This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

UGA fans become disgruntled bystanders
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia Tech is still whooping it up. Nick Satan and the Urban Crier are bringing their teams to town to play for the SEC title. Has there ever been a worse moment to be a Bulldog?
Via e-mail, I asked Georgia fans of my acquaintance how they’re feeling and, being particularly nasty, for whom they’ll be rooting Saturday. Here’s what they wrote.
Eric Zeier, former Georgia quarterback and color commentator on radio broadcasts: “We have won a couple of SEC championships recently and finished No. 2 in the country last year. We have one of the best coaches in the country in Mark Richt and he has brought the program to a level where we are mentioned on a national scale. With that said, there is definitely some disappointment in the way this season finished … But it is still great to be a Georgia Bulldog!”
Vince Dooley, statuesque Georgia legend: “It would have been much, much better if we had beaten Tech and were playing in the SEC Championship game.”
Damon Evans, athletics director: “Our goal every year is to play in the conference championship game, so there is a degree of disappointment. However, we have a chance for a 10-win season, so that’s what the Bulldogs need to concentrate on.”
Jeff Dantzler, Athens talk-show host: “To have two halves and one quarter just unfold in disastrous fashion and have all three of those foes in the same city in the heart of the Bulldog nation is tough, but the sun will shine on Georgia again soon.”
Neil “Hondo” Williamson, tailgate show host: “From a macro-sense, nothing much has changed. Tech won. Hearty congratulations and best wishes. For all the talk-show junkies and internet kvetchers who believe that they witnessed some cataclysmic change in the universe a la Jon Landau’s ‘discovery’ of Bruce Springsteen, they need to relax. Tech won a close one. We’d won seven straight prior. I like our program, staff, facilities, players on a national basis and thus feel quite comfortable with our standing and direction state-wide, too.”
Zeier: “As a Dawg, you’re probably putting on the crimson sweater this weekend and yelling ‘Roll, Tide!’ “
Evans: “I’m just for the team that will best represent our conference in the national championship game.”
Bill King, author of the Junkyard Blawg on AJC.com: “I’ve heard more than one Dawg fan mutter, ‘Isn’t there a way for both of them to lose?’ … It would bother me less for Alabama to win. I’m not overly fond of Saban, but I can’t stand the Urban Crier. And we have to live with Florida every year [unlike the Tide] and they were so obnoxious after their national championship that I would love not to have to see that again.”
Mary Gerakitis, Georgia grad who is married to Richard Gerakitis, the Auburn fan who is also my lawyer: “I got an e-mail from Helen Alston, my Sunday school teaching partner for the past 20 years. She won’t be at Sunday school this week. She is a huge Florida Gator, and she thinks she and her Florida-loving cousins will be celebrating. I have to say Helen is very nice, but I’ve had to hold my tongue when she shows up at Sunday school draped in orange and blue, wearing Gator jewelry. In the stories of Noah’s Ark, she goes on and on about gators being the best animals. I don’t really think it’s right to put such ideas into the heads of our 4-year-olds.
“As a Dawg, there’s just no way I can pull for Florida. Especially not when Urban Meyer calls time out to run up the score - and not when they’ve overindulged in championships during the last few years. However, in being faithful to my Auburn-loving husband, I can’t pull for Alabama, either. So I told Helen that we’re not pulling for anybody. We’ll be disgruntled bystanders.”

Why are UGA fans still mad about the timeout Meyer took at the end of the 4th quarter? Most of the UGA team danced all over the their end zone in 2007…during the game! T** for tat. Maybe UGA should have actually played some defense and their first round caliber offensive players should have done something so Meyer would actually have used the timeout for a real game situation. Those who live in glass houses…

Part of me wants to see Florida beat Alabama so that Alabama will have a SEC loss and be on the same footing as Florida, but then I think it would look better for the SEC for Alabama to remain undefeated and beat whoever in the national championship. That would put a feather in the cap of the SEC. SO……ROLL TIDE!!!

sour grapes Mark Bradley? Why does everything in Atlanta have to be about Georgia? This is the perfect example …an article about how Dawg fans feel about the SEC title game with two other schools. Give me a break! It’s not about you this time.
I think there is another school in town called GT that actually won in Athens this year. Fortunately, I don’t think all Dawg fans are as self absorbed and slanted as the AJC seems to be. Georgia does not own the dome and the two best teams in the conference are rightfully there. Frankly, the game should probably alternate at other sites around the conference. After all this is the SEC not the Georgia league.

Obviously, there’s several huge differences between the celebration and the timeouts. The celebration was to encourage a team that sometimes has no spirit to get pumped up and enjoy playing football. And clearly from the look on Richt’s face, it got out of hand, and was not what he expected. He also apologized. Urban Meyer called time out for one reason only: To hurt Richt, his volunteer players, and the Georgia fan base. One move was callous and obnoxious, the other was calculated and mean spirited. I don’t want my coach ever dropping to that kind of level - win or no win.

Nick Saban is slightly more tolerable than his counterpart at Florida (don’t even want to write that jerk’s name) and John Parker Wilson (though he messes around with his hair too much) is quite a bit more tolerable than Tebow—so I will be rooting for BAMA. Having said that, I will then hope that BAMA (should they win) or Florida (should they win) have their butts handed to them by Oklahoma. Go Sooners!!!

You gain National Prominence by winning or competing in the National Championship games or at least being in contention for one. Georgia hasn’t sniffed the BCS in the BCS era. To be frank, Georgia is simply a SEC regional program.

