Braves’ clever strategy fails to pay off
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What the …? If you turned the game off after nine innings last night, you missed one of the greatest things about baseball: You don’t ever know what you’re going to see.
In the top of the 10th, Chris Resop walked Nyjer Morgan, who was then sacrificed to second. Jason Bay walked, and Morgan went to third on a passed ball. Enter Bobby Cox.
Bobby brought in Royce Ring AND SENT RESOP TO LEFT FIELD TO REPLACE MATT DIAZ.
Bobby had vowed to give Peter Moylan the night off, and if he was going to keep that promise, Ring was the last pitcher available. To avoid burning the lefty Ring and having to bring in the righty Moylan, he stowed Resop in left, used Ring to strike out the left-hander Adam LaRoche, then sent Gregor Blanco into left and brought Resop back in to pitch to right-hander Xavier Nady.
As clever as that strategy was, it didn’t work. Nady singled in the winning run, his seventh RBI of this series. But you’ve got to hand it to Bobby for trying.
Actually, you may have to hand it to Roger McDowell. In 1986, Mets manager Davey Johnson alternated the right-handed McDowell with the left-handed Jesse Orosco, sending one to left or right field and bringing the other in to pitch, depending on the hitter. Guess Bobby listens to his pitching coach after all!
This move was a mild distraction from the huge disappointment of Mike Hampton’s scratched start, and came at the end of a valiant effort by an exhausted bullpen (particularly by Jeff Bennett).
What did you think of the strategy? There’s talk of Chuck James and Jo-Jo Reyes, but what do you think the Braves should do now that Hampton’s going on the DL and they’ll need another starter? What should they do about opening a roster spot for John Smoltz? Can the bullpen handle much more over the next few days? What about the fact that the Braves head into this weekend’s series against the Mets having lost three tough one-run games, two of them in extras?

Why is Hampton still on the roster?? Rub some dirt on it and play some ball man!! Get rid of this guy, please. I know it’s very early, but the Braves look very average at best. The Pirates are not exactly teeming with talent. Could be an Ugly weekend

This sucks. I am sick of hampton you cant count on the guy for anything. And Resop is horrible, and now we have to see Jo-Jo walk a man Reyes, and Chuck 2 pitch James, this sucks, this season is going to suck. GoodLuck against those mets braves your going to need it.

I’m afraid my screaming for Johan Santana is going to come back to haunt the Braves in a couple of days. That’s what I think.
Buddy Carlyle pitched O.K. today; not great, but O.K. Only lasted 3.2, but cold(45) windy and drizzle with occasional steady downpours - an absolute horror of a day to work in. Nothing much proven by the pitching here today.
Josh Anderson and Barbaro Canizares looked good with the stick. Thorman made a bad error letting in the go ahead and deciding run.

Well, for some reason I decided to go to the game today. Pretty terrible idea, although the seats were great. I believe it was Josh Bennett pitching, not Buddy Carlyle. I have never heard of Josh Bennett until today so I don’t think it matters.
Moving Resop to left field temporarily was a clever idea, but considering how bad LaRoche looked most of the game I don’t think it would have made a difference if Resop or Ring had pitched to him. And the way Nady had been killing the Braves this series I would have walked him and taken my chances with Bautista. But managers have these weird rules about not intentionally walking guys when runners are on 1st, etc. which I guess make sense to them. So who knows.
In the end if you don’t hit with runners in scoring position it doesn’t matter who you have pitching at the end of the game. 10 hits, 10 men left on base. Teixeira in particular was the black hole in the middle of the lineup today.

Concerning Mike Hampton, he is on the D.L. because of a strained pectoral muscle ?
GIVE ME A FRIGGING BREAK ALREADY, RUB SOME BEN-GAY OR ICY HOT ON IT AND GET YOUR SORRY AZZ ON THE MOUND !
Enough already, I have heard some brutal excuses before but this one takes the damn cake.
Mike Hampton has no heart, no guts and certainly no Cahonas.

It’s always easy to second-guess the manager after the fact, but why do you go to extraordinary lengths to keep a pitcher in the game who has walked 2 of 3 batters faced? I don’t see the percentage there.

Bobby Cox is a great manager. But the lefty/righty thing is his achille’s heel. He was outcoached in every World Series who played the hot hand instead of being slaves to the book. Sure bring in a lefty to face a lefty. But don’t burn your whole bullpen just because a banjo hitter lefty comes up in a key situation. And the Resop/Ring thing was stupid. Ring had just struck out a guy. Resop couldn’t find the plate. And Nady, Dear God, when did this journeyman become Barry Bonds. Walk his a$$. If he beats us another game this year, Cox should be fired on the spot.

