Dawgs here, brought football weather
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. _ Greetings on a chilly, windy morning at Dark Star, where the weather can’t dampen the mood on the first gameday of spring training.
The UGA ‘Dawgs are in town, and the Braves are deploying most of their regular lineup, at least for the first few innings.
That includes Mark Kotsay in center field, batting sixth behind Jeff Francoeur and ahead of designated hitter Joe Borchard.
All other projected starters are in except catcher Brian McCann (former ‘Dawgs catcher Clint Sammons is getting a bone tossed his way, so to speak), and left fielder Matt Diaz, whose wife had a baby yesterday.
Bobby Cox hasn’t said yet whether Diaz and Brandon Jones will platoon, but there are indications that Diaz could get the majority of playing time in left, at least early. Diaz will make the trip to Vero Beach to face the Dodgers in the Grapefruit League opener Thursday.
(The starting outfielders except Kotsay will make that trip; don’t expect to see him on long bus rides, and if you’ve ever had a bad back you’ll understand. None of the starting infielders will be on that trip, by the way.)
Anyway, back to today. Yes, it’s chilly (upper 50s, very windy). And yes, the field’s still a little damp. And so you might be thinking with this weather, and Kotsay’s back .
Because, admit it: Many of you are going to be watching closely every time Kotsay swings and misses, or dives for a ball in the outfield, or tries to break up a double play. Not today, because the game’s not on the tube, but you know what I mean.
You’re going to be watching in the early season, at least, to see if he winces or leans over and grabs his back. To see if he shows the first sign of a recurrence of back problems.
I know I am.
But after talking to Kotsay for a while this morning in the clubhouse, it really does sound like he feels the best he’s felt since 2004, and that he believes he can play 140-150 games and prove skeptics wrong.
There’s a small scar at his lower back from the arthroscopic surgery he had 11 months ago, a reminder of the painful bulging disk that undermined his performance for the past two seasons and part of 2005, since the first in a couple of violent collisions with walls.
But Kotsay, who I’ve known since the Marlins drafted him out of Cal State Fullerton in 1996, told me he really feels good, finally. Surgery repaired the disk, and he’s maintaining a regimen of core-strengthening exercises and stretching designed to keep everything strong in his lower back.
We haven’t played a Grapefruit League game yet, and a lot can happen between now and March 30 at Washington, D.C. None of us are naïve enough to believe that Kotsay is in the clear and doesn’t have anything to worry about.
But so far, it’s been very encouraging.
Here’s a telltale sign of how good he feels: “I don’t have to come into the training room every morning to get treatment.”
When his surgically repaired back feels so good that daily workouts don’t require a trip to the training table to get things started, it’s usually a great indicator.
He’s 32 and almost certainly here for only one year, taking the baton from Andruw Jones and handing off to Jordan Schafer. But Kotsay wants to make sure his leg of this center-field relay is a stellar one, for the Braves, who showed a lot of faith in him, and for himself, to restore his value heading into free agency.
“There were a few other options out there, and they chose me - that makes me feel good,” Kotsay said of the Braves, who acquired him in a trade from Oakland that sent reliever Joey Devine and another pitching prosect to the A’s, who agreed to pay all but $2 million of Kotsay’s $7.35 million salary this season.
“They [Braves] were confident about my health,” said Kotsay, who told the Braves he had no problems during his winter workout regimen that included lifting weights, running and hitting.
He’s reported to camp early with the pitchers and catchers and has taken batting practice every day. He did baserunning drills without incident Thursday, and has been taking “good, hard routes” while shagging balls the past few days in the outfield.
“I’m not gonna say I feel like I did in ’04 yet, when I played [148] games,” Kotsay said. “But I definitely feel like I did prior to that season. I’d like to play 150 games.”
Kotsay’s last full, healthy season was 2004 with Oakland, when he had career highs in average (.314), doubles (37), home runs (15, which he matched in 2005), on-base percentage (.370) and slugging percentage (.459).
Since then he’s played 139 games (2005), 129 games (’06) and 56 games (’07). Last season he started and finished the season on the DL, rushing his return from surgery at midseason in hopes of helping the A’s make a playoff run. He didn’t (.214 with one homer in 206 at-bats) and they didn’t.
Now he’s got a fresh start and a healthy back (knock on wood).
He knows we’re going to be watching closely, at least for a while.
“They [fans] are going to be that way all the through the season,” he said, and he understands why that’s the case. But he doesn’t think Braves officials have those doubts.
“They brought me here to fill a role,” he said. “To play up to my capabilities defensively, and just be consistent day in and day out.”
He believes he’s going to do that. But he knows only time will tell.
The lineup: Teams are using the DH for today’s exhibition game, and here’s the Braves’ lineup — 1. Kelly Johnson, 2B; 2. Yunel Escobar, SS; 3. Chipper Jones, 3B; 4. Mark Teixeira, 1B; 5. Jeff Francoeur, RF; 6. Mark Kotsay, CF; 7. Joe Borchard, DH; 8. Brandon Jones, LF; 9. Clint Sammons, C.
And yes, UGA will use wood bats, as always. Braves do the college team (UGA or Tech) a favor of scheduling them each year, and that’s part of the deal. Braves provide the wooden bats, by the way.
Move the benches: Loved seeing giant-killer Vanderbilt pull off another upset of a No. 1-ranked opponent last night, the fourth straight time they’ve beaten a top-ranked team at home. However, I still say their arena setup shouldn’t be allowed, with the benches at the ends of the court. It cost Tennessee last night when Bruce Pearl couldn’t communicate with his players at the other end of the court and let them know not to foul as the shot clock was running down on Vandy. (Had to get that in there for Buster, a Vandy grad.)
”ABSOLUTELY SWEET MARIE” by Bob Dylan
Well, your railroad gate, you know I just can’t jump it
Sometimes it gets so hard, you see
I’m just sitting here beating on my trumpet
With all these promises you left for me
But where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, I waited for you when I was half sick
Yes, I waited for you when you hated me
Well, I waited for you inside of the frozen traffic
When you knew I had some other place to be
Now, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, anybody can be just like me, obviously
But then, now again, not too many can be like you, fortunately.
Well, six white horses that you did promise
Were fin’lly delivered down to the penitentiary
But to live outside the law, you must be honest
I know you always say that you agree
But where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Well, I don’t know how it happened
But the river-boat captain, he knows my fate
But ev’rybody else, even yourself
They’re just gonna have to wait.
Well, I got the fever down in my pockets
The Persian drunkard, he follows me
Yes, I can take him to your house but I can’t unlock it
You see, you forgot to leave me with the key
Oh, where are you tonight, sweet Marie?
Now, I been in jail when all my mail showed
That a man can’t give his address out to bad company
And now I stand here lookin’ at your yellow railroad
In the ruins of your balcony
Wond’ring where you are tonight, sweet Marie.

Did you guys see that LaRussa’s gonna keep having his pitchers bat 8th so he can have an extra leadoff style batter hitting 9th? Best quote from the story is how the only negative to the players involved is the ribbing they take as a result:
“Some of the (Braves) got on me, (Brian) McCann and some of the other guys,” Ryan said. “You’re going to hear that. Hitting after the pitcher you know it comes with the territory. I didn’t really care.”

