Kelly, Chipper, long lines for roast beef, etc.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Philadelphia — Just a warning: The line at Tommy DiNic’s over in Reading Terminal was too long, so I settled for going the healthier route with shrimip and vegetable tempura across the way from DiNic’s. That, plus the chest cold I’m getting, has me in a pretty sour mood.
Well, not really. The tempura was outstanding (not DiNic’s outstanding, but very good nonetheless). But this chest cold irks me. Nearly made it through all of spring training and the entire season without getting sick once. Now, with five games left, I’m hacking up a lung.
But hey, let’s do this. Gonna throw a bunch of stuff in here quickly today, because I slept a little late and am already behind, and I do have a bunch of stuff I wanted to give you.
Kelly J. sizzling: Kelly Johnson’s two-run, game-tying homer last night extended his hitting streak to 20 games, longest in the National League this season.
And this isn’t one of those single-a-game hitting streaks. The Braves 2B has hit .410 (32-for-78) with 15 extra-base hits (three triples, three homers), 17 RBI and a .718 slugging percentage during this 20-game streak.
In 54 games since July 25, he’s hit .320 (62-for-194) with a .371 OBP and .505 slugging percentage (despite a cold spell in the middle of that period).
In 91 games through July 24, he hit .264 with a .335 OBP and .417 slugging percentage.
I was talking to GM Frank Wren about how some guys were playing a lot better lately, and here’s what he said about Kelly: “Kelly, the last month, has played extremely well — I think it’s shown up both offensively and defensively. He’s looked like the player that we’ve seen over the last few years and thought was coming down the pike.”
He also talked some about Francoeur and about some younger guys, and about how you can’t judge too much from September or spring training. I’ll give you that stuff later.
Also sizzling, the Phillies: They’re threatening to go into the postseason on the kind of torrid that Colorado took to the playoffs last year. The Phillies have won 10 of the last 11 games while slugging 17 homers, scoring 66 runs and holding opponents to three runs or fewer nine times in that 11-game stretch.
You all know what they’ve done to the Braves this season. It’s pretty remarkable. Won 14 of 16 games against them this season, including 13 of the past 14.
In that 14-game stretch, the Phillies have out-hit the Braves .304-.240, out-homered them 26-12, outscored them 88-55, and outpitched them 3.19-5.93. Tthe Braves scored three runs or fewer in all but four of those games.
The Braves are a stunning 2-16 against the Phillies since Sept. 26, 2007, and tonight they face Cole Hamels, who’s 6-1 with a 2.82 ERA in his past nine starts against the Braves, including 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA and .208 opponents’ average in four this season.
Good luck with that, Mike Hampton.
Power drought update: The Braves still don’t have any player with more than five home runs since the All-Star break. The Phillies have six players with at least seven homers since the break, including three with double digits: Pat Burrell (10), Jayson Werth (11), Ryan Howard (18).
The Braves still have only 25 homers all season from outfielders, which would be the fewest in two decades for any major league team’s outfielders in a full season not shortened because of a strike.
The Braves have a league-low .362 slugging percentage from outfielders, while the Nationals (.379) are the only other NL team below .413 and 13 of 16 teams are over .430.
Chipper’s title to lose: Don’t know for another hour or so whether Chipper will be in the lineup tonight, but he’s running - and walking - away with the batting title as Albert Pujols has gone into a mini-slump lately.
Chipper’s back up to .364, while Pujols has slipped to .348. It’s extremely unlikely that Pujols will catch him now with so few games remaining.
Jones, who had a pinch-hit single in the ninth inning last night, is 16-for-35 (.457) with five extra-base hits, 10 walks and a .578 OBP in 11 games since Sept. 7.
In that same span, Pujols is 11-for-49 (.224) with six extra-base hits, five walks and a .291 OBP in 13 games.
OK, that’s it. Had some other stuff, but I’m outta time. Have to catch a cab to the ballpark. This tune’s from the great album of a year or two ago by Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins, Rabbit Fur Coat.
“RISE UP WITH FISTS” by Jenny Lewis
What are you changing?
Who do you think you’re changing?
You can’t change things, we’re all stuck in our ways
It’s like trying to clean the ocean
What do you think, you can drain it?
Well it was poison and dry long before you came
But you can wake up younger under the knife
And you can wake up sounder if you get analyzed
And I better wake up
There but for the grace of God, go I
It’s hard to believe your prophets
When they’re asking you to change things
But with their suspect lives we look the other way
Are you really that pure, Sir?
Thought I saw you in Vegas
It was not pretty, but she was
But she will wake up wealthy
And you will wake up 45
And she will wake up with babies
There but for the grace of God, go I
What am I fighting for?
The cops are at the front door
I can’t escape that way, the windows are in flames
And what’s that on your ankle?
You say they’re not coming for you
But house arrest is really just the same
Like when you wake up behind the bar
Trying to remember where you are
Having crushed all the pretty things
There but for the grace of God, go I
But I still believe
And I will rise up with fists
And I will take what’s mine mine mine
There but for the grace of God, go I
There but for the grace of God, go I

DOB, I hope that you have visited Delilah’s in the Reading Terminal for some incredible mac & cheese and fried chicken in the past. And the cookie place, (is it 15th Street Cookies?), has just ridiculous chocolate chip cookies.
Anyway, this late season run by some of these players will hopefully give Wren more tradable assets. Personally, I’m not convinced that guys like Josh Anderson, Prado or Infante are anything more than platoon players on a post-season contender. Next season, if they fully recover, the Braves may have a ridiculously nasty bullpen. Of course, that assumes that Cox doesn’t pitch 1-2 of them every game.