I’d have to agree that the Braves have been looking just average so far, I’m actually very afraid of what this weekend will bring, seeing that the mets are normally known for handing it to us, in the worst way.

Hampton needs to go….I sincerely think that you will see him be released after his stint on the DL (I man by wrong, but I think ML rules won’t let you release a player when he is on the DL)
I have never been a fan for the lefty/righty thing, and last night proved why…..you take out Diaz WHO IS OUR BEST CLUTCH HITTER, and who is the 2nd hitter in the inning……priceless bobby…..
one april series does not make a season, but this is a very important week-end just for confidence sake…..

The braves aren’t going to release Hampton because of the 15 million dollar salary he makes. If Hampton stays on the DL, then the insurance I hope they have on him kicks in and they save money.
I actually understand the move BC made. Nady matches up well against Ring, but such a desperate move would not need to have been made if BC could manage pen.
Just a thought, but maybe BC should have used Resop vs. LaRoche and left Diaz in the game to hit.
In fact it is not BC’s fault. The great offense does not hit anything but mediocre pitching. The bullpen is a bunch of rejects that would drive any manager crazy.
BC always runs out of players in games. I am used to it by now.
The Bravos have not been any good in 3 years, maybe they get better, but right now they are not any good.

I don’t think you can blame the overuse of the bullpen completely on Bobby last night. I’ll pin that one on Mike Hampton. I hope the Braves are no longer counting on his broken down a* to give us anything other than some tired relievers. I will say this, though: RING IS NOT A LEFTY SPECIALIST!!! career OPS vs LHB = .626, vs RHB = .570. THE DUDE CAN GET RIGHTIES OUT! STOP BRINGING HIM IN TO FACE ON BATTER!!!!

Hamp, nobody has been rooting more for your brilliant “prove ‘em all wrong” comeback more than me. But I’d like to share with you now something that a friend once told me her dad said about staying too long at concerts: “Always leave when the music’s still playing.”

I think if our offense improved, we should not be concerned with pitching. I mean, TEX need to get hot sooner rather than later. Otherwise, Braves will be in deeper hole before end of April.
From my view, pitching is OK they keep us in the game. Just need to start hitting it better

I know it’s early, but the 2008 version of the Braves is beginning to look a lot like the 2007 disaster. Hampton’s injured! No big shocker there. And this guy’s is the highest paid player on the roster?! Why is this club paying a guy $15 million a year to sit on the bench? $15m would get any other team a pretty good — and healthy — arm. Nice gig, hey Mike? GET RID OF HIM!!
Then there’s Bobby Cox. The man has been a good manager in his career, but he started to lose it last year when he insisted on keeping a .200 hitter (A. Jones) in the cleanup spot until well into the second half of the year. That move cost the team countless wins. At least the club finally had the sense to ditch that overpaid, lazy bum, but it was too late to salvage the season.
Now, lets fire Hampton, get a reliable fourth starter and find a way to ease Cox into Shady Pines or Ocean Pines or somewhere besides the Braves’ dugout.

I’m so glad to see Tyler Yates shutting down the Braves with Corky Miller on the roster. That was a brilliant roster move. I guess it makes it easy to decide who to send down when we bring Smoltz up.
Wouldn’t it be funny if the insurance company the Braves have for Hampton’s salary go after Hampton personally for his salary the last 2 years.

It would be nice to have Wainwright available, wouldn’t it. those rental trades to prop up Cox and JS and their “credentials” aint looking so good. Just wait a couple of years for the youngsters we gave the Rangers to mature.
JT wants us to wait for “Big Tex’s bat to wake up”. I am sure it will gain some level of consciousness but it will make no material difference. So long, “Big Tex”. You were another expensive folly.

Perhaps Hampton should just retire…It is obvious his body is not up to the task of pitching in the major leagues. His propensity to injury is simply obsurd. I am the same age and very athletic and I too get injured, but holy crap! Not like that.

obviously you cant fire him, hotshot. dont forget hes getting nine figures to “work his butt off.” its def not a sob story or anything. next time you get a bi-weekly paycheck for working 40-50 hours a week, remind yourself that hampton’s is for $600,000 there abouts. thats bi-weekly. twice a month. if this was the nfl he’d be out of a job quick. he should scratch tom glavine and every union guy’s back every day he waked up.

