One more Skip story, then baseball….

A great man and broadcasting icon is dead, but the stories live on.

Here’s one for the ages from his son Chip, who inherited dad’s sense of humor in the face of, well, in the face of just about anything.

At this morning’s memorial service at Turner Field, Chip Caray told this story to the masses, a story that we, understandably, didn’t hear at the Skip Caray memorial mass yesterday at Church of Christ in Buckhead.

“I’m 16 years old,” Chip said. “It’s 1981. We have a sky blue four-door Volvo stick shift. Dad decides on a Sunday ‘Son, you’re going to learn how to drive a manual transmission.’ Dad knew how to go home but wasn’t afraid to stop with a double, if you know what I mean.

“Loaded up with a double, we drive to a church parking lot. I’m in the driver’s seat. And anybody who’s ever driven with a rookie manual transmission driver knows what happens in first gear. The car is shaking back and forth. My dad braces himself with his hands on the dashboard, but his libation is soon between his legs.

“The infamous words, which live on forever in family lore, as the car is jerking back and worth and we’re laughing, is: ‘Son why are you spilling my drink on my penis?’”

And can’t we all hear Skip saying that, in that distinct, often imitated but never duplicated voice?

Rest in peace, Skip. And shine on, you big, gregarious, crazy diamond.

Playing like a cornerstone: The team might be out of the postseason race, but don’t tell Brian McCann. He keeps saying how the Braves aren’t mathematically eliminated and that they’ve still got to play every game to win, for themselves, for the fans, for the team, etc.

And he’s not just talking, he’s playing like it, shaking off the effects of a concussion and playing as aggressively as ever since returning last week after a one-week absence with that Shane Victorino-induced throbbing noggin’.

In his past 20 games, B-Mac has hit .366 (26-for-71) with five doubles, six homers, 21 RBI, 14 walks, seven strikeouts, a .477 OBP and a .690 slugging percentage. Oh, and lest we forget, three stolen bases in three attempts.

The Braves are 11-9 in those 20 games, and McCann has reached base at least once via a hit or walk in 18 consecutive games.

Cubs hot, Marquis is not: The Braves took three out of four on the road against NL West leader Arizona in the series that ended Sunday, but now they get the far more formidable NL Central-leading Cubs.

The Cubs come in on an 11-3 roll, having hit .305 and averaged more than six runs in that 14-game stretch, while posting a 3.76 ERA. Braves rook Charlie Morton faces another tough test tonight when he goes up against Rich Harden, who was traded from Oakland to the Cubs on July 8.

Harden is 5-2 with a stingy 2.05 ERA in his past 15 starts, with a whopping 119 strikeouts and only 29 walks in 92-1/3 innings. Yikes.

Young Charlie has made huge strides in his last two starts, posting a 1.29 ER and .180 opponents’ average in those games, including two runs allowed in seven innings vs. Milwaukee and seven scoreless innings of five-hit ball at Arizona.

The middle game pitching matchup favors the Braves in a big way: Jorge Campillo, who’s 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA in his past six starts, against Jason Marquis, a former Brave whose work you’re probably familiar with.

Marquis (7-7) hasn’t played a big part in the Cubs’ success this season, particularly of late. He’s 1-4 with a 5.31 ERA in his past seven starts, and he’s give up 13 earned runs and five homers in 18-1/3 innings over his past three

Chipper has to be drooling: He’s 4-for-6 with three homers against Marquis.

By the way, Marquis’ former roommate with the Braves, Mark DeRosa, has had quite a bit to do with the Cubs’ fortunes this season. The versatile veteran is having a solid year after bouncing back from the heart-condtion scare in spring training.

DeRo has hit .276 with 35 extra-base hits (13 homers), 66 RBIs and a .369 OBP this season, and in his past five games he’s 7-for-18 with three doubles, two homers and 11 RBI (including a grand slam.

The Braves were swept in a three-game series at Chicago June 10-12, where Atlanta hit just .220, got outscored 20-9, saw Jair Jurrjens miss a start after slipping and turning his ankle on a staircase while leaving the clubhouse the night before he was to pitch, and, of course, saw Tom Glavine leave the series opener with a sore elbow.

Glavine’s been on the DL ever since then, with what was diagnosed as a partially torn flexor tendon. He’s scheduled to come off the DL to pitch against these same Cubs Thursday, his first game since the injury. That one will be interesting to watch, since Glavine hasn’t decided yet about pitching another season.

He’ll wait to see how he feels, how he pitches, and then whether or not the Braves have any interest in re-signing him if he does want to pitch again.

Vote for Skip: Speaking of Skip Caray, I just got an e-mail about the upcoming Ford C. Frick Award balloting, which begins Sept. 1.

You folks, the fans, will determine three of the 10 names that go on the final ballot for the award, which is presented for excellence in broadcasting. The winner will be announced at the winter meetings Dec. 9 in Las Vegas, and the winner will be honored at next summer’s Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown.

Caray is in the Braves Hall of Fame. It’s time he’s honored in Cooperstown, don’t you think?

Fan voting begins Sept. 1 online at baseballhall.org and the ballot with the top 10 finalists will be announced on Oct. 6. If you want to see Skip on the ballot, I’d suggest you flood that site with votes.

The winner will be selected by a voting panel of 20 that includes the 15 living Frick Award winners (among them: Ernie Harwell, Harry Kalas, Vin Scully, Milo Hamilton, Bob Uecker and Marty Brennaman), along with five historians and veteran media members, including Bob Costas.

Voters are asked to base selections on the following criteria: longevity; continuity with a club; honors, including national assignments such as the World Series and All-Star Games; and popularity with fans.

I’d say Skip fits that bill.

OK, a tune: Got a CD in the mail by a singer-songwriter guy, Keith Morris, who grew up in Georgia as a big Braves fan, and is now a fixture in the thriving music scene in Charlottesville, Va. I really like the CD, Songs from Candyapolis, and was a bit surprised to hear some familiar names, including a “Mr. Schuerholz,” in the second song, Cross-Eyed John.

The John referred to in the title isn’t Schuerholz, but rather a certain former Braves left-handed reliever, a rather intense fella who ran into a bit of controversy. A Rocker, so to speak. I think you folks would get a kick out of it. Google it, you can find it. It’s a really good CD, beyond the novelty of that tune.

