Hawks making it look easy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a basketball team. This will be a difficult notion for some among us to accept, seeing as how we’ve spent the past decade lampooning the Hawks, but here it is November 2008 and change has come.
We have ourselves a team, and we know this because the team is unbeaten against four opponents that figured to be better than these Hawks. In the span of 10 days they’ve taken on Dwight Howard and Elton Brand and Chris Paul and Chris Bosh and have run the star-spangled table.
They’re 4-0, having dominated three of the games, and in the fourth they overrode a 23-point deficit. They’re 4-0, and they’ve won 12 of the 16 quarters. They’ve assembled a really good starting five, which we knew already, and their second unit has also become something to behold, which absolutely nobody other than Rick Sund would have guessed.
A confession: From force of habit, I keep expecting to see J.R. Rider slumping on the baseline or Jason Terry throwing the ball away or Billy Knight drafting somebody else named Williams. I keep expecting to wake up and find that these Hawks are a real dream team, as in utterly imaginary. But then I watch another game and see the Hawks flex another set of muscles and I tell myself, “This is really happening.”
On Wednesday the Hawks went to New Orleans and whipped a team that hadn’t lost, and on Friday they undressed the Raptors, who arrived at Philips Arena a robust 3-1. The Hawks led Toronto 10-2 after 3 1/2 minutes, and in a sport built for comebacks, the visitors never stirred.
The Hawks kept raining treys and blocking shots and running the floor, and even with Josh Smith absent for the final three quarters (high ankle sprain) and Al Horford and Zaza Pachulia in foul trouble, the lead only grew. Solomon Jones and Randolph Morris provided worthwhile minutes against Bosh and Jermaine O’Neal, and when it was done, the Hawks had won breezing.
Every night brings a mini-revelation. Pachulia was splendid in the first two games, and the newcomer Flip Murray has been a shining asset from the first. And the Hawks’ defense has grown a new set of teeth — four years on, we’re seeing why Mike Woodson was considered a defensive coach — and the offense continues to develop in the nicest ways.
To wit: Mike Bibby made five 3-pointers in the first half Friday, and four came off feeds from Joe Johnson. “If [defenders] stay at home, Joe can hurt you,” Woodson said. “And if you double him, he knows our other guys can all make shots.”
Said Bibby: “We’re playing off Joe. We help each other.”
When you play the way the Hawks have, basketball can look easy. Past seasons have been squandered because simplicity yielded to ostentation, but this one won’t be. The Hawks are going to lose some games — even the greatest team in NBA history lost 10 times — but they aren’t going to fall on their face. They’re too well-rounded, too tough-minded.
Yes, we’re talking about the Hawks. Yes, really. “We’re trying to play for something here,” Woodson had said before Friday’s game, and it shows.
Too many times we Atlantans have been built up to be let down. Michael Vick wins a playoff game at Lambeau Field but breaks his leg in August. The Thrashers win their division but start the next season 0-6. We had no way of knowing how these Hawks would handle their first taste of success, but now we see. They liked it. They liked it so much they want more, more, more.

Even though Josh went down with the ankle sprain the guys rose up and played a team game which in this long season is what its gonna take. I can see this as a positive cause its gonna make everybody else better. The bench will get more minutes which will allow the team as a whole to develop more chemistry. What ya think?

I totally agree. They are playing better than I ever thought they could, I live in Florida, and have had League pass for 2 yrs. This year I am glad to pay for it. By the way not signing Chilldress, doesn’t look so bad with the signing of Murray & Evans. God bless

Man when Josh left the game i have to admit, I thought the guys might get down in the dumps and lose focus. But they didn’t. They kept the train rolling and the bench was just amazing! Everyone did well. I was glad to see Solo get some clock and be effective. The FlipMo Squad is awsome and Zaza is playing like a new man. We actually have scorers on our bench now which is so refreshing to see.

I said last year that the Hawks were one or two players away. The 4-0 start is credit to Mike Woodson and his selling the team on Defense. I don’t care what sport you play….DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. I’m glad the Hawks have a group of players that are believeing in this FACT. JOE,MIKE,AL,Marvin,Josh,Flip,Moe,ZaZa,Solo,A/C,Mario,Randolph and speedy will reap the benefit from TEAM DEFENSE.

