Rockies in six … No, wait. Sox in five
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’m walking a couple blocks from Boston’s Kenmore Station to Fenway Park after riding in from Waltham, Mass., on the “T”, on an a unseasonably warm New England October afternoon — is there such a concept as unseasonably warm anymore?
Saw a gym with a hand-written sign in the window that said, “Wear the Sox ‘B’ and work out free.” And a government building of some sort with a Red Sox flag flying beneath the American flag.
Saw cars and houses adorned with “Go Sox” sentiments for miles and miles along the Green Line. Saw boys and girls, men and women everywhere wearing ballcaps with the familar “B.”
Now approaching the grandest old ballpark in the world, I’m looking down Landsdowne Street, behind the Green Monster in left field, and it takes me a moment to grasp the fact that there are more than a dozen tents on the sidewalk.
Folks have camped out for a couple days, waiting to buy a very limited number of seats for Wednesday’s World Series Game 1 between their beloved Sawx and the upstart Colorado Rockies. The Red Sox sell those last tix two hours before gametime.
I’ve seen this queing up and camping out thing plenty of times in college basketball; it happened before every big game at my alma mater, the University of Kansas.
But this isn’t college hoops. And these seats aren’t cheap. Far from cheap. And there middle-aged folks in some of those tents, folks who presumably have jobs. Folks you don’t expect to see sleeping on urban sidewalks.
It’s not like the Red Sox are new to this World Series thing, having won it in 2004 to shake their curse and all that. And it’s not like there are no diversions here in Boston, which is the anti-Atlanta in terms of current championship-caliber sports teams (even my Celtics have finally surrounded Paul Pierce with the talent to make a serious run).
But there they are, all disheveled and waiting for a chance to pay big dollars for the opportunity to watch the Red Sox.
Gotta love it.
Unless you’re the Rockies, perhaps.
Just took my seat in a very cramped Fenway pressbox. I’m listening to Rockies being interviewed while I watch Red Sox working out on the field.
And now, I’d like to waffle on my World Series pick before I’ve even officially made it.
I’ll confess: I was going to pick the Rockies to win in six games. Now, I’m going to pick the Red Sox to win in five. Yes, that’s serious waffling.
Don’t know how exactly to explain the change in my pick, other than the look in some Colorado players’ eyes and the tone of their statements, which have quite a bit of awe and don’t-know-how-we-did-it.
(Before I forget, I stopped at a large corporate blue-and-yellow electronics store on the way here today, to pick up new CDs by Neil Young and Shooter Jennings. Much as I prefer to give my business to my man Don at his indie record store in Toco Hills in Atlanta, it’s hard to pass up those loss-leader prices on just-released CDs at the huge chain stores — damn them, he says, shaking his fist.)
And for a musical transition I’m hoping the Red Sox will have the Irish-American rock band Dropkick Murphys play again at some point in the World Series, like they did when they played before Game 7 of the ALCS, on the field on the dirt cutout warning-track corner in right-center field.
Some folks said once the Dropkick Murphys played a rousing couple of songs before that game, complete with accompanying Irish step-dancers, the Indians didn’t stand a chance. The place was charged up beyond belief.
OK, back to the Rockies.
Folks, as much as I’d like to see the Senior Circuit pick up its second consecutive World Series championship, I’m afraid the spectacularly surging Rockies are in a whole different theatre here, and I’ve got a feeling their 21-1 run is about to end abruptly at the hands of Josh Beckett, Big Papi, Manny (and his incessant Being Manny) and the Red Sox before their passionate fans at the Fens.
The Rockies will face Beckett and Schilling in Games 1-2 with passionate Red Sox fans breathing down their backs, and the Rockies had best not expect another of their miraculous comebacks if they want to get out of here without being down 2-0 in the series.
Yes, the Rockies won two of three here at Fenway in June. But that was June.
Jeff Francis, their baby-faced and well-spoken ace pitcher, described what it was like pulling into Fenway on the team bus Tuesday and seeing the plethora of satellite dishes and TV trucks, not to mention all the fans mulling around outside on a workout day that wasn’t even open to the public.
There were hundreds of microphone and notepad-wielding reporters at the park when the Rockies arrived in the early afternoon.
“I’m sure the Red Sox are used to this every day, but we’ve never seen anything like this,” Francis said.
None of us have seen anything quite like this run the Rockies are on. From a fourth-place, near-.500 team in mid-September, to 21 wins in 22 games, including sweeps in each of their first two postseason series.
But how many of you believe they can keep it going through the World Series? It’d be a remarkable story, one that I believe most of us who aren’t denizens of Red Sox Nation would probably like to see reach a new climax.
But can they pick up where they left off after eight days of watching and waiting for the World Series to begin? Maybe they were too good for their own good in the NLCS, when they convinced seemingly everyone but Arizona’s Eric Byrnes that they were the better team (Uh, Byrnesy, they were the better team. Oh, and stop wearing skin-tight red undershirts that go to your wrists with matching red tights if you’re going to pull your pants up to the knees. That’s just wrong).
“If you would have told us we had to win 13 out of 14 to get in [the postseason], we probably would have thought it was impossible,” Francis said.
If they keep that run going after more than a week of rest, they should get super-sized World Series rings. All that time off, and now the Red Sox go up against Beckett, who’s 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA in this postseason. Tough task, lads.
By the way, Francis will be pitching on 12 days rest, Beckett on five (one more than normal).
While I’m thinking about it: You’ll hear and read more about it later, but if you haven’t heard already: Red Sox knucklerballer Tim Wakefield (sore shoulder) isn’t going to be on the World Series roster.
Terry Francona said he’ll start Beckett, then Schilling and Dice-K in Games 2 & 3. Hasn’t committed to a Game 4 starter, but I’m betting it’s Beckett if the Sox are either behind in the series or have a chance to close it out.
Rockies plan to start Francis in the opener, followed by rookie Ubaldo Jimenez (rookie facing Schilling in the World Series at Fenway — yikes), then Josh Fogg (what’s gotten into him, by the way?) and — here’s a bit of a surprise — Aaron Cook in Game 4.
Cook, the opening day starter who hasn’t pitched since Aug. 10 because of an oblique strain.
Rosters don’t have to be set until Wednesday morning, and that’s when both teams will make their final choices known.
Oh, and for all those Hahira- and Valdosta-based Red Sox fans: South Georgia favorite son (and former Brave) J.D. Drew, coming off his grand slam and five RBIs in game 7 of the ALCS, will get the start in right field Wednesday the lefty Francis. Drew didn’t play against many lefties down the stretch.
The mother of all late-season surges: Remember when the Braves beat the Rockies in back-to-back games Aug. 4-5 at Turner Field? No? They did. Trust us.
That began a road skid that saw the Rockies post a 5-10 record in 15 road games through Sept. 10.
Since Sept. 11, the Rockies are 12-1 on the road, holding opponents to two runs or fewer in eight of them.
They hit .296 and scored 60 runs while posting a 3.18 ERA during their 8-1 road stretch to finish the regular season, and they are 4-0 despite a .234 batting average in postseason road games. Their pitchers have a 2.13 road ERA in the postseason, in two road wins apiece against the Phillies and Diamondbacks.
But now they get the Red Sox, and something has to give. Boston has hit .323 and scored 49 runs in six postseason games at Fenway, including six or more runs in five games and 10 or more in three.
They outscored the Indians 23-4 in the last two games of the ALCS at Fenway.
One last thing: The Oxford American is a really good magazine to begin with. But the annual music issue (and accompanying CD) alone is worth the price of a subscription.
I’m telling you, I eagerly await this thing in my mailbox every year, and this year’s might be the best they’ve done. It’s 26 songs that span generations and every genre imaginable, all by performers with Southern roots.
This rich, eclectic set ranges from country and rock to folk and blues, from Eldridge Holmes’ beautiful R&B cover of “If I Were a Carpenter” to Dwight Yoakam’s “Yet to Succeed” and Zakary Thaks’ garage-rock “Bad Girl,” from Thelonious Monk’s sublime “Trinkle, Tinkle” to Iris Dement’s “Sweet is the Melody.”
You can get it on the newsstands.
I lied. Still one more thing: Anyone wonder if it’s total coincidence that Chipper Jones complained loudly this summer about the Braves having to play Boston every year in interleague play, and now, for the first time since interleague play began, the Braves don’t play the Red Sox in 2008?
Instead, the Phillies will face the Red Sox in interleague play in ’08. For his next act, Hoss should address the starting times of Braves home games. Then maybe the playoff schedule.
“COLD COLD HEART” by Hank Williams
I tried so hard my dear to show that you’re my every dream.
Yet you’re afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart
Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I didn’t do
In anger unkind words are said that make the teardrops start
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind, and melt your cold cold heart
You’ll never know how much it hurts to see you sit and cry
You know you need and want my love yet you’re afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from life, to try it just ain’t smart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart
There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you, the more we drift apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

Braves signed three baseball-ops guys to two-year contract extensions today, including scouting director Roy Clark. Most of you probably realize this already, but if not, let me say, that’s very good news for the Braves. Clark is one of the best.

