Maddux … if you only knew
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With Greg Maddux in town and set to face John Smoltz on Wednesday for the first time since 1992, the Maddux stories were abundant on Monday at Turner Field.
Unfortunately, most of them are too gross and/or profane to share with you folks in this forum. Let’s just say, the future first-ballot Hall of Famer Maddux was/is legendary for his pranks and dry wit, and much of it is stuff that would bring both you and your 12-year-old son to tears in laughter.
But here’s one story I think we can use here.
It’s 1993, and hotshot prospect Chipper Jones is up with the big club for the first time. As Chipper told it yesterday, he beat out a swinging-bunt single for his first major league hit.
Jones, already aware of Maddux’s proclivity for profanity and locker-room humor, asked coach Pat Corrales to keep an eye on the baseball as it was retrieved and brought to the Braves’ dugout. Specifically, Chipper noticed Maddux on the dugout steps and wanted to make sure he wasn’t up to something.
But play continued, Chipper returned focus to the game, etc. After he got back to the dugout, the ball was presented to him.
“I came off the field, and sure enough, there was a big ‘ol loogie on it,” Jones said. “[Maddux had] picked his nose and wiped it on the baseball.”
Chipper smiled as he related the story. “If I had known then what I know now, I would probably have kept it on it. But I wiped it off.”
In other words, if he’d known how many more similar Maddux moments he would witness over the years, Chipper would’ve kept the marred ball as a memento of the true Maddux, or the side of him that most outside the game are unaware of.
I’ll leave it at that. But I will tell you, Maddux, beyond having more baseball knowledge and intuition than anyone I’ve ever encountered, is also one of the funniest guys I’ve ever been around, even if I was only on the perimeter.
If we played baseball, we all would’ve wanted him for a teammate, without question. Not just because he’s one of the best two pitchers of the past 25 years — him and Clemens, in my opinion — but because he kept a clubhouse so loose.
OK, on to a couple other matters .
Braves need rookie starter Anthony Lerew to step up tonight. Yes, I’m the master of the obvious with that statement. But the Braves really do need to start getting some good starts from those not named Smoltz or Hudson.
Chuck James’ latest early exit (3-2/3 innings last night) left him 1-3 with a 6.66 ERA in his past five starts.
Braves starters are 10-10 and rank 10th in the NL with a 4.43 ERA and 11th in innings (181). The opponents’ on-base percentages and the ERAs are already ugly or getting ugly for three of the five: Mark Redman (.429, 10.62), Kyle Davies (.371, 6.41), Chuck James (.363, 4.84).
Lance Cormier hasn’t thrown off a mound yet, so he’s not even got a rehab assignment planned yet, which means he’s at least 3-4 weeks away from returning. Probably more. And at this point, I wouldn’t know what to expect from him, he’s been out of real competition for such a long stretch.
James walked four last night, and the bullpen walked four more, which raised the bullpen walks total to a major league-high 65 in 98-2/3 innings, only 20 fewer walks than strikeouts. Not good, folks.
Where’s the offense? The Braves have hit .232 with no home runs and 19 total runs in their past five games, after batting .316 with a whopping 17 homers and 61 runs in the previous nine games.
Anyone should have known they’d run into a slump, but the problem is when all the guys who were scorching suddenly are cooling off a little or a lot, or at least most of them are.
Brian McCann is 6-for-28 (.214) with two doubles and three RBIs in his past nine games, this only a few days after his four consecutive two-hit games.
Jeff Francoeuris 3-for-18 with one double in five games, after going .457 with six extra-base hits and seven RBIs in his previous eight games.
Kelly Johnson is 1-for-9 with four strikeouts and no walks in his past couple of games, and has no multi-hit games in his past seven _ after putting up eight multi-hit games in an 11-game stretch.
Chipper Jones is 0-for-10 with no RBIs in his past four games, after hitting .341 with 18 extra-base hits (10 homers), 20 runs and 22 RBIs in the previous 21 games.
Andruw Jones wasn’t exactly surging before, but he’s 0-for-18 with one RBI and three walks in his past five games. In 17 home games, he’s hit .158 (9-for-57), second-lowest home average among NL qualifiers, ahead of only a guy in Pittsburgh named LaRoche (.136). Andruw has one multi-hit home game all season.
But enough fretting. Let’s rock:

By the way, I was thinking this last night…am I correct that McCann hasn’t hit a HR since the opening series against the Phils?? If so, that is one heck of a drought. Actually looked like he was pressing for one last night with a couple of pop-up swings.

Here’s mine: Smoltz and Hudson walk the walk, the others just walk, and walk, and walk.
Chuck needs to work on that 6.66 era, that can’t be good for anybody.

If Marvin freeman or Pedro Borbon — or say, Mike Maddux — had done the same crude thing to Chipper’s souvenir, it would rightly be seen as a revolting act. But since it’s a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer who did it, it’s regarded as a side-splitter.
Anyway, thanks, Dave, for a gut-churning tale of dumb jocks and their hilarious hijinks. Really made my afternoon.

Quoting from the article that talked about the lack of African-Americans on the Braves roster “But the fact of the matter is if they put resources into recruiting here in the United States, and more specifically here in Atlanta, there are talented players here.”
ummm true. but I don’t think the Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow-PUSH Coalition know a lick about Braves roster.
Jeff Francoeur - Atlanta Brian Mccann - Atlanta Kyle Davie - Decatur Chuck James - Atlanta etc etc
so the Braves are obvious NOT ignoring the Atlanta when they are scouting players and there ARE talented players in Metro Atlanta BUT they just aren’t blacks
If Jesse Jackson’s posse want to come out and say that the Braves (John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox etc etc.) racist, then they should come out and do so. But blindly accusing / demanding a team to do something is ridiculous
On another note, I don’t see Chinese people complaining about the lack of Chinese player in the NBA (1) even though there are 1.3 billion of us in the world. (maybe the NBA should scout China more)
Issues like affirmative action and what Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton try to make a problem just always bother me because they never have the facts straight

TennPaul, in your last post you said, “Every one of those [BaseballReference splits] shows that, when he swings the bat, he isn’t that successful. But who are we to say he needs to adjust his swing?”
But his career batting average is only .266. Andruw has never been a great hitter when he swings the bat. The hits he does get are often extra-base hits (hence the .504 career slugging pct.) and he draws a decent enough amount of walks to keep his OBP respectable (.345 career).
How is his career clutch hitting that much different than his overall hitting?

Saw an interesting article on SI.com today where they have Brian McCann rated as the 9th Current Most Valuable Player in all of baseball. Not the NL. ALL of baseball. The second highest catcher (of course, Mauer is rated higher, at 2nd, and Pujols is 1st) That’s the highest for the Braves, and almost 40 spots higher than Andruw Jones, the only other Brave on the list. Looks like SI.com knows something that Genius Bobby doesn’t. Othewise, we might see McCann hitting a little cleanup, providing a kick-start to the offense (if his finger is healthy) instead of watching Andruw flail about like he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing or what pitches are coming.
I mean, that’s freaking awesome. We have the 9th current MVP in all of baseball, and the 2nd best player in all of baseball at the most important position on the diamond. So can you all STOP (and the Braves Brass need to hurry up and stop kidding themselves) the insane Salty talk. That kid needs to be moved to 1st base (where Thorman looks very replacable) so he can become the Next Big Hurt and our emergency catcher.
I knew McCann was awesome, and it’s nice to see the National Media see so as well. I mean, the kid is rated ABOVE AFraud! Isn’t that something?

I was in the Army and we pulled pranks like that as often as possible. That’s just the way guys are. It makes for fun stories to tell the kids. Okay, maybe some of them have to wait until the kids are a little older. I’m sure the funniest Mad Dog stories can’t be shared here, but I always appreciate the dugout and clubhouse stories. Thanks for that one, DOB.

Is there any reason to believe Lerew will pull it of tonight besides our sincere hopes and wishful thinking? Any news on the AJ thing, still batting 4th tonigh?. In your earlier blog I suggested to sent him to the minors. Knowing people from Curacao (I am one myself!) if somebody points out stubborness, we only answer it with becoming more stubborn. A stint in RIchmond would really clear his mind and put him back on earth. All other strategies are bound to fail. He will only become more and more an ironic persiflage of himself, of what he could have done

Fine choice of Isbell/DBT for the day. Got that on my iTunes. Will let those guitars blast later when everyone else leaves the office. If you want to get a sampling of just how Maddux is behind closed doors, there was an interview with David Wells in spring training — can’t remember if it was SI or a wire service — where Wells said Maddux does all the stuff people think Wells does. “He’s one sick dude.” (quote from Wells)

A story told on the air by Skip Caray about Maddux:
After a home game, the team was leaving for an extended road trip. Maddux overheard one of the clubhouse boys telling another that he sure wanted to go to Texas (?) to attend a cousin’s wedding while the team was away, but he didn’t think his old car would make it.
Maddux tossed him the keys to his BMW (or whatever he was driving at the time) and told the kid to go have a nice time at the wedding; just put the car back in the parking lot when he got back.
Now that I like!
On the “other” topic relating to favoritism: I’ve never heard our National Anthem translated into Italian, German, Swiss, Polish or any other language. Neither have I seen signs posted all over creation in those languages. Hmm, why Spanish? Just a thought.

