This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

No fun when Dogs, Gators refuse to talk

This is no fun. Florida’s not talking. Georgia’s sending out a 700-word statement that’s three months old. This isn’t what we want. We want passion! We want hate! We want the solemn vow that somebody is going to dance in the end zone!

Instead we get the Urban Crier telling reporters, “Let’s move on.” (Funny, I like him better when he’s whining.) We get Mark Richt ordering his players not to talk — “coaching ‘em up,” in his words — about that which everyone else is talking nonstop. Why, it’s enough to make a teetotaler order a round of cocktails.

Toward that end, this teetotaler tried to tempt the Georgia coach. As Richt was leaving the cramped interview room in Baton Rouge, I said, “I’m not saying you don’t have guts, but if you really had guts you’d have your team take a victory lap around the stadium when you score next week.”

And then, playing fast and loose with my dwindling portfolio, I said, “I’ll give you a dollar if you do.”

(Being a stickler for procedure, I subsequently e-mailed Georgia publicist Claude Felton to ask if I’d broken any NCAA rules. His response: “No violation. But don’t make the same offer to the players.”)

Richt being Richt, he was noncommittal regarding this lavish proposal. You know this already, but here it is again: I consider him a really good coach and a really nice guy, and it’s both grossly incongruous and weirdly fitting that his one moment of bad-boy behavior resonates 51 weeks later.

Georgia’s celebration, which didn’t go according to Richt’s script and for which it was penalized twice and for which he keeps apologizing, is the single smartest thing he has done as a coach. It changed the dynamics of a series that, from the Bulldog perspective, was past due for a change. It served its purpose leading into last season’s game, turning his team’s focus from the usual Jacksonville gloom and doom to something brighter — how are we going to celebrate? — and it has become the gift that keeps on giving.

Not quite complying with his coach’s gag order, the famous Tim Tebow admitted to the Orlando Sentinel that the Gators have a photo of the dancing Dogs in their locker room. Think about that: A team that won the 2006 BCS title is concerned with the team that, until 2007, was its personal doormat. And the run-up to this year’s game will be dominated by one line of discussion:

How will the Gators respond? Have they planned something themselves? What if Georgia springs a new “spontaneous” display? Does Urban Meyer have a counter-counter-celebration in his famous playbook? And will Tebow and Co. be so bent on vengeance that they forget to execute those famous plays?

The burden of proof falls on the team that, before last season, had proved it owned Jacksonville. Georgia goes to the land of jacked-up hotel prices with a swagger unseen since Vince Dooley was outcoaching Doug Dickey and Charley Pell.

Maybe these Gators are good enough to reimpose their will on the World’s Largest Outdoor Et Cetera, but suddenly they’re the side that’s reacting. And that’s a major paradigm shift.

The Gators are really good. I believe Georgia is better and will win again, but I am, as you know, often wrong. Only this time I’m on the hook for something tangible: If a victory lap breaks out after Georgia’s first touchdown, I owe somebody a dollar.

My faith is still not in our pass rush and corners, though Gamble’s 2 pick-sixes certainly takes the mind off of that. And another good thing from the LSU game: I didn’t see any touchdown passes over #3’s head this time around.

Yeah, no passes over #3 last week, but we saw #9 miss about 3 tackles that resulted in long TD runs for the Tigers. If it is not one thing with the defense it is another - and, didn’t CMR say that they have moved #3 into the FS position, and isn’t that the same position that #9 plays? Not a good scenario with Harvin and Demps running loose!

I’m cautiously optimistic…I’m a recent Georgia grad and diehard fan, Florida’s leading the league in offense, and aren’t they pretty close to leading it in defense?

And I don’t get why everyone’s getting so excited about the LSU game. They scored 38 and almost had 500 yards against us!

With Stafford, Knowshon, and Green, anything is possible, but Florida’s got me scared

Good God, Bradley, can you pucker up and kiss dog butt any more? This is a pathetic waste of time and energy - are you that void of anything to constructive write about?

This will be 2 great teams with a lot on the line, playing a hard fought game. Get off your idiotic, UGA redneck, Hatfield and McCoy nonsense and stop wasting space pandering to the locals.

