Spring Training brings a lineup change

Spring Training usually brings a few new players into the mix, and this year, the Chop Chick blog has a lineup change as well. My predecessor’s workload has gotten a bit heavier over the past year, so I’m grabbing a bat and stepping into the box. I’ll post two or three times a week in March and more frequently when the real action starts.

A little background: My father wanted a boy; I’m an only child. So I grew up a sports fan, most notably, a big Braves fan. My family’s annual summer vacation was a trip to Atlanta to go to Six Flags and a Braves game, but when the Superstation made its way to southeast Alabama in 1978, when I was 9, my life changed forever.

I used to fall asleep on the couch to Skip Caray’s voice during West Coast trips, which were plentiful back when the Bravos were in the NL West. I imitated Gary Matthews’ intimidating swing at my softball games. I was one of the few kids in the country who was thrilled to see Biff Pocoroba and Pepe Frias when I opened the Topps package.

In other words, I love this team, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know all of you who feel the same way. I’m excited about writing this blog and about the potential for the Braves this year. So I’ll begin by asking you the same question I posed to GM Frank Wren at the Braves 400 Club’s Gameboree in February:

What excites you most about this current team?

(His answer: The fact that the “kids” — Brian McCann, Jeff Francouer — are heading into their third full season and are about to hit their strides.)

What excites me most is Yunel Escobar. I liken him to Albert Pujols in raw talent. Not as much power as Albert, but a pure hitter. Odd too, because I was the biggest Edgar Renteria fan around, and still am, but I am sooo psyched about Yunel!!

YUNEL ESCOBAR, KELLY JOHNSON, MATT DIAZ in Atlanta excite me. CHARLES MORTON in Richmond excites me.

I am kind of curious to see how improved defensively Kelly Johnson is at 2nd base this year and also the double play combination of him and Yunel together on the field. Johnson seems to always get overshadowed because of McCann and Francouer. Now Escobar appears to be stealing the spotlight from him this season. K.J. is one of those rare batters who can help this team whether he is leading off, batting 2nd or even 7th. I think he is capable of hitting around 20 to

ROMAN88:

As best I can understand it, Francouer wants a future ++ value now if he signs long-term. The Braves won’t give it to him. So Frenchy’s trying to show ‘um on the field, and earn his pay-raise with his play year by year. He’s still tied to the team without free-agent options so the two parties are at a stand-off at present. Thus no long-term deal now.

It will happen however. There are no hard feelings, public at least on either side. So no worries from that area. Francouer’s the face of this franchise for the future, in my humble opinion, and will be Chipper’s replacement ultimately. Hopefully years in the future.

Welcome, Chop Chick!! I am one who used to sit in my room in the evenings pretending to study while actually listening to Milo & Ernie call the action with Hammerin’ Hank, The Beeg Boy Rico Carty, Felix “The Kitten” Millan with Knucksie in the ‘pen. I was thrilled when WTCG started carrying the Braves regionally, then WTB, then TBS doing so nationally. I’m excited about the potential of our pitching staff and hope that our BRavos figure out a way to improve the RISP batting average this year.

Good to see your post. Rightous regarding KJ. I remember when it was LANGERHANS, LANGERHANS. Slow bat with no way of speeding it up, I thought. KJ was a rook and overlooked. Too much McCANN and FRANCOUER. Damn, I said look at this kid’s bat discipline. He wears out pitchers, carries ‘um deep into counts, draws walks, then when they pitch to him he hits ‘um where they ain’t…Then he disappeared, and I thought what a waste, that young man’s good. And now he’s back, better than ever. GO KELLY-GO BRAVES.

Finally, us female braves fans will get to see the braves from a female point of view. Welcome aboard CC.

What excites me about this team? It is seeing our young guys coming into their own and the lethal combo of Chipper and Tex in the 3 and 4 spot in our lineup.

No one seems to be chatting alot about us until lately. Now the major sports writers are talking about us in the same breath as the Mets and Phillies. As the saying goes folks, Actions speak louder than words. Our guys are letting their action speak louder then words could ever speak.

Go Braves.

Ever see Millan in person. The advantage of living in Richmond(soon to be lost). Man could he cover ground. Became a Braves fan when Eddie Mathews was a rookie. Been hanging with them every since. They have a great farm system established way back in the 1800’s when they had many Championship teams. Been doing the same good work every since. I’ve always thought less of Boston’s fans for letting them walk. Its the Braves for me, not the Red Sox from that upstart junior league.

What excites me about this season?

If it was any ONE thing…I’d have to say a full season of the TEX!

With the numbers he put up last year, he could easily put up 40+ homers, 100+ RBIs, and a .300+ BA.

And with Hampton’s contract going away after this season, that amount of money can go TO The Tex.

Anyone one who remembers Pocoroba, Frias, and the SARGE has got to be all right. :) I wonder if Jerry Royster, Rowland Office, and Brian Asselstine ring any bells.