I’ve got high hopes for Kotsay. I think he’ll be fine out there. And I think, if he hits in front of Chipper and Tex, he’ll put up some Renteria ‘06-‘07 type numbers.
DOB: Read that article on Mullett. Gotta say that improved my impression of the man. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a 12-6 curve followed by a 98mph fastball from a Brave. If he has the control and can maintain it, he could be quite an asset. Richmond should have one helluva team this season.

Here’e a rather lengthy interview Mayhem in the AM did with Chipper and Frenchy
They actually discuss DOB’s blog from the other day talking about the lose an Andruw, gain an Andruw.
I still can’t figure out why the NCAA doesn’t go to wooden bats.
because there are alot of NCAA teams. college baseball is a very underfunded sport since it is not a money generating sport. the top programs can afford it and will get sponsors to get them good bats. the smaller schools will have inferior wood bats and not enough bats if they are able to secure bats at all.
wood bats in college baseball would mean less teams and less students able to play.

wooo, the italics make everything look blurry…
DOB and others ive never had a bad back…im only 23, but if its healthy, why would it be an issue for him to ride on the bus?
if ya’ll could explain that to me, it’d be great, cause it seems like either it feels better or it doesnt, and riding on a bus should hurt the guy. how could swinging a bat or running and stretching for fly balls not hurt the back but sitting on a bus would?

Mr. O’Brien,
Do you believe that the competition between B. Jones and Anderson for the fourth outfeild position is a truly open competition, or will Anderson really have to blow people away in order to take the spot from Jones?
As it seems to me, Jones definitely has far better long-term potential, but Anderson’s ability to play CF, and the desire to give Jones more regular playing time (in AAA), might make Anderson a better short-term option for us this year.
I’d love to learn what you, any anyone else, might think.

Rhett, UGA (and Tech) use wood bats vs. Braves. No way Braves are going to expose million-dollar players and prospects to the absurdly hard liners that come off aluminum bats, especially with a pitcher throwing 95 mph at said bats.
That, plus fact that Braves are doing colleges a favor by scheduling this game for them, and it does Braves no good to have developing pitchers throw an inch off the plate or in on a hitter’s hands, only to see him turn it into a 340-foot opposite-field homers because he’s using an aluminum bat.
Two vastly different games that colleges and pros play, because of one thing: aluminum.

braveheart, that may have once been true, but its not true today. When I was at south carolina I usually ate lunch at the same little burger place as Coach Tanner (it was the purple cow, no longer in business). I asked hima bout this and he said that these days, with bat techonology the way it is, you’ll change your bat 3-4 times during a season at least, because they simply get worn out and aren’t as powerful as they were to begin with. And you also have BP bats because you don’t want to risk prematurely aging your game bat by hitting a bunch of BP balls. He said he doesn’t really think it saves much, if any money. That an individual wooden bat is cheaper and that you really don’t break all that many over the course of a season.
The ping brings excitement to the game, at the detriment of preparing players for MLB and at the detriment off young pitchers health and psyche. Most college players aren’t good enough to hit a lot of homeruns and nobody wants to see poorly played 3-2 games every night.

Someone clarified my point for me at the tail-end of the last blog—it seems to be in MLB’s best interest to sponsor the switch to wooden bats at the college level, thus shortening the minor-league learning curve for hitters drafted out of college. High School draftees are younger and therefore have more time available for figuring things out in the minors.

It seems that some of the higher profile teams might get serious preferential treatment in that scenario. At first glance, that seems reasonable, but to think that there are 30 MLB organizations, and hundreds, if not thousands of college programs (I have no idea), there is no way MLB can fund all of them, and then you have a situation where the good teams get EVEN MORE of an advantage in funding than the already have. That would not promote a competive system. And seiously, how many MLB prospects, on average, are on a given college teams roster (I don’t really know that either)?

let’s see
the shot clock had ticked down to about 10 seconds, and the UT player came up and fouled the guy from behind
any smart ball player knows that you either foul, or you don’t. If you’re going to foul, the ONLY thing to wait for is
A) a poor free throw shooter to get the ball/a top free throw shooter to pass the ball; and or, B) to see if you can cause a backcourt turnover first (as this only burns 10 seconds).
Coaches run through this stuff time and time again.
Yes, the benches make it harder to communicate, but Kevin Stallings has the same disadvantage every game.
Perhaps he gets his team prepared.
Lastly, IMO, that was one of those “ref anticipation” fouls, anyway. UT appeared to be willing to let the clock run down, and the ref “anticipating” more contact, rung up the foul after UT had played good defense for 25 seconds.
This is one of only the many number of ways that referees have damaged the game of basketball:
A team plays good defense, only to be punished by a ref with a quick whistle.

masivatack: See FJR’s 12:35 post for some clarification of the issue. From looking on a few online sporting goods sites, wooden bats run $30-100, aluminum $60-400.
If MLB provided only token funding for wooden bats, say, $30 million ($1 million per franchise), that would pay for about 650,000 wooden bats at about $40-50 each.
This wouldn’t be just money thrown out the window, either. It would pay off in the form of more accurate scouting and a shortened minor-league learning curve. It could also give a better idea about pitchers because scouts might miss a pitcher whose style is not particularly suited to going up against aluminum bats.

Dave: I’ve finally found something to disagree with you about. As a Vandy alum, Memorial gym is one of the best atmospheres in all of college sports. Oldest gym in the SEC, by the way. The lack of benches and press on the sidelines makes for a great viewing experience (the floor is raised to eye level for the first few rows). As for your unfairness claim, last I checked both teams have to deal with it. LSU’s old coach, Dale Brown, hated that place with a passion and always complained. Does it give the Dores an advantage? Absolutely, but that is part of the beauty of your home court. I can tell you there is no better site than seeing Bruce Pearl getting T’d up cause he can’t stay in touch with his team on the other end of the court. I think your boy, Buster, would agree.

I was just looking at that BA list. What stood out the most was the big fat zero in the White Sox column. Maybe these prospects won’t amount to much in time, but you’d hope your team at least had 1. Sheeeesh.
The Braves 5 prospects average age was 21 which is the youngest group out of the teams with five prospects.
Interestingly, it looks like only Elvis and Neftali from the Teixeira deal rank in the top 100. Neftali (#93) is 19 years old and has the ability to hit 99mph. He also is described as “raw”. Is that code for “no command”?

Just got back from clubhouse. Chipper said he should be SEC Player of the Week. “I’m batting 1.000, slugging over 1.000,” he said.
Later he added, “I wonder what my numbers in this [college exhibition] game have been over the years. They’ve got to be pretty good. Can we take those to arbitration.”