As I look around at all the dog fans, it is clear that the vast majority of them could not get into college, much less graduate, and live vicariously through the games.

If everyone listened to you, there would be riots in the stands at the game and you would be happy about it.

Calling on DAWGS at the game in JAX to wave something yellow—“flag”, towel,etc..—let’s taunt the Gator Nation! It’s time for Bulldog Nation to do the EXCESSIVE CELEBRATION!

By DawginLex

This game will be close, no blowout this year. The greatest thing about “Celebration-gate” is that it can never be topped or duplicated. You can’t repeat the enthusiasm from the Dawgs nor can you repeat the open mouths and dropped jaws from the Gators.

Win or lose, “Celebration-gate” can’t be topped. Hopefully Florida will spend this year and the next few years trying to top it and get so worked up that they lose their composure. Either way, Richt wins-he is in their heads and the rivalry gets even hotter.

We can’t pass rush, so we either blitz to put pressure on Tebow and leave our backs in man coverage against those receivers, or we rush four and give Tebow ten minutes for one of the receivers to get open. We’re going to have to score a lot of points or it’s going to be a long day.

Georgia’s total yardage defense is almost exactly where we were this time last year, although our run numbers have improved and pass numbers have declined. Our offense has improved considerably. The offensive run numbers are about the same. The offensive passing numbers are up.

Florida’s offensive numbers are down some from last year. Their defense has improved considerably. Their run defense per game is almost exactly where they were to the yard last year. Their pass defense numbers are significantly better than they were last year, with almost 90 yards per game improvement.

This is Florida’s 6th game in a row without a break and Georgia’s fourth. Florida is hot. So is Georgia.

This game looks really even to me. I do believe Georgia has more depth. And Florida has to be exhausted from running up and down the field last week against Kentucky.

La Jolla Dawg: I must be immature, too, because I get a kick out of typing the words “Urban Crier.” (For the record, I’ve met the man, and he was nice enough to me. But I do think he whines a lot.)

And I’ll share an observation that AJC Digital editor Scott Peacocke made yesterday: Georgia’s smallish defense is probably better-suited to working against Florida’s quickness than against the brute power of Alabama and LSU. I heard him say that, and I said, “Know what? You’re exactly right.”

…the single smartest thing he has done as a coach? That was one of the dumbest things I have ever seen coach do. Take a poll of all major head coaches and ask them if that was a smart move or a dumb move. Even Richt would vote dumb. That could have tuned in to a bad deal…

…changed the dynamics of a series? Just because you type something doesn’t make it true. Your getting ahead of yourself. What if UGA loses the next 5 years in a row? I’ll agree with that statement if the Dawgs can win 2 or 3 in a row.

…the gift that keeps on giving? Once again you are getting ahead of yourself. It hasn’t given anything. The Dawgs won last year, but that was because they scored more points than the Gators not because they acted like a team that has never scored a TD against the Gators before.

You are proud and are gloating over something that you should be embarrassed and ashamed about on so many different levels. That’s Georgia though, the Lennie Small of college football.

Here is an idea – write about two very good teams, both hitting their strides in a game with 50/50 split in attendance it has everything a real college football fan wants. No one but lazy sports writers care about ‘trash talking’ before a game. Fans from both sides should be pumped up to watch what should be a GREAT game. (Maybe Bradley should go to the Big 10 to look for trash talking in lieu of discussing great football).

I am not buying into the high scoring in this game everyone is projecting. A real old-fashioned slobber-knocker, Tebow scores a late TD to win it for UF 24-17. And neither UF or UGA do any ‘celebration’ or retaliation. Both Urban and Richt know how on edge and flag-happy the refs will be if anything were to take place.

My guess is that Urban Crier is planning a few motivational gimmicks, such as going for it consistantly on 4th down or going for the two point conversion, upon every score, just to intimidate the Dawgs. Hopefully, Richt will prepare them for such foolery and keep them focused on Xs and Os.

Mark—the victory lap idea is a good one but also consider my idea below. Also, I agree Richt is a really nice guy, a really good man. He believes in God and stuff like that. A really good man. He prays a lot too because he knows that God favors those who pray and stuff and hates the ones who don’t. That’s why Richt prays a lot. I mean besides being a naturally nice, really good man. What has Urban Meyer ever done but whine? Know what I mean? He’s nothing like Richt who is a really good man. Very religious. And likes to pray.