Here’s part of a review of it I found online at CDBaby, which reviews indie music: “The musical moods here run the gamut: from Pentecostal, snake-handling Gospel to dreamlike odes to Appalachian hoe-downs; from quietly whispered prayers to unhinged rave-ups to transporting lullabies. Apropos of the album’s wide-open perspective and emotional honesty, “Candyapolis” also features a rocking and redefining cover of Daniel Johnston’s “Casper The Friendly Ghost.” It’s a siginificant album; one that draws the listener into a world all its own….”

One other baseball-related music note: After I included lyrics to that Chuck Brodsky song, Dock Ellis’ No-No a while back, I was sent a CD of his that includes all baseball tunes, called, appropriately enough, Baseball Ballads. Most of you would absolutely love this compilation, which has the Dock Ellis song and that other tune I mentioned, about Richie Allen, Letter in the Sand. It’s singer-songwriter, folk-rock fare, with Brodsky and his guitar, plus various accompaniment on piano, bass and dobro. Great stuff. Check it out at chuckbrodsky.com Records….

On a non-baseball music note, the new Beck CD is really strong, when I can find time to play it between spinnings of the terrific new one by The Hold Steady, Stay Positive. The recently released Sigur Ros CD is also outstanding.

JF’s 2008 K/BB: 2.83

2007 K/BB: 3.07

I almost guarantee that by the end of the year, 2.83 goes up, not down.

For example, if Francoeur K’s in his next 5 AB before drawing a walk, his K/BB will be 3.0 (90/30), almost the same as it was last year. With Harden pitching tonight, I like those odds.

Anyone feel different?

In the 6th inning on Sunday, right before Jeff bounced into an inning ending DP, why was Infante swinging at the first pitch, when Webb had walked 2 of the 3 previous batters?

Oh, and by watching the game Sunday, I finally figured out what Francoeur’s problem is: He isn’t hitting worth a damn!

That ol’ Skip was a good one - I have had several adult beverages in the last week dedicated to his memory….

Mac is a hitting machine, and he is only going to get better…McFann will kill me but after the Kotchman experiment is over, Mac to first!

Charlie is going to get better too - I can remember Glavine getting a beat-down in Cincy in the late 80’s and thinking “what is this guy doing”, so I just have to wait Charlie out too.

He will be A-ok.

Thanks for the new blog, Chief!

And thanks a bunch for those stats on BMac. Nice! I love the way he’s been playing—especially lately. Hey, I’m with him: It ain’t over yet!

He’s just gotta get on base in 9 more consecutive games to break his career high 26-game on-base streak! (That was set in 2006, when else?)

Twice as many walks as K’s in his past 21…gotta love that! More RBI than games played…and of course, you can’t forget the stolen bases!

I love it when guys “practice what they preach”, so to speak. It’s nice when they don’t just Talk the Talk, but Walk the Walk as well.

So let’s see…fifth?

Bobby: With Harden pitching tonight, I like those odds. Anyone feel different?

Yes. I feel different. Francoeeur has had a terrible season and it has frustrated me considerably. But I’m not excited about JF striking out in an up coming game. I don’t revel in his failure. It doesn’t please me to seem if struggle. And it will not please me if he eventually struggles his way out of the game.

So yes, I feel differently. I feel like I want him to turn it around and do better. I’ll continue to hope for that.

I heard on the old blog about kotchman not performing and that he needs to be more productive. Well hes no Tex, but hes struck out…what, like 3 times in 12 games. Putting the ball in play that much only means good things. Hes bound to get hot soon. We havent seen any power out of him yet in Atlanta but im sure it will come.

Now about the offseason, what would you do if you were Frank Wren? Would you settle on taking a chance on an often injured frontline starter or would you pay top dollar for CC Sabathia and his ability to go late into games. What kind of power bat will be aquired? I dont see anything too desirable right now. Thoughts?

Finally once we get a frontline starter our rotation could be: 1. Frontline Starter (CC or Sheets or Lackey) 2. Smoltz (if Smoltz doesnt return then we need to aquire another starter) 3. Jurrjens 4. Campillo 5. Morton or Reyes or Hampton or Glavine

The more i think about it if next years braves put themselves in contention, How big of a playoff boost would it be to get Hudson back? That would definatly push this team over the top.

You’re worried about Infante swinging at a pitch after the guy had just walked two guys ahead of him? I’m not worried about Infante one bit - guy can do what he wants right now cause he’s knocking the cover the off the ball. General rules of baseball go out the window when you are in the zone and the fastballs look like beach balls.

Different story with Frenchy. He’d be better of not taking the bat off his shoulders. And if were management I would send him to AA because it is obvious that Bobby is going to run him out there if he is available. I don’t understand it but Bobby has earned that right. Having said that, I don’t agree with it.

Still loving the Beck CD. Great stuff as always. One of my fav’s and glad I saw him in Charlotte in 93 or 94 or maybe 95. Fuzzy time period for some reason.

DOB, Any odds we pull of something with Tampa for a young starting prospect for Kotsay type of deal??? Seems like the timing might be right. I’m thinking one trade before the season is over…trade for a nice starter like a Harang or Halladay…and then sing a nice FA starter (not CC or Sheets - some actually worth what we will pay them).

Do you really think Milo Hamilton (former Braves voice, by the way) is going to vote for Skip, given the enmity between them over the last several years? I think it all stems from a comment Milo made once about Harry Sr. and Skip, understandably, took umbrage.

Great job as always, DOB. The Skip/Chip story is hilarious. I’ve been around a long time, and when I was a kid I listened to games on the radio all the time. Skip Caray was a terrific baseball broadcaster, and he rates with the best ever. Not just his distinctive voice and his humor. He had insight and he treated the game as just that — a game, not life-and-death. Vin Scully was (and still is, amazingly) the absolute best. Mel Allen (long-time voice of the Yankees) was second, in my opinion. Then there’s Ernie Harwell, Bob Prince, Harry Caray, Russ Hodges, Milo Hamilton, perhaps a small handful more. Then there’s Skip. I remember when the Ford Frick voting was announced a year ago, and I wrote here that we all should vote for Skip and Pete and Ernie (as good a trio as ever worked together) because they all deserve it. They all still do, of course, but now we have to do it for Skip and his family. It’s a shame he’s no longer with us, but now is his time for sure.

