This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Bradley’s Buzz: It’s a celebration!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Who does Georgia play this week, anyway?
Just kidding. You already know. And so did the many voices who weighed in on the Bulldogs’ Baton Rouge beatdown of LSU. Esteemed former colleague Mark Schlabach, who now works for ESPN.com, spun things forward (as we say in the news biz) toward the game in Jacksonville. So did Dave Curtis of Sporting News Today, who delved deep into a certain celebration from yesteryear.
Writing for CBSsports.com, Gary Parrish focused on the maturation of Matthew Stafford, which becomes more evident with each week. Meanwhile, Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun believes the hated Gators are peaking at the right time.
In the Orlando Sentinel, Mike Bianchi reports that Tim Tebow and his mates declined comment about Georgia’s celebration, which Mikey — he’s a friend — takes as a sign the Gators are, you know, ticked. And Stewart Mandel of SI.com opines that “emotion/revenge” will tell the tale of Florida-Georgia.
To which I say: Uh, no. Emotion is a major part of any sport, sure, but execution is a bigger part. It always cracks me up when somebody watching the Super Bowl says, “It will come down to which team wants it more.” No, it won’t. Both teams want it as much as humanly possible, but only one team will make the requisite plays.
So which team has better playmakers? I say Georgia. You might say otherwise.
Les Miles and the English language
As noted by this correspondent last January, LSU coach Les Miles has a flair for verbiage uncommon to most football coaches. And I mean this not sarcastically but sincerely. I appreciate anyone who uses words adroitly.
After the Georgia game, James Varney of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, quoted linguistic Les as using the phrase “has to be comfortably corrected.” And Randy Rosetta of the Baton Rouge Advocate offered this Les-ism: “Losses, no matter how they are configured, are not what you want.”
Me, I say that beats the heck out of “Winning isn’t everything — it’s the only thing.”
Atlanta is a lousy sports town (Part 17)
The only thing new about Ryan McGee’s rip of our fair city on ESPN.com is that it takes us to task for, of all things, not supporting NASCAR. So add racin’ to the list of sports we don’t back with our pocketbooks: The Braves in the postseason, the Hawks in the regular season, the Thrashers in any season, the Falcons if they’re losing, Georgia Tech football, Georgia Tech basketball, Georgia State basketball, the Atlanta Dream and the Atlanta Silverbacks.
Just one thought, though: Has Ryan McGee noticed that everyone’s pocketbook has gotten demonstrably thinner lately?
Little love for your Atlanta Hawks
Wasn’t it only yesterday that the Hawks were supposed to be the rising team in the NBA East? So what the heck happened? Did Josh Childress mean that much?
Apparently so. ESPN.com surveyed its NBA analysts, and six of the 10 are projecting the Hawks, who last season made the playoffs for the first time since 1999, to miss them this time. And it’s worth noting — indeed, it’s rather remarkable — that the name most mentioned by these pundits isn’t Joe Johnson or Al Horford but Josh Childress, who didn’t start but who apparently made quite the impression.
Marc Stein picks the Hawks to finish 12th in the 15-team East, citing concerns about “in-house chemistry.” John Hollinger, who lives in Atlanta, picks them to finish 13th, claiming the bench “is a FEMA disaster zone” without you-know-who.
For an even more revealing assessment, check out this view from an opposing scout, as parlayed by Ian Thomsen of SI.com. The scout isn’t high on Johnson, Mike Bibby, Flip Murray or Maurice Evans, but likes Horford a lot and proclaims himself “a Mike Woodson fan.” (This makes a total of one.)
The scout also contends the Hawks would be better served using Marvin Williams as a sub and says they won’t maximize their potential until Horford plays power forward, as opposed to center. I know two people who vehemently disagree with the latter notion: One is Rick Sund, the Hawks’ new general manager; the other is yours truly.
For the record, the print edition of Sports Illustrated, on stands now, tabs the Hawks 11th in the East — again, out of the playoffs. But Marty Burns of SI.com puts the Hawks 17th overall and eighth in the East in his preseason power ratings. So there’s hope, sort of.

