DO it, Doggie!

WGN-TV/Chicago Tribune

Fine. I’ll admit it.

I’d LOVE to see one - just ONE - Braves starter take full-throttle batting practice on an innocent Igloo cooler in the dugout the next time some team we should pound into the Turner Field ground is about to sweep us or has a huge lead or - get this - the bullpen has blown said starter’s lead late in a game.

Don’t care which guy it is, although seeing Smoltzie or Huddy attack anything that isn’t breathing with a bat in the dugout would be my choice - just want to see that kind of fire. Just ONCE, if - God forbid - we’re blowing it bigtime.

ETA: I mean, just LOOK at Maddux in the photo above. Yeah, I just added it in here. (Oh, the joy of technology.) Doggie’s going craaa-zay on that cooler and as any good Tomahawks fan knows, that’s totally So Not Maddux. But dude… how totally KILLER is it to see the MAD in Mad Dog come out to play? Or, um, smash stuff?

And OK, so Kolb had hissy fits when he was here. Big whoop. Maddux has established himself as a proven winner who’s Hall of Fame-bound. He’s also known for his quietude in the clubhouse and on the mound - the occasional “$#@%!” single-word obscenity outburst to the sky notwithstanding. Guy like that grabs a bat and goes wackadoo on the Gatorade, his teammates take notice and understand that it means something. Guy like Kolb does it and the team likely wonders when the clubhouse kid is gonna replenish the drink supply because the cooler was nice and full and all icey-cold. In other words, nobody’s impressed.

yeah, I can’t take Maddux seriously unless he’s on the mound. The cooler incident was just too funny.

Dan Kolb went all kinds of nuts on at least three coolers last year. Seemed to do a lot of good then.

Bat justice isn’t severe enough… The punishment for blown saves should be proctology exams by the new team doctor, “Bighands” Johnson, M.D.

I haven’t seen Maddux swing a bat like that since 1998. Swing away Greg! Swing away!

I wouldn’t mind having Doggie at the 4 hole in our rotation, or 3 for that matter. Of course Doggie wouldn’t mind having Andruw patrol behind him either. John S do you need the number of the Cubs offices, I read today they’d like to send Maddux to a winner, GOD knows we could use him again.

Let’s say you are a well-paid executive chef at a four-star restaurant, and an agent says he can get you bigger money cooking at a Cracker Barrel. Would you do it? That’s why I laughed when I saw Maddux blow his cool. Welcome to life as high paid loser, Doggie. I’ll never understand why a guy like that can make such a dumb career move just so he can have 120 million instead of 100 million in the bank when he hangs them up. Money can buy happiness. Talent doesn’t have any relationship to brains. For a few million less, Maddux could still be playing for a winner and having fun, but his agent, who is obviously smarter wouldn’t be getting such fat commission checks.

Geez, give Maddux a break. He said he didn't want to go anywhere else, but the Braves didn't offer him a contract. He would have given Schuerholz the hometown discount just like he had when he signed back in the winter of 1992. We all knew that the Cubs and Yankees were offering considerably more. When he left here, the club made it clear that they were going with younger players. And not once did you hear Maddux bad-mouth the team for not resigning him. He even said that he realized that it is a business and he appreciated the time that he spent here. I wish every one of you would sit back and listen to yourselves. Just because someone goes somewhere else, you don't have to take it so personally.

B.S., Jerald. These guys never even consider where they WANT to play. They’d play for Hell’s Black Sox if they offered the biggest check. Maybe not because they want to, but certainly because their agent “advises” them to.