* Luther* you need to chill out man! It’s only the first game of the EXHIBITION season against a college team. Jeez, sounds like your looking for a reason to jump on Bobby.
DAP I didn’t see where anyone answered your question about a bad back and a bus ride. I have dealt with back issues so I’ll take the liberty to help. When you are playing in a game, you work up a sweat, your body gets heated up and helps the muscles, nerves, discs, etc. stay limber and flexible. However, when you sit on a bus seat, (they don’t always travel on luxery liners) the seats are VERY firm and ridgid. Your sitting there for an extended time with little or no movement and with the bounce of the road, it does not have a very smoothe ride. You are in a seated position with all the pressure going to the lower part of your spine. It makes you stiff and sore. Then you’ve got to work out those kinks. If you go from that position to trying to play a game it’s tough on you. After the game you are sore and exercised, only to get on this bus for an extended ride and your body settles into this poistion, and it once again irratates this lower region of your back. Hope that helps!

Saw where the Mets couldn’t beat the college team. Impressive. Came out with a tie after whining to an ump:
The Mets were staring at a loss to the Wolverines - ranked No. 8 by Baseball America - until minor-league infielder Michel Abreu blasted a two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
The game was called after nine because the Mets were out of pitchers. They were lucky to come away with a tie because Abreu’s shot to right-center was initially ruled a double until third-based coach Sandy Alomar angrily protested.
But it looks like Delgado picked up right where he left off: Carlos Delgado struck out on three pitches in his only at-bat.

I also think MLB should fund wooden bats in college.
I have a great idea though:
MLB should sponsor the planting of hickory and white ash on college campuses. Then the college’s lumber and woodworking schools can manufacture the bats for their respective teams. that’s a stretch.

What a bunch of freaking crybabies the Mets are. Here are some notes from the Daily News:
“I was impressed with [Michigan], although they were talking a little trash,” Randolph said, laughing. “It [ticked] me off a little bit.”
Billy Wagner was furious when Michigan center fielder Kevin Cislo tried to lay down a bunt during Wagner’s one inning of work.
The Wolverines were lucky the bunt went foul, because Wagner said he might have drilled someone if it had not.
“It’s hot and I’m just trying to work on some pitches,” Wagner fumed afterward. “Go do that against Villanova!”
Someone needs to shut Billy Wagner up already! Is there a bigger prima donna loudmouth in baseball besides Gary Sheffield? I can’t stand the puss.

Why does it takes pitchers so long to reach the majors? It seems that by the time they make it up they are no longer in the best physical condition of their lives. Maybe better command. The piece, I know what you are saying but I see a lot of pitchers that have nasty stuff in the minors. 100MPH fastball, great curve, solid era, striking out hitters at 18-24 years old. They finally get to the majors at 27 and they can only get it up there at 92 or so. Not that 92 is slow but you hardly see any pitcher in the majors that breaks in at younger than say 24. There has to be some that are ready to go at 20, 21.

Bobby had some strong words for UGA closer Josh Fields, or rather for him not signing with Braves after they drafted him in the second round (Boras is his agent; ‘nuff said)
“Why didn’t he sign,” Cox said. “He’s a senior.”
(great college players usually come out after their junior year, or go the JUCO route and come out sooner)
Cox loves his talent: “He only throws 97 [mph] with a good breaking ball,” he said sarcastically, meaning, the kid has a ton of talent.
And then this zinger: “It comes down, sometimes, to you want to play or you don’t want to play.
“It’s too bad.”
Ouch.

Timthebrave,
How many 18 year olds throw 100 mph? I think if you looked at real numbers you’d see that there are only a handful of guys in the minors that have ever actually reached that kind of velocity. Big league hitters will lay off of pitches that aren’t in the strike zone. If a pitcher was ACTUALLY throwing that fast with the kind of control you are indicating, he would ascend through the minors very quickly. The fact that you don’t see lots of young (21 year old) pitchers with high 90’s fastballs in the majors suggests that they don’t actually have the control that you think they do.
Secondly, a pitcher that throws a 99 ph fastball probably doesn’t lose 9 mph on his fastball in 6 years if he’s actually staying in shape or isn’t injured.

I’m almost always a reliable backer of Bobby Cox, but I really found his comments to be a little out of line. By timthebrave

The Piece, I know that there are not a lot of guys that throw 99+. I just think that for a pitcher to make it to the majors as a starting pitcher it takes longer than most players and he has to prove it for longer. If a centerfielder shows potential he can make the majors at 18. If I guy is throwing high 90’s at 21 why not bring them up. What is the percentage of starters that started in the majors at under 24? I don’t know the answer but it is a lot lower than the percentage of any other position. I just think there is a taboo for having real young starting pitchers. It seems managers(Bobby Cox) will take the older pitcher over a younger pitcher even if the younger pitcher shows better stuff and command

Practically impossible for rabid baseball fans deprived of a single box score for, lo, these many months. Can’t be done by mere humans. Sorry.
This hyper-jacked-up, wide-eyed look of baseball fans resembling the family from The Hills Have Eyes only lasts for a week or so, luckily. The system then adjusts to once again having a steady diet of BA, OBP, and ERA, and we revert to our usual countenance of merely resembling a crazed winner on Deal Or No Deal.

If you are too good to field a bunt in spring training, you will not be good enough to field a bunt in October Billy boy. Hey DOB, who comes up with the poll questions, The Riddler?
Once again, they have offered us a trick question, that doesn’t cover “all the bases”, for possible answers.
Today, we are asked how much money is TOO MUCH money per year to give Tex. With the choices of:
a) 15 million per year.
b) 18 million per year.
c) 20 million per year.
d) Sign him for WHATEVER it takes.
I don’t think EITHER of the first 3 (ahem) choices are “too much” for what he is going to command, and with the Braves players that will seemingly be going away before too long, 20 million a year for Tex, might not be a bad investment.
THAT being said, I surely wouldn’t answer to give him “whatever it takes”, to sign him. Which could, conceivingly be upwards of 30 million, if a few of the BIG markets get in a bidding war, with Boras pulling the puppet strings.
So you tell me, how I should answer that question, besides doing what I did…….. I didn’t answer it at all.

Braveheart , thanks for the link to the Chipper/Francoeur interview.
I like the way Chipper put things into perspective with his being a rookie and having the opportunity to play around three future hall of Famers in Maddux , Smoltz and Glavine.
His mentioning the chatter between the Phillies and Mets over their um…. RIVALRY. Chipper then puts them in their place with the fourteen straight comment.
The whole Larry , Larry , Larry thing with the Mets fans. It’s all about respect.
Lose an Andruw , gain and Andruw…….Priceless !

Not even ARod got 30 million/year straight up and his performance incentives involved breaking Homerun standards that only he is anywhere close to approaching. With the state of the economy heading rapidly into recession, it is not clear that next year’s average contracts will continue to rise. If Tex is offered 22-24 million to play in NY, Boston, or LA, wouldn’t that be comparable to 20 million in Atlanta? The cost of living and taxes are much higher in these markets.