I’ve been supporting the Hawks in Missouri for a few years now since 06-07 season so to see now what is going on with these Hawks is the reason why i liked them because of what their doing now. People thought i WAS crazy the last couple years for liking them here since MO doesn’t have a NBA team but now they see no more jokes because the Hawks are contenders. I know it’s early but to respond the way they did after J-Smoove went down, the way the whole team did, shows alot of maturity and determination from a young team. So overall keep up the good work and the Hawks do have supporters in the “Show me State” Go Hawks!!!!!

What can I say? I’m surprised, too. With their early schedule, I thought it was more likely the Hawks would be 1-3 than 4-0. But that’s the impressive part — they’re not beating the Grizzlies and the T’Wolves. They’re beating real teams.

Mark,
I would have liked to see you make a reference to the 4-1 start the Hawks had 2 years ago - before collapsing, and why this is different. I know there are obvious reasons why, but as a Hawk fan, I have to remain just a bit on the cautious side… to say the least.

WOW…For the last 2 years I have looked at the Hawks the way I look at the Falcons now. We have the right coach and we we were getting great picks. I even liked the move of Acie Law and Al Horford, becase we finally got a true Point and we also picked up a polished, if not undersized post player in one round. I think getting Bibby was the icing on the cake. A great posint guard and an experienced point without breaking the bank. How does this compare with the Falcons? Well as we were growing…and losing (but the Falcons are winning) The rest of the league wss scared to death to play us. They knew we were close, but they also knew at crunch time they would pull it out against such a young team. Well no more in both cases of the Hawks and Falcons For what it’s worth, I thought Woodson did an excellent job with the talent he was given, now, since he worked our guys harder than anyone else, it’s starting to pay off. Now we feel we can beat most anybody. And the other teams know it too…

4-0 against playoff teams. Teams like the sixers and hornets who some have predicted could go to the NBA finals this year. What a great team.
I’m having a ball watching this team play good TEAM basketball. Too many teams in the NBA are all about a star player. Not this Hawks team. They remind me of a good college team and that’s a good thing.

The best part of the game and indication of the caliber of the guys and their basketball acumen was when Joe Johnson had the ball and was open for a shot. Joe chose to knowingly pass to a wide open Mike Bibby because he had the hot hand and Mike rewarded Joe’s unselfishness with another 3 for the team. The Hawks are fun to watch because everyone off the bench seems to contribute. Wow, as a fan you look forward to the next game unlike some previous seasons.

Perhaps all we have left is sports. Hawks havent played five games and already Bradley sees five michael jordans. After the Bulldog fiasco, one expects more conservative appraisals of early season performances.
I guess is good to be positive, but credibility, people, credibility. It would be nice to read a column by a sportswriter who has authority beyond the roster and the rules.
There was a Hawk in my backyard last summer. I would feed him with captured chipmunks that I’d leave tied to a small tree hanging by it’s rear legs. As the hawk got larger, I’d switch to larger animals like squirrel, possums, and racoons. Then, I finally got rid of that obnoxious barking dog that’s been torturing my wife for the past ten years. The hawk got so big that suddenly cats, dogs, and small ponies weren’t enough for it, and I realized I had created a monster. Oh, what a creature this bird had become. It had big black talons the size of BBQ tongs. It’s beak looked like the jaws of life. It’s wingspan covered my entire deck. Then, one day……
Let’s keep our feet on the ground about Atlanta franchises, thank you.

Tom lay off the purp man and uh… try some sleep(lol)! The Hawks are playing great. I don’t often post but I do spend alot of time and money supporting this time. I tell everyone who will listen to go see this team. They are for real. The Hawks struggled with all these teams last year. I’m willing to bet they had a losing record against those combined squads. What this TEAM is doing this year is extremely CREDIBLE! Lay off the smoke and watch some real birds!

This is the year of the hawks, they are 12 to 15 strong, everyone knows they roles. it about the team not just one single player. The Hawks are one. They battle to the end , the hustle, they play team D, they are talking to one another out there. It is early, the sky is the limit with this team. They have come together, they are still young, getting the other veterans helped. Way to go Rick Sund, with your flip and mo signing. The hawks have a strong bench to go with their starting five.

