Braves need an R.E.M.-like resurgence
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Gregg Allman’s “I’m No Angel” is playing on the stadium loudspeakers and Mark Kotsay is taking full-on cuts in the batting cage. That’s a pretty good start to a Sunday morning for me and for the Braves.
But Kotsay’s still at least a few days from returning. And I know you’re more interested in a couple others among the Braves’ walking wounded.
First, Chipper Jones is status quo. Day-to-day after his surprising pinch-hit appearance (and huge single) last night. Quad’s still messed up, and no word when he might be back in the lineup. But they obviously aren’t thinking DL, or he wouldn’t have hit last night.
Yunel Escobar’s is also unchanged. He’s got a strained hip flexor, injured Friday night. He ran well in his pinch-hit appearance last night, but he’s still sore and “not ready to play,” he said. He took BP and infield today, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s back in the lineup as soon as tomorrow.
Bobby Cox said the trainers have told him it’s a touchy injury, though, in that if he injures it any worse, if he tears it, he’d be out a couple months. So they’re testing him daily, doing strength tests, and also stressing to him the importance of being honest about how much discomfort there is in the hip.
Ruben Gotay is at third base and Omar Infante is back at shortstop after his uncharacteristic first-inning defensive gaffes last night. “Infante is a very good shortstop,” Cox said today, surely aware of what folks are thinking after watching those mistakes the veteran utility man made last night.
(Personally, I think Infante is strong defensively at every position he’s played. Just had an awful night. It happens.)
Why no Brent Lillibridge in the lineup? I think the Braves are trying to be careful and not throw him in there and have him go 0-for-4 again like he did in each of his two games when thrust into the lineup earlier this season at N.Y.
The Lil’ Bridge had a couple of three-hit games before he was called up, but he was still hitting .207 with 55 strikeouts in 208 at-bats at Richmond. He’s insurance right now because he can play three infield positions and even some outfield in a pinch.
Oh, and what’s this? No Jeff Francoeur in right field? Yes, it’s true.
Francouer is out of the lineup and Greg Norton is in RF. I asked Bobby and he said he told Francoeur in Texas last week that he was going to rest him in this Sunday day game. “He needs a breather,” Cox said.
Francoeur’s got some black-and-blue marks on his left arm where he was hit by pitches the last two nights, near the elbow and hand. He’s also got bruises on his shin from fouling a couple balls off.
Regardless of all that, most observers (including this one) would suggest he needs a day or two off because he’s struggling. Mightily.
Since May 27, Francoeur has hit .214 (21-for-98) with three homers, nine RBI and a .287 OBP in 25 games. The Braves are 9-16 in those games, and while there are many reasons for the losses, his lack of production is among those reasons.
He’s 4-for-32 with one walk and seven strikeouts in his past eight games, and in his past eight home games Francoeur is 6-for-33 with more double plays grounded into (two) than extra-base hits (one).
Brandon Jones is in right field today.
From frosty to sizzling: That’s what the Braves will see in the range of starting pitchers they’ll face today and tomorrow — the skidding Carlos Silva (3-5, 5.79 ERA) today and the streaking Ben Sheets (8-1, 2.74) in tomorrow’s series opener against the Brew Crew.
Silva’s overall numbers don’t reflect just how terrible he’s been lately. The man is 0-8 with an 8.49 ERA in his past nine starts, including losses in his past five starts. He is the coldest starting pitcher in baseball right now.
Sheets, on the other hand, is having a career season (he hasn’t been hurt, which is almost amazing). He’s given up more than three earn runs only twice in 14 starts, which is really, really good. He’s 4-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his past five starts, and he hasn’t lost on the road (5-0, 2.62 ERA in nine starts, with 48 strikeouts and 15 walks).
Then there are his numbers against the Braves. Oh, my.
Sheets is 8-3 in 11 starts against the Braves, including 6-1 with a 3.20 ERA in his past seven. In those seven starts he’s piled up a stunning 62 strikeouts with only six walks in 50-2/3 innings. Yes, 62 K’s, 6 walks in 50-2/3 innings.
He’s won all of his past five starts against the Braves, getting more than seven support runs per nine innings in that stretch.
R.E.M. is truly “back”: If their most recent album, the very strong Accelerate, wasn’t enough to completely convince me that R.E.M. had reclaimed its status as one of top rock bands in the world, last night was.
The boys from Athens, Ga., put on a phenomenal show at Lakewood here in Atlanta last night. Seriously, this was a great rock concert.
By the end of their approximate two-hour performance, I had forgotten (and no longer really cared) that I’d missed The National’s opening set (even though I do love that band, too). Rock shows should not start when the sun is still blazing overhead, unless it’s an all-day festival show, the kind that most middle-aged working dudes like me no longer attend.
Anyway, Modest Mouse’s middle set was fine, about as good as you can expect from a band that has to fill an opening slot for the huge headliner, and thus usually must play with lesser equipment and without all the bells-and-wistles visual effects, etc.
But R.E.M. would’ve blown away most bands on this night, which I’m assuming was pretty indicative of how they’ve played on this entire tour. They rocked hard, folks. Forget that mostly bland period between the excellent New Adventures in Hi-Fi album and the “comeback” blast of “Accelerate.”
If they were in danger of slipping from relevance for many younger rock fans (and I admit, they had), then they have certainly stepped forward with this album and this tour and answered any skeptics and critics, at least any who are actually paying attention and listening to the music.
Not only did they play every solid song from the new album, but I was pleasantly surprised - make that thrilled - that they played so many of the older gems, including “Fall On Me,” (with the greant former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joining on guitar), “Pretty Persuasion,” “Rockville” “Driver 8,” “Orange Crush,” “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?,” “Electrolite,” and a slightly speeded up, muscular version of “Harborcoat.” Sublime, it was.
I’ve seen R.E.M. 10 or 12 times since 1983, the year I saw them play at old Hoch Auditorium on campus at the University of Kansas, just after Murmur was released and was the hottest thing going on college radio.
Stipe had long, curly hair then, and kept his back to the audience for most of the show. Saw them every year for the next five or six years after that, as they’d release a new album annually - Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, Life’s Rich Pageant, Document, Green and tour annually.
While I have only vague memories of those shows, for some reason (ahem), I’ve got to say, I can’t recall the band ever being much better, much tighter, much more entertaining than they were last night. Honestly.
They had a truly remarkable run of high-integrity, high-grade and original rock and roll during the 1980s, no dud among those early albums. Other than Monster, they really didn’t have even a mediocre album until after drummer Bill Berry left the band for health reasons more than a decade later.
Now, after figuring I’d be one of the R.E.M. completists who buys every album they put out, regardless of critical reviews, on the day it’s released, for as long as they hung on, it’s been a really uplifting thing to see one of my very favorite all-time bands come back so strong.
These are musicians who are all older than me playing new songs so good that most younger, trendier, “edgier” bands with members half their age can only dream of ever producing if they stay together half as long as the boys from R.E.M. have. Not to mention the classics most of those bands will never produce.
More than 25 years later, R.E.M. is back kicking tail. For us of a certain age, who went to college in the early 1980s, that’s great stuff. Seeing them on that stage last night, doing their thing, it doesn’t get much better.
”LIVING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE” by R.E.M.
It’s only when your poison spins into the life you’d hoped to live
and suddenly you wake up in a shaken panic now
You had set me up like a lamb to slaughter
Garbo as a farmer’s daughter
Unbelievable, the gospel according to who?
I lay right down.
All your sad and lost apostles
hum my name and flare their nostrils
Choking on the bones you tossed to them
now I’m not one to sit and spin
because living well’s the best revenge
Baby, I am calling you on that
Don’t turn your talking points on me.
History will set me free
The future is ours and you don’t even rate a footnote now!
So who’s chasing you? Where did you go?
You disappear mid-sentence
In a judgment crisis I see my in and go for it
You weakened shill.
All your sad and lost apostles
hum my name and flare their nostrils
Choking on the bones you tossed to them
now I’m not one to sit and spin
because living well is the best revenge
and baby, I am calling you on that
You savour your dying breath
I forgive but I don’t forget
You work it out, let’s hear that argument again
Camera three… GO NOW!
All your sad and lost apostles
hum my name and flare their nostrils
Choking on the bones you tossed to them
now I’m not one to sit and spin
because living well is the best revenge
and baby, I am calling you on that
Baby, I am calling you on that
Baby, I am calling you on that

Checking in from the Great Northwest where the powers that be have decided I should be a Mariners fan. Sorry just can’t do it. One nice thing is that I get to watch this series on local TV. The bad thing is I have to listen to the Mariners announcers. These guys are just not good. The veteran announcer is being inducted to the Hall of Fame this year. Why? Just because he held his job so long?
I have been listening to Braves games over the internet lately (for free, but don’t let MLB know or I might end up in Baseball’s version of Gitmo) and I hope Atlanta citizens realize how lucky they are to have their announcing crew. It is great to hear Pete and Skip. A pleasant surprise is Mark Lemke. I have tried watching tv while listening to the Braves broadcast on the radio but there is a 10 or 15 second lag . Oh ,Well.
On a musical note Emmylou Harris has a new cd out and it is good. She is back working with her ex husband, Brian Ahern, who produced her first 12 albums. He knows how to record her.

Tex goes yard. They’d best rough up Silva, since everyone else has….
Snowball’s Chance: I gotta get that Emmylou CD. heard great stuff about it. You should listen to the new Aimee Mann CD. Also outstanding.
Best new rockin’ CD I’ve purchased: The Black Angels’ Directions to See a Ghost. As Josh at Ella Guru aptly described it, it’s a psychedelic freakout.
(But don’t let that scare you away. It’s a great rock record.)

Yeah, thanks for the review. I have seen REM play about 7 times, the best being at Chastain Park about 10 years ago. I wanted to try to get to Atlanta for this show but it just didn’t work out. REM is by far my favorite band- I love Accelerate. Awesome that they played Harbourcoat- they dusted off Camera and We Walk the last time I saw them. And- oh yeah- big win for the Braves last night.