I have to admit, I’m a bit conflicted over the outcome of today’s game. My Georgia Bulldogs versus my Atlanta Braves… Well, regardless of the matchup, let us all celebrate and be merry that spring training is officially underway! Only two more days before I’m able to witness it with my own eyes (in HD no less).
I watched Jim Rome is Burning today. Initially I was overly excited because I thought the name literally described the show, but alas, it was merely a clever pun. After the disappointment wore off, I noticed that the guy who sort’ve looks like Bob Costas and Casey Kasem’s b******* child in the forum (yet another cleverly disguised pun) compared Roger Clemens to Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men. All without any kind of credit given to this blog or whoever it was that made that genius post (scoots, colorado??). I’m not calling Jim Rome a lying, stealing, poor excuse for a dirtbag, I’m just saying that if anyone needs me to testify to finally (truly) burn this guy, I’m available (see how I said rome and burn in the same sentence there? maybe I could write for ESPN)…

AP - ATLANTA Recent drought conditions affecting most of the Southeast corridor of the United States has has had devastating effects on Pine Tree mills and the production of grade lumber. One byproduct of Pine is Pine Tar, a sticky substance used by many Major League Baseball players to enhance the grip of the baseball bat. The black sticky substance is at a critical “all time low” according to Commissioner Bud Selig. Discussions were underway regarding pushing back the start of the 2008 MLB Season in order to bring pine tar up to “acceptable inventories” and give the mills a chance to bring the production back on line. An unprecedented opening day delay of April 20 was being floated by several team owners in order to give the players the necessary pine tar supplies that they require. Enter Foxsports.com baseball writer Ken Rosenthal. In an act of generosity rarely seen anymore in today’s “Me me me” sports climate, Rosenthal has signed exclusive rights with MLB to use his rectum and sphincter to provide the “necessary deposits” for the first 12 inches of the players baseball bats. Commissioner Selig said we really owe the entire season to Mr. Rosenthal, this will not go unnoticed. When reached for comment, Rosenthal said he was glad to make the sacrifice for America’s pastime. Rosenthal will be reporting to Spring Training on Friday and has already met with representatives from Louisville Slugger to be fitted.

Red Hot Chili Peppers were great then too. I don’t care much for their newer stuff, but back in ‘85, ‘86 they were great! I saw them three times in Athens, each time in a small club. The best shows I saw when I was in college: Psychedelic Furs and Los Lobos on Legion Field, Hunters and Collectors at the Uptown Lounge, Red Hot Chilli Peppers (several locations), Jason and the Scorchers (several locations), Living Colour (Uptown Lounge—my husband’s (then my boyfriend) band opened for them. Today was the last day of Spring Training for me. It’s back to the Glacier in another day or so.
Today was fun. My son caught the first foul ball of the season in the top of the first.
Morton was impressive-not so much that he was unhittable, but because he never threw two balls the same speed in a row. He threw a high of 94 and had a change or off speed pitch that clocked in at 74. Anyone who can hit the mid 90’s and follow it up with a pitch 20 MPH slower-or anything in between-will always be tough to hit.I would like to see him throw a bit more heat, but he likely was working more on the off speed stuff today.
One last thing-Josh Anderson is fast-very fast. Not only did he beat out an infield hit, but on a play to Thorman at first, which he threw away trying to get a force at second, I looked up and there was Anderson, the right fielder, backing up the play at first. The ball never left the infield. I think Anderson may surprise a lot of Braves’ fans with his speed and hustle. I think this kid is ready to go in the bigs.

Brian, regarding the Braves being able to sign Josh Fields. The rules changed this year. All draftees from the 07 draft had to be signed by August 15 (I believe this is the date).
Also, there is no more “draft and follow” any longer. But Fields wouldn’t have been eligible for that anyway because he attends a four year school, not a junior college.

La Jolla Dawg, just got up to your other post. Psych Furs were very cool back in the day, and put on a great show. Evening ladies and gents…
Memphis giveth, Vandy taketh away. It was fun while it lasted gang, even if it could only be measured in hours.
Solid outings by the prospect pool on the mound today. Charlie Morton’s metamorphosis into a starter continues as Morton built on the momentum started last fall in Arizona. Two scoreless innings from Morton and Zach Schreiber today against the Dogs at Dark Star and the Bravos cruise.
Already time for the end of an era, folks. Tomorrow’s trip to Vero will be the last time the Braves face the Dodgers at Dodgertown. Six decades of spring baseball and Dodger blue comes to an end once the team breaks camp for LA at the end of next month. The Dodgers will honor team greats prior to each spring training game, and Maury Wills has been tapped to be honored tomorrow. Personally I hope another team moves to Vero next season. Those folks have been very good to LA over the years and deserve a better fate. The Dodgers will move to Arizona and the Cactus League in ’09.
Note to Fred Wilpon: Try Central Michigan next year.

Greg in TN, couldn’t agree more on Dodgertown. Really hope the Orioles will move up there and keep the old place going. Would just be a shame to see it slip away, be like losing Wrigley — both are showing age, both lack the amenities of the newer parks, but both are steeped in history and full of charm and character and quirky, distinct features.
By Greg in TN
February 27, 2008 11:59 PM | Link to this
DOB,
I’m right there with you. I’ve been to Wrigley a few times. Granted, there’s no parking at all to speak of, which is fine since there’s an El stop a block away from the right field foul pole, the concourses are narrow, I know the pressbox is tiny and the clubhouses have to be laughably small compared to today’s standards. During one of my last few trips I saw the netting that protects the lower stands from concrete that had begun to flake off and fall from the upper deck. Even with her age, the ballpark is a beaut to see with the ivy on the walls, the manual scoreboard, the bleachers on the rooftops across Waveland and Sheffield. Anyone that is a baseball fan should make that trek if they are able to do so. A friend and I are talking about a trek to see Yankee Stadium sometime this summer, if it works out that we go over to Shea, we’ll do that.
I gotta believe somebody will move to Vero Beach. If not the Orioles, somebody will. The Dodgers have put money into the facility there over the years and the locals always supported the ST games as well as Vero Beach Dodger games. Two unique things I always remember about Holman Stadium from the times TBS broadcast spring games from there was the open dugouts and no outfield fence (I know the Dodgers at some point added a chain link fence since that time). There always seemed to be big crowds out beyond the outfield playing area.

brian thanks Chris. Or should I say thanks Scott Borea$$
It’s an interesting point. College players are generally draftable after their third year (sometimes earlier, depending on circumstances) and many choose to leave school early. The rationale is that a college junior has more options than a senior. He can either sign with his drafting team or go back to school. This will sometimes make a team give the player a larger than normal signing bonus if they really want him. The downside to a player returning to college for his senior year is that if/when he is drafted again, the player loses that leverage. The drafting team may be able to offer a slightly lower signing bonus to entice the player to sign. Once a senior is drafted, his only choice is to either sign or wait a year (out of affiliated ball) to be re-drafted the following year (see: Matt Harrington).
I don’t have a clue what the Braves were offering. Looking at what the picks around him were getting it is safe to assume that he would have received between 450k-500k to sign. And for whatever reason, he chose not to take it. Borass might have told him not to, as he may get drafted much higher in the 08 draft, thereby getting a larger signing bonus.

