No reason for Braves to look past this season
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Anyone still suggesting the Braves should wave a figurative white flag on this season and instead aim for the future must not be paying attention to the rampant parity in the NL wild-card race. Either that, or they don’t believe in this recent Braves resurgence.
And if that’s you on either point, then frankly, I have a difficult time understanding your reasoning.
It’s a day game and I’ve got to get out to the ballpark here in San Diego, so I’m going to keep this brief. But after noticing how bogged down the blog has gotten from the rash of posts during last night’s rout, I figured the least I could do is get a fresh post up here so you folks can get some quicker downloads and not operate at dial-up speed on DSL or whatever.
Anyway, the Braves have won eight of 10 games and four in a row, the last two against the NL West-leading Padres, who won their last five games before the All-Star break and had the NL’s lowest team ERA before the Braves came to town.
Atlanta has pounded nine homers and scored 26 runs in the first two games of a series that ends this (Sunday) afternoon. They beat up Chris Young in the opener Friday, after Young had been 5-1 with a 1.75 ERA in his previous eight starts. They beat up Chan Ho Park on Saturday, after Park had gone 4-1 in his previous seven starts.
The Braves are 5-1/2 games behind wild-card leader Cincinnati, a team they won a series against right before the All-Star break. They have reduced the wild-card almost in half since July 1, from 10 games to 5-1/2.
The Braves have the best record in the NL (8-3) in July and lead the majors in every major offensive category this month before Sunday’s games. They led in average (.340), runs (88), homers (25), OBP (.406) and slugging (.603), among others.
Of course, this isn’t going to last. Not this torrid hitting. They’re not going to hit like that as a unit for the rest of the season. No team could.
But the Braves are going to hit somewhere between that and their awful June work, and a midpoint between the two should be good enough if the Braves get a little better pitching (they’re winning despite modest starts from those other than Smoltz in July) and, especially, if they make at least one trade to help the bullpen a bit for the stretch.
The trade is still essential, in the view of many including Smoltz, who said as much after Saturday’s game, when he pleaded that Braves brass make a deal to bolster the cause if the Braves keep playing like they have and keep themselves in the thick of the playoff picture.
The Braves need to bring in a veteran to help stabilize a ‘pen that’s simply relying too much on journeyman and youth, and the cracks will show if you lean heavily on pitchers of that ilk during the tension-filled moments of a playoff race. Trust me, they will. Weaknesses are exposed in those moments.
But these Braves are otherwise pretty solid, especially if they can get Tim Hudson back on the kind of run he enjoyed before his ongoing and latest skid.
Kyle Davies is progressing in his rehab and should rejoin the rotation in late August. Smoltz is pitching very steadily and doing the smart thing by not trying to pitch complete games in mid-summer the way he did a year ago. Horacio Ramirez, three times out of four, pitches a gem. Chuck James has been brilliant at times and at least solid at others.
And the lineup … folks, it’s very tough from Nos. 2-7, as we’ve been reminded in recent weeks.
With Chipper Jones as hot as he is now _ and he is blazing, looking like the Chipper of years past (and not the past two years) _ and Andruw Jones hitting moon shots to the upper decks, and Renteria reeling off hitting streaks left and right, and LaRoche and Francoeur capable of going deep at any time, and McCann playing like a 28-year-old veteran instead of a 22-year-old….
Even Marcus Giles has come around in recent weeks, and X-rays on his swollen thumb yesterday were negative. The Braves think he’ll be back in there very soon, but in the meantime, Wilson Betemit merely got on base four times and hit a home run last night as Giles’ replacement.
Again, we know the Braves aren’t going to hit like this the rest of the season. But we should also know they’re not going to play like they did in June again. That 6-21 month was not representative of the talent on this team, and everyone knew it.
The NL wild card is a wide-open race, and if you ask teams like the Padres and Reds and others the Braves have won series from recently, they’d tell you that Atlanta absolutely should not be counted out. Orel Hershiser picked the Braves to win the wild card a few nights ago on Baseball Tonight, and right now the bespectacled former Dodgers pitcher is looking rather intelligent.

Orel knows his role, especially after 95. But once again i’m gonna say that while this road trip is huge and we’re off to a great start, August will be the key. We have a schedule in August that’s as soft as it gets and we need a minimum of 20 wins. None of the teams ahead of Atlanta are as good as they are in my opinion, and the only team I truly worry about is the Houston Astros for obvious reasons. D.O.B……ready to check out the new Busch???

No, not against anyone in particular. Just what was on my mind.
By the way, I’ll write something today about Smoltz’s comments after game regarding need to make a trade or two. He didn’t mention bullpen, but clearly implied that. It was too late last night to get them anywhere but online, so I wanted to wait and write a proper story or notebook item today about it, rather than file it strictly for blog at 2 a.m. EDT, where no one was left in our office to post a story if I’d written it then. Something at least one unnamed blogger probably will complain about. Right, RD?

I agree with every thing you said, DOB. I just hope they make that trade or two sooner rather than later. Otherwise, they might have to do something Skip Caray talked about during the broadcast on Friday night: After the Braves had blown the lead for something like the third or fourth time, Skip said, “I understand the Braves clubhouse collection will be adding a hangman’s noose.”
That wouldn’t be a bad idea with this bullpen.

Hey, Lew! Your post: “Back in the day there was a comedy improv group called Fiersign Theater. They once put out an album (yes, in the days before cd’s), aptly entitled “We’re All Bozos on This Bus”. Seems we may fit the bill. Ya think?”
Yeah, I think we’d fit the bill pretty well! :-)))
Talking about ‘albums’, my music system consists of a unit that plays vinyl records and has a built-in 8-track player.
And I have the 8-tracks to put in it….

DOB—great post and yes the Braves should not give up on the season. If the record in June was 12 and 15 instead of 6 and 21, the outlook would be a great deal different. A trade or two for the bullpen is a must a Browoski/Mota/of Wickman would help. If this was the AL, I would say yes to preparing for next year but the NL is wide open. Even though the Twins are winning, what realistic chance do they have against, the Tigers, White Sox, Yanks, Bosox, not to mention the West?

Good afternoon all. Thanks DOB for all the hard work you do. I’ve not read anything from you that I didn’t enjoy.
Ray looked good last night. Paronto came into the game in a key situation and delivered. The pen is being weeded though with the departure of Remlinger (I had no problem with him, it’s just his time had passed) and Reistma. Now, make a couple of more changes, ie Sosa & McBride (maybe they need some AAA work??), add a veteran or two and these team should be solid, and there would be no reason to think the Braves would not be in postseason.
Okay, Sunday afternoon nap time. I plan on listening to the game on MLB.com since I live no where near where the games are telecast. Thanks TBS.
Geaux Braves!!

Carolina Lady, I have a friend who has an ALBUM collection of over 9000 titles. Glad I don’t have to convert it to cd like I did with mine. Yes, sometimes it does seem like we’re all bozos on this bus. At least we’re among those who realize it and seem to revel in the fact. It is those in denial who are dangerous, as a rule. We just shouldn’t take ourselves all that seriously sometimes. DOB-I don’t doubt the Braves’ potential, but rather doubted what my eyes saw in June. As someone posted in the wee hours last night, it is very bad when you don’t have the confidence in the bullpen to hold an 11 run lead in the 8th, though. I think many of us are gun shy at the moment. Maybe it’s post traumatic stress from the 6-23 record. Maybe the bullpen should listen to that Night Ranger.