Nope, never played ball above youth level, but there’s a lot of gentlemen like Stan Musical and Cal Ripken Jr. and Willie Stargell who did, and I doubt they ever saw any humor in leaving a booger on a teammate’s ball.
I dearly hope Chipper kept the tradition alive Sunday by taking a dump on Saltalamacchia’s first Major League hit. I’ll bet they were rolling in the dugout floor!

Matthew At The SLC,
I just looked into that article on si.com. It’s done by Baseball Prospectus (so a lot of you guys and gals will ignore it even though McCann is #9).
It says the words “ultimate fantasy draft” but it’s not really about fantasy baseball. It takes into account a players total game, not just fantasy stats.
The concept is you run a team and basically the same contract and service-time rules apply but every player is treated as rookie after you draft them and price doesn’t matter.
Another warning for some of you: It does take into account PECOTA projections (although it’s not limited to statistical analysis).

To all blogophiles of faith, please pray for Chad Cordero of the Nats. He has been put on the bereavement list, and is on his way to CA to be with his grandmother, who is suffering from brain cancer. I can tell you from experience, losing a grandparent to cancer is awful. Even though the Nats are division foes, I would suggest that this is a little bigger than baseball.
Also, I was called away at 9:30 p.m. yesterday to the home of one of my church member’s kids. Her 18-yr old grandson committed suicide last night, and I was there to see them remove the body, etc. It has been a very trying 18 hours or so for the entire family, and for myself as well.
Somehow, baseball takes a back seat. Life is precious, friends, use each day to make the best impact you can in the lives of others.

DOB, thanks for the Maddux insight. My favorite thing to watch for when he pitches is his complete lack of control of the F bomb, the sh bomb, and the GD bomb on the mound. It’s so articulate, so pronounced. And the cameras catch it in all of its raw glory. Good for a two-minute laugh every time.

I could be wrong but I believe that African Americans represent 13% or so of the American Population. So, not counting Edgar and Andruw ( who as everyone knows aren’t black) when Willie Harris plays left the Braves starting 9 is 11% African American.
Not that far off from being representative of the population.

Joe Morgan may be a Hall of Famer, but sometimes I wonder what game he’s watching (or not watching) when ESPN forces him and the usually very good Jon Miller on us for Sunday night baseball. Morgan misses a bunch of stuff, and the notion of having a guy who’s a career .266 hitter in the 3-hole is absurd. They’ll make him chase bad pitches and then pitch around Chipper, if he’s cleanup. If you drop Andruw, drop him to fifth. Put Chipper at 4 and McCann at 3. Now you’re L-R-L-L against a righty and L-R-L-R against a lefty, with two lefties who hit lefthanded pitching well (I know as currently constituted it’s L-R-L-R against RHP and L-R-R-R against LHP, but that last R isn’t hitting anybody’s HP right now).

Ernesto, I really don’t know what to think of your comment that Andruw and Edgar are not black. Racism is absolutely the most arrogant stupidity people can commit, but who decides whether I am black or not? What kind of lunacy is that??. I said earlier, I am from the same island as Andruw, and yes it is a dutch colony and we do have a dutch passport but we still are who we are. Black and proud of it. We descent from former slaves (Curacao used to be a trading port for this kind of trade). Different here is that nobody judges about another and especcially not if you are black enough to be called black……yeeh

I’m trying to manage my expectations on Lerew tonight. Lincecum was a man among boys in AAA, just silly-scary-Bingo-ERA good, and got pasted pretty well in his ML debut. Lerew, on the other hand, has been at least been up before, though not as a starter, so maybe that will take some jitters away. David,
I completely agreed with your irritation last night about the uproar on race (and your advice to either read it or not read it, but move on). I thought your tone was a bit condescending when dismissing the confusion about the ethnicity of certain players, however. Hopefully I’m mistaken, because I love your blog.
It is not necessarily an indication of either racism or ignorance to have a question about the ethnicity of players from Central America, South America, or one of the islands in the Caribbean. In fact, there are many people (and players) of African descent who live in Central America, South America, and the islands in the Caribbean. These people speak Spanish, and none of them would be correctly identified as African-Americans (in fact, that term is viewed as a pejorative one by many non-Americans of African descent).
Knowing that many of these countries possess a sizable population of people descended from some combination of African and French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Dutch ancestry, am I therefore a racist if I have a question about the race of a player? Neither curiosity nor confusion about someone’s race should be off limits.
I assumed Andruw volunteered to wear Jackie Robinson’s jersey because he had some, however minute, African ancestry. What’s the problem with that? I am wrong or shamefully ignorant for assuming that? It’s not that strange… . In fact, it’s an informed assumption.

just had a quick look at Lerew’s effort in 06 - had forgotten how awful it was! He carries a major league ERA from last year of 22 into this game!
Apparently according to Bobby he has been “lights out” this year though in the Minors, but he would say that would he not.
Should be an interesting couple of nights, we have two brand new starters today and then the old war horses go at it tomrrow, should be fun and hopefully all we want to talk about is the baseball.

I wonder what Maddog thinks of Andruw’s hitting approach? I doubt that we’ll ever know … but my quess is that he’s licking his chops in anticipation.
Having one’s cake and eating it too … from the previous Blog It would be dumb for him to go chasing pitches out of the strikezone … goodness!
Why does everyone keep calling Andruw’s misadventures at the plate a slump … it’s an ineffective, inexcusable, highly exploitable approach, it is it is … and were it anyone other than our hero … in less than a Curacoan minute, we’d be clamoring for him to be placed on the DL for medical reasons; assuming of course that mental illness qualifies.
To think that Andruw can’t hit is inane … his performance before reaching stardom bespoke a .350 major league power hitting, base stealing centerfielder.
To be critical of Braves’ management for “allowing” Andruw to fail to reach his potential a hitter is nonproductive other than the hope that someone reads it and is prompted to take some “affirmative” action … what’s done is done … but it’s obvious that someone did a good job of developing his enormous talent from the ground up.
Why in the world did they stop when they got to the neck?!
He’s only 30 … there’s still time!
That’s what we were saying when he was 20 and 21 and 22 and 23 … talk’s cheap … don’t you think it time to do something about it?
No question but that ESPN is wrong as usual … Andruw’s best position in the order is ninth … I really do think that, for reasons previously given … but it does give the opposing pitcher the added option of walking our pitcher without being critized.
My teenaged grandson watched a game recently … “Andruw Jones sure doesn’t know much about hitting … he’s not very smart is he” … I don’t think it was a question.

Terrence Moore is such a f******* moron. he just said that curt schilling made those comments about Bonds and steroids because he was going for John Kerry’s spot in the Senate.?. As it was written on the braves website, the reason for lerew’s success this year is he stopped throwing his split finger pitch, the pitch that batters began to drool over when they saw it coming.

GRINCH more q-jet info…you mentioned on the other blog how it bogged , coughed, just as the secondaries opened. Does that late a carb still have a typical choke pulloff/vacuum break/whathaveyou, on the passenger side of the carb? If so, take the little vacuum hose off it, and take a longer hose(Perhaps from the windshield washer injectors) Put it over the nipple, and suck! Hold the suction either with your tounge, or if you are fast, with your finger. The rod in the Diaphragm should stay pulled in with the vacuum holding it. If the rod in the Diaphragm releases right away , then it’s ruptured, and needs to be replaced. They often break since they are forever moving…

Last night the Mutts moved Carlos Delgado [.214] from the 4 spot and put Moises Alou [.350 something] hitting cleanup. Smart move Willie Randolph. A hint to Bobby Cox. You can’t keep hitting a .220 hitter at cleanup when the 3 guys in front of him have those high on base percentages. It’s a rally killer for sure. Take a clue from someone that hasn’t managed long.

it’s not a gross maddux story by any means, but i like the one where he was pitching and got bases-loaded with no outs (or runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs). cox came out to ask him if he was alright, and he said, “yeah, i’ve got them right where i want them. i’m gonna get this guy to pop-out to chipper, then the next guy’s gonna ground into a double play.” and that’s just what happened.

Salty’s catching tonight, in part to give McCann (finger) more rest, in part because Salty’s familiar with Lerew, etc.
Renteria’s back in lineup.
Rupert, you’re asking me about Lerew before he’s even made a start. Ask me again after tonight’s game, because anything I say right now could be rendered fairly irrelevent if he pitches great or terribly….
Cormier’s making progress. Talked to him today and he threw without any pain or discomfort yesterday, was going to throw from a little farther today, then have a bullpen in a couple days. He think he’ll only need a few minor league starts and a couple of bullpens.