Afternoon folks,
Heading over to the park myself in a few minutes. I’ve got a few additional thoughts before I head out.
In terms of the play at the plate last night, I had a good perspective from my seat. Prado made the backhand grab and that took him closer to the line. In that situation, he had no choice but to throw a little more left of Sammons than he normally would to avoid the runner. Regardless, everyone is right in that the point is moot.
I haven’t seen a bunt attempt from a batter in the four hole before Infante tried last night. Not that it was wrong of Infante to try it, just not used to seeing that from that part of the batting order.
Why make such a big deal about replay and then not use it in a situation that clearly called for it? Not sure who the crew chief is for the crew that worked last night’s game (the MLB site lists Holbrook on Gerry Davis’ crew, Kellogg and Wegner on Ed Montague’s crew and Fairchild is MIA), so perhaps these guys got put together due to illness or vacations and aren’t used to working together.
Anyway, time to head out and see what unfolds tonight. The road gets much tougher with Hamels on the hill for the Phils.

Chipper’s not in the initial lineup. I’m headed down to clubhouse now, I’ll see if they have a backup lineup in case he can play.
No Escobar, either.
The lineup: 1. Josh A., 2. Prado, 3. Kelly J., 4. McCann, 5. Infante (LF), 6. Francoeur, 7. Kotchman, 8. Small Bridge, 9. Hampton.

Today’s good blog is really above and beyond, DOB. Before I retired I really hated to go in to work when I was sick… so hat’s off to you today.
Speaking of Puhols, what do you make of his slump? I know he’s had physical problems this year and that his right elbow is really barking. He’s such a great player but I’ve noticed that the last couple of years have been below the tremendously productive first 4 or so years he had. Could he be past him prime already? I hope not but a certain centerfielder we all know began his descent before he hit 30.

Mats fans are just beside themselves. From Metsblog -
“I don’t post alot on here, but I did something I have NEVER done at a Mets game, Shea or on the road. I left early. I go to 30-40 games every year, I’ve been there till the last out of a couple of double digit blowouts this year alone, but last night I couldn’t take it anymore. I walked out after Castillio had the great rally killing 6-4-3 in the 6th. Its the same story as last year. This team is dead.
Honestly, what motivation is there for the Mets fan to support their team? In 2005 they were a 1/2 game out of the Wild Card going into September, and they had a dredful September. 2006 after rolling all season long, they come up small in one of the worst games in Mets history. We all know what happened in 07, and I went to about 4 games the last week of that year, ready to cheer my heart out to get them into the playoffs.
I’m sorry but I just don’t have anything left anymore, and I’m sure alot of fans are the some way. I’ve given this team everything the past 3 years, and have gotten nothing but heartbreak every single year, getting worse each year. It’s the same crap all over again. The team has no life no matter what the crowd is doing.
They had a 4 game lead 13 days ago!!!!!!!
And yet people wonder why Mets fans are p** off and boo and don’t show up? It’s because its the same crap over and over again. Why should we pay good money to see what we all know is going to happen? Of course I’m still going to 3-4 of the 6 remaining games because for some reason I still want to, but with the crap they have pulled year after year, theyre lucky they haven’t started a riot at Shea yet.”
And this beauty -
“Games 2 and 7 of the NLCS I did. Ok so Mota gives up a game tying double and Wagner blows the game open in the 9th. Whatever, its baseball, I’ll take it. But game 7. After that catch…then killing the ensuing rally that would have all but got them to the WS, then after the C@ckpunch of Molinas HR, then after loading the bases with 2 outs in the bot of the 9th, having the man who you want to have up strikeout looking to end your season.. if that’s not heartbreak, I don’t know what is.”
If they lose tonight, some people in NY will be jumping out of windows, and it won’t be on Wall Street”

I just saw the replay of the play at the plate last night.
I was listening on radio.
That was a terrible play by Clint. We might as well put Gregor Blanco back there.
Could you have anybody smaller and less physical than Clint Sammons?
And if it wasn’t for him and Jeff Bennett’s retarded incarnation last night, we could have won that game.
It sounded like after the throwing error by Bennett that he got a double play ball from Utley. Don’t you love it when that happens.
We should have been out of the inning and then won by two with the homerun that was taken from McCann.
Terrible terrible.

Greg Why make such a big deal about replay and then not use it in a situation that clearly called for it?
Not too sure myself, but I have a pretty good idea:
If they would have gotten the out at the plate in the eighth, that woulda been out #2, then when Ohman came in after that and got Howard out, the inning would have ended without any runs scoring.
If that would have been the case, with the game tied 2-2, I think they would have reviewed it. But 6-2…

AdirondackDave, I wouldn’t make too much of Pujols’ slump. It’s a little over two weeks. If Pujols is bad for a month or two, maybe three, then maybe we should read into it.
It may be just a natural slump that players go through or it may be the injury or some combination.
Go back to the beginning of September and Pujols has posted a .354 on-base and a .551 slugging. His batting average on balls in play is .203. He’s still got plenty of homers and doubles so it looks like his other would-be singles aren’t finding holes as often this month as in past months.
Probably a combination of being worn down by the injury, bad luck, facing Cubs pitching and defense six times this month, a natural slump.

Shaun — Yes, you’re probably right about Puhols current problem with the stick. Injuries, fatigue, opposition pitchers, etc. this time of year could all be factors. But take a look at the last couple years compared to his first four (if I remember correctly). Wouldn’t this modest decline be a concern to Puhols and the Cards?