Good call on the “Bozos” theme, Lew. I think we could all use some big shoes and clown noses. For that matter, so could the bullpen! I have one of those record player/8-track combo monstrosities, too. It’s about six feet wide and 2 1/2 feet tall, and I banged the crap out of my elbow on it earlier this morning.

Carolina Lady,
… good afternoon !
… thought about you last night after you turned in, whether there might be anything of interest that you might be missing … we were so far ahead though, there wasn’t much, until the 8th that is when McCay McBride came in … quickly, 2 outs, man on first, no problem … then he walks a guy (pulse rate starts going up) … then a 3 run home run (oh, no …) … two seconds later, or so it seemed, bases loaded again , thinking (one swing of the bat makes it 11-7) … in comes Paranto, gets the 3rd out (whew) …
… Ray comes in and gets them out in the 9th (I like him) …
… my euphoria gone, all the old anxieties returned … the bullpen (groan) …
… I can tell you got a good good rest last night :))

Hi, Grinch! Switching over from the other blog a post I just made in response to your question about the hartebeest:
“The hartebeest! This goes back many months to when I had an invasion of crows who were attempting a hostile take-over. Journalist Jimmy Smith kindly imported a hartebeest from a cousin in Uganda because he believed that it’s presence would deter the crows. However, prior to it’s arrival (there’s another whole story involving the mail lady and Dave, our UPS guy - she’s doing well at the Oaks, I’m told, and we hope she’ll be back on her regular route before long! They’ve finally gotten the UPS truck clean and Dave no longer boycotts my packages), I discovered that my faithful little Daisy BB did a pretty fair job of peppering the hind feathers of the crows. It wasn’t long before they looked elsewhere to establish a territory.
So. When the hartebeest finally arrived (along with the police who were looking for a J. Smith, the name listed as ‘shipper’) there wasn’t much to do in the way of crow-scaring, so he naturally made the acquaintance of the local deer herd.
He fits in pretty well with them, as a hartebeest is an antelope from the open grassland and bush regions throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Can hit top speed bursts of 60+ mph! (I told Jimmy that there was no way I could catch the thing and if wanted him back he was going to have to come catch it himself!) Anyhow, here’s a link that has a picture and a little info.
DOB has the most educational blog on the sports beat! Sometimes we even discuss baseball! :-)))”
Lew, 9000 albums! That has to be a world record of some sort! :-))
It is apparent to me that the Braves are now a team and have a focused purpose and resolve. In my personal opinion, the Braves Nation can thank one John Smoltz for that (but, of course, I’m terribly predjudiced in his favor. An outstanding human being!)
They will lose some games this year, but NOW they know where they’re headed, they have a united goal, and I just wouldn’t be very surprised to see them achieve it. Is this what Bobby and JS have been waiting for? I shan’t be surprised about that, either. ;-)

Yes ma’am, 9000 albums. I don’t know if it’s a world record, but it does take up a goodly portion of the world’s records and his basement. Maybe the bullpen could use a hartebeest to keep them loose. Better yet, can the hartebeest close games?

dob has been disparaged on his own blog! allow journalist jimmy smith (who learned everything from dob) to defend our esteemed blog leader who has freshened the blog on a sunday so that we may continue at a reasonable pace. sometimes dob gets just a bit testy with this journalist but that is a product of frustration at not yet receiving the wurlitzer prize that jimmy smith continues to pursue for dob. now, betemit - is he destined to play only when thumb injuries occur? how many sick thumbs have there been so far this season? where does one place a thumb to wreak such havoc? and, while thweren’t is no longer in common usage, still it is powerful and is journalist’s only answer to shan’t. now, it is an afternoon game and someone must wake up bob. hk, perhaps we could see a graph before the game? and what has become of our friend, scribe? all journalists must stick together in this time of journalistic scrutiny.

Thumb health can be as dangerous as toe health. I remember back at good old UGA, Herschel Walker once hurt his thumb. I think a hurt thumb also ended Steve Garvey’s consecutive game streak and ended a season for Bob Horner. One does not trifle with thumbs, either. Jimmy, I for one, would like to thank you for your public service in regards to toe health. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and almost lost a toe to an ulcer 11/2 years ago. I luckily found the BEST toe doctor in the country and he saved the troubled digit. Keep getting the word out, esteemed journalist.

lew, thank you for remembering journalist jimmy smith in this kind way. as you will know, jimmy smith has been touting toe health for many months on this blog. toes are not to be trifled with. now, thumb issues seem to be wearing down this braves team. chipper missed games due to a sore thumb (betemit responded by going 3-3 with a hr). giles missed a game due to a sore thumb (betemit was on base 4 times and hit a hr). remember, bob horner had a bad thumb but also famed ken oberkfell broke his thumnb not long after coming over from st. louis in 1984. the thumb is important to team health - but the toe is vital to team health. jimmy smith would not say it if it thweren’t so.

Best of all, the Hartebeest might frighten off the bullpen altogether, and cavort and munch contentedly on the outfield grass, giving Ed Mangan’s crew some much-needed rest. Man, I thought my record collection was fairly big (about 300). I’ll go hide now.

yes, carolina lady they are a team, and that was evidenced last night when (as you pointed out) chipper ran so hard to and through first base. it was such a different sight that it caught this journalist’s attention. this team is playing hard - everyone of them. chipper is leading by example. he will not inspire with words (well, maybe he will inspire a horse) but his superior play says much about what he wants to accomplish. let’s pull for him to establish a new record today. now, hartebeest … jimmy smith’s cover about growing up in cordele has been blown with the explanation to grinch. now, the authorities may be knocking again at jimmy smith’s door. perhaps dob will provide an alibi for his colleague.

Lew, that number of albums is mind-boggling! Each one plays for about 3 hours, right?
3 x 9,000 = 27,000 hours of music
27,000/24 hours per day = 1,125 days
1,125 days = 3.08 years of non-stop music.

dob, havent checked in much lately but continue to read.
this team needs a bone thrown their way by management in the way of a solid pen guy, it just cant come from the orgamization this year. sosa is overpitched and hasnt had a break for his arm probably in 18 months with wbc and winter ball. he doesnt have the juice he had last year.
this team has the oportunity to be the indians of last year and close strong and fortunately the rest of the league is “balanced” to make it posible to end up with a wild card. i still expect the mets to fold if glavine does his usual thing (or has he found hgh ectsasy as well) or pedro flames out. in spite of comments otherwise, this is a young team with vets sprinkled that is coming up not folding. give them a bit of a chance in the pen and their confidence will soar.
still think this team was too young to handle 33 of 50 games on the road to start a season, or any team for that matter. need to tuck frenchy in bed earlier on the road, dob, too many nights out with chipper and the like of jeter on his bday.
gram attended my high school and was a year ahead, he was a literary genius even then.it got him into harvard based on those expectations alone as he probably was given a diploma based on his grades. he left there after a year to ultimately die mysteriously in the deser, maybe in emmy lou’s arms. maybe not a bad way to go. glad you brought him up the other day.

