World Series gets a mile high

It’s not the cozy confines of Boston’s self-proclaimed “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark,” but Coors Field is a pretty special place to watch a ballgame, too. And it’s not cramped like Fenway Park.

Of course, any place is a good place to see a World Series game, which the good folks of Colorado are going to finally get to do tonight, when the Fall Classic gets high — about 5,200 feet, the elevation of Denver.

And just for the record, the highest previous altitude for a World Series game was 1,117 feet at Phoenix in 2001. This fact brought to you by (imagine your company name here, then give us a call and maybe we can work something out).

I remember covering the 1997 World Series when I was a Marlins beat writer, and even that huge football stadium in Miami had great atmosphere when nearly 80,000 people were packed in there to watch the World Series.

(And speaking of contrasts, Boston-Denver is nothing compared to Cleveland-Florida in that series, when we went from snow during batting practice before Game 3 in Cleveland, to temps in the 80s with high humidity in Miami).

Anyway, it’s beautiful here today in Colorado, though the temperature’s supposed to drop quickly. It was 50 and sunny this afternoon, which in Colorado qualifies as balmy (I saw plenty of locals wearing shorts on the 16th Street Mall downtown).

The Rockies are down 0-2 in the Series, but the atmosphere outside the ballpark was festive and upbeat this afternoon - maybe these folks believe their team can overcome that deficit to win, or maybe they’re just having a great time.

If you’ve never been out here, the streets around Coors Field in LoDo (Lower Downtown) are just lined with cool bars and restaurants, and the people are friendly. I’d recommend a visit to Denver during baseball season for any seamhead, especially now that the Rockies are good and should be for the next few seasons, with all the homegrown young talent they’ve got on their roster.

“Out in the city, everywhere you go, people are on fire,” manager Clint Hurdle said this afternoon, when someone asked about how the response from Denver during the Rockies’ “Miracle on Blake Street” run to the World series.

By on fire, he meant pumped up, thrilled, caught up in this ride.

But if they don’t win tonight, that ride might end abruptly Sunday. If the Rockies go down three-games-to-none, this thing’s not even going to go to a fifth game Monday in Denver, much less go back to Boston for six or seven.

Speaking of tomorrow, I’m still scratching my head a bit over Hurdle’s decision to start Aaron Cook, who hasn’t pitched in a major league game since Aug. 10 because of a strained side. Nothing like pitching in a game for the first time in 10 weeks and having it be against this Boston lineup. Yikes.

His name is Paul Brown, and he’s an idiot. OK, maybe he’s not an idiot. Maybe he’s just a passionate fan taking the extra step to show his allegiance to his team. That’s something we all can appreciate.

However … this is a bit much. More than a bit much.

Brown, a 31-year-old dude from Denver, has a tattoo of Coors Field. But it’s not just a little tat on his shoulder or calf or whatever. Paul Brown this week got an exterior depiction of Coors Field tattooed across his entire back.

This according to a story in today’s Rocky Mountain News. I was so impressed, or horrified, that I spent part of my Saturday morning trying to find Paul Brown’s phone number so I could call him and do a story. Seriously.

But as you can imagine, there are plenty of Paul Browns in most metro areas, Denver included. And I wasn’t even sure if this Paul Brown’s number was one of those listed.

Plus, I was hungry and really wanted to go get some huevos rancheros for breakfast, which I did. So we’re going to have to go with a mental imagery of Paul Brown’s massive Coors Field tattoo on his back, since the story wasn’t accompanied by a picture (can’t believe they didn’t get a picture, since they did talk to the guy).

He told the newspaper, “I love the place. I’ll still be going to Coors Field when I’m in my 60s and 70s. I take my kids now; I’ll be taking my grandkids then. So I’ll never regret this.”

Let’s hope not, Paul. Let’s hope not.

By the way, it cost $500 and took about six hours for the tattoo artist at Freaky’s Tattoo and Body Piercing to do the work.

The story in the Rocky Mountain News did have a couple other pictures of guys getting Rockies-themed tattoos, including one groovy-looking fella getting a purple-and-black design with a Rockies logo inside a bleached-skull Grateful Dead symbol.

Hey, like we said, it is the highest-ever World Series.

Marcus released again: You’ve all read that Marcus Giles was released by the Padres yesterday, I’m assuming. That’s twice in about 10 months that the former Braves second baseman has been dropped from a roster.

When the Braves failed to tender him a contract last winter because they didn’t want to pay anywhere near the $5 million-or-more salary he would have commanded in his final year of arbitration, the Padres signed him to a free-agent contract with a $3.25 million salary in 2007 and a $4 million option for 2008 with a $500,000 buyout.

They went with the buyout, pulling the plug on the Giles brothers reunion after one season. They’re from suburban San Diego (El Cajon) and the Giles boys had always wanted to play on the same team, but this feel-good story didn’t work out, simply because Marcus Giles is a shell of the player he once was.

He’s only 29, but this season he hit .229 with four homers, 39 RBIs and a .304 OBP, losing first his leadoff job, then his starting second-base job.

It’s been a steady slide for Giles, who went from being one of, if not the, best-hitting second basemen in baseball in 2003 to being released by the Braves and the Padres.

Giles was terrific in 2003, when he hit .316 with 49 doubles, 21 homers, a .390 OBP and a .526 slugging percentage, for a stunning .916 OPS. He had still-solid OPS totals of .821 in 2004 and .826 in 2005, but in 2006 for the Braves he hit .262 with 11 homers and a .728 OBP in his first season as a leadoff man.

For whatever reason, the Padres decided to use him at leadoff again this season, even though Giles made it pretty clear throughout the 2006 season that he didn’t like hitting leadoff and never felt comfortable there.

He started out strong for the Padres, hitting .327 with a .376 OBP in April. But soon after, the bottom fell out.

From May 7 until the end of the season, he hit .191 with 16 extra-base hits and a .276 OBP in 304 at-bats (88 games).

Since Sept. 5, 2005, Giles has hit .244 with 55 doubles and 20 homers in 1,056 at-bats. Think about those numbers — in 2003 alone, he hit .316 with 49 doubles and 21 homers in 551 at-bats.

Unless he’s able to have a bounce-back season for someone, there are going to be suspicions about Giles, fair or unfair, simply because his performance declined after the arrival of steroid testing in baseball, then declined further after the subsequent ban on amphetamines, or “greenies.”

For his sake, I hope he rejuvenate shis career with some team. Giles was a hard-working, hard-nosed player, a little man who played a very big role for some strong Braves teams.

With Glenn Hubbard’s assistance, he transformed himself from a stone-handed minor-leaguer into a solid defensive player and an NL All-Star.

It’d be a shame if it’s over this soon, if he’s done before 30, if his career becomes little more than a footnote in Braves history, clouded by suspicions. It really would.

“YOU WILD COLORADO” by Johnny Cash

Oh you wild raging river like my woman’s lips you lure me

Pied piper of the desert roll on to the sea

You’re the same at noon or midnight and I follow where you go

But you’re planning no returning you wild Colorado

If I had no love of life I’d become part of your flow

But I fear the place you’d take me you wild Colorado

Oh you wild raging river from the fountains of the mountains

You ripple down the valleys growing wide and swift and deep

With what power you cut your canyons how long ago

You’re as wayward as my woman you wild Colorado

If I had no love of life I’d become part of your flow

But I fear the place you’d take me you wild Colorado

I think there’s some unknown factor in the fall of Marcus Giles. Drugs, depression, a woman, a man, a combination of the two? Could be lots of things. One thing’s for sure; it CAN NOT be attributed to a lack of talent. He proved that before he fell into a career-threatening case of sucking.

Giles was fun to watch as a Brave. An outstanding 2nd batter he was. If he came for minimum salary he would be a nice pickup, but he won’t, and plus we already have Aybar and Escobar/Johnson if Renteria isn’t traded.

I’ve heard that the Rockies are going to push very hard to get Ian Snell this offseason. He sure would be a nice pickup…

Not to say this isn’t the most scintillating World Series… but I did hear that “Mad Men” is being scheduled for a second season next summer. 2.75 cheers for AMC. Anybody remember the series on AMC about 10-15 years ago about a 1940s radio station? I’d like to know its name. It was as good as Mad Men.

Okay, I will admit I am a skeptic when it comes to Marcus and being on roids, maybe that is unfair but if you just look at him and the change in his shoulders befor and after it is so obvious.