I don’t know why anyone would include Georgia Tech basketball in the list of teams not supported. Every game is sold out.

Funny, the Dream averaged 8,316 per game in their inaugural season, which is right in the middle of the league and pretty damned good for a niche sport. The Hawks were in the bottom third in NBA attendance; the Dream were in the top half of WNBA attendance - and they went 4-30 on the year.
Oh…wait a second…the list of sports above is the list of sports the AJC doesn’t know how to cover. Never mind.

The Hawks deserve the lack of respect. They’ve done nothing to improve themselves other than losing one of their best 4 players. If that sentence makes no sense, well, neither does letting Childress go to Greece.

Mark, been here all 37 years of my life so I have been reading your stuff for years. Years ago I was begging for us to get rid of Mike Fratello cause he wasn’t playing Antoine Carr enough. Now, Mike Woodson isn’t even worth writing about because he’s so outclassed by most coaches, while the Spirit are..well..a pile of excrement. You and I are Hawk fans, but I am still sour on Al Horford at center because there is just no defensive presence on the blocks. Teams score at will down low on the Hawks. Don’t you agree this is a concern?

Not really, Scott. Because there are really only about five true centers in the NBA. But thanks for asking. And thanks for remembering ‘Toine.

I realize that I live in a different world than do sportswriters, but no one in my circle of die-hard Dawgs or Gator friends (I grew up in N. Florida) is talking about last year’s endzone celebration, or Florida’s lame attempt to counter same on their sideline, or Tebow’s tears after the game, or whatever.
Everyone’s wondering who will score more points on Saturday. If there’s any talk going on, it’s about how both offenses are clicking on all cylinders.
There’s also some buzz about Georgia not getting respect as evidenced by being 6.5 point underdogs against a team with an identical record who lost last year’s game (not to mention against Ole Miss at home earlier in the year), and how the underdog often prevails in this series.
I think this is a fabricated, media-hyped story (or non-story). If a mass endzone celebration had occurred in say, 1981, then it would be a big deal. But in today’s hip-hop, trash-talking culture, it hardly registers among the players. In fact, it probably seemed kind of lame at the time. Florida didn’t seem too motivated by it - they had 55 minutes left on the game clock to right the wrong, and didn’t do it. We’re supposed to believe they are motivated by the celebration 12 months later?

Great comments Ed. I want to know why Penn State (#3) is praised for an ugly at best win at Ohio State and the media loves them. While the Dawgs win the first 4 games of the season including wins against ranked opponents and drop in thhe polls, then beat some goos SEC teams (Vandy)(LSU)and have not lost since the Alabama Game, but still are trailing behind Oklahoma and USC in the BCS. I am beginning to think College Football is scripted. Joe Paterno’s squad will be in the BCS Championship game, even if the Dawgs win out the remaining season, and win the SEC Championship. Is the real National Championship going to be played in Atlanta?

I can understand why Florida would be upset about the excessive celebration penalty, but let’s be honest, UGA did not stomp on Florida’s Field. It is a neutral site, so it is not like they guys went and started stomping on The Swamp. Either way, it is their fuel for the fire. I think UGA has to control the clock. The best way to keep them from scoring is to not let the offense on the field. It should be a good game no matter what, but I do expect to see some sort of retaliation tactic for last year, maybe not as large as what the UGA boys did last year, but something will happen when Florida scores.

last year we celebrated for us. it wasn’t done to slap florida in the face, it was a bold confidence move that richt knew would push our team to play at the next level. it worked, it was simply brilliant coaching and only someone outside the match-ups situation/history with no knowledge of college football would deny that.
i expect UF to do “something” because any team that would utterly embarrass another team 63-5 is obviously classless enough to retaliate.