AdirondackDave, I doubt it is a concern. He’s got as many homers and doubles as in other months in fewer games. And this year in total, he’s been about as good or better than he’s ever been. Last year was a little bit of a down year but he was still outstanding.
Even if he declines next season, which maybe we should expect a little, he’ll still be amazing, assuming he’s healthy.
The Cardinals and Pujols’ only concern should be staying healthy and in shape (insofar as they can control such things). If they do that, Pujols will be just fine for, at the very least, five or six more seasons.

Jeff Bennett catches a lot of crap on here (and yes, that was a pretty sloppy error last night), but the guy has given us 93 IP, a 3.86 era, for $400K.
Out of the ‘pen, a 3.29 era in 76+ innings.
Take 12 pitchers doing that, and for $4.8 mil, you’ve got one of the best pitching staffs in baseball (that’s exaggerating the point, of course - but the point being, Jeff Bennett is not part of the problem. He’s been a bright spot for the Braves this year).
Like a lot of our pitchers, he’s been forced into roles - starting, pitching the 8th or 9th inning - that he’s probably not suited for. He’s been brilliant in innings 5-7, which ought to be his role.
I see him as a valuable middle reliever for the next couple of years.

DOB;
I only saw the play on mlb.com without a replay but surely with Prado fielding the ball near the 3rd base line Sammons has to set up inside the diamond to give the third baseman a clear target. If he blocks the plate the runner will then be between Sammons and Prado and the 3rd baseman either can’t throw or if he does there’s a fair chance the ball will hit the runner.

Mark, A difference of opinion is one thing, and that is acceptable. However, Terrence Moore’s column today concerning the relationship between Hank Aaron, Chipper Jones and Bobby Cox is disrespectful and unacceptable. His column was based on hate. It is almost as if he challenging the AJC to terminate him, but he knows they are afraid to do so. I know you don’t have the power to do pull that trigger. Suppose he hits 3 more (just supposin’ not sayin’ he has to)…then he be tied for second place for most doubles in a season by a catcher…if he hits four more, he’s in second all by himself.
But I’ll be happy with number 40.

Too bad that Chipper can’t go. I’m sure he doesn’t want to win the batting title that way, and I know he’s a competitor and wants to be in there everyday.
I had hopes that JJJ would win 15 games his rookie year, but now that’s gone. Still, he’s done remarkably well given the circimstances, going from the 5th starter to our number 1 here at the end.

I posted similar thoughts on the Moore article…
I don’t care for Terrance Moore, but when a Braves official (a “Senior Vice President”, no less) calls a writer for the local paper, and wants to vent against his bosses (team management), it is news and should be reported. I thought Terrance wrote a fairly balanced piece on it, leaving plenty of room for the reader to make his decision on who’s right and who’s wrong.
Again, if Aaron was just some old player, it might not be news. But he’s a Braves executive, which makes it well worth reporting…. IMO, of course.

N Nine, I think he’ll be back for at least one more year, but so much of what his record will be depends on the team. As a No. 5 starter on a powerhouse team, Maddux might win 12-15 games. As a mid-rotation starter for a crap team, maybe 8-9 games.

Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Justin Verlander(bad year), Justin Duchscherer, Edwin Jackson, and Zack Greinke.
There has been talk about Garland as a FA pickup. He’s ERA is near 5. He is going through worst year in k/per inn. His W-L is supported by the best lineup. Not feeling good about this guy anymore.

Jim, what would that be, an assistant hitting coach? They just re-hired their current hitting coach for next season.
Besides, you like his work with the Padres, or what? They’re last in the NL with a .317 OBP, tied for 14th in average (.250) and 15th in slugging (.391).

I’m not some ignorant racist, so this has nothing to do with that, but all this Aaron-Cox thing is ALOT deeper than just who saw Chipper’s future back then! It’s more than likely Aaron’s view on blacks that HAVEN’T been on the Braves and he thinks Cox might have something to do with that or he could do more to change the situation! Just my opinion

Many people are not happy with Terence Moore article, but something is true: Bobby and the coaches (specially Pendelton) are not doing a good job since last year and to fix this team a big change is needed, the way it is now simply is not working, despite of the many injuries we had.

From what I hear, the kid Small took ADD medication without prior approval.
Again, he’s a low-level guy, not a prospect. But here’s what he’s done so far in rookie ball:
Small, a Massachusetts native, signed with the Braves as a non-drafted free agent in May 2007 out of Lake City (Fla.) Community College, and has spent two seasons with rookie-league teams.
He was 1-2 with a 2.55 ERA in 13 relief appearances this season, after going 0-3 with a 4.91 ERA in 10 appearances for the Gulf Coast League Braves in 2007.
In two seasons, Small has 45 strikeouts with 12 walks and 28 hits allowed in 32-1/3 innings.

KJ needs to move far back and to his left (AKA: RF).
If this offensive burst is more than a dead cat bounce (albeit when it doesn’t matter) then put him in RF this winter to prepare.
I would like to see Dunn in RF and Bradley or Burrell in LF but short of that KJ in RF or LF with Dunn taking the other spot would still be an upgrade to what we have today.

How is wanting the guy to take a better approach at the plate ripping him ncscoots? Last time I checked it’s hurt him. They have flat out exploited the guy this year because of that. The only way he will get better is to take a better approach. I don’t know if you’re extra sensitive to any comment on Jeff because so many people have ripped him this year but I believe i’ve stated on past blogs that I believe that Jeff will bounce back from this year and i’m not ready to give up on him yet. I want the guy to finish strong and he has been better this month. That doesn’t hide the fact that he still has a lot to learn and I hope he does because like I said it only makes him better.