I think the offense will be solid. Escober was already making adjustments to the way teams were pitching him, and he will only get better. If Chipper stays healthy, this could be one of the top 5 run producing lineups in baseball.

As for pitching…I’ll be an optimist and say Glavine, Smoltz, and Hampton stay healthy; Hudson has a Cy Young year, and the bullpen gets enough work to stay sharp but isn’t worn out.

This season is going to be one of pride and reassurences of supremecy. The Mets and Phillies have stood long enough at the top and now its time for us to reclaim that title.

I grew up as a Braves fan my entire life and still remember going to Fulton County stadium as a child and getting roasted peanuts before the game. The memories of game six of the 95 World Series still fresh in my mind. I remember the walks in the underground tunnel to get across the street to the parking lots after a Braves win and everyone chanting, “Go Braves!”

To sum up why I am excited about this year, all you have to do is open your eyes and you feel as though those times are back. The rotation picks up an old face in Glavine and hopefully his stuff will stay strong. Our youngsters are coming into their prime just like the early 90’s and the presance of Justice, Jones, Klesko, and Lemke. The talent is here for this time right now and I think it would be fitting to send Bobby into retirement with another World Series trophy as part of his Hall of Fame crudentials.

LOUIS:

Here’s where the contract negotiations get sticky. Tex is a great fit for our club, but the ownership (LibertyMedia)is gagging on the amount per year and the length of the contract. He will sign if he gets VERY close to what he wants, and that’s whatever the traffic will bear. I’m saying 22.5 million(135 million contract) for six and 21 million for 8(168 million contract). AND that’s the low end. Could run 27 mil. for 6 when others jump in. Personally, I’d lock him up for as long as possible, WHATEVER IT TAKES. This dude’s a keeper.

Welcome Chop Chick. Your experience reminds me of my own (in Macon, GA). Stayed up past 1:00 am on school nights during those west coast trips and would never be worth a dime at school the next day. I’m excited about the fact that our “kids” are now stepping up as men to vault this team back to our righful position in the NL. All this talk about the Mutts (excuse me, Mets) has been all too irritating for the last couple of years. I am also excited about what Tex will be able to do in a full season. But most of all, I’m excited about the fact that I will be able to watch a number of games this year. I live in Louisville, KY and initially, I could not get FSS on my directTV. It will also be interesting to see how many of the geriatric starters can pitch 150+ innings. I have faith in Smoltz, but I wonder if Hampton, Glavine and even Hudson will have the right stuff.

I too am stoked about it being Frenchy and McCann’s 3rd season, but I have to also say that I’m pretty pumped about the whole team. Chipper, Smoltzie, Glav and how could you not love Yunel? I too loved Edgar, but I watched Yunel play A ball at Rome and it’s so exciting to see him up here. The same for Clint Sammons (although that’s yet to be determined.) Our line-up looks solid and our rotation looks very promising, too. And with the possibility of Javy making the club? Heck, I just want to know what’s not to love about this team?

What can I say, I just love my Braves and I’m hoping for a very successful season!

I am very excited about the youthful Braves. In the glory years of the 1990’s the Braves where young and excited about playing baseball. Then as Chipper and the boys aged they got less excited.

I can remember many a caller in the pre-game Skip Carey show calling and asking Skip why they don’t get excited anymore. Skip, of course, would say something like … these are professionals and they do not have to get excited.

I disagree!

Especially when I would later see the Yankee Captains standing on the dugout steps cheering on his team as they would win yet another world series.

It’s really all about the excitement and I hope our veterans get excited about baseball again.

The Braves excite me no matter what. I grew up a Braves fan when they were p** poor. Andres Thomas was an error machine. I do love the potential pitching and the young prospects this year. I love watching the young guys play because they bring so much energy and excitement every night. There is just nothing like a Friday or Saturday night game at Turner Field when it’s sold out. I wish spring training was a little shorter. I hate waiting so long for the season to start. Spring training invites too many injuries to a lot of teams. It should be two weeks long. Go Braves!!!!!!! Ahh how I miss WTCG - Super17!!! It’s a shame that lifelong Braves fans, like myself, and the elderly will miss out on Braves games this year. PeachtreeTV will not be on cable and residents in Augusta, Macon, Columbus, Savannah …and all points outside Metro Atlanta will not get to see MANY of the games this year—Someone step in and do something NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, all, for the warm welcome! I’m glad I brought back some good memories.

I think we’ve got a special team this year, too, and it’s going to be a lot of fun watching this season with all of you.

To answer a few questions:

bballnut: I’m touched by the proposal, but there is a Mr. Chop Chick (and a little Chopper, too).

Glen: Those names do, indeed, ring some bells. And Bruuuuuuce Benedict was one of my faves, too.

As PEPr said, I am a WIREGRASS girl … from down near Dothan (about 20 miles north of there on 231).

