This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Falcons in Super Bowl not so farfetched
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For 32 years they were words never spoken as a statement of fact, and even now they’ve been uttered just once. But it’s not inconceivable that we could hear them again come Jan. 18, 2009:
“The Falcons are going to the Super Bowl.”
The announcer who delivered that famous radio call on the afternoon of Jan. 17, 1999, believes the improbable could happen again. “Back then, it seemed so preposterous,” said Jeff Hullinger, then the Falcons’ play-by-play voice and now the morning newscaster on B-98.5 and the afternoon man on WSB. “Now that it’s been done, it doesn’t seem quite so impossible. They’ve shattered the myth.”
That’s true. We can never again say the Falcons can’t reach the Super Bowl because history tells us they advanced to Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami. (So, alas, do the court documents in the Eugene Robinson case.) Super Bowl XLIII will likewise be in Florida — Tampa, to be precise. And that season reached a crest in the Metrodome, conveniently the site of Sunday’s playoff-clinching victory.
“It’s easy to see the parallels,” Hullinger said. “Minneapolis occupies a special place in Falcons lore — there was the NFC championship game [of 1999], and the Michael Vick game [of 2002, when the quarterback ran 46 yards for the winning touchdown in overtime; Hullinger called that game, too]. And now this game. That place holds a watershed status.”
In 1998, a lot of folks didn’t take the Falcons seriously until November. “Not until they won in Foxborough [against New England] and [tight end] O.J. Santiago had that really big game,” Hullinger said. “If anything, people have gotten around to believing in this team a little faster.”
Still, there are varying shades of belief. For three months the 2008 Falcons were viewed as a feel-good story. Now you look on this team, which hasn’t lost consecutive games and hasn’t been beaten by more than 15 points and has held its own in the NFL’s toughest division, and you’re beginning to ask: Well, why not the Birds?
They’ve already beaten Carolina and Minnesota and Tampa Bay. They’d surely have a chance against Arizona, which just lost by 40 points in New England. And there’s no reason to think that toppling the NFC’s No. 1 seed would be any more difficult than it was to upend the 15-1 Vikings 10 years ago.
Said Hullinger: “Don’t you think they’re capable of beating the Giants?”
Well, yes. A team as sound as the Falcons — possessed of a strong running game and a heady quarterback and a defense that keeps making big plays — would have a shot against anybody anywhere. And, owing to Carolina’s loss in the Meadowlands on Sunday night, it’s possible the Falcons will finish as division champs, which would buy them the No. 2 seed. Which is what they were in 1998.
As Jessie Tuggle, an integral part of the Super Bowl run, said last week: “When you get in the playoffs, anything can happen. Why couldn’t this team do it?”
Four months ago these Falcons were 150-1 to win the Super Bowl, the longest shot on the board. They’re now listed at 16-1. The wind is at their backs. Not only are they winning, but a slew of other contenders are losing.
Once we’d have laughed ourselves silly at the thought of hearing those eight words — “The Falcons are going to the Super Bowl!” — anytime soon, but there should be no laughter today. It could happen. It really could.

All I really hope is that the Flacons get good enough to no longer have Brian Baldinger or Tony Boselli announcing their games. Those guys are the worst.

MB…which would serve better for the Falcons? The 5 seed getting to play a struggling Arizona team, or the 2 seed with the home playoff game? Who would we play first at home with the 2 seed? Thanks for the post.

What a year for the birds! Very happy to see the franchise pull itself out of the flames - like the Phoenix, the symbol of the city. Mike Smith and crew have done an amazing job. He is the new Bobby Cox of the city!

10 years ago I came within one impulsive thought of putting a 100 on the Falcons in Vegas, to win the Super Bowl. Well I would have lost anyway, but I lost more by not doing it. Before this year I had the same impulse and would have done it, but did not know a bookie.
I was in St. Louis for the 99 Rams, who went from awful suckage to being good almost overnight, and it was the same formula - coach, QB, great running back, and good enough, tough minded receivers - backed up by a sometimes stingy but always opportunistic defense of no-names. I remember the St. Louis defense reminded me of the old Falcons of Kuykendall and Curry.
The Falcons have had some very good defenses in odd years. Once they held the record for least points scored by an opponent - or something close to that - in the days of Claude Humphrey and John Zook.
Even then they were always a scrappy bunch. It sort of became a caricature under Glanville and suffered. Up until now, the Falcons have never created a star coach. Smith is very Falcon-like, like this defense.
Smith can’t get conservative. Falcons make up for their small size by being fierce and attacking lustily but not stupidly.
It’s really amazing to witness at one time the revitalization of two programs - first Tech and now the Falcons. That’s really rare. Maybe people are getting a clue.

as awesome as that would be looking past one’s next game is always a recipe for disaster. let’s beat the Rams, hold our noses & pull for the Saints and see where the chips fall. HOPEFULLY we can pull some starters against the Rams and the guys can watch the 1st round from their living rooms before hosting our 1st actual playoff game but 1st things 1st: get ready for Sunday and execute!

The No. 2 seed would get a bye and would play the highest remaining seed (excluding the No. 1 seed, which is New York) after the two first-round games. Arizona will be No. 4. The winner of the NFC Central (Minnesota or Chicago) will be No. 3.

I’ve always been a life long fan of the Falcons, going back to the days at the old Fulton County Stadium. I remember when we made it to the Super Bowl in 1999 and how excited everyone around here was. This team may just be able to go all the way this year and complete the last step that the 1998 team didn’t get to. Everyone in the organization has done a spectacular job this year… the players, coaches, the front office, EVERYONE!!!! THIS IS THE YEAR WHERE THEY WILL BRING ATLANTA IT’S FIRST SUPER BOWL TITLE!!!! GO FALCONS!!!! FLY HIGH!!!!

boots,
“Mike Smith and crew have done an amazing job. He is the new Bobby Cox of the city!”
You’re kidding, right! Now, should the Falcons make the playoffs the next 14 consecutive years and like Bobb Cox get handed by the GM the best talent in the NFL for about 10 of those years and win only one Super Bowl then Mike Smith would be like Bobby Cox. I don’t know, but unlike Bobby Cox mining his nose and WAITING for something to happen, Mike seems to like to MAKE things happen—major difference in coaching/managing philosophy!

Since MB was not abundantly clear… If we win the division (New Orleans has a shot to beat /Carolina since they are at home and Brees is going after Marino’s record), we get the bye and then play the winner of the 3 vs 6 game. That looks to be Vikings vs Dallas in this case.
Would we rather play @ Arizona and then @ Giants or a bye and then host the ‘Boys?
go Saints. go Brees.

