What will Smoltz’s legacy be?

John Smoltz’s 3,000th strikeout, which he notched in the third inning Tuesday after getting Felipe Lopez to swing at a 3-2 slider in the dirt, should seal the deal on his Cooperstown bust.

You can’t compare him to anyone else who’s played the game, because after starting for 12 years, he spent 3-1/2 seasons as one of the game’s most dominant closers then made a seamless transition back to starting, but that’s part of what makes him so special. (The closest comparison would be Dennis Eckersley, but Eck never returned from the ‘pen.) Any way you slice them, though, the numbers are certainly there.

Among the more impressive ones:

• Only Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling reached the 3,000 milestone in fewer innings than Smoltz.

• He holds Braves records for most wins (24) and most saves (55) in a season and franchise career records in saves (154) and strikeouts.

• He has 15 postseason wins.

All 15 of the non-active members of the 3,000-K club are in the Hall of Fame except Bert Blyleven, and the five who are still on the mound read like an induction program of the future: Johnson, Schilling, Martinez, Clemens and Smoltz’s old golfing buddy Greg Maddux. So my money’s definitely on Smoltz joining them.

Making all those accomplishments even more impressive is that he achieved them wearing one uniform, creating great memories for all of us along the way. My favorite has to be the image of him catching a leaping Greg Olsen after the final out of the ‘91 regular-season game that clinched the worst-to-first season, but I’m sure there are many, many more out there. What’s your favorite Smoltz moment? What will stand out for you at the end of his career?

I think when he was closing and how crazy Turner Field got when he was jogging out to the mound with Thunderstruck playing in the background. That was awesome. Also game 7, 1991 World Series, and if you saw that game that’s all I need to say about it.

The Smoltz/Olsen moment is one of my all time favorite Braves moments. After suffering as a Braves fan for so long, it was an amazing feeling. The emotions from 1991 will never be recaputured. That year was simply magic.

Congratulations Smoltz on a wonderful achievement!

P.S. Will, lose the all caps, okay? No need to shout. :)

I’ve been a Braves fan my entire life as long as I can ever remember. John Smoltz is one heck of an athlete, maybe one of the best I have ever seen in my lifetime. But, I won’t lie to you all, I don’t particularly like him. I am surely glad he is a Brave because he is so good, but I cannot stand to hear him talk because he is so full of himself and full of “other things”.

Anyways, congrats to Smoltzie. I’m glad you are a Brave and got your 3000th as a Brave. Keep it up.

On a side note, why is there no one at the stadium? This is pitiful! We need to put folks in the stands ASAP. I’ll be there all summer as soon as I get out of school.

GO BRAVES!!

John Smoltz is really just a big kid at heart, but the will of a champion is something he has always possessed. There is only one Schmoltzie—as Greg Olson called him. The rest of us know him as Smoltzie. How many times could he have hung it up because of injury? Or come back as half the pitcher he was in his prime? Or gone to another team? Those are the things that make him special. Not only overcoming adversity but remaining a top flight pitcher, and top flight human being.

CHOP CHICK:

Standout.? How about an entire career!! For me its the warm-fuzzy feel of knowing Smoltz is pitching tonight( that’s almost 20 years worth of tonights). We’ve got a great chance to win. Well not tonight, but he only gave up 1 in 7. Pretty dang good for a pitcher with those miles on that body. Really, Maddox and Spahn are the only others I’ve felt that way about. Hurrah for John. Go BRAVES. Didn’t listen to Richmond’s game tonight. Had to see Smoltzie set a milestone.

It is somehow fitting that on a night when Smoltz makes his mark, his team gets shut out. Since Smoltz demanded to come out of the bullpen or sign elsewhere, he has put himself before the team. As proof, just for a moment consider the long list of pretend closers the Braves have gone through to replace Smoltz in the bullpen. Anybody remember Dan Kolb? When Smoltz goes to the HOF, he should have “JS” on his jersey instead of “Braves”.

To me John Smoltz’s legacy is “HE’S SOLID”. He did the job no matter what he was called to do. Years and years of starting pitching, solid as a reliever, solid and strong as a CHRISTIAN leader and great all around person. Character, he has it. God Bless you John Smoltz.

I doubt he will make it on the first ballot. Not that he doesn’t deserve it (he does), but the dorks voting for the HOF have something against the Bravos. Look at Murphy. He is what every ball player should be. He represents what was and should be in baseball. But he hit a couple of homers shy of getting his ticket punched and played for a Braves team that basically was far from greatness. Same reason why you will see Bonds in the HOF before players like ol’ #3. They care about stats and turnstile #’s. To hell with character. I would like to see Smoltz, Glavine, and Maddux inducted on the same day. THAT would be a prideful day for the Braves. I just hope Chipper has a couple more of good years before he retires. Any more injury filled years and that will all he will be remembered for by the HOF. Congrats John. It has been a great 3k!!

Do you all remember a few years ago when Smoltzie’s shoulder was hurting all season, and he couldn’t throw over-handed? He had to side-arm it the whole season. And I think he went 17-3 that year. I also think that if he couldn’t throw right-handed, if the Braves needed him, he would have figured out a way to get it up there left-handed.