SOOO sorry to hear so many whinning Dawg fans. After the debacle against one of the weak ACC teams last week I’d think things in Athens would be pretty quiet.
On the matter of the time out in this years game in Jax, it didn’t make it on the national broadcast, but the GA coach flipping off the Gators with a middle finger nose scratch was as bush league as it gets and everyone in FL saw it, so get used to the last minute time outs!
As a long time Gator Fan with 12 annual tickets to the SEC CHampionship game, I hope you keep your current coach for many years to come. There have been few coaches in the SEC who have gotten less from more talent than Mark Richt, other than maybe Ray Goff.
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow ATL!

Hey Kris G,
The real difference between what Richt did and what Meyer did is that Richt’s move is called “Unsportsmanlike Conduct”. Meyer’s move was perfectly legal. Now, you can try to get into the psyche of both coaches and determine what their motives are, but they will simply be your best guess.
If you’re a UGA fan, you agree with Richt. The rest of the country thought it was shallow, bogus, and a good way to get kids hurt. The only thing preventing a riot after UGA’s celebration was the restraint of the UF players.
Meanwhile, Meyer called Timeout so that he could get his third string tailback some more “game experience”. Sounds legit to me! :)

Being a “bystander” is something the Bulldog Nation might as well get used to. CMR, while a great guy, can’t recruit OR coach like “satan” and “crier.” Atlanta will be hosting a lot of Gator/Tide SEC Championship games over the next few years.
While I hope Bama wins on Saturday, I am happy with a 12-0 regular season under St. Nick in only his second year.

The Florida-Alabama SEC title game, as I’m sure both sides know, was indeed a fixture in the 1990s. But that was when Georgia couldn’t get out of its own way. Now that Georgia has been to three championship games, I’m guessing seeing Florida there hurts even worse.
But that’s just me. And, as we all know, I’m often wrong.

The difference between Urban Crybaby who talks in the third person and our coach is like night and day. First of all, after all is said and done, MOST Dawg fans will gladly admit that the endzone celebration was a horrible idea. We laughed at the time and of course were happy to win the game, but it was not a brilliant plan. Secondly, CMR apologized to Crybaby, and wrote a letter of apology to the SEC Commissioner. Thirdly, I feel sorry for Urban that he has held all that hatred and the grudge and in his own words, “Urban Meyer will never forget this.” He needs to get over it and move on. Lastly, I would rather be a Dawg with our coach any day than have to claim the totally classless Urban Meyer. And yes, in the past, I have always hoped the SEC won theri games, especially the East, but I will never root for the Gators in my life until the Whining Baby is gone. All the years that we were being beat by Spurrier were unpleasant, but I respect SOS, which is more than Dawggirl4ever (notice the third person language),can say about their present coach. It’s pretty easy to measure the long-term success trends for these programs. Which have competed in more total SEC championships? UF: 9, ALA: 6, UT: 5, LSU: 4, ARK: 3, GA: 3. So, if UGA can ever out-pace ARK’s appearances, they’ll really be somebody one day.
As for supporting the “brand” that is the SEC, your Florida Gators were chanting “SEC, SEC…” when they licked Ohio State in ‘06, just as the LSU Tigers did again last year. As Kirk Herbstreit pointed out, you wouldn’t hear that done by teams representing any other conference in America. (Ever hear a “Pac-10” chant?)
Don’t you Dawgs get that supporting your own conference in national title games enhances your program’s stature, too? I guess UF, LSU, ALA and UT will have to continue to do the heavy lifting for the rest of those still struggling to beat their ACC opponents. So pathetic.

Roll Tide, Rather have an undefeated team representing the SEC than a team with a loss. Also think Saban is a better gameday coach than Meyer is, don’t see Gators running wild on Saban’s defense, Just my opinion though, gators may score 100. Not disgruntled either Mark, media put a big target on UGA picking them no 1 at the beginning of the season, fans and players bought into it, maybe next year we’ll start out ranked 20th or so and give our team something to work toward instead of something to drop from. Media saw last years win over Auburn and Ga. Tech along with a Sugar Bowl victory and were impressed by it enough to rank us that no 1 but, looking back those wins were not that impressive. Hopefully we’ll win our bowl game and have another 10 win season which is not bad at all. Mark did you happen to see the Alabama Auburn game last week? Notice with Alabama up 29 to 0 in the 4th quarter and Alabama’s punter shanked a punt off the side of his foot for about a 15 yard punt. Nick Saban jumped all over him on the sideline like he had stole something. His players seem to pay a lot of attention to him though whatever his coaching tactics are. Whatever our team is lacking that keeps them from beating the Teams like Alabama or Fla. I’m sure CMR will figure it out and do whatever he has to. Little dissapointed but not disgruntled.

Thanks for the SEC title game appearance stats. That’s kind of funny. I didn’t know Arky had been to the seccg more than UGA which placed 6th in number of appearances. At bama when we win a bowl game we also chant SEC, SEC!!! I would think anybody in the conference would pull for the SEC team but apparently not. Good luck Saturday. Seems like old times all over again. I reckon we will be seeing a lot of each other in the future championship games just like in the 90s.

dawggirl4ever: As RayG accurately states, my facts were correct. After all, we’re all living in the modern era now. A championship game is required to win the conference title, and UGA’s simply not been competitive in the Goff/Donnan/Richt era. Sorry for this breaking news.
As for your reference to Urban’s timeouts in Jacksonville, it’s a pretty simple concept. The Dawgs can leave the field when the Gators tell them they can leave the field….This is what Dawg ownership is all about.