Marcus could still play if he would stop trying to hit the ball out of the park. That uppercut swing of his went south with the extra muscle mass. If he would dedicate himself to becoming a line drive type hitter he could still be a good ball player.

I hated it when Willie Harris jacked a couple out of the park last season, all of a sudden he thought he was the second coming of Babe Ruth and his OPS and batting average went south. It is okay for the little guys to hit one out once in a while but they should not try to make a living at it. Leave that to the guys like McCann who runs a 9.9 40. He has to jack them out but that’s his game.

Picked up a Rockies cap, going to wear it until spring training regardless if they win the series or not.

Final Episode of the Mutant Fly Origin mystery

Mr. Burns asked me to put together a little teaser for tonight’s episode of, “Mutant Origin of the Talking Fly, but me didn’t want to tease about such an important topic. Really didn’t…cross my thorax.

Me will just say that the final episode of the Burns/Fly sessions will involve mobsters, special security agents, journalists, furry mammals, detectives, Noir guys, several Johns (one from upstairs and the other from way upstairs), murderous spider gangs and a special appearance by DOB. Me have an interesting life.

Mr. Burns promises to entertain and amuse, but above and beyond all of that, he promises to unveil the mutant Fly-daddy. He said to just remember…its all about the esteemed Jimmy.

Got a good night ahead of us here. The wife went out to see a chick flick with her mom, so I’m at home in front of my TV with a bunch of great football games on, the World Series, and in-game blogging!

We’ve got Ohio St.-Penn St. at Happy Valley, South Carolina at Tennessee (Fulmer vs. Spurrier redux), and KU-TX A&M. DOB, your Jayhawks don’t look so hot in the first half. It’s been an ugly game so far. 0-0 at halftime.

And now we got Dice-K going in game 3. Has the Japanese media contingent grown??

I’d like to see this series get competitive, but it doesn’t look like it the way this first inning is starting off. C’mon Rox!

I’ve got a pretty good following here in Denver and have never had any unpleasantness except for the time I tattooed the really old broad with skin like paper. Caught her on fire. The Daily Buzz (Fly on Wall Report No. 031)

(Fly language translated for your convenience).

PART ONE OF A TWO-PART FINAL INTERVIEW: As Mr. Fly gathered himself after the Calabash Train Caper incident, Mr. Burns returned to the conference room with Mr. Schuerholz, along with several new faces: “DOB”, a specialized and tattooed security agent familiar with goings on at the Ted, and detective Guy Noir from somewhere in Minnesota. Both agents were assigned to watch over Mr. Fly for the duration of the interview.

There were also two other men in the hallway, brought in to guard the door. One was a big, scary looking man named Tony. Mr. Burns said he was actually a good fella…even sang soprano in a choir. Tony has a high-pitched voice but is tough. Tony was brought in to make sure the interview didn’t have a dark, cliffhanger ending. The last man on the team was a young guy from Cincinnati, named John. Nobody was really sure why John was there, but he kept saying that Fly would soon “get back in the game”.

With the room secured and safe from the Ziggy spider gang and other intruders, Mr. Fly said that he wanted to get right to it and get this mutant origin monkey off of his back. Sensing imminent disclosure, Mr. Burns asked everyone to be seated so the interview could begin:

MR. BURNS: for starters, let me thank Mr. Schuerholz for his help, the use of his office, the loan of his security agent specialist, detective and guards. Also, Mr. Schuerholz, I apologize for misinterpreting your, uh…role with Mr. Fly in our last interview.

MR. SCHUERHOLZ: you are most welcome…anything for my little buddy and you. Don’t worry about mistaking me for the mutant-dad, no offense taken. Let me introduce two top-notch men in their respective fields: You met Tony and young John, who are stationed outside in the hallway. Now meet Dob and Noir. You’re in good hands now and safe to finish your interview. These guys leave very few stones unturned in their cases.

MR. FLY: oh, me surrounded by rock collectors with boxes.

MR. BURNS: uh, I believe he meant…oh, nevermind. Let’s get right to it. The evidence has mounted and we have many clues as to your mutant origin father. To date, you’ve divulged the name, Jimmy S_. You’ve given us some of his history and modus operandi. We know he is familiar to all bloggers. Everyone here pretty much knows who it is, so…would you do the honors, share his name with us and fill in the blank?

MR. FLY: how did you know Arthur would join John and group to buy Braves?

MR. BURNS: who? Arthur? Buy team with John and a group? Tell us…

MR: SCHUERHOLZ: ahem, no Mr. Fly. That’s top secret. He meant blank, as in, empty space for mutant-daddy last name.

MR. FLY: all right. Sorry. Why is Dob looking through that telescope?

MR. BURNS: well, Mr. Fly, we’ll explain that later. Let’s stay on course here.

MR. FLY: oh sorry. Me should just spit it right out. Not easy though.

MR. BURNS: we understand Fly, but the sooner you let it out you are free and I can go into post-production…

MR. FLY: mutant origin is Jimmy. Jimmy S. esteemed Jimmy…S. Ji-Ji-…

MR. BURNS: a journalist, right? Sorry, scratch that…YOU have to tell it yourself.

MR. FLY: yes a tabloid journalist, named Mike Connor, but I call him Jimmy.

MR. BURNS: so that’s it? Mike Conner is the mutant origin? Who is…

MR. FLY: is Mr. Tony coming in?

Mr. BURNS: oh, he’s fine. Waiting on his daughter I think. She had a dinner date with him but didn’t show.

Mr. FLY: me like Tony. Me also like young John from Ohio. Me don’t want them to leave.

MR. BURNS: we’ll see about that Fly. For now, let’s talk about your dad, Mike Conner.

MR. FLY: is there any Florida Red Velvet cake left? Pie? Me so hungry.

MR. BURNS: we’ll have some and take a break if you promise and cross your heart, uh…thorax, that you’ll divulge your secret in the second half of this final interview.

MR. FLY: oh boy yes!!! Cross thorax with both wings and all legs too. Let’s invite young John Ohio, Dob, the Guy Noir and Tony the choir singer to have some cake too before the end.

(Ken Burns and company will return shortly to complete the last session of part two of the final interview, where the mutant origin daddy will be revealed, even if Ziggy has to be brought in to, uh…motivate Fly to talk)

Like I said, what’s gotten into Fogg?…

Dice-K was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts this season, but someone said he hit over .300 a year ago for Seibu.

Unfortunately, I’m not sitting next to the Japanese contingent here in Denver, so I can’t ask my Fenway seatmate to confirm.

Here I’m between the Canadian press (four strong) to my left and, again, Haudricourt and The Commish (Hummel) to my right.

By ssiscribe

October 27, 2007 9:43 PM | Link to this

So Dice-K is driving in runs at the plate? Game over. Series over. Drive home safely, see all of you in spring training.

Seriously, the Red Sox are sick good. Top to bottom of lineup, defensively, pitching, bullpen. Tonight, they’ve got Youk on the bench. Incredible, how strong they are.

I hate it for the good people of Denver, who will never forget this night and the first World Series game in Colorado, but it’s time to walk the dog. If this was a fight, it would be stopped by now.

Now, for other matters of conversation:

Barbecue: FINALLY made it to Fox Bros today. Took my double-play combination downtown for a while today, then we went out to the DeKalb Ave. restaurant (think the boys are a bit young to get into the one at Smith’s). Sat outside, watched the MARTA trains fly by and enjoyed the beautiful fall weather in the capital city.

Meat was very good. Loved the sauce. Stew was not good. Fries and mac and cheese were good. I’d definitely go there again, but it wasn’t the best in the world. Hudson’s in my hometown, Johnny’s up in Gainesville and a slew of places down along the coast are better.

But Fox Bros was good, too. I’ll definitely go there again.

Now, football: Glad to see the Dogs get it done down in J’Ville. I imagine the beer is flowing through the village down on the SSI pretty heavy tonight, and will do so until the middle of the night.

Tailback U. has found its next big star. Moreno was a man tonight. Loved the passion the Dogs showed; the celebration penalty after the first touchdown set the tone.

Alright … 6-0 in the third and I gotta teach in the morning. I’m leaving it with y’all. DOB, enjoy Denver … you’ll be eating Fox Bros. Monday night at the rate this is going.

