Adieu, Mr. Met

Forget Glavine. He’s old news.

Let’s move right along and leave Mr. Met to the orange and blue, shall we?

John Schuerholz. Time for him to put the old tie tack in mothballs and for the Tomahawks to cast an eye around the leagues for GM 2.0? I don’t play in any Fantasy GM online leagues so I’m not sure who the hip, young Must-Have dudes in pricey tailored button-up shirts are these days - or who’s available. We know to avoid the Steve Phillips and Dan Duquettes of the world. But the up-and-comers angling to redo the drapes in JS’s office? You tell me.

I’ll go out on a limb and take my lumps from y’all. I say the Bravos need to seriously think of the future - and I’m not talking about the “Let’s Just Make It To October” kind. If you’re going to rebuild, really rebuild. The best young upstart manager in the bigs - Joe Girardi, 2006 NL Manager of the Year - is broadcasting for YES Network in ‘07. In a perfect world, wouldn’t he be a great Cox replacement? He has no connections here, granted, but he’s 42 and who would say no to taking over the Braves? Joe G has experience managing on the cheap. Those three World Series of his speak volumes; he’s got the postseason know-how - been there, done that. Classy guy, too. We need Joe G. here. But we’ll never get him. He’s destined to duke it out in New York with The Boss, post-Torre. But we need a Joe Girardi of our own to take this team from Bobby.

Bobby Cox will someday retire. And well-deservedly so. Ditto JS. It’s likely not going to be long, folks. The Bobby & John Show has been fabulous. So much more unbelievable than we ever dreamed back in ‘91. But it’s getting long in the tooth, unfortunately.

And then, what of the Braves? We’ll have to ask, as fans, if our team was forward-thinking - planning the next long pennant/playoffs run streak - or too invested in a backwards-looking “Good Ol’ Days” mentality that left us out in the cold, among MLB competitors, before we even had a chance to open the door.