I never did understand why UGA fans would hate BAMA so much. I know some of them say that its because we are a bunch of obnoxious fans or rednecks or we all live in trailers or some kind of petty insult. But then everybody in the sec can pretty much say those same thing abouts each other all day long so that can’t be the reason.
I get the Florida thing because its their most important rival. But we aren’t even rivals with UGA. We play maybe twice every 6 years and our big rivals are Aub, Tenn, and to a lesser degree LSU. UGA is just like an Ole Miss to us. Just someone we want to beat if we have to play them.
I would imagine UGA looks at us the same way since their 3 main rivals are UF, GT, and UT though I’m not sure I know what order the 3 rate. I would think South Carolina would be a bigger rival than Bama to UGA.
Anyway, its a shame to see a lot of the UGA fans that wish both teams could lose or that the winner gets whupped by OKLAHOMA. I realize its not all the UGA fans but I’m just surprised by the mumber of them that would pull against a fellow sec team in a national title game. That’s a shame cause I just can’t imagine pulling against an sec team in the national title game.

That’s what we’re hoping for is those classic games of the 90s that Stallings and Spurrier had. The 24-23 game in 95 I think was one of the best games ever.
If we lose Sat. we won’t be that disappointed since its only year 2 under Saban and overall the talent level is still is a year or 2 away. We’ll definitely be pulling for the gators in the biggun should you beat us. Signing off

Just read these blogs and it is easy to understand why everyone in the SEC dislikes the Gators. Complete arrogance and smugness that Gator fans learned from the master, Steve Spurrier. Hold on now. I see the dawg fans r mighty upset about Urban calling them timeouts with a minute to go. That’s it. I’m flagging the gatuhs 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.
But in the interest of fairness I reckons I gots to flag the dawgs too. Where to start? Mmmmmhhh! Okedoke.
We’ll start with flagging Richt for his players rushing the end zone after the dawgs 1st td last year. Then we gots to flag them for another 3 or 4 unsportsmanlike penalties later in the 1st qtr after the 1st one.
But we also gots to flag the dawgs for stomping on and dancing on the Vandy logo after beating Vandy last year. Wait a minute! Who in the heck stomps on Vandy’s logo after beating Vandy of all people? I guess the dawgs do. So in addition to another unsportsmanlike I’m going to invoke criminal sanctions. I’m bringing in the stupid laws and I’m gonna fine the dawgs 100K for stomping on the Vandy logo. Man is that stupid. I mean who stomps on the vandy logo after beating vandy?
Next I gots to fine Knowsho and the whole dawgs sidelines for dancing and showboating against Auburn in the waning moments of a game. What a classless bunch of punkaZZes.
I would fine the dawgs for all the myriad number of times they exhibit that classless behavior after beating a weaker opponent but there’s one problem with dat. Da fine would be so high that now UGA would be asking the Feds for a bailout.
We done seen enough bailouts so UGAs punishment is that they have to stay in the same division with the mighty gators for eternity. And NO, you cannot get out of your traditional game with the jackets now that they are whupping and shredding yo hapless D. You classless hypocritical small time wannabe losers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t understand the problem. Florida has Meyer who MAY be playing for his 2nd National Championship in 3 years, Alabama has Nick Saban who may be playing for a Title in just his 2nd year and Georgia has the Reverand Mark Richt. You seem very happy with a coach who has NEVER played for a National Championship and who has gone 2-7 against Florida since he arrived. It must be remembered he EVEN managed to go 1-2 against Ron Zook who was can’t even pronounce the name of the school that he currently coaches. You seem to be very satisfied with a man who `seems better suited—and more interested—in performing missionairy work in Africa—THE CONTINENT—and the former Soviet Union. The Reverand is a fine young man who I can see helping President Carter with Habitats for Humanity. Urban Meyer and Nick Saban will probably not be engaged in ancillary projects while in the employ of entities employing them to coach football.Meyer and Bellichek are really good buddies because they have similiar motivations and personalities. If they weren’t football coaches, I would choose the Rev to be my neighbor, however, as things stand now, I’m choosing Meyer and Saban to coach a football team if I want to win those games where they present you crystal trophies. Saban, Meyer, Stoops, Carroll, Tressel, Miles, Tuberville, Bellichek —-I really don’t know much about their religious beliefs. I do know something about their ability to get to A big game. Their religious beliefs are their own business. If they want to share that is fine, but is important to recognize they are being paid millions of dollars to coach football teams and when accepting that level of monetary reward it would be hypocritical not to pour your best efforts into achieving results for your employer. If you are not achieving those results, I would think some introspection is in order, even evaluating your staff.

What a difference a season (or two) makes. Last year the Tide and Gay-turds lost 10 games between them. Now, the ‘experts’ seem to be predicting that their meeting in the SEC Championship Game will become an annual rite. I guess the Dawgs and the rest of the SEC should just quit playing (or join the ACC, which no doubt will be ruled by the Thundering Nerd offense until CPJ ditches Tech for a wanting Big 12 school). Georgia may very well lose Stafford and/or Moreno, but we have the ability (thanks to years of outstanding recruiting) to re-load and I see both Fla and Ala sustaining substantial lossees (from important Seniors along the lines to the early entry of several juniors like Harvin and Andre Smith). Yes, the Dawgs will rise again…just give it another year.