And agree 100 percent on Giles. Good dude, really good player when he was here. Braves look like geniuses for not offering him last offseason. Hope he bounces back for somebody.

Selah.

The Scribe abides.

Lew, last year I went through the same exercise trying to find the Traveling Wilbury’s. Finally got them on ebay of all places. Great stuff.

Maybe Dice-K and other Sox were winded from running bases? Could that have been Fogg strategy?

It didn’t take all that “continuing education” I accumulated last week in West Palm Beach to figure it out.

He leaves the Braves in October looking a little like John Kruk and came back in Feb. looking like Jose Canseco.

DOB, I thought Manny was out. It looked like he was tagged on the hip before he reached down with his hand. At this point, it’s probably a moot point… but you never know… it is Coors Field.

Carolina Lady, I’ve known Hubby since I met him at at Braves fantasy camp back in the early 90’s. He is one heck of a baseball coach and more importantly, one top shelf individual.

I’m getting a bit tired of seeing World Series sweeps. This is getting absurd….

By the way, couple of us were just discussing how the Mets should be ashamed of themselves, that they couldn’t get here and at least represent the NL better than this in the World Series….

Scribe, our food critic at the paper said the food at the new Fox Bros. restaurant (the one you went to) wasn’t as good as the stuff they’ve been serving at Smith’s the past couple years, and also said the same thing you did about the stew.

I’ve just had the pulled-pork sandwich and tater tots, countless times, and it’s always been outstanding. But always at Smith’s. Haven’t been to the restaurant yet.

You been to Daddy D’z BBQ Joint on Memorial Drive, not far from Turner Field? Go there. It’s a tin-roof dive, but rated best Q in the city and appeared on The Food Network for their ribs.

Fogg is, I believe, a free agent after the season. I wonder if that 4.79 ERA would go much lower in somewhere like Turner Field or another more pitching friendly park? His WHIP was a bit high at 1.5 and he walks too many, but maybe as mid-rotation guy? What’s everyone’s thoughts here? I’m not advocating his acquisition, but it is a weak free agent class and maybe he won’t be too expensive.

DOB-I’ll definitely give a review of the Cult’s newest. I would have listened to it already, but got home after the Georgia game had started (GO DAWGS!!!!!!) and then this game began. Maybe later tonight or in the morning.

As for the little twerp I see you all got yourselves into an uproar about yesterday, all that really needs to be said about it and its ilk is:

Booked our flights to Toronto for the Braves-Jays series next June. I’ve never been to Toronto, but I hear it’s a nice place. Got to see the Braves somewhere next year. They aren’t playing in Boston in 08. Toronto’s not too much further. Cost me a whole $99 for the plane ticket. Sure beats a trip to Philadelphia or New York.

Keylargo, let’s put it this way: If Paul Byrd was on the stuff, they are all on the stuff. It is almost professionally negligent for them not to be on the stuff. At this point, Mitchell should just release a report of those too stupid and negligent not to be using steroids. The biggest problem of Marcus Giles is that after drug testing started, he and his brother were too stupid to find another connection to get around the testing. Jason Giambi dropped off the face of the earth but then came roaring back…… hmmmmmmm. Jeff Bagwell is a monster. Drug testing starts. He’s out of the game by the end of the next season. Hmmmmmmmm…. Sammy Sosa drops off the face of the earth once testing starts….. no one signs him…. he disappears somewhere ….. comes back and is hitting again …… hmmmm…. wonder what he was up to once he was no longer subjected to drug testing during his year off…

Yes, I mean it. I really do. I know that might not be the consensus now, but I think Tulowitzki’s the best defensively. I am sad though to hear what has happened to Marcus Giles. He is a big reason I became a Braves fan so quickly upon moving here. The day he hit that grand slam homer to win a game during his rookie year was the very day I moved to Atlanta. He got sent down to the minors the next day - which only further piqued my interest in him. Following him and his ups and downs led me to becoming a Braves fan and a lover of the rest of the players. I was angry when they did not bring him back …. one of the best moves ever made …. imagine having two black holes in the lineup with Andruw and Giles this year?

Lenny Dykstra was an all out a…-well you fill in the adjective yourself-anything majorly negative will suffice.

Most others have been pretty nice. In particular, Darren Holmes is a great guy, as is Blaine Boyer, who I had occasion to talk with for some time. Matt Belisle also is an exceptionally nice kid. I liked Matt Franco when I met him, too and also Mark Lemke.

DOB—what do you think it take for the Braves to get Santana?

By David O'Brien

October 27, 2007 11:14 PM | Link to this

Just when Hawpe was finally getting a hit to drive in a run, South Carolina kicked a 49-yard field goal to take a 24-21 lead over the Vols. After being down 21-0 at halftime. Wow…

Look at the ROCKIES, another hit off Lopez. Gotta hand it to these fans — they are ALL still here, and waving those white towels and making a lot of noise. (But the white towels, someone needs to stop that. It’s just too common now, too many teams doing it, more teams doing it than aren’t doing it).

By Braveheart

October 27, 2007 11:16 PM | Link to this

and another run by the rockies. here we go. got to 100 pitches or so off gyro guy and now it is time to pound the pen. the clock is ticking though. gotta get ‘em before papelbon gets in there. okijama will get pounded tonight i think. Timlin is tough though but he can be had too. the Red Sox nation needs be humbled. Being up 6-0 with Gyro on the mound thinking they were gonna go up 3-0 and sweep and then have it slip out of their hands altogether would be just what the doctor ordered. The Red Sox are like the Mets to me. I don’t so much hate their players but I absolutely hate their fans.

By Braveheart

October 27, 2007 11:26 PM | Link to this

I guess that is what Shaun would label luck. Two well hit balls that became outs. Others might say the skill of Ellsbury and Lugo made those outs.

Whatever the case may be, Timling was lucky because both of those outs were crushed.

Semiballcoach, whoever gets Santana is going to have to give up plenty of young talent if he’s traded this winter, and THEN is going to have to give him at least, say, six years and $120 million to re-sign him as a free agent. Some folks even believe he’ll get seven years, $150 mill.

He is, after all, only 29.

Speculation is that the Mets would offer Milledge and Humber of Pelfrey, and that the Yankees might offer Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy, plus another prospect.

In other words, it’d cost the Braves A LOT to get him, and A LOT to keep him.

By Savannah Guy

Fuentes? Man that kid blows everything.

By David O'Brien

October 28, 2007 12:14 AM | Link to this

Just a huge mistake by Fuentes to walk Lugo in front of no-stick Crisp. Then Crisp gets that dink hit barely over second base, and we’re off to the races with the back-to-back doubles. Now, we can say with conviction, this game’s over.

And those two rookies at the top of the lineup? Seven hits and four RBIs in this game.

By Braveheart

October 28, 2007 12:15 AM | Link to this

Don’t know what I saw in Okajima especially after the other night. But I saw him in a few games against the Yankees at the end of the year and he was shaky. And he had a 6.24 ERA during the last two months of the regular season, including a 7.27 ERA in his last 15 appearances. It’s a little misleading though because he gave up the majority of those runs in two appearances against the Yankees. In one inning over those two appearances he gave up 7 earned runs. So, I just had a funny feeling based upon seeing that.

But, as it turns out, after the homer and the hit by Helton he got himself out of that jam. But that homer alone was enough.

Isn’t it about time for Papelbon to choke one up now?

This series and game has turned really fun all of a sudden.

Hawpe just pulled a Jermaine Dye.

Ron Paul? Rakim sez Eric B. Is President. You can even ask the Amazing Kreskin :o>

I came in the door, i said it before I never let the mic magnatize me no more But it’s biting me, fighting me, inviting me to rhyme I can’t hold it back, I’m looking for the line, Taking off my coat, clearing my throat My rhyme will be kicking it until I hit my last note My mind’ll range to find all kinds of ideas Self-esteem makes it seem like a thought took years to build But still say a rhyme after the next one Prepared, never scared, I’ll just bless one And you know that I’m the soloist So Eric B, make ‘em clap to this

I don’t bug out or chill or be acting ill No tricks in ‘86, it’s time to build Eric B easy on the cut, no mistakes allowed Cuz to me, MC means move the crowd I made it easy to dance to this But can you detect what’s coming next from the flex of the wrist Saying indeed that I precede cuz my man made a mix If he bleed he won’t need no band-aid to fix If they can get some around until there’s no rhymes left I hurry up because the cut will make ‘em bleed to death But he’s kicking it because it ain’t no half stepping The party is live, the rhyme can’t be kept in- Side, it needs erupting just like a volcano It ain’t the everyday style of the same old rhyme Because I’m better then the rest of them Eric B is on the cut and my name is Rakim

Go get a girl and get soft and warm, Don’t get excited, you’ve been invited to a quiet storm But now it’s out of hand cuz you told me you hate me And then you ask what have I done lately First you said all you want is love and affection Let me be your angel and I’ll be your protection Take you out, buy you all kinds of things I must of got you too hot and burned off your wings You caught an attitude, you need food to eat up I’m scheming like I’m dreaming on a couch wit my feet up You scream I’m lazy, you must be crazy Thought I was a donut, you tried to glaze me

Theo Epstein is only 33 and is about to win his second World Series. So all of you old ba$tards back off of me.

