A lip-smackin’ NL Feast

I’m as thrilled as all y’all are that the Tomahawks are an MLB-best 7-1. We rock. Yes, we do. We rule the baseball world. Let it be known that our Braves are back, baby - in black ‘n’ blue, pummeling all wannabes. Beasts of the NL East, that is us.

But look at our schedule and ask yourself: Should we NOT be 7-1?

Some would say no. No, we should not. That the Queens of NY are baaaaaad and the Liberty Belles swore they’d put us in our place this year, oh yes they would. I mean, J-Ro SAID so; dude PROMISED. Certainly that makes it for sure, right? Speaking of Mr. Wright, isn’t he supposed to be a Braves-killa? Maybe the pressure of all those marriage proposals scrawled in glitter marker on posterboard at Shea are getting to him.

No way, no day are the New York JV Squad and the Jimmy Rollins Gum-Phlappers easy marks for the Bravos or any team. It’s early in the season and who knows? Maybe we caught them on a bad ESPN day, like when they’d been fighting with Steve Phillips. You know how it is when lovers quarrel.

After taking 14 straight division titles and then, for the first time, failing to clinch, Atlanta’s experiencing a sensation we haven’t truly felt in years and perhaps that’s why the Tomahawks have charged out of the gate so spectacularly when the high rollers were betting on other horses who looked so fabulous on paper. It’s why we’re dominating our division right now in the early going. It’s why I hope we’ll go Sopranos Monopoly on our sworn rivals and own everything in NL EastLand from Marvin Gardens to Park Place, plus all utilities and railroads, before the dog days of August roll around.

Our horses are hungry. Let’s strap on the NL East feedbag and let ‘em feast.

I think last year kinda put a bad taste in JS, Bobby, Chipper, Andruw, and Smoltz. I think you’ll see a little more attention to detail that we haven’t seen in years. I hope they keep playing this way through the season! It’s still early.

Between last year ending the streak, the new bullpen and the Baby Braves so used to winning and going through last year Franc and McCann want to win again and they’re showing the heart and toughness in doing so. I feel a trip to the NLCS if they keep their heads in it.

The Braves know how to win. Anybody who bets against them is an imbecile. The thing is, it’s so fashionable to pick the Mets or the Phils. Hell, these guys look good, they talk good, and they’re from the places where the writing is supposed to be good, right? The North. But none of this talk about who is the best really matters. It’s April. Hey, how many months are in a baseball year? Let’s see, one, two, ok! SEVEN! Pay no attention to genies and bookies. This is going to be a fun year to watch. Are you even watching? I have been. We are kicking butt! Let’s basque in the glory, let’s shout for our team, let’s get to the stadium. Hell, Braves fans, where are you? Are you that poor you can’t get a gosh-darn ticket? Hell, I wish I could be near enough to buy one. Enough said.

Bravesfan69, I hear ya. The attendence for the Nationals series has been horrid. We should put 20,000 at least in the stands every night. It really upsets me. I hope it doesn’t effect the teams’ spirits. One reason our attendence is so low is because Atlanta is full of transient workers. There are not a whole lot of born and raised Atlantians left. I wish that the Braves could somehow reach out to the African-American community and get them in the seats. Anyway, lets go BRAVES!!!Keep it going Redman!!!!

grahamdawg, That is the one thing that really ticks me off, out of a population of over 5 million people in the metro atlanta area and turner field hold around 50,000 that would mean that if 1 out of 100 people went to the game, we would sell out every game, and with deals like 2 for 1 tickets on tuesday and wednesday, and our great deals on tickets, I don’t see why this can’t be done. Any where else in the nation that has a team that is 7-1, the games would be sold out, as well as consecutive divisoin titles. lets just hopew we can chalk up the bad attendance numbers to the weather.

No surprise in my house that the Braves are better than NY or Philly. Sure the Mets have a deep lineup with Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Delgado, LoDuca and Alou, but any idiot knows that the lineup that really matters is Glavine, El Dookie, and pray for Pedro to heal before August. They have a great closer in Wagner, but lost their main setup guy in Duaner Sanchez. So they are dangerous if you run say a Mark Redman out to the mound, but not so much when you have a Smoltz, Hudson, James, or (who’d of thunk) a Kyle Davies out there. And the Phillies don’t have nearly the lineup as the Mets, have a terrible bullpen and only go three deep in their rotation with Myers, Hamel, and Moyer. So with a rebuilt bullpen, rededicated Tim Hudson, healthy Davies and a very deep lineup with Rent, the Jones’, McCann, and Francoeur, why would the Braves not be a threat?