Wren and most GM’s know you cannot staff a team based on what players do in ST or September (if they are out of it).
Sure both periods can give you an idea or hope of what may come but how guys perform over the season especially under pressure is what matters.
This team had lost of injuries but it also folded like a deck chair on far too many occasions and those character building moments were not all due to injuries.
It is great what KJ is doing and I don’t hate him one iota but we cannot ignore anyone’s performance when it did matter - June/July in particular.
Guys who step up then and during the heat of a post season race are called impact players.
The Braves are woefully light on impact players and for that matter guys who can stay healthy.
So hats off to KJ for an amazing September but like guys up and down the bench where was this offensive output when it matter?

Is it just me, or is it just a tad bit annoying to see clips of Frenchy throwing the football around immediately after his 3rd weak AB of the night? I mean, let’s think about this one…..7 pitches. 7 swings. 3 easy outs. Then I gotta see shots of him frolicking around the field prior to the game? Maybe he did actually put in the necessary thought and homework to face Hamels today. But those clips of him having fun with a football sure do look bad when its more than obvious that his approach to the game of baseball resembles that of your average football player.

Not comparable. The Braves are facing teams, like the Mets and Phillies, who are truly trying to win. Spring training games really are totally meaningless, but not regular season games against teams trying to get into the playoffs.
So hats off to KJ for an amazing September but like guys up and down the bench where was this offensive output when it matter?
He was still one of the league’s top-tier offensive second baseman before September 2008.
Prado’s good play started in August when the Braves were out of it. I don’t see anyone saying anything about that. You know why? ‘Cause it is dumb.

Braves offense has been respectable all year, and even better since Tex left. We’ve averaged right at 4.75 runs/game since July 30 (first day without Tex). And that’s including substantial time missed by Chipper, Yunel and Kotchman.
Put one good slugger in this lineup, let KJ, Yunel and Kotchman grow into their prime, and it’s more than good enough. We just need a couple of solid starting pitchers.
btw, if Hampton doesn’t look like he’s worth 6-8 mil, I don’t know who does. He’s a pro who keeps his composure when things get tough and keeps the ball down. I’d rather have him than a lot of the guys being mentioned for more money.

Jake, I don’t know, man, it sure sounded like a rip to me. And six weeks ago, the kid would have deserved every centimeter of it.
But, just as another poster above took him to task for two Ks against Hamels (when only about 300 other ML hitters have looked bad against the guy this year), many here just ignore the strides he HAS made in the last few weeks. A guy gets bashed when he stinks? I got no problem with that (mostly). Keep bashing the guy when he’s started to turn it around? That’s low. Not to mention unobservant.
And, yes, I know you’re on record with your thoughts about his future potential, and I know you’re not just pitching dirt because you happen to have a shovel. I didn’t take your post that way, at all.

Hampton has been the braves best pitcher for the last 4 weeks or so.
The Braves should definately consider bringing him back, IMO.
What’s to lose? They get 2 new starters, still have JJJ, Hampton, Campillo to round out the rotation. They’ll have Hampton back at the end of the year. They’ll have Smoltz in the bullpen.
They can even move Campillo to the rotation for long relief if they decide to keep Morton in the rotation, or bring up Hanson/Medlen/Marek . If either of those 3 prove to be ready next year, they can trade Hampton or even Hudson to a contender.
For the cost it would take to keep Hampton, they should definitely do it.

Sure is good to see Jeff Francoeur getting his average up; I know its late in the season, but it has to be good for the kid’s confidence to opst a .300 or better BA in the last month of the season. I’m pulling for that.
I’m also gonna go on record for being for re-signing Hampton to an incentive-laden deal next season. Sure, we don’t count on him, but the way he’s pitched since he came back, I’d rather he be doing nothing on our DL than doing this in somebody else’s rotation.
Sure it’s a risk, but it’s a minimal one, and the market’s gonna be tenuous towards him, anyhow, I’d think.
Besides, if he’s this capable next year and can stay this healthy, that’s one less 2009 “necessity” to cover. Get a big marque free agent starter and a “hits-for-average” LF and see a continued improvement out of Jeff Francoeur, and we should be alright, ya know?

caballo muerto, I don’t think that signing Hampton is a bad deal at all. I’d suspect that he would only command a contract of around 2MM with incentives, so if he gets injured, or sucks, we’re really not out anything, and he’s just as likely to be a very effective 4th/5th guy as he is to get hurt. Heck, he’s probably capable of being much better than that anyway.
To me, it’s a worthwhile gamble. Low risk, high reward. As long as Morton and Hanson aren’t traded, I think we’ll have capable replacements in AAA if he is injured or ineffective. I’m not saying I don’t think he won’t get hurt, but I think it’s probably a well-calculated risk if he can be had cheaply.

Tomas Excellent point on the bullpen, if we can keep them healthy and intact. I also think that Campillo might be a swing man for the pen, if we are able to reinforce the rotation. And, you didn’t mention Boyer, who pitched very well until he got completely worn out by overuse.
To be honest, I really don’t like the way Bobby and Roger use their pen most times. If a guy can’t get out lefty’s and righty’s, he should be jettisoned. Too many one/two out appearances. I personally believe that is harder on a guys arm than 1-2 innings every 2-3 days.
And BTW, we definitely baby our starters too darned much. We accept 5-6 innings out of them too often, and they STILL get injured. Too darned much concern for pitch counts. Take the guy out when he gives out of gas.
Let’s hope the earlier Jo Jo shows up tomorrow night. I am darned tired of trading away guys with “potential”. Lets develop some of these guys into real starters (Reyes, Morton, James, Parr, Hanson, Medlen, etc)

Re-sign Hampton. Jurrjens, Hampton, Campillo with either Sheets or Sabathia’s a damn good start, especially when ya throw in our returning bullpen arms (Moylan, Soriano, with Gonzalez).
Gimme that, a LF who hits for average w/out striking out a bunch, and we’ll figure out the 5th starter situation with AA/AAA guys and if we get anything from Smoltz or Hudson down the road, all the better; I think that’s a good foundation for a much more successful 2009.
And we got the $$$ to do it.