This is fun. Let,s get this out before it happens. (It feels good to say that) THE HAWKS WILL LOSE GAMES!!! It’s an 82 game regular season, and a 50 win season is good. Let’s keep this in mind when the Hawks do lose. But right now, this is Great!!! No last second 3 point shots, no ” if so & so wasn’t hurt ” wins. Just plain old fashion whippin’s, beat downs, trips to the woodshed, boodie spanks, pimp slaps… you know what I mean. GO HAWKS!!!

I think the single most important part of the success of the Hawks, to me goes back to last season in the playoffs and playing against the best team in the league. They seem to still play with the same intensity and passion they did in the playoffs. Its like every game is meaningful. They are outhustling and just outplaying their opponents. And it proves that playing in the playoffs has triggered hunger in these young Hawks. Flip Murray is a proven scorer and Mo Evans is that sharp shooter off the bench every team needs to be successful in this league. We have shooters now, and its paying off nicely. We are going to miss J.Smith a few weeks, but I have no doubt that if we continue to play like we did last night without him, we will be just fine. This season is setting up to be a very exciting season…
GO HAWKS!!!

“So what’s going on with Mike Conley? He’s not injured. ‘That question requires reflection,’ Griz coach Marc Iavaroni said after benching Conley for the entire fourth quarter of a 96-86 loss Saturday at Chicago. ‘Right now, Kyle is playing with more energy and physicality so I’m going with him.’ Iavaroni talked about the need to watch film on Conley something he presumably did Sunday while the Griz took the day off from practice. Conley, meanwhile, reflected and worked on his psyche. The 21-year-old plans to bring a different approach into the Grizzlies’ game against Golden State tonight in FedExForum. ‘It could be a way of making a statement. I look at this as a challenge to me,’ Conley said. ‘It’s one of those things I’m going to have to take to heart. My goal now is to try to earn more playing time and finish out a game.’”
Isn’t that the guy everyone lambasted us for not taking instead of Horford?

NO EXCUSES Seriously, this team has been cranking the engine for the past couple of seasons. It’s safe to say that the engine is running now. This is the same team last year that had some dominant performances against some very good teams - L.A., Denver, Orlando, Dallas, and should have beaten Detroit at the palace. This same team took Boston to 7 games. They have more than proved that they can win against the best. Those of us who have been watching closely have seen this coming. I believe that they have matured and that they can continue to win. If the Hawks do slide later on, there will have to be a tangible reason for it. Because as of right now, they have got absolutely no excuse for going below .500. Let’s go Hawks!

Ladies and gentlemen we FINALLY have a bench! I believe this along with the “coming of age” playoff series against the Celtics have totally changed this team. Maurice Evans and Flip Murray are the truth! And wait a minute, Soloman Jones, Morris, and Acie Law are contributing too. After suffering so long, we have something good finally going on here with this b-ball team. I don’t what it is and wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen with my own eyes cause I didn’t think he could get any better than he already is, but something has gotten into Joe Johnson too. That Iverson-like move he pulled on the baseline making his defender look silly was hilarious! Joe is taking it to the next level and I think it’s because he is finally freed from the pressures of feeling like he has to do it all by himself. He finally knows that somebody (or somebodies) has his back and he can just let it rip now. We are witnessing something beautiful happening here and it’s been a long-time coming. And Mike Bibby, whoa Mike Bibby- if this is what they were talking about how you would play when finally healthy- whew! I feel like a kid in candy store with both the Hawks and Falcons shocking the world and playing like real teams. After so much suffering, Atl fans finally have something to be proud of…
GO HAWKS!!! (and Falcons!)

Marvin has to play big in J-Smooves absence. I still say we win 50+ and the South and make it to at least the semi finals of the east depending on the draw. We have a great team. I wonder if Randolph Morris will get any time now the J-Smoove is out or will it be more Solomon Jones and Zaza. I am drinking the Hawks Kool-Aid. This team is a winner and Joe Johnson is a baller.