Bravosimos, that cow is really big. Huge, in fact.
I like the too-slow chopping motion, when combined with its size and all the fireworks that go off from the nearby Coke bottle when Braves do something big like the walk-off last night.
To me, the imagery, it’s like something from a Yul Brenner movie, something the people of some ancient civilization might praise, or bow to, as someone suggested earlier. If it were painted gold, it’d be perfect.

J, one other thing: Regarding your choosing UGA in part because of REM. I’d love to see someone do a survey of all UGA students the past quarter-century, to see how many of them would mention REM or the Athens music scene in general as significant reasons they chose the school. I’d bet it’s higher than some might think.
I say that because my ex-wife, who’s from Miami, chose UGA in part because of REM (and in part because of football Saturdays). And she’s actually quite intelligent, notwithstanding the obvious stain of our relationship on her otherwise sparkling resume.

Wave your mighty Tomahawk Choppin’ hoof over us and bless these Braves. Bless this field on which we play, cause our errors to be few and the runs we score to be many! Bless us with health and cause our injuries to cease! May our pitchers arms be strong, and our bats productive. We will look to you for inspiration as you tower over us and view our games. Yea, I’m blind to the fact that Chipper is batting .366 in the 151 games since Teixeira joined the Braves. Coincidence? I think not.
That said, I can only hope and pray that Bobby Cox will see the light of day in that the Braves desperately need some speed and base running ability at the top of the order.
The evidence is indisputable. Atlanta is 4-19 in one run games and 12-16 versus left handed pitching.
And furthermore, anyone who would argue against my last statement, really doesn’t know nearly as much about this game as they should.
8-2 Braves is the final. Angels 3, Phillies 2 in the eighth.

nscoots carlyle, ring and acosta would have been better choices. You want boyer, ohman and bennett to get some rest.
No reason to expose gonzalez to anything in a 8-0 ballgame. Anything could happen, not to mention his arm, he could get hit by ball, twist ankle, etc. But, if that would be going over the board, letting his arm rest should be enough. I know he has not seen tons of action lately, but take in account that he is coming from the surgery room. He is ahead of schedule. If you dont have to…….just dont put him in.

Good grief. Ohman has pitched on consecutive days once since June 4. Once. In that time, he’s had two full days off between appearances twice. In that time, he’s gone less than an inning five times and more than an inning twice. He didn’t pitch yesterday.
Ohman is the primary LH in the pen and he needs work to remain sharp, as well as rest. His load this month has been about right to secure those two objectives.
I wouldn’t have cared if Carlyle or Ring had pitched late, but I got no problem with Ohman getting work in, either. While he may have been overworked early in the season, that’s not currently the case.

DOB,
Nobody ever came to perform a song about Chipper at the park either. I’m not sure why.
The nature of this division and this team is that, as of June 22, we have no idea what is going to happen from week to week, much less by late July. The Braves can’t wave the white flag because they’re in the hunt, but they certainly can’t rule out the possibility of waving the white flag before the end of July. I just don’t think there’s any real way to know what to expect from this team in the next month. If things are still unclear (which they probably will be just to spite the people who either think this team is “coming together” or “falling apart”) in late July, they’ll just hold onto Tex and hope that he can carry the team with a heavy-hitting August and September.

Yeah, Francoeur (I like the “643” nick! That’s good.) did get a curtain call in his first game. Don’t recall that any of the other rookies that year got curtain calls after their first homers…
OK—Did McCann get a curtain call after he hit that homer off Clemens in the playoffs? (Can’t believe I don’t know for sure. But none of the replays I’ve seen show a CC. And the only reason I know about Francoeur’s CC is because they show it in commercials and stuff, you know…) Thanks!

Good baseball by the Braves today. Didn’t see the game, but caught Braves Live highlights.
It’s a good sign to see TEX hit HR’s from both sides, and to score some runs against this wretched Mariners team.
Huddy threw a great game, I was becoming a bit skeptical about him b/c his last 2 starts he labored a lot, esp. the one in Texas.
So…a win without FRANCINE…and as DOB called it…you’ve got a tough righty tomorrow night Ben Sheets who owns the Braves…hopefully FRANCINE misses another game and they put the lefthanded sticks of Brandon Jones and Greg Norton.
Hopefully tomorrow’s lineup will NOT include FRANCINE, Yunel (make sure he’s ready to come back), and rest Chipper Jones again, unless you need a hit in a late game situation (like sat. night).
Play Infante, Norton and B. Jones instead.
Come on Bobby, load up the lineup wiht LH sticks tomorrow and hope Sheets makes a few mistakes. You gotta play small ball tomorrow, or else.
Meanwhile, I’m not jumping up and down b/c the Braves are back 4 games. They are still under .500 and the Phillies will turn it around.
Still, encouraged by the starting pitching lately. That will help keep you in ballgames, and hopefully the Braves rediscover the magic of hitting with RISP (Having FRANCINE out of there helps).

I was at the show last night as well. I was curious about your thoughts on the acoustic “Let Me In”. Unlike you I enjoyed Monster a lot, but LMI has always seemed kind of weak to me. But last night’s version with Stipe’s impassioned vocals blew me away. It was probably the first time I heard it and didn’t attribute Cobain to it. My friend (also a monster fan) didn’t care for it. C’est la vie.

Concerning the performance of Mike Gonzalez today, we can expect it to happen again.
Typically from the time a pitcher goes under the knife it takes a minimum of 8 months to resume baseball activities. While they can get back to the majors in just about a year, that first year is statistically a rough one. Full recovery to pre-surgical strength and success usually takes 18 to 24 months.
Gonzo is healthy and he can pitch. However, he will alternately look great one day and horrible the next because he is only thirteen months removed from surgery.

On the other hand, during the last ten games our starting pitching has been stellar and I’m talking outstanding !
In the last ten games the starting pitching has seven quality starts with an ERA of 3.31, they have pitched into the sixth inning during eight of the last ten games and gone 4-3 with two shut out efforts from the starting pitcher.

As for blaming Bobby Cox, explain this rationally:
Check this out, Manny Acosta has been scored upon in six of his last ten appearances.
His ERA has risen from 2.54 to 4.34, Acosta has given up 15 hits and 14 runs in his last nine innings pitched during these last ten games with one strike out and eight walks.
Why , Why ,Why in the NAME OF GOD would any manager in his right mind keep running Acosta out to the mound ! JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH !

And enough about bashing Cox for throwing Acosta out there. Who else would you throw out there? If he throws out Ohman or Bennett, he gets bashed because they are overused. The reason they are overused is because they have been pretty good. Is Cox gonna put Ring, Ridgeway, or Carlyle? Soriano isn’t available, Moylan is out for the year, Gonzo is just getting back-and he’s our closer-so what else does he have to go with? I don’t think Bobby would choose Acosta if he had Moylan, Soriano, and Gonzo to choose from-but the fact is that all we have is Acosta, Bennett, and Ohman, with Gonzo on occasion.

Coach I dont expect Gonzalez to have that many bad performances. I get your point, and it is possible and there is a big chance it goes like thay, but It looks like Gonzo is feeling and recovering extremely well. He is “young” and sounds like a guy that goes for it. He is not sitting around waiting for things to magically happen.

Crazy stat of the day. Between Richmond and Atlanta, Charlie Morton has made 14 starts, pitched 90 innings and are you ready for this? He has given up exactly ZERO HR’s. That’s keeping the ball in the park.
Ready for an even crazier stat? Are you ready for this?
Chuck James has pitched 43 innings this season at AAA Richmond and has not given up a homer. Only 19 homers allowed in 422 career minor league innings for good old Chuck and Duck. That Chucky James sure can keep the ball in the park.
Coach, ask Charlie Morton how he likes them apples?

JEB: “Will we need a closer for Mondays game?? It might be a close one with Sheets pitching.”
JEB, I thought the exact same thing. I really hate to criticize BC so ofter, as I have of late… but this is another error in judgment, in my humble opinion.
I understand that he hasn’t pitched in a few days, and you want to get him a little work. BUT we’re talking about a guy that probably isn’t ready to pitch on back-to-back nights.
So now that we’ve used him in an 8-0 game (heading into the 9th), he will likely be unavailable tomorrow. And as you pointed out, Ben Sheets is on the mound. If we manage to reach the 9th with a lead, does anyone really expect it to be more than a run or two with Sheets on the mound???
Unless Soriano is due back tomorrow (I heard he was going to be activated soon, but not sure when)… this made no sense at all.
If we actually reach the 9th with a lead tomorrow, and can’t hold it, it will be another “L” to hand *directly around Bobby’s neck.

That stolen base was great
Great? Not really. That stolen base was a mildly interesting human interest story kind of like when that retarded kid came off the bench a few years back to score 20 points in the fourth quarter of a high school basketball game
Makin’ a late run for that starting job (not that he was never in the running, or shouldn’t have been. He’s been GREAT all year):
Well, McCann was handed an All Star nod last year that he didn’t earn with his mediocre hitting and subpar defensive play so it must be evening out this year

BSJ, I really liked “Let Me In” last night, with very similar thoughts as you had about it. All the slower stuff was done with grace and emotion last night, very strong, not like the typical lull for audience members to go get a beer or use the bathroom.
I swear they must have done about 30 songs last night. We were going over them afterward, counting them off top of our heads, and I know it was over 25.
Great, great show. Loved the old stuff, and all the stuff off Accelerate, especially with the video they played for Man-Sized Wreath. Well done, fellas.