GlassHF, If they don’t deal now, that player may not be available when they need him. If you deal now, and fall out of it you cab turn the player(s) around and re-deal him. The deadline deals as well as the deadline itself is a risk-reward thing. As long as the team continues to win despite the struggles in the ‘pen, JS will more than likely wait until midnight on July 31st to pull the trigger on a potential trade.

Giles could be back in lineup in couple or three games, Bobby said. X-rays negative, feels better today. Betemit playing again today and probably tomorrow.

We are serious about our music (but I swear, DOB, there is no Twisted Sister). Chipper’s theme song when he bats is “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, with the late, great-yes, great DOB, Randy Rhodes on guiter. Chipper is a very discriminating listener. Come on Glass-Alfonseca? Didn’t he have toe problems, too. Check out a DRays pitcher named Seth McClung. He began the year as a starter and lost 10 games with a 6. something ERA with tons of walks. They sent him down to AAA Durham to become a reliever. Since he has been there, he has pitched in about 10 games and is 1-0 with 2 saves, 17 strikeouts and one BB in 11 innings. His WHIP is less than 1. He throws routinely in the 96-97 mph range and has been clocked at 102. His problem when starting was he pitched well for 4 or 5 innings and then tire and lose his control. He seems to have adapted to relief and closing and is making just slightly over the major league minimum. We should look at him. We could get him cheap. He’s a real nice guy, too. He has one of the nastiest curves I have ever seen and good movement on his 2 and 4 seamers, too.

Journalist Jimmy, I am mortified that my inquisitiveness might have compromised your freedom, though if these investigators are currently believing in a 60mph cow, I expect you have little to fear. Snowball’s Chance, the only thing I’ve read about Gunderson since we drafted him is that his stuff is actually a little flat compared to his earlier years at OSU. He is not a power pitcher, and needs to re-establish his slider. But that’s just somebody’s opinion that I read.
I think that Devine, who was a similar pick last year, didn’t come up to the bigs until late August, and he was probably a better prospect than Gunderson.

I am growing a little weary of people not showing respect for Marcus Giles. Everybody wants to trade Marcus. I didn’t have time to read every post on this blog, so I’m not sure anybody mentioned trading Marcus, but I would bet someone did because it’s usually all over every Braves’ blog.
Marcus is having a down year offensively. I think it’s an aberration because in the past he has been a gap hitter with tons of doubles and 15-20 homers each year. I think his offensive capabilities will come back before long. He busts his hump every play of every game, dives for balls, takes shots on double plays and still turns them, and is fundamentally sound. I saw him play in the minors, and he was an average second baseman [defensively] at best. But he has worked hard to improve his defense and is now an outstanding defensive second baseman.
Marcus is a winner in my opinion. If I was a manager, I would want players like Marcus on my team and would raise he** if he was even mentioned as trade bait.

DOB-money spent on music can NEVER be money mispent, whether you spend it on Country, Rock or Kabandas. The only reason I know how many I own (half of your collection DOB) is for insurance purposes. My friend with the 9,000 had some stolen in a break in and was quite glad he had documentation. They took all of the original release Beatle and Mothers of Invention. The insurance company actually replaced the albums wherever possible. Talk to all after the game.

Hey Jimmy, I’m alive and well, just on vacation (been to Vegas and currently about 10 minutes south of The Ted) and had some other non-baseball-blog things that have required me spending time on the Internet working, not playing.
But I’ll be back here more often soon. Promise.
DOB, I couldn’t agree more. Smoltz’s comment of needing an 8-2 homestand was almost right on. I felt if the Braves could go 6-4 or better and continue the momentum into this huge 10-game roadie to start the second half, they would vault themselves smack dab into the race.
And while there are eight games left on this swing, that’s exactly what’s happened. If you’re a Braves fan, you gotta be praying the front office can pull something off in the next two weeks to get a vet arm in the bullpen.
They won’t hit like this the rest of the season, but they’re good enough to win the wild card. And that, my friends, is a good thing.
Like I’ve been saying the past month to anybody who will listen, if the Braves are in the race in September, playing playoff-type games every night, it’s going to fire up the fan base, especially considering how everybody had just about given them up for dead during that 3-20 death march in June.
Win the wild card, carry that momentum into the playoffs. Instead of sleep-walking through the final week, then opening up at home before 10,000 empty seats and a bored fan base, you open up on the road, steal one of the first two, then come home to a sold-out, fired-up Turner Field, two wins from your first NLCS since 2001.
Long way to go, but hey, it’s a hell of a lot more realistic now than it was three weeks ago. Sorry Mark Bradley: with all due respect, you’re way off base on this one.
Gotta big day tomorrow, so I gotta go get ready. See y’all soon.

Now that Adam Laroche is officially out of my doghouse, it seems like a great time to offer him up as trade bait. He’s picked the perfect time to lift his stats. How about LaRoche and Sosa to San Francisco for Matt Cain? I don’t think LaRoche is a core part of our offense and he’s holding up Thorman, anyway. I’ll concede that Horacio will need to stay here for the time-being, but we’ve still got some other interesting parts we could sell.

The Rockies and Brewers are ahead of us in the wild card race and both clubs have been struggling lately. 7 straight Ls for Colorado and 5 for the Brewers. With a little help, the Braves could pass those clubs in the next few days.

just finally catching up on the posts, and naturally the Mike Gonzalez mention caught my eye. If it were anybody but the ESPN-beciles bringing it up, I might get just a little excited. DOB……
couldn’t they make moves that both improve the “possiblity” of making it to post season play this year and actually being able to do somthing when they get there? But also looking towards the future a little bit.
I’m not neccessarliy saying “don’t trade away a top prospect” to aquire a player. I’m just saying if they do trade away a prospect, do it for sombody that can not only help this year but be part of their future (like a Carl Crawford). I’m not saying “go get” Crawford, just sombody like him that is good enough to help now, but young enough to stick around a while.
I actually think this team has enough “fire power” to overtake the wild card as it sits right now. That’s how crappy the rest of the teams are. But this team is no different than those Braves teams that proceeded them. THEY WILL GET PUMPED IN THE PLAYOFFS IF THEY DON’T SHORE UP THE PEN!
So all I ask is that JS doesn’t mortgage the future for sombody that probably won’t be all that much help this year or the future. Like that whopper of a trade for Andy Ashby a few years back. If he trades any of the “TOP” prospects for anything less than an above average to great player, I can’t stand by that. If that is all that is available to be had in trades this year (nobody really outstanding out there to be had as far as I can see), then YES, I would rather they look toward the future.
I’d rather miss the playoffs this year, and start a new run next season than gamble that this is the year it’s going to happen and be paying for bad trades for the next 5 years.
Sorry to ramble on, it’s all I know how to do. LOL!

I have to admit, a month ago I was all over Chipper. I figured he’d be a good “singles and RBI” guy if he stayed healthy (BIG IF), but I was sure his power stroke was gone.
Guess I was wrong!….but lot of games left for him to get hurt again! Sorry, gotta to be a pessimist! But it’s reality.
But if he stays healthy the rest of the way, it would obviously be a big lift for the team. As JS would say “it’s kind of like making a trade for a big name player!”