The Braves really need to get on a roll here. It seems the Braves just can’t put together a 4-6 game winning streak. They win 1 game then lose one game, win 2 games then lose one game, win one game lose 2 games….
Someone other than Hudson and Smoltz needs to start pitching to give this team a chance to put some distance between the us and the Mets. This is a great opportunity to gain some ground on the Mets because they are hurting for starting pitching and are on a pretty tough road trip.
I know the Braves are better than they have been playing over the past few days, but they had better start winning or we may just start slipping. I know it is still early, but the Mets are not a team we need to fall very far behind.

It’s obvious that Andruw needs to change his tune … how about “don’t let the stars … “?
My last post just appeared on the previous Blog …
“Shaun, I also don’t think he’s getting himself out in clutch situations … you may be right … neither do I but somebody sure is!
When you said he didn’t swing at pitches out of the strikezone, a joke … right?
As an aside, Methinks 10Paul has been hitting homeruns for a long, long time.
Three out of four is still there to be had … enjoy!
Now, back to real time … It’s interesting because I’ve being using the refresh button for at least the last 30 minutes … that, plus the fact that the one above it was a 4:51 to me from the Savannah Guy.
Intothemystic’s 4:22 on the previous Blog was an excellent read too! However, I don’t understand the notion that the term “African-American” is considered pejorative by many Non-Americans of Africian decent … is it not more likely they are pleased not to be “mistakenly identified”.
I would think that many Negroids, who are themselves Americans, would consider being identified as “African-American” as pejorative … just as I’m not too sure I would want to be identifed as an European-American.
“European American” is an unfortunate term in that it is much too broad … it relates to three continents … North America, South America, and Europe … goodness!
No, American suits me just fine; thank you very much!

Berigan…swapping short and long hoses, nipples and suction, being fast with tongue and finger to maintain a vacuum around the diaphram…what amongst those words/actions do you imagine I would construe as dirty? You must have a very different opinion of my libido than most folks; people who know me well know I practically insist on showers taking place before those activities. Actually, that’s not true either. :-) I’ll be back around her tommorrow afternoon, where I’ll withdraw my little hose, replace it with my tongue and see what happens. I sure to god hope that diaphram doesn’t rupture; she’s expensive enough as she is. And don’t get any ideas, folks; we’re talking about a classic car (often referred to as female) and a part on her engine that mixes air and fuel. Get your minds out of the gutter. The entire lineup is in a funk right now, the hitters and starters with the exception of Smoltz and Hudson. The bullpen is about the only bright spot.
Andruw simply refuses to play team baseball by not even trying to hit to right field with RISP or with two strikes on him. At least he could give that concession. So, to answer the question from the last blog I’d move him down to 6th for sure. As a matter of fact I’d platoon the cleanup spot between McCann and Francoeur depending on whether a RHP or LHP was starting.
Otherwise I’d leave the lineup alone, for sure not mess with KJ. Harris is doing fine and can hit anywhere in the lineup it seems. I’d find a way to keep him in there. Diaz is coming up recently but Harris is the better of the two in defense and is doing just as well or better with the bat.
A move downward to the No. 6 slot could just be what Andruw needs to get his attention. He is in need of something of that order. I still don’t think of him as being overly bright so a shock may be what is needed to get his attention.

Another Maddux story that I once heard on a WSB power lunch…
Marcus Giles was knocked out while playing a ground ball from a base runner running from 1st to 2nd. He was really woozy in the dugout. As he came to he asked Maddux why Bobby Cox pulled him from the game.
Maddux said “You don’t remember?”
Giles said “No.”
Maddux told him he had wet his pants and Bobby had to pull him from the game.
Giles started to believe him.
I laughed for days upon hearing this.

back to last night’s blog - who would have thought that the weak link offensively this year would be in CF? Players always ask for more money when the have good years, but I have a hard time believing Boras will decrease his contract demands if Andruw continues with this poor performance. Even if he did, I would not want to sign him to a 5-7 year deal at $18 million/year because I would be afraid this is the start of a decline. AJ should be moved down in the order to get his attention and to give him time to work out his mechanics and get his groove back.
I see that Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow coalition had to meet with the Braves because they don’t have the right quota of players. I wonder if they meet with the Hawks because their racial makeup does not correspond to the overall population. Give me a break. The sports teams these days will play the best possible player period and that is the way it should be. For the teams there is too much riding on wins and losses - money and jobs. Managers get fired and teams lose money when they lose and I believe they do play the best available player regardless of race or nationality. I have never heard one complaint about Cox being hard on someone or sitting one because of their ethnic background. The best player should get the minutes no matter where they come from or what color of their skin, and anybody who gives racial preferences should be held accountable. I think Rainbow is barking up the wrong tree here.
Any rumblings about James being sent back to Richmond to find his control if only for 2 weeks? I love James and think he will be great for years to come but the past 3 weeks have been painful to watch

Actually if you go back to the hitless 8th inning on Sunday against the Dodgers, we now have 3 hits over our last 13 innings.
I’m telling you. I don’t care if I have a rotation of Sandy Koufax, Cy Young, Greg Maddux and Bob Gibson. If I’m managing a team facing the Braves in the post season, I’m starting a rookie that they have NEVER seen before in game 1. I don’t care if it’s a kid from “A” Ball, if they haven’t seen him, and he throws strikes (because we’ve all seen the Braves take advantage of nervous rookies that can’t get the ball over the plate), he can literally SHUT DOWN a Bobby Cox led offense.

Andruw is affecting all Braves hitters this past week. And it ain’t pretty tonight…again. Seems like groundhog day. Cox please tell Dru to fein a back strain, put him on day2dayDL, let him hit balls in his basement, get the rest of the team sparked. You won’t see AJ work out of this by himself in less than another 3 weeks (ok you can mark that down and play it back at the end of May).
DOB were you gonna talk to Cox with all these suggestions about batting order, right?

A few notes of interest.
1) Everybody keeps talking about the Smoltz-Maddux duel tomorrow and how it’s gonna be a “good one” or a “dandy”.
I find it hard to believe that other than the sentimental value and interest to Braves fans, that it’s gonna be any better pitched than tonights game was.
2) Our starters are 10-10, Josh Beckett is about to get his 7th win.
WOW!!
3) Judging by his new found “relaxed” approach since the cautionary MRI, Gonzalez (and his 1.26) ERA has been EVERY BIT AS GOOD, if not better than advertised, while LaRoche has been about the only player more pathetic than Andruw in the NL. (Imagine if he was still here - how would those 4-5 holes in the order look….YIKES).
Making this trade an early victory for the Braves, and that’s without knowing what McCauley Culkin….er, Brent Lillebridge is gonna do down the road.

I’m really impressed with the job Lerew did tonight. Win or lose, the kid came out and pitched well, kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win it. Another good night by the pen and I love having Soriano and Gonzalez out there late in the game.

Glad to see Andruw coming through, with a hit to left center. Lerew has a nasty change that tails away from hitters. If he can stay in control and pitch down, with his three pitches (see Chuck James) he might be the third pitcher we’ve so desperately needed. Possibly. Hope to see him again Sunday (I’ll be there, sorry just exited to see the Braves live this year).

Keep wickman - these two are great, but will tire if we have to use them every day, we can’t keep having close games and using them up - with Wickman around as well the late innings cover looks incredible as we work through the heavy workload of the season - although if a team was desperate enough to offer a proven starter for an aging closer with maybe only one more season left we would be foolish to turn it down - more likely trade offer would be for Gonzo or Soriano, but I cant see the Braves letting either one go

Efrim, I don’t disagree. Budgetwise, I don’t see how we could do much better having a position player like Salty next season making the league minimum. Then sign a pitcher in Free Agency.
And we need all the bullpen help we can this season.
But if it took an old reliever to a contender and a young switch hitting catcher to pry a reliable starter near the end of a contract from a losing team (which we may be able to renew with any money leftover after Smoltz and Hudson’s extensions from Andruw’s salary. And using the extra $6.5M from Wick).
I’d definitely consider it. I don’t know who’s available. But I’m thinking a Hudsonesque pitcher with a career ERA <=3.50

Sweet! GO BRAVES
I love coming back to a win. I love coming back to a win and scanning the blog to get some good in-game banter. “It’s like you’re there even when you’re not”
Lerew just pitched himself into the 5th spot. Hell, with that start, he just earned the 3rd spot. 3 hits tonight. 3 stinking hits by the pitchers. This is good stuff. This is what we need. Our offense is going into a slump, and the pitchers are showing up to pitch. This didn’t happen last season.
N8: While your rotation name is accurate and descriptive, it fails the test. It has no flare or rhyme. I know you got a poet in you. Inspired by Savannah Guy and the man in black. (sorry, its what I got left in me at 11:00 PM).
**Glavine left home when I was three And he didn’t leave much to Cox and me Just this old Smoltz and a bullpen coach named Bobby Dews. Now, I don’t blame him cause he run and hid But the meanest thing that he ever did Was before he left, he went and named me Lerew.
Well, he must o’ thought that is quite a joke And it got a lot of laughs from a’ lots of folk, It seems I had to fight my whole life through. Third base would giggle and I’d get red And some hitter’d laugh and I’d bust one to his head, I tell ya, life ain’t easy for a boy named Lerew
Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean, My sinker dropped hard and my wits got keen, I’d roam from town to town to try my trade. But I made a vow to the moon and stars That I’d make my way to them Flushing Parks And kill that man who gave me that awful name.
Well, it was New York City in the end of May And I just hit town on a hot sunny day., I thought I’d start and pitch a few. At an old shoddy park, on a mound of mud, Glavine’s out there, dealing stud, He’s the dirty, mangy dog that named me Lerew.
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes And he went down, but to my surprise, He come up with a circle change right into my ear. But I busted a chair right across his teeth And we crashed through the wall and into the street Kicking and a’ gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer**
(sorry, I really like that part).
Anywho. Only gave up 2. Great game Lerew!