This may seem like an odd question or statement, but don’t you think upper management types such as GM’s and scouting director’s should get paid more? Not to say that their salaries aren’t sufficient, but there really is no day off for people in baseball. You should know that more than anyone. Just thought I would bring it up after I saw the Braves re-upped with Roy Clark.

I’d love to see the Red Sox win. Yet another manager that Bobby cox is supposedly “superior” than gets his 2nd World Series ring, or one more than The Boob.
And before you morons even bring up the money excuses, Bobby Cox took very rich teams and very talented teams into the playoffs many times and choked.
Once again, the most overrated manager in the history of baseball is Bobby the Boob.

It would be very big for the Rockies to win one of the two games at Fenway. That way they can get the stars out of their eyes. Sorry, still don’t like Boston. There will be twice as many people at Coors Field and cold. Let’s see how the BoSox handle that?
Of course the RedSoxs at the thing in Boston, what else do they have to look forward too in their life? Warm weather? Traffic?

NASCARfan, you are an idiot. Bobby took teams rich in talent DEEP into the playoffs. His teams didn’t choke in the first round. Both teams can’t advance, Bobby took teams to the playoffs that shouldn’t have even sniffed third place in the NL East the last three to four years we made the playoffs. Aging rotation, low-mid level prospects until the last surge of guys in 2005 made it possible. Those teams played themselves out towards the end of the season and then just lost it in the playoffs. Not because of Bobby, idiot..
As far as this series goes, I think the Rockies don’t miss a step and keep right on winning, Rocks in 4.

Oh, so Boston doesn’t have much to offer, huh?
Not fine restaurants, great pubs, concerts by the finest performers in every genre of music. Not art galleries and symphonies and all that stuff that I personally am not big into, but others certainly are. Not the best NFL franchise, several of the finest academic institutions in the world, NBA and NHL teams with storied pasts, outdoor participation sports galore …
Gil, it’s not an affront on our own hometowns to acknowledge that there are some great cities where others live. Boston and Denver are two of them. Both great places.

By David O'Brien
October 23, 2007 6:14 PM | Link to this
Braves4Ever, Cordier is only 21 years old, a hard-throwing (mid-90 mph range) prospect who’s missed two of the past three seasons with injuries — a freak knee injury in 2005 and Tommy John surgery last fall that kept him out of the 2007 season.
He put up fairly impressive stats in 2006 in limited innings — 4-1 with a 2.91 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 10 starts between rookie ball and A-ball, with 42 strikeouts and 17 walks in 52-2/3 innings.
I’ve heard he projects to be a good mid-rotation starter in the majors someday, if he ever stays healthy.

* ERic Cordier*
Was a split season for the 2nd round pick between Iowa and Burlington. About a 1.10 WHIP “has to make a successful comeback from Tommy John surgery, but with his ability to reach the mid-90s with his fastball, the potential is there for him to develop into a middle-of-the-rotation starter or, more likely, a setup man. He doesn’t figure to see the majors before 2009.”(Baseball Prospectus) Isn’t an answer this year but maybe a player to watch

Francis vs Beckett sounds like a tough assignment for the Rockies, but they should not be scared by any of the other Sox pitchers except the closer. Schilling is only a shadow of what he was 2 or 3 years ago, and Dice K reminds me a lot of the ‘06 Tim Hudson — looks good throwing strikes 1 and 2, but can’t put batters away. He runs up a pitch count faster than Chuck James and is gone by the 6th inning, if not before. The rest of the Sox bullpen is best described as “serviceable”. The Rockies lineup is comparable to that of the Red Sox and the Rockies play much better defense. The big variable is the DH — Adv. Red Sox at home, but a big disadvantage away. The Sox will have to either sit Youklis (or Ortiz) or play Youklis in the OF when in the NL park. It’s hard to take into account an intimidation factor until the Series actually starts, and see how it starts, but, if I were you DOB, I would stick with my earlier pick.

Don’t know if this has been posted yet; but on June 14th, (My first trip to Fenway Park), the Rockies defeated Josh Becket, and the winning pitcher was none other than Jeff Francis.
Little did I know as I sat freezing on that cold June night, that I would be watching a preview of game 1 of the World Series.
Here’s to Garret Atkins hitting another grand slam off Josh Beckett - who, IMO, is due for another loss!

… during the season I watch this UK based website that summarizes the odds from betting houses for all sorts of sports, moment to moment … during baseball games, odds change 5-15 times, and sometimes within seconds of big plays … for instance, Cleveland’s odds to win the series were roughly 2.5 to 1 at the start of game 7 … Sox scored 3 runs, odds went to 9 to 1 … then Cleveland scored 2, odds 3.5 to 1 … Sox scored 2 in the 7th, 60 to 1 … then, literally 2 seconds after that 3 run double in the 8th it went to 1000 to 1 …
… wish I’d thought to do this sooner, the Cleveland data is gone, but here’s a line graph of the how the Rockies and the Red Sox odds changed during October (odds to win the World Series)

Pierce, Garnett (who looks awesome and looks like he’s ready to win big time) and Allen are great, but still got to find a dependable 1-guard. Maybe Rondo can handle it. On NESN (New England Sports Network) they just showed a replay of the series-opening 2-1 Boston win against Colorado on June 12 at Boston.
What do you want to bet they don’t show games 2 & 3 of that series, when the Red Sox hammered both Curt Schilling and Josh Beckett, outscoring the Red Sox 19-3 in those games?
Fogg beat Schilling and Francis beat Beckett in that series.

Sir Guy of the Savannah, I responded to your inquiry on the previous post.
Amateur David O’B denying he a communist again … goodness!
I’m not a conservative republican neither but I too shop at Best Buy … not telling you why, that would be amateurish … but why does David so do? It’s sort of presumptive to suggest that one can speak for all, don’t you think … maybe you don’t but so methinks.
I once, twice or thrice suggested that moral corruption beyond redemption was a road down which we appeared to be traveling … it’s comforting to see that, at least in Portland Maine, folks are coming to grips with the problem … seems they have a problem with too many 11 year old girls getting pregnant so they’re offering birth control pills to girls in some of their Middle Schools … giving condoms to the boys didn’t work.
Laugh if you will … you should be appalled … well, maybe not, especially if you’re a homosexual boy scout leader … hey, if JK Rowling says it’s okay, who am I to argue?

Stinger, so true about Roy and Kurt Kemp. Roy got overshadowed in the latter years by Dayton, but they were a two-headed machine, both very important.
You’re right about Celtics, too. Definitely still need a good point. But you know, they are so strong in most other areas, I think they can go deep into playoffs, maybe even win the East. The footage I’ve seen of Garnett — wow. Dude’s in great shape and having fun, playing hard even in preseason.
Pollard’s a trip, man. Used to drive around KU campus in a huge, old Cadillac convertible he called Marvin. And those hairstyles … he’s a trip. And he can bang inside with anyone, very good guy to bring in off the bench and body up folks.