Putting Hampton back on the rotation? One key mistake by the Braves the past two seasons was relying on Mike to secure a rotation spot. Are you ok with risking this again? Yes, he is younger than Smoltz and Glavine. The contract would have to adjust on inn. pitched and he might get better offers. I think we leave the option open but focus on better and younger arms. Anyone else have a problem with Hampton’s comment in the game story? He talked about how the braves have always had his back no matter what but when it came to possibly coming back he said “we’ll see.” How bout something like I’ll play for whatever they’ll offer me or I want to find a way to be here next year and repay my debt to the organization for never giving up on me

Great one run road win by the braves. Best thing about tonight, Braves win, beat the Phils. Second best, Yankess eliminatd from payoffs. Still hate the Saux, just slightly less than the stankees.
Just one or two observations…
1) KJ’s Defense has improved throughout the year, especially turning the DP and coming in on slow rollers.
2) KJ will bobble or fumble or make a bone head play almost once per game…. You just hope it doesn’t lead to runs.
3) JF is hitting 288/345/425 in Sept, with 1 HR and 6 doubles. Is this good enough to give him the RF job out of ST next year? Given we need a LF and 2 starting pitchers, I say yes. Keep him and KJ, and don’t trade our top prospects in the minors.
4)I really like the way our bullpen is starting to shape up for next season. Gonzo, Moylan, Acosta, Bennett, then maybe, Smoltz and Ohman. With J Julio, Stockman, and maybe another AAA/FA arm or two in case of injuries/suckiness.
Yankees suck. GO BRAVES

Cox said Hampton can pitch Sunday’s game if he wants to, the season finale. Jurrjens’ turn, but he’s thrown 188 innings, more than 40 over his previous high.
Hampton said that’s up to Jurrjens entirely. He’ll talk to him to see what J.J., but you could tell Hampton wasn’t comfortable with the idea of Jurrjens feeling any pressure to step aside. He won’t make him feel that way.
I asked Hampton about the possibility of returning next season, if the Braves have any interest:
“We’ll see,” he said. “This organization has been great to me. They hung in there through some pretty bad times, some low points in my career. They’ve always had my back, showed me loyalty. We’ll see.”
Cox on Hampton tonight:
“Hampton got his cutter [cut fastball] back tonight – it was dynamite,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said of the veteran, who had been 0-2 in his past six games despite a 3.83 ERA and five quality starts in that span.
“Hampton keeps pitching against the toughest pitchers,” Cox said. “He wanted Johan Santana [Sept. 13] in New York. He loves pitching against the best.”

Oh, and here’s what he said when I asked him if he had any thoughts about it being possibly his last start for the Braves:
“I don’t. There’s just too much left up in the air. Who knows what’s going to happen. I can’t play scenarios. I’ve just got to go out there and pitch, and prove to everybody that I can still do it. I know I can, and hopefully there’s people out there that like what they see.”

By the way, all those who always ask why no pitchers got hurt on Leo’s watch: How ‘bout Hampton?
Knee surgery in 2004, herniated disk and Tommy John elbow surgery in 2005.
Not to mention Smoltz’s multiple elbow surgeries (four) before McDowell arrived.
And Paul Byrd’s Tommy John surgery…
These are just off top of my head, guys since I’ve been here.
Are those smudges on Leo’s record? Not one iota. Absolutely not. Just as it’s silly to link Roger’s throwing program to the multiple pitching injuries this season, including two to veterans in their 40s.

Evening everyone…
Walking out of the men’s room at Citizen’s Bank Wiffleball Park tonight and holding it open for a Phillies fan who thanked me before realizing the t-shirt and hat I was wearing, then muttered “Braves suck”.
Guess the joke’s on him tonight.
Mike Hampton pitched really well tonight, and it’s getting to the point where the Braves are really going to have to consider signing him to a modest contract in 2009.
Great snag by Martin Prado over the railing of the Braves dugout to retire Pat Burrell and end the third inning. That’s huge since it left the bases loaded and ended the biggest threat the Phillies would mount in the night’s festivities.
Second straight night a pickoff play goes awry, this one in our favor. Nice to get that break and it’s nice to get a one run road victory.
McFann: Definitely know where you’re coming from there, however I’ll play devil’s advocate and say the score shouldn’t matter. In fact, it would have made a 6-2 game much more snug at that point. I did get some shots of B-Mac both inside and outside the cage tonight during BP. If you’re interested, let me know. If we both ask nicely, Lew might be okay with me sending them to him and then he can forward them on to you.

Mike from LA, nice attempt to reshape your original comment and make my response look out of line, regarding Hampton’s quote about waiting to see about returning to the Braves (as in, he’ll wait to see, first of all, if they’re even interested).
You initially said: “… How bout something like I’ll play for whatever they’ll offer me or I want to find a way to be here next year and repay my debt to the organization for never giving up on me.”
And I said you’re dreaming. Meaning, you’re dreaming if you think a veteran player, who got hurt repeatedly WHILE DOING HIS JOB, should then tell the team that he’ll play for whatever they want to pay him in the future to “repay my debt to the organization…”
Huh? Repay his debt? For getting hurt while pitching? For not healing properly?
There, that’s a coherent reply. Oh, and I’ll leave the name-calling to you. Nice touch. Always endearing.