Are there any other Dawg fans in Birmingham, AL who are really torn here? Sure all things being equal, you’ve gotta want UF to lose and lose badly, but y’all in Georgia don’t have to live with these bammers. They have to be the most obnoxious, entitled pricks on the planet. I know its selfish, but my life will be better if Bama loses. I know you may not understand, but at least empathize with those of us who have to live and work with people who think that Bama is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega, of college football. When I lived in Georgia, I liked the Tide, but living here has caused me to have a real hatred for them. They were bad when they sucked, but now that they are winning its so much worse. Its so bad I’ve actually hoped Auburn would win. Auburn!?! Yes Auburn, that’s just how bad it is over here.
Anyway, I guess we can at least agree to pull for whoever the hell plays in the SEC winner in Miami? BOOMER SOONER, BABY!!!!! You people out there who think we have to pull for the SEC in those games make me sick. My favorite non-UGA game of all-time was the 1996 Fiesta Bowl with Neb. v. UF. Yes that was even better than the 44-0 beating we put on ‘em in 1982 just because it was such a bigger stage for their total and complete beatdown. Those who think that OK vs. TT was a incredible beatdown of a high ranking team, should have seen, or perhaps remember more fondly, the beat down of the Gators in the desert.
And as far as pulling for the SEC teams to do well; sure as long as its not USC, Auburn, UF, UT or Bama. Otherwise, I’m a SEC loyalist.

Glad to see all the uga-ly fans pulling for Bama to take care of business that the mutts haven’t been able to take care of for a couple of decades now. The correct teams are in the SEC Championship, Tide and Gators.
Remember how the Gators used to have to say “wait til next year”? Thanks to the GREAT STEVE SPURRIER for making that the dawg chant and for URBAN MEYER for shoving it down your throat. It’s gotta be really bitter with all the smack you guys talked for 9 months. I guess that’s why you hate Meyer and Tebow so much…them making you wear the loser suit and all.
Mark Richt is a terrific coach and a better human being, Matt Stafford is a WARRIOR…uga-ly is lucky to have ‘em. They don’t deserve fans like you guys who desert the team in the 3rd quarter when losing.

Definitely able to discern how far we have fallen when the only satisfaction many derive is from picking against someone in a game that we aren’t good enough to play in. Well, I won’t feel better no matter who wins or who loses. We appear to be so far from national prominence as to not even be a blip on the college football radar. Now if Meyer and Saban leave that will give us hope, but we still have a guy who looks like he should be calling roll at the Boy Scout Jamboree. We either address this differential in coaching abilities or we will be right back here next December reading a silly article about who is rooting for who. WHO Cares?

I’m NEW here. Meyer won a National Championship in 06, Took a Utah team to a BCS Bowl in 04 and may play for another National Championship in 08. What actually does Urban have to cry about?? If he is a “Crier”, I just wish my Michigan State coach had those tough of standards. I must be different. When MSU can’t hang with Michigan—Usually—-I just kept my mouth shut until I have something to legitimately talk about. Must be different here. Have only been in Atlanta 2 months. I would suggest you beat this team on a regular basis and then you will be able to read the frivilous stuff coming back from the other side. And I guarantee you will be as amused by it as the Florida people are by this crap about “Next Year”.

Dawgpound: On those rare occasions when UGA beats UF, there are no more obnoxious fans than the Dawgs. It’s just hard to remember because you all win in Jax so seldomly. Instead, UGA just inflates themselves into obnoxious preseason No. 1 status by defeating…Hawaii. And the coach and fans argued that UGA belonged in last year’s NC over LSU, which actually won its division. And did you ever notice how the two programs that will play in the SEC CG on Saturnday did not spend the preseason hyping themselves.
So, who’s obnoxious?

Dawgmaster, Were you even alive the last time Georgia won a National Championship? A Who’s Who of Collegiate powers have won titles since Larry Munson last screamed like an idiot about a beautiful 91 yard pass play—Check the teams Miami, FSU, Florida, Texas, USC, LSU, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State, Oklahoma, Hell-Brigham Young!!, and I can’t recall the others. BUT I do recall—NO!!!! Georgia!1 So Sad!! So Pitiful! And now an impish, choir boy coach with all the intestinal fortitude of a 3 year old screaming for a pacifier. Oh, Make no doubt about it. You are blanked!! Because you will keep this petulant PUNK until he’s disappointed you at least 5 more times. His best job of coaching may have been when he took that soft throwing left hander and the under sized DE to an SEC Championship, But as I’ve said—SEC Championships aren’t National Championships, but then again ONLY 3 of those since they started deciding it on the field in Alabama. By the way, for all of you who knock Tebow’s NFL ability, just reflect on the great careers of Green and Polack.

UF and GT have a lot in common: both beat UGA, UM, and FSU soundly. Mark, Go do some missionairy work. It really is your calling. A tough collegiate football coach does not get botoxed up in the offseason. You were the protege of the senile demented one in Tally. You were mentored by a guy who flew up to Colorado and in defense of Bill McCartney’s Colorado team implied a sexual abuse victim may have been complicit. Your mentor also tried to get a victim of one of his players to “maybe”drop charges. Your mentor “Prayed” for misdemeanors for players involved with crimes. Your mentor recruited a placekicker who was so ugly and disgusting that he resorted to date rape drugs. Your mentor’s “best Player” compiled a 0.00GPA in his last semester at Florida Stare which resulted in state of Florida enacting The Deion Sanders Law “Requiring an athlete be ENROLLED to participate in sports”. Marcus, you lie down with dogs you get fleas, and the fleas from this guy are hard to shake. Mark, you have NO chance against guys like Meyer and Saban. They will spit your scrawny butt out and leave you for the trailer park riff raff to pick up in their collection duties. You don’t even have the GUTS to terminate a defensive coordinator who if he is around long enough may oversee a program giving up most points in Georgia history. Mark, I guess you still have some people fooled by a 9 win season that was accumulated against teams that would have not challenged in the WAC, BUT they will grow sick of you as it becomes more and more apparent that the 28 year drought may grow into 50 years if you and a “protege” are allowed to continue.