This fan has been racking his brain trying to figure how to improve this 2008 Braves team and I might have come up with an idea that will do just that.
My worries about the depth issues on the left side of the infield are not unfounded and the bench is still a question mark.
We know the Braves are going to lose one or more of the following pitchers in trade or through a waiver claim : Blaine Boyer , Royce Ring and Chris Resop.
The Braves have backed up Chipper Jones in the past with guys like Wilson Betemit , Willy Aybar and Mark Derosa(I sincerely wish this young man a speedy recovery).
Lord know I want Chipper to stay healthy. However , it’s better to be safe than sorry. The Braves need to find a suitable caddy for him before the season starts and I think I have found him.
Mark Teahen is a former 2002 1st round pick (39th overall) who played his entire minor league career as a 3rd baseman. The Royals have since moved him to the outfield due to the emergence of Alex Gordon.
We are talking about a young 6-3 left handed 26 year old with a power bat who can back up Chipper at 3B , platoon with Diaz in LF and pinch hit off the bench. He makes the league minimum so money isn’t an issue and won’t be an unrestricted free agent until 2011.
Teahen is a fine defender who could be had if the Braves are willing to make the right trade proposal that will attract the Kansas City Royals.
Something like a Blaine Boyer , Gregor Blanco or Boyer and Royce Ring package might do it.
Teahen would give the Braves the ability to carry five outfielders without sacrificing depth on the infield. Teahen and Infante would be the two backup infielders with Lillibridge and Prado just a phone call away in Richmond.
not to mention that the Braves have had pretty good luck with players from the 2002 draft.

How Bout Some ST Humor? Long live the spring training notes
Caple
By Jim Caple Page 2
The best part of spring training? I mean, apart from the weather, the beer and the sunbathing college students? It’s the daily notes on each team that fill you in on all the news from around the Cactus and Grapefruit leagues …
Off Base
AMERICAN LEAGUE
BALTIMORE — Owner Peter Angelos is having second thoughts about trading LHP Erik Bedard but is reportedly close to signing off on the Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas deal. …
BOSTON — The Red Sox announced a new ticket plan in which fans have the option of paying with a subprime rate mortgage, their first- or second-born child (depending on seat location) or a body organ, preferably a kidney because that would leave the fan with another one for 2009. … After consulting with several doctors, RHP Curt Schilling has decided to treat his injured shoulder by wearing a bloody sweatshirt. … Boston GM Theo Epstein signed Terry Francona to the longest contract extension any manager has received in team history: three innings, or until he does something that upsets the fans, whichever comes first. … The Boston Globe has begun work on a commemorative book for the 2008 season titled “162-0.” … The Red Sox announced they will raise ticket prices again by the time you finish reading this sentence. …
CHICAGO WHITE SOX — The White Sox unveiled their new slogan for the 2008 season: “Come See The Chicago Team That Has Won A World Series This Century, Not That We Have Any Other Particular Team In Mind, Certainly Not One That Blames Its Many Losses On Goats And Its Own Fans.” The team is currently looking for a billboard wide enough for the slogan. …
Terry still has an inning-by-inning contract with Red Sox Nation. CLEVELAND — Paul Byrd’s dentist said the pitcher has two cavities, recession along his gum line, an abscess and a slight tear in his labrum. He recommends two fillings, a root canal, flossing twice daily and regular injections of HGH. … The team’s shipment of midge larvae arrived yesterday and will be ready to hatch in early October. …
DETROIT — OF Gary Sheffield says that agent Scott Boras is “a bad man” who bought HD-DVD instead of Blu-ray, always leaves the toilet seat up, stole his personal chef, Anatole, is usually late returning his DVDs to the video store, “and worst of all — charges way too high a commission.” … Miguel Cabrera attributes his weight loss to a new diet that restricts him to fruit, vegetables and rice cakes but allows him to feed on as many fastballs as he wants. … The surgeon general has determined that sitting in sections 131-136 behind the Detroit dugout is hazardous to fans’ health due to the secondhand smoke rising from Jim Leyland’s cigarettes. …
KANSAS CITY — In addition to free parking, the Royals are trying to boost attendance at spring training by selling tickets to other teams’ games. …
LOS ANGELES ANGELS — A freak injury sidelined OF Vladimir Guerrero during batting practice when his right hand became stuck to the pine tar on his batting helmet and had to be surgically removed. … RHP Francisco Rodriguez and the Angels are nearing agreement on a landmark three-year deal that will allow him to become a free agent in the bottom of the fifth inning on July 3, 2012. …
MINNESOTA — Fresh off their multiple Oscars, the Minnesota-native Coen brothers told reporters they are making a sequel to “Fargo” titled “No Country for Free Agents” in which owner Carl Pohlad gets the money and then puts Twins fans through the wood chipper. … In related news, the Pohlad family placed C Joe Mauer and 1B Justin Morneau on Craig’s List yesterday. …
N.Y. YANKEES — LHP Andy Pettitte held another press conference to tell the truth about his previous statements about HGH, which turned out to be lies. … To celebrate the final year at Yankee Stadium, the team announced it is holding a contest to select the lucky fan who will have the honor of throwing out the last battery at an opposing player. … 3B Alex Rodriguez announced that he is opting out of running laps at the end of team workouts. …
OAKLAND — The Athletics will attempt to increase attendance by staying in Japan and playing the rest of their home games in Tokyo as well. …
SEATTLE — The Orioles told general manager Bill Bavasi that LHP Erik Bedard is in the mail and should arrive any day now. … Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day. Richie Sexson will swing and miss it. … Ichiro got stuck while stretching yesterday and had to be pried free. …
“Just think of the publicity if we had a bobble judge night.” TAMPA BAY — On second thought, Tampa Bay now wants to be referred to as the Devils. … General manager Andrew Friedman said Tampa Bay may sign OF-DH Barry Bonds, depending on whether it can make the finances work and also find a batting helmet large enough to fit him. …
TEXAS — The Rangers named Nolan Ryan their new team president and Opening Day starter. …
TORONTO — General manager J.P. Ricciardi says he is hopeful the favorable exchange rate for the Canadian dollar will allow the Blue Jays to waste even more money on stupid contracts for oft-injured players such as B.J. Ryan and A.J. Burnett. …
NATIONAL LEAGUE
ARIZONA — In an effort to boost attendance, the Diamondbacks have hired Jose Canseco and Roger Clemens’ ex-nanny to host drunken pool parties at their stadium. … LHP Randy Johnson pronounced his back 100 percent healthy after striking out six batters and killing two pigeons. …
ATLANTA — LHP Tom Glavine said he is delighted to be back in an Atlanta uniform and vowed to return the team to a division championship and a first-round elimination in the playoffs. …
CHICAGO — Manager Lou Piniella told reporters that thanks to his playoff strategy last October, RHP Carlos Zambrano is fully rested and able to go three or four innings in his first Cactus League start. … RHP Ryan Dempster said his bold prediction that the Cubs will win their first World Series in exactly 100 years was taken out of context. “My full quote was that the Cubs will win the World Series this year … right after hell freezes over.” … Tribune and Cubs owner Sam Zell says he wants to see cheerleaders at Wrigley Field, preferably wearing nothing but G-strings and dancing with the foul poles. … The Cubs held a brief but emotional ceremony after broadcaster Ron Santo accidentally pronounced RF Kosuke F*******’s name correctly. …
CINCINNATI — New manager Dusty Baker said he will start his pitchers off cautiously in the Grapefruit League season, putting them on a strict 140-pitch count until mid-March. …
“What do you think about a two-man rotation?” COLORADO — The Rockies have yet to report to spring training because they are still waiting for the 2007 World Series to start. …
FLORIDA — Team president David Samson said local taxpayers should hurry up and build the Marlins a new stadium while there still are players on the team. … The Marlins are asking fans to bring two cans of food or nonperishable items to Opening Day for their players. …
HOUSTON — RHP Roger Clemens showed up at camp to pitch batting practice Tuesday and said he is willing to come out of retirement only if the Astros allow him to only pitch in months with a K in them. Otherwise, he said he and former trainer Brian McNamee will travel the vaudeville circuit performing the old “Who’s On First?” routine. … Former 2B Craig Biggio also visited camp to watch batting practice and showed he still has it by getting hit by a pitch. …
LOS ANGELES — In an effort to generate interest in a region of the world that currently has no interest in big league baseball, MLB International is having the Dodgers play the Padres in a two-game exhibition series at the Marlins’ stadium in Miami. … After 62 years, the Dodgers will mark their final spring at Vero Beach by leaving behind a bunch of empty beer cans, a dirty bathroom and a weird stain that you can’t get out on the kitchen counter. …
MILWAUKEE — RHP Eric Gagne held a press conference yesterday and apologized for his ERA. …
N.Y. METS — The Mets will celebrate their final year at Shea Stadium by selling hot dogs from their first year at the ballpark, where coincidentally the hot dogs have been slowly rotating on the grill since that 1964 season. … General manager Omar Minaya admitted that he faces felony grand theft charges for stealing LHP Johan Santana from the Twins. … Mr. Met vigorously denied Kirk Radomski’s charge that his head is so big because the former clubhouse attendant supplied him with regular doses of HGH. He did, however, say Mrs. Met used the drug while preparing for a Sports Illustrated swimsuit shoot. … The Mets somehow lost another game in the standings to the Phillies. …
PHILADELPHIA — In his boldest prediction yet, SS Jimmy Rollins said the Phillies will repeat as NL East champs and that baseball will one day be played on the moon with players riding hoverboards like the ones in “Back to the Future II.” … LHP Jamie Moyer pitched batting practice yesterday and appeared to be right on track for the season after being clocked at “Three Mississippi.” … 1B Ryan Howard celebrated his record $10 million arbitration win by making a down payment on Red Sox season tickets. …
PITTSBURGH — There was a little commotion yesterday when new 1B Doug Mientkiewicz refused to give up the baseballs that were thrown to him during infield practice. … The Pirates modeled their new uniforms, with “Chico’s Bail Bonds” written across the back of the jerseys. …
ST. LOUIS — OF Juan Gonzalez spent the entire day receiving treatments in the trainer’s room and pronounced himself in midseason form. … Manager Tony La Russa got drunk, challenged everyone to a fight, then said that he could prove with geometric logic that former Cardinals 3B Scott Rolen stole the team’s strawberries. …
SAN FRANCISCO — Three Catholic families have taken up residence in the lockers formerly reserved for ex-Giants OF Barry Bonds. … LHP Steve Kline reportedly lost 40 pounds over the winter, but it appears C Bengie Molina found them. …