The way i see it, History is repeatin itself, in 1998 Tuggel was our Defensive Key and Brooking was a rookie LB, not mention the outstanding running of The Original Dirty Bird Anderson. Now 10 years later John Abraham is the Key to ur defense and Lofton is Our rookie LB. The Burner is runnin over everybody, and Our Hot Handed QB (who thinks he can fly) is Money. Fumble, Fumble, Foiled by Fumbles, Timeouts burned, and Vikings humbled.
Are there deep mystical forces working for the Falcons? Surely it would take a spell to make the football take flight from the scrimmage line and scramble backwards purposefully toward the Falcon’s end zone twice in just a few minutes.
Or do the Falcons have an angel? A mischievous angel with a sense of humor that harkens back to the keystone cop silent movie era. An angel who turned the vikings into bumbling fumblers. The multiple images of the vikings chasing the pigskin dozens of yards behind their line of scrimmage provides some of the lighter moments of the past 300 years of stooge history.
There can be only one reason that supernatural beings would favor our Falcons: The ghosts of Vicks Dogs will be avenged even if it takes an unholy aliance of witches, angels, and willful pigskins. OMG I just invented the cheerleader eligible play!

Yes they have been lucky. One can define lucky as being prepared to grasp opportunities that present themselves, such as recovering a fumble for a touchdown, recovering a fumble to stop a drive, etc. Attitude and preparation are what makes the difference between unlucky and lucky.

Whatever happens after this point this season has been a joy and a blessing. I hope for the best but after the last several years of disappointments and disasters nothing could make me regret re-upping for season tickets. The birds are now a legitimate franchise with a young base and a bright future, one to be proud of. I doubt a Super Bowl is in the cards this year but so what? Who hasn’t enjoyed the ride? Thank you Mike Smith, Matt Ryan, Thomas, Arthur, the Burner and all of the players and coaches for giving us a reason to wear our Falcons shirt and hats with pride. The fact that someone would even mention the Super Bowl shows just how great this season and team has been. I see MVPs, and Super Bowls in the Falcons’ future but lets not lessen this season by regarding it anything other then a success whatever happens from here. Go Falcons and go Saints (at least for this week)

The PERFECT scenario: 1. New Orleans beats Carolina and the Falcons beat the Rams and win the NFC South, the number 2 seed and a first round bye while Dallas beats the Eagles for the 6th playoff seed. 2. The Cowboys beat the Bears/Vikings, the # 3 seed, on the road in their first playoff game. 3. The Falcons beat the Carolina/Arizona winner at home in their first playoff game while the Cowboys beat the Giants on the road. 4. The Falcons host the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game and beat them to go to the Super Bowl. 5. The Falcons upset the AFC Champions to win the Super Bowl. 6. I’m at all the Falcons games with my Deland, Fl next door neighbor, Sam Smith, head Coach Mike Smith’s Dad.

Vick is still the best make no bone about it. But matt has done good. But the honeymoon is over. Matt can’t hold up under pressure. the defensive let him have a free pass the frist eight games. They will dail up the pressure watch. Because they saw how he punk out and smith knowes it. look at the last 4 games. when they put the package on him with a few hit he punked out. Other teams will play with his head. Matt will be worst than Romo under pressure. Matt a kid and you will see it in the play off watch and see. Matt can’t handel the real pressure! But there is hope for matt (if )he don’t let the hit get in his head because they are comming they watch the last 4 games too!!

Atlanta would not automatically play the winner of the 3-6 game in the above-mentioned scenario. The NFL re-seeds teams after the Wild Card round. So - if the 4 and 6 teams win, the Giants would face the 6 seed and the Falcons would play the 4.

We truly have a legitimate shot at the #2 seed…but as Coach Smith says, we will take it one game at a time. That means focusing on St. Louis and only St. Louis. As for Carolina at New Orleans….all i can say is “Geaux Saints”!!
As for the preseason odds….you could also find the Falcons at 200 to 1 to win the SuperBowl….i should know, i’ve got $500 on it….or $100,000!!

Vick never threw for 3000 yards in a season. Ryan has thrown for 3280 in 15 games. Vick never quarterbacked his team to more than 11 wins in a season. Ryan has two games left (one regular season and at least one playoff game) to win his 11th game as QB. Vick’s BEST QB rating was 81.6, and his career avg is 75.7. Ryan, in his rookie season, is 8 pts better than Vick at his best (89.7).
i’m no Vick “hater,” and pleased with what he did when he was here.
but the notion that he’s a better QB than Ryan simply isn’t supported by the facts.
and before anyone cries “well, if Vick had the same coaching and personnel that Ryan has had…” - just stop. does anyone seriously think Dmitroff or Smith would want Vick over Ryan if they were drafting today? they picked Ryan because he’s a gym rat that watches tons of film and knows how to run a pro-style offense. they love having a QB who can run the no-huddle and still actually run plays in the playbook, who can audible at the line. they have a real QB, not just a “dynamic” player who was great at imrpovising but below average at running an offense that could actually hold up over an entire season.
ask Lawyer Milloy who he’d prefer as his QB. ask Roddy White or Michael Jenkins. they’ll tell you who’s better.
and as for Ryan “folding under pressure,” lol - does anyone remember what Vick did against disciplined defenses that brought pressure - Philly and TB ate his lunch. the idea that “dealing with pressure” is actually an argument for Vick is just silly.

C’mon espn— vick was a thrower with speed. He couldn’t run a no-huddle offense if his life depended on it. Plus, he rode the pine as a rookie. Vick also could not throw into double and triple coverage. Please enjoy this Falcons team. Its all grayvee from here on out and the future looks bright. Either stay on the bandwagon or get off.

Its funny that you put the crown on “Ice”,lol after a measily 15 games. What you fail to realize is that the NFL does this for every QB that comes in and plays well in the beginning. I’m going to put it like this, i think it would be easier for us to be the #2 seed cause that way, the Falcons can be prepared such as the Cowboys, Bears, etc. Matt Ryan deserve to win the MVP and Mike Smith deserve to win the coach of the year cause we went from the suckiest team last team last year into the winningist team this year.

The No. 2 seed would get a bye and would play the highest remaining seed (excluding the No. 1 seed, which is New York) after the two first-round games. Arizona will be No. 4. The winner of the NFC Central (Minnesota or Chicago) will be No. 3.
Mark, as I understand it, if Chicago (the long shot to back into the playoffs) wins their division, Arizona would move up to the No. 3 seed and The Bears would be the No. 4. Hard to believe, considering how awful the Cardinals have been lately.
If that happens and the Falcons stay at the No. 5 seed, then that means Atlanta would travel to windy chilly Soldier Field to play da Bears in round one, who would surely be out for revenge after da Birds 11 second comeback game during the regular season.
That’s one scenario I surely hope doesn’t happen. Let’s hope the Falcons get the No. 2 seed and the bye!
It’s certainly possible The Falcons can get to Super Bowl XLIII; It just seems like the Football Gods are shining down on Atlanta this season after all our suffering.