Yeah, good baseball sense says that everybody should take one if the pitcher is on the ropes, and has walked 2 of the 3 previous batters. I don’t give a damn if the guy is hitting a ton. His sacrifice fly wasn’t what we needed trailing 6-0.

Now, I am not saying Infante is a bad hitter, but in my book, he never gets a green light on that first pitch.

And Francoeur gets pinch hit for in that situation too.

I still get chills when I hear this:

Skip

Most dramatic moment I remember as a brave fan. A hit you could go to the Series, and an out your season is done. Does it get any more dramatic than that in a game 7? That’s my favorite Skip call.

Thanks Skip for the childhood memories.

Oh yeah, I still get the bumps when I hear the World Series call too. Felt on top of the world after that moment, a feeling I wouldn’t feel again until I started dating.

Mr. O’Brien,

I have tried to ask you this on earlier blogs, but I don’t think you saw them. I have a quick question for you about Charlie Morton. Several of your quotes of Morton have him saying things like “this was a good outing, especially for somebody like me who doesn’t have much confidence.”

You also refer to him as “amiable” and “smiling sheepishly.”

In stories, he frequently refers to the fact that he does not have much confidence, which I view as an odd thing to say about oneself.

From how you protray him, both in your stories and on this blog, he seems like a genuinely nice guy who is very mild-mannered, but he seems like a real shinking violet (so to speak).

While a great guy to sit next to on a plane, this doesn’t seem like the make-up of a big-time pitcher.

My question is, am I correct in my perception? What is your take on the guy?

Thanks!!

That is great news for music lovers in Atlanta and all over the Braves nation.

Mccann has showed all of us what he’s made of. A true CORNERSTONE for sure. He has rised in everyway this year. I’m so happy braves locked him up and did not with FRENCHY. actually FRENCHY was dumb/co**Y to not accept similar deal! His loss.

mlbtraderumors is explaining A Pujols Elbow is barking again. Wonder how that will effect Chippers 08 BA Title. Looks like Pujols will play—but will he start falling on his BA? could. Chipper will find a way to win it this year.

Im worn out on Frenchy. he’s taking too much attention from everyone(thx Cox). I just hope Anderson comes in and take over RF. Use Frenchy on pinch hit/run situations. He’s a GOTAY with an arm to me at this point.

A few days ago, I was thinking about the roster, and couldn’t for the life of me figure out why we still have Ruben Gotay on the roster???

We have our designated 2nd base back in Prado. (Gotay truly only plays one position)

We have Infante and Prado for our infield backups. Norton can play first and third in a pinch.

Wouldn’t we be better served with either Anderson or Lillibridge? The potential upside on these two guy is much greater than Ruben Gotay’s. If we want them playing more, then bring them up and play them….. it’s not like we are really going to win anything this year anyway.

Just finished watching the Skip tribute on the web - just wonderful.

My Skip story - he added a phrase to our household lexicon. He said it so many times over the years - when my wife or I say something that the other agrees with - just like Skip, the reply is “Right you are, Joe Simpson.”

Just wish like someone above that Ted Turner - and Don and Ernie could have been part of the tribute to a great broadcaster.

May we all respond to DOB’s call to arms above and vote when the balloting for the Ford Frick Award begins next month and put Skip where he should have been 10 years ago - in the Hall.

I had heard that the distain that Skip held toward Milo Hamilton stems from back in 1974 when Milo and Ernie Sr. did the Braves radio broadcast. Milo insisted on being on the mic everytime that Hank Aaron came to bat when he was chasing 715. So that his voice would be the one that made the historic call. Even though Skip was not doing Braves games yet he held that against Milo. Skip thought so much of Ernie Johnson Sr. that Skip let Ernie do a couple of his innings on radio during the 1991 World Series. He knew how long that Ernie suffered with the Braves through all of those losing seasons. He wanted Ernie the enjoy the World Series success. Just another story that shows what a loyal friend Skip was.

No, the real issue with Milo Hamilton was that he put out a book about 3 years or so ago (and about a year after Harry , Sr. died) that laid into Harry. It called him a mean ornery obnoxious person that had a charade of a nice guy thing going. When it is about your father, isn’t flattering, and he isn’t around to defend himself, that is low.

I’m not saying I root against Frenchy. Never have rooted against a Brave player.

Just saying that the K/BB ratio put up by Frenchy this year can’t be though so highly of, and has no indication of improvement at the plate in regards to his approach whatsoever.

Shaun is making it seem like Frenchy is making strides this year, where I see him as taking 2 giant strides back.

his improved approach has taken away some of his power is what Shaun said. I don’t see any improved approach. Read my post from last blog if you will to see the stats. But i’m not even talking stats. I really don’t SEE any improvement in his approach, and i don’t need contacts.

5 more K’s by Frenchy before getting a walk, and his K/BB ratio is pretty damn similar to last year. 7 more K’s without a walk and it’s the same. 8 more and it’s worse.

The hard reality is that’s entirely possible.

Flange1, I hear same thing about Red Sox discussing Kotsay. He’s a Red Sox-type guy, great in the clubhouse, professional at-bats, fundamentally strong OF, all that.

But Braves aren’t just gonna give him away, I don’t think. They haven’t ruled out bringing him back, and I know Kotsay would like to play here again, if he doesn’t get a chance to play closer to home.

Joe, why do the Braves need a washed up, 39-year-old, overpriced outfielder who can’t even play his position anymore? Even Jim Leyland, his manager in Detroit, admits as much. Unless Detroit covers a good chunk of his salary this year and next ($14 Million!!), no one’s gonna touch him, certainly not the Braves.

GeorgetownKid: regarding Morton. Yes, he’s very nice, extremely mild mannered. Wouldn’t call him a shrinking violet, though. He’s just a different guy than you normally run across in his profession. But he’s quite smart, and I think he’s made a lot of progress in the confidence area since last year. He’s still a work in progress mentally, still developing, but there’s plenty of reasons to think he’s going to be a strong starting pitcher for a long time.

But yes, you’re right in the perception of him being very mild mannered and just a friendly, kinda goofy guy.

