This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Bradley’s Buzz: Dress this in white and gold!

This just in — Tech beats Georgia

If you’re a Tech fan, you can’t read enough about what transpired Saturday. (If you’re a Georgia fan, you’ve already read too much. So feel free to skip to the next Buzz topic. You might like that one better.)

So, just for the enjoyment of all Jacket backers, here’s David Paschall’s game story from the Chattanooga Times Free Press. And here’s Gennaro Filice of SI.com singing the praises of Paul Johnson.

And here, for the benefit of those who live in the Atlanta area, is a byline you probably don’t see very much — Paul Newberry of the Associated Press. As the lead sports writer for the Atlanta AP bureau, Paul covers the same events the AJC covers, which means we almost never run his stories because we run our own. But he’s a tremendous writer — in my view, the best AP writer in the country — and here’s his gamer from Tech-Georgia.

And here, for no real reason other than it gives me a chance to say thanks to Tech’s Roddy Jones, is a roundup from Sporting News Today that features a big picture of Roddy Jones. Back in August, Mr. Jones was kind enough to offer me a tutorial on Tech’s new offense, and if he’d done the same for Willie Martinez the outcome might have been different. Speaking of whom …

Anyone need a defensive coordinator?

There’s a good one available. John Chavis, long of Tennessee, is now out of work, as Mike Strange of the Knoxville News-Sentinel noted before the Vols beat Kentucky. Earlier in the season, a still-bitter Johnny Majors had told Mark Wiedmer of the Chattanooga Times Free Press that Chavis had saved Phillip Fulmer’s job for 10 years.

Now I know Mark Richt has said he’s not looking for scapegoats and he isn’t anticipating staff changes, but if I were an SEC coach looking to shore up my defense, I wouldn’t look any further than Chavis. Again, that’s just me.

No. 1 versus No. 2 in the A-T-L

That will happen Saturday at the Georgia Dome, and frequent Buzz contributor Greg Doyel wrote on CBSsports.com that the No. 1 team — that’d be Alabama — shouldn’t bother to show up. (My guess is that Bama will. My guess is that it will even win the game.)

Whatever happens, we can all be thankful that the SEC championship participants weren’t chosen by computer. Here’s Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports railing about the latest injustice in college football, which is always music to these ears.

Speaking of Michael Vick …

Which we actually weren’t, but what the heck. Here’s former colleague Mike Tierney writing in the New York Times about Matt Ryan winning over Vick fans. And here, just because good ol’ Greg makes this Buzz job entirely easy, is the aforementioned Mr. Doyel averring that he’ll never forgive Vick.

Keeping Mike Bibby

That’s what Marc Stein of ESPN.com believes the Hawks will do, despite speculation that the point guard would be traded come February. Me, I see two key reasons Bibby will be here through season’s end: The Hawks are off to a good start and can’t in good conscience dump salary when they’re making a playoff run, and Mike Woodson doesn’t yet trust Acie Law IV to run the team.

I know this goes against the spirit of these blogs, but just wanted to say that I’ve noted a number of UGA fans making some classy posts in the last couple of days congratulating the Jackets. They’re appreciated. Here’s hoping the rivalry is back in balance for a while. (And of course that we have the same result next year.)

There are several things that I would like to know:

I wonder if K. Moreno now knows who Jonathan Dwyer is. If not, please tell Mr. Moreno that Mr. Dwyer is the one who rushed for 144 yards on Saturday (compared to his 97). Tell him also that Mr. Dwyer is the one who gained ten less yards (1338 vs 1328) this year than Mr. Moreno on 37 less carries which equates to a 7.0 yards per carry average for Mr. Dwyer to 5.9 yards per carry for Mr. Moreno. Oh, and Mr. Moreno also might want to find out who Roddy Jones is. He is the one who rushed for 214 yards compared to 97 yards for Mr. Moreno on Saturday.

I would like to know if Eric Zeier would like to retract his reference to Georgia Tech’s “high school offense”. That cannot be good for Georgia, since that same offense ran all over his Dawgs on Saturday.

I wonder if David Pollack still thinks that Georgia Tech is “irrelevant”.

I would like to know if all the “experts” who bashed the ACC earlier this year have taken a second look. The ACC has a 37-11 out of conference record which is the same as the SEC and second only to the Big 12 which has a 38-10 record. Oh, and the ACC has a 4-0 record against the Big 12 this year and is 6-4 against the SEC.