Enjoy the SECCG Dawg Fans. Take a look at what REAL teams with real coaches look like. Not a bunch of mouth running punks that think a tackle 20 yards downfield merits a long speech to the opposing sideline and then gets burned on the next play. You got just what you deserved last Saturday and you got it because of your arrogance and holier than thou attitude. My my how the cockiness of summer has turned into the cold hard reality that you’re just not what you thought you were. Better yet, it’s going to get worse next year. Eric is correct in that Richt has brought the Georgia program to prominence on the national level—for player arrests, penalties, bad sportsmanship, and on the field lollygagging. It is astounding that rational human beings would approve of sending the whole team on the field to frolick after a touchdown and disapprove of a coach using time outs at the end of the game. I guess that “rational” is the operative word. Richt’s bad sportsmanship will haunt Georgia for a long time.

I don’t believe for a minute that we’ll be seeing any National Titles under CMR’s leadership. He fields a team that is consistently inconsistent. Some coaches take marginal talent and make the most of it. Does anyone believe that we get the best of the talent in Athens? California Cool does a good job of recruiting and I think we can continue to expect to win 7-9 games a year and go to a bowl. But beyond that, forget it. More and more Dawg fans are waking up to that fact. Mark is going to quit doing those Ford truck commercials and start doing those Secret antiperspirant commercials instead. Even when we’re getting destroyed on the field, you never see him sweat. When he’s talking into that head set and we’re getting stomped, I’m never sure if he’s making changes or ordering McDonalds’…….Ugh.

Saw a game on tv last nite that reminded me of the UGA team this season. Lousiville v Rutgers. Louisville was wearing red/black/white uniforms. The look and play darn well looked like UGA clones. Lets see where to start, I’ll just be random, so here goes. 1. false start penalties 2. lost fumble on the 1 yard line denying a score 3. Next venture in the red zone, dang, a missed field goal. 4. A 6 foot 8 inch tight end with hands of stone 5. routine sacks of quarterback 6. coach standing on sideline with utter look of shock/amazement on his face 7. missed tackles on most plays 8. Need I go on? I turned off the game in the 3rd quarter, much like I did UGA games too. I think the final score was something like 70-14, Rutgers playing the cheerleaders to finish. Yep, Louisville looked just like the dawgs, and was it ever sad. The only thing sadder right now, is looking at the dawgs next year. Will it be any different? or worse…………

I used to work with a company in Alabama and the people of Alabama are very nice folks. There are several comments concerning Richt’s suitability for missionary work. Here is the reality: Richt took a number of players to Central America last summer. They were gone for a total of five days, two of which were actually spent working on houses. Richt then took off for Iraq, which is admirable. He visited injured soldiers in Germany and met with troops in Iraq. That’s good. However, during that time he signed his name to 500 pound bombs with the note, “finish the drill.” That is the sum of his missionary work. Signing bombs that will be used to kill human beings is not very Christian, neither is the violent behavior of his players, for which Richt stands back and winks. In my opinion, Richt is no more religious than his pappy down at FSU, who uses Christianity as a recruiting tool. I wish Richt would go back where he belongs.

Though it certainly was a dissapointing year I don’t think that UGA has anyting to worry about. We will be just fine with our stable and reliable coaching staff. Tech won a game for the first time in seven years. It’s going to happen. Floridan and Alabama just had the right breaks and had better teams this year. But, no self respecting Georgia fan can ever root for Gators against another SEC team. If they win and go to the NC game then I’ll root for then while cursing them at the same time. As a Vol, I have my heartburn about all of the teams mentionsed above…however a few acknowledgements.
Are Gator fans obnoxious, YUP, but they back up their swagger more often than not.
Are the Tide fans okay…YUP, except for when they act like Fulmer caused their suspensions rather than the blatant cheating of their low life, now-deceased donor. Not sad they did it, only mad they got caught.
Dawgs…man, you guys gained an arrogance in a few years that it took decades for the perennial powers to get. The Dawgs capacity for “self-delusion” is pretty astounding. That is why so many other team fans rag on you so much. There are still Dawg fans who think that even after getting totally creamed by FL, and AL, and letting GT put up 45 points on their “world class defense”, still think they should be in the NC and they are being “picked on”. Take off those Black and Rose colored glasses, please.
And for the record, yes my Vols would have to improve dramatically just to really suck…at least I admit it. And also for the record, tomorrow should be an absolutely outstanding ballgame of two really great teams.

hey fatgirl, i mean dawggirl…dunno which is worse…lol
Meyer is dirty? You should shut your mouth if all you can spew is nonsense. You probably don’t like SOS either. Truth is, you would love either one of ‘em if they coached at UGA. The reason y’all hate them is easy to see with a simple look at the record since 1990. When Dooley was running up the score on the Gators, you hypocrits thought he was God and that Jax was just fine.
SPEAKING OF JAX, were you there…did you leave your team in the middle of the 3rd quarter like EVERY uga-ly fan other than the band and the players parents? Talk about dispicable, that’s the measure of it. Your players are getting their tails whipped but they are out there giving it their all and their fans desert them. Even the f$u fans didn’t do that to their team. In a driving rainstorm last week while they were getting spanked…they supported their team to the end…y’all deserted yours on a beautiful day.
Shoulda seen the look on the players’ parents’ faces…they were p**. Not at Meyer or the Gators, at the sorry fans their kids were playing for.
Pathetic.