Within a few months, Vick’s fudge will be completely packed and he will be back in virginia. When he is released from Federal custody Goodell will impose a suspension of some particular length upon him. He’s been under an indeterminate suspension while in prison. Now it will get real. I suspect he will be suspended for all the 2009-2010 season. There are several issues that call out for punishment. Not the least of them is gambling and traveling across state lines to gamble illegally. No team will sign him until the suspension is lifted. so, it will be the 2010-2011 season before we see that dunce runnung around, making a mess and a fool of himself. If any team will take his sorry behind on.

it sure has been fun watching the falcons this season. I hope they do make it to the super bowl. Even during the preseason you could tell the falcons were going to be better. The o line was so aggressive they kept getting 15 yd penaltiescalled against them., but hey you knew they were trying at a high level. The intensity all season has been great. The coaches and the players are getting their just awards for suchhard work. Go falcns

Great article Mark. I agree with your take. Even if, God forbid, the Falcons should fall short in the playoffs (which I doubt); I’m still satisfied with the direction that this great organization has taken(thank you Mr. Blank). There’s no doubt in my mind that the Falcons will appear in a Super Bowl within the next few seasons if not this season. The Lombardi trophy will come to Atlanta. The “team” concept has been bought by every player on the roster and you can tell that their not out on the field to just “collect” a pay check. You can see passion in the eyes of every player. I’m confident that as long as we have the hierarchy intact (Mr. Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith) we will witness the making of a dynasty. We have the main ingredients here. A little sprinkle here and there over the next few seasons and we will witness sheer dominance of the NFL. Be patient…

Yeah, Vick will be back in the Dome for sure ….. only if he can get a job selling popcorn ….. conditions for early release will not allow him to sell beer.
Number 7 formally of the Falcons will never play pro football again. No team will want the aggravation from the animal rights groups, not to mention that he was only an average QB to begin with.

Mike Smith and the Falcons of 2008 have won me over!I haven’t watched the Falcons for years because I could not stand them, i.e. Michael Vick, Algie Crumpler, DeAngelo Hall and several other thugs on the team. Now they seen to have a first class organization! Starting with a great coach that has pulled together a TEAM! They are playing like a TEAM and winning as a TEAM! This is something that has been missing for years! Keep up the good work! Go Falcons!

I think that one of the biggest reasons the Falcons are playoff bound is due to the brilliant effort of running back Michael Turner this season.
I propose that the name of the stadium that serves as the Birds home field be changed from *The Georgia Dome” to be newly renamed as *Turner Field”.
Ok then, how about Turner Field II?

Agree with this post completely. These two announcers are the pits. Only worse when they add a 3rd to the booth. It is such a distraction from the game listening to the try to outtalk each other that I finallly turn the volume off. which is distracting in itself. Like these guys think they must fill every second of the broadcast with noise, and most of what they have to say is either meaningless…… repeating the same obvious point over and over as if it is some revelation… or a combination of both ….!
Did hear one announcer last week that was worse however …. Deion -

The true test for this team will not be the post season, but rather the upcoming off season. As most Falcon fans know by now, this franchise has never had back-to-back winning seasons. How will this team respond to next season’s challenges ? The Falcons will be drafting 25th, not 3rd. The Lions and the Rams will be replaced by the Giants and Cowboys. Matt Ryan, MIchael Turner and Roddy White will be known quantities. Sunday night, Monday nite, and Thursday nite games will disrupt preparations. This season has been wonderful, but much of it will be for naught if the Falcons don’t handle success.

I agree about the dynasty, but I also remember the first year that Mike Vick was the starter. That was pretty magical, too. And that 1998 season was one that I’m still looking at as extremely magical.
But this team is better suited for a longer run because it’s not on the shoulders of one guy. Matt Ryan, as good as he is, doesn’t have nor need the tools to take a game, put it on his shoulders, and just carry a team. He’s good at his role.
But it is a role among many other roles that others are playing on this team. And that’s what makes this team special.
As for Mike Vick, he will play for another team. And I hope that the next team he plays for learn from the mistakes that the Falcons made. Build a great team, not build a team around one great player.

In a year where all the Atlanta teams had losing records (save the now on hiatus GA Force); the Falcons have energized this city. The good thing, if you do get a 2 seed, the wild cards are tougher than Minnesota and Arizona. If one wins and one loses, we would host one of Arizona or Minnesota and the Giants would play a much tougher game, maybe Bucs or Cowboys. In theory, we have a decent chance of hosting the NFC if we get a 2 seed.

Okay, saying it’s “not inconceivable” is not saying they’re GOING to the Super Bowl. They have a chance, and that’s pretty darned good if you ask me. I too would like to see this be merely the start—I think they can break the streak and put up another winning season next year, but I’ve thought that before. I think we definitely need to upgrade the defense a bit, so let’s wait and see what happens in the offseason and with the draft.
I think the AFC’s top teams are better than the NFC’s this year, but like I said… there’s always that chance.

Hey Titans4life, don’t count your SB chickens just yet. Think back to 2000-2001. I’m sure you remember it all too well.Titans had never lost in the home stadium until the Ravens came to town late in the year. Then, here came the wild-card Ravens in the second round of the playoffs. Titans were huge favorites at home. Ravens kicked their a* on the way to a 34-7 win in SB 35 — in Tampa. Guess what? this year will be the same. The Ravens will be marching through Nashville in a couple of weeks on their way back to a repeat performance in another Tampa Super bowl. You can count on an L when we hit the music city. And guess who the Ravens will be playing in Tampa this time — The Atlanta Falcons- the only other team in the NFL that I love. What a Joyous SB it will be. Enjoy the Grond Ole Opry while I’m in Tampa catching some rays watching my two favorite teams slug it out for the Lombardi trophy. I can’t wait.

I realize that an ugly win is still a win, but take an objective look at the last game before you get Super Bowl giddy. Minnesota fumbledseven times and we only won by 7 points. I hope that the Falcons face someone other than the Vickings in the playoffs. I believe that the Vikings would have too much of an incentive to prove that they lost the game, rather than Atlanta winning it.

@Manny
That was a great comment you made at 9:56am. Thats what I hate about these fans. They were saying these same things about Vick, and now its “Vick never did anything,” “bust”, and all this other BS. I believe the NFL itself is overdoing this Matt Ryan thing. Yes, he is a good QB, but going to the SB and he being MVP of the league w/the year Peyton Manning is having? Thats a complete slap in the face to football and to an all-time great. Ryan doesn’t even belong in the conversation, Michael Turner does. He shouldn’t even be rookie of the year, it should be Chris Johnson of the Titans because if you take away Mike Turner, the Falcons are nothing. He takes all the pressure off of Ryan and all he has to do is not turn the ball over. Thats no MVP. I will say this, Vick will have a MVP worthy season within 2 years, maybe one, when he returns. The talent is there, and he will find the right team to harness it instead of having an idiot like Jim Mora who doesn’t even deserve to be the head coach in Seattle. The front office was a mess when Vick was here, poor draft after poor draft, poor FA after poor FA. Turner is the best move that the Falcons have made in a long time, and Abraham was hated to death buy you people when he was always hurt, but now you people love him, lol. The Atlanta fans are a bunch of flip flopping, bandwagon jumpers. Losers. This city sucks as a sports city, one of the worse that I’ve ever seen. No one shows up to games to support the teams, there’s more people that come to see the visitors and thats sad. Redemption is near……………..