I wonder if there are still people who think that Paul Johnson’s offense will not work at a BCS school because of all the fast, athletic defenses it will face.

PJ is one of the best coaches (THE BEST IMO) in college football. Do you honestly think that UGA can put better athletes, than what they had, on the field Saturday? Let me put it a different way. Let Richt and PJ switch teams and let’s see what the score would have been. Tech is on the way up, open the doors for a flood of new fans. I’m past ready for a football power shift in the state, as well as a few NEW teams for the state of Georgia to cheer for.

I’d like to temper some of these comments about the SEC and ACC. The SEC is top heavy with 2 of the best teams, UGA in the middle and everyone else. The ACC is stronger as a group with no top team, but many in the middle with 9-3, 8-4 records. What we’re seeing is the ACC finally getting rid of some coaches who didn’t cut the mustard and replacing them with coaches that do (still have FSU). Now the SEC must do the same with Tennessee, MState, and eventually Kentucky and South Carolina, and Arkansas. It happens in cycles, and let’s not forget that the Big 12 was a 2 team league, until this year with a couple of teams in the middle. The Big East is going through transformation now, with new power Cincinnati the first out of the shoot.

I say these things because of the yearly discussion about who’s got the best conference. The answer: Depends on which year!!

When you think about the strength of conference, remember that GTech, Duke, NCState, BostonC, FSU (in transit), Miami, NCarolina and Clemson, all have coaching staffs with less than 3 years. It takes a little while to get the prgrams on top, but you can bet there will be 3-4 of these teams in the top 15 in future years. I’m guessing at least one of these will also break the top 4 as well.

I think the emergence of Alabama and Florida will continue for a while, and UGA should also come back as well. However, I think LSU got a coach that can’t recruit top players or coaches, and will be looking for a replacement in 2 years. Tennessee is also making a mistake bringing in a pro coach, as recent examples have proven not to be able to do the job.

And the dawgs have come full circle. Anyone here remember all the crowing from UGA fans after beating UF for the third time in 18 years after last year’s game? As a Gator, I sure as hell do. Now, the Ramblin’ Wreck has cranked up their trash-talking machine to full capacity having forgotten that Saturday’s game only makes them 1-7 versus Mark Richt. I’m not saying y’all don’t deserve to enjoy the win, Jacket fans, just do yourselves a favor and keep it in perspective. Which brings me to a new topic, congratulations ACC on your success versus my beloved SEC (yes, I’m an SEC ‘homer’ and, no, I don’t care what you think). Before you guys proclaim yourselves the superior conference, however, just remember that this is one successful year, not twenty. And it took some unforeseen misfortune for some of the SEC’s better programs for any of this to even be remotely possible. For example, who here was able to see the Auburn and Tennessee fiascos coming? And LSU faceplanting a year after winning a BCS championship? And UGA’s mediocre showing this year, despite the immense talent level? Mississippi St. went back to being, well, Mississippi St. Vandy was a nice surprise, but will get depantsed by someone during bowl season. Ole Miss finally put some of those successful recruiting seasons by Ed Orgeron together thanks in no small part to Houston Nutt, who shoud win league coach of the year honors (and making we Gator fans slightly less horrified for our loss in The Swamp since the Rebels have now earned themselves a spot in the Cotton Bowl, no small accomplishment). In short, this year has been an anomaly for the SEC and next season shows no guaratees for improvement as UT will be breaking in a new coach, Auburn will attempt to right the ship, etc. But make no mistake, the SEC’s long reign over college football was no fluke… we will be back. And let us not forget that this season is not over because despite some struggles by the conference as a whole, after Saturday, the SEC will be competing for a third straight national championship. The winner in the Dome this Saturday will earn themselves a spot in Miami for it all, something the ACC has failed to do since its expansion (which was done in an effort to keep pace with the SEC, no less). At any rate, congratulations for now… enjoy it while it lasts.

PS. Big shocker… Bradley has once again picked against Florida in a big game setting… where I come from, this is called a ‘pattern.’ Two things for you to chew on Bradley; First, remember the last time you picked against UF? How did that turn out? Second, can you be original at some point? Using every opportunity to pick against the Gators is really kinda old… we get it, you hate and/or are jealous of Florida.

