New suitors worth getting excited about?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Two new prospective buyers of the Braves have emerged, and while neither has the name recognition of Arthur Blank, both are local. What do you think about the two parites — radio-magnate Lew Dickey Jr. and Ron Terwillinger’s investment group? Would you be pleased if either ended up buying the team, or are you holding out for Blank to make another run?

Well, it really doesn’t matter if I hold out or not.

I’ll get excited if they commit to a payroll that will enable us to succeed. Same thing with Blank. If they are going to come in and slash payroll every year, they would be no different than Time Warner.

Rather see a sole purchaser instead of a group. Groups have done wonders for the Reds, Diamondbacks, Expos, etc.

For those who hope that payroll will be increased without the Time Warner Corporate parent, just remember that once the Braves are spun out, TBS will no longer be able to subsidize the team’s payroll. In all likelihood, payroll will decrease in any scenario. Unless the fans of Atlanta actually start supporting the team through increased attendance, I would expect the payroll to be consistent with other mid-market teams.

Please GOD let the Dickey’s win!!!!!!!!
The Dickey Family is a lot like Ted Turner was when he bought the Braves. They are relatively young, certainly aggressive, and are determined to win. They took over 680 the fan when it was the least listened to station in the South and have made it a force. They currently broadcast the Thrashers and do an excellent job, as well as the Auburn Football games which they do equally well with. None of us has a real idea about who has what money, and is that money available, but if they have the Money, then the Dickey Family will keep the Braves a winner, count on it.

Put them on eBay and start the bidding at like six bucks.

Is it too much to hope for local owners who love and respect the game? I gotta tell ya, a group of real estate beancounters based in Colorado will not represent an improvement. C’mon Ted! Where are you baby??!!??

dave: LOL! And just be sure you have an ebay “alter-ego” so that you can “bid up” the selling price throughout the auction. hehehe!

An investment group? That doesnt sound good to me. Their bottom line will be profit and I cant see them raising the payroll. Unless they feel that an increased payroll will increase attendence enough to cause greater profits they wont raise the payroll. I’d haveta vote for the other investor then.

“TBS will no longer be able to subsidize the team’s payroll” TV broadcasting is signed through several more years. The sale of the team isn’t going to affect current contracts. It probably won’t affect future contracts in as much, some local sports chanel will desire to broadcast the games. The team will still recieve money from that. Other than that, the statement makes little to no sense.
Baseball books are closed to the public, so no one really knows how much a team truely makes or doesn’t. The Braves are run by a corporation, they are more than likely breaking even or making money as is, which would lead to keeping the payroll the same, or upping it a bit, with a new owner.By Glennbo

a media magnate based in atlanta sounds like the best thing if blank or kasten don’t make it. whoever buys the braves, they need to keep bobby and js in th fold at some capacity.

But the Red Sox and Spanks are owned by groups too, led by John Henry and Steinbrenner respectively (or disrespectively depending on you look at it :) ). And they’ve done ok. If they can be owned by a person or persons who takes pride in winning they should be in good shape.

It is my understanding that TBS pays $50 M annually to MLB for the rights to broadcast the Braves games. The Braves get zilch since they were a part of the TBS group. In my opinion, that contract would have to be redone if the team is sold. In fact, any new owner will probably look for ways to renegotiate all of the broadcast contracts.

The Braves get a large portion from the TV revenue. The fact that they are part of the parent company doesn’t affect their status.

Uhh….Ted bought the team in 76. It was a LONG time before ted figured things out. We don’t need that.

Who buys the Braves is not as big a concern is why they are buying them. If they want to continue to put a championship team on the field and are willing to sign free agents once in awhile then ok. If they are going to cut back and try to let John and Bobby do it on less then no. It can’t be done.
We need a owner who cares and wants the WS Ring. Right now I think our owners could care less about winning at all. It would be nice to keep our own players once in awhile and to be able to bid on free agents who are needed. Actually getting one a time or two would be nice too. But to just open the checkbook, we don’t need that either. A Steinbrenner we don’t want in Atlanta.

It is not our job as fans to get excited about new owners for the Braves, rather the new owners responsibility to get us excited about their ownership of the Braves.

Hey Braves Fans! All I gotta say is we need more than the luck of the Irish to win the big one. I am sick of getting so close each year to have to pack it in early. Whoever buys the Braves, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE buy some good relief pitching. Spend some money for Pete’s sake and let’s win another World Championship!

The ideal new Braves’ owner will 1—Love baseball 2—Have a World Series win as his main goal 3—Have nearly unlimited financial resources 4—Be an Atlanta resident or at least have a commitment to the well-being of the city and to residence during the season. 5—Be willing to support the GM and MGR by giving them what they feel they need toward item #2. 6—Conduct himself/herself within the laws and the standards of polite society. 7—Refrain from meddling with the people who know baseball, no matter how tempted.
There now—is that so much to ask? (Actually, maybe so.)

Bring Arthur to the rescue. I am impressed the way he has turned Falcons around. Common Arthur help us.

It’s a bottom line business where a lot of gray suits are brought in and then, within two years, these guys suddenly know everything about baseball. - Don Drysdale

A. Blank has said the Braves are over priced at 400 million, and he’s by far a better business man than I. I don’t think he’ll buy, but I wish Stan Kastan could or would. Where is Earl Mann, the owner of the old Atlanta Crackers, when you need him?

I know Mr. Terwilliger personally, and he is a huge sports fan. He played college basketball and is a tremendos athelete, not just another ‘grey suit’. He has always wanted to own a professional sports organization, and is one competitive son of a gun. If he gets this team, you can be sure he will be trying to win a ring, not just make money.
P.S. His name is spelled incorrectly in the write up.

i must admit that i dont know who these guys are. but if they are going to come in and allow the Braves to spend another 10-12 million a year or better then im all for it. time warner has done nothing but harm to the Braves over the last 3-5 years. we’ve had to miss out on alot of key free agents because of them.

ARTHUR BLANK NEEDS TO BUY THE BRAVES. WHAT HE’S DONE FOR THE FALCONS IS PHENOMENAL. SELLING OUT THE GA DOME ALL LAST SEASON, MAN THATS AMAZING. IF WE COULD JUST AVERAGE HALF THE MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF TURNER FIELD EVERY GAME WE’D BE DOING GOOD.
