He’s a slow and steady guy, and a good guy. Cut him some slack. He’ll do the job for you.
PHIL STOCKMAN probably could not start, but he’s ready in relief, and his attitude is great. Send him whenever, he’s good to go.
TOMMY HANSON I have not seen, but if you’ve followed CHOP CHICK’S blog you know of VaRoadRunner’s post about one start he had in Lynchburg(Va.) where he was all over the place. Based on that one eyewitness account, I think NO, stay in the minors and Richmond by the end of the season-maybe.

I think the ChopChick is right on. We already know what we’re to get out of Chuck James (a dicey, brittle 5 innings), know what Bennett has to offer (about 4 maybe innings), so why not throw the youth corps into the mix to see what they can show?
If they’re not ready, so be it, but what if even one of them are?

Please do something. This team is very frustrating, and to get some young blood in the pitching staff would work wonders on the TV audience. We must have the oldest staff in the world.

Has anyone noticed Matt Young??? He took over the CF spot when Schafer got suspended. Where are we going to play this kid? Very good average, hardly any pop in the bat, but looks great! Picture Ryan Freel

Craig Norton can play 1st - give Tex a rest. We might see it today with a doubleheader.
I saw Tommy Hanson pitch in M.B. (good thing, too cuz he’s already gone).
He was a man amongst boys - but it looks like he’s got a pretty straight fastball, ala Joey Devine, so let’s see what he can do at AA.

I think we should bring Morton up for a spot start to give him a taste of the big leagues. Unless he really wows us, Id likely send him back down. Especially if Jo-Jo’s blisters are good. I think that Morton could probably be a full time starter for us by mid-season if he continues to work well in AAA and Smoltzy is in the pen. I mean if we get Smoltz, Gonzalez, and Soriano in the pen, we only need a starter to go 6 innings.

Since almost none of us has seen any of them (I know Richbraves has seen 2 of them) there is very little point to debate this. Most of us are going completely on stats. I would guess that considering Hansen just got moved above single A that he could use more time. As for the other 2 I have no idea. Almost none of us has any idea. However, I would like to request no more Jojo Reyes. The dude blows. He can not pitch in the big leagues. He has done absolutely nothing and the Braves continue to give him chances. Enough with him.

Anyone who thinks we can have our starters going no more than 6 innings all season is delusional. Relief pitchers only go 1 inning (if that) nowadays! That means every pitcher will have 80 appearances by season’s end! So what we need are the 1-3 pitchers to go 7-9 innings if possible. Sure, they won’t do this all the time, but if you expect a pitcher to go no more than 6 then obviously they will pitch less than this on average. I don’t think it would work no matter how good our relievers are. That’s why every team needs GOOD starters.

The weather is reekoing havoc on this team it is poor mgmt and not teaching these guys the fundamentals always looking for the big inning instead of looking for 1 run at a time. Texeria needs to figure it out and sit Francouer he is average and not producing with men in scoring position, quit blaming pitching, Frank it is time to call out Bobby I am tired of not winning these 1 run games because this team is way better than this record, SHAKE UP TIME!!!!

“Field of Dreams” is good enough that I can ignore the incongruous yankee accent the South Carolina-born/bred, Ray Liotta-portrayed Shoeless Joe Jackson has.
“Bull Durham” is a stone classic. Lots of lived-in truth there — probably since the writer/director actually played minor league ball for awhile.
I really liked “Eight Men Out,” which doesn’t get mentioned a lot in these discussions. Much more accurate portrayal of Joe Jackson, if nothing else.
Most other baseball movies are disposable — “The Slugger’s Wife?” “Rookie of the Year?” Meh.

Major League is, if not the greatest baseball movie of all time, the funniest. It’s definitely one of the most quotable as well:
“C’mon Dorn, get in front of the dmn ball! Don’t give me this ‘ole’ bullsht”
“Too high? What does that mean, too high? - Who gives a sh*t, it’s gone”
“You may run like Hayes, but you hit like sh*t”
“That’s all we got, one goddmn hit” - “You can say goddamn on the air - Don’t worry, nobdody’s listening anyway”
“Jesus, I like him very much, but he no help with curve ball” - You trying to say Jesus Christ can’t hit a curve ball”
“Is very bad to steal Jobu’s rum. Is very bad.”

WTH!? Now Texeira’s hurt? We must have the most fragile team in all of MLB. This is ridiculous. I’d like to go just one freaking week without one of our players having a boo-boo.
And now we’re down 3-0 and looking at a possible sweep by the Pirates on the road. Arggh!