Good stuff, Grinch. Especially the Bard-themed slogan.
I just went with a simple, Smoltz and Hudson and pray for something in my game story. Hopefully it makes it through the desk.
Wow, did Lerew look like different guy than what I’ve seen in past relief appearances. He really is a different pitcher since working with McDowell on that sinker. Before, he threw harder but straight _ 95 mph, straight as a rope, and it got turned into frozen ropes too often, if he wasn’t walking guys.
That sinker could be his meal ticket in the majors.

It was sarcasm at it’s finest. You see, the Braves ARE 20-12, ironically (or coincidentally - which one DOB?), I’ve more than likely managed to complain about SOMETHING in every game.
That’s twice in the last 3 games that the “journey” from inning 1 through inning 7 hasn’t been so pretty for the Bravos, but the end result has.

A word on behalf of Adam LaRoche: Glavine didn’t fair very well during his first year in NY. It had all the people who thought that Leo was the secret to the Braves’ success wagging their heads. But Tom settled in and has steadily rebuilt his game. LaRoche is young. When given the chance he proved he could hit left handers nicely, keep his head in the game and field. I think he’ll adjust and do well up there.
On Salty: I hate to say it, but I think he’s trade bait for a starting pitcher. Seems like it’s a tough year to trade for a pitcher because they’re dropping like flies and almost everybody needs at least one. So a hot commodity like Salty would be a comforting thing to a team giving up a pitcher.
Bully for Chipper taking on that umpire crew Monday night. I wish he’d take on ESPN next. I watched them recap the Braves win over the Dodgers Sunday night only to make it sound like they were the bad guys and that win shouldn’t really have happened. Then there is their junior high school girl euphoria over the Yankees and Red Sox. It’s even worse when they play each other. And, oh yes, major league baseball was also played at other places in the nation today. gag me.

You’re right drummerdad, ESPN won’t give Atlanta credit for nothin’. They’ll win a game and the only hightlights they show is the other team’s. Just hope we’ll be able to be rubbin’ their noses in it at the end of the year…and speaking of noses, I think it’s great that Chipper recognizes that that a Greg Maddux booger is probably worth more than a Chipper Jones first hit ball…damn I miss him. Never forget a Maddux-pitched game my wife and I attended some years back. Hardly had time to finish a couple of beers and it was over…seemed like it was no more than an hour, if that.

Roper, sorry to have overlooked your post … point well make and well taken.
Perhaps I did mispeak but, my problem with the broadness of such classifications comes not from their size … but rather that they’re used to nominally identify groups that are but subsets of the classification being so used.
My ancestors primarily came from British Isles and Germany … indeed, I’m proud of all of those influences, … just as I am of those that came from Denmark, New Zealand, Italy, Greece, Egypt and the plains of North America. If that makes me an “European-Asian-NorthAmerican-African American”, then so be it … but “American” still suits me just fine!
I fear that lost in all the rhetoric is that I really understood and appreciated Intothemystic’s “pejorative” comment … but think that whether it is or isn’t so considered, really depends on how it’s being used … and who’s a doin’ the usin’.
“Race” is another word in our language that has been horribly abused … and the differences between the races are numerous and much more complex than a simple difference in skin pigment.
Why this is so is for others to ponder but “whether a man is honorable and worth his salt” … that ain’t got nothing to do with race, I can tell you that!

Sorry Dob, 24 is the best show on tv. And Im not really worried about the bats in the last few games because the Padres and Dodgers are probably the best two pitching staffs in the league from top to bottom. Plus the Braves were due to cool off a bit. They have too many good, professional hitters for this drought to continue much longer, just my opinion. Im more concerned about the 3 through 5 spots in the rotation. I was glad to see Davies have a very strong game against the Dodgers and also glad to see Lerew come through but do you think that either one of them can put up games like that on a regular basis? If not, how long do you think it will be before the braves explore the trade market for a a starting pitcher?

Lerew was impressive. Another solid power arm in the rotation would be a welcome site. Maybe another piece of the puzzle was put into place tonight?
I can’t wait for JS to option Redman back to the basement. Think he would clear waivers or would he be picked up by one of the local yard dart clubs? I heard a few are looking for a soft tosser.
Things are looking up. Smoltz & Hudson going in the final two games this series & then a nice 7 games verse the Pirates & Nats. Maybe they can fit a nice 4-5 game win streak in there. Would be nice to get a little separation from the Muts. It would put a lot of pressure on them in the series later this month. I know it’s early but never too early to bury a foot in their pinstriped tails.
The bats will heat up next week for sure. I just hope it is our bats & not the ones of the former Braves.
The Shield was good, next week’s episode should be even better. I like to watch The Riches as well, that show kind of grows on you.

Although Andruw did come through last night I still have the feeling it’s the worst thing that could have happened. Yes he got two hits which is incredible bordering unbelievable if you take into account the way he sets up. With his stance and swing any hit is a little wonder. Bad thing about his luck last night is that he is now probably convinced that he was doing it right and that he does not have to change a thing. We all know what will happen next. He however will still act surprised and blame it on balance and timing.

I think people are downplaying how good Lerew’s start was. I have been reading through the blog and people were saying that he “did ok” and “gave us a chance to win”. The guy pitched 6 innings let up 2 hits, runs, and walks with 7 Ks. With how bad Chuck as been as the 3 combined with how absolutely atrocious Davies and Redman have been, I would say we should be doing cartwheels! It is only one start, but shoot; it was certainly a good one. Maybe Cormier can come back and pitch somewhere near like he did in spring training. I don’t see how Lerew doesn’t get another shot Sunday!

Frits - Hopefully this will snap Andruw out of the slump for a couple of weeks. The 2nd hit when he drove the ball to right center was encouraging. It showed at least he is trying to get away from pulling the ball so much.
I am sure watching him through the years, you know he is mostly a streak hitter. Once again maybe this will get him going. We needed a game like that from AJ.

Its nice to see that even though Andruw got the game winning RBI last night by going to right field that he still sounds reluctant to do it in his post game interview. “I”m a pull hitter, not a right field hitter. Thats the way it is.” Don’t get your hopes up folks, sounds like we’ll be back at ground zero very soon.

Lee, his comments after the game proof that he will not be trying that. He just stated he is a pull hitter and that’s it. In his mind the hit to right was a mistake. Like I said before, every hit at this moment is a little wonder and is bordering some physical impossibility. Yes he is streaky but above all he is hardheaded. Unless someone gets thru to him I am afraid this streak will never end

Willy Wally,
According to espn.com, Chipper and AJ have 38 AB’s with RISP. Unfortunately they don’t list PA’s but judging by walks, it looks like AJ does have a few more PA’s.
Also, it looks like AJ’s AVG and SLG with RISP went up a lot in just one game. According to them, he’s at .237 AVG/ .446 OBP/ .526 SLG. That’s if you trust STATS LLC and espn.com.
(But we probably shouldn’t pay attention to ESPN, with their biases against points of views of Braves fans.)

You know, the whole Rainbow/PUSH deal is silly. MLB does a lot of work in inner-city, low-income, and minority communities in terms of community development and mentoring programs. The fact is that young blacks tend to gravitate towards basketball in the bigger cities and towards football in more rural areas. Baseball is clearly the national sport in the Caribbean, Japan, and Venezuela, so that’s where you go for talent. You don’t go down to Cairo, GA trying to find another Willie Harris simply so your team demographics look better.
Rainbow/PUSH says Schuerholz is just about the bottom line. Damn right he is. He works for Time Warner/Liberty Media and they are looking at the bottomg line and the success of the team on the field.
What’s really crazy about this is that Rainbow/PUSH shouldn’t care about how many black players the Braves have. They should care about why a significantly greater number of black children believe that sports is the only way to get out of poverty…why succeeding in school is ridiculed. They need to be focused on actual community development, not media grandstanding like this.

I’m not sure if I’m ready to waive him this early in May. Injuries are always the biggest unknown, and I’d hate losing 2 arms (1 to waivers, and 1 to injury).
That said, if someone DOES claim him off waivers, then I assume they prorate the rest of his contract? I know he’s a BARGAIN, but we could use every dime available on better production.