Don’t talk about fans leaving early. The fans stood and applauded the entire UGA team at halftime of the Bama game when they were down 31-0, or whatever it was. There was an entire article written about how more teams should be supportive like that, so maybe you shouldn’t be so quick as to run off at the mouth.
And no, I wasn’t in JAX. I had to work, thank you very much.
Since you don’t know me, I’d refrain from assuming what I would or wouldn’t do. And judging from your spelling and grammar, it appears the Florida education is well paying off. The intelligence just jumps off the page, I’m sure the middle-schoolers are in awe.

Please don’t talk about things you have no idea about. Tell us about your walk with the Lord and what you have done for your fellow brothers and sisters? Just curious.
Yes, this is a football blog. Don’t go after a mans character. Especially if you have no idea on what you are talking about. Let’s keep it to football. Upset about his coaching abilities this past season? That I understand. me too.

The thing that concerns me most at the present time is the article I read about Rodney Garner throwing his hat in the ring for the Auburn head coaches job. I admire him for wanting to advance his career but is it wise for him to be out attempting to recruit ‘blue chippers’ for Georgia when he has Auburn on his mind…duh? Much has been written about Mark Richt’s loyalty to his assistant coaches and I have always believed that loyalty was, or should be a two way street. If the man wants to politic for any head coaching position, fine….but for goodness sake, keep him away from our future recruits at least until he has made up his mind.

I usually like Alabama and pull for them except when they play Georgia. But I can’t stand Nick Saban, the only coach in America who can sustain a “genius” and “best coach in America” reputation despite a failed NFL resume’ and a college resume’ that’s dotted with 4, 5 and 6 loss seasons (check it out sometime - the guy has had more than his share of mediocre seasons).
But I wouldn’t pull for the Gators if they were playing Red China and Osama bin Laden was the opposing coach. Any school that took 59 years to win an SEC title should be forever humbled, but those SOBs were loud and obnoxious even before Spurrier came back to town in 1990. At least on Saturday, my favorite team is Bama and my favorite coach is (cough, gag) Nick Saban. Roll Tide.
It’s still great to be a Gator Hater!

I can talk about uga-ly fans leaving all i want, I was at the game and it was pathetic to see the GA side empty at the end of the second quarter.
Don’t know you, and don’t want to. You talk trash and no fact and fans like your buddy WTF who hates Tim Tebow are just as imbecilic as those who deride Richt…which is mainly uga-ly fans.

Nugene…are you out of your mind??? An assistant has a shot at a HC job at a top tier school and you think he shouldn’t be doing it??
The opportunity to advance should be a first priority for distinguished assistants. To suggest that someone should stay loyal and be an assistant rather than pursue and opportunity and/or that they shouldn’t perform their current job if they want to advance is bizarre.

Did anyone else hear the commentators at the beginning of the FL-SC game? The coaches had chairs at the back of the sidelines and had to move them because of all the filth spewing from the mouths of the Gators. Very classy. So please don’t throw stones when you live in a glass house. As someone else mentioned, Richt apologized several times about the endzone celebration and talked to the press about what a stupid decision he made. He is not afraid to own up to his mistakes and at least he’s not a liar! The celebration was not a deliberate move to try and humiliate anyone, but desperation from a coach trying to find a way to motivate, which most of Bulldog Nation also realizes was not a smart move or one that we laud.

Blackberry Cobbler probably beats his kids with a camo belt every time they do something wrong.
What do you suggest should be done outside of normal repercussions for mistakes (running, up-downs, etc)? These kids playing football aren’t Pavlov dogs that you can instill “conditioned reflex’s” in. They are humans that make mistakes. However, these kids are Georgia Bulldawgs who are going to learn from their mistakes this year and whip some UF and Tech tail next year!

Richt might be Mother Teresa in his private life, however, he is paid state money to be a football coach and build character in young men who are supposed to be college students. During Richt’s tenure at Georgia, his boys have consistently led the SEC in player arrests that include rape, auto theft, assault, drunk driving, fire arms charges, and the newest criminal activity, pillaging hospital plants. Two years ago, a Georgia player beat a high school student senseless and urinated on him, which cost the player a one-game suspension. Richt teaches his players to violate the rules of the game by sending them on the field to dance and taunt the opposing team. It was appalling to see photos of Richt wearing a Georgia logo signing bombs with clever slogans in Iraq. He talks the talk, but as a football coach, his actions give him away.

I am a huge Dawg fan and am not disgruntled. The defense prevented us from being at the Dome this weekend, and that’s just a fact. Time to move on. Same goes for Tech—of course they are still celebrating. The only thing they have to live for is beating Georgia, and finally after 7 years they did it—barely (beating a very average GA team). You can’t blame them… they don’t know how to handle a winning season!

One question for the Gators: what the did you talk about before Tebow, and what will you talk about after he leaves? I live in Jacksonville and the coverage he gets is ridiculous. For those who think this is a “neutral” site for the Ga-fla game I suggest reading the local paper and listening to Jacksonville talk radio. I hope to hell the game moves to a home and home schedule. Would the Gators think the game was “neutral” if it was played in Atlanta, and they had to fly there while UGA bused 70 miles? If you haven’t guessed by now,Rollllll Tide! Gators all suffer from selective memory - they choose to forget everything before 1990. Check the record book, you jerks - UGA STILL lead the series!!

He’s the wrong coach, in the wrong sport, at the wrong time, in the wrong stadium, with the wrong playbook, for the wrong team, in the wrong conference, upsetting the wrong fans.