Clutch steal of third by Lowell. He is a gamer. Just a baseball player. A former juicer I believe as well. But I think he is clean now and just back to being a good baseball player regardless. Again, wild speculation on my part. But that was a real smart clutch steal of third. So important. They will never score 5 runs off Papelbon.

Lot’s of joy tonight in Lawrence, Athens, Knoxville, Starkville, Columbus and Boston.

DOB, that second half was brutal to watch. UT is very Jeckyl and Hyde with both the O-line and the front seven. Missed tackles and listless performances in the second half and it took a missed field goal in OT by SC to get them off the hook.

It’s been a really great story for baseball, these resurgent Rockies of 2007. There will be those that point to the layoff between the end of the NLCS and the beginning of the World Series, however I think Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling and Dice-K had a lot to do with the outcome through the first three games.

Well two games and 9 2/3. Hawpe really hammered the ball into the RF corner for a triple.

Braveheart, Lowell was never a juicer. If you ever saw him without a shirt, yhou’d believe me. He’s hardly got what you’d call a sculpted body. Never has.

But you’re right, a very good, smart ballplayer. Pure “baseball player,” as opposed to just an athlete playing baseball.

By the way, that’s all I heard about Lillibridge when I’d ask Braves people about him last spring training, “Kid’s a baseball player.”

I think the Red Sox would be a legit “evil empire” if they had Steinbrenner at the helm. John Henry is the epitome of milquetoast. Larry Lucchino is evil, but most fans have no idea who he is. Theo Epstein looks like the type of guy that would steal your girlfriend, so I guess he’s kinda evil. A fading Curt Schilling is really the closest thing to a truly hateable player on the team. It’s my belief that the people that genuinely do hate the Red Sox are 1) those who don’t like the pink-hat, green T-shirt-wearing bandwagon fans that have been around since ‘04 (a legitimate reason not to like a team, I might add), and 2) Yankee fans.

Teams that have taken a 3-0 lead in the World Series have won the series all 22 times, and swept 19 times.

And now the Rockies will turn to a starting pitcher who hasn’t pitched in a major league game in 10 weeks or so.

DOB Thanks for clearing that up for me about Lowell. What can the NL do to reach parity with the AL? Do we have to adopt the DH and ugly AL-style ball? If that happens, I think the game has lost a lifelong fan. But let’s face it: The AL is superior. DOB, pretty depressing night here. It was still fun while it lasted, though.

Why do you say 50 is balmy here, though? It really isn’t; not judging by how people were bundled up in 40 degree weather. I remember a couple W.S. games in ATL that were in the 40s too.

Too bad you weren’t here Thursday; it was 80. Well at least it’ll be in the 70’s Sunday and Monday (you should stay til Tuesday, even if they do get swept).

P.S. So much for a snowy World Series…

Top of the morning, denizens. The bad news is I missed the big swing in momentum in lat night’s game by bailing out and going to sleep.

The good news is I got nearly eight hours of sleep, and the outcome still ended up as expected.

As I opined last night, this World Series is over. The Rockies are finished. Dare we say the Red Sawx, cursed for most of a century, will enter next season looking to win their third title in five years and establish themselves as the new dynasty in baseball?

Wow.

I only watched the BoSox play a handful of times this season (once was in person, when the Bravos pounded Schilling in the opener of the three-game series at home). But this is a perfectly assembled baseball team. Case in point: the lack of production from Manny and Papi last night, and still the BoSox scored 10 runs. Has nothing to do with thin air in Denver, and everything to do with a lineup constructed to be successful.

Guys get on base. Guys hit behind runners. Guys make contact. Those rookies at the top are really impressive. So, too, is the bullpen, the starting rotation … all hail the champions of the baseball world for 2007.

Now, barbecue: DOB, no I have not been to Daddy D’z but I have heard it’s unbelievably good. May have to do that the next time I’m downtown and needing some good cue. May be a while before I do that, though. After barbecue for lunch, chicken strips and fries for a late dinner during the game, and a milkshake in between, the Scribe is a little heavier on the scale this morning than I’ve been in a while.

Couldn’t help but think, as I got off the interstate at Turner Field yesterday and drove up Capitol Avenue, what a grand night for baseball it would’ve been in the capital city. Maybe next year, denizens. Maybe next year.

Time to get ready to teach the little ones this morning. This Series, and this season, end tonight, then we can start the countdown to the Glavine homecoming.

Selah, denizens.

The Scribe abides.

As a rule of thumb, bad things can happen when you use a Twisted Sister song for the purpose of rallying.

Yes, a most serious bad-karma generator, if ever there was one. Best line on the blog last night (at the risk of a sucking-up accusation).

I would have loved to have seen this year’s Braves squad up against these Bosox. Yes, even with the sucky back of the rotation. I’d have taken my chances with Hudson vs. Beckett and Smoltz vs. Schilling. And I think the Braves would have hurt Matsuzaka. Could have been fun to watch.

There shouldn’t be any concern about AL superiority; it’s just another of baseball’s innumerable cycles. Just a perception, but I think there’s a lot more young talent in the NL. A little more experience and a little more maturity, and the NL fortunes will swing, I think.

Rockies just used up too much magic merely to make the stage, I guess. You can’t win out the last two weeks, force and win a play-in game, and rip through two playoff series without burning up some karma. Too bad, since many will remember only the failure in the WS and not the performance that got them there.

Oh, well. Bring in an arm-load from the woodpile, and load the stove. Let’s get to it.

Good morning all, Yep, I cashed in early last night. I may stay up late to watch the Braves play teams on the left coast but not the BoSox and Rookies…

AL vs NL…. It will come around, always has, always will….. Just let me find an American League team to root for and they are sure to tank.

Yes, the SEC is tough. Some of the hardest schools to graduate from I hear. :-))) That’s okay though, they will make a lot more money than many of the graduates, they will have to hire a posse’ and guard dogs and… oops.. My bad, somebody already tried that.

I noticed the VT and Miami are not doing as well since that began requiring their prospective player to submit a rap sheet along with their transcripts and SATs.

And again, you guys are going to love Lillibridge when he gets to the bigs. Great D and a clutch hitter. Reminds me of Mark Lempke in the clutch hitting department. Still think he might be Craig Biggio’s long lost son.

How the hell has Urban Myer lost 3 games with what I still think is the best team in the country? Richt and his Dawgs showed me alot of toughness and fight yesterday. But mostly it was Knowshon. He is the one thing this team has been desperately missing since 2004. Knowshon is the offensive equivalent of David Pollack. The little engines that could keep going and going and going. The Dawgs D bullied Tebow and Urban Myer. That was the worst I have ever seen Tebow play. It almost looked like Willie and his boys decided to let Harvin do whatever he wanted on the edges because they were gonna blitz the hell out of Tebow right up the middle and smack him and smack him and smack him.

Greatest moment yesterday: Tebow looking defeated on the ground on that bad snap and Urban Myer firing his headset to the ground. Classic!

All that money spent by the Bosox and it really comes down to their homegrowns: Ellsbury, Pedroia, and Papelbon.