Anybody who thinks Mike Hampton is a wussie is misinformed. You would not risk 30 months of rehab and two major, complex surgeries on an injury that could cause more problems. A pectoral pull is not a simple matter. It, in and of itself can put you on the DL for months.
It’s still early. This team will gel soon and get on a run. Don’t fret.

tommy lasorda used to do that pitcher/outfielder trick with oral hershiser, but it worked better for tommy.
if you are a major league pitcher and can’t pitch effectively against lefties AND righties, maybe you aren’t really a major league pitcher.
hampton will pitch this season, and i think he will be one of our more effective starters … and have a dozen or so wins. it is easy to kick a man when he’s down, as this blog shows.

cox it is time to say good-bye him, yesterday it committed the biggest error that a mgr can commit and is to put a pitcher as LF if in this moment they give him a fly to resop that it had done, had given the life for having seen something like that
also every year that happens cox with brave these lose opportunities, gentlemen!!! we have a good team and next to cox are not coming to any side, I have always defended it but the action that it did yesterday of putting a pitcher as LF me gave to understand that cox this one others in atlanta

Speaking of McDowell, why is he still the Braves pitching coach when Leo is available. I am living for the day that McDowell is with some team other than the Braves. The pitching staff has not improved under his not-so-watchful eye.

Come on Hampton. Since you signed the big $121 million contract in 2001, you’ve started a total of 134 starts. Is hard for a working stiff like me to feel sorry for somebody who makes almost $1 million per start and has an ERA of almost 5 runs per game. Come on man, you ever seen what Brett Farve put himself through for much less money. You couldn’t make it through one NFL game. Write him off as loss already but at least make him serve beer to the fans paying $6.75 per beer so we’d at least get something out of him.
For those of you already putting dirt on the Braves 2008 season, we’ve lost 3 games so far by a total of 3 runs. We’ve scored 5 more runs then allowed. It’s early folks - real early.

hampton will pitch this season, and i think he will be one of our more effective starters … and have a dozen or so wins. it is easy to kick a man when he’s down, as this blog shows.
Geekboy
Realize you must be a friend of Hampton’s or something. I know fans have their favorite players but I would actually be surprise if he starts 12 games, much less wins all 12 of them. I honestly thought and still hope the Braves might get around 12 to 15 starts from him and hopefully have Hampton available for the post-season. Providing of course that they make it that far.
Don’t know if anyone listen to Skip Cary on the radio last night but he sounded awful. I am assuming he still has ongoing health problems.

Cox should have put McCann in with Morgan at 3rd. That would have been smart, but Bobby’s so wrapped up in his cowpen he’s starting to grow an udder. Did you see the look of disgust on Chipper’s face at the meeting on the mound. Somebody do something, make Louie the mngr. I don’t care anybody’s better than Cox. All he does is make moves that over shadow great nights by Chipper and Diaz. We’ll be under the bus in 2 wks. if something isn’t done.

How could you let this loser of a franchise beat yinz? One of their pitches has an era of 81! You even cheated! Resop shouldn’t have been allowed to throw more warm-up pitches after returning to the mound. Kent Tekulve went from the mound to right field and caught the final out in a World Series game years back. The Pirates have struggled every since. That move is a bad omen. I predict 15 years of losing seasons for the Braves!

The strategy worked fine. Lousy pitching, errors, and passed balls were the problem. By the way is there anyway we can trade Hampton for Carl Pavano? It would save $5 million.

A LITTLE HELP. How do I figure ERA on a hand-held calculator? Carlyle went 3.2 and gave up 3 earned. Moss 1.1 and gave up 3 earned. Basner 1 and gave up 2 earned. I want to keep track from the local boxes in the paper.
AND is there any way I can retain the spacing when I post? As you can see, it makes the lines difficult to decipher when the data in the columns is out of alignment because the spacing disappears.
And finally, it appears Skip Carey is slowly losing ground to some malaise. Others have inferred indirectly that it might be liquid refreshment. I don’t want to be callous and jump on that band-wagon especially when its not true. I have a genuine regard for the man and wish him well, and would like him to know that WHATEVER the reason, he has my highest regard. I love his ascerbic wit. Hampton for a new mngr. would be a nice change. If the Braves do turn it around it will be because of the players and Bobby sitting on wis but and under managing. He WAS a great mngr for Atl. But he’s stubborn and won’t leave til he is fired. Landry, Dooley, Torre, etc. all got fired. Cox isnt impervious to being canned.