Atlanta is not a “baseball town.” It’s a NOTHING town. Yuppies from elsewhere who view sporting events as social events first. When the Braves were in their heyday, the “fans” arrived in the 3rd inning and left in the 7th. You want to see real baseball fans in a real baseball town in a real baseball stadiun, go to NYC. My only concern is the secondary defense. Minnesota and Tavaris Jackson picked them apart. If not for all the fumbles, which were caused only twice by Falcons defensive players, the score would have been closer, and they might not have won. I was not impressed with the defensive schemes, pass coverage, and they really did not stop their running game in key situations. Defense wins championships, and realistically, with the average age being somewhere in the mid-20’s on defense, we will have our hands full when the pressure is on and good offensive passing teams use it to their advantage in the playoffs. Even if they don’t make it past the first game, I am still proud of this team, and look forward to even more development and key draft and free agent signings in the spring. If we are going to the Super Bowl, it will be because the defensive unit and VanGorder tighten up the schemes and protect against the big pass plays.

Matt supporters the NFL has given him a free pass . why do I say that . look at what the defensive have done . No pressure till the phily and bucks gammes . The vikes did it too. now from here on the honeymoon will be over. If you look at the last four games they have punked matt out. Tunner is the reason for the season. Time here is what I am talking about. He has had all day till the last four game . That why I say the NFL has let him have a pass. next season you want hear the MVP stuff. most QB in the NFL can throw when they have time. No Bump and run on the recivers and all day to pass yes the NFL is out to make him look better than he is. Just look at the last four games. Tunner is why we are winning. Redman could have done the same thing if he had the same hand! pressure is the key word here and the NFL has let him have a pass!!

I am so happy for the Falcon organization and their fans. Finally, after all the thuggery we’ve put up with for the last few years, we have a team that we can be proud of, a team that smells clean, that appears to have ethics and morals and rules, that plays hard, together, and loves one another like family.
If not another game is won, this year is a success and something to build a future on. Thank God, Authur cleaned house and breathed new life with a new GM and Coach, who had the foresight to bring in a franchise QB & future Pro Bowl RB.
Hey ESPN, how is it Roddy White sucked and couldn’t catch a cold until a real QB came to town and now we find out we actually had Pro Bowl talent at WR? How is it we couldn’t run the ball until we found a real RB playing 2nd fiddle in SD, Cal?
The nice thing about MV7 is if he ever gets out of jail, and if the commish ever reinstates him, by contract his a* still belongs to the Falcons until 2014 and he will not see a football field again unless another team is willing to put up mucho draft picks in trade. Even though salary caps count against the team, they at least don’t have to pay Vick as long as he’s suspended.
If I were Authur Blank, I would make sure Vick’s career would be permanantly over, unless the Falcons can recover a some of what they’ve lost in the whole debacle though a trade for high draft picks over a number of years, kind of like the Hershel Walker trade from Dallas to Minnesota.

“espn,” “FREND 4 VICK,” “Vick Supporter” and “MV7 supporter” continually spoil these Falcon blogs with their extremely biased, emotionally charged, factually inaccurate, gramatically deficient, completely irrelevant comments. This is supposed to be a discussion about the 2008 Atlanta Falcons and their incredible shot at going to the Super Bowl. Vick is no longer a player on this team. No informed, rational person would ever be able to imagine a scenario in which he would ever become a member of this team again. Nor would that person, if he or she is a true fan, want him back on this team. If you clowns can’t get over your misguided love for this loser, go somewhere else and sulk. We true Falcon fans want to discuss our impressive team and its remarkable turnaround this year. Unlike you, we don’t care about its past, which was immensely sorry under Mike Vick.

Can’t believe we have people still talking about how good Vick is and how he is going to be back. To think our children wanted to be like him.
Whoever you people are that want Vick back, you have got to be the scum of the earth.
Real human beings don’t root for criminals who kill dogs for fun. You should be saying “good riddance” rather than “wait till he is back.” Seriously, what do you want this world to come to? The world will be better off if he is taken care of in jail.

When it was announced the Atlanta falcons were selecting Michael Vick as their quarterback, I must admit I was quite shocked. Even though I was convinced he was the best college athlete of my lifetime, it was painfully obvious he didn’t possess the tools necessary to successfully manage a pro-style offense. I was sure he would be exciting and a blast to watch on Sundays, which he was. But I always thought of him as just a grand experiment by the powers that be, just to see what might happen. I never honestly thought anyone would seriously believe he would make a well-rounded pro quarterback. Even under the tutorledge of the masterful Dan Reeves he never developed the ability to put any “touch” on the ball. I heard Vick called a “coach” killer for his inability to ever grasp pro concepts, but I was always more concerned about his receiver ” killing.” He made receivers look worse than any pro quarterback I have ever witnessed. Not only were the majority of drops his fault but the receivers just got sick and tired of running routes just to break wide open and see Vick running and leaping in the air over someone. The other thing that comes to mind when I learned Vick was to be a Falcon is I remember being concerned about his character. I didn’t know much about him personally, but what little i learned about his family, friends and upbringing, led me to doubt he could ever manage the rigors of pro quarterback. Make no doubt about it, Vick is a fabulous athlete, maybe the best ever. But pro quarterback, now that has got to be some kind of a cruel joke! To compare him to the true quarterbacks of the NFL is the gravest of insults that has ever been leveled against such a select group. If you want to idolize him, I say go right ahead. But please, please don’t disgrace the game any further by considering him a ‘great’ quarterback. He is an exciting athlete that some have chosen to place their ‘hope’ in. But he will ‘never ever’ be a great quarterback.

Before the season started, I couldn’t figure out why everyone was writing the falcons off before they even played a game. I didn’t assume that they would be good or bad, I was just excited to see what would happen, and to my surprise, they have been outstanding. Goes to show that all the talk and expert analysis doesn’t mean squat on the field. Right now the Falcons have every bit as good a chance to get to and win the super bowl as any other team in the playoffs, but hopefully the doubters will keep doubting because it seems to have given the Falcons a chip on thier shoulder!! I think that the Birds are going to do great in the playoffs, and even if they don’t make it past the first round, the season is still a total success. Congrats to the Falcons on a great year!!!

Enjoyed the article.
I do not feel that parallels in sports are anything other than coincidence…but it is strange how they often play out. My feeling is the Falcons, if they can get the #2 slot, have an excellent chance of making it to the Super Bowl as:
1) Only have to win two games to get there.
2) One game is guaranteed to be at home.
3) I think the most dangerous teams left in the NFC are the teams who haven’t clinched. I think Tampa Bay, Dallas or Philadelphia (one of these teams being a #6) will win their wild-card game, go to New York and beat the Giants and set up the Falcons having two potential home games.
I like the Falcons’ chances—a lot—against any team in the NFL as long as it is played in the Georgia Dome.
The good thing is—win or lose this year—this looks like a team that if it, God-willing, doesn’t suffer any injuries to its key players—and adds a few more at key positions, could be a NFL dynasty.
With the Vick/Mora mess and the Braves’ recent misfortunes, this has been a very satisfying season.
Mr. Blank—Please buy the Braves, too!