IF you look at their lineup, you realize it ain’t really just a matter of overpaying at all. Varitek was a shrewd deadline trade. Ortiz was one of the smartest free agent signing there ever was. No one thought he was this good. Youk was a homegrown. Pedroia is homegrown. Lugo was an overpriced free agent. Lowell is overpriced (kind of but not really). But Lowell was a shrewd throw in to that Beckett for Hanley and Annibal trade. Don’t know how much choice they had in taking Lowell or not though. Manny was a huge free agent signing and they are nowhere without him and he should still be playing in Cleveland. Crisp is overpriced. Ellsbury is underpaid. Drew is overpaid - they never should have signed him for that money. But Drew is the sabermetric wet dream. I think J.D. will have a monster year or two in the next few for Boston. He has bought himself some forgiveness from Bosox fans with some of his moments this postseason. Might make it easier for him to perform.

The problem is that their starting pitchers are not theirs. Schilling, Beckett, and Dice K. That’s an unfair advantage to be able to buy yourself aces when other teams can’t.

Gil, I agree with you on the AL vs. NL: It will come around eventually. It’s cyclical, and the cycles in this thing have been decades-long cycles, when the NL was dominant and when the AL’s been dominant.

However, it’s a bit hard for me to believe when folks say the World Series is a total mismatch every year these days because the AL is so much better. Sorry, but you can’t just dismiss results — D-Backs won in 2001, Marlins won in 2003, and Cardinals won in 2006. When Boston wins this series, AL will be 4-3 in the last seven World Series.

Tough to get too worked up with concern over that record of so-called NL “futility”….

Braveheart, I might have agreed with you on Florida before yesterday. Might have. But not now. Florida’s not the best team in the country. No way. Not better than Ohio State, not better than West Virginia, for starters….

Let me start this by stressing that I’m not saying the SEC isn’t the deepest conference (it is). Just so we’re clear.

But just for this season, judging it against the rest of the power conferences, curious what SEC proponents use to make the claim that it’s clearly the best conference. Again, just talking about this season.

It seems the only way you can judge that is by head-to-head games against teams from the other power conferences, right?

How has the SEC done in those games? What impressive wins does it have against teams from other conferences THIS season?

Seems to me, there have been more losses than wins in the limited games its elite schools have played against teams from other conferences. I could be wrong, but this season it just seems like there haven’t been many big wins outside the conference.

Oh, and they did have little cheddar and swiss cheese squares in the pressbox dining room, along with vegetable sticks, to go with the more-typical array of typical sportswriter grub including chips, cookies, candy, and shelled peanuts.

It was all gone, and i mean every last M&M and every cheese square, by the fourth inning.

DOB-I never said the SEC was wallowing in a blaze of Glory this season. I said that things had returned somewhat to normal. We beat Florida. You’re right. The SEC is not as powerful this season as last-or as is customary. We ARE the best conference in college football-most of the time-we don’t win National Titles as often because we tend to knock off each other all the time. Look at all the losses by the top SEC teams, on an annual basis and look how many of those losses are intraconference. Everyone’s allowed an off season occasionally (except Andruw Jones, of course). You’re just pumped up because those boys from Lawrence finally turned in a decent campaign. Well hell, DOB, everyone has a decent season-sometimes. Stranger things have happened than those Jayhawks actually having a winning football season once every ten or twelve years or so. It’s probably analogous to KU having a losing season in hoops every decade or three. Me? I’m just thrilled we beat those Damned Reptiles. I only wish we had beaten Spurrier, too.

Esteemed Journalist-Grinch is staying with me in Orlando, so he’ll be pretty easy to find. FlBravesGirl and Scribe will likely meet us in Clearwater at the Phillies complex. As for everyone else, I don’t even know who will be there. I will probably be in the stands by the Braves’ dugout. I’m easy to find. I’ll have a portfolio of artwork and a guy who looks like a Cave Bear hanging out somewhere in the vicinity. I don’t know about miniature golf, but it is Disney-Goofy is all over the flipping place.

Lew, my man, I wasn’t even referring to your comment about the ‘Dawgs (I was as happy to see that win as you were).

I was referring to a couple of earlier posts from others about the SEC.

And believe me, I would not even begin to suggest KU could compete in football in the SEC. Maybe this year, but that’s a once-a-decade (if that) thing.

KU’s a basketball school. If KU were in the SEC, it’d be much like UK (Kentucky) is in the SEC — but perhaps a little better in basketball and a little worse in football, on a regular basis.

As for national champions, don’t the Big 10 schools beat up on each other, Lew? Maybe not as much in recent years, but there have been many seasons when the Big 10 was absolutely loaded.

You gonna let your ‘Dawgs off the hook that easily for not winning national titles?

I know us KU alums aren’t satisfied with the basketball team winning Big 12 titles and advancing to a bunch of Final Fours since last winning a national championship in 1988.

If you’ve got the best team, you can win national titles out of any football conference. Just look at the Gators. They had the best teams and won it all.

But I do agree, the SEC is obviously the best football conference, year-in and year-out. Just haven’t been overly impressed this season.

Not after I see things like Cal easily handling the Vols and a mediocre Kansas State team nearly winning at Auburn, then see those same SEC teams compete consistently (and win in many cases) in games against the best teams in their conference.

I mean, I know that’s not the most scientific way to judge it, but how else can you except in head-to-head competition? And, by the way, Auburn and Tennessee played K-State and Cal early on, before they would’ve been “beaten up” by the SEC schedule.

(Granted, this isn’t exactly a banner year for Tennessee, so probably shouldn’t make much of their loss at Cal, which is a very good team. But K-State at Auburn …)

Oh, and I didn’t even mention a very mediocre FSU beating ‘Bama, or possibly overhyped USF beating Auburn….

But just for this season, judging it against the rest of the power conferences, curious what SEC proponents use to make the claim that it’s clearly the best conference.

Dammit, Yankee! Go home! SEC cynicism is not permitted. Planes are leaving Hartsfield back to the Northeast every hour. Oh, what’s that? I’m actually the damn Yankee transplant. Whatever. I quickly learned that if I am gonna live here I must repeat and fully believe the mantra that there is the SEC and no other. You guys apparently still got some work to do in your brainwashing of DOB. He’s still too independent minded.

The SEC is sort of down this year in that there is no dominant team. Florida and LSU have the most talented teams but LSU has a dunce for a coach. I can’t put my finger on what is wrong with Florida but I think it might have something to do with Tebow being a ballhog. It’s kind of like basketball. When so much of the offense is dependent upon one person, it actually makes the offense very limited.

Measuring the SEC is kind of like measuring baseball. You need the Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cardinals, Braves, Mets to be doing something big in the postseason. When Tennessee or Florida are down, we are all extremely happy but the reputation of the SEC takes a hit. The rest of the country never fully believes in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas and they laugh at Vandy, the Mississippi schools, and Tucky.

But how the heck does Auburn lose to South Florida but then beat Florida?

Did Chris Mortenson and Chris Berman just mention Warren Zevon? Berman and Mortenson reads DOB’s blog I guess.

DOB-I have a very good friend- a former Mercer classmate-that got her PhD from KU and still lives in Lawrence with her husband after teaching there for twenty years or so. There is no finer school for Hoops, year in year out. Yet they don’t win the National Championship year in year out. Not even Duke does. Or Kentucky. Or anyone, for that matter.

Winning National Championships is not even analogous to winning World Series Titles. You’re dealing with 30 teams as opposed to over 100. You also have to deal with an extremely fickle system of rankings (anything that involves Journalists is ALWAYS suspect-heh, heh). Sure I wish Georgia had won more Championships. I also cheered for Ohio State last year against the Gators-such is SEC rivalry.

However, I feel extremely fortunate to have attended every home game during the Dawgs Championship run in 1980 and to have attended every home game of Herschel Walker’s career at UGA. Sometimes, that’s what you have to take out of the college athletic experience. Maybe it hasn’t been dynasty times in Athens, but how many people can make the claim I just did about THEIR alma mater? National Titles are nice. World Series Titles are nice. However, it’s really love of the respective sport and your own beloved team that makes for a great life’s experience. Georgia has a solid, winning team on an annual basis. Like the Braves, all I ask for is a chance for a good showing. I’ll love my Braves and Dawgs (and Bucs, for that matter) and you’ll continue to love your Jayhawks. Renegator will continue to love the (ugh!) Gators and Journalist Bob his YellowJackets, no matter how delusional any of us may be. That is truly the way it should be. Sometimes, if you’re REALLY lucky, you’ll see them at the top of the heap. Most of the time-maybe not so much.

Lew, why are you giving me a lecture on appreciation of college sports?