Here’s what those top 50 rankings from Baseball Prospectus say about Andruw Jones:
No. 44. Andruw Jones, CF, Braves, Age 30
He’s at the age where he’s going to need to start making adjustments — and so far, so good. Andruw no longer has the wheels that he once did in center field, but he makes up for it by getting tremendous reads as the ball leaves the bat. His bulk prevents him from legging out as many base hits, but he makes up for it by swinging for the fences more often. He may have lost a tick of bat speed, but he makes up for it by working the count more carefully; he has seen 4.13 pitches per plate appearance thus far this season, far above his 3.73 P/PA career norm. It’s exactly these sorts of adjustments that should lock him in as a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
The discussion about Jones the past couple of days just goes to show that he’s been under appreciated by a lot of Atlanta fans because he’s not a perfect player but merely a Hall of Famer.

Fritz 8:13 … not much more to say than nice post!
Andruw hasn’t been in a slump … it’s his approach to hitting … it’s pathetic. It’s true that he can make adjustments and improve his timing and have some measure of success … and, in so doing, convince himself that he’s found the magic … how sad.
Not nearly as sad as folks buying into such delusional nonsense. A crusty old man told me a long time ago that “doing things right, no matter how hard you work at it … isn’t going to get the job done if you’re doing the wrong things. In fact, the harder you work at it, the worse it will get!” … methinks Andruw is a classic example … he works hard.
Andruw’s interview “He just left a ball up. I was looking for a slider and hit it that way. I’m not a right-field hitter. I’m a pull hitter. That’s what it is”
That from someone who had gone 0:21 after getting off to a slow start?!
I just wish is was a hitter, rightfield, pull or otherwise … well, he was once … what happened?
I’ve changed my mind … while I’d still have him ninth in the order, I’d insist that he widen his stance, pull every pitch … more than he is currently doing … and swing harder!
If there is to be any hope for Andruw’s awakening it will most likely result from his hearing jeers not cheers! Like he said “That’s what it is”
But it won’t happen … not from fans who cheer with each fly ball! Fly balls are outs waiting to happen and, if you make solid contact but hit the directly at somebody … you’ve been bested! That ain’t the object of the game.
Well, like I said … not much to say … Fritz said it all!
Tonight should be a fun game to watch!

Too many posts to read through to see if someone responded to him, by Matthew at the SLC, the Sports Illustrated article ranking McCann second in value was an article about his FANTASY value. Meaning, as a catcher, with his consistency, his value as a fantasy baseball player is higher than, say, Andruw who is more one dimensional (power) at a position with deeper players. I love McCann as much as the next guy, but there’s no way in h*ll that he’s better than A-Rod.

Trade Andruw for an Ace DOB, one night and two hits don’t support the headline of Andruw breaking out of his slump. With AJ’s flailing swings and contorted stance, his “breakout” is not sustainable.
Additionally, he only plays for his own “numbers” and is not a team player. Nor does he seem to take instructions or suggestions from Pendelton. To quote Andruw in your article: I’m not a right-field-ball hitter,” Jones said. “I’m a pull hitter. That’s the way it is.” And then later in the interview, he said, “A slump’s a slump. It’s a long season. I think I had an 0-for-40 once. I’m not worried. At the end of the year, I’m going be where I want to be.”
Does that sound like a team guy? At the end of the year, if he continues to play with the selfish and lax attitude about each game, he’ll be right where he wants to be…in THIRD PLACE IN THE DIVISION with other teams negotiating for his “stats” for ‘08.
Wonder if AJ would agree to being traded? After all, it’s “just busness”, right? I wish he would put himself up for that option.
I know, trade rules, clauses and contracts notwithstanding, if both the Braves and Andruw agree then it would be a great deal. Let’s go get Glavine, Maddux or another seasoned starter for AJ. Think it’s crazy? Maybe, but in my humble opinion, as soon as AJ spends another few (very few) years chasing balls in center, he’s going to dramatically drop in proficiency due to injury or weight-caused problems. He’s worth more at this point in time than he ever will be again. So, here’s wishing JS and AJ would let the talks begin and let’s get another ace in the mix. We could go all the way with that.
There are several options for a center field replacement that would perhaps not be as spectacular in the field but they would be good…and thier bat would be more consistent and no doubt more team oriented when it comes to moving runners along. Our other Jones can handle cleanup just fine.
Now, before you call me an Andruw hater…I’m not. He seems like a good, albeit slow on the uptake, kinda guy. He just won’t change. Slumps are slumps, but AJ has not been in a slump, he’s simply displaying a behavior…year after year. He’s only doing what he has always done…
Moral to the story: If you can’t change the player, change the player.

Savannah Guy -
Good post about Andruw I agree completely. Looks like his contract year is coming at about the right time. Braves’ offer to resign him will more than likely be an insult according to Boras and Andruw will move on. I am sure Andruw realizes this now and his attitude is growing like his new bank account will be. Teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and possibly even the Mets will be in the running to overpay for his services. He has been a great player for the Braves but it is time for a new generation of stars for the team….McCann, Frenchy and the list will continue. Lets just hope he helps lift the Braves to a championship this year.

Andruw is “on pace” for about 25 HR and 111 RBI.
Not a bad season, per say. But for a guy coming off of back to back seasons of 41 & 51 HR along with 128 & 129 RBI, not to mention quite possibly commanding around 16-20 million per season after this one, I don’t think he’s worth the money that SOMEBODY is going to spend on him.
Is he a HOF’r? More than likely. Do I appreciate that? Absolutely. Has he been a big part of our success the last decade? Without a doubt. Should we spend that kind of money on him this offseason? Not on YOUR life.
Him going in the HOF someday, doesn’t do us one damn bit of good 3 years into the next contract if he goes downhill fast. What’s JS gonna do, put out a marketing blitz saying:
“Come one, come all to the TED this weekend and every weekend to see the ineffective (but FUTURE HOF’r) Andruw Jones. Stick around after the game, where the Friday night fireworks display will be replaced with highlights of Andruw when he was good.”
My “anger” (for lack of a better word), is not directed at Andruw’s production. He is what he is. Which is a hitter that HACKS non-stop and will occasionally go through stretches where he’s patient enough to be productive with that approach. But my frustration is that Bobby refuses to drop a guy who is slumping miserably and looks silly lost at the plate, down in the order. Then to top that off, he’s gonna try and get a king’s ransom in the off season.
Plain and simple. If THIS is the kind of production we can expect from him over the next 4-5 years (25-30 HR, 100-115 RBI and a .240-.260 BA), then we can spend our money elsewhere, IMO.
We may not replace his glove in CF, but with that money we can replace him with 1, 2 or maybe even 3 other players that can help us WIN GAMES.
Now THAT would be money well spent.

AL,
That SI article is not about fantasy rankings.
It mentions the words “fantasy” but it’s an article about the most valuable players taking into account their overall skills.
Basically it’s the 50 pro players they would draft if they were starting a team from scratch in the major leagues (with major league contract and service time rules) with money not being an object.
Service time matters so four or five years down the road matters, which explains McCann and ARod’s rankings.
Here’s how they explain it:
Would I take the rest of A-Rod’s 2007 or the rest of Grady Sizemore’s 2007? Probably A-Rod, but it’s close. Would I take A-Rod’s age-34 season in 2010, or Sizemore’s age-27 season in 2010? The answer is Sizemore, and I don’t think it’s remotely close. A-Rod might be the best player in baseball right now, but if we’re looking at a six-year time horizon there are at least a half-dozen guys ahead of him.
And here’s what they say about McCann:
No. 9. Brian McCann, C, Braves, Age 23
This is one special kid. PECOTA thinks that McCann is going to be a consistent .300 BA, 25 HR guy year after year. Since 1950 there are just eight catchers who have had more than one season in which they posted a .300-plus batting average and 25-plus home runs. Seven of those guys — Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Gary Carter, Carlton Fisk, Ivan Rodriguez and Mike Piazza — are inner-circle Hall of Famers. The other is Joe Torre, who should get his plaque in Cooperstown soon enough. As an added plus, McCann is a quiet, humble kid on a team full of big egos; even his recent finger injury came when he was trying to lay down a bunt.

Is Loogie a brand name? Is that why it’s capitalized?
Also, if you pick your nose, that’s a booger, even if it’s got a glob of clear, wet mucous attached to it. A loogie is the substance that is sucked out of the nasal cavity, mixed with saliva and sometimes phlegm from the lungs and spit out of the mouth.

I wasn’t directing that at you (god knows I’ve done enough of that), I know you were just relaying information from the si.com article.
No offense, meant. I just used your name, so people knew “what” I was responding to.
Like I’ve said in the past. I don’t hate Andruw, in fact I rather enjoy watching him play defense. If Ted still owned the team (or somebody willing to go all “Steinbrenner” with the payroll), I’d say keep him and let him finish his career here.
But that isn’t gonna happen by the time this season ends and he needs a knew contract. As long as our payroll stays in the 80-100 million dollar range, we absolutely cannont (and should not) afford him.
It sucks, for those of us who like watching guys play their entire HOF career in one city (not just Braves players - but ALL players in general).
But that’s baseball in the new millenium, I guess.

