This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Bradley’s Buzz: The Braves, the NFL draft and … Junior Samples?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The future is … not now, but soon
Pitchers and catchers report to Lake Buena Vista on Valentine’s Day, and the young Braves pitcher to watch, according to Keith Law of Scouts Inc., is Tommy Hanson. Law rates Hanson the ninth-best prospect in all of baseball, which beats the heck out of being rated the 109th-best. But that doesn’t make Hanson the hottest guy in his own organization.
That would be outfielder Jason Heyward, whom Law considers the No. 3 prospect overall and the best up-and-coming corner outfielder. Writing for Baseball America, Bill Ballew regards Heyward as the Braves’ No. 2 prospect behind Hanson, but it’s noteworthy that, in the print edition of Baseball America, Heyward is now projected as the Braves’ starting right fielder in 2012, a year in which Jeff Francoeur turns the ripe old age of 28.
And what, you’re asking, happened to the heralded Jordan Schafer? He doesn’t crack Law’s list of the top 25 prospects — he shows up at No. 8 among all minor-league center fielders — and he has been downgraded to No. 3 among Braves on Ballew’s list. (Schafer was No. 1 a year ago.)
But that demotion might be due to the Braves’ strength as a farm system. Law rates Atlanta the fourth-best organization in the majors, which beats the heck out of being the 24th-best. He also gives high marks to scouting director Roy Clark, who obviously knows a lot about farms having sat out in the cornfield with Buck Owens on “Hee Haw” all those years.
Yes, yes. That was a different Roy Clark. I just made a dumb joke. I consider myself a latter-day Junior Samples. And did you know Mr. Samples was born and is buried in Cumming? I didn’t until I Googled his bio.
Speaking of which … here’s my favorite Junior Samples joke, arising from the aforementioned cornfield.
“Hee Haw” choruses: “Hey, Junior! What’s a grudge?”
Junior: “That’s somethin’ my pa keeps his car in.”
Back to sports, and more mock drafts!
A frequent contributor to the Buzz festivities, Don Banks of SI.com projects Matthew Stafford as the No. 3 pick in the April draft. Banks also guesses the Falcons will take Peria Jerry, a defensive tackle from Ole Miss, in Round 1, and that Knowshon Moreno will still be available when the Falcons exercise the draft’s 24th pick. Which isn’t, I feel sure, what Moreno had in mind.
And what, you’re asking, about the Junior Samples of ESPN — Mel Kiper Jr.? Well, ol’ Mel has Stafford going No. 1 and Moreno going 16th, and I don’t know what he foresees the Falcons doing because the Worldwide Leader only offers the first half of Kiper’s mock for free. And I bear an inherent garage — er, grudge — against any site that makes you pay.
Checking out Mel’s Big Board — no charge! — you’ll note that Stafford is rated the fourth-best overall prospect. Moreno is No. 15, and Jerry is 23rd.
This just in! Waddell on the hot seat!
In his second-half NHL predictions, Allan Muir of SI.com opines that the Thrashers will fire general manager Don Waddell. Me, I believe the NHL will fold before the Teflon Don gets dislodged. The man mightn’t be the keenest judge of talent, but he’s world-class at keeping his job.
Midterm exams for your Atlanta Hawks
On FoxSports.com, Charley Rosen awards the local NBA team a B for its first-half work but suggests it “still can’t play with the big boys.” On SI.com, former colleague Steve Aschburner gives the Hawks a B-plus, and in a roundtable discussion he calls the Hawks the team most likely to do as the Arizona Cardinals have done in the playoffs. Which would seem to mean that Aschburner believes the Hawks can indeed play with the big boys.
Come to think of it, Josh Smith does bear a slight resemblance to Larry Fitzgerald. Minus the hair.
Back to the Braves
In an essay that also runs in this week’s print Sports Illustrated, Phil Taylor of SI.com laments the Braves’ signing of Derek Lowe as a signal that the old-school franchise has lost its old-school charm.
Gee, and those of us around here figured it all went to pot when John Schuerholz handed $4 million to Ample Albie Lopez.

There’s gonna need to be someone else in right between 2010 and 2012 if Francouer doesn’t pick it up a tad. Here’s hoping he will.
Perry sounds a little dubious to me as our first pick; most of the scouts had him as a 2-4 round projection before the senior bowl, and having two tackles under 300 pounds (if he starts next to Babineau) doesn’t seem like a good idea to me. But then, I’m no Dimitroff.
If the Hawks are gonna do like Arizona did in the playoffs, they’re gonna need to hire a better coach mid season. Can you picture Woodson during the half of a game 7? “Well boys, we’re leading by 12 at the half, you’ve earned your rest now and can coast. We should only lose by 8 and that’s at least a marginal improvement over last year.”

hey mark, just to let you know, kiper has the falcons taking larry english with the 24th pick in the draft. Kinda surprising if you ask me. He’s a pass rushing de/olb hybrid type guy from northern illinois who probably only weighs about 250 at a height of 6’4. For some reason they project him as a 3-4 olb but they have him going to the falcons who run a 4-3 (maybe a sign of things to come?). Either way, the kid looks like a monster in his film so i wouldnt be upset if he came here.