I couldn’t be more proud of my alma mater and couldn’t have better memories than I do from my time at KU, including the national title won in 1988, two years after I graduated but while I was still working close enough to Lawrence to watch the title game in a dive bar Louise’s West in Lawrence with my buddies who were on the six-year college plan, then going up on campus to celebrate with thousands of others afterward.

But that doesn’t mean I and other alums can’t be disappointed to come so close so many times since (but I guess the ‘Dawgs probably haven’t come the equivelent of Final Four-close in football numerous times since their title, huh?).

Anyway, the whole debate was about the SEC, and it wasn’t anything more than a discussion. No need to lecture me on how to appreciate college sports and your pro or college team’s successes….

Balanced conferences make for better football, baseball, basketball etc. Only the snobs, illiterates and short sighted alum think having one strong team and a bunch of dwarfs makes national champions. So much is given to wins and losses and not the reality that a number 6 in a strong conference could whip the poop out of a supposed number one with a weak schedule.

If division two can have a play off then I can’t see why the big boys can’t do the same. Only reason is because the rich teams do not want to share the wealth. All that TV money can cloud the thinking of a lot of folks.

My university (VCU) does not field a football team so I don’t get too fired up about football. I spent one year each at UVA and Va Tech so what can I say? Tyler I think the Braves are best served by hanging onto Lillibridge. It would really take a lot for me to want to part with him. Not another guy with arm trouble. I think sick bay is already full.

GIL - You make a good point about Bedard and the sick bay boys. However, in my mind it all depends on how much the Braves have to give up. Lillibridge is a keeper in that situation but Thorman, I’d say adios. Maybe add Prado or Blanco. Sure, Bedard could be another Wood or Prior but, if he recovers, you’ve really got something special. I’d take the chance.

Toughest Conference in the country when it comes to football , that would be the SEC. Check the polls , seven teams ranked. The Southeastern Conference consistently puts six teams in a bowl game. It will have a half dozen teams ranked at the beginning and end of the football season. It has long had a reputation as the one conference in the country that stands above the rest. It’s a twelve team Conference with seven ranked in the top 25. Nine teams got votes in the polling system. It is a brutal football Conference where teams just pound on each other within the SEC. Being from the south , I’m biased , I know. But when Florida/Georgia hook up , these two states come to a screeching halt for football. Georgia/Georgia Tech is even bigger. The Alabama/Auburn Iron bowl is arguably the biggest football rivalry in America , going all the way back to 1893. Sports Illustrated has the rivalry rated the second biggest in sports behind the Yankees/Red Sox. As far as I am concerned , the Southeastern Conference rules supreme in the College football world.

I do realize Bedard is a risk and we have enough of that. But if we didn’t give up Escobar or Lillbridge or one Rohrbough, Hanson, or Medlen, then I’d say do it. That won’t be likely though.

Maybe a trade involving some of Thorman, Prado, B.Jones (He’d be the centerpiece), and Devine for him? I’m still iffy.

Afternoon gang…

When Tennessee or Florida are down, we are all extremely happy but the reputation of the SEC takes a hit.

Not all of us are happy in that situation Braveheart… :-)

Interesting SEC conversation going on at the Braves/MIB blog. DOB, you’re correct. Cal handled Tennessee in Berkeley very easily. Add to that the fact that UT looked silly against Florida and Alabama and during the second half against SC last night.

Everyone in the conference has looked mortal at times this year, so it does make sense to me that many would view this as a little bit of a down year, however I still believe year in and year out, this is top to bottom the most competitive conference in the country.

College football brings out strong loyalties to schools and their conferences like nothing else I’ve ever seen. It’s kind of like growing up with siblings. Sure, we can pick on each other day in and day out, but don’t let anyone else outside of the family (or the conference so to speak) do that.

It makes fall Saturdays fun to say the least.

DOB-Travel schedule must be getting to you, Oh Notorious One. I wasn’t lecturing you or anyone else. I was explaining my feelings. Do you feel an unfulfilled need to be lectured? Sorry if that didn’t sit well with you, Dude. Seems to me that you were the one that came down on our beloved SEC in one of your posts. I was just talking a bit of smack with you-which is exactly what I thought you were doing. Fine. No problem. I figured you were already a college fan. In fact, I never doubted it for a second. It’s just that fans of mid west teams blogging on a Southern newspaper’s blog (even if it is THEIR blog) should realize that there are lots of rabid SEC fans in attendance (and we’re as rabid as a college fan can get) and we may have a comment on the perception that our beloved SEC has fallen off for a season. Not being contentious Abiding One. I NEVER do that now, do I?

It’s the jet lag, partying, late night eating that is affect him Lew. Can’t blame him for being true to his school. Even when you are not taking a shot at him. VCU by the way is a very good baseball school. I think that is because there is not the same type of competition for scholarships as football and basketball. A lot of kids get partial scholarships rather than full rides. Most stay the full four years too.

I read my new issue of Chop Talk last night. They always have a column by JS and one by BC. In this month’s column, Cox talked about the rotation and prominently mentioned that JoJo Reyes would be in it this year. He sees Reyes as a number two pitcher (though maybe not quite yet). Read it and weep, y’all- JoJo ain’t going back to Richmond. He says it in so many words. Looks like y’all had better factor him into your speculations for the coming season’s roytation. Bobby does.

I was only saying what MY feelings were and didn’t mean to intimate that he shouldn’t be or wasn’t justifiably proud of HIS alma mater. No problem though. I’m a big boy and he’s still my friend, as I hope I am his, as well.

Maybe he shouldn’t have those coffee drinking contests with the Japanese, though. It’s not good for your digestion and can cause distress when combined with extensive travel.

I want to join in on this Kansas talk. First of all, as a testament to the popularity of this blog, I find myself cheering for Kansas in football simply because I feel like a know a Kansas almunus due to this blog. How else would talk of Kansas make it onto an Atlanta Braves blog, especially when not originated by the Kansas alum himself.

You should enjoy the Big XII champion teams and Final Four teams. It is also OK and understandable to be diasppointed in some of those great teams that did not win it all. If anything, Kansas is a good example of how hard it is to win an NCAA championship in basketball (and a good example of how hard it would be to win a title in football with a playoff tournament).

The only thing negative I could say about Kansas is their sour grapes attitude towards Roy Williams. He is nothing but classy. He took a program on probation and rebuilt Kansas (of course Kansas has a storied basketball history) into one of the top 5 basketball schools in the country - year in and year out - and that continues today. Yes Roy should have won a few titles at Kansas but Roy was a great coach for Kansas.

I was really disappointed to see the Roy bashing when Roy left for UNC. The man came home to his alma mater for the end of his career to be closer to his family (his children and his dying sister). He never has said one bad thing about Kansas. He turned down the UNC job once and still refers to himself as a Jayheel or Tarhawk. He did great things at Kansas and I am disappointed Kansas acted the way they did when he left. From another point of view, he built Kansas into a perennial top team but could not get over the hump and win the title so it would not be a leap to say he took Kansas as far as he could but Kansas needs someone else to take them over the top.

FYI - I am an alumnus of a different school on tobacco road, not UNC. I also enjoyed every moment of Wake taking it to UNC yesterday.

Final Edition of The Daily Buzz Mutant Origin Chronicles

(posted at the end of last blog for your convenience)

Due to consideration of leaving plenty of space for the World Series conversations and a serious lack of brevity of the cyberpulp interview publisher, the final chapter in the Ken Burns “Fly Mutant Origin” has been posted at the end of the last Blog. You can thank the publisher now for not being forced to scroll past it, or after you’ve gone back in time and read it yourself.

For those that are gluttons for punishment, I’ll say, during the interviews things got a little rough. Due to the graphic nature of some events that occurred there, the names have not been changed to protect the guilty.

In all seriousness, thanks DOB for allowing your forum to be used for my own twisted personal enjoyment and for putting up with the nonsense with nary a pushback. Says a lot about you. Thanks denizens for you kudos, others for your Fly digs and brevity barbs (deserved). As for you others that never noticed Fly, thanks for your indifference to the whole silly thing and for not complaining at my eating up space that could have been put to better use with pure baseball talk.