Will the real Metropolitan Man please stand up??? Someone is posting as me and having actual conversations with DOB and the blog. The imposter has taste obviously from his postings but he is no Metropolitan Man. The blog has had this problem before with bloggers stealing names but stealing the name Metropolitan Man is an offense punishable by multiple 3rd place finishes. You know how long it took me to get rival baseball fans to recongnize that name only for it to be tarnished by an imposter. But I digress, please fix the problem before the season starts DOB. I think most of you know an “Authentic” Metropolitan Man’s post when you see it…its alwyas anti other teams (especially braves) and always Pro METS!!!
Now baseball: I see you guys took it to the Bulldogs. You wasted a years worth of offense on a college team…congradualtions. METS conserved their offense against Michigan for the season. And for those of you who saw the boxscore of the METS losing to Detroit, it was an encouraging lost that showed Pelfry rise and the METS back-ups make some noise against Bonderman.
Article Snippet: The Tigers scored four runs in the seventh for a 4-2 win, but they didn’t put up much of a fight against Pelfrey, who cruised through his first tuneup without a glitch. Pelfrey allowed one hit in his scoreless two innings — an infield single — and fell behind in the count only to the final batter he faced, who lined into a double play.
Not a good sign for the Tigers: A Mets lineup filled with backups roughed up Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman. The veteran right-hander was touched for two earned runs and four hits in just two innings of work, including an RBI triple by non-roster third baseman Anderson Machado.
Heres another young guy baseball better lookout for:
And while it’s rare that any player can make the climb as dramatically as Joba Chamberlain, the Mets believe they have such a candidate in 6-foot-5 reliever Eddie Kunz, the closer for two-time NCAA champion Oregon State whom they drafted last June. As Kunz himself said Tuesday, “The coaches here have been telling me they want to put me on that Joba Chamberlain trail.” With a 95-mph sinking fastball that dives down and in on righthanded hitters, a decent slider and a changeup to get lefty hitters out, Kunz has Mets people talking like he could be at Shea sometime this season.
PORT ST. LUCIE - John MaineJohn Maine wasn’t mad that a cross-dressing impostor tried to sully his good name last November. If anything, the New York Mets ’ young right-hander was flattered.
“I thought it was kind of great, actually,” Maine said yesterday. “I mean, of all the people on the team, this guy picked me to impersonate. Maybe that means my name is getting out there.”
Tell Tim Hudson nice try!!!
See you homers April 4,5, and 6th. Dont let us METS fans outnumber you guys at the TED. Its the regular season, not the playoffs so come on out!!!

Mornin’ denizens,
Bravos vs. Dodgers. Vero Beach. I envy all y’all down there. Enjoy.
On another topic — since I was having my head handed to me on the blog Sunday by DOB and others about another sport (NCAA hoops), I thought it was worth noting that Len Elmore (who ought to know, since he played against David Thompson, et al.) said last night that he’d vote for Tyler Hansbrough for national player of the year over Michael Beasley. For one thing, he said, Hansbrough has been putting up better numbers since Lawson was hurt and the Heels keep winning, which you can’t consistently say about K-State.
Oh yeah, and he agreed with the insufferable Mike Patrick that you have to start talking about Hansbrough as one of the top two or three players in ACC history, especially if he comes back next year.
Just saying. Off to work. That is all.

If the Mets won 88 games last season without Pedro (most of the season), without Santana, without Duaner Sanchez and a collaps in September. How can any “HONEST” brave fan believe the Mets will not be better in 2008. The Mets have also upgraded their defense by adding Schneider behind the plate and Church in right field. Meanwhile, yes getting Glavine adds some depth to the braves rotation but they’ve lost some defense with the departures of Jones and Renteria. If fact after Chipper I would say Renteria was your best clutch hitter. I see the brave winning about the same amount of games as last year. Gaining Glavine but losing some moxy in Jones and Renteria will be a wash. The braves will win about 82-84 games.