GO GATORS!!!

To answer the question about the returning starters Tech will only have to replace 4 starters on defense (though three of them were CRUCIAL on the D-Line) in Michael Johnson, Vance Walker, Darryl Richard, and Jahi Word-Daniels, and 1 starter on offense - All-ACC guard Andrew Gardner. We’ve already had to live without Gardner and Word-Daniels a couple games, but the linemen will really hurt. Overall, though the offense should take a big step forward in year 2 under Johnson, though the defense may only hold steady or take a stutter step back. We need a dedicated coach to work special teams so we don’t have a weak area there like we did this year.
We should also be much deeper as we are still about a dozen scholarship players shy of the full NCAA allowable. I predict at least as much success next year, and a FANTASTIC 2010.

Nice article, Mark! With the mutts muzzled, here are some opinions of my own: (1) Tech should go to the Chik-fil-A Bowl, if there is a choice. It’s in Atlanta, and Tech fans will pour in there in great numbers.

(2) Although UGA, otherwise known as Athens Football Factory, Inc., saw its most notable manufacture destroyed, last Saturday, Bulldog fans should dry their tears. UGA could still end up 10-3, and Tech could still end up only 9-4. So we will see how the two finish against other folks.

Their licking their wounds…as would be expected. I’m not real sure why some SEC homers are still bragging about the power of their conference. Most years, yes, the SEC is the best conference. This year, the SEC isn’t even in the discussion. There are two good SEC teams…UF and Bama. The rest are mediocre at best. Until the SEC climbs back on top, you’re not the best…not even close. You can brag about the past 20 years, but it’s in the past. You can’t win anything by living in the past…

* Mark * or fellow bloggers:

I have a question. How does Oklahoma get into the Big 12 championship game after having lost to Texas and finishing with the exact same record as Texas? Doesn’t head to head come as the first tie-break?

I had heard it is because Oklahoma is now ranked higher in the BCS standings than Texas. This is complete BS too me and I know to others, if this is true.

Think of this. GT finished with the same record as VT, but lost to VT head-to-head. Given the above scenario, they are higher in the BCS standings than VT… so….. whats good for one school should be good for another, in this flawed system, no?

Screw the BCS, we need a playoff in College Football.

Strange how a bunch of fans have come out of the woodwork to boast about a game in which they were crushed for 3 quarters. From a UGA fan: I’d keep my bragging to a minimum b/c just like UF treats the Dawgs, we’ll be rubbing your face in sh*t for the next several years. And don’t hand me this: “Oh its a new beginning. Oh, we’ve changed….Can’t wait for the new recruits….Rivalry reborn.”

59-37-5 = No rivalry. Just a gnat on the schedule. The option can’t be stopped, but it can be contained. You’ll be in for a rude awakening in a year when ACC opponents are prepared for this high school/I-AA scheme. You’re not playing UMass, CT, Air Force, Army and E. Michigan year in and year out in this big boy league. As the Zen master said..We’ll See. Trust me, you’ll have it coming.

By Mark Bradley

Head-to-head would have been the first tiebreaker in a two-way tie, but because it was a three-way tie — Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech — Big 12 rules called for the highest-ranked team in the BCS standings to go to the conference title game.

The SEC, you should know, has different rules: If there’s a three-way tie and two of the tied teams are within five places of each other in the BCS standings, that tie is broken by the head-to-head result. Meaning Texas would have been going to the conference title game, not Oklahoma.

Now, if Mizzou beats Oklahoma (big IF, but hey you never know), Texas would then be in line to play for the championship even though, like UGA last year, they did not win their conference.

Congrats to Tech. The team that played the best won. My beloved Dogs committed two turnovers that led directly to 14 Tech points. Tech to their credit did not turn the ball over at all. Turnovers will kill you in football and with a 45-42 score, I think that was the difference.

I have been following the Dogs for 40+ years and never thought a Dog team that scored 42 points would lose a game. I don’t think either of our defenses were anything to get excited about. However with the exception of the final score, it was one of the most exciting UGA-Tech games in many years.

I hope some of you bloggers get your ugly hate under control. I would hate to see this rivalry game discontinued because a handful of fans on both sides cause it to spin out of control. It has happened with Alabama-Auburn and a lot of other natural geographic rivalries. Please don’t cause it here.