As for blaming Bobby Cox, explain this rationally:
A rational being can not rationalize with an irate irrational irritant even when asked to by the irate irrational irritant to rationalize with the irate irrational irritant
Rationalization with the irrational is not possible so the rational being will not rationalize the managerial decsions with the irate irrational irritant.

the past week and half could have been the most important stretch of the season, after getting swept by the phils and cubs, with the injuries, the braves seemed to be on a death march that end the season, however, they stayed the course and won a couple of series, and sit 4 games back, the same stretch the phils have fallen apart and don’t look ready to run away with anything, their pitching is finally (minus hamels) looking like what it really is… medicore at best.
that being said, the braves really havent fixed anything, more players are hurt, gonzo coming back should be big, dissmiss the runs today, everyone knows how closers are, the more important thing was that he was throwing 93-94, he’ll be motivated by this preformance, but overall, this team is alive, but still needs to get healthy and probably get outfield power bat, plus have frenchy come out of his slump, good news is, hopefully worst baseball is behind the team, keep winning series, 90-92 wins will take the east at most

GOOD NEWS FOR THE BRAVES:
The Braves have had their share of #&@!% luck, but here are some positives (in no particular order)…
• Despite everything that’s happened, the Braves are only 4 games back.
• Chipper pinch-hit last night, which proves the Braves don’t think they’ll need to disable him.
• Escobar should be back tomorrow.
• After a disaster on Friday, the bullpen has looked good the past couple nights (don’t hold today’s performance against Gonzo… that sort of thing often happens to closers when they pitch in a blowout).
• Tex may FINALLY be breaking out.
• The rotation continues to roll.
• Kotsay appears close to a return.
• Hampton made an encouraging rehab start the other day, and may be back at the all-star break.
Don’t laugh about Hampton. He was healthy all spring and pitched effectively for a solid month before the pectoral thing. Now, KEEPING him healthy is something else entirely… but odds are good that he’ll be back in a few weeks.

DOB - I was at UGA from fall of 1988-1992. honestly, i never imagined i’d go to school anywhere else. My folks were UGA grads, my siblings went to UGA and several members of my family were season ticket holders for as long as i can remember. i grew up in and around Sanford stadium.
so while it was never a question of if I would go to UGA, monday nights at the uptown with widespread panic and all the great bands that came thru the 40 watt club and broad street are a big part of my memories of that time. I wouldn’t have traded my years at UGA for a full paid scholarship to Harvard. And that’s the truth.

That means he’s had as many as Chipper’s gotten in his entire career in Atlanta. That’s ridiculous. DOB

Teixeira had a great day but overall he is having a bad season. 13 home runs and 55 RBI before July sounds good, but he should have 20 and 75 if he is hitting behind Chipper.

Lets’s hope Gonzo’x struggles are a product of the whole ‘closers dont pitch well in 8-0 games when getting some work’ thing. I know a lot of people are going to rip BC for pitching him, but Gonzo needed to get an inning in at home and he got it. He will be fine. I hope BC lets this lineup go for one more game, there is no sense in rushing Chip, Yunnel, and Frenchy back in vs. a braves killer in Sheets. Tomorrow might be a good time to punt one. Besides sometimes punting is a good play.

Efrim: If the Braves are in a great position at the trade deadline… then no, I wouldn’t mess with the team that drastically.
However, if they’re kind of on the bubble, and IF the Braves don’t feel they can re-sign Tex… I would favor making that hypothetical trade (Tex, KJ, B.Jones, Lillibridge… for Kotchman and Figgins).
IF, a month from now, the Braves front office is quite uncertain where they’ll end up this year, I think a trade like that makes sense.
I say that because it would allow us to get a substantial return for Tex, while still allowing us to compete this year.
Figgins has been one of the best leadoff men in the game for the past several years, and you would have him under contract through 2009.
Kotchman is solid offensive first-baseman, and an excellent fielder. And he won’t be eligible for free agency for a number of years.
Figgins, Escobar, Jones, McCann, Francoeur, Kotchman, Kotsay, Diaz…
That’s not a bad lineup. And Figgins makes 7 mill a year less than Tex, which would give the Braves more flexibility to go get another big bat over the winter.
In short, I think a trade like that allows the Braves to set themselves up nicely for next year, without giving up on this year’s team. However, again, if we’re within 4 or 5 games at the deadline… no, I wouldn’t make that move.

Coach (Put up, shut up, do or die):
I wouldn’t compare James’ ability to that of Charlie Morton. I certainly agree with you there (as do the Braves, or else James would be in ATL right now).
However, I am going to challenge you a little bit on Chuck James.
From the time James came up to Atlanta in 2006, until his shoulder trouble started (about 2/3 of the way through last year)… James was a very good starter for the Braves.
Over that span (which was about 40 starts)… he went - I believe it was - 18-11, with an ERA of about 3.70.
Heading into his last start of July last year (again, 2/3 of the way through the season), we was top-15 in the league in ERA.
In between DL stints in the last 2 months of last season, he was obviously terrible. But he also wasn’t healthy.
This year, in 5 stats, he’s been equally terrible… so the Braves wanted to give him PLENTY of time at Richmond to prove he has his crap together before trying him again in the ATL rotation.
He certainly has his flaws. Namely - he runs up a pitch count in a hurry, and gives up too many HRs.
But let’s not forget that 40 start stretch that spanned into the second half of next year. That, coupled with his dominance at Richmond so far, makes me believe that he could still be an asset to this team at the bottom of the rotation.
Now, once again, I agree that Morton has more potential, and that Morton has pitched to well so far to do anything other than to keep sending him to the hill. I wouldn’t favor James over any of the guys currently in the Braves rotation.
All I’m saying is… he might deserve a little more faith and respect than you’re giving him. I think you’re working entirely on very short-term memory where James is concerned.

Stuart, I’m not in the least bit concerned by Gonzo’s performance today. It is VERY normal for a closer to struggle in a meaningless outing.
And YES, many people - including me - are going to rip Bobby for pitching him today.
If there were an off day tomorrow, then it would make perfect sense to pitch Gonzo today, to get him some work.
Or if Gonzo were at a point where he could pitch on back-to-back nights, it wouldn’t be that bad a move to put him out there tonight.
But given that he is now, in all likelihood, unavailable tomorrow for a game in which we’ll be opposed by Ben Sheets… I don’t think it made any sense to pitch him tonight simply to let him get some work in.
In fact, I think it was decidedly nonsensical.

CHOP CHOP: You understood exactly what I meant (tongue in cheek), about the cow as a false idol, etc. Your post was hilarious. Wish I’d worded it that way….
STAMPER: Little jab at The National? No, not at all. And I can’t even see how you’d read that into what I wrote. Love that band, have three albums or EPs they’ve put out, and Boxer was one of my three favorite albums last year. Saw them open for Arcade Fire and they were terrific.
Just don’t like seeing bands I enjoy have to open as the first band on a three-band bill and go on before 7 p.m. with everyone milling around finding seats and talking.
As for REM: You really expect me to believe you’re an REM fan if, 1. You didn’t like that show, which every fan I talked to around our seats and afterward in the parking lot said they loved, or 2. You actually were surprised or offended by Stipe’s political message.
I say that because if you don’t know that Stipe leans way left and that he has never kowtowed to anyone or worried about offending, then you don’t know much about him and the band. I mean, you really didn’t think you’d hear Stipe express a political opinion in an election year? Come on, get a clue.
By the way, don’t be a hypocrite: You’re here complaining about what Stipe said, when it was a The National T-shirt that he held up, with Obama on it and Mr. November. Come on, were you completely unaware of that, too?
Did you see the T-shirts for sale in the merchandise booth? The National is the band selling the ones with Obama on them. It’s what the song’s about.
So burn your The National CDs, or is it OK if the put it on a T-shirt long as they don’t say it to offend you?
Oh, and Pearl Jam? You don’t find them overtly political? Were you awake during the show? If you really are offended by political messages from bands, I’d just suggest might want to be more careful how you spend you bucks on future shows.
Personally, I don’t care what an artist’s views are, or rather I’m certainly not going to act as though I have any right to dictate what he/she says. You don’t like it, then next time don’t spend money to see the band. That’s your recourse. Your ONLY recourse. Otherwise, it’s rock ‘n’ roll, my man. Your rules of etiquette or your expectations don’t matter.
And no, he didn’t compare MLK and Obama. He said he wrote a song about the desecration of MLK’s grave, and he said he hoped Georgia would help elect Obama. I don’t think it was in the same sentence, but I could be mistaken.
We don’t do politics on this blog, Stamper.
By the way, where was “It’s the End of the World?” Are you serious? That’s one of two songs they didn’t play that you wanted to hear?
That’d be about No. 125 in the REM catalog if they asked me to list them in order of preference.
Would’ve loved to hear Radio Free Europe, Sitting Still and others, but a great band can only play so many in a two-hour set. 28 songs is quite a lot by most standards.

Not sure if this got around because I seldom read anyone’s post but Friday night watching Seattle’s announcers here was their breakdown:”If the game is close, we win, if it’s a one run game, we win, if it’s extra innings, we win. The Braves aren’t winning any of these games.” And finally, “The road to the world series doesn’t go through Atlanta anymore”. Crazy Stats,
Chuck is pitching well in the minors as he has throughout his minor league career. Put him on a team that plays in a big ballpark (even one more pitcher-friendly than Turner) and he could be lights out in roughly half his starts.
So I wonder if he might be made available between now and the deadline for a hitter. In San Diego, Seattle, SF, Oakland he might do very well.
The problem with this scenario is that San Diego, Seattle and SF are looking to add hitters not move them. Oakland? They have a few young guys. You never know.

Stamper, as a long-time music fan, you surely know that bands play most of the stuff off the album they’re touring in support of, right? I mean, REM’s not doing a greatest-hits tour; they’re touring in support of Accelerate. So they’re going to play most of Accelerate in addition to various songs they choose to play from previous records. And like most other great bands with longevity, they’ve got a lot of songs to choose from, so the set changes on a night-to-night basis.
You go see Dylan or Springsteen or U2, they’re not going to play every great song off every album. It’s inevitable that a handful of your favorites are going to be left out, and a handful (or more) that you don’t particularly like are going to be played. I like all the stuff they played off the new album, including “Houston.” Very good song.

Scoots got it right when he said anything can happen. Look at last year and the Mets and Phillies over the last 17. For that matter, we’ve gone 6-7 over the last 13 games and actually gained two and a half on the Phillies. After losing six in a row to the Phillies and Cubs, I doubt there was anyone here (myself included) that would have thought it possible.

