This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Bradley’s Buzz: The Dark Knight vs. Bobby Knight

Ranking the rants

Reading Entertainment Weekly’s account of Christian Bale’s infamous tirade on the set of “Terminator Salvation” — and then seeking out the tirade itself — I was struck by its similarity to another harangue, this one delivered by Bobby Knight to his Indiana players on the eve of a Purdue game. Given that Knight is campaigning, albeit indirectly, to get Georgia or Alabama or somebody to hire him, a review of his blow-ups seems warranted.

Because these, in the YouTube age, are what any school that hires Knight is going to get — embarrassment via Internet. For an edited sample of Knight’s greatest, er, hits, ESPN thoughtfully compiled a Top 10 with bleeps inserted.

For the unexpurgated versions … well, here are a few. But I must insert the STRONGEST POSSIBLE WARNING: These links contain the harshest language and are not suitable for listening in the workplace.

Here’s the pre-Purdue explosion, and here, for handy side-by-side comparison, is Bale’s diatribe against the director of photography. You’ll note that Bale’s soliloquy lasts nearly four times as long, but for sheer impassioned unhinged-ness even the latest Batman cannot stack up to the darker Knight.

If you’ve gotten this far, you’ve doubtless noticed that there are a slew of Knight “moments” on YouTube. (The chair-throw, for instance.) But for the sake of brevity I’ll link to only two more: Here’s Isiah Thomas listing all the dirty words he learned from Knight — Knight’s reaction, visible in the background, is priceless — and here’s Knight himself on his favorite word.

I’m guessing you can guess the word.

Recruiting rankings re-examined

This useful story, from Scott Kennedy of Scout.com, tracks the past four recruiting classes and how those teams actually fared on the field. You’ll note that Georgia underperformed its ranking, and that Tech outperformed, if only slightly, its. Again, we’d have guessed as much. But it’s still intriguing to see it in black and white.

A short item about hockey

Normally I don’t follow the Canadian junior leagues, but given that the Thrashers figure to be picking high in the June draft I thought I’d get a head start. So I read this rundown of prospects by Allan Muir of SI.com, and I came across this rather amazing line regarding defenseman Ryan Ellis: “His ability to share clothes with Billy Barty is the only thing keeping Ellis from battling Victor Hedman for recognition as the draft’s top blueline prospect.”

I took that to mean Ellis is short. How short is he? Er, 5-foot-10. The late Billy Barty was 3-9. So that comparison would seem a stretch. So to speak.

Not-so-hot Peppers?

Some Falcons fans are hopeful the team will make a run at defensive end Julius Peppers. Don Banks of SI.com offers a dissenting view, calling Peppers the riskiest big name among free agents. And I would whole-heartedly agree. I’ve long considered Peppers the NFL’s most overrated player. (Though I should stipulate that I liked him a lot as a basketball player.)

More NFL draft rankings

This listing comes courtesy of Mike Mayock, who’s an analyst for NFL.com and who famously championed Matt Ryan last year. Mayock has Matthew Stafford rated No. 1 among quarterbacks and Knowshon Moreno No. 2 among running backs. But he has Tech’s Michael Johnson listed as only the fifth-best defensive end available, and he has Georgia’s Dannell Ellerbee the fourth-best inside linebacker. Me, I didn’t think Ellerbe had much of a season.

Trade prospects for your Atlanta Hawks

As I tried to say the other day, the Hawks aren’t apt to do much of anything before the Feb. 19 trade deadline. But here, for purposes of independent corroboration, is Chris Mannix of SI.com suggesting the exact same thing.

And it’s worth noting that, with Phoenix apparently looking to deal Shaquille O’Neal and Amare Stoudemire, Atlanta isn’t seen as a possible destination for either. So writes Chad Ford of ESPN.com.

Those rankings are hardly what you want to point to, Mark, if you want to say that GT has “outperformed”. Slightly better as far as winning percentage but worse in AP ranking. I know AP rankings are meaningless to 99% of the people out there but it was included in comparison.

Maybe thats what Georgia needs a coach with some FIRE in his belly.

I played for a coachlike that in Jr high. When I think of all the paddlings we got and verbal abuse. Well todays kids who have been babied wouldnt be able to handle it. Today they all get a trophy no matter who wins.

