Braves should err on the side of caution

In light of the Braves’ current pitching situation, here’s an idea: Shut down 42-year-old Tom Glavine (with a tight hamstring) and 41-year-old John Smoltz (with a sore shoulder) for two weeks and don’t even think about sending the star-crossed Mike Hampton out to the mound until May.

That won’t happen — mostly because Glavine and Smoltz wouldn’t know what to do with two weeks off in April — but maybe it should. The baseball season is a long, arduous road, and I’d rather go without those guys for a while in April than have them dealing with lingering, nagging injuries all year. It also seems like a better option than trying to trade for an upgrade from what could be perceived as a desperate position.

Granted, those could well be a rough two weeks, with some likely combination of Jorge Campillo, Jeff Bennett, Buddy Carlyle, Jo-Jo Reyes and Chuck James filling in between Tim Hudson and Jair Jurrjens. But wouldn’t that be easier to take now than in September? And with their rotation healthy, the Braves could dig themselves out of an early hole easier than they could stay in the hunt later with no arms.

What do you think? Am I crazy to subject us to a temporary rotation that features three huge question marks, or does it make some sense to you?

Completely unrelated note: If you’re going to make Bennett the long reliever, don’t bring him in for 2/3 of an inning in a 10-2 game, like Bobby Cox did on Saturday, because you might just need him to go three or four the next day, like Bobby did on Sunday.

And after Bennett gave up three runs in four innings on Sunday, Bobby said, “He got wild, I don’t know why. He just got really wild.”

And here’s the TV schedule for the next two series (let me know if this is helpful and I’ll put it at the end of each blog):
Tuesday: at Marlins, 7:10, SportSouth
Wednesday: at Marlins, 7:10, FSN South
Thursday: at Marlins, 7:10 SportSouth
Friday: vs. Dodgers, 7:30, Peachtree TV
Saturday: vs. Dodgers, 3:55, FOX
Sunday: vs. Dodgers, 1:30, SportSouth and TBS

Potatoes, which are native to Peru, can be grown at almost any elevation or climate: from the barren, frigid slopes of the Andes Mountains to the tropical flatlands of Asia. They require very little water, mature in as little as 50 days, and can yield between two and four times more food per hectare than wheat or rice.

Sorry, that was not a baseball post but it needed to be said. I think a rotation with Jair Jurrjens and Jo-Jo Reyes is heavy on J’s and the team needs more K’s. That’s all for now. Your friend, Spud

Chop Chick, I like the TV schedule. You have a couple of good points but Bobby Cox has no plan. Its a guessing game to him. Bring up Josh Anderson to play LF and pitch the kids till old men get well. You may be surprised. Go Braves.

There’s no way Cox would go with minor leaguers if there are healthy or even semi-healthy veterans available.

I predict Hampton will be forced to man up and at least attempt to fill in for Glavine, who likely will only miss one start.

I have not read about Smoltz having any problems after his second start … so I am not sure why he would need to sit. Just limit his pitches and hopefully he will be OK.

If the bottom of the order could hit reliably, the Braves would have 2 or 3 losses. Other than the Chuck James debacle, pitching hasn’t been unusually bad, but Bennett is clearly not the answer to any question. Send him to the minors once Hampton is healthy.

DOWN ON THE FARM

Chuck James gives up three in his first R-Braves start and loses 3-1 to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs and Chris Woodward. Ugh. Didn’t pitch badly. And Josh Anderson NOT in Atlanta tonight. Guess Bobby wants to really test Diaz before caving on the no need for a platoon thing. Anderson had 2 hits and an RBI. Canizares double and single. Lines tomorrow. R-Braves 8-3.

your right about Bobbys misuse of Bennett. I hate seeing him use our best relievers in blowouts because i know it will hurt us down the road.
I think in no way should Bobby let Smoltz pitch more than 5 innings if hes still feeling soreness!

Glad you mentioned the Bennett useage on Sat. and Sun. I was wondering the same thing myself and couldn’t understand the Sat. appearance. Is Bobby trying to blow this guys surgically repaired arm before we get to May ???

Bobby has never be great at managing arms. The Braves won all those flags b/c he didn’t have to (most of the time) because his rotation was younger and packed with future hall of fame pitchers.

When he lost his big three/four he and to a degreee Leo floundered.

Sure they kept the flag stuff going for a few more years but the team was on fumes at that point.

When BC needs to play the chess game that is arm mgt he seems to struggle or pay too much heed to R/L match ups.

He really misses Leo in those situations where the impulse is to pull/swap arms in games where a steady hand would do better.

Leo was/is a hard a* and not the most youth friendly guy but under his watch there seemed to be fewer injuries, more useful trips to the mound versus McDowell’s rare and seemingly useless trips to buy the bullpen time.