BravesFanInRockies:
I don’t know how much time I want to spend defending a hypothetical trade that will never happen (and that I would only conditionally favor)… but here are my counterpoints to your last post.
Tex’s trade value won’t be nearly what it was when Texas traded him to us. If the Angels traded for him, they would have no better than a 50% chance of retaining him beyond this year (even if they’re willing to participate in a bidding war).
Figgins is one of the best leadoff men in the game. He makes 7 million less than Tex, and he’s under contract for one more season. He’s also a Georgia boy, which could work a bit in the Braves favor, should they want to re-sign him after the 09’ season.
Given the DISTINCT possibility that Tex would only be a 2-month rental for the Angels… I consider Tex for Figgins to almost a wash.
Understand, I don’t think they’re players of equal value… but contract status plays a role, which is why I think we’d need to include a mid-level prospect or two.
If we trade for Figgins, he has to have somewhere to play (2B), and we would need a first-baseman… so including Kotchman from the Angels, and KJ from the Braves, makes sense. Especially since they appear to be 2 players of comparable skill and value.
This hypothetical deal would create 2 problems for the Angels. First, they would need a third-baseman. KJ could probably play there, but he’s not experienced at 3B. Also, they would be without a true leadoff man at the top of their order.
That’s another reason why I think we’d need to include a prospect or two to make the deal attractive to LAA.
Understand, after his performance at AAA this year, I don’t think of B.Jones as anything more than a mid-level prospect. I’m glad he’s been productive since his call-up, but I suspect it’s fools gold.
And Lillibridge has been hitting around the Mendoza line all year at AAA, while striking out more than once every 4 at-bats. As a leadoff-type of player, I just don’t see him hitting enough to stick at the big league level.
I don’t think all that much of B.Jones, and I think very little of Lillibridge as a prospect, which is why I would not be opposed to throwing them into any such deal to reap whatever trade value they may have.
Again, I would only favor a trade like this if the Braves were on the bubble this season (not in the thick of the pennant race)… and ONLY if the Braves didn’t like their chances of re-signing Tex.

Lew: Yup. We shouldn’t forget about the Mets. They have a lot of talent, and could wind up making a run.
I’m very happy to see that Oliver Perez has come back to earth after a great 07 season. And Pedro hasn’t been able to put it together.
But if one or both of those guys can figure it out, they could be in the race till the very end.

Today’s game was a flashback to the mid 90’s - dominant pitching, dominant offense (weak opponent didnt hurt the equation) = no decisions needed from Cox = BRAVES WIN
The thing is the past two games are an ILLUSION.
Last night was an accident. They won despite Cox’s mistake that cost them a run. The picture that showed McCann with Cox told it all - Cox absolutely has the expression on his face that the kids with chromosomes do when they win at Special Olympics - the ‘I have no idea whats happening but all my friends are cheering so I’m grinning” face
And today they couldve won withOUT a manager - in fact I daresay they did - if Cox had done anything, it wouldve been at LEAST 8-5

I was just reading a story about the Detroit Pistons’ interest in trading for Carmelo Anthony. As some of you know, the Detroit Pistons have been called the NBA’s “Atlanta Braves” because they’ve only won one title despite being a top contender the last six seasons. Anyway, I was reading the Detroit Free Press story and found this quote from Pistons GM Joe Dumars regarding the Pistons’ recent problems:
“There are no sacred cows here,” Dumars said. “You lose that sacred-cow status when you lose three straight years.”
The Pistons will NEVER be the Atlanta Braves. We have a big f*** sacred cow out in left field!
Suck on that, H8RZ!!!!

I see all the experts are out again today questioning Bobby on everything. Why o’ why don’t teams look to this blog? It’s so full of baseball geniuses with 20/20 hindsight vision!
Gonzalez said he could go back-to-back after the Rangers’ game. Why can’t he now?
No one is giving up anything of value for Chuck James right now. If the Braves show no confidence in him when Smoltz, Glavine and Hampton are gone; then that is a big red-flag to other teams.
I don’t care if they are 10 games out, heck, 20 games. Throwing in Kelly Johnson, Brandon Jones and Lillibridge on top of Tex for Figgins(free agent after 2009) and a first baseman with a 780(?) career OPS isn’t my kind of return.
Amen. Trading Teixeira for Kotchman and friggin’ Figgins is bad enough. Throwing in a solid offensive .800+ OPS second baseman and a good LF prospect and a good SS prospect? Completely nuts.

As I think back about today’s game, it impresses me that not having Francouer in the lineup really did make a difference. There was no one to kill a rally. How many times have we seen JF come up in a clutch situation, fail to produce anything and then our offense just shuts down for the rest of the game? Cox stuck JF in there to pinch hit today with two on and he struck out. I say we keep JF on the bench for a while or let him platoon with Brandon Jones.

SNIPER-69: Wow man… taking shots at my “character”? Really?
I’m hurt. =)
Especially after I just showed the Mets some respect by posting “don’t forget about the Mets” a short time ago this evening.
You apparently didn’t read my posts prior to the start of the season. I predicted that the Braves and Mets would both win well over 90 games, and would finish within a few games of one another in the standings.
I thought a great deal of your beloved Mets heading into this season. But if you want to get pi$$y about it… I’ll add the following:
The Braves lost their best starter (Smoltz), and one of their 2 best relievers (Moylan) for the season… and our closer, Soriano, has been unable to pitch for most of the season thus far.
There have been numerous other injuries, but all the other injury trouble after Smoltz, Moylan, and Soriano is probably comparable to what the Mets have endured (Hampton and Pedro are in pretty much the same boat, for instance) so I won’t even bring up the other injuries.
Let me ask you this…
Where would the Mets be without their best starter and two best relievers? If you were without Santana, Wagner, and Schoeneweis pretty much all season… where do you suppose the Mets would be right now?
They sure as hell wouldn’t be anywhere close to .500.

Figgins is one of the best leadoff men in baseball.
Whether or not Brandon jones is a good prospect is debatable.

I don’t believe it….
My 14 yr old daughter asked if we could “go somewhere” today. I asked her where, she said Atlanta. (We live in Central Alabama, 2 1/2 hrs away.)
I asked her what did she want to do, she asked if the Braves were playing in town…..
I told her they were, But Chipper (her favorite player) and Escobar were hurt, and McCann probably would not play, (Day game after a night game…..Obviously I was wrong)
We have already been to 3 Braves games this year, So she asked if she could bring a friend and go to 6 Flags…I said OK…
Twice in the park, (totaling almost 3 hours) they shut down rides because of thunder. I’m ok with that…better be safe than sorry, although it did not rain…We were there 8 hours, and only rode 6 rides…
We get back to the car @ 8:00, & the first thing I heard on the radio is that Tex had hit 3 homeruns…….
My daughter then said that she knows I would have rather gone to see the Braves (she’s right…smart girl…) rather than to go to 6 Flags, and she appreciated me taking her & her friend….
She then told me that in hindsight, she wished we would have gone to see the Braves game too….She’s never seen anyone hit 3 homeruns in a game before….(I told her neither have I)
She started asking me questions about the Braves, how were they doing this year, If Smoltz and Glavine were going to be OK…..The last thing she asked me was, how is the “cute Right fielder” doing this year…..
I just laughed and said not as good as last year…….
Seriously Maybe today was Tex’s wake-up call, and if Bobby was smart, he’d bench Franceour tomorrow as well
It is nice to gain 2 games on the Phillies this week-end……

KC: I think with your trade idea, you’re selling low on b jones and lil’ bridge. These are talented players who haven’t played well this season. Are they future all-stars? Who knows? But treating two of your team’s top 10 prospects as throw-ins in a trade wouldn’t make much sense. Luckily, this won’t happen. Forgot to mention…
Tex was being interviewd on ESPN radio, and Steve Phillips asked the question IF the Braves are out of it by the end of July, could you see a scenerio where you got traded….
Tex sounded a little p** off by that comment….
Tex said that first of all, the Braves would not be out of it, the Braves are only 4 or 5 games out of first with 12 more to play against the Phillies
The fact that the Braves are a 500 team with all of our injuries so far is a testament to the patience of Cox (I’m not saying I agree w/it….just reporting what he said)
WHEN the Braves get the rest of the line-up back, things will definately change.
As far as him getting traded before the deadline. He was sent here for a reason, and that is to help the Braves go the World Series, and that’s what he is going to try to do, he said he failed at it last year, he’s not going to fail 2 years in a row

KC, I agree with you on Lillibridge. He is having an awful season. As a prospect, he has little trade value right now.
The flip side is, one season does not make a player. Before 2007, the kid SS with the baby face was regarded as the heir apparent to Renteria. That all changed with the emergence of Escobar.
I’m not going to give up on Lillibridge and neither will upper management. You have to remember, he is only in his third minor league season. But, his strike out totals thus far are curious, lillibridge had 104 k’s in 06, 119 k’s in 07 and 47 so far in 08.
The young SS is solid on defense with a great throwing arm, good power and blazing speed. Lillibridge has to improve his strike out to walk ratio before he can be considered a legitimate big league SS.
Overall, Lillibridge is versatile, can play multiple positions, has a quality glove with good range and speed, needs repetitions in AAA as his bat is sorely in need of some seasoning.

Time to bust Bobby’s chops again.
Lillibridge isn’t ready for the big time and Cox knows it. The young SS needs playing time in Richmond as much or more than any prospect in the entire Braves organization.
So why is he with the Braves when Diory Hernandez is tearing up minor league pitching (.312 BA), has an overall BA of .274 in six minor league seasons with fully twice the professional experience of Lillibridge?
The Braves have three roster spots open on the 40 man. Hernandez, who hit .308 in 2007 and .312 so far in 2008 is ready, while Lillibridge needs to be getting playing time in Richmond is called up, what gives? Who is running this Circus?

Coach Smith, I agree with your assessment of the team except I don’t think Chipper will be ready to play tomorrow. He looked extremely gimpy trotting to first on the hit yesterday. prattvillenolzfan Nice. It’s always good to hear success stories. :) Also, thanks for posting that stuff about Tex.
I saw this on Starks column about Tex.
Don’t mess with Tex: What’s up with all that speculation that the Braves are on the verge of making Mark Teixeira available? Clubs that have inquired about him said they were shot down instantly. An official of one team says he was told the Braves believe “they’re not even remotely out of it.” So they’re still looking to add pitching, not subtract cleanup hitters.
Also…
•Price of the Giambino: Two months ago, we would have set the odds of Jason Giambi’s returning to the Bronx next year at approximately, well, zero. But we’re hearing the Yankees have sent signals to Giambi that, assuming he stays healthy and reasonably productive, they would be amenable to bringing him back next year. There’s zilch chance they’ll pick up his $22 million option. But a modest one-year offer, on top of his $5 million buyout, apparently is no longer out of the question. Who’d have thunk it?

