This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Bradley’s Buzz: Honk if you love the Falcons

Hey, these guys are pretty good

You might recall that Sports Illustrated’s eminent Dr. Z picked the Falcons to go 2-14. Well, as of Monday morning the same Falcons have cracked Peter King’s top 10 in his weekly Fine Fifteen on SI.com. They’re No. 9, and ol’ Pete — I’ve known him for nearly 30 years, I should stipulate — confesses: “I really like the Falcons.”

So, journalistically speaking, does Steve Wyche of NFL.com. Having covered Sunday’s game in the Dome, my esteemed former colleague was so moved he likened this Falcons’ season to the Saints’ improbable ascent in 2006.

Also on hand was Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, who goes to great lengths to laud the Falcon defense. I would, however, quibble with one of Yasinskas’ points: He claims the Falcons have only one playmaker — John Abraham — among their front seven. I’d nominate Michael Boley as a playmaker.

And Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, rejecting the assertion that Drew Brees is the NFL’s MVP, suggests Matt Ryan is even more valuable. He also suggests what has become increasingly apparent: That Ryan is at worst the second-best rookie quarterback in modern NFL history, trailing only Dan Marino.

Honk (softly) if you love the Hawks

There’s not yet a groundswell of appreciation for the unbeaten local NBA franchise. Indeed, the Hawks’ rise to 5-0 garnered only a fleeting mention on ESPN.com’s Monday morning Daily Dime. And the best I could do for an updated power rating was Marty Burns of SI.com, who had the Hawks No. 8 as of last week. (They’ve won three times since.)

Late-breaking update! At 5:50 p.m. Monday, I found Marc Stein’s latest rankings on ESPN.com. And he, believe it or not, has the Hawks fifth. Hooray!

I also found something on the Bleacher Report, where someone by the name of Coach Samuel contends the Hawks are legit. And who might Coach Samuel be? According to his online bio, he lives in Atlanta, coaches high school basketball and “is a regular on Sekou Smith’s Atlanta Hawks blog on AJC.com.”

Unsolicited endorsement: I’d advise everyone who isn’t already to become a regular on Sekou’s blog. It is, in a word, outstanding.

Diagram this one, will you?

Writing for the Athens Banner-Herald, David Ching reports that Georgia’s winning touchdown pass against Kentucky came on a play called F-Jet 346 Crimson, which doesn’t really mean much since the whole thing collapsed. As Ching notes, Georgia won because Matthew Stafford scrambled and A.J. Green ran along the back of the end zone and a broken play would up golden.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

You’ve just gained 74 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead your North Carolina Tar Heels past Georgia Tech in a key ACC tilt. If you’re Ryan Houston, how do you celebrate? According to Lenox Rawlings of the Winston-Salem Journal, the 242-pound back planned to hop in the tub and watch “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

Didn’t Bronko Nagurski used to do the same thing?

Why do Falcons have a great first half offense and second half play conservative? They stop passing and run up the middle /off tackle second half. I say keep the pressure on the other team and throw deep more.

BBEP BEEP FOR THE FALCONS!!!!

BEEP BEEP FOR THE HAWKS!!!!-They could have lost last night on the road but came up big!!!!

With every win these 2 teams make the magic number for the palyoffs grows smaller and smaller

My thoughts on Magic number:

Falcons need 10 wins to get in…4 to go Hawks need 44 for 6th spot…39 to go

Great win for the Falcons. I wholeheartedly agree that they play way too soft after they get a lead. This is going to kill them BIG TIME against some of the better teams.

Hawks are looking great. They are for real. Solo is a pretty good sub. Most of us knew this all last year. There is no excuse for Woody not playing him last year. Woody seems to be coaching better this year. If the Hawks can get through this stretch with a winning record WITHOUT Josh Smith, they will be a MONSTER when he returns.* FLIP IS THE MAN*.

I can understand the concerns about the Falcons scoring woes in 2nd half of games, but if you think about it they are sending a message to other teams that you are not going to beat us in the second half because we are not going to give you the ball to be able to do so. When you have a double digit lead going into the second half and you’re able to hold the ball as long as the Falcons have been able to then why not run out the clock?

To me that is just as effective as throwing down field and putting up a lot of points because this allows the other teams more possessions to score and increases their chances of scoring. How many possessions did the Saints have in the second half? How long where those possessions? It would be one thing if we were always going 3 and out and giving the opponents more chances to score.