Classic. I will look at this as a win for Chipper. Why? I like Chipper. Watched this guy play since his double A days.
Now, Bravos, extend Chippers contract and sign Tex long term. Then pick up a good young starter that will fill out the top of the rotation. Stay away from Mr. Mediocrity and next season is all ours.

Happy World Series eve everyone…
The Indians found out the hard way that when you have the boys from Beantown down, you have to finish them off. Nothing is more impressive to me than the run the Blake Street Bombers made since mid September when they were looking up from a 4 1/2 game deficit. The night of the sixteenth had the Rockies facing the Marlins and after a victory that night, Colorado would only taste defeat one other time (on 9/28 against Arizona).
The Red Sox are on a resurgence of late themselves and fought back after dropping three of the first four ALCS games to the Indians. The last three games of the series saw the Bosox put up 30 runs and 40 hits on a shell shocked Cleveland pitching staff. I like the Rockies and they’re a great story, however the week plus layoff may be too much to ask them to overcome. I’m taking the Sox in six.
Great news on the signing of Roy Clark today (no, not the veteran of Hee Haw, but the Braves’ director of Scouting). Couldn’t agree more with Stinger on Clark and Kemp being heroes behind the scenes. Payroll always gets attention by most fans and the media, and deservedly so, however to me, every dollar the team spends on scouting and player development is just as important. The Braves as a franchise has arguably one of the best in the game, and as long as Roy Clark is overseeing all things scouting in the Braves Nation, I feel like we’ll always have a pipeline of talent from which Kurt Kemp and his staff molds into future Braves. I can’t argue with their success when I see the fruits of their labor in the stead of McCann, Francoeur, Brayan Pena, Tony Pena, Adam LaRoche, Brandon Jones, Jordan Schafer and many others.

Thorman might be a good player, no doubt about it, problem is he is still young, and he was not ready to play 1st everyday, so he choked. Id try start him at AAA for a few months before bringing him up again. Spring will not be enough for him.
He wants it badly but in my opinion, he is trying to hard and has not realized this is MLB, he needs to wake up, be more patient and then he will improve.
AJ will not get any better, it is clear he missed a step, no surprise since he is playing CF with enough overweight to think he is carrying the groceries he just bought for whole month.

Thorman is going nowhere. The guy is Teixeira’s understudy , period. I mean , why trade a young backup first baseman who will make the league minimum , it makes no sense. By the way , Thorman’s defense at first base improved just from being around the gold glove wonder that is Teixeira. I’m taking the Rockies , I have to root for the underdog. T-hawkin’, Andruw isn’t going to go anywhere to play a corner outfield spot. Not yet. He hasn’t fallen off yet to warrant that move. He’s still one of the best defensive c-fielders. Not head-and-shoulders above others, like he used to be (and like Boras claims he still is), but definitely still one of the handful of best center fielders, defensively….
Oh, and go back to “Billie Jean”-era Jackson to really get to when MTV was great. They had an edge back then, used to actually break new, alternative-rock music all the time. Billie Jean was the first non-rock video they played with any regularity….
Someday I’d imagine they’ll have best-of “120 Minutes” programs, the show that used to play late Sunday night on MTV and would have world premieres of great new alt-rock and punk stuff, with this British dude, Dave Kendall….

The Damages season finale was a narrative mess last night. I hate when they spend 12 episodes dragging out the inevitable and then scramble around in the last hour trying to wrap up loose ends. Even if I was the type who gave away endings, I couldn’t on that show last night. Too poorly written and executed to even bother trying to explain. Such a shame too. Not the ending a well written and well acted season deserved. But maybe that’s just me. It just had that feel of one of those games where Brett Favre actually plays disciplined and very well throughout the first three quarters but then just recklessly starts heaving balls aimlessly through the air in the fourth quarter. A well designed game plan shot to hell.

As for the conversation from yesterday, I think Shaun’s point and DAP’s point (you both seemed to be agreeing with each other although disagreeing with each other) was that if you are gonna be an overswinger like Thorman or Andruw, it is imperative that you be patient and very selective about what you swing at. An overswinger by his nature is gonna have huge holes in their swing - unless they are Gary Sheffield, Vladimir Guerrero, and Alfonso Soriano.
Because the overswinger swings so freaking hard, when he is not selective and stupidly swings at balls and strikes outside of his limited hitting zone, he is gonna tend to look Bugs Bunny silly twisting and turning every which way while he is swinging and missing or feebly dribbling grounders or lofting lazy fly balls (sorry Fly) and pop ups that are easily caught.
It is the look of Reginald Martinez Jackson corkscrewing himself into the batter’s box when he struck out or Andruw Jones doing whatever the hell he has been doing for the last 15 months he has been in a Braves uni.
Overswingers are just mechanically unsound by their very nature. Their at bats can appear very ugly when they flail away at pitches outside of their hitting zone. It is not the strike zone that is important for a hitter - it is their own personal hitting zones that is important.
But when an overswinger gets a ball into his hitting zone, the slo mo on his homer often makes the swing of that overswinger look picture perfect and mechanically sound. It is when they swing at pitches outside of their hitting zone that they look terribly unsound mechanically and basically Bugs Bunny silly as they corkscrew themselves into the ground.
That is why it is okay to be an overswinger so long as you are willing to be more patient and selective and wait for your pitch in your own personal hitting zone. This causes more strikeouts but also more walks and also more solid contact when the overswinger makes contact. Adam Dunn, Ryan Howard, Jim Thome, Sammy Sosa, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, and even Andruw Jones before the last year and a half are proof of this. Obviously, you would prefer if Scott Thorman had the tremendous power potential of these fellas if he was gonna continue to overswing like he does. I am not so sure that he has their power potential or their overall God given talent.
Preferably, you would like every hitter to be as disciplined and mechanically sound as Chipper Jones. Despite being so mechanically sound that he can basically drive any strike in any location to any part of the ballpark that he wants, Chipper still strives to wait for his pitch that he can drive the hardest. You rarely see Chipper overswing or look feeble at the plate. Even when the results are feeble from time to time, the swing and approach at the plate rarely is. His daddy taught him well.
Even a little singles hitter like Wade Boggs was notorious for working the pitcher into throwing a pitch into his hitting zone. He would foul back strike after strike after strike outside of his hitting zone until the pitcher either walked him or threw him a strike in his hitting zone. Obviously, the overswinger is not gonna have the ability of Boggs to do that because their mechanics are not as disciplined as Boggs but you get the point.
It all reminds me of that Captain Caveman blog DOB did based on a chat I believe he did with Chipper where CHipper basically said Frenchy and Andruw have a difficult time because of their lack of patience. If I recall correctly he alluded to their abilities because of their sheer talent to pound the hell out of the back of rotations but to be overmatched by good pitchers unless the good pitcher makes a mistake because of a lack of plate discipline and the unwilingness/inability to make the pitcher throw the pitch you personally want/need them to throw in your wheelhouse. I think Chipper also kinda said he would prefer if all hitters had his approach to keep their front shoulder in and drive the ball through the centerfield wall so that they are better able to adapt to pitches in and out and drive those over the left field and right field walls as well ………
but, hey, not every hitter is as perfect or understands hitting the way Chipper does and some, including overswingers, just have to make do with who they are and what their mechanics are as hitters. For the overswinger that usually means being more selective and patient than the more mechanically sound hitters.
It reminds of that conversation DOB had with Smoltz about Leo Mazzone where Smoltz basically took Mazzone to task for not understanding that every pitcher is not gonna be mechanically sound and have the stuff of Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, and Millwood. If I was reading Smoltz right, what he was saying is that he wished Mazzone would have appreciated more that certain pitchers like Chuck James are gonna be mechanically unsound but you have to work with them with the mechanics as they are and make the best of it and let them stay true to who they are and what got them to the majors instead of focusing on what they can not do and trying to fix their mechanics to make them something you want them to be instead of who they really are.
SO, if I was reading Smoltz right, what he would be saying is that you don’t try to change Thorman or Chuck James too much mechanically, you take the mechanics and “stuff” Thorman and James do have and you make the best of it by getting Chuck to learn a pitch that is consistent with his mechanics or by getting Chuck to learn hitters more and how to pitch more or by getting Thorman to learn pitchers more or how to be more patient and selective at the plate.
What I read out of Smoltz is that you need to focus on what the given pitcher or hitter do have and make the best of it by teaching them how to hit or pitch in a manner consistent with who they are mechanically and “stuff” wise as a hitter or pitcher.
The Mazzone approach would be to break a hitter or pitcher down and make them abandon their mechanics and what got them to the majors until the young hitter or pitcher gets completely lost and forgets what made them so good they got to the majors in the first place.
And you wonder why there has been such a lack of development of good young pitchers for the Braves?
What Smoltz was basically saying is that you can’t expect James to look mechanically like Glavine or Thorman to look mechanically like Chipper but you can teach them how to pitch or hit in accordance with who they are mechanically as a hitter or pitcher.
Or maybe I was reading what Smoltz and Chipper were saying all wrong.
Well, I’ll stop babbling like a long winded idiot now.