I’m not so sure that either of them are really good prospects at this point, especially Lillibridge.
But you could be right. As long as they play for Atlanta (or in the ATL system), I certainly hope they both prove me as wrong as can be.
And has for the hypothetical trade I brought up… as I stated before, I would only be in favor of such a deal on a few different conditions.
I never meant to give it this much conversation, because I don’t really expect the Braves to be “on the bubble” a month from now. I think they’ll be right in the thick of things.
And if that’s the case when the deadline approaches… I wouldn’t want to see them make any move that alters the core of this team.
Hopefully, we will be right there in the middle of (or even atop) this race by the end of July, and the only thing we’ll be looking to do will be to add a couple complimentary pieces.
I am still in favor of getting Ryan Freel (who wears out lefties) to platoon with Blanco. And of course, we still need to add a proven arm or two to the bullpen.
If we can make a couple moves like that soon, I like our chances.

I don’t think you can draw clear lines between positions anymore.
It used to be true that it was MUCH easier to find offense at 1B than it was to find it at 2B or SS… but that has largely changed.
Middle infielders with pop are not at all rare anymore. And first-baseman who can hit .300 and play gold-glove defense do not grow on trees.
Again, the hypothetical trade I brought up really isn’t worth anymore conversation. I really just threw it out there as a convo piece on what could be done if things didn’t improve for the Braves. But unbelievably… we’ve actually picked up a couple games over the past couple days.
And some other positives have things looking up in Atlanta. I don’t think the Braves are going to be in a position where they’ll seriously consider trading Tex.
I say, add a little more offense (from the right side of the plate)… and add a bullpen arm or two… and we’ll be on our way.

KC, hypothetical trade or not, Teixeira is going nowhere. The Brave traded five young prospects for him, his greatest value is with Atlanta.
Teixeira may or may not resign with the Braves, we will just have to wait and see. The bottom line is, Tex is the exact type of offensive and defensive catalyst to build this franchise around.
Teixeira, McCann, Escobar, Johnson and even Francoeur are keepers. Yea, you can’t judge a player on one single season.
As for the pitching. Morton, Reyes and Jurrjens are the foundation with more young arms on the way.
As for Chipper, all that knowledge and savvy combined with Hall of Fame talent and Tex backing him up has led to this season. The problem is, Hoss has bad wheels and they are falling off. Nobody knows how much longer Chipper can play, not even Larry Wayne Jr.
Smoltz and Glavine are almost done, sad to say. All those kids I mentioned at the beginning of this post are the future. That is where the focus should be.

I think Chipper could extend his career and avoid major injuries if he took it easy in April and took scheduled days off like normal 36 yr old players do. But he can only do that when these players start performing like today without him playing everyday.
Sometimes we don’t see how the team’s lack of performace w/o him these past years has actually led to some of his injuries. Just like how some folks say we need to trade Tex and granted he’s not going to hit 3 homers a game but today and recent days bring up a big point, on days when Chipper needs rest, whether it be next year or however many more years he plays whose going to be that big bat everyday. Mac can’t play every sigle day, and in this day and age if you don’t go ahead and sign someone to a contract prices to get someone will just keep going up and up. Cause more than likely if we get another 1st basemen it’ll be through free agency and those just equal bidding wars for players who you know nothing about.
With Tex I think it’ll come down more to which team will give him more years.

The new power rankings are out. The Braves are 16th, 7th in the N.L.Coach
Whew, that’s important stuff, “THE” power rankings. Which ones are those, since about half the major newspapers in America and a dozen different websites all do their own individual rankings, usually at the whim of one writer sitting there trying to distinguish this team’s 3-4 record on this homestand over that team’s 2-5 record on a road trip in this particular week, blah blah blah.
Yeah, Coach, that’s important stuff when determining who’s going to be in the playoffs 3-1/2 months from now. The old “power rankings.” Like the BCS rankings, aren’t they? The highest-rated teams after the division champions are declared the wild-card winners, right?
No, that’s not how it’s determined? Then power rankings must be used used to determine home-field advantage in the playoffs, right?
No, not used for that, either? Oh. Well, I’m sure they’re important for something. Thanks for sharing whatever particular “power rankings” you cited that are hot off the presses.
I think I’ll keep paying more attention to games out of first place and the teams ahead of the Braves in the actual standings, be it division standings or wild-card standings. Since that actually has, you know, some relevance.

Bubdylan, I’ve got nothing personal against Stamper, nothing whatsoever. No problems with the man. Not a big deal, really. Just telling him how I feel.
How would you propose that I “compromise” or throw him a bone? I think he’s dead wrong about the show last night (I found it to not just a good show, but a great one; he found it to be merely OK); and I think he’s wrong about Accelerate (I think it’s a very good album; not the equal of their early classics, as I’ve said, but right there with New Adventures, a very good album; he doesn’t much care for Accelerate).
We’re all good. Big difference of opinion. But I never understand, and never will, those people who act surprised or whatever by an established artist’s expression of political views, especially when those views are in line with the views said artists has expressed for years and years.
And I’m not understanding the complaints about the band playing “only” two hours. Sorry, but how many acts do you see that play longer than two hours? So Pearl Jam played nearly 3 at Bonnaroo, and the Boss used to play 3 hours or longer. And the Dead always did, too, with an “intermission.”
Still, two hours is not a brief show. No complaints from me about that. I’ve seen too many artists play barely an hour to complain when one does 28 songs and plays two hours or slightly longer, whatever it was Saturday. It’s the quality that should count anyway, long as the show’s not unusually short.

Did I hit a raw nerve or something? Or just maybe it’s the truth of the situation. Yes, the Braves are only four games back, which is as close as this team has been in quite sometime.
They are also under .500 (38-39) while struggling to stay relevant in the playoff race. 50 of the remaining 85 games are against teams with better records than the Braves. Atlanta has to win almost exactly the same amount of games to be in the thick of the playoff race come September.
Also, Don’t expect the Phillies to keep losing. They are relatively healthy and of course, that offense won’t stay down for long.
Basically, we are asking a sub .500 team to play at least .588 ball the rest of the season. It’s a tall order and while the team may be up for it, I have ZERO confidence in Bobby Cox.

One other thing O’Brien. What is the best time to put Chipper on the D.L.?
I’m thinking right after the Philadelphia series (1-3 July). After it, the Braves play nine games with the Astros, Dodgers and Padres with one off day, then the four day all-star break hits. Thats fifteen days altogether and Hoss only misses nine games. Those three teams all have worse records than the Braves currently do.

First, thanks to KC for getting multiple mentions of both Ryan Freel AND Chone Figgins into the blog, over the last couple of days, LOL. I know he’s doing it just to irritate me, but that’s OK, my friend.
Robert says Saturday was just an accidental win, but…wasn’t one of the big gripes from posters here that good teams are supposed to “find ways to win”? Seems to me that Saturday was a pretty good example of that.
Perhaps many posters were right about the KJ popup being the turning point of the season…just not in the way they meant. Since the Cubs series, 4-3 on the road (not great, but light-years beyond their previous performance), 2-1 at home, 6-4 overall. It’s hard to quibble with .600 ball (yes, yes, I know, missed opportunities, it’s only ten games, yada yada yada. Hey, stuff it, I’m on a roll here LOL).
So bring on the Brewers. Ben Sheets? I spit on Ben Sheets, LOL. Massacre that mofo, I say. Then get him in the offseason. :-)

Tex for prospects - better: for pitching prospects, at least a couple of good ones. Why try to pump life in the 2008 club, especially by adding Figgins? Come on, haven’t we learned anything from the Tex trade: a position player isn’t going to deliver a post-season.
If Reyes continues to develop, and Morton develops, the team has a nice 1-4 in its starting rotation.
Beyond that, it’s time to say “Adios” to Smoltz and Glavine, the latter certain to make it to the Hall; the former likely to do so. Great pitchers in their day, but… Got to let go of these old guys and oft-injured players. Time to move on.
Chipper may merit a short term deal, but given how fragile he is, he needs to be treated like a platoon player, not a regular. Where’s the up and coming 3B talent in the farm system?

Oh boy, Tex finally hit a homer. Well three of them. Im reserving judgement on him still. Its one game and he has stunk it up all year. Frenchy stinks and Chipper is injured again. Its funny how Chipper always gets injured during a rough run.
If this team wants to suceed we need a better bullpen, better players off the bench and a lineup who can get the job done on a daily basis. These guys hit one pitcher then go hitless the next three games. Its always been that way with the braves. Great pitching-no hitting or great hitting-no pitching. Now its ok pitching and no-hitting. One game people just does not do it for me.
And please someone get rid of Pendleton. He takes really good hitters and makes them into Andruw Jones and Jeff Francoeur. Remember poor Adam LaRoche. He had a sweet swing until someone decided he couldnt hit lefties and platooned him with an over the hill player like Franco.
The braves just need to dump high salaries and get some players. Divide the money and quit spending money on over the hill players like Glavine and counting on injuries like Kotsay and Hampton. To much is to much.

Laroche really couldn’t hit lefties. Franco was a blessing that made the team better when partnered with Laroche. Laroche is probably not the example you want to use to say Pendleton stinks since Laroche did eventually turn into a better hitter with Pendleton and has stunk since he left Terry.

Dump high salaries? Who? Smoltz? Damaged goods that no one wants now. Hampton? Refuse that no one wants now. Chipper? No way in hell they trade Hoss. Hudson? Knockahoma, puh-leeze. Tex? Well, maybe but why not try to sign him first? Glavine? No one wants him now because he wouldn’t want anyone else now. Soriano? Damaged goods.
Where’s all this high salary you are dumping? They’re paying peanuts to McCann, Kelly, Escobar, Francoeur, Kotsay, Diaz, Jair, Morton, JoJo, James, Campillo and the rest of the relievers and bench players.
No salary dumping going to happen. Know your ball team before you spout your ignorance.