Nathan-I don’t really disagree with you about not re-signing Andruw, but I’m going to caution you, like I did with KC. Don’t count on having all sorts of money left over from Andruw’s salary. Next season, Hudon’s salary goes up $7million, that only leaves $6.5 mil from Andruw’s current salary. When youffigure in arbitration for Gonzalez and Soriano, raises for Smoltz, McCann and Francoeur-well, there just isn’t going to be a whole lot left. Up to this point, the deal with Liberty Media is not carved in stone. It still may not happen, so you can’t count on any kind of boost in the salary structure. I agree we can’t really afford to resign him, but I wouldn’t go counting on getting all sorts of other players with our savings. Filling in positions on the 08 ballclub may very well consist of calling up some minor league talent.

N8,
I actually agree. I think letting Andruw walk is a wise move.
And I actually think Andruw will still be a very productive player for at least a few more seasons but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be worth his asking price. I think that’s all Nate Silver (the guy that wrote the article) was saying. He probably agrees that AJ isn’t going to be worth the money he will ask for.

N8,
Also, something else to consider: What a player is worth may be different to different teams. Andruw is likely to be very productive to somewhat productive over the next five or six years. If Johnny Damon declines at the rate I expect him too, and I’m running the Yankees, I consider signing Andruw Jones because I have the resources to do it.
In other words, the Yankees signing AJ wouldn’t be as dumb as the Braves signing AJ. Actually I think the Yankees signing AJ after the season would be a wiser move than them signing Damon to a long-term deal last season.

Some statistical musings (no I’m not going to Shaun all over you, but if I do, I’ll clean up before I leave).
Our #1 and #2 hitters (KJ and Renteria) are doing well in several areas. Let me demonstrate:
Kelly Johnson- 33 hits, .292 AVG, .433 OBP (#6 in the NL), number of pitches seen-603 (6th in the NL); BB-28 (#6 in the NL)
Edgar Renteria- .338 AVG (#9 in the NL), .399 OBP (#15 in the NL), number of pitches seen-556 (#21 in the NL); BB-13
The point that I find interesting thus far is that our 1 and 2 hitters are seeing an average of 5 pitches per at bat (assuming they get 4 AB per game each). They are at least giving the 3-9 hitters a chance to see what the opposing pitcher has. This is especially helpful when seeing a pitcher for the first time, or when facing one with a weird delivery (a la El Duque or Feliciano). Incidentally, Andruw is #9 on that list in the NL with 581.
Also interesting to me is that there are three Braves in the NL Top Ten in walks: Kelly Johnson (#6, 28 BB), Andruw Jones (#7, 24 BB), and Chipper Jones (#8, 23 BB). Franceour, for those who are interested, has 11 (he only had 23 all of last year!).
So, here is stuff for you to read as you try to go to sleep, but I worked hard to find it, so be nice.
Go Braves!

My computer “wigged” out on me in the middle of another epic post. Not sure if it posted, or backed out of the screen on me. So if this is a double post. I appologize.
Good points on the payroll with Andruw leaving. But I wasn’t limiting the “extra money”, to just aquiring NEW players, but paying the ones that are arbitration elligble. Since this last offseason, we got rid of LaRoche and Giles. Of course we had KJ in the wings, and for LaRoche we got Gonzalez and Lillebridge.
Some possible moves to maneuver the payroll to add more pitching or bench depth, could be trading Renteria and Wickman. We allegedly have a glut of SS prospects on the way, and if Gonzo and Soriano keep up what they’re doing, along with another pitcher taking over that 2nd setup roll, we really wouldn’t need Wickman after this year, would we? Not to mention after next year, Hampton will be gone.
Many moves could (and will) be made, turning a good portion of the roster over again. I’m sure of that. More than likely NOT re-signing Andruw will be the big one.
Shaun
VERY GOOD points about the relative “value” of signing Andruw. You are absolutely correct. The “big 5” (Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers, and less likely - but possibly - the Cubs), could easily budget in money for Andruw, if they desired. Look at those “Sally Arms” the Dodgers displayed in the OF last weekend, they most definitely could “use” Andruw.
Again, if I did hit “post” before and this is a repeat, I appologize.

Jason-I’m not sure what effect contract averaging would have in this instance. Andruw is making $13.5 million this year. I haven’t seen a single account that states the situation differently. Even if Hudson’s salary (which is what I imagine your point is) would make that big a difference. Even if it ends up leaving us $1 or 2 million, it won’t get us a centerfield replacement or a top line starter for the rotation, as some have speculated. McCann’s salary next year, while still a great deal, results in a raise. You know they will try to extend Francoeur, which will add more. The way Gonzon and Soriano are pitching, their arbitration awards could almost double their salary-keep in mind that with pitching going for a premium and arbitration figures skyrocketing, it is more than a vague possibliity that they will make considerably more $$$. I’m not advocating doom and gloom here, though.I think we have plenty of pieces in the minors that can make significant contribultions. The pitching down on the farm is looking good and we do have a couple of outfielders we could use, like Brandon Jones-even Billy McCarthy or Blanco. I’m not pessimistic, but we may not have as much $$ as some think we do.

Fritz (and Bob, journalist),
I have to disagree with you that Andruw’s hits last night (and attitude) are the worst thing that could happen.
Nobody’s happy with his numbers. Nobody but Andruw is happy with his stance. Everybody but Andruw is happy he went to right field.
That said. Runs are runs. Production is production. I don’t care if Andruw straps on the leotard or not. I will never say that a game winning hit is a bad thing.
I think it’s hypocritical to say, “well, he’ll hit his 30 HR and get his 100RBI” all preseason then to counter “he’s convinced he’s doing the right thing” with the implication that he’s not.
I don’t see any reason he won’t still produce his 30/100 with similar numbers in his career AVG and OPS.
GM Meansonny would still consider moving him down the order because better options appear to be available. But I definitely recognize that a come from behind win is not the worst thing that could happen.

I’ve been meaning to comment for awhile to those of you in favor of trading Andruw this year. What do you think we could get for him - don’t get your hopes up. Rental players (pending free agents) don’t bring studs in return - usually just prospects. Also, as a 5-10 player he can refuse any trade (especially to colder climates). I haven’t seen any sign and trade deals in MLB in a long time, so I don’t think that is an option. Unless we are 20 games out of playoff contention come July - we have to keep Andruw the rest of the year. A blog the day mentioned the recasting of Dale Murphy as catcher of the future to center fielder extrordanair. I think we need to convert Salty the same way. He is a better catcher than McCann - but also more athletic. Probably first base is the final solution. My next rambling is fixing the left field problem - Willie Harris is not the long term answer. I think we need to start Diaz every day or 1) Put Salty at first and Thorman in left 2) Teach Escobar to play second and put Kelly in right (Escobar is ripping it up at Richmond) Next to Last rambling - Joey Devine seems to be finally producing at Miss - I think Wickman and his $6.5M are gone next year. Final rambling - Who is this kid Winklesas at Richmond? In 11 appearances over 25 innings between Miss and Richmond - he hasn’t given up an earned run yet

Chipper definitely made a monitary mistake wiping that “little green man” (obligitory Steve Vai reference), from the ball.
My guess is that a baseball that was the ball used for a HOFr’s first basehit, with another HOFr’s DNA on it would fetch a fortune on Ebay.
After all, Ty Cobb’s wooden dentures netted a small fortune a few years back.
That ball wouldv’e definitely been any serious collector’s shrine. A fine mantle piece for any Braves fan, indeed.

Just to share, we always referred to loogies the same way as DOB stated and I share Chipper’s NFL (North Florida) upbringing. Of course, I’m from the Panhandle and he’s from Jack-SUN-ville.
I’m wondering if Chuck James is suffering from a bit of the dreaded “sophmore slump” that KC predicted for the Marlins pitchers this spring. I think the league has adjusted to him and he has to reply in kind. A third pitch wouldn’t hurt either (ala Glavine).
I’m hoping that Andruw is sandbaggin’ and looking to fool the opposition with his “pull only” comments. Hint, I don’t really believe that, even though I wrote it.
Such a pleasure to have watched Maddux all those years. And, as someone mentioned, he saved our pocket books and livers by turning the game over so quickly. And his fielding! He’s a classic case of the “not so athletic looking guy” being very athletic and using it to his advantage.

Mike, don’t be “sorry” about saying 24 is best show (just got up to your post, is why I’m commenting now).
It’s not — not even close. But don’t be sorry for saying it is.
Could have at least made the argument in past seasons, but this season is merely good, not great. And it absolutely pales in comparison to The Shield, in every way _ writing, acting, drama, realness, tension, etc. Just blows away 24.
Someone asked about Redman as a lefty specialist. Perhaps against certain lefties. Even thought he’s a junkballer, not your typical lefty specialist by any means, at least you could avoid him getting torched by right-handers, the way he has been as a starter.
That is, if you really insist on keeping him.

Lew,
Very good points. I was just wondering if Hudson’s salary is spread out over the lifetime of the contract like Hampton’s, that his salary wouldn’t be going up $7mill for accounting purposes. It may not take as big of a chunk of the $13.5 that would be “left over” if we didn’t sign Andruw. If they spread it out, it wouldn’t be a jump at all on the books…

Yes. Almost all of those teams you mentioned signed outfielders to less-than-wise contract over the past couple of years (Johnny Damon, Coco Crisp, Juan Pierre, Alfonso Soriano). And for those teams, signing Andruw to a 4, 5 or 6-year deal would be smarter than some of their signings.