David - Call me Green with envy. Boston is the best city in America - when you have the World Series too - that’s just over the top.
Very rarely do I find it necessary to correct you but there are always exceptions. The best NFL franchise happens to be located about 1.5 hours north of my home - Git ‘R Dungy.
I might also add that the very BEST of “your Celtics” is from about 45 minutes west of my home.
Seriously - it’s sickening that the Bravos are not in the World Series but if you had to pick a city to host the World Series - not a better place than Boston.

I hope Donald Arthur Mattingly does not get the Yankees manager job. If he does, he will be set up to fail. I love the dude too much and have too much respect for him to see him get disgraced by the Steinbrenners ….. yet again. Their campaign to push him out the door in 1995 was rather ugly.
I don’t think my poor father would be able to cope with seeing Donnie Baseball put down and shoved out the door unceremoniously yet again. He might swear off the Yanks once and for all if it happens again. Whether rational or not, he always says that Torre and Steinbrenner should have found a way to get Mattingly on the 1996 team so that Mattingly could have a ring. My pops always says if they could find a way to get those bums Gooden and Strawberry on that team, they could have found a way to make Mattingly useful to that team.
My dad is having a hard time coping with seeing Willie Randolph in a Mets uni and, even worse, being put down by Mets fans and brass. My dad always says former Red Sox stars like Clemens and Boggs and Mets stars like Cone, Strawberry, and Gooden come to the Bronx to get glory and that former Yankees stars like Randolph get nothing but disgraced when they put on a Mets uni.
Oh well. Looks like the Red Sox are getting all the glory now though. Perhaps it is not a coincidence that the Red Sox and Yankees both won as soon as they got rid of aging stars with declining production like Mattingly and Nomar. I guess sentimentality and business don’t mix as a general rule. I guess that is what Scoots and JJS and 10Paul are trying so say about Glavine although I still believe Glavine has enough to add.
BTW, the Yankees generally do a good job of disgracing their own on the way out the door with graceless exits like Mattingly in 1995, Yogi in 1984, Billy Martin suffered it countless times, Scooter when they refused to allow him to go to Mickey Mantle’s funeral which caused Scooter to cry publicly and quit broadcasting, or this month Joe Torre.

I am excited to watch this World Series. I think the Rockies have more of a chance than people give them. Way too many people think tonights game will decide who wins the series, but I disagree. Ubaldo Jimenez has the advantage against Schilling Thursday night. Schilling’s stuff looked awful against the Indians. I would love to say Rockies in 6, but I am too chicken to do so. Red Sox in 6….

From a rainy ATL DOB, its a great day, the day of Game 1 of the World Series. A lot of people are making a big deal out of the Rockies long lay off. It will be made into a bigger deal if Beckett shuts them down completely. I don’t care if they played last night to prepare for game 1, there is a good chance Beckett is going to shut anyone down. Earl Weaver used to say momentum is only your next game starter. How true. What a huge story it will be if the Rockies pull off tonights game. I want something we have not had in a while, 7 games. Enjoy your time DOB and hopefully you will find a story or two regarding the Braves.

Braveheart, you make excellent points. It’s very hard to be a great major league hitter these days without striking out a good bit (at least according to what most of us think of as “a good bit”). It’s just the nature of the game.
There are a few elite hitters that can actually hit the ball hard enough to be elite while still avoiding a fairly high strikeout total but usually hitting the ball hard enough to be a good major league hitter comes with a fair amount of strikeouts these days.

Braveheart, I don’t think you were babbling at all. Made a lot of sense. As for Smoltz, you’re basically right on. He was saying that Leo was great at getting veterans to focus on down-and-away, down-and-away, and to simplify things, and that really helped with reclamation projects who’d had success before.
Because they had done it, they were easier to convince they could do it again, and simplifying things allowed them to get so many conflicting thoughts out of their heads and to stop trying to force things, stop trying to go inside with pitches they weren’t ready to throw, etc. But, as Smoltz put it, some pitchers are too inexperience or don’t have the command or talent to throw that down-and-away pitch and hit the spot consistently. And Leo wasn’t willing to adapt to them and have them pitch to their strengths….
RAY, it’s not only rainy but also around 50 degrees here. Raw, gray day out there. Rained moved in a lot later than the forecast, which means it might stick around longer and affect tonight’s game….
And you’re right: If the Rockies beat Beckett tonight? Then it’s on….
As for Braves stories, there are probably fewer Braves connections with these two teams than just about any teams that could’ve made the Series. I mean, with Colorado especially, there are no significant ones I can find. Not many teams you can say that about, regarding the Braves.

Braveheart, fortunately I stopped in first sentence of your Damages review. Not gonna see it until I get home, which might not be until after the Nov. 3 KU-Nebraska game in Lawrence, if this World Series goes seven games (Game 7 would be Nov. 1).
But I’m thinking it’s not going more than five, and we won’t be returning to Boston. We’ll see.
Game 1 is huge if Colorado wins, obviously. Not so much if Boston wins, in which case Game 2 is the big one. Rockies really need to win one here. Don’t want to let the Red Sox smell a second World Series title in four years by getting off to a 2-0 start….

i dont think the rockies and the sox are too unevenly matched, really. when you take a great offensive NL team like the rockies and you add the DH, it tends to even things out. with the DH in the lineup, the rockies might have a better offense top to bottom than the red sox.
red sox pitching is better, but if the rox can overcome beckett, they can overcome anyone. even if they dont beat beckett, they should be able to handle the rest of the red sox staff.
if the rockies can take at least one in boston, i give the rockies the advantage, because in colorado, the red sox lose the DH, which means either david ortiz or kevin youkilis is not in the lineup. both of those guys are big offensive players for them, and the rox are used to a lineup where thier pitcher hits.

Terrific news with Roy Clark. It appears and this may be too early to say but, it appears that Liberty is going to let the baseball people do their jobs. If that is the case then I can see the Braves return to the playoffs. If I heard correctly, the ‘98 Yanks were the last team with the best regular season record to win the world series? If that is the case then here come the Rocks. If stats are correct then has there been a better team than the Rockies since the All-Star break? Most runs scored and best ERA. That is not a cinderella story.

DAP, I wouldn’t be surprised to see anything happen but I think it’s clear the Red Sox are the better team. They won six more games in a tougher league. Yes, Rockies get to add a DH but the Red Sox have a DH also. And, yes, Youkilis or Ortiz will have to sit but the Rockies will be without a DH also. And the eight Red Sox in the lineup are better hitters than the eight Rockies, whether it’s Youkilis and especially if it’s Ortiz.