BULLDOGSUX I will agree with you on the obnoxious fan part and will add to that. The fans who make me sick, are the fans who only jump on the bandwagon when it is a great season, but if it is a loss to UF, Bama and GT or basically any team, they are ugly about their coaches and want their heads to roll. Wasn’t it the same coaching last year for UGA? I might be wrong because I keep up with the players more. But what a season we had!

December 6th — Yet another SEC Championship game is upon us. These two teams are no doubt the best in the SEC and probably the nation. Whoever wins, I will be pulling for the SEC to win another Championship.
I have been dismayed to read all these anti-Gators posts and the negativity of all the Georgia fans.
I am a Gator alumni born of two University of Georgia alumni. (As my dad said when questioned about having his sons attend UF, “In state tuition is better school loyalty, expecially when it includes out-of-state tuition”) In fact, my father’s family gave land to what is now the old campus of the Unversity of Georgia. I married a Georgia peach! The University of Georgia is my second favorite school and I hope they win every game except when they play the University of Florida.
I understand where the Georgia fans are coming from. When I was a young kid, the top two schools in the SEC were Alabama and Georgia. Times have changed. Both schools made poor coaching hires since the Bear and Dooley retired. This allowed other schools to gain ground in the conference. As for Bama, Coach Bill Curry and Ray Perkins were great coaches who continued the greatness of Alabama… but the fans, for whatever reason, chased them off. As for Georgia, they should have hired Erik Russell instead of Ray Goff…what a mistake. Look what Russell did for Georgia Southern. Simply put, recruits don’t like instability or mediocrity. That has been the story line on both Alabama and Georgia over the last decade or so with a few good years scattered in between.
Bear Bryant use to say that Florida was the sleeping giant of the SEC. If and when they found a coach, everybody would be playing for second place. In 1990, we found Steve Spurrier who built the foundation that has made Florida the success it is today. Urban Meyer is continuing that tradition. But credit has to go to our Athlethic Director Jeremy Foley. It’s not just football but the other sports as well. UF has won the SEC All Sports Trophy 17 of the last 18 years — for both men and women’s sports. The root of all this hatred coincides with the success that Florida has achieved — both in the field of sports but also academically. Bama fans and UGA fans do not like it being a middle of the road school in the SEC.
Two of the last three fb coaches (Spurrier and Meyer) at Florida have a swaggeer and walk what they talk. I’m sure, GA fans would like Florida to go back to the days of Zook, Hall, Pell, Dickey, etc …
Unless and until Dawg fans look in the mirror and realize the problem lies with your athlethic director, your fan base, and your administration, the only national championships you will produce is in gymnastics!
Florida woke up and hired the best AD in the nation, who in turn, went for the best coaches he could find for all the sports. Success breeds success! Alabama, tired of mediocrity hired Sabin and their on the cusp of playing for a national championship. Coach Richt is a good coach but is he a great coach??
On another issue, all these Georgia fans who want to change the location of the annual GA-FL game from Jacksonville to home and home. Funny, you didn’t have that opinion when you were beating FL on a regular basis in the 1970s and 1980s. Dooley had no problem because this allowed UGA to recruit in Florida. If I remember correctly, Florida made those same arguments during this time frame. Basically, loosers make excuses and winners win!
Florida got tired of loosing and we decided to do something about it! This is why Georgia fans dislike the Gators so much! Envy! If you are tired of loosing to Florida, tired of other teams invading Georgia evey December for the SEC Championship game, tired of …. do something about it and quit complaining!
I am a proud Gator who loves the Dawgs. In fact, when I attend the UF-UGA game, clad in my orange and blue, I wear my Dad’s UGA Class of 47 ring around my neck and over my heart to remind me of the many fond memories we had together attending that game every year from 1969 to 1998. And yes, Florida lost most of those games but I pulled for UGA to win the 1980 and 1981 NC games. My wife and I now attend that game together — she in her Red and Black and me in my Orange and Blue.
As for tonight, this should be a great game! Win or lose, I will pull for the SEC Champion to win the NC game against Oklahoma, who is coached by a former Gator: Bob Stoops!
Good luck Gators; Good luck Tide
GO GATORS!!!!

86 Gator What a great story. I have been watching the Dawgs my whole life 40+ years and we’ve had our ups and downs. Had we not had such high expectations this year, it would be easier to accept these losses. The games we lost, were lost basically because we did not play as we should or could have. Yes, there were a few bad or missed calls, but these losses fall squarely on our shoulders, whether it be poor coaching or poor execution. The Dawgs of old came out fighting, especially when down. This team appeared to give up when down, so don’t blame AL or FL for playing their best games and beating us. We need to hopefully learn from our mistakes and maybe next season will be better. Anyway, whoever wins the SECCG today, I hope they make the SEC proud and take it all the way to a NC. I also hope everyone stops and realizes that football is a game. My life doesn’t change regardless of what happens on a football field. AND, if the Dawgs do well next year, I will not get on any blog and be a trash talker; it’s cheap and ugly regardless of who id doing the garbage talk.

