This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Braves’ expectations are realistic and high

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — It’s as much a part of the ritual as the smack of the mitt and the crack of the bat. If you’re a ballplayer, you come to spring training and say you’re optimistic. Even if you aren’t, you say it because that’s how baseball works.

At 8:15 on the morning of the 2009 Braves’ first pitcher-and-catcher workout, Chipper Jones was asked if he’d have toed the time-honored line and claimed he was looking forward to the new season, even if his club hadn’t landed starting pitchers Derek Lowe and Kenshin Kawakami after so many offseason reversals.

“I probably would have said that,” Jones said.

Would he have meant it?

“Probably not.”

Remember that Bobby Cox is still the manager. Let’s face facts. What did it require for him to win the 14 Divisions? — Three best in the league Ace Pitchers and #4s and 5s who were usually also very good— and even then, he usually just barely won the Division — In short, pitching so far superior to the rest of the League that it made it almost impossible to lose over the 162 game regular season schedule. Do we now have anythig close to that kind of pitcheng — Of course not — And when he was winning, the Division was also usually a lot weaker than now. Although great for keeping a team on an even keel and in good spirits etc, he is one of the worst all time offensive managers.

Whatever Don. 14 division championships in a row. A feat never matched by any other team in baseball (including the bottomless pockets of the New York Yankees) or any other sport for that matter. The respect of every baseball player and manager in baseball. Future Hall of Fame manager. Maybe Cox did only win won WS, but he gave his players a chance every year for 14 years to play in the WS. Guess what, he can’t bat for them. I don’t think he’ll lose any sleep over not having your support, and neither will most Braves fans. Find something a little more realistic to complain about.

Gary is right. How can you call yourself a Braves fan and view Bobby Cox like that. Even when Smoltz was in Atlanta, I viewed and still view Bobby Cox as the heart and SOUL of the Atlanta Braves. He is a legend in Atlanta.