I’d agree with DAP that the teams aren’t as unevenly matched as some believe, at least offensively. Rockies lineup has some very good hitters, they just happen to be young and not nearly as well known as Rockies guys. But Holliday, Tulowitzki, Atkins, Hawpe, Helton — all very good. And Spilborgs is tough on lefties.
Strong lineup. Really strong.
And Colorado’s defense is FAR better.
But Boston’s lineup is still better top-to-bottom, easily. So is their rotation and back of bullpen.

Rockies - Braves and Red Sox - Braves Connection
Javey Lopez was with the Rockies in Spring Training competing for a backup catcher job before they cut him… .
I am glad JD is not a brave. The last game of his braves career Braves vs Astros i was in the outfield and i swear his lame a* pulled up on a ball Frenchey would have caught … even if he had been at Parkview and they dropped him in the outfield with his football equipment on (probably what he was doing at the time)… ohh yeah, and that was the hit that came with two outs and Chris R. about to get us out of a jam … then the iceberg hit (well they must have known, God moves on the water like casey jones) …braves have never been the same.
As much as it sucked with him leaving and the prospect - he would have been a crappy player to lock up for years… the most boring Star to have on a team.

so you think twolowitsky or how ever you spell it is way better than lugo, of course he is. at what positions are the sox SIGNIFICANTLY better than the rockies? the only one i might give you is if david ortiz plays 1st base, but even then, helton has his own strengths. i even think the rockies have an offensive adavatge in right field. hawpe had a much better season than drew.
anyways, i think they are pretty evenly matched. im hoping for a great series with the rox coming out on top.

shaun check out this page. it compares the offense of the rockies and red sox. red sox have a few categories they are better in, and the rockies have a few they are better in. keep in mind the natural adavatage the red sox have because they use the DH all year, and these teams are very similar offensively. this is why red sox are at a big disadvantage playing in colorado. take the DH out of thier stats, and they look alot different, but the rockies stats stay the same.

speaking of CF , somebody mentioned Coco Crisp as a potential trade. Now , with the emergence of Jacoby Ellsbury in Boston , I have to admit that the BoSox might consider parting ways with Crisp. His current contract is very affordable , 4.75 million in 2008 and 5.75 million in 2009. The deal contains an 8 million team option for 2010 with a 500,000 buyout and contains salary escalator provisions. Crisp(27) is four years older than Ellsbury(23) but he has the added value of being a switch hitter where as Jacoby bats lefty.

I don’t care whose suppose to win, I want the BOSOX for no other reason than to rub it in Steinbrenners face. His ego really can’t handle that his most hated rival wins the world series. If baseball had rules about maxiumum amounts teams can pay for players, Steincheater could never win anything. He always thought that if he could buy every top player available, he could dominate baseball. His attitude permeates into every level of sports, even to the college level where schools pay players.

Crisp will definetly get traded this winter, but I have no idea what it would take to get someone like that. They may just ask for a prospect back for him. Although I wouldn’t give up anything near a high level prospect for him. That is a very affordable salary for the Braves and you have to figure that he will slug more at some point. It is baffling to see his dropoff in power the last two seasons. His eye at the plate has improved, so if the power can come back to the point where he could slug .420, then he would be a great pickup. He plays great Defense and if he hits .275, he should produce an OBP of .350. I’ll take .770 OPS with his defensive skills any day of the week.
Could Oscar Villareal and a prospect be enough?
Probably not, they would want Devine in the trade.

Good question. I think it is difficult to think of a lineup without Renteria in it. I am guessing that if we deal Renteria, and somehow also acquire Crisp, the lineup would look like this:
2B Johnson
SS Escobar
3B Jones
1B Teixiera
C McCann
RF Francouer
LF Jones/Diaz(Although if you look at Jones Minor League totals, he hit better against lefties)
CF Crisp

I HOPE he will be as good as I thought he was going to be when we drafted him and before the 2 grand slams, but if Bobby won’t use, lets trade him!
Shaun, how do you think Crisp stacks up against Cameron? Interested in your thoughts…

DAP If Crisp was obtained and Renteria traded my choice / guess of a batting order would be as follows:
1- Crisp (CF) 2 - Escobar (SS) 3 - Jones (3RD) 4- Tex (1st) 5 - McCann (c) 6 - Francoeur (rf) 7 - Johnson 8 - LF - ??? (Diaz and platoon away) 9 - pitcher

jjs, you’re asking a lot there! LOL
Some of you folks are engaging in (bad) 2nd grade-level behavior and are degrading yourselves terribly. How do you ever expect others to respect you when you behave so? You’re better than that.
You are responsible for you own behavior, provocation or no. You have the choice to take the high road of maturity and ignore, or to drop to their level and engage pointlessly and accomplish nothing that benefits you.
So what if somebody writes something against you. Doesn’t make it true, does it? Nobody believes it anyway. You actually gain respect by ignoring the taunt.
Hey, Sam! I don’t forget fellow Tar Heels! You’re in Morehead on the waterfront?? This is me, green with envy!! :-) How I’d love to be there having a great seafood meal, then head north across the Carteret bridge towards Cedar Island and the ferry! Pure heaven! Enjoy, my friend! :-))

DAP, you are right. I think the Colorado offense is very impressive and the Red Sox may not be quite as impressive as it looks because of Fenway Park but it is also impressive.
I do think the Rockies offense is a little worse than it looks because of Coors Field and playing in the NL—however much weaker it is, I’m sure we all agree that it is the weaker league. And I’m looking at their league ranks in things like runs, OBP and SLG, which counterbalance the DH-no DH problem. Sox ranked 3rd in runs, Rockies ranked 2nd. Both got an advantage from their home parks but Sox ranked higher in a tougher league. It’s close.
I think pitching depth is where the Sox have the significant edge.

Amen, Gil. But its a free blog, so tussle they will.
Wayne - I think that the musician Roy Clark played a Byrdland. Not sure, but the vid I saw had him with a thinline w/Florentine cutaway. 175’s are really cool gits, though. Good story on it too.
I’d like to see the Rockies pull this off, but they may have had too much time off and cooled down. Man, they were more than on fire. They are a good team at the core, though. Good hitters. The Sox look like they may be cresting, but you gotta play the games.

I have nothing on which to base the following observations other than what would seem to be an appearance of the obvious.
That is, the drop off of power and slugging percentage by some players appears to be directly proportional to the increase of steroids testing and crack down on substances like human growth hormones.
Perhaps some players are just coming back to the pack. I predict there will be an increase in the importance of players with speed as the long ball will become more of a rarity.
With a good physical regime Andrew Jones could again be the preeminent centerfielder he once was but he is going to have to completely change his hitting philosophy to be of real value to his next team.
There are lots of good defensive outfielders scattered throughout the minor leagues but it is the rare player who is a five tool guy like Francouer. Those players are not usually available for the asking.
Braveheart I have to give you your due on your posting last night. You hit the nail on the head.

flange1, I think Crisp has the possibility of being as valuable as Cameron offensively as Cameron over the next few seasons or just a little worse. Crisp, from everything I’ve read and heard, is one of the best defensive center fielders in the game.
I don’t think trading for Crisp would be a bad move depending on what the Red Sox will want.

No question about it Shaun and as we all know this seems to win out over the majority of time.
This series is a win - win situation for me. Red Sox fans, though annoying, are die-hard fans. Anyone see Braves fans camping out for days to get a ticket. Also if Boston wins the Yankees take another hit in the gut. Rockies….no reason to dislike them but no reason to pull like they were the Braves playing either.

Sam I met quite a few fine folks from Kinston who moved to Richmond after DuPont shut down their Orlon operation back in ‘82 or ‘83. Nice folks. Morehead city is a wonderful place to visit too. This is the perfect time of year to vacation along the southeast coast. The weather is not too hot and the prices are reasonable.
DOB I stopped at Parker’s on my way home form Holden Beach in August. I bet it has not changed much in 20 years. I stopped traveling the interstate as much as possible because you don’t get to see much of the country or all the wonderful old restaurants as you do along the byways.