BC needed Leo to protect BC from himself. Bobby tweaks too much and he burns through pens like no other mgr in the bigs.

I think pitchers simply need to suck it up. I mean, you can’t predict when an injury will happen so what will a little rest do them? What if they quickly get injured again later? Then you not only lost two weeks because you simply wanted to rest them but you could lose another two weeks or longer because of a more significant injury. Just go out and pitch and see what happens. That’s life. Do you take a few days off every time you get a hang nail and “can’t type” because you are worried something worse is going to happen?

Besides, didn’t they get enough rest during the last 6 months since last season? Now is the time to get to get out there and do your job. At least John Smoltz has this mentality. He’ll pitch unless his arm is practically laying on the ground.

I said that Glavine was a mistake and I still think he is. The Braves should have traded for a younger proven starter. I really dont care about Glavine and thats the truth. What I wanted was for the braves to sign someone very good who would compliment Hudson, Smoltz and Jurrjens. Instead we get a still beat up Hampton and add a 42 year old muscle puller.

This braves team is not any better then last year. All it is is a injury to happen. Oh and let me remind you that Jo Jo and the rookie gang are the ones that did so badly last year. Sorry but these guys would bury us in a hole that we would never get out of. These pitchers, Hudson, Smoltz, Glavine, Hampton and Jurrjens are paid to pitch and 4 of them paid well. They need to earn their money.

Yes! John Smoltz should get rest if you want him pitching effectively in September and of course in October.

They do need to earn their money, but it seems to always be about playing in October, and we need to get there!

Granted I don’t follow all the teams in both leagues, but from what I do see, BC is the worst manager in baseball at handling a pitching staff. I don’t know that Leo is the answer, but he sure needs someone to help him. (Someone he would listen to.)

By Alan

April 15, 2008 8:28 AM | Link to this

This is an ageing and injury vulnerable rotation. Glavine imploded lst season and he’s a year older now. Smoltz’ shoulder looks chronic and Hampton, well will he ever pitch again?.

They need some rest like position players and missing a start on a regulatr basis, especially early in the season, sounds like a decent idea.

Unfortunately apart from Bennett the Minor leaague starters [Reyes, Carlyle and James] do not inspire confidence.

Catch 22, especially as they are not playing like a team that is going to make October.

Bobby trying to manage arms is like me trying to play hearts or spades…I understand the basic concept, but I just don’t get the strategy of it all. Sometimes it works out, and I do really well…but I readily admit that it’s a lot of luck when that happens. And most of the time I’m just bad bad bad. At least I can admit it.

Bobby’s the same way with the arms…he gets the basic idea, but he really struggles with anything outside the norm. You can tell this by his apparent inability to think 3 feet in front of his a*…wasting a pitcher today KNOWING that you’ll likely need him tomorrow…then he’ll blame it all on bad luck. But my friends, luck has NOTHING to do with that! You just KNOW that’s how it’s gonna play out when you see your closer trotting out there in a blowout, don’t ya? Why doesn’t he realize this after so many years in MLB?!?!?

As far as your suggestion that we rest Tom and John now, I do see what you’re saying; however, if I’m not mistaken, those games in September that you’re so worried about count no more than these games now. And if we don’t catch some kinda roll here real soon, then the July/August games aren’t gonna mean diddly poo…let alone, September/October games.

The Braves gambled on aged (Smoltz and Glavine) and repaired (Hampton) arms and lost. This is what you get when you sit back on your @$$ and do nothing in the off-season to really shore up the pitching staff. Add to this the injuires and woes with the bullpen, this team is toast unless things get turned around quick.

I suspect the main culprit here is the schedule that sent the Braves to Denver in early April. The Rockies should be playing Division foes at this time so that makeup games can be scheduled during regularly scheduled visits, but sending a warm-weather team (Atlanta) to the Rockies in what is essentially late winter is just asking for injuries.

Despite the merits of your plan, Ms. Chop, I would not recommend putting Glavine and/or Smoltz on the DL unless it proved absolutely necessary. The Braves have shown zero ability to play “catch-up” the past two years, and I think their only hope is to hang around and hope for the best.

A win is a win, whether in April or August, and if a veteran has to go on the DL late in the year, his minor-league replacement has at least had that much more seasoning before coming up to face Major League opponents.

R-Braves’ James loses on 1 earned and the locals fall out of the International League lead by 1/2 game.

ANDERSON is NOT in Atlanta this morning much to my chagrin. Instead Buddy Carlysle joins Jorge Campillo on the A-Braves roster. Its time to see what Buddy’s made of. If he does not show well this time around JoJo Reyes is ready to go south from Richmond.

THORMAN is batting .300 in his last three games. He looks like he is coming around.