This is for all the SMART GM’s out their who took a pass on Mike Hampton at the trading deadline.
The lefty is 2-2 with an ERA of 3.63 in his last eight starts. Seven of those games have been quality starts. For me to say that Hampton is back to form would be an understatement. Signing him for 2009 is now a NO-BRAINER.

McFann, only so much to discuss this last week, since we’re all kind of waiting for the next phase to begin — the busy offseason. But I’d caution some who want the team to be built by Thanksgiving, it probably won’t happen. Might not even begin in earnest until then, or at the Winter Meetings in Vegas first week of December.
Braves might be ready to make moves, but until the market is established, until dominoes start to fall, a lot of teams will be waiting before they dive into trades and a lot of free agents will be waiting to see what they can get.

Bradley, I think it was wrote a negative article on JoJo today. (JoJo has been pretty negative lately)
My point. In his 21 starts this year, he has had 11 bad ones, 9 decent starts (some VERY good ones in there), and one that could go either way.
Not that this is a record you can live with out of a starter, probably better than league average out of your 5th starter.
In the last 11 starts, he has had 3 good outings, with no real support. Not a good record, but not a string of 11 straight losses that can be attributed to the pitcher alone.
Before those 11, the previous 5 were all pretty good starts in a row. That was way back in June.
Hope springs eternal!

DOB — Hope you’re feeling some better. Must be a bummer to get to the last week of the season, on the road, and THEN get sick!
Anyway, a question and a comment. The question.. what’s your take on Terence Moore’s column about the seeming lack of a good relationship between Hank Aaron and Bobby Cox? Is that old news within the organization, or is it Moore (pun intended) about a worsening problem? Why bring it up now, unless it’s Aaron’s way of feeling a bit disrespected by the organization, or Cox specifically?
The comment (and another question).. I, for one, would really like to see Hampton come back next year, as a #3 or #4. He seems to be getting a little stronger each time out. Do you think he’d take one of those incentive-based contracts based on IP or appearances or something like that? I think we have some young pitching talent in the system, but they’re a year or so away from being ready for the majors.
By the way, thanks to you and to Carroll for hanging in there with all of us this year. It’s been frustrating to us fans, but y’alls dedication to the blog has NOT been disappointing, at all!

So, is this what Bud Selig meant when supposedly forced Libert Media to grant Henry Aaron a larger role in the Braves organization?
This is silly. And it just sounds bitter.
I don’t care if he’s right. Why call Terrence Moore?
I remember the Van Poppel issue, and I’m pretty certain that the reason he dropped so much further is because it was pretty much assumed that he was going to college (University of Texas, I think). Anyway, the article makes it sound like Bobby’s interest in Van Poppel was ridiculous because he dropped 13 spots; but in reality, under normal circumstances, even if the Braves drafted Jones #1, Van Poppel likely would’ve been drafted shortely thereafter. But, these weren’t normal circumstances.
But then, Oakland drafts him, and Oakland was the “it” team back in 1990, so it was easier to persuade Van Poppel to sign with such a “first rate” organization.
Hank Aaron is the same guy who said a few year’s ago that the Braves should’ve signed Arod, no matter what the dollar figure.

jojo has been pretty brutal at times, and other times he has been amazing. i think its all about confidence on the mound for jojo. hes only 23, after all. i think he is still figuring some things out. bobby has been pretty critical of him, but not in a bad way, more of like a “i know he can do better” kind of way. id love to see jojo give a quality start tonight. 6 IP 3 runs would be ok for him. he needs to start having solid outings again before we start to expect some great ones like he had earlier.

i second carolina gent’s comments on how much DOB and carrol have meant to us this season. thanx, guys.
i also agree that mike hampton needs to be resigned. while i dont think he is going to “repay his debt” to the team by playing for nothing, i really do see him pitching for less in atlanta, because i sense from his comments that he really does appreciate the support he has gotten from the atlanta braves. i think if we can sign him for less than we paid tom glavine this year, we need to do it. this rotation is shaping up to be very young and inexperienced. maybe a 2 year $10mil deal would do it for mike? anywyas, sign him. even if you forget he has been pitching for us, look at the free agent list and tell me his name doesnt standout. he is one of the better pitchers going to free agency. he and derek lowe would be great.
also, lets have fun thinking about 2010 for a second. if you sign hampton and lowe, and then get hudson back for 2010, your gonna be killing alot worms all season with hudson, lowe, hampton and jurjens. that would be fun.

DOB…
Havn’t been on here in awhile as you can tell by my name but I have a couple questions for this unique situation…
Ok, three key starters are hurt right now…Smoltz, Glavine and Hudson. I just read earlier from Chip Caray is annoying that Glavine mentioned Smoltz coming back in a relief role? Is there any truth to that? I think he will heal and be back and the bullpen I think is the best spot for him either setup or closing..I know Hudson wont be back till about August if all goes well but what is the deal with Glavine? I know he has way to much pride to retire on this note especially with how bright the forecast will look for this team next year with the 50 mill+ we will be spending in addition to the solid core we have all around (outside of the rotation)..So basically Im asking is Tommy going to come back with an incentive-based deal? Is he going to even be ready for ST? What injury is he exactly rehabbing from? I never heard the TJ name mentioned and I havnt been able to find a clear cut answer on his status…
Thanks as always man…

Let’s say Bobby does what he did last year, and starts the “second-string” guys in the series against Houston. (That would be Corky if he’s still “mad” at Sammons.)
That would mean this is BMac’s last game, no? OK…
Now, a few weeks ago, I said I’d be satisfied with 39 doubles, 29 homers, and a .299 AVG from him if the Braves finished the season on a winning streak. Well, it looks like he’s not going to hit 29 homers—in fact, it looks like he’s not gonna hit 24, but that’s beside the point…
So let’s see: His AVG is .296 right now. If tonight is the last game he plays this year, he must go 3-3 to finish the season at .300 (2-3 would be .298). It also would be nice if he got maybe…2-4 more RBI, but I don’t wanna get greedy, I guess…
Since he can’t have 29 homers, could he please get 40 doubles? For two years in a row now, he’s ended his season on an 0 fer—Care to break that streak, BMac? Pretty please???