As for UGA, we can still have our 6th 10+ win season out of the last 8 under CMR with a bowl win. Let’s get behind the Dogs and win our bowl. Go Dogs!

And Tech, enjoy your win and we will see you next year.

ACC 6-3 vs. SEC this season.

Whenever the SEC teams beat up on each other folks say “well that’s just how good the conference is..”

When the ACC sends two 3 loss teams to it’s Championship Game decided in the last week of the season, we have a “down conference…”

If head to head (the two losses coming from possibly the best team in the country, Florida) doesn’t count for anything, then I don’t know what else to say.

And this exemplifies everything I dislike about UGA. Not the school. Not the team. It’s the fans. When Samuel fumbled that kickoff, I had a ton of sympathy for him. At the same time, however, I was filled with glee at how I imagined people like “Caterdawg” reacted…

To those trash talking UGa fans above (JB, Caterdawg, Puppydawg and DawginLex)…first of all, you Dawg fans have been downright intolerable for years with all your trash talking, so for Tech fans to gloat a bit now is noting more (and in fact is far less) than what you Dawg fans have done for years. Don’t dish it out if you can’t take it.

Secondly, that team that just rang up 45 points on your beloved Dawgs started 16 frosh and sophomores, so those young men will only get better. Nesbitt? Soph. Dwyer? Soph. Roddy Jones? Soph…the list goes on and on. And our coach insists we are NOWHERE near where he expects us to be soon, maybe 50% of our “high shcool offense” is actually installed.

You’ll be without Moreno, Stafford and Massaquio next year, while we will be without our D line. Who do you think will be harder to replace??

We’ll see you in Atlanta. We look forward to it !!

Brad,

Before you go touting the ACC’s success as a one year wonder, just remember that Tech went 2-0 against Auburn in a three year stretch when Auburn was one of the top 2 or 3 programs in the SEC.

As a Tech fan, I have no problem objectively stating that the SEC is the best football conference in the country most years. But all this crap about how bad the ACC is, isn’t accurate this year and hasn’t been accurate most years.

The ACC is filling 10 bowl slots this year. How many is the SEC filling?

Florida and Alabama are two powerhouses for sure, and the ACC just doesn’t have programs at that level right now. But we’re talking about conferences with TWELVE teams, not two. Duke is the ACC’s worst team record-wise and they beat Vandy, a bowl bound SEC team. Wake Forest is the ACC’s 5th or 6th best team and they beat Ole Miss (SEC #3 or #4) and Vandy (SEC #5 or #6).

I am a female UGA grad who is married to a Tech grad. I came across these messages, and am dumbfounded! First of all, congrats, Tech, on your win. It was a close game, but you guys came out on top, and that’s all that matters in the end.

Reading through these messages, there are so many messages of hate from BOTH sides. I admit there are obnoxious UGA fans, but there are just as many obnoxious Tech fans. Trust me, I have put up with a lot from my husband’s GT friends over the years. I always feel as if GT fans criticize UGA fans, but it’s truly just as bad from both sides. Let’s all realize this, and hopefully, one day, the game will speak for itself. The biggest “insult”, Tech, should be your team beating ours and you all being able to hold your heads high for a year. Nothing else needs to be said.

On that note, let’s all smile and have a good holiday season. A football game and “smack talk” really aren’t important in the long run.

as a dawg fan, i give congrats to tech for their win. enjoy it tech fans, it won’t happen next yr, w/or w/o moreno/stafford.

our tackling was terrible in 3rd qtr. (you’re welcome tech) i’ve not been happy w/martinez’s style of defense since after his second year. i thought give him at least 2 yrs and see how he works out. i have blogged only a few times over past 2 seasons but one main concern i usually complain about, as well as others i’ve read, is martinez’s defense. he had a stretch at end of last yr where he seemed to get his players and scheme straight, but this whole year defensively was odd, especially last 4 games. i know we’ve had plenty injuries, seemed they had to go less contact in practice per richt, but one doesn’t lose simple tackle tech in just a matter of games.

i do have one question. didn’t the officiating seem “funny” to y’all? i mean if stafford gets called for intentional grounding and next tech series nesbitt does same thing and no flag? there was obvious holding on tech’s “fullback” on cj byrd on a td run in 3rd qtr and no call. we get called for holding on Glenn (OL) in second qtr, and on replay was not even close compared to tech’s hold, and that “interference” call on asher in second half was not, even by the announcers on cbs. i’m not saying the ref’s threw the game but did not seemed to be called as equally.

chavis, if willing, would seem to be a good replacement for martinez. but i say promote garner, if he’s willing, to be dc. if not, then i’d like miss state dc to be given chance. seems miss state defense kept them in a lot of games w/their anemic offense. what do you think about those options if martinez is demoted/let go (and i do hate to see people lose their job, too), Mark?

again, congrats tech fans. enjoy it for at least one year.

bhamwreck - You asked about returning players.