Pujols (.347) is third in the batting race today, behind Chipper (.370) and Holliday (.348).

isn’t that kinda DUMB on the Cubs part. Why? because Marquis isn’t too hot so why not pitch him in the 2nd game considering their bullpen might be overused? Evening gang…

A soggy night in Georgia, folks, where we don’t have kids lip sync the national anthem for aesthetics. Fittingly, we play two against the baby bears tomorrow in a twin bill that would bring a smile to Ernie Banks’ face.

To me, I think we got a little break with the rain. I think the job can potentially be much easier for C-Mo against the incorrigible one, Jason Marquis than the assignment he would have drawn tonight, against Rich Harden. Tomorrow night’s nightcap does have the potential to be quite the pitching duel with recent birthday boy Jorge Campillo (happy late birthday Campy) on the mound for the lads of Stone Mountain.

There have been many that viewed Francoeur as the future face of the franchise (say that three times fast with crackers in your mouth), however the baby Brave that is playing like the cornerstone of the franchise once Chipper and Smoltz exit stage right is number 16 in your programs folks. He really understands the game, how to play the game, but more importantly he understands how to approach the game not only behind the dish, but also at the plate with the lumber. He shows a savviness that belies his young age. It’s gonna be a lot of fun watching B-Mac and Joe Mauer over the next several years.

We need to cheer on the Offensive Assassin down the stretch as he swings for his first batting title. I will also be ready on September 1st as voting for the Ford Frick Award begins. Nice touch by the franchise and all involved with today’s activities and the naming of the television broadcast booth after Skip, who would have enjoyed his 69th birthday today.

Happy birthday, Skip.

N Nine:

I do think we will use a ton of cash on pitching…but do you really think FW is gonna stand pat with the OF as it is currently comprised? He said it himself, we need to improve the outfield, and either Dunn or Pat Burrell is the best way to do it. We’ll probably trade for an ace (there were rumors earlier this year that Roy Halladay would like to be traded), sign a guy like Lowe/Garland, and sign an OF.

Can you find any other FA outfielder better than Dunn or Burrell (that doesn’t have an option for ‘09)? Since I don’t expect us to sign CC, it seems likely that we’ll have to fill the pitching need through a trade (you mentioned Peavy, which could be a possibility). We can’t gut the system to get a pitcher and an OF, though.

Like I said, I don’t expect him to get everything he’s asking for, and if they do, we can always try to sign Raul Ibanez for a more reasonable sum. Somebody like the Yankees or Mets is gonna seriously overpay CC next year. Did you read Hank Steinbrenner’s recent comments? That sure sounds to me like they’re going to give CC a blank check.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have CC, but in all reality we’re not going to get him, so we should use our money to improve other areas of our club.

Francoeur is a story of many players who people wonder what ever happened to him.

I’ve seen baseball history series where they showed guys who were fantastic and for some unknown reason “fizzled out”

Andruw Jones has severals records that he set that when it is all done, he could be in the hall. My personal opinion is that he should have opened a large business and left baseball records behind, then, he would be in the hall. He was called up and played so early that when he turned 30 he had had a good career.

On another note, I would like to thank our blog leader DOB for his coverage of the death of Skip Caray. Steve I suspect we have 2 trading chips (plus a lot of prospects and major leaguers who will NOT command much in the way of trades.) Our two trading pieces are KJ and Escobar. One or both will be traded, in my humble opinion.

I hope we resist the urge to send off many of our pitching and good hitting prospects.

How about KJ for Spilborghs, and then package Escobar with a couple of prospects (a bit contrary to my earlier statement) for an ace. (Peavy, Oswalt, Halladay, etc).

Then try to sign one of the 2nd tier starters on the FA market.

Like most people, I have to work tomorrow and since I don’t work downtown, I can’t make it to the Turner Field box office. Is this a new policy? By Steve from OH

Wayne, while I suspect that KJ may be a trading chip (I hope not, but let’s not go there, shall we?), I definitely don’t think Yunel will be. I can almost guarantee you that they both won’t be traded.

To me, our best chip is JoJo Reyes. We’ll probably also shop Brandon Jones, Lillibridge, and Chuck James. What we can get for them, I don’t know, but I think those are decent chips that don’t significantly subtract from our team in the short term. In the minors, I’d suspect Tyler Flowers would probably be quick to go, just because we’ve got McCann for a while and Freddie Freeman as a 1B prospect (meaning we probably wouldn’t move Flowers to first).

Like I said earlier, I think we’ll probably trade for an ace, and sign a Garland/Lowe guy and also sign a corner OF. Don’t get your hopes up for CC, though. The Yankees are already sewing “Sabathia” on their largest uni.

Flew into Atlanta from Hartford today. My flight was scheduled for 7:35 AM, but I flew standby so I didn’t get on until 5:15. Going to see the double header tomorrow and the game on Friday, also visiting family in between. Can’t wait to see Jurrjens on Friday and Morton and Campillo tomorrow.

Anyway, the Braves have some holes—some gaping holes I might add. But there really aren’t many. The problem is that we aren’t looking for mid-rotation starters or solid but not too expensive outfielders. We need an ace, a mid rotation starter or better, and a cleanup hitting outfielder. It’s really that simple. I suppose resigning Ohman is a priority too. But honestly, if we just gave a nice deal to Burell or Bradley, Garland or Lowe, and traded for the best available pitcher on the market, then we’re in business. I expect 2 aces to go on the market this offseason, at least. Last offseason we saw Santana, Haren, and Bedard go onto the market. Maybe Peavy, Oswalt, and Halladay go this year? The options are endless by any means, but we really only have 3 holes. But don’t get me wrong, they are some deep holes.

I asked a Braves official right after the game was called, said exactly what you did — that it’s not right to expect working people who came to this game to be able to make it out before 1 p.m. tomorrow to exchange tix, etc, not to mention that anyone who brought their kids wouldn’t be able to use those tix to a day game now that school’s started.

I can’t understand why they wouldn’t allow you to exchange them for any future game and do something either online, over the phone, or just later, like tomorrow night after work.

Just a bad policy, if you ask me. That just seems anything but fan-friendly.

I have tickets that I have to use before September 1st.

Since I do not have time to deal with this I will probably forego the seats.

The logic is this. The only people that can afford to or to come to the games are employed people. Why put all these restrictions, since the stadiem is not sold out anyway. It will not be sold out as long as Francoeur is playing and the offense sucks. I would take other seats.

I don’t covet money, but my time is coveted. Since I like to live good and eat well I have to just let the tickets go. Therefore, more empty seats are in the stadium.