The saints had 2 possessions in the 3rd quarter. They both resulted in punts. This happens because our defense was rested and they were rested because our offense held on to the football.

You really can’t count the TDs in the 4th because the first one was poor tackling by Boley and the second was meaningless. The offense strikes hard in the 1st half and then controls the clock in the 2nd half. As long as they continue to win I am more than happy.

As an Atlanta native who moved to Ca in ‘78 I still LOVE the Falcons following you guys since inception. Vick was exciting on the ground and Ryan is AWSOME passing to some great receivers! I knew Roddy and Michael would be terrific the first time I saw these guys! The defense is coming along and I think they need just one more HERO in the line to be great so somebody please step up! Jerious needs to be given the ball more in the second half and why do you get so conservative in the last half? Prevent defenses always prevent a WIN! But then who can argue with Mike, COACH OF THE YEAR! Play well and stay well! All you have to do is beat the other guy and you are there. BEST OF LUCK THE REST OF THE YEAR!

You’re right! It is different with a QB that throws the football, but it’s also different when your coaches create a balance attack and don’t force your hand.

I wrote an irate letter to Peter King last week, condemning him for putting the Falcons behind the Packers and Bears. Ridiculous, it was. Now he’s rectified that injustice and, in his column today, admitted that the hell he received from Atlanta fans last week helped him see the light.

Trent Dilfer was giving Ryan all kinds of love on Cowherd today. He gushed for a while and then admitted he just couldn’t come up with enough good things to say about him, besides he was the second best rookie player period behind Randy Moss since Dilfer came into the league 15 years ago. Now, Dilfer’s not the most gifted QB in the world physically, but he helped win a super bowl with his decision making.

I think the reason Ryan’s getting so much love compared to Ravens rookie QB Joe Flacco is because there’s a legitimate chance MR will lead this team to the playoffs this year and doesn’t have as many “stars” on Defense the way Baltimore does.

Also, there’s just something about Ryan that, as Terry Bradshaw states, that shows he has “it”. That special something only a Tom Brady has, that something no one can really define by mechanics or arm strength.

One thing I do remember when Atlanta drafted him was that scouts were high on his intangibles, which is the difference in wins and losses.

Granted it’s been a team effort, but pretty soon the rest of the NFL will have no choice but to give Atlanta some love.

Besides, outside of playing at New Orleans and San Diego, what other team on their schedule can Atlanta realistically lose to at this point?

Calm down, people! NO was the first good team we beat, and they were without Reggie. Also, please note: contrary to what everyone is saying, we in fact rarely got pressure on Brees, and he sliced and diced our secondary at will. They ran the ball pretty well, too. We’re getting better in some ways, but we aren’t nearly as good as everyone on the bandwagon is saying. Also note how open the NO receivers were as opposed to our receivers, who were making catches in traffic. Credit Ryan’s accuracy, and credit the O-line, who have performed miraculously given their talent level. We’re still about a 6-10 team, who will do better than that this year.

When Saturday Night Live first started the actors were called the “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” (maybe they still are?). The Atlanta Falcons are also not ready for prime time. Ever since Howard Cossell placed his curse on the Falcons (“You won’t find any bad teams, like the Atlanta Falcons playing on Monday Night Football.”), they have run silently through good seasons (when they could manage good seasons), only to become the following year’s darlings, when they immediately fell flat on their faces on national games (Monday, Sunday, Thursday nights, even 4:15 change of starts). That includes the years they had a player named Prime Time. The Falcons are really “the Deer” (same word acts as singular and plural), which causes them to freeze in headlights. All this mid-season attention and love will certainly test their ability to win the rest of the year.

Greg—by this point in the season, there are no teams who aren’t their records in the NFL. If the Falcons lose all 7 of their remaining games, then they will be a 6-10 team. Drink a beer or something, dude. You need to lighten up, big time.

“Rarely got pressure on Brees”? Apparently we saw completely different games.

And if the Saints’ receivers were so wide open, why didn’t they think to run into the end zone more often? To reiterate: 58 passes, two touchdowns (one of those on the last play of the game, the other on a screen with 10 minutes to go).