Ok peeps….here’s the list. 1. Yes, our Falcons are in the playoffs. We STILL need to beat the St. Louis Lambs AND have the Saints help us in tripping Carolina.
Michael Vick was a great athlete, but his potential to be a great quarterback was stymied by wrong coaching; i believe that if Reeves had stayed, he would have been a far better presence on MV than Mora Junior could. But that is in the past, and even if MV were reinstated, he wont have a place here. Maybe the CFL…
Even if the scenarios do fit and the Falcons do get the home game, they STILL have things to work on on both sides of the ball, for the NFL Playoffs is way bigger than the regular season…because it boils down to this: Win or Die.

I’ve been in this choir box, singing songs of faith, all season long.
I had serious doubts when the Falcons hired a guy they’d talked to only over a video conferencing line but he made a believer of me when he got rid of Crumpler and no-talent Hall. He showed me he was serious about making a new beginning. He brought in Turner, drafted Ryan and didn’t express any equivocation about what he was doing. He was certain that getting rid of Vick-era non-producers was for the best and he was right! His hiring of Mike Smith I also doubted as an intelligent move. It was brilliant! Mr. Smith is not a loud sort that demands much attention. What he is is a hell of a coach.
The biggest surprise has been the cohesiveness of the team. The defense has been brilliant and the offense has been too. The individuals on the team believe in and trust one another. This is a team and not one guy with a bunch of fellow travelers. They’ve made the playoffs and I believe they will appear in the Super Bowl. If they do, the will win it!

Interestingly, I must say that Kool Aid is a delicious drink. Believe all that you want. They did Have a magical season. The Giants are a broken team right now, but Did ATLANTA POUND Minnesota? 7 turnovers, and an almost comeback drive? Many of those turnovers, the vikes were on the verge of scoring? When people write superbowl articles, it hypes fans up and sets them up for dissapointment, so instead of enjoying the success, you get that sick-to-your-stomach-we-got-kicked-out-of-the-playoffs feeling. Don’t de-value this season with early superbowl talk. It is dangerous.
As far a Vick- He brought revenue, fun and excitement. Coaching and management have a part to play in all of this. We need to forgive, and move on. He was convicted. True. He is paying his debt to society. True. He shouldn’t be suspended from the league after his return. I believe Federal prison was punishment enough. Fans speak as if they never loved him. What a dirty feeling to be disowned by millions of falcons fans in one breath. Vick didn’t do right by the Falcon fans, but Fans loved vick (Fear wheather) and they didn’t do right by him with the zero support.
Anyway, congrats to Matt Ryan, I like his style. Hard work and studying pays off. Look at Manning and Brady, being a cerebral QB as well as an athlete pays off.
Take it one game at a time. Blowing fans&the teams head up with bowl and seeding talk can be disastrous. How can they grow, when everyone is so drunk off victory that no one took a critical look at the poor play versus minnesota.

Hey Y’all:
Hell no, it is not far fetched for the Atlanta Falcons to be in the Super Bowl this year. What they have accomplished so far should have been made a believer out of everyone. But the secret is even though the FALCONS had a fiasco last year they had drafted talent and players to fulfill their goal of having a great season. Noe the new management and great cpoaches have assembled the old talent with the new, and tweak the goal and mission of the organization and now you have a more than viable football team in our grat city of Atlanta. Those on the outside of our city are confused and dumbfounded about the developments but we in Atlanta now the base talent was still here. We had an offensive line that led the league in rushing for 2 years. The have added more agrressive personnel to the mix and they are even better than the previous group. What can you say about the quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner. Roddy White and MIchael Jenkins are now running routes and catching at designated spots where the plays are designed to be thrown and will be thrown by the quarterback 90% of the time with no scrambling. This has intensified their focus on catching the ball which that are doing at a high rate. Our defense has been tweaked to allow Abraham to reat to get the best out of him to ensure he can be in the mix throuighout the season. This is great game management. I love what the coaches bring to the table. They bring smart football sense and creativity utilizing the great talent that they have on this team. The new stars of the FALCONS are starting to shine. Every game we are hearing their namers and they are making great plays (i.e., Harry Douglas, Fierman, etc.) There is more exciting things coming out of this team that will be a surprise to the leaugue. But that is their fault. They should have scouted better. They did not onvite us to the dance, buit now we arfe here to “CRASH” the party. MOst of all, we are going to leave with the prettiest girl there: THE SUPER BOWL TROPHY. So get your invitation to the dance. And remember to “BELIEVE” and come in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!” Yeah, “ONE HEARTBEAT, BABY!!”

The way I see it. If we make the #2 spot. Get the home game I feel very confident that we will win it(I do not want to play Minn. again) I think it is even possibe that the Giants could lose their first game. I heard the annoucers saying the Giants were back against Carolina.. I didn’t see it,yes they won, but in many ways the Giants had to get some very good breaks even at home. Mark Bradley you are a genius. I have been saying the same thing all year after the miraculous but skillfully well executed defeat of the Chicago Bears. After viewing that ballgame I knew that I had watched something special. I felt that game should have become an instant classic on ESPN. I dont know if it ever did or not but I knew the Falcons COULD beat all odds after the sensational finish of the Bears game. From that point on, the Falcons have progressively gotten better each week and are at the zenith of their ability. That being said, I have been appauled by the venamous and insidious BLOGS by the VickSupporters (namely 1,2,3 and 4). The only way that I can think of silencing the VickSupporters once and for all is for the Falcons to win the SuperBowl this season and that will cause all Mike Vick senseless chatter to cease and become mute once and for all. The ONLY reason I believe the Falcons can and WILL win the superbowl this season is because this campaign represents the most parity that I have ever witnessed in the NFL in quite sometime. Whichever team is hot when the playoffs begin will bring home the Vince Lombardi trophy. There is no clear cut favorite to speak of and there are no dominant teams out there. THE FALCONS HAVE JUST AS GOOD A CHANCE AS ANYONE IN THE NFL TO CAPTURE THE VINCE LOMBARDI TROPHY THIS YEAR. Go Falcons!

People are so stupid who think that Matt Ryan’s success is what got the Falcons to this point, but I’m not saying that he didn’t help. Football is so much bigger than one person and I think it’s so evident when looking at teams like the Ravens, Dolphins, Patriots, and especially the Falcons. These teams are coached very well and have new, but very significant players who are getting the job done. It’s not because they are so great, it’s the hungry teams they’re on, the coaching staff, and everything is clicking. Look at the Patriots, everyone thought when Tom Brady went down that was the end of New England but guess what they still are one of the best teams in the AFC, do you think Matt Cassel is a diamond in the ruff? You’ve got to be kidding me if you do, the guy was a backup in high school and all the way up to now. Again I’m not saying Cassel is sorry, but it is definitely not because of him that they’re winning. This is a team game, no one man can win by himself, that is the very reason why Mike Vick couldn’t win. Only thing one man can do is hinder a team from winning or help, but never win by himself.