If you had XMRadio this weekend, you could have listened to Pete et al AND watched it on TV with the sound down. It really helps keep me connected as a Braves fan, and it’s pretty affordable.

LaRoche didn’t do to bad batting against LH’s. Cox didn’t play him enough for him to get experience againt left handers. I think they would have been better off keeping him. Since they traded for Tex, I think they are one game over 500. I’m still for trading Tex because this team just doesn’t have it to get in playoff’s. I think the Phillies and Met’s are going to make a big push for playoff’s. It’s good that Tex is heating up. If they are out of it and decide to trade him, his value will be higher. I don’t think he will be traded because management doesn’t want to admit they made a mistake trading all those prospects.

Stop being ignorant and a whiner for the sake of being so. If you have not been paying attention, it was hot as hell out there. Hudson got overheated in Chicago. When Hudson gets overheated, he loses it fast. When Hudson gets overheated, he gets weakened and is generally not as good in his next start or two. Start paying attention.

Way too early to judge on Salty. Matt Harrison was housecleaning but may end up serviceable as a major leaguer. Beau Jones may end up serviceable. Elvis Andrus has the skills to pay the bills. His numbers are low because he is 19 and in AA, about 4 to 5 years younger than the average player at that level. Neftali Feliz is a strikeout machine.

Baseball is different from any other sport, very different. For instance, in most sports you score points or goals; in baseball you score runs.
In most sports the ball, or object, is put in play by the offensive team; in baseball the defensive team puts the ball in play, and only the defense is allowed to touch the ball.
In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he’s out; sometimes unintentionally, he’s out.
Also: in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and all sports played with a ball, you score with the ball and in baseball the ball prevents you from scoring.
In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager.
And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do.
If you’d ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform, you’d know the reason for this custom.
Now, I’ve mentioned football. Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.
I enjoy comparing baseball and football:
Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.
Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.
Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything’s dying.
In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.
Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who’s up?
In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.
In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.
Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.
Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog…
In baseball, if it rains, we don’t go out to play.
Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.
Baseball has no time limit: we don’t know when it’s gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we’ve got to go to sudden death.
In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there’s kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there’s not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you’re capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.
And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:
In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy’s defensive line.
In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I’ll be safe at home!

ITS OVER,
Maybe Chipper the injury comes BEFORE the rough patch. I am not the biggest Chipper fan, I think he is a tad overated in the clutch, but he is not dogging it. He is raking this year and trying to play through pain more this year.
I agree the pen could be better, but the answer is not more arms, it is to go find at least one innings eating horse SP. That way the pen is not used as much and the apperances are lessened and the opponent doesn’t get to see them as much, and they get rest. The pen has plenty of talent and stuff, it is just overworked.
DOB,
As much as I love Glavine, we could have spent that money better. Smoltz, as long as he is healthy, has incredible value because he still has (had?, I hope he is not done, he is my favorite) plus stuff. He is a freak, Glavine is not.
I have to wonder though, with Jurgens, Morton, and Reyes, the Braves have a foundation for the future. (I am not including Hudson, because I am looking longer in the future than his deal goes). I think the Bravos could get alot for Tex on the market. I also think we can get a bat to take his place if we trade him by making other deals after that.
I don’t want this team to get old like the Celtics after Bird, McKale, and Parrish went past their prime. If they are not going to pay Tex the money, then they HAVE to get something for him, period. I think he is worth the money because he improves two spots in the order because Chipper gets better pitches to hit.
I think the team is better than they have been, maybe the record is not as good, but this team is better than last year. I am unsure whether this team is good enough to win a World Series. A divsion is not enough, we want pennants. The future is getting brighter. Heyward is raking at Rome, meaning unless Frenchy gets his head out of his bottom orephus, he won’t be around in 3 years. The middle of the diamond is strong. KJ has a chance to be a good run producer, Escobar is a prototypical 2 hole hitter. McCann is a rock. If Blanco (or Anderson) develops into a Leadoff hitter and B. Jones holds down LF, and if the Braves spend the money on an ace and the corners, (this is AC, after Chipper) this team will contend for many more years for the big prize. Heck maybe frenchy makes the leap, and Heyward outgrows RF and plays 1st if Tex leaves, even better. For the first time in years, we have hope.

Well, at this point I think it’s safe to say that Frank Wren’s first trade as Braves GM was a pretty damned good one.
Jurrjens is 7-3 with a 3.20 ERA (top-10 in the NL).
Renteria is hitting .266, with 5 homers, 32 RBI, and most surprisingly… only 5 doubles for the season in 256 at-bats.
Ouch.
And don’t forget, we got another solid prospect (G.Hernandez) in that deal as well.

I don’t want this team to get old like the Celtics after Bird, McKale, and Parrish went past their prime.
Huh? Where’s the old team? The problem is the core of the team is too young. They’re young at catcher, first, second, short, center, right, left, on the bench, in the starting rotation and on the bench.
The only old dude left that means anything is Chipper. Kotsay, Hampton and Glavine don’t figure into the future.
The emergence of Jair and JoJo, with the development of Charlie, the surprise that is Jorge, and the reclamation of Chuck James down in AAA are increasingly making Glavine nonessential.
This team is not getting old like the Bird, McHale, and Parrish Celtics. If they fail, it will be because some of the young’uns don’t develop or have something disastrous happen to them akin to Len Bias and Reggie Lewis (on a smaller scale of course).
The best trade the Braves could make is for David Dejesus and Mark Teahen. The Braves need some .330+ OBP, .420+ SLG guys like Dejesus and Teahen. Dejesus would fit in nicely in center and leadoff. Teahen would be a very valuable bench guy in the corner outfield and corner infield.
Send Chuck James and Brent Lillibridge and either Blanco or Anderson to the Royals for Dejesus and Teahen. It would make the Braves better.
The Royals could use the shortstop. Pena is horrible with the bat. Adding Chuck James to the Royals in that big park would set the Royals up nicely in their rotation for the future with Chuck, Meche, Hochevar, Davies, Greinke and Bannister.

KC,
OK, so you are in favor of running Gonzo out there in a save situation with only one outing under his belt. One outing in Texas does not make him a closer. Up 5-2 with 9-1-2 up in Texas is not a true barometer of where he is. I bet BC and McDowell are trying to gauge where he is in his comeback.
BC was trying to get that first home outing out of the way in an 8-0 game because of the wiggle room. Gonzo needs to pitch some innings. I think he only has 14 or so innings on his arm in live games (counting the rehab in AA and AAA). We need to know what he has. It would suck to find out he doesn’t have his arm strength or command back in a game the braves are ahead one run in the ninth. It is better to work out the kinks up 8-0 and give a couple of runs than to give up those runs in a tie game.
I agree with you that BC yanks the pen around too much, but he was right on getting Gonzo some work yesterday.

And to go along with the “they played old songs” note, they played only nine (ten, if you count “Bad Day,” which is really a b-side from “Lifes Rich Pageant”) of their 28 songs from post-Bill Berry albums. It was a helluva show.

DOB,
Good to hear REM stayed away from the bottom of the barrel stuff. Of course, that’s easy for them. The hard decision is what not to play, when your repertoire is as deep as theirs. I saw the Stones in 89 and they were awesome. A friend and I discussed all the great stuff they did play and didn’t play and how much they had to choose from. In the same vein, REM’s been at about 25 years, about the same length of time for the Stones when I first saw them. That’s a long time to build up great material (which both have). And I would raise one in honor of George Carlin, but given the late Mr. Carlin’s preference of that which he raised, I quit doing that years ago. Oddly, I never got the “munchies.” Hmmm.

Stuart: “OK, so you are in favor of running Gonzo out there in a save situation with only one outing under his belt. “
Yes, and so was/is Bobby Cox.
If you want proof of this, I’ll refer you to Saturday night’s game. Gonzo was up in throwing in the 9th inning. Had the score remained tied and gone to a 10th inning, Gonzo (as our closer) was going to be the guy with the ball.
“I bet BC and McDowell are trying to gauge where he is in his comeback. BC was trying to get that first home outing out of the way in an 8-0 game because of the wiggle room… We need to know what he has.”
There were 2 schools of thought here as to how best to handle Gonzo’s comeback. One approach would have been to start out by pitching Gonzo in an 8-0 game to gauge where he is in his comeback… and then ease him back into pressure-packed situations.
The other approach was to “throw him into the fire” (BC’s words, not mine) in a sink-or-swim situation, right off the bat.
Bobby chose the latter approach because Gonzo tends to thrive under pressure. So BC did indeed throw Gonzo at there in the very first save opp that arose after activating Gonzo.
To BC’s credit, I think he made the right decision. But Bobby didn’t suddenly alter his approach and decide “we’d better get a look at him here” in last night’s blowout.
Whether or not you think it’s too early to consider Gonzo the closer… he IS the closer.
BC inserted him immediately into that role, and was prepared to use him in that role again on Saturday, had there been a need.
Again, I happen to think it was a good call on BC’s part to take the approach with Gonzo that he did. I wasn’t so sure beforehand, but I think he made the right call.
That said though, Bobby pitched Gonzo for one reason and one reason only… and that was to let him get some work in, since it had been a few days.
Again, this would have made perfect sense if today were an off-day, or if Gonzo were far enough along in his comeback that pitching back-to-back nights would be no big deal.
But under the circumstances, I don’t think it was a good move to pitch Gonzo last night in a throw away game.

DID YOU KNOW…???
CHIPPER JONES has lost 0.028 points in the last 15 days and LANCE BERKMAN has lost 0.030 points in the last 17 days.
DID YOU KNOW…???
E. VOLQUEZ and J. HAMILTON were part of a trade between Reds and Rangers. VOLQUEZ leads MLB with 1.71 ERA and 110 K´s and he is tied for 2nd in wins in the NL. Meanwhile J. HAMILTON leads MLB with 76 RBI, leads Al with 19 HR and is 7th in BA(AL) with .312.
Is that a win-win trade or what?