JoJo excelled here, but old habits(especially bad ones) are hard to break. GUY had him squared away even if he gave HANSON no credit-NO credit. That lasted one game, then reality sets in and you begin to fall back on old habits - BAD habits like the ones DAVID O’BRIEN alluded to. REYES has got the goods to succeed, but it’s the ten-cent head(BULL DURHAM) that needs work.

Tommy Hanson pitched awesome in Myrtle Beach and deserved the promotion to AA, but he’s not the only one getting the job done there. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have the best record in the Carolina League and lead the league in almost every pitching catagory. Most of these guys are a couple of years away but I think we have the making for Young Guns Part II.

Okay,
This may sound negative, however I believe we need this to happen in order to be respectful again in the future. I believe we need to break this team down from top to bottom and just start over. Look at the Marlins they are in first place and looking like they could be the team to beat in the division this year, plus they have won two WS titles to our one. Our team has too many old players on it. I love Glavine, Smoltz, Chipper, and Bobby; but I believe it is time for this team to turn the page and lets get to a new era of Braves baseball. Let’s face it, the Braves probably wont win 14 division titles in a row ever again, and if they do we are talking decades down the road. We are living too much in the 90s with Glavine, Smoltz, and Bobby. I hate to see that era end like everyone else, but I believe it is time to do so. Trade Tex, and let’s see if we can get some new blood in here for the future. I love the braves, and am not throwing in the towel, but to be the best team in baseball at home, and then a joke on the road is just wrong. Plus how can we go from winning six in a row to losing games in a row. If the Marlins can do it every few years why cant we?

If anybody thinks this team is better than mediocre, they must be smoking something. Also, they are the most fragile team I have ever seen in any sport. They would have to cancel the schedule if they were a football team because they couldn’t keep enough healthy body’s to play.

By Rico

Texeira had back spasms. He’s the 4th Brave this year that’s had that. KJ, Brayan Pena, Chipper were the other three.
I heard Joe Simpson and Boog talking about how the Braves don’t do the little things like move runners over, take more pitches, etc. I’ve been hearing that for years. Is it the players who just aren’t doing what they’re supposed to be doing or is it Bobby and Terry P that just don’t put a priority on that part of the game? Either the players aren’t listening or the coaches aren’t teaching. Either way, something has to change.

Braves lose! Braves lose! Braves lose! If there is a sure thing in sports right now, it’s the Braves losing on the road. How in the world do you have 6-7 hits 4-5 walks and 4 errors helping you and you can’t push across even one measly run?

Please do not give me the song and dance about “it is early; do not panic” This is awful. Out hit them 8-5 and they give you 4 errors and you lose 5-0. All of the “baby braves” have turned out to be one time flash in the pans. And how the worlds greatest manager can put up with this. And our GM does he have no inkling as to what is needed to better the team? GO GET STARTING PITCHING NOW !!! Trade whomever it takes to get it. Tex..overrated, Hoss… great until really needed, Frenchy… needs 2 years at Myrtle Beach, TP…a joke, Roger… a bigger joke, B Mac… listen to dad instead of TP, Omar… a waste of time, And what in heavens name will they do with John, Sorryanna, and Gonzo as the 3 closers? I suppose take another picture such as John, Tom and Greg. Sorry folks. I have been a staunch Braves fan since 1966 but this cast takes the cake. Bye.

I’m feeling ED’s frustration… but Hoss? C’mon ED, if you really have been a Braves fan since ‘66, you would know Chipper has done it all. Moved from position to position to suit the team, allow them to adjust his contract just to suit the team…. Yu cannot suggest we trade Chipper. TEX, Ok, he’s rented anyway. I agree, send them packing. Frenchy cannot control his testosterone and is too much like Andruw (I must pull it) Jones. Today, he was jammed for a hit and then he actually pulled one for a hit. McCann….wow - Teams need peole like Mac and he has improved everyting about his defense except throwing. I’d keep them all except TEX. Send him somewhere for pitching.

Thanks for your comments varoadrunner. I actually have been watching and pulling for the Braves since 1966. And I too recognize the good things that Chipper has done. I have defended him against all my siblings who keep saying ” he only does good when it is not needed.” But lately (Last 3 games) I have been swayed in my thinking. However, I am willing to stick with him a little longer thanks to your timely and intelligent remarks. But game 4 with the Pirates has not made me rethink my previous comments. Game 4 was just a tease.