I am bold enough to predict what will be on Matt Ryans resume after the 2008 NFL Season is over.#1) Rookie of the year; #2) MVP of the entire league; and most importantly #3) Superbowl MVP. I believe those three accomplishments will be secured by Matt Ryan after this NFL campaign is over. If I am correct, then the Falcons will have accomplished a superbowl Vickless Victory and a rookie qb will have led the Falcons to the championship. Dont laugh, its been done before. Big Ben Rathisburger of the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacked the Steelers to win the superbowl in Bens rookie season, so it can be done and the Falcons are good enough to accomplish it this season.

Shaad, you make some good points but Cassel has thrown for 3615 yards and 21 touchdowns. Ryan has thrown for 3280 yards, with 15 touchdowns. Do I think Cassel is a diamond? You bet I do! Ryan? Better know it! These guys have lifted their teams to levels they would not have other wise reached. One man teams? Hardly! Neither has sought that sort of recognition. both have major accomplishments that were achieved within the team concept and therein lies the difference between them and Vick. Vick wanted to win games all by himself and when he often failed, he put the blame on coaches, receivers and whomever else seemed an appropriate patsy. Neither Cassel nor Ryan has had to resort to this because they play for the team to win and win they do!

The Falcons have played Carolina twice, Tampa Bay twice, Minnesota and Chicago one each, Denver and San Diego once each. At least four of those teams will qualify for the playoffs.

Good post Jim Grogan. Your perfect scenario is just that … PERFECT! I have thought this very same thing. If the Falcons defeat the Cowboys in the NFC championship, this would bring the Falcon’s fate of 3 decades ago to full circle justice. Then on to the Super Bowl. But this time WE WIN! Why not. This team is a fighter!
Congratulations Falcons! What an amazing season!

Merry Christmas to you to MV7Supporter too, as well as all other Falcon fans. I don’t know about you but X-Mas came early last Sunday for me. Let go of the hate and bickering and look forward to more Falcon football this year and next. May Vick have a chance at more football after prison, he has served his time, this is America, land of redemption, but it won’t be here. We have moved on or are trying to. Go Falcons!!

I am hoping, just hoping that the Braves organization is witnessing what the Falcons have accomplished so far.
I am hoping that they will see that when you have a good owner who cares, like Arthur Blank, then you will see the results on the field.
The Braves need new owners in a really bad kind of way. I am hoping with enough comments about this very subject, that maybe the word will get to Blank about needing to buy the Braves.
It would be nice to having something to look forward to once the warm weather returns. It’s a long time between the Pro Bowl and training camp.
I don’t care anything about basketball or hockey, so I consider the time between the Pro Bowl and Spring Training the “Dead Zone” of sports.

Hey Crabaapplejoe… Merry Christmas to you too. I am a former yankee (MI) as well but not bitter about the South like Movin Thru - I love it here, been here 25 years and love the thought every year about never shoveling snow again. And I feel the same way about people who campare ATL to up North too ‘if you don’t like it then leave’. Plus it was great to switch from Lions to Falcons football. Here we go! I’ll be there Sunday to watch us move on up. Go Falcons! God there is nothing on TV.

We were grounded last year, the year before that, the year before that and the year before that. The Falcons’ story is so improbable and inspirational that remaining grounded is not an option. This franchise was washed up and, literally, left for dead by a bum coach who sneaked out of here in the middle of the night. Short of success and long on failure, the franchise has started over and has done so in a big way. I’m not assuming anything about the future but I do believe!

I appreciate that man, I get so much s** in here, but to be honest, its very entertaining. The raciscm on here is actually funny to me most of the time, but I think most people on here are good at heart, except for Algonquin J. Calhoun *. That dude is a straight up idiot. I just speak what I think he can do, and he will. I’ll give it to Ryan, it looks like Ryan has a good “moxie” about him, and he can play in this league. Vick has already done, it. If you think about it, although Vick wasn’t a rookie (he technically was, I still think he should have stayed at VA Tech), but the man has all-world skills, its too bad that he wasn’t smart enough to use it right. He had it all…..and blew it, but *to you falcons fans, its life, he went through his rough period of his life as we all have and he can’t go anywhere but up. If Turner gets hurt ya’ll are done. Mr. Vicksucker, you are the one making comments about ethnic characteristics. Like a chitlin’ left too long in the deep fat fryer, your mind is a crispy, fragile thing. You don’t remember speaking in racially insensitive terms but you are quite quick to accuse others of the racism you haven’t the integrity to claim as your own. Also, let me point out to you there’s a difference between going through a rough period and being incarcerated for two years for involvement in a criminal enterprise that went on for six years. Vick’s a criminal, not an accident victim!

Hey Algonquin J Calhoun they just can’t stand the fact that Matt Ryan (with his blond hair and blue eyes) is a real quarterback and a real man. Deep down inside they hate the fact that they look and act like that low-life Mike Vick. I was speaking with one of my former black employees today and she said the truth. She said “its not like we want to live around white folks because we think they are better…but we just get tired of living around other black folks that can’t act right and just do stupid shi*”. Jockstap 2 hates the white man and all that he stands for….it pretty simple. If you are remotely a “Falcons fan” you would love what Matt Ryan has brought to this city this year. If you are a black racist like Jockstrap 2 it makes your blood boil because it destroys your world view. Merry Christmas.

Funny, VICK SUPPORTER complaining of getting racist comments, when YOU YOURSELF sir are a racist hiding behind a “vick supporter” gimmick.
FACE IT…IT KILLS YOU THAT A WHITE QB is LEADING THE FALCONS to the playoffs while your FAILED hero SITS in the FEDERAL PEN.
Also keep dreaming, VICK isn’t going to be playing in the NFL in 09. Roger G. will lay down the HAMMER of 1 year until he can come back…which puts that to 2010…how much do you think he’ll have left in the tank and which team is going to want to touch a convincted FELLON who has already once destroyed a FRANCHISE?

I remember listing to and/or watching Braves games and hearing ole Skip Carey say (everytime he had the opportunity), “We’re going into the bottom of the fifth inning, and I’m not affraid to say it folks, but (fill-in-the-blank Braves pitcher) has a perfect game - no-hitter going.”
Never failed. First a walk, then a hit. Then a three-run homer. Braves lose.
Mark Bradley must think this will be the only time to say those words AND be able to say he said it first. Not that he really thinks the Falcons could go to you-know-where. He just wants to not be superstitious for our sake.

Honestly, Vick was good at what he did, which was run. He had one hell of an arm but was just so innacurate it wasnt even funny. I believe Matt Ryan is a much better QB. Vick was a better runner and a better entertainer(thats why the dome was sold out almost every week).
I feel Matt Ryan gives us the best chance at winning. Vick won games but i feel he lost more games than he should have because of his decision making. Vick is a Run first, Run second, Pass third QB, where as Ryan is a pass first, run second. The best thing about the whole situation is that even though the dome is no longer being sold out, we still have the true Falcons fans while all the Vick fans have moved on.
Heres to a wonderful career for Mike Smith and Matt Ryan. Go Falcons and GEAUX SAINTS(for this week)

I still want to know how the football goes twenty yards backwards in the blink of an eye twice in three minutes. Doesn’t anyone else think there’s dark forces at work for the Falcons? Like a sprite, or a gremlin, or a ghost of a certain dog owned by a certain former quarterback.
if you imagine an invisible pup on the field of play biting at opposing team’s shoes and peeing on the football to make it slippery and humping the other team’s mascot, well, then it explains everything that’s happened, man.
Why doesn’t anybody see it? What are you all? Tin Fans? Footballbots? Heartless cads?
There’s a lone spirit out there, and it follows the falcons around like a loyal friend, like man’s best friend, like the Falcon’s BFF!!!!