Here’s something Keith Law wrote about 30 minutes ago:
“I know this is heresy, but I think the playoffs and especially the World Series are about business - they’re extremely profitable, and they provide MLB with a ton of marketing. And the fact that the best team usually doesn’t win the whole shebang seems to increase the popularity of the event. If we’re concerned about fundamental questions about who the best team is or who the best players are, we can’t get hung up on a few games in October. But probably 99% of baseball fans care more about who wins the World Series.”

Oh, don’t know if anyone watched that first video I posted yesterday of Alan Schwarz at the 2007 New England Symposium on Statistics in Sports, but in it he talks about bringing up to Chipper Jones the fact that based on the statistical probabilities, we would have expected the Braves to win only one WS title. He says Chipper wasn’t pleased. Very funny. DOB, I would like to hear Chipper’s take on it, if possible.

Flange1, I think Devine passed a year-long test last year, going back-and-forth countless times, never complaining, then performing well almost every time he was called upon. I think it was a big year for him in the Braves’ eyes, and he’ll get a legit shot at a bullpen job next spring, and sticking with the big club.
They had a couple guys out of options last year, so that severely hurts the chances of a borderline-ready guy like Devine who still has options left.
But he got through it, and like I said, without complaining or pouting or letting it affect him on the mound. And getting out of that bases-loaded jam in Houston at the end of the season, before a packed and boisterous crowd, left a good impression with Braves bosses, too.

I am not sure I want Crisp leading off if we acquired him. Smells like Marcus Giles to me. The highest OBP he has ever had was .345. He was 28 for 34 in SB attempts this season, but he posted a 330 OBP. His speed won’t matter if he can’t get on base for AT LEAST a .350 clip. Which would be the highest of his career.

I think Crisp would hit at the bottom of the order. I would also have Escobar lead off and Johnson hit behind him because I believe Escobar is a hitting machine and then Johnson could bunt him over.

D O B had a blog awhile back showing Yunel’s numbers are better at leadoff than elsewhere in the order. Plus KJ is a Leftie, which should make it easier to hit behind the runner. Also if Yunel is on, it’d open a hole for KJ. I definitely would have Yunel lead off.

You are right about Yunel’s #’s leading off but does anyone know what Johnson batted hitting in the 2 hole? How about Crisp leading off with Johnson batting 7th or 8th which would use his obp to our advantage, plus he could drive in some runs from there. Some how I dont think Johnson really likes giving himself up,just resading body language.I do like the idea of getting Crisp as long as the price is not too steep. How about Joey Devine and Matt Esquivel?

Bet on Bobby “platoon” Cox having about 3 different lead-off guys in 2008 anyway.
Johnson had a good OBP but is streaky. Once he hits one of these streaks he will find time on the bench or at least lower in the batting order. Perhaps Prado will replace him for a while also.
Escobar will be given a chance to prove himself at lead-off eventually also.
The CF’er that will be obtained by the Braves will not be a power type hitter like A.J. so look fot this player to receive time at lead-off.

DOB,
I don’t agree with your statement that the Bosox pitching is better.
Beckett is far better than the rest of the pitchers on both teams and Paplebon is much better than Corpas. After that, I don’t think there is a big advantage. Schilling is not the pitcher he was 2-3 years ago, and can be very hittable.
Dice K is the expensive version of Chuck James — a pitch count that takes him out of the game by the 6th inning and very prone to the HR. Lester is a little used Rookie that is unlikely to give (or be trusted to give) them more than 5 innings. The middle of the Red Sox bullpen is no better than the middle of the Rockies pen. The layoff may hurt the Rockies, but the Sox had to go deep into their ALCS and put a lot of innings on Beckett and Schilling (and a lot of pitches on Dice K). The Rockies staff should be much fresher (especially the 2nd time around).
If the Red Sox lose tonight’s game, they are in big trouble, because their biggest advantage in the starting pitching will be negated. If the Rockies lose both games (or if they win tonight and lose tomorrow) they will be in trouble because it will enhance the advantage of Beckett in the rest of the Series.

How do you feel about watching the Series? Heck, it’s too bad the Braves aren’t in it, but it’s the WORLD SERIES! For someone that loves the game enough to come on here and communicate about the Braves games, you’d think they would want to watch the supposed “best of the best” go at it for the championship.

I know those areas well! Yep, this house sits about a half mile from the ocean. Just far enough back to be (relatively) safe from storm surge. There’s a creek that runs from the sound back into the mainland that is less than that, though. And since I’m only 12 ft above sea level, that’s the side I have to watch for flooding, not the ocean itself.

Lew, I’m with you on being stupified by the infatuation with Crisp. Just not a really strong player offensively.
I know some will say the same about me and others repeating the Cameron mantra, but my reasoning for Cameron is merely that it would only take a one- or two-year commitment to get him and he’d take less to play for Atlanta. That’s it.
And everyone who’s played with him says he’s a great clubhouse guy, on top of being a very good defensive player with some pop at the plate.

I’m not big on Dice-K, believe he’s way overpaid and overhyped by ESPN, the “gyro ball” particularly.
But the guy won 15 games in his first season in the majors, had 201 strikeouts (80 walks) in 204 innings, and posted a 1.32 WHIP in the AL.

“Esteemed” Journalist, you DO put spaces between first and last names, and “Myrtle” and “Beach” when you use the Google search engine, right?
Try that. You’ll come to the same Google page I came to. I’ll apologize when you provide the link to the page you came to, using MY name, spelled correctly, spaced correctly, and Myrtle Beach, spelled correctly and spaced correctly. I await your link.
Sorry, Carolina Lady, but he won’t get an apology until a legitimate link to the Google page he came to shows here. His comment wasn’t in jest, it wasn’t made in light, and my reaction to him deserves no follow-up apology. His little digs, with his comical surname and his broken english (meant to be cute, or make us like him, as we grow fond of ‘Fez’ from ‘That 70s Show,’ maybe?) doesn’t jibe with his digs.
Now CL I’ve always liked you, and never had a cross word for you. But I’d love to know why you like to look the other way when folks like JJS or SJA make digs and derogatory comments, but when I, who sign on with my legitimate name do so, you then decide to be the moral compass of the blog?
I appreciate (really do) your judgementalism, when it’s balanced, here. It just hasn’t been in awhile.
So I tell ya what, CL, and Choppin’ Momma, et al, if you, too, want to visit Google and do the same search, please go ahead. Tell me if the page I came to is the same page you come to, sa well.
My dear Carolina Lady, I mean you no ill will, whatsoever. Honest. But admonish everybody instead of choosing to give free passes to select folks. You don’t deal with the character assassinations on a daily basis, from nameless, faceless (and gutless) pseudonyms, so you don’t know what it’s like to put up with it, or turn the other cheek, etc. So, please, be the voice of reason, as per your normal activity, here. Be an impartial judge; google me, as well, and tell us all what you come up with.
SJA… your “act” (yeah, I call it an act - I believe that to be all you are, dude, an ACT) is old.
Just check the last blog to see who ran their gutless mouth first, folks. Those who wanna judge need to do the research. And if you need a refresher? I’ve been a little busy w/work and the move and all to be here blogging, and anybody who’s been a regular here can attest to that.
Meanwhile, SJA, you’ve had free reign to run your worthless septic mouth about me unabashed. And it’s fairly obvious that I get to you, or you’d not be so obsessed that you’d be still speaking of me when I’m away from here for many weeks.
For a man who we’re supposed to believe is a decorated retired marine and 3600 acre horse ranch owner in Virginia, you have an awful lot of free time in your hands for such trivialities.
My excuse? I’m a radio DJ and station manager. My schedule’s far more flexible. Mock the job, farm-hand. I don’t care. I get my checks twice a month, and they pay me well. I don’t need to prove that to you or anybody else to know for myself. Have at it, chummmmmmp.