Next year we have our ENTIRE STARTING OFFENSE from the UGA game returning. In fact, only two are even Juniors.

On Defense, we lose three Seniors on the defensive line and have everyone else returning.

Tech’s two-deep Depth Chart

Given the recruits we already have committed, it looks like we could be good for a LONG TIME.

I don’t think Tech fans know what they have in Paul Johnson. Once PJ gets the players he needs and they get another year of his offense under their belts, look out! Stafford, Green, Moreno, Massaquoi, King those players are as good as they come. If you’re UGA, how do you improve on that? PJ beat the dawgs, in Athens, his FIRST year as coach. The dogs are as good as they’re going to get. I don’t think I’d be looking forward to a rematch next year if I was a dog fan.

Hey Pitbull…..14 pts coming off turnovers….Sorry it was only 13 points….And as far as Turnovers go…remember when Tony Taylor returned the fumble for a TD a few years back that was the difference….And I could probably list a total array of turnovers that accounted for Tech losses in the past 7 years but it is not needed….From #1 in Preseason Polls to #2 in the state of Georgia and the biggest disappointment in the history of college football that about sums up the UGA program.

Here Are Some Facts Florida 45 FSU 15 Alabama 34 Clemson 10 South Carolina 34 NC State 0 Florida 26 Miami 3 GT 45 UGA 42 GT 38 Miss State 7 Wake Forest 30 Ole Miss 28 Wake Forest 23 Vandy 10 Clemson 31 South Carolina 14 Duke 10 Vandy 7

A Few More For You 10 ACC teams with a .500 winning pct or better and 8 teams with a 500 winning pct or better.

Tennessee, Miss State and possibly Auburn with new coaches next year and Clemson with their New head coach already on the job.

NC State will be better, GT will be better, Miami improving, UNC will be better, BC bouncing back one year after losing Matt Ryan shows they are improving already, FSU showing signs of improvement, VT will continue to be good, Duke is improving, Maryland is good, UVA has some work to do, Clemson already on the rebound and Wake Forest beat the 4th and arguably the 5th or 6th best team in the SEC this year so they are improving also.

Florida and Alabama are ELITE, UGA and LSU have some patches to work on, Ole Miss looking good, South Carolina needs to improve under Spurrier, Arkansas has Petrino…NUFF SAID!!!, Tennessee, Miss State and Auburn must rebuild, Kentucky and Vandy has issues and the conference has slipped in the last 12 months.

All this said so all the SEC homers can see that outside of 2 ELITE teams and 2-4 good teams the SEC is not that good top to bottom. Where the ACC has beat you head to head and has more GOOD teams(5-9) but not the ELITE team. Could that be that the ACC is beating up on each other more and the SEC is cake walking? Just a question NOT a statement.

Anyway, Tech’s record of 8 in a row in the Rivalry is still intact, thank Bobby Dodd!

Sorry, but I’m not buying. My post was in response to the idiot RAMBLEON who thinks that GT is the only school that has underclassmen playing.

And you know for a fact that MS and KM are gone? Funny, they haven’t announced anything yet. Be careful what you wish for. Joe Cox, Logan Gray and the 2 new QB’s are all capable of doing well especially behind an OL with a lot of experience and its best road grader returning. Everything else is in place to rebound.

Might be nice to be rated lower and overachieve………………..

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how anyone figures Mike Vick has gotten a raw deal. Everything that has happened to him is a direct result of depraved criminal activity on his part that ought to sicken anyone. Yeah, I liked watching him play, too. But I can’t understand the folks interviewed in Tierny’s piece who think Vick has been treated unfairly. Hell, he’ll spend less than two years in prison. That’s a gift. ACC sports writers announced all ACC teams.