Do the Math (a phrase I hate), empty seats, souvenirs, concession money, etc.

The Braves are going to have the money to compete for Sabathia’s services. Will they, probably not but I think he’s the best pitcher available and he’s young and hasn’t been injury prone up to this point. I think whoever said it earlier hit it on the nose. If Smoltz is able to return to the rotation then the Braves will need only 1 starting pitcher so why not empty the bank to sign a lefthanded ace in his prime who goes deep into games? The Braves should offer 6-7 years at 18 mill a year and see if that gets it done. A lot, yes but they’ll have money to spend. Then offer Raul Ibanez a three year deal at 8 million a year. Then the Braves should get creative in finding another outfield bat (yes they need two) who is cheap and productive. I think the perfect fit would be Matt Kemp although I don’t think the Dodgers would be shopping him, but someone similar to his production and years in the league is a necessity. The Braves have several trading chips. Lillibridge, K Johnson, Francoeur, Reyes, and maybe even Schaefer with Gorkys Hernandez possibly passing him up this season. Heck, I would offer 4 out of the five I mentioned to see if that would get Kemp. The Dodgers are going to have Kent retiring and Furcal possibly leaving through free agency so they’ll need middle infield help and the Braves definitley have depth there. The Braves also need to resign Ohman. A deal similar to what Soriano was given last off season should get it done. Give him a two year 6 mill deal with the Braves paying him 2 mill in 09. How bout this lineup

Blanco Escobar Chipper Mccann Kemp Ibanez Kotchman Prado

Bench: Infante, Norton, Anderson, Salmons, and one of their minor league infielders or invite Marcus Giles to spring training

Rotation: Sabathia, Jurrjens, Smoltz, Campillo, Morton

Steve Certainly not trying to be argumentative, but what other teams would salivate enough over JoJo Reyes, Brandon Jones, Chuck James and Brent Lillibridge; all players who can’t stay on the 25 man roster of a 4th place team.

These guys have some value, but none are the centerpiece of a trade for a real ace.

To get a real ace, we are going to have to part with someone big. The only guy we have that qualifies (Chipper and McCann are staying put) is Yunel Escobar.

As for Kelly, I am not a KJ basher. BUT, he is one of our only desireable pieces. Would you rather have KJ and Brandon Jones at second and left, or Prado/Infante and Spilborghs in left?

That is not a slam against KJ, but an honest question??? Which way would you go? I love KJ’s bat, but he is not hitting enough (this year) to justify his marginal defense at a critical spot up the middle.

Personally, I use KJ to get that LF’er, Escobar and 2-3 others to get a Halladay/Oswalt/Peavy type. Then I use a combo of Infante/Lilly/Prado/Renteria (offer him a contract) for the middle infield positions.

Gotta stick with Francoeur one more year (or at least part of one) and hope to catch some luck on Schafer/Blanco/Anderson in centerfield. Use the piece we got for KJ (I really like Spilborghs) for leftfield.

Go get Derek Lowe or Brad Penny to fill out the rotation.

You might have to trade Morton or Reyes along with Escobar to get the ace. Likely you will also have to include a couple more players (top pitching prospect and or top positional prospect)

I would offer a package of Escobar, BJones, Reyes, Locke and Hernandez for Peavy/Halladay/Oswalt. AND, then hope I don’t have to insert Hanson in the place of Reyes, but realizing I might have to.

Long road trips do this to me. They turn me into the “at-home” GM.

Wayne, I agree that most (all) teams wouldn’t be salivating over those guys. I’m a bit conservative when it comes to the trade speculation, I guess. I just don’t think we’re going to trade Yuney and KJ. Based on what FW has said, and the fact that they’re young, cheap, and good, I just don’t see them going anywhere. I agree that we will have to give up someone big to get an ace, though.

I’d try JoJo, Brandon Jones, Flowers and Gorkys for Peavy/Halladay, and add another pitcher if need be (though not Hanson). That’s a bit conservative, though. Let’s just say I’m glad I don’t have to make these decisions.

Like I said, the more we stay away from giving up Hanson, Locke, Cordier and Rohrbough, the better.

Personally, our rotation could only be helped by the addition of a midget!

Looking over some of the recent stats of Hanson and Medlen, I can’t see us going through September without an informal tryout by some of these guys. Hanson has 30 K’s in the past 18 1/3 innings.

September callups I would love to see: Hanson, Medlen, Schafer and maybe Hicks from Mississippi; and Lillibridge, Jones and Perry from Richmond.

That would mean clearing about 4 spots (Depending on how we use the 60 day DL) on the 40 man roster, but I think that could also be done easy enough.

Are we really going to keep Gotay and Norton after this year?

Steve It’s OK to be conservative when trading away pitching prospects in my book! I would almost rather keep what we have, and wait a while than send too many of them packing.

The question that FW is asking himself is will a combo of Hanson, Rohrbough, Locke, etc ever be worth one Peavy? Like you said, glad I am not the GM. It is EASY doing it from my keyboard, but…..

If they traded Mexican Maddux, I’d be furious.

“Mexican Maddux”? Pffft. When Campillo wins the Cy Young award, get back to me. A 30 year old pitcher having a good season with a pretty decent shot at being a big disappointment next season ain’t my idea of someone that is a must keep. Heck, Campillo seems like a “sell high” candidate.

I wouldn’t just dump him or anything, but I wouldn’t say he’s some untouchable #1. That’s crazy. It’s short-sighted and knee-jerk and reeks of people here, still, judging only by most recent performance. It’s the 2006-2007 offseason “Chuck James is untouchable” mantra.

But Johnson? Ship him out.

I don’t understand why some bloggers rate KJ so highly. His hitting has dropped off badly since the first few months of 2007 and his glove is definitely middling. We have many options coming out of our own system that potentially will be much better. J.C. Holt at Miss. and Jones at Myrtle Beach, to name two. Jones’ average isn’t great so far but he has hit 16 homers so far this year. Prado has shown he can hit but defensively not much better than KJ from what the bloggers say. Infante has shown that he definitely can play the position more than adequately, so let KJ go. Just because he’s cheap doesn’t give him a pass if you’re really trying to build a contending team for next year.