It was fun for me…so I continued it to its illogical end. It certainly was never my intention to embarrass anyone or make anyone feel uncomfortable with the Fly barbs and occasional prods and pokes. Sometimes we jab the ones we love (other times we jab the ones that need a little jab)….kind of like keeping a friend or brother or sister straight. Truth is, my goal was simply to offer a lighthearted “fly on the wall perspective in an off the wall way” or perhaps nudge someone to consider a different way of thinking…or an attitude check. The whole thing was sincerely done in jest and fairness with no intent to be negative in any way. If I have offended you in any way…it may take time but , relax…you’ll get over it. : )

Lastly, if you just wish that stupid Fly (or his publisher/translator) would just go away…stand in line, uh…the rear is around the next corner. Hey, and if you think this epilogue is long…wait until you see the final interview. Sheesh.

Peace, blessings and good tidings fair denizens.

Still trying to make the case that everyone is out of step but the Stinky Boy. He may try to tell us otherwise, but The Telltale Stink Remains the Same (Poe/Zeppelin collarboration, right?)-doesn’t matter whether the name is-Crab Boy, Bubba, Stinky, Nostradum@$$, or whoever strikes his perverted fancy at any given time-same person, same warped sense of propriety, nonetheless. No adult could have as much hatred for other adults. But perhaps not a child. Perhaps just a marginalized adult. This bloke blames the world for his pathetic lot. A product of poor genes and raising. He tries to be normal. No one notices him when he pretends to be normal. So he acts like a jerk. Thinks himself to be witty. Has not posted anything original. He is merely a collector of information denizens regrettably used against each other in past fights. Imitating writing styles of others. Too stupid to develop any original material. Complains that he wants a baseball blog. But he never has any baseball thoughts. He used to try and still does under his true blog identity. But no one pays attention to the things he says about baseball. So he is angry. He lashes out. A truly sad little soul. He hates himself more than he hates the rest. Has not brushed his hair or teeth in several days. Lots of ear wax piling up in his ears. Ear hair as well. Not a pretty sight. Possibly an unibrow man. Tarzan could swing around on the jungle of nose hairs shooting out of his nostrils. Just finished playing XBox. Just went upstairs and asked his mother to make dinner. DOB, obviously depends on your definition but I think the Red Sox behave like we’d want our team to behave if they were a rich team (or like the Braves behaved when Ted Turner was the principal owner). They aren’t afraid to play rookies but they’ll go after what they need even if they have to overpay some or even if they have to take risks.

They have the likely 2007 ROY (Pedroia) and the early favorite for 2008 (Ellsbury) playing prominent roles on a team that finished with the best record in baseball and won the World Series. Also, for all the talk about the money they spend, quite a few of their key players are home grown or they were acquired while undervalued by other teams.

The DBI is now issuing a BOLO for TampaBrave. Many may remember Tampabrave. He was a whiny little jerk who would come on here and start fights all the time. Tampabrave frequently issued personal attacks against people. A pathetic little punk.

During the course of our investigation, the DBI noticed that a person named TampaGator posted on the Junkyard Blawg at 3:40 p.m and then again at 3:52 p.m.

Louie the Crab posted at 3:16, 3:27 and then was quiet until 4:08 on the DOB blog. Why? Because he was posting as TampaGator over on the Junkyard Blawg.

Not necessarily accusing Tampabrave. Just saying he is a “person of interest” in our continuing investigation.

Shaun Payne, I agree. Red Sox spend money but spend it wisely, while incorporating homegrown talent. They’re like Oakland with twice the payroll — and that’s all good for them and Red Sox Nation.

Lew, you’re making a bit much out of my reaction. And no, I’m quite used to the travel schedule.

Feel however you’d like about your school, brother. Me, I love the alma mater, contribute cash annually, love everything about the experience I had and following the teams since I graduated. But I don’t know a single hardcore KU fan who doesn’t hate that we haven’t won another national title since 1988, because we all believe the program is one of the top three in the country.

That’s all. We’ve got high expectations. Big 12 titles and Elite Eight appearances aren’t enough.

I commented earlier that “Calling an illegal alien an undocumented immigrant is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist

I didn’t see it but I’m told that the following response to that comment was deleted from the Blog.

Bob, you’d be better off if you would just accept the country you grew up in is not the current model … well, it’s true that I spent a lot of time in the country but I grew up in Atlanta.

However, while I can’t see how the comment is on point, attitudes have certainly changed … still, I can’t imagine being better off accepting it … sounds like the flawed Vichy French doctrine to me and I’m sure it’s endorsed by the unworthy who seek unopposed legitimacy for their agendas.

If you think that the direction in which we’re headed is good … with increased acceptance and legitimacy being given to such things homosexuality, pornography, and drug use … to entitlement rather than privilege … with boys and girls taking drugs and guns to school …

Well, if you don’t so think then I doubt that you think you’re better off accepting it … I don’t.

Methinks the problem is that we have been doing just that … accepting it. I too suggest we deal with it, but with rejection rather than acceptance.

Want a simple IQ test that you can give to anyone? Ask them to opine the 10 greatest people of all time … and, if you’re so inclined, why they so think. There’s nothing magic about the number 10 unless it’s the unexplained connection between it and tomatoes given to it by Doc’s sheep.

Knowledge, education and intelligence … three very loosely connected things.

David, David, David-Of course you love your Alma Mater. I never attacked the August Institution-even mentioned having Dear Friends who attended then taught there and still live in lovely Lawrence. I truly don’t understand your reaction, Abiding Dude. I was not lecturing you, merely stating how I felt about college athletics and sports in general. Nothing more, nothing less.

If it seemed I was talking smack, I apologize, I was merely having you on in a manner I thought was in keeping with friendly intercollegiate rivalry-again, nothing more and nothing less. Of course you’re proud of the great Hoops tradition at Kansas, just as I am of the football tradition of Good Ole UGA. This is what it’s all about, to my way of thinking.

I also realize that you are used to the travel and, again, was only having you on-must be my playful mood today-maybe it is out of character for me to practice playfullness. As you may well remember in the past, I have said numerous times that you don’t have an easy job and that the demands are rigorous, even if the rewards (going to the World Series and having coffee drinking contests with other Scribes) are excellent-I mean, I’ve never been to a WS game.

Was just about to get on to read the blog, and we got company, so four hours later… I guess I missed the mark pretty good with my Rockies win prediction for last night. When they rallied, I thought maybe, but…. That Ellsbury kid is some kind of player! Wish the Braves had someone like that hiding in the bushes. Now I’m pretty sure the Sox will finish it tonight….hate to see the season end though. Did enjoy reading the Notorious one’s on-site, insights.

Now a couple answers to the last blog

MR J I didn’t mean to open a whole can of worms on here, I was merely saying there was a survey taken, and what the results of that survey were. It was not my opinion. However, I grew up in Michigan, (right in the center of the Great Lakes) lower, and upper peninsulas, lived in Ohio for years, and now back in Michigan. I have relatives in Indiana, Wisconsin, and no one speaks with that Fargo type accent. But in northern Minn, there are some remnants of their northern Europe ancestry. (As Coach reminds me.) A section in Chicago, and one in Detroit, also, some people have a strong polish influence, but most of the accent has disappeared except in the older generation. But I don’t think those are regarded as “regional accents”, since they were carried over from the old country. I can’t speak for the Dakotas, or other central states. I do know that Pennsylvania does have a regional accent, (but that is more of an Eastern state) and of course anything below the Mason-Dixon line, you all know more about than me. I have never heard of a Lake accent, but would be very interested in reading about it, if you could point me to an article. :>)

Coach Congratulations! Keep it up!

Some buddies and I are headed down to The Sports Column down on Blake St. in a little bit; we’ve been cooking out all day and watching football. The atmosphere in LoDo last night was electric, even though they lost.

It’s too bad the Braves can’t be seen on TV in Florida anymore, or that the Rays can’t establish a winning tradition to win over some fans.

Dunwoody in Denver, we had a BBWAA meeting at noon today at the ballpark, so didn’t get a chance to do anything outdoors other than walk across the street to Jackson Hole to eat lunch. Bunch of us hacks walked down to Sports Column, but it was too crowded to get a table for six. So we went to Jackson Hole.

Now at the ballpark working. And no, I’ve already made my flight at 7:45 a.m. tomorrow if the Rockies lose, bro. I ain’t sticking around. Want to go home, much as I love Colorado. If I’m not staying for a week of snowboarding, I don’t want to stay for one more day.

Lew, you again took my reaction the wrong way. i give up. Please understand this: I know you’re not taking umbrage with my school; I know that. I understand that. I never thought you were. I took “umbrage,” if that’s not too strong a word, with the condescending tone about appreciating a team, pro or college, for its successes even if it didn’t win a title, etc.