SNIPPER losing AJ is an upgrade for the braves. His bat was making more damage than his glove was doing good. Edgar is a big loss, but you will have nightmares about Yunel.
Still half of your regulars are injury prone (only 1 for the braves).
Braves have a better bench than last year and their your players (as your young pitchers do) have another year under their belt (C, RF, 2B, SS). Lots of young player waiting just to explode (BJ, lillibridge, JOJO, JJJ, Anderson, just to name a few).
If you think braves will not improve from 2007, you are just sick.
I havent even mentioned yet SP which looks healthy as far as i know and that includes Hampton. I can tell u if Hampton makes the rotation, that our rotation from 1-4 can matchup against your ACE any day.
Bullpen….. the group can be lights out.

just got to Holman Stadium (Dodgertown) after the 2-hour drive. drive was nice and easy, sun beating down on the car. but the niceness is over.
damn it’s cold again, and this time we don’t have the luxury of an enclosed pressbox like we had yesterday at Dark Star. here at Dodgertown, it’s wide open and it’s about 52 degrees, wind blowing in from north directly on the pressbox, and sun, unfortunately, completely blocked. brrrr…. no fun typing when your hands are cold.
but hey, i know most of you are in far colder places (albeit not sitting outside typing). dodgers are on the field warming up in the dodger-blue fleece sweatshirts. andruw’s got a heavier jacket on, out in center-field, playing catch with a dude who’s at the right-field foul line.
eware, I’m often guilty of being a music snob. however, when i like something mainstream I’m not afraid to admit it. and her NEW one is good. i’d read a bunch of good reviews from critics i respect, so i gave it a listen — and liked it. found it for less than 10 bucks somewhere.

Lots of Unproven players mentioned there Overlord. Hampton is a big question mark. I think Jones(defensivley/power) and Renteria will be greatly missed. The two keys for the braves will be this. Hampton coming back and contributing. Hudson not fading in the 2nd half on the season. The last two years he’s come out strong but faded down the steach. We’ll see……

Sniper makes the same mistake that all fans make, including Braves’ fans. Team improvement and record improvement don’t necessarily have a high correlation. If this year’s team were playing last year’s schedule, then, yes, you could say that, since the current team is more talented than the last, its record should improve.
But, unfortunately, you have to play THIS year’s schedule, and all of this year’s teams have tried to improve, also (probably). Some teams will play better than last year, some will play worse, and which of those YOUR team encounters is the determining factor of whether the record improves. Just because your team has better talent than last year doesn’t mean the team will have a better record than last year.

BravesFan, you’re not changing my opinion on that subject, whatsoever.
ONLY if Hansbrough comes back next year, not ESPECIALLY IF he comes back, can he carve himself a spot among the very greats in ACC history, in my opinion. ONLY if.
And there’s a very good chance he does, I’ll predict. You know why? Because there’s at least a half-dozen guys who’ll be selected ahead of him in the draft, and possibly 10.
Beasley is hands-down the No. 1 selection in the draft, and anyone who doesn’t vote for him for player of the year will be voting for Tyler’s career, not performance this season. Unless you’re going to penalize Beasley for being on a fringe-top 25 team with no other McDonald’s All-Americas.
Let me ask you: How do you think Beasley would do if he swapped places with Hansbrough. How do you think UNC would do in that situation, and how would K-State do? Just asking.

DOB, I won’t argue the point on Beasley too much because I haven’t seen him play as much. But, Hansbrough is a monster, and I think he puts up the same numbers at K-State as at UNC. NOBODY defends him on the low post. It’s like the Hawks trying to defend Artest, not happenin’. For the record, I’m a SC fan (talk about your rough seasons… geez), though I grew up watching the ACC. Back in the Sampson/Lamp/Jones UVa days, Gene Banks/Jim Spanarkle/Bill Foster at Duke, Thurl Bailey/Sidney Lowe at NC State… those were the days. Jefferson Pilot was a lifeline in rural SC.

What good is it to have high expectations on some players during Spring Training? Isn’t it a bit overrating?
During the past years, did you remember how many players had an unforgettable spring training and then did nothing?
Take Mark Redman, for example, last year. The promising veteran, trying to recover from shaky years in Pittsburgh, KC. He did rather well in KC compared to other years, but what did he do after spring training?? Everyone was bragging about how locked-up he was for the starting rotation and how good he would fare with the Braves. And how many games did he win for the Braves afterward??…My point, exactly.
Shouldn’t we give second-chances to people who DO NOT do well in Spring Training, and keep an eye on those who do? All I am saying is that Spring Training is overrated when it comes to judging people who want to secure a spot in the roster. Sometimes, relying on first-impressions for one month can end up being painful. Short-lived first-impressions are nothing but shor-lived first-impressions.
Why can’t we give Joe Borchard a shot? Why can’t we give Flowers a shot? Why can’t we put Jurjens No.4, and Bennett No.5? I mean, do we really need Hampton? The guy will surely have a stint or two in the DL. Why not give Jo-jo or Morton a spot in the starting rotation?
I’m not Terrence Moore or Keith Law or someone from sports illustrated, but I still believe the Braves should give up on Hampton, and give space to the other youngsters. I’ll be more than glad to read your replies.

SNIPPER, unproven players are not braves key, its just a plus. If 25% of those unproven players make a big splash it will be like a big bang. No need for them to make a big splash for the braves to win lots of games. Hampton is doing well, nothing but good news from him last 2 weeks a not a single bad news last 2.5 months from him.
AJ power will be missed? That is not a fact, not even near a fact. You really think a team that has chipper, tex, francouer and BMac will miss 30 HR? not to mention we have enough power in middle IF. Better think twice about it.
About Hudson, he was just great, not better number in part because of bullpen blows.
ncscoots, upgrading your roster statistically will improve your season record more often than not, if it wasnt the case teams wouldnt do it.

The Need for Speed:
I know this topic is overused, ut I still long for the days when we had Giles, Furcal. IOW, speed. Someone said: “oh yeah, we have speed.”
Yeah, but Gorkys won’t be with us next year. Ditto for Schafer unless something happens to Kotsay. Anderson should be our real leadoff hitter, but Diaz will probably have more playing time there. And B.Jones could win the spot over Anderson so goodbye to that. Lillibridge has speed but he won’t be a starter.
So we only have Escobar, Lillibridge, and maybe Anderson for speedsters. Mets have Reyes, Castillo, Wright, Church. Phils have J-Roll, Utley, Taguchi, Victorino, Feliz, etc.
If we want to compete with these teams, we need creativity, not home runs (which are overrated). We need hit-and-run, fundamental baseball, bunt runners, etc. We would need Anderson and Lillibridge more often, and maybe Schafer as well in order to be more respected as a base-stealing threat team. Now, I’m not saying its the only way to win games, I’m just saying we need to try a little bit of everything if we want to win the division.

Yeah, Fan-coeur, home runs are slightly overrated. Small ball is better. Maybe in BP Frenchheart should have concentrated a little more on small ball, and not swing for the fences so much. (“Lose an Andruw, gain an Andruw.”) But it would be good for his power numbers to go up over 19 homers.
Ugh……and the Mets and Phillies have too much speed for my comfort!