And thanks for the invite, fritz pfab. I’ll keep that in mind.

Things that excite me

  1. A chop chick from ‘Bama. Even better if she is an Auburn fan????

  2. Jordan Schaffer

  3. Juir Jurgens (no idea how to spell it.

  4. Diaz hitting .450 during Spring.

I love the fact I was not the only one who had to listen to the radio growing up. (I am 28.)

I remember staying up all night to listen the guys call the game when the Braves came back and beat the Phillies 9-8 after getting 7 in the 9th and winning in the 18th after Mike Stanton got his 2nd hit and threw 4 scoreless innings. I think that was 95 because Doug Jones was the Phils closer. Maybe 94?? Bill Pecota was going to pitch the next inning and I think either Smoltz or Glavine was going to play left if Stanton did not knock in Deon Sanders.

I lived out in black belt close to Selma, AL and did not get cable until the first DirecTV came out. I remember when that dish technology first came out I had an old, old 13 inch rabbit ear TV and I could get the negative feeds of ESPN and TBS. White jerseys were black, the ball was blue, and the braves red jersey lettering was blue, etc. It was awful, but I could hit a button and them game would look black and white. Every once and a while a bad storm on the weekend would make the picture come in perfect color. Those were a thrill. Then we got a dish and it was ON.

I love the braves. If gas stays under 4 bucks, and a couple of work trips fall my way I may get to 8-10 games in person like I did last year.

GO BRAVOS.

Ahh, the good ol’ days. I really started following the Braves in 1984 when my parents handed down this 13” B&W TV that only got the UHF stations b/c the VHF tuner was broken. Those were the days….Rick Mahler part of that all night game in 1985, Gene Garber, Dale Murphy, Skip Carey praying for the old “two-out lightning” to strike again. And I had such a crush on Tom Glavine. My three younger brothers didn’t know what to do with a sister who knew more about baseball than they did…LOL!

One of my fond childhood memories is that the Braves organization used to reward really smart kids who got good grades with free tickets to a couple of games during the season. Yes, I was one of those nerdy kids who got good grades, but it was great to see the Braves for free.

I also miss the old A-FC stadium days when the little leaguers used to get to go march on the field on the night the whole ballfield went to the pro-game.

Ahh, the memories of the Braves. Sadly, I moved out of Atlanta a couple of years ago for my job. My family is still there, and I catch at least one game a year when I’m back in town.

Welcome New Chop Chick! I hope the Braves provide us all many, many, MANY more years of great memories.

What excites me is possibly having a CF (or two) who put effort into the game and not just show up.

Andruw was an above average CF to be sure, but with a little more work and effort he might have been one of the best EVER. His career in Atlanta, while good, was still disappointing.

Now we have a choice of an absolute go-getter in Kotsay, or a true leadoff hitter with speed in Anserson. Kotsay plays like Lemke used to and sadly, his body has been worn down over the years for doing so. I would rather have an average player with heart over a better player who just shows up. Anderson looks like something we have been lacking since Furcal left, a leadoff hitter with true speed (no offense to KJ, but he isn’t a blazer).

Speaking of effort, if I hear any more comments on TV about how Chuck James doesn’t even study his opponents I will scream. Why make a point out of someone not doing their job? It might be one thing if James was actually pitching beyond his expectations, but at this point he has been a colossal disappointment. Study up Chuck, or don’t let the door hit you on the way out. We have enough arms now that I am sure Mr. Wren won’t hesitate to move someone who doesn’t put forth the effort.

Things I’m excited about:

1) To see if Kotsay can rejuvenate his career. With Francouer and him in the outfield…there won’t be too many guys that will try to stretch a single into a double, or score from second.

2) Jurrjens. I was excited when we picked him up, and even more excited to see that he has real command of his pitches. He’s a control artist and works efficiently, kind of like a pitcher we used to have a few years ago…

3) Excited to see what kind of season KJ can have now that he is completely healthy.

Welcome CC! I, too, first became a fan of the Bravos in the late 70’s in south Alabama. Glad to have you aboard. I’m excited about the prospect of a great season with the ‘kids’, the new pitching, and other up and comers all rolled into one team.

G.Rhone and Glen: Royster and Garber? I hear ya! Yeah, I used to practice the Garber side-arm on the little league mound. And Jerry Royster? Remember his homerun on a bunt? I think against the Reds in about ‘79-‘80. We were down 4-0 and scored 13 in the ninth, or something like that. Good memories! Don’t forget Glen Hubbard, too. Best defensive 2nd baseman I have ever seen.

I’m thinking about going to a Braves spring training game this Saturday the 15th. Unfortunately it’s a split squad, and both of the games are in Kissimeee. I just don’t know which one to go to, is there any way I could view the lineup before I buy tickets? Anyone have any suggestions on which I should go to? Thanks