Thanks, Mark, you beat me to the punch for Greg. What game were you watching? The one I saw showed great improvement in coverages, especially with the defining play of Foxworth. I agree there were times in the 2nd half when Breeze had a long time to throw, but they were mostly in nickel and dime formations or were running zone blitz schemes. Didn’t you notice the play where Breez tried to get a screen off, but could not because the entire D-line just backed off their rush and scuttled the line of scrimmage? They all knew Breez wasn’t going anywhere, so just cut off his throwing angles. C’mon, Greg, take your eyes off the ball every now and then if you wanna contribute.

Greg is correct. Breez got over 400 yards in the air. The saints are in last place, not even a .500 team.

However, the Falcons keep finding ways to win. And we cant forget injuries. Falcons have to stay healthy.

But know this: I’m not getting my heart broken again by Falcons. It takes too long to get over it. Sorry.

I’ll believe the playoffs when I see the playoffs.

till then, they’re just an enjoyable sunday afternoon television show.

Hey Y’all:

“ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!” That’s what I saw:”ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!”

Hey, the Falcons again played together on offense, defense, special teams, coaching, and the fans, the fans were great. We all played with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”

Our young defensive backs are getting better each game. That is why they were shutting down New Orleans recievers. I mentioned before that once our young guys get in sink the league is going to be in trouble. Right now they are. Lawyer Milloy now have a group of young guys back there with him who are following his lead and playing their role. the are playing fearless and aggressive and starting to play with that “SWAG”. I am loving it. I know Lawyer is a proud daddy with his young guns starting to play on par with his game of covering and hitting.

On the other hand oour offensive and defensive line, “THE MOVING COMPANY”, are doing one hell of a job of moving people out the way and prtecting the quarterback and opening holes while the defensive line is making stops and popping the hell out of running back and quarterbacks. “THE MOVING COMPANY” is are not taking any prisoners and they are making its heaven for the linebackers to pop those backs and receivers. They are playing with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”.

The coaches did one hell of a job having our players prepared on offensive and defense. New Orleans did not know what hit them. Offensively, the Falcons mixed it up and ran great plays for the running backs and receivers. What an excellent game plan. It appears everything they wanted to do worked to a “T”. I am very impressed with the football knowledge among the Falcon coaches. It appears they are having fun doing what they are doing and it has extended to the players and the fans. They are coaching with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!” And I love it.

With all these home games coming up the leauge and those teams in our conference better expect an “A Game” from our falcons when the step inot “OUR HOUSE”. We won’t be jiving and we will be taking heads off and scoring touchdown. We owe it to them for our exile the last 2 years. We will do it with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! This is a SECRET from a FALCON FAN. TELL EVERYBODY.

GO FALCONS!!!!!!

SEE Y’ALL IN “OUR HOUSE”:THE GEORGIA DOME.

This has been a great year so far for the Falcons and Hawks, I only have 1 complaint…..and its the fans. I live 4 hours from ATL but always attend at least one game a year, and was at Hawks game 6 during the playoffs. Why is the Dome and Philips not packed every game?!?!?!? How many BAD teams pack their stadiums every week??? We have a 6-3 team and there are thousands of empty seats?? Come on ATL, support your teams!!!

Some comments on the Falcons:

I agree with you Mark about Michael Boley. He started the season as a non-factor, but the past 4 or 5 games, I have seen him either making a key tackle or covering someone out of the backfield quite often. Michael had a huge season last year, and he is coming on strong again this year.

While not a playmaker (yet), Jamaal Anderson is also coming on strong lately. Lofton has been huge as a rookie player. Chris Houston is coming up huge too, and I saw something yesterday that put a smile on my face. Too many times, the Falcons DB’s play WAY too soft, allowing for any team that wants to, to throw 5-7 yard slant passes on us all day long. Houston was playing press coverage quite a bit on Golston or Henderson or whomever he was covering!! Dominique Foxworth did one heck of a job yesterday. Brent Grimes is serviceable. Chevis Jackson, had a huge INT yesterday, and almost had another one yesterday. Coleman looking good, and Lawyer Milloy has been huge quite a bit. The defense is looking up!

On offense, Matt Ryan!! WOW!!! One of the announcers said yesterday that he may be the best rookie QB since Peyton Manning. He is putting up better numbers than even Peyton did in his rookie year. Peyton may have Matt on TD passes his rookie year, but Matt is online in yards and has only thrown 5 INT’s. Peyton threw 28. Mark, your comparison to Dan Marino is compatible… Matty has him in Yards, is right in line on TD passes, and Marino only threw 6 INT’s his rookie year (outstanding).