Great season for the Falcons. I’ve been a fan since they came to Atlanta and this is one of their best seasons ever — with loads of hope for the future. However, they won’t be going to the Superbowl this year; they have two fatal flaws: 1) The Falcons defense is still weak in multiple areas and cannot stop a well-run offense. 2) Once the Falcons run through the scripted parts of their offense, the offensive play-calling becomes disjointed, and as soon as they get a lead, they try to sit on it and let the defense win the game for them (which won’t work because of 1) above). Still, the Falcons’ achievements this season are impressive and I’m proud of their accomplishments.

Let us not forget that the Falcons lost to Denver and NO—the former being at home—which are both very ordinary teams. But still, they have become much better team than anyone thought and I hope all of the overly positive thoughts end up with the right to say “I told you so.” But please don’t let Smith be the next Bobby Cox, who has not made a good decision since Greg and Tommy started showing their age.

Curious, in order to become one of them a person must exhibit a profound lack of acumen in regard to the English language, It is required by their order that they punctuate only once per post. Further, they must turn off spell-check and have a dozen or more incorrectly spelled and misused words. It’s all part of keeping it real assinine!

Hay Mr. Calhoun and Vick Supporter. You guys must have been up all night trading jabs. Interesting to read if you have nothing else to do on christmas eve. Keep it light guys. And blogfather… have you been smoking that funny stufF again?
I see it like this. Vick was a tremendously talented player, but I think he took his talent and his team for granted. He could learn alot from a QB like Matt Ryan. MR studies the game and applies it on the field. He sees the importance of winning as a team. Vick never learned this. He is a bonehead and a bonehead makes boneheaded decisions. In the process se ruined his life and nearly sucked the life out of his team. If he ever returns to the NFL he would simply do it again. That’s what boneheads do.
Fortunately, the Falcons now have people in the front office that place a premium on character. Believe me, It makes all the difference. This is how a team becomes a quality contender.
Great move Falcons. Congratulations on a great year!

You know, I have a comment for all the Vick Supporters out there who think that this barberic ape (Mike Vick) who had his chance at qb and literally blew the opportunity as starting qb of the Falcons AND wasted his fortune ($250 million) he lost every penny of it should now all of a sudden get redemption and be the starting qb of an NFL team. Vick wasted every dime of his fortune and is now in the same boat as the homeless bums you see on street corners across america who come flying up to your window soliciting money because they are too lazy to work. Im not saying Vick will end up like them because he is too gifted and too inteligent to settle for that lot in life. But dont hand me this crap that Vick being more gifted than Ryan because Vick is not as gifted as Ryan. Vick is most definitely a better runner than Ryan and Vick wouldnt have fumbled diving into the end zone the way Ryan did last Sunday. Sure, Vick brought the Falcons on the cusp of greatness to the championship game in Jim Moras first season as head coach of the Falcons, but Vick led the Falcons to CHOKE in that playoff game and the Falcons were eliminated in the playoffs that year. Now its Ryans turn and lets watch Ryan lead the Falcons to a superbowl title. I know that is whats forthcoming for the Falcons so lets just kick back, relax and enjoy the ride.

How did the Falcons beat the Vikings, one might ask? Well Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He runs, then drops gifts on the ground for the opposing team’s players to pick up.
Mike Vick
6 fumbles in 2001 (8 games), .22 of the team’s 27.
9 fumbles in 2002 (15 games), .36 of the team’s 25.
4 fumbles in 2003 (5 games), .18 of the team’s 22.
16 fumbles in 2004 (15 games), .58 of the team’s 26.
11 fumbles in 2005 (15 games), .42 of the team’s 26.
9 fumbles in 2006 (16 games), .50 of the team’s total 18.
Total 55 fumbles in his career (74 games). That is .743 per game.
In the 2007 season, the team fumbled a total of 18 times. Byron Leftwich played in 3 games and fumbled 6 times, .33 of the team’s total.
So far, in the 2008 season, the team has 17 fumbles, with Matt Ryan leading the way with 6 (15 games - only 1 lost), .35 of the team’s total.
In comparison, so far in the 2008 season Adrian Peterson has 8 fumbles (lost 4 - 15 games), with Tavaris Jackson 2 fumbles (1 lost - 8 games), which represents .77 of the Viking team 13 fumbles (.67 combined fumbles per game).
Moral of the story: You can rack up some big stats, but if you put the ball on the ground too many times you eventually end up watching from the sidelines.

Ryan = playoffs, zero playoff wins, NY Giants wipes his a* all over the field.

Although I wouldn’t turn down going to the Superbowl, not really sure I want to. Remember, this franchise has never had back to back winning seasons, or consecutive playoff seasons. That sucks! I would much prefer long term growth, to a quick rise in prominence. This is all happening a little faster than anyone expected, and I hope it does not diminish efforts at long term success. Just like the ‘98 team went on to a losing season in ‘99, I don’t want short term success. As frustrating as it was at times as a Braves fan to watch them reach the playoffs for what 13 consecutive seasons and win only 1 World Series, I now, given their current successes, was able to enjoy playoff baseball for 13 years! That didn’t suck. Current Falcons management seems to know what they are doing, with the exception of Arthur, and I hope that we get to see the Falcons and Matt Ryan clinch playoff berths for the next 13 years. And as an aside, although Vick was good at times, I am sooooo glad we got Ryan now. I just don’t think Vick was intelligent enough, which seems obvious given his current incarceration, to win consistently over a long stretch of time, especially once his legs gave out.

I, at the first of the season, thought there is no way that Matt Ryan would ever replace Mike Vick in Atlanta. I didn’t think he had the physical ability to throw or run when necessary. I did think he’d be a leader, but that wouldn’t be nearly good enough. BOY WAS I STUPID! Why is it that these stupid “Vick supporters” can’t admit they were wrong? Please AJC, block this Vick Supporter 2. This person is nothing but only a lover of Mike Vick; this person could care less about the success of the Falcons. This person forgets that Vick flipped off the fans because he couldn’t take fans’ reactions to his failures on the field. VS2, get over it, and join the REAL Falcons Fans, supporting the Falcons of the now and future.