By BA

Who said anything about a #1 or a Cy Young? Do you watch games, “Get Real”? Do you understand the value of quality starting pitching? Maybe your next chicken-s screen name should be “get a grip”, or maybe the tried and true “get a life”. Johnson is an error-ridden strikeout machine. Trade him while he still has ANY value for pitching. We’ve got superior defensive infielders that won’t be “rally-killer junior” behind Francoeur. You mouthbreathers place too much value on the occasional Johnson homerun amidst all the K’s.

I don’t understand why some bloggers rate KJ so highly.

Good plate-discipline, good second base power, above average second base offense, good speed, entering his prime years, hits homeruns on a low-homerun team, etc. High ceiling. Yeah, who wants any of that?

Prado has shown he can hit

Compare’s Prado’s career minor league OPS to Johnson’s. Compare’s Kelly Johnson’s career slugging percentage to Prado’s career slugging. Look at Prado’s career homer total. It’s f-ing TWO. Prado, throughout his professional career (minors AND majors) has hit 17 homeruns. That is just one more homerun than Johnson hit in 2007 alone. Prado’s defense is pretty poor as well, and the different in offense is bigger than the very small improvement Prado could possibly represent over Johnson at second base.

Infante has shown that he definitely can play the position more than adequately, so let KJ go.

Infante ain’t show diddly throughout his major league career other than the ability to play multiple positions, make outs at the plate at a rate worse than Francoeur and be an above-average utility player.

…if you’re really trying to build a contending team for next year.

If you’re trying to compete in 2009, you don’t give the starting job to start the season to punchless-Prado or Infante.

There is a reason Kelly Johnson would bring more back in a trade than Prado and Infante. There is a reason teams ask the Braves about Johnson in trade-talks more than Infante and Prado. Think about it.

Did Liberty buy the Braves as a write-off?

Yes, that’s in fact exactly what they did. Corporate ownership has many drawbacks, not the least of which, it seems, is a serious disinterest in positive fan relations. One of the reasons I was hoping Arthur Blank and co. would buy the team was, while the Falcons aren’t necessarily world-beaters, you know he wants them to be, and at least is a face attached to the franchise rather than a hollow conglomerate. You have to spend money to make money, from an ownership perspective, but I feel like there’s no incentive to do that, from Liberty’s perspective. The status quo is doing them a favor. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, I very well could be…

pretty true, Doc. Shaun his BoB and SO numbers aren’t really any improvement over last season on an at bats basis. he has about 2/3 as many ABs right now as he had last season and he has about 2/3 as many walks and the same ratio of Ks.

They need to keep playing him the rest of this season in hope of some indication that he can bounce back(after all Chipper had a total year worth of funk in 04), but I have no idea whether he can improve enough to be a viable starting RFer next season.

Whatever he does I kinda doubt that he will ever be any better than he was in 06 & 07, which offensively at least made him no better than a middle of the pack RFer.

As far as Francouer’s future, the man will not find it out the last few weeks of this season. Hopefully some time away from the game and by spring training or at least by the end of April he gets it together next season. If not I am ready to move on w/o him, I just hope the Braves are.

Bobby’s Cox, of all the stats that indicate plate discipline and types of batted balls, the only numbers that are significantly worse for Francoeur than his career averages are his groundball and flyball rates.

When he’s batting the ball, he’d not hitting it hard and far enough. Everything else is about the same or better than his career numbers. Not trying to downplay hitting the ball hard and far. That’s pretty darn important to his value as a hitter.

The types of hits and the K and BB rates show that Francoeur has the tools to be a decent major league hitter. He needs to keep improving on his K and BB rates while learning to hit the ball hard and far when he makes contact.

Now, you can make the argument that he was called up too soon. I certainly wouldn’t argue with that (although maybe the Braves feel they lack and have lacked significantly better options for the price). And I am certainly in agreement that Francoeur was over-hyped. And I was pretty adamant about Francoeur not being all that valuable even when others were satisfied simply with his RBI totals and what he did with runners in scoring position.

In no way am I saying Francoeur is likely to become a superstar. I’ve never been all that impressed with him. But I am saying that he’s not really as bad as his AVG/OBP/SLG numbers indicate and he’s got a good shot to become a halfway decent player in the majors.

Hopefully this clarifies my position once and for all. Trying to be as honest and objective as possible. I think so many on here have been pretty subjective about Francoeur throughout his short career on both sides. When he was racking up high RBI totals, a lot of people were ready to crown him the next Braves superstar. Now that he’s struggling, a lot of people are saying he’s never going to amount to anything in the majors. There seems to be a lack of a proper perspective on Jeff Francoeur as a baseball player. And I’m trying to just point out what is there for all to see, if we just do just a little bit of digging.

Nolie-Yes, I do think Frenchy can come back. Yes, I know his season has been (choose one or all) horrible, putrid, terrible (or supply any other descriptive term that doesn’t denigrate him as a person). However, I’ve got to believe that two and a half seasons of success (and yes, I also realize many here are upset that those seasons still didn’t live up to his hype) are not the aberration, but the ONE season of .220 and zero power is.

Look at what the reason for the decline may be. If it isn’t his health (including vision), which seems to be the common consensus and isn’t the fact that pitchers have “figured him out” (it really took ML pitching 2 1/2 years to figure out he swings at everything?), then the only reason left is that his mechanics are flawed (or totally f##ked up if you prefer). If it is a matter of flawed mechanics, he CAN get back to where he was for most of his short career. THAT is why I think he can return to his previous form.

Will he return to form? Who knows-only Coach is psychic (or is that psycho-hard to tell with Coach), but I’ve seen everyone from Pat Burrell and Chipper Jones (quite a range of talent there) come back from horrible seasons to post some pretty damned good numbers. I’m just not ready to count out a 24 year old with past success. This doesn’t mean I don’t realize how bad he’s been, just that I’m not ready to write him off-nor are the Braves.

that not likely for a 24 year old who has never had significant injury and was a pretty good player for 2.5 years prior.

does anyone remember the beginning of 2006? frenchy had a horrible start tot he season, and his batting average and OBP never recovered, but he figured it out and turned it around. hes going to keep working, and he will be a much better player in 2009.

DAP mccann could just catch 18 innings today. its allowed.

Haha! That is true…

I mean, it’s not that hot today…and BMac caught all 18 innings in That Play-Off Game.