Dwyer was unanimous 1st team RB. Gardner, Michael Johnson and Vance Walker were also 1st teamers for Tech. (Nice for Gardner to get this even with his injury, dude deserved it.)

Richard and Burnett on D were 2nd teamers, as was Cord Howard on O.

I have congratulated Tech in a few other blogs & will continue to do so.

I had said that Coach Johnson was a great hire for the Jackets and will give Tech a chance to play for the ACC title.. Noone (not even the Tech faithful) thought CPJ would get their ship righted this soon.

I hope UGA learned a few things from this game, like - tackling with both arms, toss sweeping the RB’s to the WIDE side (KN had one tote to the wide side - TD) and quit tossing to the short side, kick the ball in the field of play. There are a few others, but you get my drift..

On another note - you played flawlessly in inclimate weather! Kudos to you…

So once again, CONGRATS to ya Jackets.. Huge win for your program.

OLDGOLD get it right 6-4 Gators won 2 games & Bamma won one game against the ACC, I would not like to play either team as the best team in the ACC(Ga TECH) but I would select BAMA because of their FAT SLOW BIG D-LINE, It might be the UVa game all over again but it very well could be the UGA game again. TECH is the BEST OF THE ACC AND WE? THEY ALL KNOW IT. VT escapeted with some bad calls and a 3 point win. The ACC SHIP game will look as bad as it did with CG leading GT 2 yrs ago. Nothing but kicking for scores. GA. TECH ain’t your dad’s oldsmobile. Bring AU, Ole MISS, MSU, LSU, UT, USC, Vandy, UGA, Ktucky, and ArkeSaw and I have NO DOUBT we will kick that BUTT. Bama would make a GOOD game, but I do fear the GATOR’s speed. This is like the Big man on Campus getting all the PUDDING, but the real man enjoying the SWEEt rewards.

Let’s face it - both teams have their share of mouths that most Alum would prefer to remain shut.

UGA fans (Alum and non-Alum) - get over it, we get to savor this win for the next year just as you have the past several.

For me personally, all this means is that my GT ornament goes higher on the Xmas tree than does my Wife’s UGA ornanment. After that, it’s history.

As far as Tech’s future, it is bright given the FACTs: This team is very young. CPJ has yet to install the whole offense. This team’s # of scholarship players increases dramatically for next year. This year was beyond anyone’s expectations (well most of us, at least). UGA had two weeks to prepare for GT’s “high school offense” and plenty of film to watch, but still could not handle it for most of the second half. Do you really think GT is going to take a huge step backwards? I do not think so. As for the D-line, you may want to take another look at the red-shirt freshmen and deeper than the two-deep. There are some really good kids coming up.

Now look at UGA, ranked number 1 preseason only to lose badly against its’ only real competition. Given the preseason expectation for each team, I am glad to be on the GT end of things.

As for Stafford/Moreno next year, I really don’t see them sticking around given where each would most likely go in the draft and I wouldn’t blame them either just as I didn’t blame Calvin Johnson. It would be nice to see Stafford hurling balls at CJ.

For all those UGA fans that say that UGA will “never lose two years in a row”. You are obviously too young to remember the Donnan years. “Never” is an awefully long time and those with any sense of realism try not to use that term as it’s “never” usually the case. Never say “never”, as the old addage goes.

UGA is a good program and will win again. Will it win next year - maybe, maybe not. I hope not, but that is why they play the game.

Time to go decorate the tree.

I love how UGA fans try to rag on Tech’s stadium. Having been to both I can honestly say that I prefer it to UGA’s. What’s your problem with it, that it’s small? You know, since there are things in Atlanta other than Tech, wecan’t simply expand into the next pasture for more room. Our stadium is vertical. I’ve never had trouble actually seeing the game there. Yours, on the other hand, slopes up like a dinner plate. The most memorable part of attending games there, apart from the obnoxiousness of the nearby fans, was for me the difficulty in actually viewing the action on the field because the guy in the row in front of me was only sitting about 6 inches lower than I was.

Yes, believe it or not, I’m still around. Uga fans may not get that, but then again why bother. I’ve been sitting here reading all these posts and while I would love to comment on many of them, I will not get involved in the squabble.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate my beloved Jackets for a great, hard fought, gutsy win! I would also like to congratulate the Bulldogs for a great fight and an unbelieveable game, especially from your three stars. Tech still hasn’t learned to defend slants, screens, seams, or drags so that will have to change. On the other hand, this has to be the best rushing performance I’ve seen since the Eddie Lee Ivory days, and I kind of liked it! I’m not sure if Uga’s defense was 3 points worse or Tech’s offense was 3 better. But both defenses looked like something out of the Big 12.