Ill say it again. Knight doesnt cheat, graduates his players 99% of which love the man, and wins. Why on earth would UGA want that?

Instead we wil lget some coach with modest success at Soda Pop U who cant win on the big stage. But I guess he will be nice to the players and pat them on the back when they lose by 20 points. That seems to be the objective.

Mark, I’ve seen people opine that the Hawks should trade Bibby while they can receive some assets in return, rather than letting him walk for nothing (save an expiring contract) at the end of the season. I know you don’t think the Hawks will make such a move, but do you believe they should?

And while I would have Michael Johnson ranked higher based on my own observations and biases (only other DE on the list I’ve seen in person was Tyson Jackson from LSU, and he only had 2 tackles against GT in the Peach Bowl), I wouldn’t mind his stock falling a bit if it meant the Falcons would have a chance to draft him. He’s a high-energy player, a smart guy and a good person. He also eats opposing QBs for breakfast, although playing across from Derrick Morgan may have helped him, as they both ended up with 7 sacks in 2008. At 6’7” and 250, I’d really like to see Johnson opposite Abe on the D-line. Last GT defensive standout drafted by the Birds worked out pretty well, to the tune of 5 Pro Bowls.

I wouldn’t trade Bibby. I’d make every attempt to re-sign him. And I believe the Hawks will.

Then again, I thought they’d keep Josh Childress.

By Tron5000

February 9, 2009 11:13 AM | Link to this

Re-signing Bibby would give the Hawks 3 players making over $10 mil a year (I’m assuming Bibby would get a contract in that range). Can the Hawks really afford to do that, as Marvin’s contract is nearing its end and the Hawks will likely look to re-up him? Zaza’s $4 mil comes off the books at the end of the season, but they’ll need to fill that hole, and Speedy is chomping up another $5.2 mil next season.

Also, Joe’s contract is up after next season, and I can’t imagine the Hawks would allow him to get away. Not after 3 straight All-Star appearances. He’s still young enough to play at a very high level for years. I like Bibby a lot, but I’m just worried that there won’t be enough money for him and for the Hawks’ need to add frontcourt help for Al and to re-sign their other players.

Mark, Two things we have learned during the last year.

  • Sportswriters do not have a clue when making preseason prediction for college football.
  • 2.Recruiting services do not have a clue what an 18 year old kid will do for the next four years of his life. They are usually right about 25% of the time.A one-eyed grandma in a rocking chair can pick the top 25 players in the country. After that it is like Forrest Gump and a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get.

One more thing. With UGA having a winning percentage of 77 in the SEC, competing with LSU and Fla, is a heckuva lot better than a 61% and playing in the ACC.

Why single out sportswriters? Why not include the coaches who have poll votes? They had Georgia No. 1 in 2008, too. (And Southern Cal No. 1 in 2007.)

Not that I’m touchy on this subject, mind you. Just because I picked Georgia to win the national championship about 37 times.

I think murfdawg is still peeved at the sportswriters for getting his hopes up for the ‘07Mutts. It’s not the writers’ fault that UGA vastly underperformed, by anyone’s standard.

And my roommate still has the SI Preseason #1 cover displayed in the pool room. Sometimes, you just gotta let go. But at least it’s not framed, and he didn’t stand in line for 4 hours to have Stafford autograph it (as many people did).

I guess I’m not really one to talk. I do have an autographed Joey Harrington football. But I didn’t wait in line or pay money for it, so I think that’s OK.

I hope that Bama or Georgia does not hire Bobby Knight, he is real good at covering basketball games for ESPN. He is a colorful coach whose best days are long past and needs to stay retired!! With Marvin Williams becoming a restricted free agent and Bibby an unrestricted FA along with Zaza, and also with the Hawks losing so much money over the past few years, we may see a huge salary dump with this team come the summer.

If Acie Law is the PG of the future then package a deal with another team when it comes to Bibby and re-sign the rest.

GM Rick Sund will have to make some very tough choices, and may need to pull some sign-and-trade deals in order to maintain flexibility to re-sign Joe Johnson come summer of 2010.

Nobody is going to hire an old white man with all that history. Mid- Major would hire him. He is too uppity to take that demotion. You have to go out and hire an coaching staff that can teach and motivate . Like Bama - Georgia is going to have to be completely torn apart and rebuilt from the ground up.