Morning All,
On REM, I am glad they did a show based off the new album. Last tour, they played Phillips and it was a greatest hits album. The show was typical of an oldies act. Too many slow songs. I enjoyed the show, but it was nothing like a real REM show. Wish I could have made the show on Saturday nite.
On the Braves,
I guess we are too close to make moves based on improving the team for next year. I hope that FW can make some trades that will not give up the core of the minor league system.
Our main issue (IMO) is a RH bat for the outfield. We continue to play poorly against lefties. I would like a power bat for LF but you can take what you can get.
I think that Hampton will also be the guy that pushes the team in to the playoffs one way or the other.
I think Glavive is done for the year. He will also have to make a decision on surgery, and I think he will retire.
IF Hampton can come back an pitch, he will provide the extra arm the rotation needs to keep the kids from pitching too many innings.
If he can’t come back, then I think the team will have to have Chuckie step up.
There is no way FW can trade for a starting pitcher, a relief pitcher and a RH bat without giving up too much talent for the future.

Lew: “This whole Freel Love Fest is unseemly. Aside from his pitiful stats, lack of power and low OBP”
Absolutely, positively, untrue.
You continue to deliberately ignore the numbers I brought up a week ago, and that DOB brought up in the last blog…
Freel VS. Lefties: .339 avg, .388 OBP, .435 SLG
Oh, and overall… Freel is hitting .298, which was not “pathetic” the last time I checked.
He is a legitimate base-stealing threat, which is something we don’t currently have on this team (aside from Lillibridge, who can’t hit and won’t be here long).
And despite an exaggerated fleer for the dramatic, he is a very good defensive fielder.
As for your Willie Harris comment… You’re distorting the truth, my friend. All I said was “Let him play every day as long as he’s hitting .350. When he cools off… go back to the platoon.”

KC-No, to the contrary, Dude, YOU refuse to see the entire picture with Freel. You’re cherry picking your info again.
In 7 seasons in the bigs, Freel has played more than 103 games twice and only once in the past four years.
He has an OBP of only .340 this year and .308 last year. Wow. Awesome.
He has a total of 22HR and 117 RBI in 7 seasons combined. This year he has 0 HR, 0 triples and 8 doubles. In other words, he has NO POWER. NONE. ZERO. ZIP. NADA. Not even gap power. Need I continue in this vein?
He has played in just 48 games this year, 78 last year and just got off of the DL-Yet Again. Every time I have watched him play, he ends up landing on his head or some other body part and getting up shaken. He is an injury machine that misses considerable time. Why do you think the trend will be broken in Atlanta? Do you have THAT MUCH faith in the Cow Idol?
Why do you seriously think we need another injury prone outfielder (don’t we have enough already?) that hits for zero power and will cost us several mil in salary and players I’d rather not even give up?
Come on Dude. Freel is a why bother? option. What good is he to us when he will play once a week against lefties and be left on base once out of every three at bats because no one else hits LHP? IF he remains healthy (which I don’t think is possible given how he plays-hard but not too smart). The guy is not all you make him out to be.

I agree;not only an extended trip to Richmond, but maybe even trade bait for some starting pitching. leave Brandon Jones and recall Josh Anderson from Richmond;that gives the Braves some speed and youth. The Braves could easily win this division, but they are doing nothing to improve themselves; benching Frechy and maybe dumping him is a great start;one final observation;Chipper needs to be the leader and play, even when it’s painful………..step up!!

100% agree with you KC. What I meant both teams got what they wanted and they are pleased. And that is very rare the situation going on with those 2 guys involved in a trade. But of course for the reds getting Volquez was a steal, meaning its 5 times harder (if not more) to find an ACE than to find a great productive hitter with Hamiltons numbers.

But in this instance, I did have a similar head-scratching moment. Kinda odd, as though Stamper was reading over my shoulder or had access to posts before they go up, the way those of us “inside” the ajc have.
I have no idea how that happened, honestly. I know I hit post, then went in to change something while it was still in the holding pen, so to speak, before it had shown up for viewing. Then other posts went up in the interim, so mine didn’t get up (that’s the way it works; too long an explanation needed to give to you), so I had to re-post it (though you wouldn’t have seen it twice, only someone inside, monitoring it live, should’ve seen that).

My thoughts on the use of the pen yesterday: It is possible that Ohman WANTED to get an inning to work on something after the meltdown on Friday. I would have preferred to see Ring or Carlyle in that spot, but there may be a reason for using Ohman that is not obvious to the uninformed.
I think using Gonzalez in the 9th yesterday was the right move. He needs to get work in big league game situations before he can be counted on to be a dependable closer. He hadn’t pitched in 3 days and with Sheets pitching tonight, there is a better than even chance that the Braves will not be needing a closer today. Gonzalez was not locating his curve very well yesterday, and it did not have the break I think he will have as his rehab progresses. The bottom line is that this period has to be regarded as the major league portion of his rehab process.

Overlord, sorry but I missed it. Frankly, I’ve updated all those things in last coupe days, be it here or in notebook. But to repeat:
Any timetable for Prados comeback?
Answer: He just started taking batting practice last couple days. Will begin a rehab assignment in next few days, probably. No timetable, but I’d guess at least another week or two before he’s activated.
Anything on soriano?
ANSWER: No. Nothing at all. Asked Bobby about it yesterday. No update. Nothing’s changed. Still sore.
What about anthony Lerew?
ANSWER: He wasn’t supposed to begin pitching until June or July, so I’ll check again soon. But they’re not counting on him this season, though perhaps he could be ready if needed by late season.
What about kotsay?
ANSWER: Won’t play on this homestand. No definite timetable, just took full BP last two days for first time in about three weeks. Told me he didn’t know if he’d need a rehab assignment, that’s up to team.

Crazy Stats Katz,
Maybe ‘getting old’ is not the right term, but the Celtics stayed with the old guys too long, they chased the title well after the window closed. (Len Bias’s death killed that team for YEARS.) Then Reggie Lewis died, they had nothing left when the old guys were done. It is hard to build for the future AND win at the same time.
I use the Celtics annalogy because the rotation is 5 guys and the Braves held on to the past too long, by signing Glavine and counting on Hampton again. Then Chuck and Hampton don’t work out, and Smoltz gets hurt (much like Bird’s back or McHale’s feet, age is a booger) you get put in a lurch. That is why I am tired of trading prospects for short term fixes. It is time to quit that and build for the long haul.
BTW, if you think Dayton Moore is going to to take the poo poo platter you offered for those players, then turn on the trade filter on your video game and get real.
When are people on this blog going to realize to make a trade, you have to have two or more sides thinking they are getting value in return.
Chuck James has NO VALUE to anyone. Lillibridge has NO VALUE to anyone. Of course that trade would make the Braves better. It would also make Dayton Moore unemployed.

When bands start doing Greatest Hits Tours -it’s over.
Saw the Rolling Stones on the Steel Wheel (chair) tour waaay back in the day. Greatest Hits, super slick, zero heart. (Granted they were “over” before that).
Much rather see a band playing songs that they are excited about.
If you go see Dylan, he’ll play old stuff, but you might not recognize it b/c he’s liable to totally change up his old songs and make them nearly unrecognizeable. Which, to my mind, is cool.

Any post with the words…Francouer followed by “keeper” is beyond homeristic at this point.
I hope you send that msg to all the other GM’s in the league, to let them know we’ve got a keeper available for them.
Jeff to the Dodgers for Looney, or Jeff to the Giants for any young pitching. Jeff to the Rays…for a dozen bats and balls and a bus ticket to Tampa?
Meanwhile…it took a while for the Mets Trolls to show up, but they did. All it took is the Mets beating up on the helpless Rockies. The Mets maybe the most flawed team in all of baseball, which is why the firing of Randolph made no sense b/c it wasn’t followed by the firing of the “supposed” superGM Omar M. When in fact he is responsible for their bloated payroll of over the hill mercs and selling their farm system. So yes…the Mets aren’t going to be going anywhere in 2008. I don’t care if they have a better record than the Braves by the end of the year, they aren’t going to be beating the Phillies for the NL East. NY METS…redheaded stepchild of NY baseball, little man syndrome, and owned by the Braves in head to head matchups.
I can’t wait to hear Buck and Kincade sing “beat the Mets” several times this week. The Mets are the irrelevant team in the division. It’s all about the Phils, Marlins and Braves! It’s a dream come true!

Lew: I’m failing to look at the whole picture?
I will say again… I favor picking up Freel to platoon with Blanco. Not as an the new cornerstone or our franchise, or even as an everyday player.
Ever been referred to a specialized physician? Would you refuse to go to an ear-nose-throat doctor because he’s not skilled in treating lower back problems?
When you hire a player to fill a very specific role, you look at how well he performs THAT role.
I want Freel to hit against lefties, play well defensively when he’s out there, and be available to pinch run when he’s not starting.
How well Freel does or does not hit righties is of very little concern to me because that would be Blaco/Kotsay’s job.
Blanco hits .159 against lefties.
Freel hits .339 against them.
Freel can help this offense to be less vulnerable to left-handed pitching. He can field well, and add more speed to this team.
It’s that simple.

DOB,
Truly you are right— no one is running away with this division. I would also agree that the Braves’ biggest need remains getting another outfielder. As I think about what it would take to get one (such as Jason Bay) the only trade bait that would be attractive is either Reyes or Morton. Would they consider something like this, particularly if either Glavine or Hampton prove to be healthy in late July? Oddly enough, they seem to have enough starting pitching both now and for next year.
Thoughts?

agree the pen could be better, but the answer is not more arms, it is to go find at least one innings eating horse SP. That way the pen is not used as much and the apperances are lessened and the opponent doesn’t get to see them as much, and they get rest. The pen has plenty of talent and stuff, it is just overworked.
Stuart I disagree. The reason the pen is overworked is because they’re all inexperienced. Even when the starters are going 7, Cox still runs 3-4 relievers out there. He’s trying to put them in situations where they’ll succeed because they are inexperienced and none of them have shown signs that they can pitch in roles.
The bullpen needs an experienced reliever. They need a Carlos Marmol or Heath Bell type. Marmol’s not going anywhere, Bell maybe if SD is clearly out of it later this season.
The braves may already have that. They may eventually have a healthy Soriano. Jorge Julio pitched well before he was released with KC and has pitched decent in 3.2 innings with Richmond. With a healthy Gonzales, those 3 pitchers can hold the fort when effective.
I agree that the success of Morton, Jo Jo, Campillo, Hudson, & Jair may not last & may be a little inconsistent as the season wears on, but the main problem in the pitching staff right now is the bullpen.
I think Hampton will be back and solidify the rotation, but in any event, the team will know where they stand in mid-July regarding Hampton, Julio, Soriano, and Gonzales, and will know for sure what they’ll need in terms of SP or RP.