Someone else is posting under the name of Jim. I’m not the guy who suggested the Braves hire Joyner as a hitting instructor!
It’s amazing how much disrespect or grudging compliments that KJ gets on this blog. He was asked to learn a new position last year. He has been playing that position for two years and has shown marked improvement during the second half of this year. Kelly came to the majors about 1 month before JF and missed the whole next season with elbow surgery. After that season he was asked to learn a new position. On this blog, after two full years in the majors we have pigenoholed KJ as hopelessly streaky and seemed to have assumed that he has reached the full potential of his talent. JF, on the otherhand, has had three full seasons in the major leagues; his production has dropped off markedly; his defense has disimproved; yet there is an underlying sentiment that he is still young and will develop into the player that was envisioned when he arrived 4 years ago. I hope none of the Kelly haters is anyone in the front office posting under an alias.

Anyone see Buster Olney’s piece on ESPN about how the “Steinbrenner Doctrine” of moving away from a homegrown team to a team reliant on big name free agents has costs the Yankees since the last won the Series in 2000? Interesting piece.
Don’t know if I completely agree, though. I mean the Yankees won 100+ game three times after 2000. They won 94+ games seven times after 2000.
I think the Steinbrenner Doctrine is pretty sound when it come to free agent hitters, if a team has that much money to spend. It’s in the area of pitching and defense where the doctrine has failed. The Yankees blew lots of money and roster spots on aging and/or mediocre pitching and DH types.
Also, as we all know, in the postseason fluky things can happen. The Yankees could have easily won the 2001 World Series. In 2002, they played some close games against the Angels. The same in 2003 against the Marlins. They had the Red Sox on the ropes in 2004 and could have easily won that Series with just a break or two.
The Steinbrenner Doctrine—signing old, mediocre pitchers and DH type hitters; neglecting the farm system; etc.—certainly deserves blame for the Yankees lack of postseason success since 2000. But you can’t discount the nature of short postseason series and the role of lady luck. It’s not as if the Yankees have put together awful teams this decade. And lesser teams than any 2001-2008 Yankees squad have won World Series since 2000.

I hope Hampton does pitch Sunday so that a) Jair can shut it down and b) we can see if Hampton’s progress continues.
He may be angling for the mother of all incentive-laden contracts. If I’m a GM, I might approach him with something like this (after he passes the physical, of course): a minor-league deal that pays $1MM if he makes the major league roster; an extra $2MM if he makes at least 10 starts; an extra $3MM if he pitches 150 innings.
Hampton will make $6MM from the Rockies if he sits home. It’s a low-risk, high-reward move for each side.
And if Hamp hits his incentives and pitches well, he could sign another deal for more money in 2010.

BTW, folks, Frenchy’s September OPS is .770.
That’s still mediocre for a corner OF in a run-producing role. But it’s about the same line he had for all of 2007.
Can he keep it up?

DOB, how do you think JJJ will react to Hampton asking if it’s okay for him to pitch on Sunday? It’d be nice to save Jair’s arm a little bit and it’d be nice to see Hampton end the season on a strong note.

Chuck James (you need a different screen name): It’s simply too early to know if Glavine or Smoltz will make it back. Neither is throwing yet, though Smoltz will start in a week or so (he said early October). If Smoltz makes it back, he has indicated to some folks that it would be as a reliever, more than likely. For the record, he says it could be either role, but I get the impression he’s thinking reliever.
Glavine is rehabbing from surgery to repair a flexor tendon tear, not TJ surgery. Much less serious, but at his age it’s no guarantee he’ll pitch again. He also had his shoulder ‘scoped at the same time, to clean up the labrum a bit. Again, not a major surgery, but that’s two surgeries he’s coming back from, at age 42 (43 in March).
If Braves re-sign him, he knows it’ll be a incentive-laden contract at reduced salary from his current $8 mill deal. He’s good with that, expects that. But he did told me he wouldn’t want to have to “make the team” on a minor league contract in the spring. Wants a major league deal, in other words.

From Orlando news —-
“Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports complex will be renamed the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, signaling the Walt Disney Co.’s desire to capitalize on both brands at its giant Central Florida resort.”
I guess we will now have the ESPN Braves Spring Training Facility.

I like the idea of Hampton returning to the Braves at a reasonable price. He could be a cheap ($8 to $10 million) veteran option. Then if we can sign an ace and another veteran with some guile, we could improve quite a bit. Of course, we still need a veteran outfielder with some punch in his bat to take the place of Frenchie.