Smoltzie has been an inspiration to me for many years. He has been candid about problems with hids thought life. How many of us would do that publicly? He has been a model citizen and doen much for charities. He is self-confident, and with obvious good reason. But he has always given God the credit and has never seemed arrogant to me.

Someone said they love the feeling when they know Smoltzie is pitching. It almost always means the Braves will have a great chance to win the game. I agree.

I also agree that the most exciting thing in Braves history for me might have been the sight of Smoltzie entering the field from the bullpen. First the thunder on the board. Then he enters the field, walking at first, then breaking into a trot. Fans going wild, cheering, clapping, whistling, jumping up and down. The baseball version of the savior had arrived.

Many great players have come and gone for the Braves. John Smoltz is the greatest of them all for me.

Smoltz: The epitome of Class

My favorite Smoltz moment was in 1989. In the off season, he was doing one of those autograph tours that fans love and the players put up with. I stood in line for two hours and watched John be polite and respectful to each and every fan, He smiled, laughed and joked with everyone. He has done nothing since to cause me to lose respect for him. He is a true class act, and we are fortunate to have him spend his career with Atlanta. Love you John.

In this day of HGH and steroids it is refreshing to see an athlete be successful to the degree that John Smoltz has over the last 20 years while doing it the right way. Diligence, hardwork, determination, a competitive spirit and an undeniable will to win set Smoltz apart from so many that have played this special game. Congratulations are in order for a future member of the Hall of Fame and the greatest pitcher my Atlanta Braves have ever had.

My fave season of John’s - other than 1991 - was 1996, his Cy Young Year. His final regular season game stands out the most. He pitched phenomenally that game, and hit a home run as well. I’ll never forget the look on his face as he rounded the bases there at Atlanta Fulton Co. Stadium. He’s a definite shoo-in to the HOF!

Gayle; you don’t have a clue. Smoltz was the epitomy of unselfish when he WENT to the bullpen. He did not want to but did so…for over three years…because he put the team first. Anyone who has played any level of sports would undertand that at a certain point you also have to listen to your body…and his was telling him that the routine of a relief pitcher was impacting his arm/shoulder negatively and would shorten his career. Dawg4life; do you know what prompted the divorce? I would assume you do for such an assertion (sorry Will…I know you probably don’t know what that word means…and it’s NOT what you think). Will…what can I say. You are just retarded.

It’s a shame all these morons have decided to use this forum to make comments about the price of gas, selling tickets and the Braves’ World Series history.

Nothing should take away from what John Smoltz has done for this franchise and this city. He is truly a one-of-a-kind performer and personality, and is without a doubt a first-ballot Hall of Famer. As for his legacy? I don’t think it’s completely written yet. Given his physical conditioning, his current success and the longevity of other similar pitchers into their 40s, he could still have three or four more good years in him.

Just sailed in on my 58 Buick car hood and made my round of all the various blog and I must say that this blog is hand down and head above any other blog on the entire internet. You will never see the constant whining, self-promotion, self-importance, childish arguments or condescending sermonizing that you will find on most other blog. Blog that look more like a chatroom, where 2 or 3 out of work people are allowed to spend their every waking hour posting every feeble thought that enters their pea brains. No siree. You won’t find that here. Nope. Well done.

DOWN ON THE FARM

MIKE HAMPTON. Starts rehab assignment tomorrow in Norfolk. KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED.

INS AND OUTS:

OUT: RYAN BASNER send back to AA Mississippi.

IN: ANDREW SHILIBO pitcher from Mexican league. On same team with former R-Braves IKER FRANCO (c) and JULIO FRANCO.

R-Braves lose in 14 innings. Richmond loaded the bases in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th innings and each time with 0 outs, but only scored four runs total and ultimately lost to the TIDES. Inability to get timely hits seems to be a catching disease in the Braves organization. LOB for the season approaching 120 in 18 games.

The 1991 World Series. That is all people want to talk about regarding Smoltz. Fact is he lost to Jack Morris. Smoltz lasted 9 innings Morris lasted 10 innings. Also, people say he has lost alot of 1-0 or 2-0 games. Solution? Be like the oher pitcher you’re facing, don’t give up any runs. Tues. againt the Nats. he pitched great leaving after 7 trailing 1-0. The other guy left after leading 1-0. Which was better?

Belch!!! Sorry, had to pass gas after trying to digest your last post. Do you consider the two managers moves in that game with the respective offenses not significant? Half a take. Half resolution. Whew!!You blow. No more “baloney” for me.

Will,

your beloved yanks are 12-10…the braves are 10-11, in other words, every one of your arguments thus far can be countered with the fact that your own team is not exactly tearing it up early….i’m sure your illiterate response will be something along the lines of it is early, I am a professional gambler, and come bet against me at blah blah blah website, my father is a vietnam vet but he doesn’t play that card, this is a baseball blog and you shouldn’t either, instead of gambling…how about buy a ticket to watch your yanks play, wait, second thought, enroll in an english class. You are pathetic, and annoying.