KC:
3B Chipper Jones continues to take treatment every minute he can for his right quad, which has a small tear in it. He can pinch hit, but he can barely jog and can’t move laterally.

Overlord-D-Day:
Thanks for informing me about the separation between the big leagues and AAA. I forgot all about that until you mentioned it.
Look, if and when Chuck James ever rejoins the Braves rotation, I’ll feel as uneasy as anyone. The images of his throwing in-game batting practice late last year and in his handfull of starts this season are still fresh in my mind.
And I don’t favor James over anyone currently in Atlanta’s rotation.
But I think it’s only fair to say we shouldn’t forget that before his shoulder started giving him problems late last year, he was working on a roughly 40 start stretch in which he went - I think it was - 18-11 with an ERA around 3.70 for the Braves.
And as I’ve mentioned previously, heading into his last start in July of 07’(2/3 of the way through the season) he was in the top-15 in the league in ERA.
James has ALWAYS struggled with homeruns. But when he’s at his best, you typically see him giving up a solo shot here and there, and he pitches effectively in spite of it.
Maybe he’ll never be effective at the big league level again. Hell, I don’t know.
I just thought it was worth mentioning that, despite his flaws, he was one of the more effective starters in the league from the half-way point of 2006, until about 2/3 of the way through last season.
That fact, coupled with his dominance at AAA, leads me to believe that maybe some of us have been to quick to write his big league eulogy.

KC,
Gonzo has thrown on back to back days in the minors. He had to show he was capable of doing that. It was a condition that had to be met in order to be considered healthy for his return. Since he struggled some and threw 27 pitches yesterday, he might not be available today, it is part of the process, stuff happens.
I know he is the closer, I have said as much on here. I knew in my gut that he walked into the role, and it is a good thing. He is a good closer, but he has 1 major league inning on his new elbow. He needs to pitch in some games, save or non-save. Even the great ones like Wagner and Hoffman, and Rivera pitch some in non-save situations. It is not something BC should be making a habit of, but I cannont find fault in the decision YESTERDAYH. If he starts yanking Gonzo around like he does Boyer, then I will have issue. Had Gonzo gone 1-2-3 with a K, we would not be having this discussion.
It was the fourth day since the Texas inning. He needs the work. He only has about 15 innings total on his new elbow. I cannont make that point enough.
When is Gonzo going to get that work? Are we going to cherry pick and use him on days before off days, or in just save situations. Then we can only use him 10-15 times for the rest of the year because we only get a few off days the rest of the year. Also, the braves seem (eyeball test) to not have as many classic ninth inning save situations as most teams. Hopefully that changes with Gonzo in there and everyone’s role is more defined.
The Mariners top prospect touched him up for a bomb, stuff happens. The original point of my first post that got all this going was that I think Gonzo is going to be fine. I was trying to be upbeat for once.

Lew: You keeping bringing up the “no power” thing. Seems to be a pretty big deal to you. but that flies directly in the face of your Ichiro suggestion.
Power is not an overly important stat on the resume of a leadoff type hitter. HEY… if Hanley Ramirez is available, GREAT! Otherwise, we might have to settle for a guy with some speed that prefers to hit the ball on the ground or on a line.
And if you have a better suggestion than Freel for the price tag (in terms of talent we’d have to give up)… let’s hear it.

Bobby’s
The bravos have only been getting innings recently. Of course a health bell would help, but the issue still lies in the fact we have 4 rookies in the rotation. Before that Glavine and Smoltz were only going 5-6 innings. The bravos rank toward the bottom in innings pitched from the rotation. Bobby does yank the pen around, but sometimes he has to.

About TEX matching Chippers 2 curtain calls in so little time….. I think the thing is that chipper is so spectacular, that everything he does (even if he hits 3 HRs), fans are already expecting it, there not muc emotions. He has to do things like hitting 500HR or hit .400 to get that curtain call.

KC- did you just use the words “Freel” and “play well defensively” in the same sentence? You ever seen this guy ply the outfield?

My cousins used to hang out with the guys who formed New Kids on the Block, before they became NKOTB, back on the streets of the Dorchester area of Boston. Even got a picture of one of them eating cereal in my uncle and aunt’s kitchen as a 10-year-old.

DOB - if you’re taking requests, I’d love to get an update on the walking wounded Braves: Diaz, Hampton, Glavine, Smolty, etc. and even Esco and Chipper & the others with minor injuries.

Stuart: “Had Gonzo gone 1-2-3 with a K, we would not be having this discussion.”
Nothing could be further from the truth. It is VERY common for a closer to get hit hard when he’s brought into a meaningless game. It’s weird, but it happens all the time.
I read absolutely NOTHING into Gonzo’s performance yesterday, and it doesn’t concern me in the slightest.
I also understand that Gonzo hadn’t pitched in several days, and there are times when you just need to get your closer some work.
But with Ben Sheets on the mound today, yesterday wasn’t the time to get him that work. If JoJo pitches well, and we can scratch out 2 or 3 runs off Sheets… we’ll need Gonzo tonight. But after getting some working in last night, I’m not sure he’ll be available.
That’s my problem with BC’s decision to work him yesterday.

Jeff to the Dodgers for Looney… Supes
Not the 1st time I saw this. Do you think the Dodgers would want to acquire another one of our free swinging, high K/BB outfielders who struggle in the clutch?
I’d think they be more cautious next time around, and I don’t think they’d downgrade with Francoeur over Loney. Loney’s got a nice bat. Frenchy?

KC-Dude, are you sick? Are you experiencing flu like symptoms? Do I need to suggest (a la Nathan) that you take some serious anti Psychotic medication?
Did I just see you post a comparison of Ryan F@@king Freel to Ichiro Suzuki? DUDE!!!!!
The only vague means of comparison to a 1500+ hit player with a career OBP of over .375 and a career BA of .331 to Freel, the Oft Injured and anemic, is that neither is a Home Run hitter. With that comparison,(whose inanity exceeds even your love fest with Willie Harris last year), you have lost all credibility.

The Braves will have some roster decisions to make when Prado gets back. You’d expect Littlefellow (Lillibridge) to head back to Richmond. B. Jones likely will get sent back too once Kotsay is healthy. With Prado, they could have some greater flexibility on the bench. That gives you Infante, who can play several positions, Prado and Gotay, plus Norton. Not bad. Not 96 Yankees, but not bad, either. It’s been worse. A lot worse.

KC,
I see where you are coming from. I just don’t see the issue in pitching yesterday vs. today.
BTW, the brewers usually decimate LHP, so maybe that had something to do with Gonzo going yesterday.
Bottom line, I think we both agree Gonzo is going to be fine, BC does yank the pen around some. We differ on yesterday.

KC, I am pretty sure, if the game is on the line tonight in the ninth inning, you will see Gonzo come in to close it out. He’ll be rockin’ and a rollin’!

I am tired of everyone in this blog looking for Chuck James to come back and be productive. He is a AAAA pitcher that dominates in AAA but falters in the Majors. the problem is the fact that he throws on two great pitches and until he develops and masters a third he will never be a successful starter. The only option the Braves have with him at the moment is a reliever. He would make a great long man. Someone that faces a order once. He just don’t have the pitches to keep batters off balanced. Grant it he is a good lefty but until he gets a third pitch he is usless to our rotation.

Crazy Stats Katz: “Random is the leader of the gotcha brigade!”
No, no — cha is just one of the many things I ain’t got none of ‘em.
(“I got plenty of nothin’, and nothin’s plenty for me.”)
By “intriguing”, I meant simply head-scratchingly odd, in a kind of odd, head-scratching sort of way.
Et tu, DOB? You wound me.
(But do freel fee — no, not Freel; you wanna get Lew started up again? — feel free to henceforth refer to me as “The Brigadier”.)

B. Jones likely will get sent back too once Kotsay is healthy.
I’m not so sure, anymore. If the Braves are content to go with Infante as the primary backup to CF, then having Jones’ power potential might make more sense than having Blanco stay up. Assuming that Diaz is going to take one OF spot when he returns, that Bobby won’t carry 5 OF, and that Jones doesn’t find one of those 5-for-34 Jay Bruce tailoffs.
It wouldn’t kill me to see Gotay’s spot taken by Prado, either, though Martin isn’t the monster upgrade there that some here think. But I’ve had a little trouble getting on that Gotay bandwagon, myself.

NEW BLOG POSTED
13 Braves have hit three homers in a game since the team moved to Atlanta. Tex is first to do it at Turner Field (four opponents have)
One more time: Horner hit four in a game.

Does anyone remember when the Braves hired a psychiatrist for John Smoltz? Seems like it was Dr. Jack Lewellyn(?). Smoltz couldn’t handle pitching in the majors. His mechanics were fine, but his head needed help. I’d say, by the results, it worked!
How about Frenchy. He’s strong, he seems to have talent, we know he CAN hit. It’s MENTAL! Get Frenchy a shrink!
He needs to get over this funk and it’s all in his head. He feels as if he MUST hit homeruns on every at-bat. AND they must be to left field. A shrink could help. DOB’s column about his numbers speak volumes…. He’s the weak link this year and until he comes around, it’s gonna be tough to win consistently. Pitchers are pitching around others to get to Frenchy - thus his numbers with runners on.
GET HIM HELP BRAVOS MANAGEMENT!

Why is Bobby Cox still coaching????Are we to settle for 3rd place every year now, like we were settling for the playoffs a couple of years ago. I think it is time to make that change. Bobby has taken us as far as he can.