I think I’m gonna stick to that theory. LOL!! We don’t need to trade for bullpen help people! Just the opposite. Trade all of the pitching for MORE POWER!! Soriano, Carlos Lee, etc….
Obviously I’m kidding. But it is a thought due to the fact that “good” bats could probably be had easier than picking up reliable arms.

JS has had three dinners with the Pads GM this weekend. If we trade Betemit for Linebrink, will he be our closer? It doesn’t look like he’s done it before.

Anybody else think that Thorman is Klesko all over again? Brought up for his bat, but placed out of position, so you take the good with the bad.
I guess you’ve got to pick your poison: Thorman’s bat and below average defense that might cost you in the OF. Or great defense from Langerhans, but a “true” number eight hitter in the lineup.
It’s a tough choice. These pitchers could use all the defensive help they could get. But what’s a better defense for this bullpen than scoring 12 runs a game? LOL
I’m on the fense, but right now I’ll take Thorman’s glove as long as he’s hitting well. If he cools off with the bat, I guess you gotta go with Langerhans.

I have to wonder whether McDowell is part of the problem. I don’t know that he is, but it seems like none of the younger Braves have much focus on the mound. Found this quote from Mike Remlinger (not that he is a great pitcher any more but he has been around a while). Talking about Mazzone, he said:
“Especially with the younger guys, Leo could be a little bit gruff,” Remlinger said. “If he didn’t get it the way he wanted, he would let you know about it.
“Even he and I butted heads a couple of times. But the next day, he didn’t hold things against you and it was time to get back to work. He helped me tremendously.
“I lot of guys don’t want to hear the truth. Sometimes you need to hear, ‘You’re not very good right now.’ Sometimes you have to face that reality and get things fixed.”
I just wonder if a little of that attitude might be needed with some of our young relievers. Calvin made a good point that Bobby Cox must have been hot at McBride last night, sending out McDowell to pull him. Is McDowell just too “nice” to these guys?

What’s up with you Mets fans? Are you guys giving up? Are the Braves that much insider your head that you think this Braves team will overtake you? Very interesting.
Well, I don’t think the Braves will win the East nor should they be trying to. The wild card is much more realistic. I predicted a month ago while the Braves were in their June swoon that they would get it together and come back strong. I believe when it is all said and done that Atlanta will be the wild card and the Mets will win the division. The Dodgers will win the west and the Cardinals will run away with the Central. The Astros and Reds will fade.
The Reds’ pitching is even worse than the Braves and the Astros can’t score runs.
A trade stil has to be made. We need some kind of relief help. Preferably Scott Williamson or Joe Nathan. Two days ago I would have said Nathan is a no go. But, now with Torri Hunter going on the DL, whatever slim chance the Twins had to get back into the race has been totally obliterated. No way the Twins can hang with the Sox (both red and white), Yanks, and Tigers.
Question is what would the Twins want in return for Nathan. I bet Betemit and Jurries would be awfully attractive to them.
I am assuming that JS is doing all he can do to make something happen. Smoltz has laid down the gauntlet. This team needs that one more piece to make a run. Let’s get it done. I have a feeling it will.

My Lady, I almost forgot … you’ve got an impressive neighbor in that Wilford Brimley … Character actor supreme! Blood River may be my favorite, but his list of credits is almost endless. I liked his Mr. Smith, another of Jimmy’s relatives, in Remo Williams … but Joel Grey stole the show in that one …he was a hoot!
We done good today, My Lady!

DOB, I get about as much info. on the Braves as you reporters do and I live 250 miles away from Atlanta. I got angry at you about the anti-Chipper blog you posted and so many turncoats agreed that Chipper was done. Do you recall me (and me only) saying Chipper had several good years left ? Where are the anti-Chipper fans now that he has a record for extra base hits and was player of the week before the All-Star game ?

Journalist Bob, I agree with you on Wilford Brimley; an entertaining man to be sure. Who would you trust more to sell you life insurance from a saddle? The only comparable man would be Ben Johnson (the cowboy, not the english poet). Alas, he has passed away, though, leaving Mr. Brimley as the sole reliable western spokesman. And who else could make the eating of oats seem not only like one’s patriotic duty, but a duty one would be brought to tears with joy to perform? Carolina Lady, you are in the presence of a great man. Ok, breaktime over. I must write more…yes, I take a break from writing by writing.

HK, if I were good with numbers, I’ll bet that I could make a case for the Buttermint Babe being the most valuable player … when he starts at second, we don’t lose.
When Wilson fills in for Larry, Chipper magically becomes Chipper … and the Giles’ swing was almost level after his earlier respite!
Andruw may well be enamored with how far he he’s hitting the ball … I’d like much better if he were hitting into a firm left side, going with the pitch, and maintaining his balance throughout his swing. In addition to being more effective, he’s more apt to remain healthy!
Regardless of his artifical intelligence, Larry will be the Braves’ MVP … unless something very strange happens.

Okay, break time again. JJMB, just went to match.com and typed in “My A$$” and got your face. It’s a free blog and everyone here loves baseball (except the mets fans). Things get off-topic usually when there isn’t a game going on or every possible recent trade rumor has been confirmed or debunked, and everyone has agreed to disagree on whether BC or JS knows whet the heck they’re doing, and we’re patiently waiting on new DOB updates to discuss. Variety is the spice of life, so kick back and enjoy, or don’t. No need to harsh everyone’s mellow.

“p” player pete orr is no longer the first reserve at second base. he is hitting .211 and is doing little off the bench. why not bring up prado or pena for the superior defense and maybe an occassional clutch hit? also, “p” player todd pratt appears to have nothing to teach mccann. why not let b. pena come back and get his bat back on the team? he was hiiting .321 when sent down. pratt is hitting .189. these questions are offered for comment. now, chipper jones - hk has named him the braves most intelligent player and look how chipper has responded! bet this is the first time he’s ever experienced such a compliment. in fact, pretty sure it has never happened before.

Harsh everyone’s mellow … dude, that reminds me of the few Dead shows I attended back in the late 80s-early 90s, in the, uh, experimental era before i got serious about career and getting married so i could divorce, etc.
Anyway … what a game, what a weekend. I just was going through stats and came across a remarkable one, which I just called to add to my game story that may or may not be posted already. Anyway, check this out:
The Braves lead the majors with a .341 average, 27 homers and 98 runs in 12 games in July (9-3), after hitting .244 with 26 homers and 94 runs in 27 games in June (6-21).
More homers and runs in July in fewer than half as many games than June. Unbelievable.
Giles said he’ll test thumb tomorrow and could play tomorrow or at least during St. Lous series. Though the way Betemit played in San Diego, at least Braves can be comfortable knowing they’re OK a couple more days until he gets back. Other than a couple of awkward stumbles going for pop-ups and a few strikeouts, Betemit handled himself quite well.
Chipper’s on fire, folks. Sit back and enjoy his, uh, what was it, his mellow. Don’t harsh his mellow? Anyway… dudes and dudettes, I’d love to chat, but gotta get to my room, pack and get to airport for redeye flight THROUGH ATLANTA to get to st. louis.
i know, i know, sounds stupid. but with 6 p.m. game tomorrow, only way to get there in time to work is this crapola itinerary, other than taking some cropduster or airline i could get bumped from because i don’t have any status whatsoever. so it’s delta thorugh ATL. if you see a zombie between terminals at Hartsfield at about 7 a.m. tomorrow, pat him on the back and buy him a coffee.
later. i may try to logon at san diego airport before flight.