Thankfully Tech ended up on top with the help of being able to get a clutch first down and run the clock out, something we haven’t been able to do in recent years. Look at the bright side Uga, at least the gymnastics season is firing up (couldn’t help it after 7 yrs of it)!

Seriously though, great game by both teams and both sides should be proud. I’ve always dreamed of a #1 and #2 show-down between the two in the last game of the year. Good luck to the Bulldogs and my Jackets in their respective bowl games!

A Logical Process for a Division I College Football Playoff System 12/4/08 [a.k.a. 16 qualify — 119 eligible]

Mr. Bradley, There has been much discussion of late for the need of a playoff system for Division I football. I support the position that a playoff system is a fair and logical process for all 119 Division I programs.

I propose a 16 team format. To ease concerns of the season being too long I would limit a team’s schedule to 11 games to accommodate the potential 4 other playoff games that two schools would end up playing. To accommodate the four major bowls I suggest the two semi-final games be played at two of those bowls and be rotated to the other two the following year. The national championship game could take place about 10 days after the semi-finals to allow for players to rest and so that the season wouldn’t extend into the beginning of the academic spring semester. For purposes of fairness, and to allow the non-BCS schools an opportunity to prove themselves and grow their programs on equal footing with the BCS aligned schools I suggest that an automatic berth be given to each of the 11 Division I conference champions. Then the remaining five playoff spots be awarded to the top remaining five schools that did not get an automatic playoff birth. Then rank all 16 teams and have the #1 seed play #16, #2 play #15 and so on. This would allow for an independent school to be in the playoffs, plus it would accommodate a situation in which this year there are two undefeated non-BCS conference schools (Boise State and Ball State) which are ranked higher than two BCS aligned conference champions (ACC and Big East reps), and yet Boise and Ball State have almost 0% of making a BCS bowl. In addition, non-BCS school, TCU is ranked higher in the BCS than either the ACC and Big East conference leaders and TCU has no way of playing in a major bowl unlike the representatives from those two conferences. It would also accommodate the situation we have this year in which one could debate whom among three great teams from the same conference has earned the right to represent that conference (i.e. Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech from the Big 12).

With this in mind here is a potential scenario of how a playoff of bracket would look based on this weeks BCS rankings and current conference leaders. 1. Alabama – SEC Champion 2. Oklahoma - Big 12 Champion 3. Texas – At Large (BCS rank 3) Big 12 4. Florida – At Large (BCS rank 4) SEC 5. USC – Pac10 Champion 6. Utah – Mountain West Champion 7. Texas Tech – At Large (BCS rank 7) Big 12 8. Penn State – Big 10 Champion 9. Boise State – WAC Champion 10. Ohio State- At Large (BCS rank 10) Big 10 11. TCU – At Large (BCS rank 11) Mountain West 12. Ball State – MAC Champion 13. Cincinnati – Big East Champion 14. Georgia Tech – ACC Champion 15. Tulsa – C-USA Champion 16. Troy – Sunbelt Champion

The first round makes for some compelling games of underdog programs who get a shot at playing their better known in-state competitors [ #16 Troy vs. #1 Alabama, #15 Tulsa vs. #2 Oklahoma]. Plus the match ups of Penn State vs. Boise State and Ohio State vs. Texas Tech seem very competitive. Of course the teams of this scenario may change pending outcomes of the up coming conference championship games to be played this weekend. I could go on for another page justify the fairness and necessity of having a playoff system for all 119 Division I programs, but I won’t here. However, the scenario above is a simple, logical, and fair process for all 119 Division I programs.

Thanks for your time. Randall Rush 214-673-1769

Georgia’s defense probably doesn’t need to be shored up, the players just need to be taught how to tackle.

On an earlier blog following your column interviewing several Dawg-watchers, I whinged about Neil Williamson’s reference to Jon Landau discovering Bruce Springsteen. I hereby rescind my earlier comment: I think Tech beating Georgia is precisely like Landau discovering Springsteen — both have made a certain group of people happy, but neither event will change the balance of anything, really.