LiLLIBRIDGE had a well deserved night off. His average suffers, but he does the most he can with walks, and the few hits (4) he’s had. These have been very productive. His lack of hits for average is mystifying, and I’m sure Chris Chambliss is doing all he can to straighten things out.

Susan, you’re an idiot.

Tom Glavine has done nothing but prove himself in his first two starts this season. He pitched a gem opening night, and pitched even better against the Rox last week.

Glavine is more durable than any pitcher in baseball; calling him a muscle-puller when this is his first known muscle pull in his career is a faulty remark and highly problematic.

Frank Wren brought in an established veteran and 300 game winner to serve as an adequate third starter.

Glavine will be a 15 game winner when this season is done with, given the bullpen doesn’t blow any more of his starts.

The Braves will be fine.

I’m not sure when the last time Bennet threw was but it was probably a case of Bobby wanting him to get a “touch and feel” bullpen. Relievers have to stay sharp by throwing against hitters on a regular basis. I can’t believe that he threw that many pitches in 2/3 of an inning but I did not see the game.

By justin

If 2/3rd’s of an inning causes you to be wild in your second or third inning of work the next day, then you have no business in the majors. Sorry but it’s the truth. That was not what happend. Now if Bobby would have had Bennett work 2 innings Saturday and then work Sunday, that would have been bad.

Also, I think your idea is crazy! We are already under .500 right now, and yes it is a long season, but you are setting yourself up to go on a streak where we will lose 9 of 10 if we shut down Glavine and Smoltz. Chop Chick, I appreciate what you do and all, but I sure am glad you don’t manage the Braves.

Shut them both down for two weeks? Are you serious? This is the third week of the season. If they need to be shut down this early, just imagine what shape they will be in come September. Speaking of September, if you shut them down now, you won’t have to worry about September because the Braves will be about 20 games back by then. A pitching staff consisting of Hudson, Carlyle, Reyes, Bennet, and Jurjens is not going to carry a team for two weeks. If anything, the Braves need to make a trade or two…

Why in the world would you shut down Smoltz? That’s stupid. The whole point of his spring training regimen and early DL stint was to calm things down in his shoulder. If Glavine needs the time to rest his hammy, OK. And if Glavine and maybe Hampton are back in early May and Smoltz needs some time off then, fine.

But the same time? Please.

In a word, “no”. A loss in april counts just as much in the standings as a loss in September. These guys know their bodies and just let them be as cautious as they think they need to be. You don’t want to get us in a hole we can’t dig ourselves out of. The old saying goes you can’t win a championship before the all-star break, but you can lose one. And even then, its not really apparent that shelving those three guys would gurantee their health in September anyway.

For those who are really worried about his team, lets just take a little peek at the current standings. Your division leaders are…. (drum roll)

Baltimore, KC, Oakland, Florida, St. Louis and Arizona. I’d bet a LOT of money that one or fewer of these teams makes the playoffs.

Now, lets look at teams who are in last or next to last in their division: Colorado, LAD, Cincinnatti, Atlanta, Seattle, Cleveland, Detroit, and NYY. I’d e willing to bet that 4 or more of those teams make the playoffs.

Yes, there are legitimate concerns right now, but they’re not anything that can’t be corrected on tehir own within a month. We’re 2 games out of first place and could very well be in first place after the end of this series, with Hudson, Smoltz and Jurjjens going against the fish who have been doing it with smoke and mirrors (they’be been outscored by over 1 run per game).

Why would you make a trade at this point? We’re 2 games back and only 1 team in the division is above .500. Do you think the Marlins will stay on top? I don’t. The ONLY trade I could see is another bullpen arm and I think that’s even pushing it at this point. Plus, just about everyone else is searching for bullpen help. Give it a little time. I think we’ll be okay.

Bobby is not the greatest x’s and o’s type of manager, but his ability to have players play puts him near the top of managers in the game. Yes, he is predictable, and after watching him for this whole run I can predict just about every move he is going to make. That in itself does not make him a bad manager. The big problem is an old core with muscles losing their elasticity (Hoss, Glavine, Smoltz, etc.) and youth that is either not quite ready or not quite good enough. If the team can stay near the .500 mark through May the warmer weather should help them make a run. Sending any team to Denver in early April is insane, but that is the problem with dollars over sense.

There’s still 150 games left in the season, so I think the Braves are gonna be just fine. I don’t really see a need to sit Smoltz unless the shoulder really starts causing more problems for him. I can see giving Glavine a week off. It won’t kill the season for him to miss one or two games.

They’re only two games behind Florida (who will do just like last year and fall off the charts) and only a half game behind the Mets and Phillies. I can see the urgency behind setting up the team for later success, but as long as they play .500 ball over the next couple weeks, they’re gonna be just fine when the entire rotation is (hopefully) healthy again. The lineup is good enough to help with run support for Bennett, Reyes, Carlyle, or whoever else they decide to throw out there.