Jimmy, how can anyone be expected to work in San Diego. The eather’s great and the food is fantastic, especially the Mexican and the fresh Seafood! The last time we were there, I got my hair styled, nails buffed and beard trimmed at the Del … had a good time chatting with the staff … swapping tall tales, Romeo and Juliet stuff, no baseball … I didn’t realize how bad I was in need of that treatment until they asked me my occupation in order to resolve a bet. Maybe they can trade Ryan Langerhans and Todd Pratt for a closer ? Diaz hits .330 and is decent in the OF defensively. Plus Thorman can play OF too. I would trade Marcus Giles before I traded Wilson Betemit. Betemit is basically another Edgar Renteria if given the opportunity to start and he can play anywhere in the infield (besides catcher and pitcher) if needed.

oh, carolina lady, perhaps you are right. elevation of the toe and hoof is a proven remedy but the listerine may have done the trick. have we heard from dob if he has had success with the listerine? since he is on the road, he may have delayed treatment. while on the road he might try a spray of wd-40 on the affected toe-nail. toes are not to be trifled with - he should begin treatment as soon as possible. if seen soaking his feet in listerine he must understand it will not help him with women. jimmy smith would call that the anti-baby seal effect.

the braves have a closer, what is needed are a couple of someones to get them to the point of needing the closer. i’m speaking of ken ray of course.
as for scott thorman i think the braves have a solid .300 hitter with very good power. playing full time we can look for 25-30 homers a year and somewhere around 100 rbi’s depending on where he’s placed in the lineup. and his glove is a heck of a lot better than klesko, either on first or left field.
DOB, there are always those negative nabobs hanging around….but heck you’re old enough to know that. if i had to guess i’d say you have a solid 90% backing on here and the other 10% are going to attack somebody wherever they go. it’s their normal way of doing things. most of them are the same at home or at work. their glass is never half full.
i have read you for some time and now in this blog i must say your performance is so far ahead of your compatriots they are becoming a joke. they put it up and then do nothing to interact with us. that is no way to run a blog. you have the formula worked out, just keep it up. you are truly appreciated.

Grinch, your “three nickels for a quarter” trade reminds me of a true story from my youth … one of my uncles used to offer me my choice of a quarter or two dimes … and sometimes the choice of either a nickel or a dime. I always made the “wrong” choice.
He thought it was very, very funny … and it was repeated time and again. It was my most successful “con” … until one day my sister blabbed “Bobby knows better, he only does that so you’ll you’ll keep giving him money”. She was mad because I wouldn’t share my profits.
It might be the reason that I’m generally opposed to trades … my “wrong” ones were always the best!

Two points if you’ll bear with me. One, I am a babe with blogs having just found this one four days ago. Am already in love with Carolina Lady and flbravesgal, and am hugely impressed with all the journalists, Lew, DOB only to name a few. JJSB, just read on and you’ll love it too! Two, I spend most of my time in southern China where baseball is played in the morning while I am at work - which bites - and while English is the ‘Universal language’ of business, noone speaks it well enough to actually converse about anything. Was sitting in a bar last night called The Watering Hole when a guy walks up and says “Hi, I heard there was another American in here. Mind if I join you?” We spent a couple of minutes with some strained, not so interesting comments about stuff when I ask him where he’s from. “Morganton, N.C.” he says. I’m impressed I tell him; that’s the home of a very famous furniture manufacturer I work with. He asks me where I’m from and I tell him Atlanta, Ga. His eyes get bright and he says, “The home of the Braves!!” We spent the next hour and a half buying each other beers and rejoining about players from Rico Carty and Eddie Matthews to Jeff Bouroughs and Brad Komminsk. Good to know there is one ‘Universal language’ which is the Braves!
Wild card, hell! Let’s kick some Mutt Butt!

Thanks, Bob, Journalist. Think this will be ‘home’ for a while. As for Mr. Franklin, help me with my history. Was his style with a little wine and loads of intelligence, or vice versa? As far as playing baseball in the morning, excuse my limited literary license, I meant to say “where Braves baseball is played in the morning. Being 12 hours ahead, you’d think I would know the score before the games begin; alas, the only way I can keep up with the Braves is through writeups in ESPN and AJC.com - and now this blog.
As far as CL is concerned, having parents and two siblings in the Charlotte area, she sounds like the embodimet of quite a few classy ladies I have met from the Tarheel state. And with a wide range of perspective; I haven’t thought of the Fiersign Theater in 20 years. But she’s just one of a group on this blog I think I’d truly enjoy at a Saturday afternoon barbeque - where of course, we’d argue the merits of Lexington style BBQ vs. ‘real’ BBQ, but I digress. As for the blog itself - priceless. Where else can you get insights on the Braves plus medical advice, music reviews, poetry, travel tips, critter control, etc., and all with a terrific sense of humor. You guys rock - guess that’s a hint as to where I fall on the music barometer as well.
Gotta go brush with Listerine. See ya!

The Wild Card isn’t bad because the Astros,Marlins, and Angels all went to the World Series as Wild Card teams (Marlins & Angels even won it). Ken Ray is not reliable as a closer IMO. We need a proven closer. I’m glad the team is winning now. Credit the starting pitching and offense though. The dreded bullpen still lurks…

suds, right? welcome to the blog, suds. carolina lady is just as you described - a classy lady. now, barbecue … jimmy smith’s good friend is a bbq champion and has cooked at competitions all over the south and at the big ones in memphis and kansas city. if bob liked pork better jimmy smith would share a plate of delicious pork barbecue with bob - but since bob does not care for country ham - bob would never tolerate a plate of barbecue pork. brisket, perhaps? at any rate, journalist leaves you with this admonition -toes are not to be trifled with. now, all bloggers, this braves season has turned on a toe - and it all started with probing journalism from dob (famous toe article earlier in the month). the thumb articles are good, but cutting to the toe of the matter, it will be the toe article that finally lands dob an elusive wurlitzer prize.

hooray for the return of meaningful Braves games! Think 2 out of 3 is doable in St. Louis? I’d say the weekend sweep makes only one win absolutely necessary. Go 1 for 3 in St. Louis and 2 for 4 in Philly and we’re fine. That’s a 6-4 trip and right in line with what the team needs on the road the rest of the way. Gota win 3 of 4 at home but not the road. Now, if we can somehow get 2 of 3 from the Cards…

it has been said that chipper is the hoss right now - toe in cheek, of course - and this is a true depiction for, (1) chipper is performing better than ever, and (2) chipper is indeed a hoss.
as we reflect on this season, let us recall the turning points, (disregard the removal of reitsma and remlinger, a given) (1) the famous toe article from dob and (2) the curative powers of elevation and (3) listerine (thanks, carolina lady - if she had chosen wd-40 instead, chipper might have gotten better but he would have had very slippery feet), and (4) hk’s outstanding chart rendering chipper smart - these have combined to propel chipper jones to stardom (again).
now, in medical terms … “rolled toe is a common practice, and may be done to a shoe, the actual toe of the bare hoof, or both. rolling, or rounding, decreases the amount of hoof at the ground surface of the toe, making it easier for the horse to “breakover” in stride.”
we are indeed seeing a breakover season and chipper is taking it in stride. the season has turned on a toe. toes are not to be trifled with. go braves!