Hey:

The Braves team and marketing this year is not addressed to the locals. If it were they would have signed more quality African Americans on their team. This team is built to attract suburban whites who have the mony to pay to attend games, purchase food and drinks, and pay for parking on a consistant basis. Many blacks in Atlanta are barely making ends meet. They are the “blue collar” workers who, when they attend a Brave game, they really appreciate the affair and enjoy the Tomma Hawk Choppin more than any else. They are for real at the game and do not take it in as a social, white collar outing. Braves marketing should tend to these fans and their family. Build the aptomoshere from there and everything else will follow. Including suburban fans. The fan base must come from the locals in the immediate Atlanta metropolitan area.

Barry; Your post is nuts. Can you honestly tell me that you picture JS, Bobby Cox and the other Braves folks sitting around a table talking about the need to sign an African American to attract fans? That would be an insult to the player - “Ummm we want to sign your client Mr. Agent, because he is Black and we need more blacks so that we can attract more Blacks to the games - oh can he play baseball?” Are you kidding me? These guys sign baseball players that fit the Atlanta Braves team and team concept. Period. And you also insult African Americns by suggesting that they can not afford the games - that only White, White collar suburbanites can afford to attend on a regular basis? You mean the City of Atlanta, Ga. doesn’t have an influential African American population? I would think that that would not be the case. Also you say that Blacks are “Blue Collar” another insult to the hundreds of thousand White collar workers. And I also suggest to you that the Whites in attendance are having just as much fun doing the Chop as any other demographic group. You also say that the fan base has to be from the downtown metro base? What base? The stadium is not in the best demographic area. It’s near and surrounded by crime areas. Traffic is absurd getting to and from the games - even riding MARTA. Then you have to pay to park, concessions are terrible and over priced. Maybe that is why people don’t show up. maybe it’s because school is still in. maybe it’s because its on a week day. maybe its because it was cold and rainy. Thousands of tickets are avaialable for less than 10 bucks. Anyone can afford to go to the game. You can go for less than 50 bucks if you sty away from concessions. The sport is suffering from a lack of young Black baseball players across America because there are too many other outlets for young Blacks to particpate. ML Baseball as a whole has to do a better job reconnecting with young Blacks. The Braves marketing staff does not have to market any specific demographic. They have to market the game. The team will draw nearly 3 million this year. They keep winning and tht number will surpass 3 million. The game is the thing. the tem is he thing. I respect your thoughts, but as you can see I 100% disagree with your hypothisis.

I don’t know about everyone else but I don’t think its right to compare the Sopranos to the ATLANTA BRAVES. Not even just a little bit.

I for one think its time to quit glorifying criminals, I HAVE NEVER WATCHED THE SHOW!!

Your are insulting good people by throwing major league ball players in with murderers!!!

I’m sure John Schuerholz just loves being compared to a gangster.

Are we that shalllow that we cannot come up with a respectable comparison.

Oh yea, nice guys finish last.

Well fortunately for Atlanta, that’s not true.

I didn’t mean to start a race discussion. God knows, we’ve had enough of that lately with all the Imus talk. I just wish that we had fans like the Cubs, Redsox, Astros, etc…other cities would kill for our sucess. The fans that go to the games don’t even make any noise. I guess the city of Atlanta has been spoiled through the years. I also think that the majority of black people don’t really care about baseball.

It’s true we have low attendance numbers. Nobody’s arguing about that. The white-black thing: well, baseball has always traditionally drawn the white folk, but I’m talking just numbers, yeah? Atlanta is, and always will be, a multicultural city. Heck, I was watching the game, and I coulda sworn I saw some latinos in the crowd. They were hooping and hollering with the best of them. It’s not about money or anything else. It’s 2007 folks, let’s not get caught up in the race aspect. I just think folks from Atlanta are a different breed. I wish more would show up, but heck, when was my last game? Maybe 1998? I wish I could go to a game now. But I can’t. Anybody who lives in Atlanta, or is from Atlanta, will understand what I’m saying when I say “it’s not a race thing”. And if you live in Atlanta now, man, GO TO A GAME. Hell, we’ve been through enough. Let’s leave this post for baseball. And the Braves. And man, aren’t they looking like a team that will win it all?