But, I like your idea of Sammons catching Morton and letting McCann and Campillo go against Harden. Bobby needs to have BMac in the lineup against the “tough guy”.

(OK, now if Bobby plays McCann in game two, and he breaks his on-base streak, I guess it’s all on me…)

I know that Frenchy’s value to the team (as trade bait or as an everyday player) is at the lowest (hopefully wont go any lower) right now. Hopefully he will improve. But if he rebounds anywhere close to his 2005/2006 numbers would you still consider him as a cornerstone of the outfield? At the beginning of the season, we hoped he continues to grow and improve his numbers, but now the expectations have to be more tempered. So how much leeway should Frenchy be given next season? Shaun/Lew would what are your opinions..

Check this out:

I was looking up the last Braves/Cubs game we went to (Sept. 8, 2006…just a great game), and OK, I get the boxscore. Will Ohman pitched an inning and two-thirds for the Cubs (he intentionally walked Francoeur), and Grove was their catcher that night.

You know, if the baseball gods were to not frown upon us today and we were somehow able to sweep the Cubs in the doubleheader, and IF the Phillies lost tonight, we would only be 7 games out with 42 games left and half of those games are against leading divisional rivals. I am with Brian McCann, until the Braves are mathematically eliminated, I am not giving up hope just yet.

SRI-Opinions from Shaun and Me? Likely to get a pretty varied opinion from the two of us, for sure.

First, If I were Frenchy, I’d schedule an entire winter’s work with Daddy McCann (or TP, for that matter), and work the entire offseason on getting the mechanics back to normal (and maybe it’s just time to realize Jeff ain’t going to be a patient contact hitter-ever). Maybe if all of this work were done when there is little pressure on him, the results will be more effective and long term.

When we played the Nationals recently, I got the Nats feed on Extra Innings. Don Sutton made some interesting comments about Frenchy at the Bat. He thinks too much emphasis was made on changing his plate approach-that this whole thing about going to right and not worrying about power, not only goes against his natural inclinations, but now has him so messed up that he can’t find his way back to what worked in the past.

Could be. I sure wouldn’t rule it out. I wouldn’t mind so much if he didn’t do the right field thing, but WOULD like to see a better, more patient approach to his pitch selection-at least to keep him from flailing at the outside pitch. I might also try having him stride into a pitch to get his hips moving in the right direction and to keep his butt from moving straight back (ask Andruw how THAT works). DAP mentioned earlier that his hands move all around. This is also true, but if he were to tie his hand movements into the stride (bringing them back as he strides forward), it could synch his swing pretty well. He might have to improve his bat speed with a stride, but that’s where all of that extra strength he supposedly added could come in. I would also send him to Mac’s Yoga instructor. It sure didn’t hurt Brian and might be beneficial to Jeff, as well-helping him to avoid some of the tension at the plate.

That being said, I don’t really know how much leeway I would give Jeff next season. However, if he’s not doing something positive at the plate by the time the middle of May arrives, I imagine I would be looking for an alternative-ESPECIALLY if his defense hasn’t returned to what we know it should be. I do imagine, though, that BC will be more patient with him than I might be.

lew if he were to tie his hand movements into the stride (bringing them back as he strides forward), it could synch his swing pretty well.

you are right. moving the hands back in the swing is like pulling the hammer back on a pistol. then, in a stride, when the front foot plants, its like pulling the trigger. moving the hands back a little is not a problem, but at some point, they are supposded to stop, so that when you pull the trigger, they are in the right place to move through the zone. jeff’s hands are moving back, they are moving up, down ect. they might not ever be in the same place when he pulls the trigger.

when andruw eliminated his stride, he hit 51 homers. the reason is because his hands were so good, it was all he needed. the stride was just messing him up.

jeff just needs to simplify that swing, lose the toe tap and all that. pull back, step forward, plant, swing. try to kill the pitcher with the ball in every at-bat (not literally…) that will mean he is hitting it hard, andstaying right on the ball.

Marietta Dawg I got this information from the atlantabraves.com website about last nights rainout.

  1. Fans can use their 8/12 tickets for the make-up game scheduled for 1pm on 8/13. They can sit in the exact same seats as they hold for the rained out game.

  2. Fans can exchange their 8/12 tickets for any remaining Sunday-Thursday Braves home game during the 2008 season. This needs to be accomplished prior to the beginning of the make-up game tomorrow at 1pm.

  3. Comp tickets have no rain check value.

  4. There are no refunds.

  5. Fans with tickets left in will call for the 8/12 game can call the Braves prior to 1pm at (404) 577-9100 and make arrangements to have your tickets exchanged for a future Sunday-Thursday Braves home game during the 2008 season.

So yes, it seems as if you can use these tickets for any other home game through the rest of the year, but you still have to go prior to 1pm today.

Hope that helps you, if only a little.

DAP-It’s interesting. Back when McGwire was having his record breaking season, I watched him a pretty good bit. Almost every swing he put on a ball during that streak was identical to the last swing. This was almost like watching a Home Run Derby-the exact same approach used on every swing.

Now this is probably not what would be effective for a hitter like Chipper, who has an almost uncanny ability to do with a pitch what he wants, varying his swing and adapting to the situation, but with an erratic hitter like Francoeur, the same swing every time is definitely the way to go. Consistency would go a long way towards solving Jeff’s dilemma.

Lew,

Appreciate your optimism about Frenchy. There may not be much of a minor league season remaining, but you wonder if it’s not worth it to ship him out until September so he can at least play every day away from the big league microscope. And keep him away from Wellman, who seemed to encourage his worst habits (mainly aggressiveness).

Chipper and Burrell each had one bad season. But Chipper’s worst year (2004, .242/.368/.485) was much better than Francouer’s best (2005, .300/.338/.549). Burrell’s worst year was a real stinker (2003, .209/.309/.404) but again, every other season Burrell did at least as well as Frenchy and in several seasons better. Pat the Bat has always been much more selective.

I’m not sure what a reasonable estimate of Frenchy’s upside is at this point. In other words, if he does bounce back, will he be good enough to nail down a corner OF spot on a contender?