Want some really positive news? Chew on this… One of the better ways to see if a team is having a lot of “luck” or really earning their won-loss record is to look at runs scored for the season versus runs allowed. It’s almost always the case that at least one or two teams have records far better than their RS/RA indicates they should have and one or two have far worse. This is a result of luck, in most cases, and tends to correct itself. That said, look at the wild card teams arranged not by W-L but by Runs Scored minus Runs allowed. I think this is a very encouraging picutre…
Dodgers +40 Braves +8 Rockies +5 Giants +2 Reds -8 Dbacks -18 Astros -19 Brewers -73!
This tells me the Brewers are due for a hard fall and the Dodgers, Rocks and Giants are the teams we have to worry about. Thank goodness Gagne is done for the year.

August 2nd, 1993 Braves were 10 games behind the Giants.
As it is right now, the Braves have the chance to be less than 10 games behind the Mets coming into August. Because of this, I think it’s a little premature and short sighted to simply aim for the wild card. The Mets have the best record in the NL. If we aim for the Mets, we will more than likely win the wild card. And there is an outside shot of winning the division. Especially with the schedule August provides.
Since July 3rd, the Braves have beaten three number 1 teams. They beat the Central leading Cards. They Beat the Wild Card leading Reds. And we just pounded the West leading Padres. Our offense is awake. We just need our pitchers to cut down on the Runs allowed. Sam’s got a point on the Run Differential. Ours just became positive. It did so with a force. I expect to see great things.
Chipper Jones. This man is unbelievable. I watched last year as both Smoltz and Andruw took the team on their backs and carried them into the post season. That was amazing. But Chipper. What he is doing right now is far and beyond that. The pitching, while improved, hasn’t been that much better. We did give up nearly 7 runs a game in San Diego. But when you have a guy like Chipper on fire in the middle of your line up every one benefits. You can see it up and down this line up. When Chipper is cold, the team is cold. When Chipper is hot, this team is unstoppable.

Good morning, all!
Well. Catching up on the morning’s posts, I’ve gotten a near-overdose of extremely flattering compliments! I don’t even know how to respond except to say Thank YOU! and try very hard not to let my hatsize increase! (I will admit to a really big grin!) :-)))
Welcome, Suds! What a delight to have such an erudite, observant, witty, and discerning gentlemen join us! :-) You’ll LOVE exchanges with Jimmy, PENN, Bob, HK, and all the other wonderful people here! I enjoyed reading of your encounter with a fellow Braves fan! That had to have been a really enjoyable visit!
Wouldn’t it be GREAT to have a huge BBQ where all the bloggers could gather, meet and talk?? That would really be fun!
Went online to my local paper this morning to see what it had to say about the terrific Braves play of late and found this: “Mets, Cardinals Post Impressive Wins”. WHAT??? Well, it’s another Southern newspaper that is owned by NY Times and lack of regional coverage is one of the reasons why I cancelled my home subscription. (I go by their online site to check obituaries, believe it or not! :-)) Thank Goodness for DOB’s blog!!
Jimmy, did you get a mental image of Bob jumping back out of his hot tub, dripping wet and getting water all over the place, to restate his taste for country ham? :-))) I loved it!

Hey Suds, welcome. How in the world did you end up in China? I thought Vermont was a long way from the action. Tennessee Paul, I agree we should not concede anything yet, but let’s get to .500 first. I will feel considerably better when we no longer have a losing record. I pretty well agree with Smoltz’s demands, but still don’t see much veteran help available. Well, we do have the best GM in the business. I wonder how much longer the bats can keep this up. I imagine Chipper won’t quite hit .500 for a whole lot longer. However, .333 works for me the rest of the season.

ESPN Really disappointed last night. The Braves sweep a first place team. Chipper is setting records with every swing of the Bat and not one mention of it on the MLB page for ESPN. They talked about the staples, NY, Boston, Chicago, Detroit. Even rattled off some stuff about the Tampa Rays and KC Royals. ESPN is becoming a bigger and bigger dissapointment with each passing day. They used to be informative to watch, now it’s just a bunch of talking heads with inflated egos.
Right now, this is how the hitters perform when the pitcher is throwing:
Pitcher RS RA
Hudson 5.20 4.90
Smoltz 5.05 4.35
Ramirez 4.78 5.11
James 8.25 3.25
James is a little misleading. He has consistently allowed more runs with each passing start. But the Bats have gotten better and better with each of his starts. The Run Differential in games James starts is 20, for Hudson it’s 6. Not too Ace like. For Smoltz it’s 14.
Lew: Agreed on the .500 mark. But at the same time, Aiming for the Mets would also mean surpassing the .500 line. We should be above .500 by the end of the Month. Once August Arrives, we should get on a tear the likes of which baseball has never seen.

Journalist Bob, you were positively waxing Holtzian last night! It made we want to get up, run out of the locker room and beat Northwestern. I, too, picked wrong on the “Three nickels for a quarter” thing, but it was because I was gulliable, not clever. Journalist Jimmy, you may have hit upon something with this “Rounding.” Although at the moment I believe, uh, Chipper wouldn’t give up his secret toe remedy in the interests of preserving competative advantage, he must be interviewed post-season and immediately dissected upon the completion of his carreer to benefit sports science and toe-doctors everywhere. Was the movie “Rounders” actually about Matt Damon’s hooves? Is it the secret to the hartebeest’s great speed? This must be investigated. I agree a mighty barbeque should be held, with many piggies and many trimmings. Suds could provide the suds (Tsingtao would be nice), and we could find out once and for all if Bob likes pork. If not, and he were willing, we could round his hooves, spray them with WD-40 and send him in pursuit of the hartebeest as an alternative meat source. 50,000 sub-Saharan lions, leopards and cheetas can’t be wrong! :-)

Like DOB says….this team cannot expect to continue hitting the way it is. That is a huge problem… Right now they are outscoring what the pichers are giving up. I don’t see the pitching improving so they have to keep scoring 8 runs a game and as we know even 8 is not always enough. No lead is safe with this bunch of “ham & eggers”. So unless and until JS brings in pitching help it looks like Ray closing with Yates in the 8th and McBride to get out key lefties. That’s not strong enough in my opinion.