Gotta agree with the majority here. The Shield, The Wire, Sopranos far and away the best shows on television.
24 is a notch below but only because it is on network television. If it was on cable, it would probably be as good as those other shows. BUT 24 is far and away the best show on network television.
I loved the first season of Prison Break. The second season was absolutely horrible. I was so disappointed, I don’t think I will be coming back for the third season. That cliffhanger they had at the end of the last episode of season 2 looked like a gruesome place down there in Panama but it looks like it is going to turn into some weird sci-fi crap or something, so I am going to avoid it next year.

MD Fan,
Finding another position for Salty makes sense, at least there is a strong case for your argument. But when you start moving half the other players around to new positions, your argument loses credence. In particular, why would you even consider moving KJ to right field with his surgically repaired elbow when we have a pretty good youg rightfielder out there now with a gun for an arm?
To improve the team we will probably have to trade either Salty or Thorman and we probably need more time to decide which (if not both) to move.
Your position changes remind me of a couple of players in the ’60s who played all 9 positions in a late season game. Perhaps we can have a variation where all the players except the pitcher and catcher rotate positions every inning (like in volleyball). Then it won’t matter where Salty, Escobar, Thorman, and KJ start out.

the whole rainbowPUSH thing is really irritating to me. it sux that we have to consider race at all when making personel decisions. to me, this does nothing but reinforce ideas of racism. we cannot be equal until we begin to see each other as JUST PEOPLE. not black people or white people. sports teams nowadays just want the best players. nobody cares what color they are.
but jessie jackson doesnt really want racial equality. and he doesnt want racism to end. if that happens he is out of a job! hes nothing but a trouble maker, and i cant stand him.
if i was willie harris, i would be p** at jessie jackson and this whole rainbowPUSH thing. the only thing it is doing for him is making people think that he got called up because hes black, not because hes the best player or the best option. rainbowPUSH is just making willie harris look bad.

Rickey wants a comeback
Roger Clemens’ big announcement this week has Rickey Henderson hoping some club might give him one more chance to make a major league comeback. Otherwise, he will call it a career - for good this time. ”Seeing Roger come back, all the seed that it plants is ask me to come back one time,” Henderson said Tuesday. ”I’m going to look at it at the end of the year. I might come out with some crazy stuff, a press conference telling every club, ‘Put me on the field with your best player and see if I come out of it.’ If I can’t do it, I’ll call it quits at the end,” he said.

I like Snell, high strikeout rate and all. But I would under no circumstances trade Salty for him. Salty needs to be used in a deal for a guy like Matt Cain or Jered Weaver. They are more established. Plus the Pirates have a guy named Neil Walker in their system who people rave about. He is the #2 rated catcher in the minors. But Snell is great.

Reading the Charleston paper for who knows what reason - RSS news feeds are unbelievable for tracking news stories about your team. But the last line in this blurb from the paper is great:
There is one quest for baseball immortality this season that won’t end in an asterisk. Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox has moved within three ejections of John McGraw’s baseball record of 131. ”I think all of the umpires should get together and give him something,” John Smoltz told the Atlanta Constitution Journal. Cox, meanwhile, said he is ”a little embarrassed” by the dubious honor, though he admits that being tossed is likely ” just about every time” he leaves the dugout. No word whether former Brave Hank Aaron will be in attendance when Cox goes for the record.

Payne: You know the past few days all people were talking about was, AJ isn’t spectacular in the clutch. His career numbers show this. He doesn’t perform to career levels in his splits like you had claimed all players do when given a large enough sample size. There were also the complaints that AJ is not doing well in the clutch so far this year.
Now, he had a good game last night and all of the sudden his average went from .188 to .223 and you’re going on like he just set an all time record.
Last nights game and performance from AJ was very welcome. Even his most ardent detractors will rejoice in success like last night.
The knock on AJ is his inconsistancy. Everyone has noted this.
Personally, I love the guy. I don’t think he should be dropped in the order just yet. I know in the end we’re going to get out of AJ what we always get, about 35 HR, 100 RBI and a .260 AVG. He’s going to get on a role here soon and carry the team through the slump they are experiencing offensively.
As for re-signing him, I hope it works out. I’d like to see him here the rest of his career. It’s up to AJ though. It’s all on him.

Anyone else hope that Roger Clemens gets pounded and becomes a disruptive influence in that clubhouse with a bunch of other stars envious at his “perks”. At some point, many an older pitcher doesn’t just fade away, but abruptly declines because the flexibility, the stamina, and the ability of the body to recover are not what they used to be. In any event, I am sure that ESPN is primed to take us on another tour of the minors with Roger Clemens making his rehab starts and cut in on their regular games with Clemens (and Bonds) moments. Something to think about: Maddux could very well finish his career with over 400 wins, which would be unheard of for a pitcher post-1930! He’s only 65 wins away and I can see Maddux, 41, pitching into his late 40’s.
Clemens has a shot, too, but he’s already 44 and is much bigger and more of a power-pitcher, though he has adjusted his style late in his career.
The only two pitchers with 400 wins:
Cy Young, retired in 1911.
Walter Johnson, retired in 1927
These two pitchers died well before Maddux and Clemens were born!
I know I’m stating the obvious but stuff like this gives us some perspective of what freaks these guys are (freaks in a good way).

It’s crazy that Clemens and Maddux have that many wins. I remember 10 or so years ago when all the expert sportswriters kept insisting that it would be extremely rare for a pitcher to get to 300 wins again - and now we have two guys who just might get to 400 wins. I think that rationale the writers used to have was that reduced innings lead to reduced wins and that the amount of money being made would spoil the guys too much that they would have no incentive to keep pitching. As it is turning out it seems that the reduced innnings MAY have kept great pitchers like Clemens and Maddux fresher and more injury free during their careers as opposed to guys from 50 years ago and the money MAY given the great pitchers a great incentive to keep coming back and collecting every last cent they can get their hands on.

LOL, Willy.
I have to say that I indulge. I’ve got quite a few youngins. And they really enjoy Idol and Dancing with the Stars.
That’s why I love blogging from my blackberry, espn gamecast, or The Bull (FM Radio) so much. It keeps me on gametime updates while indulging my kids. Gotta keep my youngins dancing ;-)

TennesseePaul,
I think what people don’t seem to realize (not saying you but some people here) is Andruw has never been a particularly high AVG hitter. His AVG is not going to be good in clutch situations because he’s not a high AVG hitter. And it’s going to fluctuate more because a couple of hits make more of a difference in just a few AB’s. Also he’s always been a high K guy who walks a decent number of times so in clutch situations he’s going to have a lot of K’s and a respectable number of BB’s. Hits in the clutch are going to be few and far between for AJ because the type of hitter he is.

I agree it’s pretty ridiculous they don’t have Maddux vs. Smoltz on ESPN tonight. But, in defense of ESPN I do believe they schedule these games before the season even starts - don’t think they knew when they scheduled the game today that Mad-dog and Smoltzie would be going head to head…

Salty needs to be used in a deal for a guy like Matt Cain or Jered Weaver. They are more established.
I think some folks really don’t understand 1. just how little prospects are worth compared to established players and 2. how valuable young starting pitching is.
First of all, there will be absolutely no 1 for 1 deal involving Salty and probably any established major league player, definitely not a pitcher.
Salty is a great great prospect, his stint so far has only bettered that, specifically with his defensive catching success. But he is still just a prospect. A guy that has played 3 major league games.
The only position in which prospects are worth more than a catcher who can hit is pitchers, specifically a starting pitcher.
But here’s the thing about prospects. No prospect is a sure thing, especially catcher prospects who are notoriously prone to hitting a wall.
Salty will probably be a good every day major league player, he may be an All-Star, maybe even a superstar, but he still may also not be any better than a backup in the majors, he may not ever catch on at all and eventually wash out.
With Snell he has already proven he can be a major league pitcher, maybe not great, though maybe really really good. He probably won’t wash out, and he may still be great.
You don’t someone who is some measure of a sure thing for a maybe or even a probably. That’s just now how it works, especially when you are talking about a pitcher.
If Pittsburgh was offering Snell for Salty we’d take it seven days a week and twice on Sunday.
As for Cain or Weaver we couldn’t get them for ALL of our prospects. Those guys are young, not eligible for free agency for a few years, and have already shown Cy Young type ability in major league games. They aren’t going ANYWHERE.
Think about it, the last time I’ve heard of a trade of anyone like that was Kazmir and he hadn’t even pitched in the majors yet.

DonC,
That’s true, but ESPN has the ability to change the game they are scheduled to televise. They do it all the time. I remember Bobby complaining a couple of times last year when the game time had to be changed to 7:05 to accommodate ESPN.