A good team will be marked by the way in which it handles adversity. Losing JSmith for 2-4 weeks will give TeamHawks the opportunity to grow deeper as a unit. It happened early in the season, a perfect opportunity to test their strength and to learn from one another as they face adversity.A perfect chance for Coach Woodson to stay the helm and let the crew work the ship. I’m guessing TeamHawks weathers the storm.

Solomon Jones, Solomon Jones, Solomon Jones, do you hear me coach Woodson!!! Everytime he gets in the game he does good things. Last night Solo had more rebounds 9 than anyone on the court, and was tied with Jermaine O’Neal for block shoots 3. The more Mike Woodson trust his bench the better this team will be. As for Josh he is a very quick healer, I say he’ll be back in a week.

The hawks are looking very good, and I have to admit that Mike Woodson is coaching this team to win……..I was surprised…let me say shocked, when Woodson stayed with Flip Murray the whole 4th qtr of the game against New Orleans…I kept waiting for him to put Bibby back in the to finish the game, even though he had been cold the entire game, but he stuck with the hot guy, and it paid huge dividends with the hawks winning the game. And let me also admit that Woodson and the staff obviously did the right thing with not resigning Salim and bringing in Evans and Murray who fit in very nicely with this team…….unbelievably as it sounds but, the hawks, by losing Jchills, Salim, and J. Richardson are actually looking a ton better with Evans and Murray…..whom both are better ball handlers, and shooters……..looks like no more “Woody Woodpecker Show”………….these hawks are for real!!!!

As for as drafting guys named Williams, you need to back up because Marvin did okay last night. Still not graceful by any stretch of anyone’s imagination, but it almost looks like he’s been working with someone who is. That running hook that he’s been trying to use, it reminds me of a shot that another starting Atlanta small forward used back in the day. I wonder…
Anyway, that aside, good article. You better watch yourself Mark. You’re in danger of becoming a decent newspaper man. You better write something bad about one of the home teams just to put the universe back into balance…

Wake up, ESPN!! or is this par for the course for your coverage of breaking news? i thought you were the ultimate bandwagon jumpers. anyone with sense who watched the hawks the last few weeks of last season BEFORE their run against the lordly celtics, could see they were getting it together. who has a better backcourt than bibby and johnson? who has a better all-court player than jsmith? horford shoulda been rookie of the year. marvin will be a nice piece, and the bench is a force. as much criticism as woodson has taken, people forget he was an important influence on the pistons championship teams. acquiring evans and especially murray will transcend the bench. they are 4-0, with all four wins versus contenders and two of them on the road for pete’s sake! they are making hay during what is arguably the toughest early schedule in the league. ESPN, once again you are proving that you have lost any cred that you may have once had.

..then one day, I managed to secret five live chickens into my backyard for the Hawk. The chickens did well fending off the hawk while they were in a zone, but when they switched to man to man, the hawk picked them off one by one…until there was only one chicken left, a rather large Chanticleer named Harvey. Now this bird had managed to survive by hiding in a small cave my dog had dug where the rain had eroded part of the yard into a slight ravine. THe hawk made a few clumsy attempts to storm this palisade, but only to be meet with a flurry of claws and beaks. No longer hungry or motivated, the Hawk found a perch and waited. Harvey wasted no time, I could hear furious activity inside the cave: sticks being broken, rocks clacking, and a strange rubbing sound….what was this free range mutant doing? I didn’t know whether to get my crossbow or not, you know, just in case. It was getting dark, so I figured the action was stalled till morning, and I went inside to watch my box set of Bugs Bunny cartoons. I think that’s about the time my wife left me. Dont worry, she has an older sister…..
In the morning a peculiar thing happened….

I got to watch the entire 2nd half of the Hawks/Celtics game and let me just say that was the most pathetic excuse for NBA officiating that I’ve ever seen. The refs had an agenda to make sure the Hawks didnt continue their unbeaten record any longer than that game in Boston. Pierce got every call under the sun while Hawk after Hawk kept getting hacked everywhere and they wouldnt blow the whistles. The NBA should be ashamed at the officiating from that game and overall. It was absolutely pathetic. The Hawks played a phenomenal game - it was just extremely tough watching them have to suffer that kind of fate.