Ed, well said. I figured they were in shock for the rest of the game. We essentialy gave them 7 points after kicking off from the 8 yard line. Then Stafford gift wrapped another 7 with that int. We try to give them the game and they don’t take it. 12 months later they have the dance playing on a loop in their heads.
richmonddawg, I figure Cryer and Tebow will lead the Gators in a nasty riverdance celebration after their first TD.

Lester; Are LSU and Vandy REALLY good teams? I mean…LSU got half a hundred hung on them on TWO consecutive weeks…so how good can they be? And would that be the same Vandy that has lost to MS State, Georgia and Duke all in a row? You beat teams who WERE ranked, but have since proven to be NOT so tough.
I agree that the SEC is typicall the best, but this year (look it up), SEC is 5-5 against other BCS teams, and of the five wins, four are against teams with 3-5 losses.
I agree on Penn State…I don’t think they have the athletes to compete. But if Alabama wins out, they will be playing either a Big 12 team or Texas. The only way Penn State plays is if AL stumbles.
By the way…nice job with the SEC going 0-2 this week against a WEAK ACC. And as for the conspiracy theory about the SEC? Remember…LSU got to play (and rightfully so) for NC with two losses…so find some other argument that MIGHT hold a little water.

I could care less about the imaginary BCS title. Any system based largely on popularity and where you rank at the beginning of the season (see Auburn ‘04) has no credibility with me. Any system where about 1/2 of D1 teams are eliminated before the season even starts because of their lack of stature, or conference affiliation, etc. is really just a joke. Just put that 13th SEC banner on top of Sanford Stadium and I’ll be happy. Beat the Gators and I’ll be happy. Anything beyond that is gravy and luck.

What else can WHINERS do but whine when they get beat? Fla scored three plays later after the Dawgs kicked off from the 7 yard line. So the celebration was negated.
Fla was ahead 17-14 with 7:11 left in the second quarter.
UGA settled down and gave the gators a good old fashioned b@## kicking in the second half. Fla had 2 and 1/2 quarters to get revenge and couldn’t do it. Will eleven months of whining help them this year?
Dawgs will continue their “business like ” approach to this game like they did for ASU and LSU. Go Dawgs!!!!
By Lester

Mr. Blue
Thanks for the comment, but your memory seems to be a little biased. When UGA played Vandy and LSU both of those teams were ranked. USC was beaten by a non-ranked Oregon State (who is still unranked). They are now ahead of us. Oklahoma only dropped a few spots after loosing to Texas. UGA dropped in the polls after winning it’s first 4 games. Then UGA dropped out of the top 10 after losing to Alabama, and has beaten 2 ranked (Sat will make 3)opponents since. Penn State has only beaten 1 ranked team this season, Ohio State, and barely won! Ohio State lost big time to USC. Last year LSU won the SEC and manhandled Ohio State in the NC. I do realize that maybe Vandy and LSU are not top tier teams this year, but they are still SEC rivals and when we played them they were ranked opponents. My point is this Blue, Why does Penn State get praised for beating a mediocre Ohio State, I mean have you heard the ESPN reporters and the sports writers on SI.com? The answer is because it’s Joe PA’s last year and the media wants them in the NC game. I’ll bet my paycheck that if Penn State wins out, they will play in the NC game despite a 1 loss Big-12 or SEC team. Both conference champions who play a championship game and win even if they have a loss will get screwed. Don’t be suprised if it’s USC vs. Penn State. By the way how’s that Michigan Team doing?

2 thing forgotten. That was not what Richt intended for the team to do (that doesn’t mean he didn’t think it was pretty cool afterwards). Also, it was a neutral site, there was no disrespect shown in another’s house.
Also, I would think that Urban Cryer will use other tactics to motivate his players than revenge for the celebration, i.e. controling the East and their own destiny towards another NC.
A one loss or undefeated SEC champ will play in the title game, you can bank on it!!