are you people really braves fans? 4 games into the season, we haven’t really had a lot to cheer about as far as results, but we haven’t played horribly or anything! the starting pitching has been great! as far as hampton goes, if it’s serious enough for a 15-day DL stint, it must not be just some minor pain so give the guy a break! and the pitcher-outfield swap thing was interesting indeed- but if it had’ve paid off, everyone would be saying what a genious BC is. So stop whining and just get behind the team! 4 games in and some of you guys are already counting them out- that’s not a true fan at all!

richbrave: Here’s a site that describes how to calculate ERAs. And I have it from a good source that Skip has NOT fallen off the wagon. He almost died last October, and it sounds like sleep deprivation, fatigue and possibly medications are taking a toll. Here’s an AJC story about that. As for the spacing issues, I don’t know that there’s a way to retain the tab spacing when you post. But, for what it’s worth, I could read those stat lines fine.

Why is it that whenever those of us who dare question Braves’ moves, whether in-season or offseason, are called “bad Braves fans”? Just because we don’t agree with every move by Bobby Cox or because we say things like “Gee, we didn’t look so hot that last series” doesn’t make us “bad Braves fans.”
Chop Chick, I think you should fine everyone who carelessly throws out the term “bad Braves fan” in this blog $1 for the remainder of the season. At least then we can buy our buddy Geekboy that trip to Mike Hampton “Just Sittin’ Around And Thinkin’ About Pitchin’ In The Majors Again” Fantasy Camp that he so longs for.

I think the term “frustrated Braves fans” would be more accurate than the other phrase (in case CC does start the fining process). As mentioned earlier the breaks just have not gone the Braves way these 1st few games. Thinks have a tendency to even out. It is hard to tell about a team until after the 1st month of the season. If we continue this pace 1 - 3 pace and end up around say 9 - 27 in 40 days we have a major problem. Just cannot see that happening.

The article on Skip was informative and scary. He&&, he’s just three years older than me.
Hey SKIP. If you read this hang in. As you know, life’s a precious commodity for those of us who’ve come close to losing it. Lots of folks want to see you continue on the air.
I’m in Richmond and unfortunately TBS and the Braves have cut me off from any decent broadcasters. Yesterday the Nationals were on and I had to listen to Don Sutton drone on with that egotistical drivel he passes of as “inside information.” Constantly trying to take over the broadcast from the color sideline. Guess he’s where he should be - D.C. The mirror image of Joe Theismann. Sorry for the rant. Its just the frustration showing of not having access to the games on any basis.
BTW your young man Chip does a great job of providing info within the flow of the game without trying to control it. You did a fine job dad. Be proud.

Or for $15 bucks you can listen to all the games online.

But Bobby, for instance almost riuning or at leastt shortening it by having him play LF. Do you think A Rod would do that? Then Smoltz going to the pen turned out OK, it wouldn’t suprise me to see it this yr if it wasn’t for Soriano. Nothing he does antmore will stun me. I’m a Braves fan, not a B. Campillo was an original Braves pick way back 12 years ago. Loaned to the Mexican league, he was never reclaimed and left the Braves. He’s B-A-A-C-C-K!! 75 pitch limit 4.1 innings. Not bad. 18 of his first 20 were strikes. Two games in the majors@29 years old. This guy has learned how to pitch.
Spotted by R-Braves manager Dave Brundige while in the Seattle organization, he’s resurrected in a braves uni.
BTW I like Brundige. A no nonsense, but well-schooled baseball man, he’d be a good candidate to take BC’s place when the time comes.
Asw far as standout sticks this early part of the season, Barbaro Canizares is the name. He’s tearing the cover off the ball picking up where he left off last year. 5-9 so far in two games. In this dark park even a two game line like that deserves a compliment. And I can’t see letup. This man comes to play, believing if the Braves don’t want his services, he;ll make some other organization want him with results. I like it.
Scott Thorman had a rough day April 3. His was the fatal error letting in the tying and go ahead runs. Scratched from yesterday’s line-up and 0-5 on opening day. You don’t play for Brundige without your cap on straight. Hopefully, he’ll regain his equilibrium and play well soon. And Scott Spiezio makes his position here a little shaky.

Lillibridge broke out yesterday with both a double and home run. Brandon Jones is steady with 4 doubles on the season. Canizares still hitting after 3 games. R-Braves record on the year now 2-1. Thorman continues to struggle. I see Brundige put him at dh this time instead of in the field To me switching Spiezio, Canizares and Thorman at dh and field is more good management than a true statement about Thorman’s glove.
Charlie Morton was impressive in his first AAA start, 4.2, 0 WALKS, 3 STRIKEOUTS. If he keeps this up, a half-season here and he’s gone to Atlanta. And best wishes to him.