Other offense, Michael Jenkins is coming up huge as a great compliment to Roddy White. Having Finneran back has come up big in more than one situation. Harry Douglas looks to be a great addition to this team as well.

Coming into this season, the OL was supposedly a weakness, they sure aren’t playing like a weakness.

Exciting times here in ATL for football!!

Yeah, NO had some wide open receivers… only thing was they were wearing red and black. I agree that there was pressure on Brees…or does he just run around and drop back 25 yards off the line for the heck of it?? We can’t say they are or aren’t going to the playoffs, but they sure are doing better than ever imagined, and congrats to them for that.

As for the Hawks, I haven’t been a Hawks fan since management decided to trade Dominique for Danny Manning. I followed them somewhat with Mookie and others, but not much. I bought into them last year and was disappointed. Disappointed until the Celtics series. I thought for sure they would be swept in four to Boston. What an entertaining series!!

This year, they look more like a team than they did at any other time last year (and that includes the Boston series). Last year it was Joe Johnson, if he had a big game, the Hawks usually won. This year, they seem to mesh better together. And, the last two games, we have won with Josh Smith (last year, I am pretty sure this team would’ve tanked with that type of injury to a key player).

If you haven’t been watching the Hawks this year, you need to start watching. They are exciting!

Look Greg never played football and Ornithologist never caught a cold much less a ball.

This is what good football teams do. Control the ball with your offense, score more points than the other team. Very simple, remember these are athletes we talk about not brain surgeons. No need to throw the ball around when you can run it an get first downs.

As for the Hawks, I told you guys MIKE is a good coach. He is actually teaches down there, what a premise. He’ll also get better with his game calls just you wait and see. Who else beat the Celts last year late. Nobody!

Brad,

The Hawks have only had two home games and they sold both of those out. Not sure what games you were watching with empty seats. The game on Friday had empty seats during the first quarter and if you ever driven on a Friday evening in Atlanta you would know why.

The Dome was sold out yesterday as well but we still had some no shows. Got to fill those seats.

Also Mark, how about some love to the Thrashers? They have won 4 in a row and now are only 4 points out of first place! Add to the fact that the Braves are trying to get Jake Peavy and it’s a great time for Atlanta sports!

The Falcons are great and so is Matt Ryan. Ryan represents a QB who comes into the NFL with tremendous abilities and outstanding gifts. Matt ALREADY KNOWS how to throw the deep ball with touch and accuracy whereas Mike Vick, on the other hand, labored 7 or 8 years and still couldnt throw the deep ball consistently accurate. I am of the opinion that you can either throw the deep ball or you cant. I dont think you learn at the pro level to throw the deep ball. You either know how to throw it when you come into the NFL or you will never know how to throw it at a polished and consistent level. Ive always maintained about Mike Vick that he would NEVER LEARN TO THROW THE DEEP BALL. And as it turned out I was right because Vick could never throw that deep pass as good as Ryan or Steve Bartkowski could throw it. I didnt mean to harp on Vick but we now have a big league quarterback in Matt Ryan with skills as good as Peyton Manning. I was amazed yesterday how Ryan outgunned Drew Breeze and Breeze is about as good as they come. The only problem with Drew Breeze though is that the Saints are one-dimensional with Reggie Bush out so I knew Breeze would be slinging the ball all afternoon long. So I believe after watching the Saints get blasted yesterday that the sky is the limit for the Falcons now as long as they believe in themselves and believe in each other.

Dang man the only reason why Brees even had over 400 yards was because the defense werent playing to win since we had such at least a two score lead. That is what teams do in the latter part of the game, they play the DB’s back and give up the underneath plays to avoid a quick score. And that last play was just a hail mary lucky bounce. Those yards were by the Saints were a bit inflated and no they cant run the ball as Brees admitted. Come on guys give props were props are due. No one is saying how bad the Saints defense was in giving up 34 points and getting pounded with the run game

To the person who asked why the Falcons play conservative in the second half: Clock. burn that clock, pal. Run. Run. and more run.