THE GRINCH THAT STOLE PLAYOFFS
ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE LIVED THE
GREATEST ATHLETE TO EVER COME OUT OF
COLLEGE. HE HAD THE SPEED OF LIGHTNING
AND A ROCKET FOR AN ARM. HE WAS SO
BLESSED THAT HE WAS DEEMED FOR EARLY GREATNESS. OF ALL THE GREAT TALENT IN
THAT DRAFT HE WAS PICK NUMBER 1 OVERALL.
THAT CREATED QUITE AN ANGRY MOB OF
CERTAIN PROFILES OF FANS. TO SILENCE THE
ANGRY AND BIASED FANS, IN HIS FIRST FULL
YEAR OF STARTING FOR A TEAM WITH A 43-
YEAR HISTORY OF FAILURES, HE GUIDED THEM
TO THE PLAYOFFS IN JUST HIS FIRST FULL
SEASON. THIS IS A FRANCHISE THAT PRIOR
TO HIM ARRIVING, HAD ONLY WON 2-
DIVISIONAL TITLES & AND ONLY MADE IT TO 1-
CONFERENCE FINALS. TO MAKE HIS HEROICS
EVEN MORE LEGENDARY, HE WENT TO A
FREEZING GREEN BAY AND ACCOMPLISHED
SOMETHING THAT NO QUARTERBACK HAD EVER
DONE - HE BEAT THE IMMORTAL BRETT FAVRE
IN HIS OWN BACK YARD FOR THE FIRST TIME.
TO REWARD HIM FOR HIS EFFORTS, HE WAS
AWARDED THE LARGEST CONTRACT IN THE
HISTORY OF THE NFL, WHICH WAS HIGHER THAN
THE IMMORTAL BRETT FAVRE, TOM BRADY AND
PEYTON MANNING. THIS CREATED AN OUT-RAGE
WITH THE CERTAIN PROFILE OF FAN BASE.
HE DIDN’T LET THIS CONTRACT GO TO HIS
HEAD. A YEAR LATER HE BROUGHT THE
FRANCHISE JUST THEIR 3RD DIVISIONAL TITLE
AND A MOST IMPRESSIVE (2ND) CONFERENCE
FINAL. THEN HE WAS DEEMED OVERRATED AND
WAS CALLED RACIAL NAMES, WHILE TRYING TO
BRING THIS LOWLY FRANCHISE A SUPERBOWL
RING, ALTHOUGH HE WAS NOT BLESSED WITH A
FRONT OFFICE THAT WAS COMMITTED TO
WINNING, UNLIKE THIS NEW FRONT OFFICE WHO
COINCIDENTALLY WAS MAGICALLY BROUGHT
TOGETHER AFTER HE WAS OFF THE PLAYING
FIELD. A COINCIDENT? PERHAPS, BUT IN
DOING SO, IN SHOWING HIM THE ULTIMATE
SLAP IN THE FACE, THEY LABELED AN AVERAGE
PLAYER “THE NEW FACE OF THE FRANCHISE,
THEREFORE A SPELL WAS CAST ON THE
FRANCHISE. THERE WILL BE NO PLAYOFFS
UNTIL HE RETURNS TO THE NFL. SO THE TALE
CONTINUES………..

Vicksucker, you left out some things. Chandler took the Falcons to a Super Bowl before the dog killer was in the NFL. The supposed prejudices of the fan base had nothing to do with the sorry mess vick was on/off the field. The new front office brought in a new quarterback because they had to. vick is unable to commute from the confines of Leavenworth Federal Prison on the weekends. By the way, there will be playoffs. And there will be a Super Bowl for the Falcons. matt Ryan, in his rookie year, has already passed for more yardage, and not by just a little bit, than Vick did in any of his seven miserable seasons. vick is suspended for felonious acts and he’ll remain suspended for at least one more year! You left all that out of your illiterate scrawling. Merry Christmas b***!

I’m just curious…does anyone still take the time to read Jockstrap 2’s rambling, elongated posts anymore? If so please give me a brief synopis if he has said anything different since the second week of the season i.e. MV7 great, MR2 bust, all the current black Falcon players are great.

I dont think anyone cares. The fact that you could support someone who drowns and electrocutes dogs is sick. Most people wouldnt but some people out there are sick in the head. They never really had any morals nor do they have a moral compass. The falcons of the past won IN SPITE of Vick not because of him. He was awful most of the time. Its sad that some people are so racist they will never support a white QB in Atlanta.

Clods, what is coming is a trip to a half-way house and a one year suspension from the NFL for your felonious hero. After that he may be signed by some team but I doubt it. The guy has proved himself a liar, a cruel and criminal killer of animals and a poor quarterback. Why would anyone want this walking, talking, pile of excrement on their team?

Believe it or not, this pinhead does know the name of the current Atlanta quarterback. The “Leaf” is his simplistic idea of an insult. Frankly, I’m surprised he spelled it correctly.

No way the Panthers are losing to the Aints, so plan on being the 5 seed. The Falcons might get a win vs Arizona, but after that the Giants or Panthers will put an end to their season.

If the Falcons get a home playoff game is it actually going to be a sellout? Maybe thats why the “Red Out” is a good idea, hides the empty red seats well.

I certainly hope the Falcons can progress up to at least the Championship game, but in order to do so, they are going to have to make some changes. They can’t depend on first half scoring to get them through the game…They HAVE to take more chances, instead of taking a knee at the end of a quarter, they HAVE to implement more ball “stripping” strategies, like the Bucs, to make game changing defensive plays. They’re going to HAVE to take more chances downfield with the long pass. Seems this is non-existant in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The play-offs are a relentless, and un-forgiving, do or die event, and if you slip, your gone….

To the VickSupporters and Vicksuckers of the world: If you love Mike Vick so much why dont you fight dogs in your backyard or your living room so you can join him in prison and leave the rest of us normal people alone. You are tormenting us with your insidious BLOGS that are completely ridiculous and nonsensical. A blogger made the point that even if Mike Vick gets out in time for the 2009 season, Roger Goddell will probably suspend Vick for the entire 2009 season and possibly 2010 so that Vick wont return to the grid iron until he is 31 years old and probably washed up anyway. The Mike Vick train has come and passed. That train was derailed months ago and will never start up again. So please take your Mike Vick baggage, memorbillia and memories and dump them into the chattahoochie river so that we can all have peace of mind on these BLOGS and so that we wont lose our sanity. Thank you.

The Panthers will probably lose in New orleans and if they play the Falcons again you’ll see the same result as last time. The Falcons hung 45 points on them and they will do it again. Ryan has thrown for 3280 yards through fifteen games. Vick, in seven years, never reached the three thousand yard mark in passing. He sucks and so do the Vicksuckers that worship him. He’s done boys! He will never play in the NFL again!

If Vick comes back,I would love to see him as a return specialist or a receiver. He could definitely do some damage and he is in no position to bargain to remain a QB to stay in the NFL. Too bad the Falcons could not benefit from such a move because he would be a PR nightmare.
In any case, it has been a joy to watch this year’s Falcons but the true test will be next year when they won’t be sneaking up on anyone. but I think they’ll rise to the challenge.

When I was watching the Titans game last week, I realized their sideline, costumed mascot would be MUCH more appropriate to reflect the demographics of Atlanta than those of Nashville.

The question is not whether this team can get to the Super Bowl. Thats been done. The question is whether or not this cursed franchise can have a winning season next year thus achieve two consecutive wining seasons which has never been done. We are a year away from that answer.