The starting pitching has been good. Smoltz and Hudson pitched well last 2 stars and C. James gave up 5 runs but wasn’t that bad. Its not that bad to give up 5 runs per 7 innings. Its the bullpen that gives up 3 or 4 runs in 2 innings that’s the problem…

Suds,
We have a few misguided souls that pay our neighboorhood a visit from time to time … but I posit that the ones who call this home are mighty fine folks; including some good, refined Met fans too … it is indeed a good place to hang your hat, the best on the Internet.
Regarding Mr. Franklin’s style; a little wine, lots of fine women and loads of intelligence … not sure about the versa but he was a man of prose and rumors of his vices are still rampant to this day!
Speaking of Morganton … back in the late sixties - early seventies, we had a little home furnishings center that featured both Henredon and Drexel-Heritage … one of my favorite financial disasters, but at least my frequent trips to Morganton, High Point and Hickory netted some good food and fine acquaintances and … saved a bunch on cigarettes too.
I had a pretty good idea as to the intent of your “morning baseball in China” comment … was just “havin’ you on” a bit … sort of my way of saying howdy.
Me thinks that we do need to have a barbeque - but there’s no reason for any argument, real, eastern style BBQ is where it’s at in NC!
This place truly rocks … it really does … but some of us with sunburned necks still prefer the old Mountain William music that echos throughout these southern hills of ours! Or is is “ourn” … oh well, it’s all good, just like fried corn, okra, buttermilk and Braves Baseball! No slight to country ham, hotwater cornbread, or pot-liquor intended.
Have you tried getting WGST on MLB.com? All games are carried live with replays available for those who work in the morning hours when the games are being played.

OH so many things to mention and so little time.
Carolina Lady, i am connected to your state whether it’s North or South. lived in charlotte for 8 years and my number one son was born there. and his mother was born in Columbia and graduated from that Gamecock school. i also have owned mountain property at Lake Lure and at Lake Keowee.
Now for eating some good barbecued pork (and chicken and brunswick stew). journalist Bob and I agree Atlanta’s Old Hickory House may in fact be the best we’ve ever had, and especially in the olden days.
I’ve found another that ranks right up there. Fallin’s Real Pit Barbecue in Thomasville has been there 30 years and is an institution in South Georgia and North Florida. Fallin serves some really good food. I asked the owner why it is so good and he said, “I only buy the very best meat money can buy. You know that old story about not being able to make chicken salad out of chicken feathers, well you can’t make good barbecue out of cheap, low grade meat. and fresh cut red oak makes some mighty tasty smoke too.” makes sense to me.
and journalist jimmy, i’m thinking chipper’s magic toe formula is better known by the name of “cortizone.” whatever it is i’m voting for it. has anyone else noticed how fast chipper has been running out those infield ground balls lately? that is how baseball is supposed to be played.

I, too, am surprised Suds is impressed with me, but I’ll take all worship and adoration passed my way. Tennessee Paul-I sure hope we’re above .500 by the end of the road trip. If we can be 7 or 8 back from the Mets by the time we play them head to head, I like our division chances. They never could play us straight up. If Chipper continues anywhere vaguely close to where he is now, the chants of Larry Larry will be anguished to say the least.

I’m smoking reality. All across MLB pitchers ERA’s are 4.00 or higher esp. in the American league. Very few have 3.00 and under quality ERA’s. An average MLB game is 6-5 these days. This is the era of the homerun. You gotta score to win. Once you get past most team’s #1 and #2 starters, its offense city upon the rest of the starters.

Journalists Bob and Penn; this conversation is making me hungry! I lived in Swainsboro (south Georgia…about 90 miles east of Savannah and 35 miles from Vidalia) the last 10 years before coming back to ATL and the best BBQ I had down there was at Lew’s (no relation) in Twin City. The ribs fell off the bone and neither ribs, pork, beef or chicken needed any sauce (though their sauce was fantastic). That, to me is the mark of properly cooked meat. Also, like any excellent hole-in-the-wall BBQ shack, they were only open ‘till about 2 pm three or four days a week, assuring food that has just come right out of the smoke. Man, my stomach is louder now than my A/C!

… watching Discovery landing process on the NASA site this morning, incredible video, (24/7 for the last 13 days) … as I watched transfixed, something slowly dawned on me …
… I’ve mentioned before on this blog something called ‘sing-song-itus’, where sports commentators end alot of their sentences going up an octave … started in golf 3-4 years ago, then tennis, then to other sports … once you become aware of it it drives you (me at least) crazy … it has really hurt the delivery of some of my favorite announcers (Al Michaels and Dick Enberg for example) …
… what slowly sunk in this morning is that the Houston mission control guy, whose job is to be a running commentator for the public, is ending every sentence going up a few notes at the end … as I thought back, they’ve always done it, as long as I can remember … my guess is that this delivery style became associated with the high drama, for all of us, of the early space flights, and it has naturally spread from there …
.. so it all started in NASA 40 years ago, not in golf !!!… two revelations in one week, first listerine, now this, more than I can stand !!
… on a sing song scale of 1 to 10:
Mission Control.10
Al Michaels……9
Dick Enberg……9
Chip Caray…….8
Don Sutton…….5
Bob Rathbun……2

This series against the Cardinals is a real big test for the Braves. The Cardinals are even hotter than the Braves are right now (7 wins in a row) and it is in St. Louis. I think this is actually good for the Braves, it will be a good gauge as to how close this team really is to competing for the WC (and the NL crown for that matter). I know we got Weaver tonight, and I think someone said it’s Suppan tomorrow… to hell with 2 of 3, lets sweep these red terds and stretch our win streak to 8. I said a couple weeks ago that I will not be convinced the Braves can take the WC unless they ripped off 8 or 9 in a row (to make up for the 10 straight L’s). They are hitting great right now, but they are not necessarily pitching that well right now. Hudson is an absolute mess, HoRam is (to me) still the same pitcher he’s always been - inconsistent #4 starter, Chuck James looks good but he has been progressively getting worse since he became a starter, and Thomson? Barry? whoever’s the #5 starter is just a big question mark. And not to mention the bullpen (which has actually pitched better, outside of Smoltz, than the rotation has during this recent Braves turnaround). But I still get scared when they have to go in there… I’m definately optimistic about the Braves chances for the WC, but I am definately not declaring it won already! So until I see a friggin’ 8 or 9 inning shutout performance from Hudson I will hold off on putting the Braves in the postseason.

Jimbo’s glass is half empty … they could indeed continue hitting like this, it’s called “wee willy with power, Braves’ style” … but, I agree with his analysis of our needs ‘cause they’ll probably fall in love with Andruw’s mammouth homeruns and revert to that dumb, Earl Weaver baseball.
My Lady, I tried putting my comments into a small space … got pretty good at it too. Unfortunately, this backward site has no font size options!
Grinch, ain’t nothin’ wrong with innocence and gullibility! In my last life, Tsingtao was a favorite … sneaky though. Coach Lou was a good coach and always a hoot but I think he’d endorse two competing products in the same commercial if they’d let him! I pondered the same puzzle about Suds and our Lew … but, give them time, they’re still learning the strike zone.
Suds is a keen observer … notice that he recognized that we have more than one fine lady in our midst … ‘specially that nice young lady that calls Flordia home!
10 Paul, your dissapointment with ESPN is understandable … but just think how they must feel … I imagine the Braves-Padres series was devastating!
Erudite … these North Carolinians are highly educated folk! Scoots referred to me that way the other day and I thought he was calling me a bad name … I looked it up and it’s real nice!
Jimmy, you know that I like BBQ, good Brunswick stew … and a little burned garlic bread too! Me thinks that Chipper’s decided to be the hoss that we’re gonna ride all the to the playoffs!