But I would also like to point out that there would have to be two or more consecutive games of a new trend to support the idea that the dynamics in Jacksonville have changed. The concept is as cognitively empty as “momentum.” As far as “paradigm shift” is concerned, you might try reading Kuhn before you get too carried away with that idea in discussing football. Stick with “thinging outside of the box” or “thrown under the bus” and similar idiocy.

Here’s my idea: Richt and his assistant coaches, the cheerleaders and those players who do not have a police record (at least half of the squad) should charge the field after Georgia’s first score, if they score, and celebrate in an orgiastic ecstacy. But your idea is good—they could just as well do a lap around the field. Or two. Your pal, Leland

Mark, I hope you and the digital editor are right. But I’ve witnessed our corners get burned so much, combined with pitiful, diving, one armed tackle attempts, that I cannot put faith in our pass defense just yet.
While leaving the Tennessee game, I spoke with my friend that if we do indeed win the national championship, I likened it to the NY Giants run last year. Fans criticized and did not have faith in their team, and thus you ruin the championship run with having to stomach uninspiring play. I want this team to click. I want this team to pull it all together and play like a true championship caliber team and leave no room for the fans to doubt.

Here’s a little secret. Every possible means of communication known to man … land phones, faxes, email, instant messaging, cell phones, telegraphs, satellite phones, overnight delivery, US postal service, bicycles, scooters, segways, rickshaws, pony express, airways, underground tunnels, smoke signals, radio, TV, “Beam Me Up” paths through the ether, and even face-to-face contact, will be used this week between the SEC office, the SEC football officials office, the NCAA, AND the head coach’s and AD’s offices in Athens and Gainesville, in order that one message is relayed to and received by Mssrs. Richt and Meyer ….

ANY celebrations or unorthodox methods of motivating your team before, during and after this week’s game will not be allowed or tolerated, and any infraction will mean that you, your AD, your school president, your team captains, and all of your seniors, will be thrown out of the game and the stadium this week AND in your game next week.

Don’t you agree, Mr. Bradley? I have it on good authority, almost as good as your sources, that such a stern message (though perhaps modified somewhat) has been and is being sent from and to all of the aforementioned parties.

Wouldn’t it be nice to read about what the SEC and NCAA and the officials (referees) groups are doing and/or saying in this regard? Maybe a story idea in there somewhere?

This game will be as clean and sterile and unvarnished and snow-white as the Virgin Mary herself.

Mark, if you don’t think Florida plays offense with brute power, you have not been watching Florida lately. Florida overpowered LSU with a straight ahead run game. Yes, they are quick, but Demps runs with power even though he is small. And The OL blocks with power. On the D side of the ball, the difference in the Gator D is that they have been playing with brute force and quickness this year. They overpowered both LSU and Kentucky with the powerful, yet quick, defense. So there goes that theory out the window. Florida D line will knock you helment off. So will the LBs and DBs. And, yes, they are quick and fast, too. Florida can line up and knock heads with anyone this year. Then they will run by you. So, Bradley, it might help if you know something about Florida football this year before you say the Gators are just a quick team. I think Brandon Spikes and the gang will whole heartedly disagree with your thinking.

All trash talking aside this game looks to be pretty even and will probably be decided late - hopefully by a great play and not a mistake. What worries me most is how the officials will act. Maybe I’m being paranoid but it seems to me that a lot of Georgia’s penalties this year were ticky tacky calls that probably shouldn’t have been called. Hopefully the officials will not be flag happy (against either team) and just let the fellows play ball. May the best team (Georgia hopefully) win!

Trash talk is usually a distraction. If you look at all of the incidents where athletes talk about what they are going to do, they usually FLOP big time. I hope that Georgia is concentrating on their game plan. Focus is important. Look how focused the team was against LSU. Just play the game and get the accolades after the game. My prediction: UGA 34 Florida 28. Tebo throws 2 interceptions that re costly. Moreno runs for over 150 yards for the 3rd game in a row and gets back into the heisman talk. Stafford throws for three scores 2 to AJ and 1 to MM.