    By Tron5000

    February 9, 2009 1:27 PM | Link to this

Mark, I think this team has made too many strides to regress with a salary dump. Re-signing Joe after the 09-10 season should be top priority, with securing Horford long-term coming in second. I’m not sure how Marvin fits into this team’s plans for the future, but I would think that his play this season has earned him a raise from his around-$5 mil-per-year current deal. The Hawks have the right to match any offer made for him after this season, but will they?

This will certainly be an interesting few months.

    By Mark Bradley

    February 9, 2009 1:39 PM | Link to this

I’m guessing Marvin Williams is going to want between $8 and $10 million a year. I’m guessing the bidding for Bibby starts at $13 million per season.

Tron, you’re right. The days of the Hawks doing things on the cheap have come to an end. At issue now is whether ownership has the wherewithal — and the willpower — to stay competitive. And the Josh Childress example throws a huge question mark into the mix.

    By Tron5000

    February 9, 2009 2:26 PM | Link to this

While I questioned the Hawks when they let Josh slip away to Greece, they replaced him with Flip and Mo, who are averaging a combined 17.5 points, 5.2 boards and 2.5 assists. And they only cost $4 mil combined, which is less than they would’ve paid J Chill. I’m pleased with the results thus far.

I don’t see how the Hawks can afford to re-up Joe, pay Josh his $10+ mil, re-sign Bibby at $12-15, match an offer for Marvin and extend Big Al in 2 years. It’s a starting 5 that I love to see, but I can’t imagine the Hawks will be able to get it all done under the cap. Someone, I would think, has to go.

Nice selection of topics across a broad spectrum — with nice continuity and flow.

Am I the only one who viewed Isiah’s (old) press conference link and thought…hmmmm, maybe the Knicks should’ve watched that video before they named him head coach? Anyone using a word in a press conference rhyming with punt is due for a sexual harassment lawsuit sooner or later…most likely sooner.

What a jerk Christian Bale sounded like. That said, there are probably some Willie Martinez critics who would prefer Bale over Martinez because he has the “fire.” (Me, I’m more a fan of the Tony Dungy approach. If you have to yell, you’ve lost your audience already).

Re: Hawks. The ASG has endured undue criticism about their implied penny pinching for years. The AJC article discussing their losses ought to silence the critics, if the critics based their criticism on fact rather than imagination. I’ll state my opinion once more. If you don’t like the way the ASG is running the Hawks and you’re “demanding they sell!!!!” — make them an offer. Otherwise sit down.

Tron 5000, My expectations for UGA in 2008, were 10-3. Looking a a young o line, that got younger, key losses on the d line, and yes I thought the schedule was very tough, I thought we would be fortunate to win 9 games. Playing USC,LSU AND BAMA back to back to back, I thought there would be one loss there.(of course I didn’t figure it would be debacle). Going on the road to LSU and Jax, I thought we would be lucky to get a split. Auburn plays us tough and GT is capable of finding an acorn. So you see, I thought we would lose 3. I never thought we were #1, never thought we would end up #1. The only thing I thought was how clueless the sportswriters were to pick Georgia #1. I have had season tickets since 1972 and have seen #1 teams(in red and black and other colors) and the 08 team did not have it. Call me in August, and I will give you my prediction for the Dawgs in 09.

I am not a Bulldog alum and so I don’t really have a dog in the hunt (sorry couldn’t help it), but I agree 100% on the opinion that not obtaining the services of the Dark Knight for the coaching vacancy in Athens is the best thing to do. Besides the fact that he failed to “coach up” (or “recruit up”) Texas Tech so they could succeed against competent opponents, he is a lousy human being. Let’s not forget this is the guy who told Connie Chung that a rape victim, if the rape is inevitable, “ought to just lay back and enjoy it” or words to that effect. It appears Mr. Evans doesn’t want anything to do with him. Smart non-move.

And the thought of Speedy Claxton taking up ANOTHER five million next year, and losing Bibby because of it, makes me weep just a little bit inside.

Scott The fact that anybody can come on here and accuse somebody of anything is disgusting. A coward would do no less than wrongly accuse, or twist the facts to their liking. It amazes me how the media who are the biggest cowards continue to rip one of the finest basketball coaches in the history of college basketball. Scott, the fact that you say Texas Tech basketball was not coached up is ABSURD. Texas Tech’s basketball play was more competitive the very first year that Coach Knight started. No, he didn’t win any championships, but he did lift that program in a positive way. He basically put a non basketball school on the map, but I guess you can argue with anyone behind that computer. Calling a person a lousy human being, especially one who has the accolades to prove his merit, is just ABSURD. Hey, your a bulldog fan, nobody should expect any better!