Gee, I hope Kiper is wrong about the Falcons pick then, because we don’t need another undersized defensive pass rusher…. Jam Anderson hasn’t exactly panned out.

Sign Dunn for two years and get on with ST already. :) They cannot ride one year band aids until Heyward is ready.
Plus they may need Dunn longer b/c Schafer does not project to be a HR hitter and it is likely as not that Heyward replaces JF.
If Dunn can be had for 2yrs (3rd yr option) for 7-10mm/yr do it.
At a min Dunn will give you 40+ HR/100+ RBIs and give pitchers fits when he is batting between Chipper and McCann.
Come on Wren don’t take your foot off the gas now; you cannot wait until July to fix this weak hitting OF.
JF may turn out to be a bust in 09 can you really risk it?

Thanks, Stephen. But are you looking at Mel’s mock draft or Mel’s big board? (There’s a difference, as you can see from his placement of Stafford — No. 1 on the former, No. 4 on the latter.)

all the ‘experts’ usually have their mock draft wrong anyway, alot last year had broem ranked as the top qb, and dorsey as atl so called pick, glad that didn’t happen, hopefully dimitroff can get someone via free agency, as long as the draft is mostly defense, justin keller would be nice in the 2nd or so, for the te need. brookings is close to done, lofton is a great pick, but cushing and clay matthews jr look great on you tube also. waddell should’ve already been gone

Braves need to sign Dunn, Jones, And Jr. Let the young guys have one more year of the minors. or move Dunn to 1st use Jr as a forth or fifth outfielder slash pinch hitter and let one of the young guys have left field. Jones will help out in centerfield defensivly and his bat will come around. Let Hanson be your 4th or 5th starter. Plus if Jr can can play 100 games the fans and hit some bombs it will be a better offense outfield than last year.

If I were Matthew Stafford and I was going to be the #1 pick and have to play for the Detroit Lions, I’d pull a John Elway and flat tell the Lions that I was not coming there under any circumstances. That team is a loser, always been a looser in the past 35 years and will continue to lose. Ownership does not care if it wins or not. Stafford will be lead the league in INT’s and sacks. He will perform badly. His pro career will be like Archie Manning whose career was nothing because he played with the very, very lowly Saints. If Archie had been with a good them, he would have been a first ballot hall of famer. Stafford has a bright future with proper handling. But, God help him if he goes to the crummy Lions. He’d be better off going to KC which will build back. That team wants to win again. So, Matthew, tell the Lions you are not coming there. It would be best for his future.

Who cares what Kiper or anyone guesses? I trust Dimitroff to get what we need.
I’d rather have Abreu than Dunn. Dunn is a strikeout machine and a defensive liability.
Hawks flaws are still a product of youth, not coaching. They don’t quite have the maturity and experience to put teams away effectively, or whatever. Maybe a year away from championship-caliber, but they’re certainly better off this year than last.

Mark, while drafting a DT in a projected draft maybe a smart move, I believe Falcons should go LB at 24 with Brian Cushing from USC. Time to “let Keith Brooking” move on and plug in Cushing to form up a potent duo at LB with Curtis Lofton (in the middle).
Falcons can bring back big Grady and have a healthy Trey Lewis at DT for 09, maybe even go after big John Henderson in the FA market?

Does anyone seriously think that a bigtime prospect like Heyward is going to need 4 years in the minors??? If he has a big year in 2009 and follows that up with a big 2010, I suspect he may be up in 2010. He will start out in High A this year, then I bet he goes to AA if he does really well. Then in 2010 he will be in AA no matter what and if he does very well, he could either be in AAA for a pot of coffee then come up to the Braves. Come on: Even if Francoeur comes back, and that is a very qualified come back since he couldn’t hit very well in the first place (look at the strikeout/walk ratio, low OPS, etc.—horrible!), then it’s only a matter of time before Heyward replaces him. The Braves have a big hole in RF and Heyward is the man to fill that spot. It will not take until 2012 to see him.

As for Heyward and 2012 … that wasn’t necessarily Baseball America’s view of his arrival date. In fact, the printed magazine suggests he could “make his major-league debut in 2010.” Heyward was simply listed as the starting right fielder in the Braves’ 2012 lineup.