I don’t know who is going to be called, but it should be done NOW!. Chuck is good only for 5 innings, after that the boms start falling down!!! This organization had the oportunity to bring an inning eater like Livan Hdez., but a genious in this blog call me idiot for that comment!!! (at this point I know who is the real idiot because Livan is 5-1 OK ). But if they have any pitching prospect it is the right time to test it. The other solution is two half-pitcher per game (Jo-JO and Carlyle the other duo Chuck and Bennet)

This is my first time on this blog. Usually post on DOB’s blog, but reading the comments here somehow make sense.
Richbrave I like how you follow the braves minor league system. I haven’t seen Hanson pitch yet, but thanks for saying his fastball is straight. That reminds me of Smoltz’s fastball for a long time too. Fast but straight. But bring him up anyway. If anything, he’ll have a season no worse than Chuck James.
I think we need to bring up a lot of these young pitchers this year. If nothing else, they can learn from Glavine and Smotlz before they’re gone. The rotation next year is going to be young and inexperienced, barring trade….so bring up the kids!

1 Chuck James = He can’t pitch for **. 2. Blaine Boyer = He can’t pitch for **. 3. Chris Resop = He can’t pitch for **. 4. Royce Ring = Yep, you guessed it.The pen makes so damn mad…I can’t see straight. I realize that ya can’t win’em all…BUT MY GOD, the Braves could definately have better pitchers in the pen than what they have especially that dip Boyer.

It’s a bit early in the season to start acting desperate. I still trust Cox’s decisions overall, especially in the development of players. Sure, nobody makes the right move every time, but he has an excellent track record. No matter what we as “back seat drivers” believe, there is a method to this madness. Shuerholz, Wren, and Cox regularly discuss the overall plan, the big picture for this team, and I believe we’ll see some moves around the All Star break. What and how many will be dictated by their record/standings. I would love to see new faces, but the right faces…some inviguration…some minor leaguers making it big with us this season, but not just as a trial and error deal. We definitely have the potential with this group. Many a manager would love to have this lineup. It’s just a matter of timing, of everyone coming together. We’ll see. On paper, this team looks dangerous to any opposing team. The ERA, the BA, the league low in batters striking out, and the lineup that features .300 hitters from top to bottom. They are potentially explosive on any given night. If and when they do click, they could reel off twenty straight wins (provided we leave C James out of the rotation). BTW, I was told C James might win the Cy Young this year, or was that the Cy Dung - as in elephant). A rotation of Hudson, Jurrgens, Glavine, Reyes, and whomever could provide the quality starts to reel off these wins. Bottom line, I will back Cox and these Braves no matter where they finish, but people you have to admit that they have not fielded a lineup with averages like these in quite a while. The power and speed may be lacking, but the ability to get on base and drive in runs is there. I think Coach Pendleton has some work on his hands turning these guys into consistent, productive hitters. And there is where some of the blame should rest…on he coaches. The outcomes are reflective of the work of McDowell,Pendleton, and the rest do. As for calling some more to work with, I think we should wait a little longer. There’s no rush, yet.

I love the braves and respect what Glavine,Smoltz have done for the braves!! It is time to bring up some younger pitchers or trade Texeira for some young pitching talent. The general manager needs to cut ties with Hampton and use the money for better players. Hey Chop Chick you married? If that’s really your picture you sure are cute. Ah it’s early but we need a number 2 starter who is not old. There are several out there and since they are not going to pay Tex he should be the bait to pull them in. Tex would be the new poster boy but they ain’t going to pay him 20 million a year to keep him. Hate to say it but i saw our real 1st baseman pop a homer in the 1st game yesterday. The natural to answer one question. We dont need pitching as much as we need Tex and Frenchy to try to earn their pay. If there’s a stud hitter down in the minors, that would help. Now I have a question, exactly WHO in hell hired you ?? I’m quite sure that you are in high school, am I right?

Top of the ninth Braves down two and the lead-off batter Escobar goes down swinging. Next batter Kotsay works a walk. Maybe Kotsay should be lead-off and Escobar back to #2 . Hopefully, Chip will pull it out with a homer right now.

Hi, I’m Seong-Ho,Yoon living in Sea of Glass(Jinhae) southkorea
Today I want to talk about Crazy Bobby Cox.
Now he is giving 70% chance of starting playing LF to head-up man Gregor Blanco, and giving 30% chance of starting playing LF to consecutive years .AVG over .330 and tied with Derek Jeter only.
Today If he would change Gregor Blanco to Matt Diaz Braves could win.
He is insane. Coward for old age. Do you want to live to over 100years old? Always Red-dragon Babylonian bully coward pleasantly.
“Baseball need 9players and one spy can fail game” but, now Bobby Cox making Braves devastated. Fire him!!!
May the force of Messiah be with you