Why not resign Hampton. He won’t cost much, and he is proving to be consistant, and healthy, and even if he gets injured the team will not lose a lot of money, unlike previous years when he was making 14 million per season. Resigning him won’t blocked the Braves to get one or two other starters, like AJ Burnett, and Derek Lowe. Imagine that starting rotation: Aj Burnett, Derek Lowe, Jair Jurrjens, Mike Hampton, and Jorge Campillo, and hopefully with a healthy bulpen, pitching won’t be an issue.
Aj Burnett signs a deal worth 65million for 4 years, Derek Lowe a deal worth 24 million for two years, Hampton a deal worth 2 million(with incentives), Glavine and Smoltz a deal similar to Hampton if they show they can still pitch in spring training, Ohman a deal worth 9 million for three years, Norton a deal worth 1.5 million for a 1 year. For next year that would cover 35.5million, and they can spend 50 million(i think), so the Braves have 14.5 million to sign a left fielder, maybe Pat Burrel for a deal worth 40 million for 3 years. In my opinion I think that would solve all the problems, and give them a really good team, maybe the best team in the national league, IF THEY CAN STAY HEALTHY. Which I can tell you has a bigger chance of happening with this guys. I know Burnett has his history of injuries, but he has been healthy for over 65% of the season in his last 4 seasons, and he has ace stuff, which is exactly what the Braves need now without Hudson.

You know this ‘08 team is bad when other teams lose to us and respond with a “It was just bad luck for us”, or,”That ump missed the call or it would have changed the whole game around”,etc. Braves need to put that fear back in the opp. but it ain’t gonna start tonight with batting practice Reyes! Who wants to bet how long he lasts tonight- I’m thinking a 3 inning night should do it!

If Smoltz, and Glavine do prove they can pitch, the rotation will be Burnett, Lowe, Jurrjens, Hampton, Glavine, and the bulpen will be the best i’ve seen if they stay healthy, and produce the way they’re capable of doing. Campillo, Soriano, Gonzo, Ohman, Acosta, Bennet, Moylan, and Smoltz. And they will have depth with Boyer, Carlyle, Julio, and Ridgeway in the minor leagues.

Tomas- that would be awesome if that was going to happen, but with teams like the Yank$,Mut$,Dodger$,Red $ox there’s no doubt in my mind that 1 or 4 of those teams will outbid us for Burnett and maybe even Burrell. I can see Lowe with us though.

burrell is not the guy we need, i dont think. he is complementary player. good on an awesome offensive team like the phillies, but on a team like to braves, we would suffer from his strikeouts, slow baserunning and bad defense.
id rather have a solid 20 homer guy who is more than just a homer, a walk, or a K. hed be cheaper too. (casey blake)

Jus chippin in my two cents…I like Lowe for a 2 yr 22-25 mill deal, no longer and I think Wren is thinking on that same page that he’s not gonna want to go anywhere past 3 yrs if he goes as far as to offer 3. And we all know idiot GM’s out there would probably give Lowe 4. (Pat Gillick) That Adam Eaton signing was hilarious and I was 21 and knew better, I mean c’mon…
Thanks for the updates/info on our legends Dave, I hope Smoltz has a desire to relish that reliever role again..That’d be some kind of bullpen! But what the heck is the deal with Soriano? His “unknown” injury is kinda scary and he is a big part to ATL’s strong potential of success next year. Was there any “official” injury for Soriano? Any status on him or he just needs the winter to gain back “strength”?

DAP,
I don’t like Burrel either but he can hit it them out of the ballpark, and comes through on clutch situations. He has 21 homers against the Braves that ranks third among active players behind Soriano, and Howard. He is not a good defensive player, but if he hits 30 homers and drives in a 100 that’s good enough. The Braves need an outfielder that hits homers, and I don’t see Frenchy as homerun hitter, not even when he is on his game. He only hit 19 homers in 2007, and he was on top of his game. Blanco or Anderson can replace him late in games as baserunners, or defensive replacements. He is also cheaper than Dunn, and doesn’t strike out as much as Dunn. It will also be an strategic move, and take Burrel out of that powerfull phillies lineup.

I was trying to figure out where DOB came up with the statement that Chuck James is solid. I thought I missed some great rehab assignment or something. Then I realized it was someones moniker here. Oh well.
I do hope Chuck gets it together and regains his form

Tomas those are all good points about burrell, and i agree we need a guy who can hit like that….i dont really like having a player who needs a defesive replacment and a pinch runner all the time. also, the money burrell will make and the length of contract he will get might block some of our young outfielders we have coming up.
He has 21 homers against the Braves that ranks third among active players behind Soriano, and Howard.
yeah, so if he cant hit against braves pitcing he will only hit like 10 homers.
thats a joke.
anyways, i disagree with signing burrell. i just dont think he will be right for us. we will see though. it wont be the worst thing ever if we get him.
here is my thought though… if we get a solid hitter who can hit 20 homers, and mccan hits 20, and chipper hits 20, and jeff rebounds and hits 20, and escobar plays all year and hits 15(i think he can) and kotchman hits his 15, and kelly hits 15, then thats not bad. weve got blanco play left, but we dont have to over correct and go get the exact opposite of blanco. we could go somewhere in the middle, like casey blake (hes way closer to burrell and blanco anyways).
what went wrong this year is that we had alot of injuries, and several position players had down years. if we get a couple of guys to have good years at once (which could definelty happen, since a bunch of our guys are starting to get to their peaks) and guys stay reasonalbly healthy, our team could turn around real quick.

The Yankees have undoubtably the biggest payroll, and with that in mind I think CC, Sheets, and maybe even Texeira will be in pinstripes next year. That’s why I think the Braves might have a shot with Burnett, if they’re willing to take that chance. The Mets, don’t need another SP, and the dodgers likewise. Toronto do not want to overspend on him, that leaves the Braves with an extra edge. The Phillie I think won’t resign Burrel, maybe the mets might be interested in him.