For a good mock draft check out www.walterfootball.com/draft2009.php. These folks have the Falcons drafting Brandon Pettigrew, which would be a great pick up. Plus, they do a great job of mocking Emmitt Smith’s mangling of the English language on ESPN. Seriously, how does this guy work on TV? I am in no way affiliated with the Web site.

Charley Rosen is a moron. The Celtics and Cavs have the same record, but the C’s get a C- and the Cavs get an A. The Hawks supposedly can’t play with the big boys even though nearly every time they have played a so-called “big boy” this season they have either taken them to the wire or won outright. Let’s not forget this is the same guy who thought LeBron James would be at best an average NBA player.

I keep forgetting about Trey Lewis. If he comes back as effective as he was starting to be before the injury that could be a good thing. I hope a move to the inside benefits Anderson; I’d like to see him succeed in some capacity. He seems like a good enough guy and he’s also taking up cap room; maybe Beaudreau can bulk him up and work some magic.
TURTSNAP, Abraham and Biermann are both undersized at around 260 and 245 respectively and they’re our best two pass rushers. Anderson and Davis weigh 285 and 275. My guess is that if English is a “monster” on film at 250 they’ll find a good place for him. It’s the motor and talent that’s important. Look at Robert Gallery.

Onto baseball … have the Braves expressed any interest in Bobby Abreu? His career .300 batting average and .903 OBP/plus slugging would make an excellent fit in the middle of the Braves lineup. He may affordable considering he is still a free agent. He would make a good stopgap until one of the young studs are ready to be called up.

Junior Samples, Mark? What happened to that reporter who used to turn phrases like “185 lbs. of whipcord and steel” and used to fancy himself as a modern day Grantland Rice?
We don’t need a latter day Junior Samples, Mark. At the risk of damning him with the very faintest of praise, we have Jeff Foxworthy* to fill that niche.
Still, you get points for versatility; paying homage to Junior Samples, and yet using him to mock Mel Kiper Jr. all at the same time.
Of course mocking a mock draft guru runs the risk of making a mockery of the word mock, but that’s a risk you have to take when linking Junior Samples and Mel Kiper Jr.
Speaking of “abject dread,” I must say I’m not looking forward to your commentary on the Mosley-Margarito fight.
After the controversy with Margarito’s gloves, and the Samples’ commentary of today, I shudder to think of what you might do with a Paris Hilton/plaster of Paris play on words; it might be as brutal as the fight itself.

Hey, Mr. Bradley. You stole my “Hee Haw” joke. lol - I made the comment in the BravesBlog, last week, that Roy Clark was “a pickin’” and the Braves were “a grinnin’”.
Anyhoo, it doesn’t surprise me that Jordan Schafer has dropped in the various minor league prospect rankings. Even taking into consideration his 50 game suspension, his numbers at AA Mississippi, last season, were less than stellar. This will be a pivotal season for him, I believe.

I didn’t google it LOL; but I’m pretty sure it was you. You have a penchent of “just maybe” columns that go against conventional wisdom.
It was a column you, or at least I think it was you, wrote about Sugar Ray Leonard taking on Mike Tyson. You suggested Tyson agree to a catch weight of no more than 200 lbs. and made a case that Leonard, at 185 lbs. could give him a run for his money.
I think this was at a time that Tyson was making a making a mockery-there’s that word again-of the heavyweight division, so it must have been after Berbick and before Buster Douglas.
Ring a bell?
I’m still going to advocate when sprinkling the narrative with cultural/historical references, aim a little higher than Junior Samples and trust the reading audience to keep up. Think Mel Kiper as the Kim Jong-il of mock drafts (similar pompadour, both delusional concerning their omnipotence.)

I really don’t get why anyone would even mention 2012 for Heyward. It doesn’t make sense to me. The Braves obviously have a huge need in RF so why not bring him up early? Guys who can hit have nothing to prove in the minors. Let’s just see what he does in 2009 and 2010. If he meets all expectations then there wouldn’t be any reason to let him languish in the minors.
I don’t have a crystal ball so I don’t know what’s going to happen any more than anyone else, but if Francoeur can get a starting job after only getting to AA with his poor minor league stats, and for Brian McCann to get just a cup of coffee in AA then gets the starting nod at catcher, why not Heyward?
Believe me, Francoeur is not going to get much better than 2008 and management will grow tired of him.

Ring a bell? I hope that was unintentional. Sugar Ray Leonard was perhaps the most overrated fighter to ever lace up the gloves. I watched Hagler chase him around for 12 rounds as hard as he could with Sugar running like a scared little girl ‘till Hagler got tired, then Ray landed a flurry of rabbit punches while backpeddling that wouldn’t knock my 8 year old cousin out and Hagler looked over at the judges while the “punches” were still being thrown as if “how much do I have to pay this little %$#% to stand and fight like a heterosexual male?” and the judges gave it to sugar. That was the first major fix I remember watching.
Mosely straight up disassembled Margarito; I was surprised and pleased. When he made his walk through the tunnel I thought he was doing a farewell tour. That’s why they play the game.