Jason

Shaun, what are the league wide OPS+ numbers in clutch situations like late and close, RISP, runners on, and so forth. Intuition tells me that hitters should perform much better in those situations because more pressure is on the pitcher and usually because if that situation is occurring (RISP) usually the pitcher is on the ropes or not performing well. SO, if you could point me in the right direction where I could find league wide averages and determine from that if Andruw is doing well as opposed to the league average, it would be appreciated. Instead of average, I would be more interested in his OPS+ fluctuations in such situations if such is available.

Willy Wally,
Good point.
But also, it is only two guys who could reach 400 wins…two guys in the last, what, 70 years? And those two guys have been extremely fortunate or have put themselves in a position to play for contenders basically their whole careers; that helps their cause a lot.
Not to take anything at all away from what they’re doing because they’re obviously first-ballot, elite HOFers.
It’s a good point that reduced innings and reduced games may be keeping pitchers healthy. I’m sure there’s some research somewhere on the subject.
Also, I’m sure you’d expect a couple of pitchers every couple of generations or so to stay stay healthy enough, play for enough good teams and have the skills to win that many games. After all, in the history of baseball, even in high-game, high-inning eras, there have only been two 400-game winners so far.

Yeah, Matt Cain is for sure untouchable… Jared Weaver probably is (although I’ve heard reports that the Angels do have injury concerns with him). But no, I know Salty won’t bring in a young stud like that. But Ian Snell is in his 3rd or 4th year in the league already. He’ll be a FA in 2 years and there is no way Pittsburgh will be able to keep him… Snell is not in the same league as Weaver or Cain…

I just read that deal about Rainbow/PUSH. It has been addressed enough on here, and probably doesn’t deserve to be talked about here or anywhere because it’s pretty ignorant.
What are the Braves racist for only having black people from the islands? That sure makes sense. Do they want some kind of quota? Nonsense.
There are so many things about this that bother me, but I guess it’s just one of those things you have to learn to ignore.

Afternoon folks…
Guys, can’t get that bent out of shape about the boys in Bristol. After all, it’s the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network for a reason, right?
Had to chuckle at the Hawk’s #1 fan post. Nothing like throwing out an example of a bad approach to sports team management while you’re spamming the blog.
Looks to be a gem tonight at the Ted. I would agree with the sentiment that AJ’s flirtation with right field last night is a once in a two-hundred plate appearance happening. AJ’s plate approach is what it is.

AJ,
I agree. No one for one Salty for any pitcher taht has been productive at the major league level. But if you package Salty, Harrison and Escober for Jered Weaver. The Angels are going to do it. I’m just using Weaver as an example, but those are three very good prospects for one pitcher that has not even a years service time.

It would be good if it were on ESPN tonight, like it happens that they got the first Dice-K game, the first Dice-K in Fenway game and the first Dice-K vs. Yankees game. Hey you think they’ll happen to have the game when Clemens gets back? LOL Maybe the first Clemens vs. Red Sox?
They should have known this might happen and do what they do to get the good Red Sox-Yankees games, if you show every game on ESPN of course you get the good matchups.

Your the first person to comment on my name, hell, Dave didn’t say anything he just refers to me a BGE. Its just for fun. I don’t really eat baby goats (i let em grow up first!)
As for the Braves. I hate ESPN and what it stands for (NY,Boston and nothing else) but unfortunately you kinda have to watch the network. I wish they would make another ESPN (I know there’s too many as it is) called ESPN-EE (ESPN-Everyone Else) then you could just not report on NY, LA, Boston, Chicago. That’d be excellent.
I know he doesn’t pitch for the Braves anymore but, he was my hero growing up so…..I might just catch myself rooting for Greg tonight (just as long as we win).

How backwards is it that someone like me who will seek out games and gladly pay extra to view them CANT ACCESS THE FREAKIN’ GAMES?! It’s not Dish Network’s fault, either! It’s MLB’s fault! Willy Wally,
You can go to espn.com’s stat page and see league averages in different situations. We probably would want to look at more than one season, especially since this season is only a month in a half old, but here are the numbers for 2007:
RISP: .256 AVG/.349 OBP/.398 SLG
Close and Late: .253/.335/.391
Runners on: .260/.342/.404
Nobody On: .255/.321/.402
Overall: .257/.330/.402
Not too much fluctuation this season.

How far in advance does ESPN schedule their games? I’m guessing there is no way they could have predicted pitching match ups in advance in many cases. And seems like it takes a lot of haul equipment around the country to broadcast a major league game.

I seriously don’t see ANYONE getting 400 wins.
Clemens is only pitching 100 innings a season. He’d probably need 5 more seasons to get the next 50+ wins.
And Maddux is going to need 5 more seasons if he can remain healthy and effective (15 wins per season).
With all the money these guys make, that 400 number would be the only reason they keep coming out. I don’t think that will be enough for them.

Efrim,
I’m no GM, but I still don’t think that that would happen.
Just for practical purposes the Angels are really deep at catcher (though Mathis, Budde, Conger and Napoli probably aren’t as good as Salty). Plus they are super deep up the middle.
But in a completely hypothetical situation I still doubt that that kind of deal would happen, just because of what Weaver has shown, plus the dude has 4 years after this one before he’s a free agent. I’m pretty sure he can’t even get arbitration until after ‘09 or maybe ‘10.
Maybe maybe if it was for three potential superstars, but I don’t think anyone is rating Escobar or Harrison as much more than potentially good everyday guys.
Regardless, you just don’t ever see trades like that, mostly because you don’t ever see teams trading young guys like Weaver, Cain or anyone, even for established superstars.
Maybe you have a better memory than me, you are probably older, so maybe it happened before my time, but I cannot recall any trade where someone who had that kind of stuff, that kind of potential, who are so far from free agency, and who had already performed in the majors like Cain or Weaver has been traded unless their was something wrong with them.
And my belief is that it’s because the price for guys like that is so high that they are, for all practical purposes, untouchable.

AJ,
I agree, you don’t see trades like that very often. I just wouldn’t package our best prospects for anyone who wasn’t an established pitcvher on the sunny side of 30.
It really brings the question of why we haven’t been doing well with pitchers in the minors recently. Name me a couple of power arms the Braves have in their system. I will say Hanson has promising stats, but other than last years draft the Braves haven’t done well. Why we drafted Cody Johnson is beyond me. Lets grab a pitcher in this draft.
How about rhp Michael Main from Deland High School? Daniel Moskos from Clemson? Ross Deitwiler from Missouri State?
Arms!!! We need them in this system!!!! Right handed preferrably.

We are unlikely to get a young major league pitcher like Cain, Weaver (the Younger), Hamels, etc. for Salty or Salty + one more prospect, and such a trade would be very risky. Getting only one pitcher in return raises the possibility that that one pitcher could break down and get injured or lose something off his fastball, etc.
If we were to talk in terms of people within our own system, we would need to get Lerew, Harrison or Jo Jo Reyes, and Hanson or Lyman or Jones for Salty and say D. Hernandez (the 2B at Miss.) Salty, at his stage of development and at his position, is much more projectable than any of the pitchers, but with 3 quality arms coming back, you reduce the liability that you have with trading a position player for a pitcher.

Efrim,
Honestly, I don’t know all that much about Snell. He has been awesome this year and it seems like I’ve heard that he’s the real deal.
If that is the case I would probably trade Salty for him. It would suck to lose Salty because I think he could be great, he’s a very exciting prospect, particularly since we’ve seen how he’s done defensively behind the plate so far. However, I want McCann behind the plate for this team for a long long time, and Salty is most valuable behind the plate.
If his bat stays awesome then it may be worthwhile to move him into the field, but until then, his greatest value is as a catcher. And if he’s a catcher, we’re going to trade him.
Baseball America was already projecting Snell as the Pirates No. 2 starter in 2010, and that was before his season this year. Honestly, I’d take a possible No. 2 starter who’s already proven himself a little in the majors today, in return for almost any prospect like Salty who is in a position that is already filled.
If we really needed a catcher I wouldn’t trade Salty for almost anything, but it sounds like Snell would be worth it.

meansonny,
I agree. It is an outside shot for either pitcher to win 400.
I think Maddux has a better shot to remain effective enough for more than 5 more seasons.
I can see Maddux averaging 10 more wins for six more years. It’s kind of a long shot at his age but he’s certainly the type of pitcher who could do it.

Shaun,
Phil Niekro was 48 when he retired. Maddux will have to work on a knuckler in my opinion if he’s going to last >=6 more seasons anywhere near 175+ innings.
Maybe DOB can shed some light into Greg Maddux’s psyche. Is he as competitive as Smoltz? Does he dread the possibility of retirement (and the boredom which could follow)? Is he hung up on records? Does he love the lockerroom enough to learn a knuckleball?
Who knows? Some guys just won’t leave the game unless its involuntary.

DOB are the Braves wearing yesteryear uniforms this year? If so what are the chances we will see the 1970 version? and I for one can’t wait to see Doggie and Smoltz hook it up. Anyone see the interview with Smoltz on sports south last night? I swear the man bleeds Braves baseball.

Cy Young, retired in 1911.
Walter Johnson, retired in 1927
Keep in mind, Cy Young pitched in an era that had starters pitching almost every game.