Why does Mark Bradley hate Bob Knight so much? For as long as I’ve read his drivel in the AJC, if the topic of Bob Knight ever comes up, you can count on Mark Bradley to write some snide or slanted remarked intended to disparage Mr. Knight. The fact is, Georgia needs to generate some interest in its moribund mens’ basketball program, and Bob Knight could easily get Georgia back on the map as a relevant basketball progam.

    By No Axe to Grind

    February 9, 2009 5:33 PM | Link to this

Concerning Knight, I have no opinion on UGA or any other program hiring him. I do, however, have one question. Bradley, do you or anyone else out there think Knight would tolerate incompetent assistant coaches like Richt does? How long do you think Martinez would be hanging around Coach Knight?

One other thing, do you think Bobby Knight would have many discipline problems?

    By Bill

    February 9, 2009 5:40 PM | Link to this

I don’t know Knight, didn’t play for him, so I’m just basing this on what I’ve read. I’ve seen people talk about his temper and his off-the-court judgement.

But this statement: “Oh, and just because a guy is a great coach doesn’t preclude him from being a lousy human being” isn’t clear to me. I guess you’re saying - without saying it in a straightforward way - that Knight is a lousy human being. (It’s hard to tell what someone is saying when they sort of dance around and don’t talk or write in a direct way).

I haven’t seen anything to back up the “lousy human being” thing. In fact, even most critics think he’s a pretty good - but flawed human being. And almost everyone thinks he’s one helluva coach.

No, your absolutely right Mr. Bradley. Professional media types like yourself should use much more discernment when judging a person’s character. You call out a person with out the full knowledge of knowing that person, and justify your findings by hear say at best! It’s simply absurd how you people get on the bandwagon with your media buddies and decide to crucify someone. The fact that you may not like someone should not come into play, your a journalist, just report the facts, not some impartial, he said, she said bull sh#$. But hey, it’s much too easy perpetuate the negatives than to report on the positives… I hope your not going to tell me that there are no positives when it comes to Bobby Knight. Good Grief , this would be funny if it wasn’t so absurd!

    Bottom Line,

Bobby Knight has a past, you know it, I know it, we all know it. But look at it from an objective point of view. Every player that’s play on all of his teams has graduated, he’s never had any discipline problems with his players and the man can win games. When it’s all said and done, isn’t that what UGA, or any university for that matter, is looking for in a coach.

Love the comment above about rebuilding UGA’s BB program from the ground up! How many times do we have to restart the ground up process? Seems each time we start a little deeper in the ground.

Then I read it through and almost fell out of my chair laughing. 2-Peppers IS over rated, seldom shows up in big games. 3- I tend to agree about Ellerbee, except keep this in mind- average to good middle linebackers look a lot better (or worse) depending on whether or not they have interior linemen who can keep linemen off them. The dogs line play this year, well, nuff said. Ellerbee has the tools. The question is,does he have what it takes inside for a good NFL career. e.g. Jesse Tuggle vs. a certain former Dawg drafted by the Bungles. There are some things a stop watch just won’t tell you. 4- If the Spirit does not keep the core of this team together, well, anybody who buys a ticket after that needs their a head xray. 5- these new blogs you are doing, outstanding.

As a Panthers fan, I agree you’re 100% right—-he is way overrated. He only shows up to play about half the time. For most of the 2007 season he was invisible. In 2008, he went all out maybe 50% of the time. I do think he has been smart enough to keep his sack stats up for trade reason (but they are deceiving—most of the sacks were against weaker teams); but I for one, am glad to see him go.

Got us Feltuckton. I hope every day to wake up and read where Adams got caught with a sheep and Evans was holding the camcorder and Dooley is back in charge as AD and anybody else as prez. Screw Adams, screw Evans (quota hire if there has EVER been one) and get out there and get Bobby Knight and watch the basketball team improve and the stands fill you blubbering idiots. then smack Bradley upside the head. Terence of all people gets on ESPN for being an idiot so you should get an Oscar.