Baseball America will use a 2012 projected lineup as a way to project what the Braves (or any other team) will look like at that point based on the top prospects coming up through the system. Thats not to say one player, we’ll say Heyward in this instance, will take until that year to arrive. He may even show up next year, who knows. But they just pick a future date for reference purposes so that there is time the top prospects to arrive.
He will not need 4 years to make it to the show.

The way I remember it, Junior wasn’t carrying around a ‘stuffed’ fish, rather he had produced the skeletal head of a fish (that I think one of his buddies pulled out of the ocean) that JR claimed was a new world’s record large-mouth bass that he had caught and eaten before he realized what he had. It was a ‘ho-ax’ that he parlayed into that ‘Hee Haw’ gig. In fact I couldn’t help but think of Junior when those yokels from up his way pulled the ‘remains of Big Foot’ scam some months back…and if truth were known they probably got the idea from good-ol Junior in the first place…

Mark-
some Slim Pickens trivia off the Dr. Strangelove DVD: the original line was spoken on film as “Shoot, a guy could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all this stuff”. The movie was scheduled for release the Friday after JFK ended up being assassinated (in Dallas, of course). The studio immediately pulled the film from release (for reasons related to the national state of mourning after the assassination, not because of that one line), and by the time it was first released (again) the next year, Kubrick had had Pickens re-dub the line to omit “Dallas”, and say “Vegas” instead. it was also said that the last line re: the “pretty good weekend” was a Slim Pickens ad-lib, which makes the next bit even better.
Pickens was not originally cast in the role of the B-52 pilot, Peter Sellers was (Sellers also cast in the role of the President, RAF Colonel Mandrake, and the title role). However, during rehearsals, Sellers fell off of the H-bomb and sprained/broke his ankle, and was unable to climb out onto the bomb sufficiently for the shots that Kubrick wanted, so a last minute call went out for Pickens. After Pickens arrived on-set in England, Kubrick was apparently so “impressed” with his person that he told Pickens that he didn’t want him to really act at all, just being himself was enough to carry off the part. (According to wiki, Pickens was not told that the movie was a black comedy at all, and was told just to play it “straight”, which, on subsequent viewings, is now my favorite performace among all the great ones in the movie.) So that “pretty good weekend” line is all Slim Pickens, just being himself. There you go. 45 seconds of your life spent reading this that you’ll never get back (or 7 minutes, if you’re VS2).

If the fans are “delighted” with the young prospects down on the farm, just think how euphoric they would be if the fools had not made the Drew and Teixeira trades.

also from wiki:
“Slim was an accomplished civilian pilot with a multi-engine rating. He enjoyed flying in a green U.S. Air Force flight suit while wearing a cowboy hat, similar to the wardrobe worn in Dr. Strangelove.”
awesome.

Hey Mark whats going on? At this point in the offseason, who do you see the Braves acquiring for the outfield? How much dough do you think they have left to spend?

If only we hadn’t thrown Neftali Feliz into the Texeira disaster. Buster Olney considers him the 3rd best prospect in all of baseball. Can you imagine a rotation of Jurrgens, Hanson, and Feliz? Sure, they’re all young, but it could have been an incredible three-headed monster, easily the best young rotation in all of baseball.

I don’t think the Braves will spend big for an outfielder. I think they’ll go to spring training with what they have and hope something clicks. If it doesn’t, they’ll try to make a deal before Opening Day.
Thanks for the Slim data, Reno. I probably need to get the “Dr. Strangelove” DVD. It’s a movie that rewards, as they say, repeated viewings.

Bradley good post! I agree with you, refuse to pay to be an “insider”. Thats a joke. I think the Falcons will go with the Stud TE from Oklahoma St in the first round. All the “projections” I’ve seen have him still there at 24. The guy is a monster, can block and is one of the best pure athletes in the draft. As far as the &ss Clown Teflon Don, how is it possible that he still has a job? I mean he is an expert for sure on “how to keep your job”. He could write a book on it. Muir is a moron, but I hope that projection is correct!!!! FIRE DON WADDELL oh and finally, SMOLTZ SOLD OUT BOSTON SUCKS

I would like to see DE Kalimba Edwards come to the Falcons. This is the second year of a 2 year contract for Oakland, and he was a monster when we played against them. The only thing Oakland had going. Also, he lives in Alpharetta, so the move would be quite attractive to him.

You can see more good Slim Pickens material alongside Willie Nelson in the movie “Honeysuckle Rose.” Lots of good old country music and classic Slim in that picture.