It’s called winning strategy. This coach and this Quarterback came out of nowhere, some sort of miracle that Blank managed in spite of himself.

We can win the superbowl, except I’m not believing it or throwing my heart in the ring because I’m too old to get it stomped on by a wounded duck with ten seconds left and an interception in the end zone.

How about a little love for the Thrashers too? 4 straight wins - 3 in regulation and 2 against division leaders on the road is pretty good.

By the way, broke out all sorts of research material and have come to the conclusion that yesterday’s wins by all 3 pro Atlanta sports teams is the first time in the cities history that 3 pro teams all won on a Sunday. Granted, they don’t all play on a Sunday very often, but still - something that’s NEVER happened to a city in it’s professional sports life??? Pretty good day!!

And what’s the deal with Weiner? I saw no update as to what his injury was. And for the matter, what’s the status on Sam Baker?

I’ve heard a few posters mention how Brees shredded the D - referencing all the yards he threw for. What I didn’t know until today is that he got over 300 yards in the 4th quarter when Falcs were in control and playing the good ole “prevent” D. Coach Smith was very happy with D effor that got them the dominant lead and indicated those #s were deceptive. Note - they only had 2 field goals going into the 4th!!

plussizemodel, Matt Ryan makes the O-line look better by taking his drops and getting the ball out on time. He has great pocket awareness for a rookie and knows where to go in the pocket to step away from the pressure, this is something we haven’t seen in a very long time. Another thing, the defensive backs looked outstanding yesterday. They haven’t played this well all year. Forget the 500+ yards and 2 TDS. They had 3 Ints and 1 TD themselves. Not to mention Brees did throw 58 times and most of the yards came in the 4th quarter.

Knowing that Brees was going to move the ball, our defense committed to a bend but don’t break style yesterday and it worked to perfection. They stopped the run, allowed them to throw, didn’t allow RAC yards and stopped NO in the red zone. I thought it was a well-played, well-coached game all-around.

Say what you want, hate if you want, complain if you want about who we beat with what records, who threw for so many yards, how many seats were filled, how many play makers we do or don’t have, how we pads leads and take it easy, who we shouldn’t have let go to Greece, who is washed up or who isn’t, what former quarterback you still hate, who is a good coach or not, what defense we shouldn’t play, who is a bandwagon fan, who is not, what analyst shows us love, which ones don’t, who was ranked ahead of us in the power rankings, who we shouldn’t have drafted, who we should, who gets paid too much, who doesn’t get paid enough but the bottom line is:

BOTH THE FALCONS AND HAWKS ARE WINNING!

Sit back and enjoy this folks because as a lonnnnnng time fan of both teams this does NOT happen often. Don’t get ahead of ourselves? Just the mere fact that is said is proof positive that we should. Honk your horn, jump up and down, shout cheers of joy! Be positive for once. We’ve had MORE than our share of reasons to be negative nancys over the years or rather decades so go ahead and lose yourself this may never happen again. The fact that both teams are young though may prove the previous statement and wrong and for all our sakes I hope so!

Thanx for jinxing the Hawks and Falcon’s seasons with premature cheer, VentKing and Shamus.

Cheers like that are only appropriate apres-superbowl.

The hawks can go soak their heads. It’s too early to tell diddle dang piddle poo.

The Falcons haven’t beaten anybody but .500 teams. It’s like the braves can play .500 and still make the playoffs. SO what? They still stink.

The Rude awakening has already happened with the Falcons early. We’re about to schedule tuff, and more rudeness awaits Ryan and the dirty birds of pray.

Another Hawks-related update: Marty Burns of SI.com now has them No. 3 in his newest power rankings.

That the early naysayers have now jumped on the Falcons’ bandwagon doesn’t bother me so much. It just proves that they were wrong, and I was right: The Falcons are a much better team than they were given credit for. Can you say playoffs? HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK! HONK!

I swore before the season started that I wouldn’t care about Falcons games anymore. Then, in that very first game, it happened to be on TV while I was doing some computer work, and as it went on, I couldn’t stop watching it; then finally cheering it. Folks, we finally have a team that LOOKs like a pro football team when it plays! I am just going to enjoy it, game by game, play by play.

Tom Becker- I control my own destiny and so do both the Falcons and Hawks…superstitious jinxes exist only to those caught in the matrix.

GO FALCONS AND HAWKS!!!