It is ironic that when Leo was in control of pitchers, they spent very little time on the DL. Maybe the pitchers are just older, but it makes me wonder the effectiveness of Roger’s leadership. Bobby normally goes to Roger to determine the available pitchers for any game.

I’ve said it before, but dump Roger for a real pitching coach. I’ve said it before!

As far as shutting down Smoltz, Hampton and Glavine…. A hamstring needs to heal so in Glavine’s case, shut him down until it has healed. A pulled hammie does not make someone injury-prone.

Now with Smoltz and Hampton it could be different - Is Smoltz’s problem a true shoulder issue or is it cramping in the trap muscle - It’s never been made clear. If it’s a cramping trap, he needs to manage it, but if it is a true shoulder issue that does not require surgery - rest him!

Now we come to Hampton - talk about injury-prone. The term itself (injury-prone) was created for Hampton. But a bad boob? C’mon - Trade him for that case of balls. Just kidding - we have to get something out of him and come next year, we had better get a better deal than Glavine gave us.

I Believe Frank Wren is a” yes “man to JS & BC. No Balls to stand up to them when needed. Will he pull the trigger without their ok. We will see.

RichmondBrave:

A lot of health issues this year. No extremes of cold or height. No games at the park so far this year. Last year three games I believe. But I’ll be there the 25th. My oldest grandson and his RBI Nationals team will have a photo op with the Braves. Don’t know where our tickets are located, but I’m sure it’ll be a group thing. I’ll try to get a line and let you know.

JOSH ANDERSON JUST SCORED AN INSIDE-THE-PARK HOME-RUN!!!!!

There are many people who call out people for taking “welfare” for not working. The amounts involved in this are usually miniscule. Would the term “welfare cheat” apply to a Major League Baseball pitcher who has collected millions of dollars for NOT throwing a baseball over a period of years?? What kind of decadence is it for an individual to take money while NOT performing the work that he was contracted for?? In ANY other walk of life or human endeavor how would a person be defined who did not at least make an offer to reject SOME compensation owed him in lieu of performing NONE of the expected work??Sounds like a WELFARE RECIEPIENT to me. What does it honestly say to you???

I think what we have here is in todays modern game, pitching isn’t what it used to be say in the 60’s and 70’s. THe piching has been watered down so that every team needs pitching. If you are a left hander and can break a paine of glass, you have a job. So, no one wants to pitch when hurt, not even the mangagement, In the old days you had to go out there and bring it, sore arm or not because waiting in line was someone ready to take your job, you did what you had to do. Nowadays managers handle their pitchers with kid gloves, because there just isn’t enough quality out there. that’s why all these mediocre pitchers keep getting shuffled around from one team to the other.

A. Skinner (let Cox run the team) Are you crazy the Nut has for past 20+ years and won one WS.2nd don’t count with anyone but Braves. He couldn’t coach the East Cobb Little League. When is Management going to wake up. Same BS over and over. Wait till tomorrow and we should have won. We hit the ball hard. We didn’t have any support. Excuse, excuse, excuse. Most of their problems is COx. Best CF,and LF is in Richmond.Braves also need a hitting Coach not TP. and a New Pitching Coach that has a Clue! Wren and John Must be Blind.

A devout Braves fan from Dalton GA who now lives in Niles MI, I couldn’t agree more with the April lay-off. Injuries only get worse, if not addressed, treated, then given adequate time to heal! And let us not forget…they (Smoltz & Glavine) are in their 40’s! Complete healing to men their age is twice that of a man in his 20’s.

Reason some pitchers didn’t like Leo( mainly Hudson) is that he made them work. Just what they need and Cox has not been the same since. Boy they miss Corrales also.

WHY ARE WE EVEN HAVING THIS DISCUSSION?THE BRAVES WERE JUST TOO DAMN CHEAP IN THE OFF SEASON TO GET SOME DECENT PITCHING. THE FANS TOLERATE THIS MESS BECAUSE THE BALLPARK IS A “FUN” PLACE. ITS HOPELESS.

DING!DING!DING!! AND THE WINNER IS JOHN!!! Yes the answer to all of these problems is that the Braves are too cheap to go and get us any top of the line talent every year!! Johan Santana goes to our division rivals and we don’t even attempt to go after him. Instead, we counter with 40 year old Glavine?!?!?! YOU THINK WE ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO RESIGN TEXIERA?!?!?!? THERE IS NO REASON OTHER THAN BEING CHEAP THAT THE BRAVES SHOULDN’T CONTEND IN SIGNING EVERY FREE AGENT EVERY OFF SEASON!!!!