JenniferUGA — Yes he passed away in 1999 at the age of 79. He was so proud of his Dawgs! In fact, I have on my basement wall (along with my Gator decorations) his Georgia decorations. His favorite was a picture called “Over the Top” from the 1980 NCgame in which Herschel Walker leaped into the endzone of a Notre Dame defender) And to those reading this, I married a GA Bulldog. We have a six year old daughter — who pulls for the Dawgs against “those stinky Gators” — too many UGA fans on the wife’s side of the family. But I have patience! The reason why the sec sells out it’s championship game and the acc hasn’t has several reasons:
Location—any fan of an sec team can drive to atlanta in short time. atlanta also has more graduates from uga, uf, bama and auburn and maybe tennessee living here than any other city. try living in boston and driving to tampa or jax. or even blacksburg or maryland. it’s a long drive. you’ve also had the champ game much longer than the acc. football is the bigger sport for most sec schools. basketball is bigger for half the acc. if you had say ga tech or va tech playing miami or clemson or fsu and the game was in the dome and these teams were say 11-1 or 10-2 and a birth to the nat champ game was on the line for a team, it would sell out no matter where it was. i guarantee you if a 9-3 ga team played a 9-3 bama team in tampa this year, it would not sell out. especially with the economy stinking. if the gators and tide were 9-3 this year and out of the nc picture, then it would not sell out. that’s the other big reason. almost every sec championship has national championship ramifications. botton line is the sec title game has 2 main things going for it. location and how good the two teams were this year. if clemson or gt has a chance at the title game and a miami or fsu was ranked in the top 10, that game would no dount be a sell out. wait and see. you’re going to see the acc’s top 5 teams be in contention for a nc in the next 2 years. and you’ll see a acc champ game sell out. a 10-2 bama against a 9-3 florida would not sell out this year. that is a fact.

Glad you got to grow up attending all those games with your dad. Not many people get to do that. Took my 7 year old grandson to his first UGA game last year vs AUBURN and it will forever be one of my most favorite not because we won but because of him being there. We were late getting into the stadium and when we walked out of the tunnel to our seats and he saw 92,000 screaming fans, his eyes got so big i thought they would pop out. He looked up at me and said “papa this is huge x 2” don’t have a clue where he came up with that phrase at but, i thought it was the best description of football in the South, especially in the SEC. Certain passion here in the south for college football. I read a post somewhere that said here in the South students learn at an early age that 2+2 don’t =4 it = 3rd down and 6.
Don’t hate the Gators or it’s fans as you described, the word envy you used pretty much sums it up. Don’t care which one wins today in the Dome both have great programs, scary part is the amount of underclassmen that are on both teams. Gators defense is the most improved i have ever watched play, only weakness i saw was maybe secondary, but Bama don’t have the big play threat to exploit it. Otherhand Bama’s defense is pretty solid across the board, should be a great game. If Bama keeps it close going into the 4th i think they win. if the get behind early though i don’t think they have the offense to come from behind.
Great post about your dad, i bet he’s also glad you married a Peach!! Agree with you also on the Bill Curry deal, Bama has a great coach now but think what they would have accomplished with Curry. UGA and Fla. would probally be fighting over the scraps right now.

I have been a Bulldog for 40 years and I do not consider myself a “disgruntled bystander” as the headline for this story claims. I love the broad brush strokes that AJC headline writers use. Not.
I am also happy with our 9-3 record. I wish it could have been 12-0 but we lost to 3 outstanding teams. It was not the devestating event that this newspaper’s writers make it out to be.
If we win our bowl, we will have a 10 wins season for the 6th time in 7 years. I can live with that kind of success. I have lived with a lot worse in the past.
Vince won 201 games over 25 years and for you Tech math majors out there that is approximately 8 wins a year.
I love my ogs, but my hat is off to Alabama, Florida, and Tech. All three schools had excellent teams this year, but I hope we beat them next year.

BAMA STAN- Where are you at now??????? How does it feel to know that you guys benefited from a weak schedule, in a weak division? You guys are terrible and had no business being on the turf with Florida. You were paper #1’s and it showed tonight. Have fun playing Utah in the Sugar Bowl. That should be a great one… What a joke your team, your coach, your qb, your defense with big fat Cody are. HAHAHAHA.

Appropriate column considering that before the season Georgia was expected to be playing in this game and on the way to the BCS championship. And it should erk (sic) every Dog fan that Florida (as usual) is here instead. Maybe this irksomeness will make its way through to the players and they can learn to block, tackle and hold onto the ball better next year. That’s how you win championships.
BTW, leave it to Williamson to work Bruce Springsteen into a conversation about Georgia football. He should have used “Al Kooper ‘discovering’ Lynyrd Skynyrd” as his metaphor — this is Southern football, after all. Plus I’ve heard that Skynyrd is really Hondo’s favourite band…

Great trip to Atlanta yesterday and a great game. Just made reservations for Miami.
86gator…great read, thanks for the post.
Tom…nice post as well, your vocabulary is really impressive.
For you revisionist historians, UGA owns the all time record because of what happened before 1950. It is NOT just since Spurrier arrived. UF led the series in the 50’s and 60’s (you might want to check the record books on that :-)), UGA led the 70’s and 80’s and the Gators have owned the dawgs since 1990…THANKS HBC!!!! So we know all too well that UGA owns the all-time due to domination before 1950. Domination since is what matters today so y’all keep hanging onto that all-time pacifier.
Sadly, UGA will fire one of the finest people in college football just like AU, TN and MSU did this year…because of what is going on at Bama and UF. Not saying it is right but the handwriting is on the wall.
I pulled for UGA to beat Hawaii last year and have been to 2 Sugar Bowls UGA played in, pulling for ‘em there also. Because UGA is in the SEC…that is how it ought to be.

By the way…congrats to Bama for a great season and great game. Overachieved and it is scary to think of where you are headed!
And congrats to the Gators. Without an All-SEC tight end, two key interior defensive linemen and THE BEST PLAYER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL, defeated a heckuva team in a great game.

I will be pulling my limp johnson during the SEC game, drinking beer and getting high. Who cares who wins after this horrible season, nothing to look forward to in the dismal future. Just more Richt ads for fancy furniture outlets and good old Ford trucks, built Georgia Football tough.
God it sucks to be a Georiga fan….