Cam Cameron,

I live in Alpharetta. I was a Braves fan until they turned their backs on me in 1994. Screw the whole organization. When you step back and look objectively at it, you realize that in a league where there is no cap on your spending, and you played for over a decade in the worst division in baseball, what they accomplished was really very miniscule. Just like you realize that all Red Sox fans are whiney punks, and then you start rooting for teams like the Yankees who actually accomplish things. Dont you have an NFL team to go coach?

Atlanta fans not showing up for games goes way beyond race, and goes even beyond baseball. The only regular sporting events in Georgia that enjoy consistent fan support are UGA football and NASCAR. Every other sports team has to deal with the bandwagon, regardless of the racial makeup of the team. The Hawks are almost entirely black and have an All-Star and a slam dunk champion on their team — ask them how their attendance is doing. Ask the Falcons how good their fan support was before Michael Vick came to town. I don’t follow hockey, but I’m sure before this season the Thrashers had similar things to say about attendance. The Braves are no exception. Bottom line is, every Atlanta sports team plays host to a fan base that gets national criticism for their fickleness and lack of support. If you ask me, too many ATLiens are jealous of the salaries that pro athletes earn, and spend too much time whining about player salaries instead of enjoying the games.

Considering how cheap Braves tickets are compared to the other sporting events in this city (where else can you get an upper level seat for 6 bucks?) it’s a shame that the Braves don’t draw over 30,000 per game.

James James, my friend, oh James! There is no WAS or WERE when it comes to being a BRAVES fan. Yeah, I disowned my team, hell, beat my furniture into submission time and time again. But let’s talk facts dude. Worst division in baseball? Hello, my friend. They, the Braves (and the best of BASEBALL) were part of the best freaking race in MLB history with the Giants in the West. Remember, before the division series, etc? The Braves outlasted the Giants, THE GIANTS, 104 to 103. And nobody, I mean nobody, talks about the Braves as the “Team of the 90’s”. The Yankees earned that fair and square in 1999. And if you ever were a Braves fan, you would never, I mean NEVER, root for the Yankees. Heck, I like the Yankees, I watch their games, but man, I mean to be sincere to you, but dude, you mention the “Y” word, screw them! And btw, what are you talking about NFL for? GrahamDawg…You obviously have no concept of loyalty. Yes, when I was young Id stay up until 2 AM and watch the Braves get beat by pitchers like the late, not-so-great Eric Show. I was a die-hard. I would watch meaningless games in September. Why?? Because they were MY team. In August of 1994 they turned their back on me. I didnt root for other teams, I rooted for the Braves, and THEY turned their backs on ME. Why dont you go to the Yankees site and see how a real team operates? And while you’re calling me a punk, make sure you pick the garbage in front of my house Tuesday morning.

7-1 and that’s where they should be? OK, Chop Chick, you have my permission to insert your foot in your mouth, especially after watching your “mighty Bravos” fall to the Nats with only 2 hits…and with Smoltz on the mound, no less! Umm, if you haven’t learned from last season, let me be the first to tell you that it is an incredibly long season, anything can happen, injuries can occur right out of the blue, etc. So, please, don’t count your chickens before they are hatched! Let’s not get too excited. This squad is certainly less defective than last years, but there are still big issues that will surface. First and foremost, no leadoff hitter. I like KJ, but he just doesn’t get on enough and causes ZERO fear on the basebaths. One look at Reyes and you see what kind of difference a real leadoff hitter can make. That plays a part into the real problem this team will have, which is manufacturing runs. As great a manager as Cox is, he has never been one to teach offensive fundamentals. Hitting behind runners to move them into scoring position. Sacrifices from hitters other than pitchers. Stealing bases. This inability has already showed itself this year, and it may have cost the Braves last night (McCann going the other way to ground out to 3rd with a man on 2nd and no out is INEXCUSABLE). Yes, this team is 7-2, and yes they will be better. However, to stay on top they will have to be more disciplined at the plate, and aggresive on the basepaths. We cannot keep relying on the longball to score runs, and this team simply doesn’t have the offensive talent to hit great pitching. We have to be able to fabricate runs.