Thanks for your response Lew. I wanted Shaun’s and your thoughts, because both you seem to be the most optimistic about Frenchy rebounding(KC is the eternal optimist, but he is not around that often these days). Anyone else is welcome to chime in too (sorry did’nt mean to single you guys out). I was just wondering, if you were Wren how would you build this team for next season. I think that one should strongly consider the possibility that Frenchy may not rebound close to his 2005/2006 numbers. If he does, he is adequate for next season, but then I would still consider trading him (I would not make him a fixture in the outfield beyond next season, like Shaun says, he makes way too many outs for my liking). This makes the fourth outfielder we pick for next season really important for the success of the team. Because in May next year, we would not be able to trade for a replacement. We would have to find someone from within our organization. This makes Matt Diaz/Brandon Jones more valuable to the Braves. Or Wren would have to sign/trade for someone who would be willing to be a fourth outfielder but still be good enough to be able to take over as a regular (Juan Riveria?). But this also makes for signing a big hitting LF really important. Or would you rather plan for 2010 and hope 2009 would be a good season if all things fall in place.

I usually don’t contribute much to the blog (though read it every day), am trying to post more often. so sorry if I dont make sense.. I tend to ramble..

DAP I am always willing to admit when I am wrong, as I have been wrong so many times in my life!!

Actually, when I underestimate the value of a Braves prospect, then I am doubly happy if I am wrong.

As time goes by, I try to evaluate talent on 2-3 points (how well they are doing in the minors, how they may have performed on call ups, and what is the “buzz” about them from those who should know).

I don’t think Blanco had come up to Atlanta for much, and the “buzz” on him was lukewarm. That is why I would say I did not pick him to do well (or Prado for similar reasons).

To be honest, I am pleasantly surprised with Blanco’s season. He is coming on in the past 30 days, and his walks are helping a lot. I wish he had a tab bit more power, but heck, I wish Chipper had a tad bit more power too!!

Now, here is the question: Will Blanco be the starting CF’er for the next two seasons? My guess is he will settle into a 4th outfielder type slot, but that his lack of any real power will doom him eventually. A team can only ride with one or maybe two weak bats (weak meaning lack of power) and be successful.

This will be the downfall of Gregor Blanco, but let’s enjoy his success while it is here, and hope it continues. (I wish to be wrong as often as possible!!)

sri the way i would go at the situation with frenchy is to get ONE good outfield bat. just one. i wouldnt want to come close to giving the message that i dont think jeff is going to rebound. i think if jeff fails, you back him up with a diaz, b. jones. but the braves will have to send jeff a message that they believe in him, i think. so, one big bat for the outfield (burrell though i hope not, or ibanez…), hang onto infante and norton, and hope jeff bounces back. if he doesnt, b. jones can put up better numbers in a full season than jeff is right now…probably.

sri If I could throw my $0.02 in on your question: First, I think the Braves have to ride out the Francoeur train wreck. Lew and many others have identified what may be the core problem he is having. Time for the hitting coaches to go to work (where are Daddy Jones and McCann when you need them).

As for 2009 and 2010. Personally, I would prefer to not go for broke in 2009, but play toward a sustainably successful team. In other words, let’s not mortgage the future because Hudson has gone down. Let’s keep most of our top prospects and develop them.

Let’s go after a decent OF bat, and one or two decent arms. If the deal for a stud starter develops without giving away the farm, pull the trigger.

Let’s NOT spend 1/4 of our payroll on one pitcher, regardless of how good he might be today. (CC)

BravesFanInRockies-Dude, you’re falling into the same trap that many Denizens are regarding Francoeur. You’re taking one lousy season (and Yes, lousy doesn’t give credit to just HOW terrible it has been) out of four and considering it to be the norm when it’s the aberration.

We’ve discussed the possible reasons for this protracted slump ad nauseum. Since the only real reasons that might negate his ability to come back are injury, pitcher adjustment or age and apparently none of these is the case here, then like we discussed earlier, the only remaining problem would be his mechanics. Since mechanics are most DEFINITELY able to be altered back to what has worked in the past, then why should there NOT be optimism?

I know many comparisons to Andruw have been made, but is it really comparing apples to apples? AJ was a much older model with many more miles on him than Frenchy has. Not only was Druw older, but started his career about two years earlier than Frenchy did, breaking in at age 19. We all knew that AJ was going to break down eventually, due to the way he plays defense and the stress it put on his shoulders and legs. He self destructed quicker than many thought he would. Such is not the case with Jeff.

As to sending him down to the minors-I just don’t see what could be accomplished that would have any real or lasting value. First of all, there is barely any time left in the Minor League season and we saw what a few days down there did-NOTHING. As for Wellman-if he is that bad, then why exactly, is he still in an instructional position in the Braves’ organization? There must be SOMETHING that recommends him as a teacher of young players. Besides-since we really don’t stand a snowball’s chance in the Peachtree Road Race this season, why does it matter if he remains in Atlanta? I just see nothing positive to be gained by that move.

We may, when all is said and done, have to call this season a wash and let him try to work his way through it all this winter-OR use him as part of a trade. Given this year’s performance though, would he bring much of anything in return? I see many trade scenarios proposed here, but as usual, they mainly deal with dumping unpopular players or those who are NOT performing to expectations and trading them for other team’s superstars or more players who will likely underperform-very few of these deals make any sense at all or are unlikely in the extreme..

On a per plate appearance basis he’s actually improved his approach in terms of strikeouts and walks; the ratio is in fact not the same as last season.Shayn

It’s close enough to last season to be meaningless in determining whether its improvement or just year to year variation. C’mon man, the difference is tiny. You’re building a house of cards on a mud flat thinking that it definitely means anything. He’s got 85 Ks now in 438ABs. If he gets another 150+ABs he will probably be over 110Ks again;besides I don’t care much how often he strikes out his OBP,S% and OPS are all horrible, much worse than last year. Hell let him go back to striking out more if his important stats go back to where they were. In fact better a strike out with the bases loaded than all the double plays he has hit into with RISP.

I think he’s Juan Encarnacion Jr.at best and I have thought that since watching him come up through the minors.

Shaun Izturis and Figgins are both below .400 in Slugging percentage. As for Anderson and Rivera (getting more AB’s than the slumping Matthews), they are both above 400.

It would be a stretch to say they have 4 “weak” hitters in their lineup day in and day out. Usually only two, and maybe once in a while three (with no pitcher hitting).

Also, for an AL team, you must factor in the DH as a hitter, as most NL pitchers are definitely a weak hitter.