Anymore, I try desperately to not get drawn into the “speed kills” argument (I’ve found that those who think so cannot be convinced otherwise, ever).

Snipper(I like that-much more accurate)-Maybe you should actually see some of what we have down here at Spring Training, instead of sitting up there in your auto body shop talking nonsense.
Maybe if you had seen Anderson back up a play at first base from right filed after running 100 feet (on a ball that never even left the infield), or seen Jordan Schaefer make a catch robbing a double against the wall,in fashion that was reminiscent of Andruw Jones, or Yunel making plays Edgar couldn’t come close to, you wouldn’t be talking out of your a$$.
Dude-Defensively, you were one of the worst teams in the NL last year. Throughout your pitiful tanking in September, you were making 5-6 errors a night. Go look it up. The Mets’ defense positively sucked. Most of the known and knowledgeable baseball world was stunned when Wright won the Gold Glove, considering there were at least four better defensive third basemen in the NL. Go look THAT one up,too.
As far as Church in right-Green was not a bad fielder and he hit over 20 points higher than Church. You may have a somewhat better catcher defensively, but lost 40 points in batting average. Moises is one running catch away from his final hamstring tear-Beltran one catch away from knee surgery, yet again. We have the best defensive 1B in the league-y’all have an aging and often injured DelGado. Dream on.
Whatever,Dude, y’all will be going down in flames, so enjoy your idiotic blather while you can. It won’t last very long into the season.

Fan-coeur i think braves took a step in the right direction in the speed department and creativity the moment they got rid of AJ and got anderson and kotsay. Same for the replacement of renteria with yunel (speedwise in this case). I agree we could use a little bit more speed, but braves are not turtles. Jeff is fast for a RF. But the only problem is not the players, cox is not a Hit & Run nor base stealing fan. I think he likes HRs better.

FanCouer-Dude, you are aware that Mike Hampton’s salary will be paid whether or not we cut him? Why in the world if he is able to pitch and will be paid anyway, would you not utilize him? If he does get injured again, THEN one of the young guys will pitch and insurance will cover his salary. Otherwise, why use up an option on a younger guy, when it could be used later, as well?

Fancouer I like Josh Anderson and all but the Braves are not gonna win with Josh Anderson starting or batting leadoff. However, I hope he will be invaluable in that Endy Chavez kind of way. That’s the best the Braves can hope for out of him. The worst case scenario is that he is nothing more than an outfield version of Pete Orr.

Does anyone really know how this is gonna end up? When the Braves were smacking around the Phils in the opening series last season and Manuel then put his Opening Day starter into the bullpen, did anyone think they would win the division?
When the Braves went into Colorado in late April last season and the Rockies were 9-15 and the Braves were 15-8 and the Braves were about to finish a sweep of the Rockies until Bob Wickman blew the save, did anyone think the Rockies were gonna go to the World Series 6 months later? Heck, the Braves had a 6.5 game lead on them after only one month at that point.

bsj: Exactly right — Hansbrough would put up the same numbers he has at UNC if he played for K-State. Numbers that are lesser in every category than Beasley’s except free throws. Beasley leads nation in rebounding, ranks third in scoring, and oh, yeah, actually blocks shots, Something Tyler doesn’t do….
Reid in EAV, haven’t heard the new Tift Merritt, but will get it. She’s outstanding. San her with at Smith’s Old Bar six years ago, with the equally great Caitlin Cary….

I know many here are skeptical of Josh Anderson and his potential. From what I’ve seen of him this Spring (and I was at ten different workouts where I really paid attention),this kid is going to be good-actually, he already is. He will not hit for power, but will line many over the shortstop and second baseman’s heads and will beat out numerous ground balls.
He is an excellent defensive outfielder, maybe only a quarter notch below Andruw. He works very hard and has absolute blazing speed.
He comes in on the ball like few I’ve seen in a long time. He will take away many singles, just like Andruw did. Backing up that play at first yesterday was stunning. He literally came from 100 feetaway in mere seconds. The play never even left the infield.
Jordan Schaefer, too. He made a spectacular catch, quite reminiscent of Andruw yesterday. The future is bright.

DOB,
Won’t change your mind on Hansbrough. Understood. But you ask how much better the Heels would be if T swapped places with Beasley. I can’t say — and you probably can’t either =— because who knows if Beasley would apply himself to Roy’s system and use his superior physical talents (no argument there) to make the team better? Would he guard people, work within framework of the offense and defense? Do one-and-done guys typically buy into demanding systems and coaches who are tough disciplinarians? (OK, Greg Oden did. Too bad he left early.)
Coach K’s had a significant drop off in talent in recent years, but the Dookies keep winning because he finds guys who play the way he demands.
The same would apply to Beasley. Of course, I’d love to find out, even if he was around for only one year.

Nscoots, again, I’m not saying speed is everything. I only said we should have a bit more of it if we want to impress more in the east. And I can be convinced if the argument is very reasonable and logical.
Overlord, I agree. But IMHO I think we should use more of it. Remember when we had Quilvio Veras one year, and he won a game for Tommy (Glavine) 1-0 over the Dodgers, because he had a hit, someone bunted him to second, and the next hitter drove him in (all in the 9th inning)? Sometimes, it helps.
Braveheart, I like that comparison with Endy Chavez, and really hope it turns out that way (like the 2006 Chavez, hopefully).
Lew, agreed. I’d just like to have the old Hampton back, not the one who struggled to get out of an inning, that’s all.

Brandon13, how in the world can you not think The Bends is as good as those other two? To me, it might be their best one. Most long-term Radiohead fans I know, who’ve liked the band since the beginning, since “Creep” and the debut album Pablo Honey came out, agree that The Bends, their second album, is terrific.
Don’t get me wrong, I still really like The Bends but I just don’t think it’s as good as the other three.

I have a question about the following from yesterday’s blog:
“Billy Wagner was furious when Michigan center fielder Kevin Cislo tried to lay down a bunt during Wagner’s one inning of work. The Wolverines were lucky the bunt went foul, because Wagner said he might have drilled someone if it had not. “It’s hot and I’m just trying to work on some pitches,” Wagner fumed afterward. “Go do that against Villanova!”
My daughter and some friends wondered if there might be actually some “unwritten rule” that the college kids aren’t supposed to bunt/make the pitchers really do anything…or is this just Billy Wagner being a moron?

Lew, I’m not skeptical of Anderson’s potential…I believe he’ll be good at what he is: a speedy defensive OF with no power. And that would be fine, if the Braves had another run-producing OF besides Francoeur. They don’t.
If the Braves are hedging their bets on Kotsay’s back, then Anderson as the fourth OF could make sense. The downside of that insurance is little run production from 2/3 of the OF (Diaz/Kotsay/Anderson).

Sandy, yes, there is an unwritten rule. MLB teams do college teams a huge favor by playing these games. They’re not supposed to bunt. If the pitcher doesn’t want to pitch out of the stretch they’re not supposed to steal. They’re not supposed to try to break up double plays. They’re not supposed to pitch around batters strategically.