By SlimG

April 13, 2007 9:37 AM | Link to this

Late comment. Bobby still doesn’t know how to use a pitching staff. Smoltz was done after six and barely made it out of the seventh. Why send him back in the eighth? Over a hundred pitches this early in the season? Just don’t see that move with our current bullpen. It hurt our confidence against the lowly Nats.

Oh yes, br, you’re absolutely right on. What do you say, fellow Braves fans? Time to toss in the towel on the Tomahawks RIGHT THIS MINUTE because we lost to the gNats last night? It’s ALL over! We’re sunk — DONE for the season!

Apologize? For a wry “Sopranos” reference? Get a sense of humor, man. Also, if you’ve never watched the show how can you truly criticize? But to make you happy, here goes. I’ll give you rewrite on that sentence that’s all warm ‘n’ fuzzy. Ready? Here it is:

“It’s why I hope we’ll go all Lord Licorice on our sworn rivals and own everything in Hasbro Candyland from Gumdrop Pass to Lollipop Woods, plus all Gingerbread Trees and Peanut Acres in between, before the dog days of August roll around.

All better now? Because if I have to break out a Hello Kitty reference, it’s gonna get ugly in here.

What happens when Lance Cormier comes back. I hope they dont send Davies back down because that would be dumb. Like I said before the season Davies is going to be great. He is a future Cy Young winner. His stuff is just as good as Maddux except Davies throws harder. I hope the Braves either moves Redman to the bullpin or send his a$$ to the minors. Granted he has alot of experience but its not good experience. His only decent year was when he was with the Marlins. Every other year his ERA has been in the high 4’s or over 5.

Who said you should apologize? I never did. You made your bed, you have to lie in it. And, yes, I get the Soprano’s joke…hardy, har, har, har. All I said was it’s WAAAAY too early to claim you’re the best. Let’s talk when it’s August or at least until the All Star break. Yes, it was nice to take 2 out of 3 from the Mets, but again, it’s early. There’s nothing wrong with being optimistic but let’s not go overboard with the “We’re the best, we’re back, we rock the world” talk, okay?

Slim you ask why put Smoltz back in in the 8th;because he had a shutout and our bullpin has been overworked. Look at the blogs from Thursday before the game. Thats all anyone was talking about. How our bullpin was going to blown out by the allstar break. Maybe Bobby should of gone to the bullpin but if he had and they blew it then you would we be saying why did he pull Smoltz who had a shutout and only given up 2 hits. Hindsight is 20-20.

If one losing game against the gNats “hurts our confidence” then we’d better get the heck out of MLB. This is a big-boy pants league, not ‘Everybody Goes To Dairy Queen After The Game Because No Matter What, We’re ALL Winners’ rec ball.

Look, br, you’re right; plenty of games to go. But can’t we enjoy the moment? Why can’t we crow a little right now? We’re not hurting anyone. Remember when it was fun to be a ball fan? Let’s have fun, win or lose. No harm, no foul in saying “We’re the best” at the particular moment when, in fact, we ARE the BEST. JMHO, though. Your mileage may vary.

Eric from MO IMO -our bullpen hasn’t been overworked but the BIG 3 have been… why keep putting them out there over and over when we do have others that can pitch (btw, McBride has no business pitching to a righty when he’s having problems early in the season like he is)… oh geeeeeez—- I just fell right into the b&m trap…

Chop Chick, what is your deal? I mean, so I disagreed with you and now you act like a little child…hmmmm! You have some serious issues that you need to address, so do us all a favor and double your dosage.

Mark Lemke, you were no Jeff Treadway. What did the Braves do to me, and all of us, in the 90’s?? They went on strike. YES..I know..EVERY team went on strike. I didnt love and follow EVERy team in the 90’s and beyond dismal 80’s. They were my team and they betrayed me, and Tom Glavine, then a brave, called the fans idiots.