Well said on Cameron, I have said for a while that he needs to be the CF for the Braves next season. But I think the home discount thing is a little much. It’s not like he is going to pass up a considerable amount more from another team. The Braves are still going to have to offer a 2 year 16 million dollar deal(at least) to snag Cameron and Coco Crisp is signed for the next two years at 4.75 and 5.75 million. If the Red Sox don’t ask for a lot in return, it is worth a shot.
As far as this Bedard talk is concerned, the contract that man gets is going to be a record for a pitcher. If he has a similar 2008 to his 2007, the Orioles will surely part with him before he is a free agent after 2009. I’m thinking 8 years and 176 million dollars.
Now, would I rather have Tex, or a stud pitcher who could have TJ surgery at any time…..
Folks, it is time the Braves develop an Erik Bedard of their own, or at least something close too it. You can’t keep trading prospects for talent that will be able to walk in a year. Sooner or later the pantry will be empty. Need to produce a Cole Hamels at some point.
I know many will disagree with me or have comments stating that not many teams have that sort of young pitching. Well, if you look around the league, almost all of the teams have a pitcher on the sunny side of 30 that has a ton of potential. Real front of the rotation type potential that none of the pitchers we have seen has shown us yet. Jo Jo is a nice pitcher, but his walks will keep him from being a front of the rotation starter. Not to mention the fact that he doesn’t get enough swing and misses. Anyways, I don’t want to knock Jo Jo because I believe he can be a solid major league pitcher, but you know what I mean.

ncscoots-The difference in signing a stud that will cost a ton is how many years are on their contract when we get them. If we were to acquire Haren he woul still have 3 years left on his contract, whereas Bedard has only 2 (or 1?). I don’t think we need to make a trade so big it matches the Teixeira deal. We don’t need to unleash our farm in trades. We need to make a move for a #2 pitcher to pitch as our #3. Sign Glavine, set. Gives us a deep rotation along with depth. Not only that but we won’t have to give up Escobar, B.Jones, Rohrbough, Hanson, or Schafer.
Snell might cost a lot, but Arroyo might not demand too much but Blanton is probably our best bet. He will demand a little more but no Escobar or Shafer and probably not Rohrbough or Hanson. Maybe Renteria and Devine.

You’re right on flood ins, choppinmama! And I’ve recently learned that regular home owner’s ins does not cover “any movement of the earth.” The home of a friend suddenly settled/shifted about 3 inches overnight resulting in cracks, gaps, etc. Mucho bucks for repairs.
It’s so dry here (21”+ below normal) I think the underground aquifers so low, leaving “caverns” that lessen support for the ground above. Think I’ll investigate earthquake ins…..
Rockies, PLEASE pull this off and shut up ESPN-types! I’d bet that instead of covering the Rockies win, they’d be in Boston with endless stupid interviews of “what went wrong”, “how did they lose”, etc. (Don’t get me started on those airheads!)

I had been posting under the name MS for the last year plus, but since we have another MS here now I’m changing it up to avoid confusion. (I guess I was naive to thing that my initials would last as a unique name on the ever growing baseball/mib blog!)
DOB, I hear you on Bukowski’s. I was up in Boston in September and we went there at the end of the night both Friday AND Saturday nights. It really is a cool place, with a great beer selection and excellent music from all across the board. They played such a wide selection of stuff; Friday was more mainstream classic rock but Saturday featured everything from hip-hop to metal, which I loved. It seemed right up your alley.
Also, I really liked the Blueberry beer at Boston Beer Works right next to Fenway. I normally don’t like fruit flavored beers, but this one actually has a bunch of blueberries in the bottom and really had a great flavor imo. It was something different that I really enjoyed.
I was also lucky enough to get to Fenway for the Sox-Yanks Sunday night game featuring Clemens-Schilling. That place was going berserker for that game, so I can’t even imagine what it was like for Game 6 & 7 in the ALCS and the Series starting tonight.
Be safe and enjoy yourself tonight!

why would anyone make up something so incriminating as doing a google search for rr and finding a calabash restaurant? and this certainly vindicates julia, who, many (including this journalist) have misunderstood and under-appreciated for julia’s candor and now-apparent wisdom.

Hey DOB, too bad the NL didn’t get the home-field advantage by winning the All-Star game this year, huh? Instead of Boston where it’s cloudy, rainy, and in the 40s, you’d be here in Denver, where it’s sunny and in the 70s…
Well, see you this weekend! It should (although with Denver you never know) be in the sunny and in the 60s Sat-Mon…

I notice most everybody giving a potential line up has Mac then Jeff, Everyone has their own opinion of things but I would NEVER bat Mac in front of Frenchy. Nothing against Mac , who is a much more disciplined hitter than Jeff. But Jeff has that something special with 2 outs and runners on. Mac isn’t bad in that dept. but not as good as Jeff. Mac also leads the team in double plays. Instead of Jeff hitting 5th and coming up consistently with runner in scoring position, he is leading off the next inning way too often. Also Mac is S-L-O-W. He has cost Jeff extra bases often and at least 15 RBIs this year. Almost anyone scores from 2nd and most from 1st on a double, But Mac can’t get past 3rd. I like Mac but I would bat him behind Jeff. Plus it would increase Mac’s RBI potential too. Just MHO

The Daily Buzz (Fly on Wall Report No. 029)
(Fly language translated for your convenience).
After Mr.’s Burns, Schuerholz and Fly finished off a hearty lunch of cheeseburgers, onion rings, fries, chocolate milkshakes and Florida Red Velvet cake, Mr. Schuerholz excused himself.
Prior to beginning the Fly Mutant Origin session, Mr. Burns gave advice that would forever change the way Mr. Fly would present his Daily Buzz interview format. Mr. Burns, in his storytelling wisdom, suggested that Fly consider using all caps for the interviewer/ee names for the purpose of clarity. Fly quickly agreed to take this sage advice, thanked Ken and promised to let his publisher-translator enact this change immediately, if not sooner.
The Fly-Burns documentary interview continues:
MR BURNS: so, picking up where we left it: in a split second inside the Telepod, you had the brain of your “buddy” and he had your brain. Instantly you could talk and he was left a mute, brainless human-fly.
MR. FLY: The change for him was gradual, for me instantaneous. Oh, he is called worse than brainless by some critics, but is not true. Me remember only the good smart talented person. Today he’s just not the same jovial person he once was. He could “act” normal, even play different roles, then something would set him off and turn him into a ravenous fly-monster. Me would try to talk with him, cajole him or compliment him on his talent…but nothing doing. He seemed on a mission. Would never answer me…just stare past.
MR BURNS: what usually sets him off?
MR. FLY: oh, things like food…sweets and cheese mostly or maybe sugar. Oh, and Tommy Glavine seemed to get on his bad side. Maybe the union label?
MR. BURNS: did he behave that way before the event?
MR. FLY: me didn’t notice because me was just a normal house-fly, but me heard he was very nice to people and always said hello when they greeted him. He was always an “everyman” persona. Now he seems preoccupied with just a few people. Maybe they provide some food he needs.
MR BURNS: ah Ha! I’ve got it!!! Ok, Let me bring this home: John Schuerholz is an old friend of yours, right? You’re always visiting with him, right?
MR. FLY: yes and yes. Mr. John and me like to read and visit fine restaurants and go to big meetings together. That’s why he wears suspenders…to sneak me through corporate security so I can report inside news.
MR BURNS: then let me recap here: His initials are JS. He is currently negotiating with Mr. Glavine, along with Mr. Wren of course. He was just in this room but he had to leave when the Red Velvet cake arrived…and he took it with him. So, this may seem way too obvious…John Schuerholz is your mutant origin daddy!
MR. FLY: ha ha ha…no no no. Mr. John my buddy. He also my Braves inside information deep throat. Gives secrets to only me. He not me daddy, he buddy. Oh, it is so sad just thinking about my Geechee-daddy. So painful. Can we rest now?
MR BURNS: hmmm…there I thought for sure…so sorry. Painful? Ok then, let me just ask for one more clue in our little game. Then we can take a break. Ok?
MR. FLY: okee dokee. Me like games. Baseball is best.
MR BURNS: all right, we’ve established that his initials are JS. What is the first name?
MR. FLY: jimmy.
MR BURNS: jimmy? Hmmm. Ok, just a few more questions…what was Jimmy’s profession? Is he, uh…was he creative?
MR. FLY: oh, yes yes. Very talented was Jimmy.
MR BURNS: would our readers on this blog be familiar with Jimmy S.?
MR. FLY: heavens yes. Everyone…mostly. He so funny sometimes. Very few detractors. Mostly trolls.
Mr. Burns: this may be very easy to figure out…it’s so close to home I think I may already have it. Is Jimmy in the “news writing” business per se?
Mr. Fly: yes…he was once.!!! Wow! How you know?
MR BURNS: does he have an imaginary friend that he fondly refers to as a little furry baby mammal?
MR. FLY: oh my, yes yes!!! Mr. Ken you are good at this. You could be a sleuth reporter like me. But the furry creature is not very small in real life.
MR BURNS: would his “work” have a recognizable, screwball, eccentric and comedic twist to it?
MR. FLY: definately. He was also romantic. Loved pies and cakes, wrote homespun poetry, walked his garden and loved his birds. My mutant-daddy was a kind, soft-spoken human. Oh, the humanity!
MR BURNS: alrighty then…think I have it…is he by chance, occasionally referred to as, “esteemed”?
MR. FLY: many, many nice names for Jimmy. Awards too. Urp. zzzghiccup!
MR BURNS: are you all right Fly? Subject making you too emotional? Getting choked up?
MR. FLY: sorry Mr. Ken. Me burp and hiccup and fall asleep for a second. Head is bobbing up and down like Howdy Doody. Big, big lunch make me very sleepy. Sometimes big is better…like big cheeseburger!
MR BURNS: we probably should have waited until after the sessions to eat so much. Anyway, where were we? Oh, so now can you tell us Jimmy’s last name? I think I already know, but let’s tell the folks, what say?
MR. FLY: zzz, urp, zz, hic-zzz, zzhh-bbbbb, zzzzz…
MR BURNS: mr. Fly? Mr. Fly???
(Due to technical difficulties, the Mutant Fly Origin interview must be paused. Mr.’s Fly and Burns will return after a brief respite.)