If the bats can stay even mildly hot, the Braves will continue to reel in the wins; however, we DO need to make a significant trade, primarily with the bullpen.
My only other concern is with the leadoff role. Giles is a good 2b, but I feel that with a GREATER bat out there [i.e. Soriano], the rest of the lineup will benefit.

The fact that Smoltz is campaigning publicly for someone who represents everything that is wrong with politics and partisanship in this country makes me question my support for him. For John Smoltz to be associated with such a weasel is quite upsetting.
I love the Braves but I will find it very hard to root for Smoltz on the days he pitches.
My wish would be for the Braves to move him back to the bullpen and then to trade him and for Smoltz to leave Atlanta angry.

DOB Was interested to see if you caught wind of Skip Carey’s comments about the Tuesday starter? He mentioned bringing up one of the guys from AAA then said Unless of course a deal of some sort gets done to bring Dontrell Willis in which would then make him the probable starter.
Sometimes his jokes are hard to pick up on but he also has been known to give info he may not be supposed to give.. example all stars and the boat story. Anyway Could there be anything to this? probably not jsut thought it was worth mentioning

…And why in the name of all that is holy are the Braves rushing to throw Hudson back onto the mound with short rest??? Are they serious? Why not give Barry a start, something…

I was visiting a friend this weekend who had had a seizure the night before. He received an automated phone call from John Smoltz. I thought he was going to have another seizure when he hung up. It was Smoltz asking for my friend to vote for Ralph Reed for Lt. Governor of GA.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RalphE.Reed,_Jr.
Ralph Reed represents everything that is wrong with this country. My brain hurts just thinking of all the shady schemes the weasel has been involved with.
For John Smoltz to be associated with this guy is very upsetting. I hope he is moved to the bull pen and is then traded and leaves Atlanta angry and upset. I can no longer root for Smoltz when he pitches.
Glavine and Maddux wouldn’t have pulled this crap!

Grinch, most everybody who’s anybody knows where Swainsboro is! Some time back, I was dubbed “Lewis Junior” by the esteemed Dr. Charles Goodwin … don’t know why Charlie ever paid me that honor ‘cause Lewis was himself a Junior and I sure don’t have any telling photos or anything like that on him. Maybe it’s his way of giving me a hard time since I went to Tech and have often said that when I die, I’ll get to go back to Grant Field, if I’ve been good … regardless, an honor it was and and an honor it will always be!
I can’t believe it’s been over 10 years since his passing. “Don’t forget to call your mama, I wish I could call mine” … wonderful words of wisdom … we miss you too Lewis.

Hudson’s last good start came June 10th. There after the team has given up no fewer than 4 runs in his starts. In the last 5 starts, no fewer than 6 runs have been given up by the Braves when he’s pitching. In order for the Braves to win the game in his last two starts, they had to average 11.5 runs a game. Hudson is NOT performing like an Ace. To me, Hudson is the new Ortiz.
As much as the hitting has hinged on Chipper getting hot, the Starting Pitching is going to hing on Hudson getting hot. The Bullpen on a trade.

In the first inning of Hudson’s last start, he was getting the ball down where it should be and the umpire wasn’t giving it to him. He had to bring the ball up and was subsequently hammered. His ball really does have good movement, but that stuff is hittable when it is up in the zone (or so the announcers say). Maybe he gets a better ump on Tues and throws that 8 or 9 innings of shut out ball you guys are hoping for.

Thank you, Bob!
hk, another interesting graph. That may be why I’ve never really taken to Chip. I don’t dislike him but I’d much rather hear my 4 “old friends” call the game.

Grinch, I’m upset … AJC just ate my post!
I ain’t gonna try to recreate it in detail, but I do want you to know that almost everybody who’s anybody knows where Swainsboro is … you can jog to Twin City from Swainsboro, easy! You can, I can’t!
I can’t believe it’s been more than 10 years since Lewis Grizzard’s passing! The esteemed Dr. Charles Goodwin once dubbed me “Lewis Grizzard Junior” … certainly a much appreciated honor but I don’t know why Charlie did that ‘cause Lewis was himself a Junior and I don’t have any telling photos or anything like that to hold over his head.
My guess is it’s because I’ve often said to him that when I die, I’ll get to go back to Grant Field … if I’ve been good! Lewis felt the same way about that stadium in Athens but I’ve been brought up to believe that you only go there if you’ve been bad.
Regardless of the reason, I know that Charlie is a man of wisdom … and I bow to that wisdom … an honor it was and an honor it shall always be … Lewis was a funny man!
Real smart too, there’s a lot of wisdom in his wit … “Don’t forget to call your Mama, I wish I could call mine” … we miss you Lewis!
I understand that Kings ships BBQ just about anywhere in the south … wonder if that includes southern China?

now, barbecue. this journalist has the good fortune to have as a personal friend, a state champion in barbecue competitions. more than one state. now, that pig jig … no, flbravesgirl jimmy smith has not attended (but jimmy smith knows what goes on there) and regrets missing the experience. there once was a place on glenwood road called lefty’s that was a favorite of jimmy smith. old hickory house, too. harold’s over by the federal pen makes some tasty bbq and you can get cracklin’ cornbread. today, there are many choices - but jimmy smith favors his good friend’s barbecue. when attending a social function at his home jimmy smith and baby seal are amazed at all the cookers around the house. apple wood is a favorite source of heat - and there are other secrets that must not be told. jimmy smith is certain jimmy smith could get bob to eat and like the pork platter with stew, macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, and texas toast. now, carolina lady … it would not be said if it was not true. accept these nice compliments and know that they are deserved. now, bob in a bathtub … journalist would rather not think about this. jimmy smith is a little concerned that bob was thinking about jimmy smith’s posts while in the tub. mrs. bob will probably not let him exit the tub and walk to the computer again while wet. now, the observation from penn …yes, chipper is running hard! it is so good to see. maybe this is the chipper we will see for a long time. let us hope. now, time for the new blog.

Howdy, All! PENN, I’m TarHeel born and bred! Spent a lot of time at Douglas Int’l Airport!
Grinch, sorry, I misread what you wrote. Whew!
MGL’s link re: Devine: “Devine also mixed in his developing change-up and worked on perfecting new footwork. He is now landing on his toe whereas before he landed on his heel.” sigh….here we go again…..
Sam, I can vouch for Kings BBQ! I’m about 40 miles away, but whenever I’m in the area I make it a point to stop in. Are you in that area?
TnPaul, I gave up on ESPN a long time ago. I cannot abide their one-sidedness (is that a real word??) and almost open hostility towards the Braves and a couple of other teams. I don’t even bother going there now. You write some great posts; always enjoy reading them!

TnPaul, I gave up on ESPN a looong time ago. Got so I just couldn’t abide their one-sidedness (is that a real word??) and barely concealed hostility towards the Braves and several other teams. I don’t even go by there anymore. Whatever happened to corporate ethics and honest reporting??