Sorry, but just don’t need to be told how to feel about a team, or how to appreciate things as a fan. No one does. You appreciate it the way you want. I merely said we — me and most fellow KU alums I know — seem a little more demanding, or less satisfied, with winning Big 12 titles or falling a win shy of the Final Four, and not winning at least one title per decade, than you are with your particular team’s record of postseason success.

Got it? Never said a word insinuating I thought you were being critical of KU (and if you were, I really wouldn’t give a rat’s butt, and I mean that), and NEVER mentioned anything today about the demands of my job or anything else, so please don’t drag that crap into the blog so a few folks can take shots for no reason whatsoever at the insinuation that I’m complaining, just because they read your comments.

I have no complaints (well, not any you need to hear) about my job, don’t ask for your sympathy of the demands of the job, your view of the perks, nothing. Everyone here has brutal parts of their jobs, and I hope everyone here has plenty about their jobs they love. But you really don’t need to comment on mine when I didn’t say a word about it (remember, you started by making the little comment about how maybe the travel had me on edge. No, it doesn’t. So don’t bring it up).

Bob, Journalist: Sorry if your post got deleted. I really don’t know why or how it did, if it did.

I can honestly say I just read your most recent post, and I have no idea what you’re talking about. Honestly.

Were you saying you are for pornography or against it? For the French or against them? For gun control or against? Please, Bob, it’s important that you lay all this on us in this forum, because God knows this is the best place for it. And we’re all in need of being led by the hand and molded into the kind of people you want us to be.

We’re not here just to talk baseball, BBQ, music and what-have-you. We need moral guidance and political opinions from you. Because you know how smooth the dialogue would go if we all started espousing our views on all the subjects you brought up.

But no, you’re apparently above all that, and you believe your views must be heard on the matter, must be heard on the blog here, in a space where I’ve only asked that folks refrain from talking politics or making personal attacks on others. I know, those are really big demands.

Obviously the unnamed guy who keeps getting banned can’t abide by the second of those requests, simply can’t post without taking shots at everyone.

Can you abide by the first, and keep your political views, plus your views on everyone’s personal lifestyle choices, to yourself? Just curious.

Just finished listening to the new Cult and the Jason Isbell CD’s. We definitely have agreement on both of them. The Cult’s is much better than anything in many years and does capture a good bit of the manic intensity of the Electric CD, in particular. I do wish they had been able to get Matt Sorum on drums, though. The guy they have is adequate, but way too basic.

The Isbell may take some further introspection. There is much more to it, both lyrically and musically than the Cult CD, which is just straight ahead hard rock for the most part. It is much more intricate, though no less enjoyable. I noticed that he thanked the DBT’s in his liner notes, so I imagine it was a pleasant parting of the ways? Hope so, they teamed well together-sum of the parts and whatnot.

DOB-Also, thanks for proving to the Misanthrope that I’m not the Blog’s Golden Child. Believe me, I never meant to soil your shoes. I’ll be more careful in the future. Consider me put in my place.

I am rooting for the sweep tonight. No sense in delaying the inevitable. Just hoping we don’t have to see Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon on the field this time.

Chocolate/peanut butter pie for everyone.

Ron Paul, what’s wrong with your friend? Shelled peanuts are peanuts IN the shell.

That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it.

Bob, Journalist is without question the classiest man to ever post a comment on this blog, and he is also my friend…so for O’Brien to make the disrespectful comments that he just made to Bob is the absolute epitome of disrespect and crassness. Bob was merely replying to a comment made by another blogger, all the while, the trash and foolishness that is accepted and welcomed on this blog on a daily basis is unbelievable.

TheSouthernJackAss has nothing else for this blog, and this blog has nothing for me, you won’t need to ban me, for I won’t be back. Bob is my friend, I will not participate in any forum with an attitude such as the one displayed here. O’Brien will retort with his usual close-minded, “who cares”, well I care, and that’s all that matters…

wait! carolina lady, don’t leave. journalist wishes to blog with carolina lady.

apparently, someone has had a few posts deleted today. and will have more deleted into the night. soon, banishment. then, only the occasional post from a different i.p.

and why such bitterness? could be a character flaw if the blogger had character. alas, no character found.

and now, baseball … too bad the red sox can’t win it in boston for the fans there. or, wait, could happen if …

nah.

and cool night in atlanta. might go for a hot in-game snack tonight. melted cheese …

and dob, mlb continues to talk of the thin air in denver. what effect would thin air have on a radio station broadcast? and how would a savvy station manager adapt to thin air broadcast conditions?

Well-The Red Sox may not win the Series in Boston, but the Patriots just went up 52-6 over the Redskins (excuse me for my lack of PC-The Washington football team). Even with all the pretty leaves lying on the ground, begging to be raked, the Denizens of The Red Sox Nation are deliriously happy and joyous.

Maybe no pie, tonight, but a peanut butter and All Fruit sandwich on whole wheat chased by a mug of good Vermont Cider, pressed not 10 miles from my house. Now that’s good. Shelled peanuts in the shell for dessert, maybe.

Just came back after the Dawg euphoria wore down, to see—among other things—that SJA has left us again. Are we going to have a pool on how long he will be gone—this time?

And I believe that BobJ’s class and intellect are unquestioned, but his way of expressing himself and assuming the position(head and shoulders above everyone else)is/are questionable. DOB did.

lost the jackass again. and junior jackass title was only temporary. that means no jackasses on the blog.

journalist bob is one of the good guys on this blog and always has been. when jimmy smith first blogged with bob, jimmy smith had no idea what bob was talking about - that is because bob is very, very, smart and very crafty.

bob is talking down the road while many bloggers have not yet left the house.

bob was not talking politics. bob was talking baseball and relating it to truth, justice, and the american way. not nice to pull on superman’s cape.

oh, the humanity! can’t we all just get along? where is carolina lady?

would be better if the braves were in the series.

an apology to journalist bob would go a long way with this blogger - and maybe with others as well.

and perhaps the sja could be persuaded to once again return (how many times now?) and help rid the blog of the real a@@clowns, so to speak.

Well a hearty hello to all my blog friends. Just got back from watching the most beautiful sunset after hiking around the riverbank on the first cool day of the year and…uh, say whaa?

Yeow!!! Did someone throw a can of beans in the hotstove? The esteemed Carolina Lady leaving? Bob, Journalist your post was right on brother and I for one have really missed you around here. SJA, an admirable gesture sir…tellin’ it like it is and stickin’ up for friends. Perhaps the esteemed artist was right when he wondered aloud about a full moon.

On probably the last day of baseball this year and because we are all allowed a bad afternoon now and then I’d suggest everyone take a deep breath (four in Denver) and remember why we are here…or not.

DOB “When” Bobj reaches his senility and starts sounding like Hal in 2001 as he was being shut down by Dave(any kin?), the “regular” denizens will still be defending him. I guess that is OK and depends on your point of view. One that I do not share.

DOB: Your 1:07am was wrong. The Bosox are famously the exception to “down 3-0” reference. I do regret having nothing more to say than to correct you on this. I am waiting for those five psychodelic words: “pitchers and catchers reported today”.

full moon tonight. maybe that’s it. “regular” denizens are those who post frequently not those who have posted longest.

regular, irregular, what’s the difference? metamucil.

now, if bob wants you to understand him, bob will blog so that you can understand. understand?

esoteric blogging is sometimes necessary on this blog and journalist bob is the master.

now, allow this journalist to intervene and explain bob’s last post. evils are evils and accepting evils without challenge means evils will continue to be present. also, american league appears to be stronger than national league again this year.

While I’m still here, Jimmy “bridge over troubled water” Smith, I sincerely hope you didn’t take any offense at the last few Daily Buzz posts. The whole idea started as a salute to another Jimmy (the real mutant origin), then after getting into the story there were some comedic similarities. Hope you know that the tie-in was not planned, but after going down the road it became intentional, yet innocent and playful. Hope you know that. You and the “other” Jimmy are both admired and appreciated by this denizen. Maybe didn’t need to say that but there it is. No need to reply since you usually don’t…just wanted you to know, since I won’t be around much here from here on.

I have been properly commuted. And I was being polite since some of the “regulars” might not appreciate being referred to as “old”.