Pretty much irrelevant, since Braves wouldn’t attempt to trade for such a stud unless they were more than a little certain they could sign him to an extension. That would be the whole point of making such a trade in the first place.

Well we will find out won’t we. Whether or not the Braves attempt to sign Tex or not, if they don’t sign him to a long term deal, those prospects are still gone and are never coming back. I just hope the Braves understood that Tex is a Scott Boras client and that the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets will have openings at first base at the end of 2008.
Yankees- Giambi’s huge contract is up and they get 22 million off the books after 2008
Red Sox- No more Manny after 2008. They have a 20 million dollar option for the 36 year old if they want to exercise it. Why not sign Tex to a huge deal and move Youkilis over to 3rd?
Mets- No more Delgado or Pedro. Over 25 million to spend.
Those are the teams the Braves will have to go up against to sign Teixeira. I’m bringing it up because the Braves traded a ton for him, and I’m not sure if them being a little more than certain about signing him will work when the Yankees offer him 8 years and 200 million.
Could or Would the Braves make an offer like that?
Would Tex leave over 50 million on the table to sign with the Braves just because he went to school at Georgia Tech???

Don’t know where the conversation went about this year’s WS, but my take, for what it’s worth, is that Colorado is perfectly content to let the vaunted, American League Pennant winning, Boston Red Sox - along with the Eastern Sports Network talking heads - have all the headlines, interviews, predictions for victory, yatta, yatta, yatta. I don’t think the Rockies are in awe, they’re simply trying not to stir the pot with some ‘in your face’ predictions about the fact that Colorado plays damn good baseball and, frankly, has a better group of baseball players than the Bean-Towners. Don’t believe me? Just watch. By the second or third game you’ll be asking yourself, how in blazes did this bunch of overweight, one-dimensional, slow, guys - aka Boston Red Sox - win anything? They’ll start tonight with Beckett and continue with the guy I despise the most in the ‘Bigs’ Shilling. For example, whataya think of this statement in response to the ‘layoff’ the CR’s have had? ‘It wasn’t so tough getting some representative competition for simulated games this past week. All we had to do is make a call to the local ‘over-40’ league and we had all we wanted’.
Colorado is a baseball team and will make believers out of ‘em all over the next week or so. Although I do think they should have put a roof on that field in Denver.

Tex was a good move for the Braves but just not enough left in the tank when he arrived. The major reason the Braves fell short was the sub standard year at the plate by Andruw Jones.
Let’s wait a bit longer before we make a rush to judgment. The crystal ball just does not start too pick up well until March or so.

Flange and Tyler-You don’t trsade Hansen and Rohrbaugh. You just don’t, because if you do, you will continue to hear nothing but complaints about us not developing our own stud pitchers.
Efrim-I think a major reason for JoJo’s walks is his insecurity. I think once he gets to know the hitters a little better and gets more aggressive and challenges hitters more, that his walks will go down. He may never be an ace, but I’m willing to bet that with minor adjustments, he will be an upper rotation pitcher, as will Hanson and Rohrbaugh. I would rather not trade any of them, even if it means finishing out of the money for another year.

Lew-I completely agree. I was exlaining how we should keep them because they are going to be studs. Give them a year or two and one of those guys is going to be in Atlanta.

I don’t dimiss your notion or take what you say lightly. It’s just not easy when you’re the target, and none of you “let it go” folks are ever the target.
Ron, many of the daily visitors to this blog DO find themselves as a target, albeit not to the extent that you do. The reason that it is not a recurring event for most of us is because of the fact that most of us do not respond to the attacker.
You might remember some month’s ago when Braveheart posted the Rookie Rules of Engagement. I humbly offered my two cents:
Please do not feed the trolls.
It is a rule that I try very hard to live by, even when someone’s taking potshots at you. I suggest that you ignore them too. You’ll find that it works.
Besides, what is the real downside of being attacked on a blog? It’s not going to hurt you, no one that knows you in real life is going to think less of you. It just doesn’t matter. Sometimes turning the other cheek works.
So what if some bored dude somewhere picks on you, calls you names and threatens to attack you (which you know damn well isn’t going to happen)? Is it really and truly going to matter in five years? Five days? Five minutes? No and no and no!
Ron, let it go. For yourself and for the rest of the “good” denizens.

OK, the fly gets a “B+”, but the hippie/surfer dude still gets a “C”, and a pat on the back.

So was the post made in principle or be somebody hoping to have us presume he’s a school principal grading our spelling and phonic ability?
Oh, and Red Sox in 6. Rockies are/were a great story this year, but more importantly, show how weak the NL was, on the whole, this season.

Jesus Ron, you do need help. Now, you are assuming everything is “aimed” at you. I was having some fun with SG and someone who posted as Old English Teacher ONLY. This is the only time, today, that I have addressed you and the LAST time. But PLEASE get over it!

rr, you look small right now. remember that you invited all bloggers to google ron roberts, myrtle beach. journalist did just that. much to this journalist’s surprise the original captain benjamin’s calabash seafood restaurant appeared on the page.
coincidence? likely so. but it did appear.
now, jimmy smith has no apology to make to rr. anyone here who does the search will find the same results. instead of smiling and having a laugh at the irony, rr chooses to lash out at this journalist and throw insults.
and now rr is asking jimmy smith for journalistic integrity. where is rr’s integrity? rr said rr would apologize if journalist was right about the calabash seafood. now, rr says rr won’t apologize because it was number six on a page of how many returns?
now, rr paints this journalist with the same paint brush rr has used on long-time adversary sja.
well, now that rr has straightened out this journalist and the lady bloggers here and most everyone else, the fact remains that when one googles ron roberts, myrtle beach, one returns the original captain benjamin’s calabash seafood restaurant!
that one was for julia.