Lester, the “real” BCS game will be played in Miami. Don’t know who will be in it. Penn State has the easiet road there. Only MSU has a chance against them. But who would have thunk that USC would get beat by Oregon State and UF by Ole Miss? IMO Texas has a tough road. Bama, probably the easiest left after the LSU game. Season isn’t over still alot of football to be played. IF we get another shot at Bama I hope we come to play. That way if anybody else stumbles we at least have a shot. Not an argument but a shot at it. To have no argument is to have no losses. IMO, if you lose, you can’t complain. Just like last year. The only exception to that rule is Les Miles then you can count your loses as OT loses, which only really count in the rest of the country, not Baton Rouge.
The only saving grace to this BCS season is that Ohio State is completely out of it and won’t have to worry about getting spanked by an SEC team again.

I agree with Ed. I also live in North Florida and must deal with the hated gator fans at work all the time. They’ve never once mentioned this year anything about the celebration. I think it is a non-issue. What i do here is comparisons between our playmakers and theirs on offense, and the “improvements” they have made this year on defense. I usually ask them if Tebow has learned how to throw from his back yet, since that’s where he spent last year’s game. It’s a great rivalry that shouldn’t be muddied by blowing a harmless celebration out of proportion. (That goes double for Terence Moore!)

If Georgia’s celbration was going to get Florida mad enough to do something about it, looks like they would have done something about it last year. they had almost 50 minutes of playing time left. I have never put much faith in the “I hate to play somebody after they lost” theaory because “they’ll be MAD.” I like playing people who have just lost because it usually means they aren’t as good. Same thing here. Georgia wins by two touchdowns.

You take away the 2 tds by interception, and you are tied. Granted, that is part of the game. The difference will be the gator defense. The dogs tend to get stronger this time of year though. I’m tired or hearing about the celebration. The Gators got their butts kicked last year and that is just the way it is. If they were so upset, why did’nt they do something about it last year. There were three and a half quarters left after Georgia scored its first touchdown. They got a taste of their own medicine and they did’nt like it. The media will not let the celebration die. We will have to listen to it or read about it all week. I think every time that ESPN has shown a “preview” of this year’s Ga-Fla game, they’ve shown the celebration. They simply can’t get over it. My question is as follows: If Fla was so upset about the celebration, why didn’t they do something about it last year? They had about 3 and a half quarters to get revenge. Why didn’t they? Because it’s all about execution.

Lester, who did Vandy beat to earn their ranking? They NEVER deserved it. They are not a good SEC team and haven’t been one ALL YEAR. The same as LSU hasn’t earned their ranking because they haven’t beaten anyone this year. They lost the SEC Consolation game Saturday and are now the 4th best team in a watered down conference.
I am a Tech fan and we are ranked about where we should be. Saturday’s loss to UVA was no fluke. They beat us on both lines and we could not stop them on 3rd down. Tech fans, we are rebuilding this year.

Tebow might just give you mouth to mouth if you time it right!

UF playmakers- Tebow, Harvin, Brandon James, Demps, Rainey, Moody, Deonte Thompson, Louis Murphy, Aaron Hernandez, what is Bradley thinking? has he ever heard of these guys? Demps is the fastest player to ever play college football based on his recorded time. Moreno, Stafford and Green can’t match all of those players.

The New York Times did an article on Jeff Demps last week. Fastest player ever to play college football! Percy Harvin may be the best player in college football. Bradley is getting to be a bit ridiculous. Bianchi needs to settle him down.

Percy Harvin had 3 touches the entire game against UK and UF still scored 65 points. The reason? So Meyer can show Bradley and other UGA homers what #1 is all about.

Okay, so we’ve had some players who have been arrested for alcohol related incidents. The Gators have had players arrested for stealing dead girls credit cards and discharging AK-47s. So which program has the discipline problem?

The gators are going to be crying on national tv this Saturday because they’ll know that all their fans want this because of last year’s celebration, which they had a chance for payback for 3 1/2 qtrs. It will be fun to watch UGA smash your dreams this week on our way to the SEC CG and possibly the NCG. Come on girls, do you think a team that lost at home to Ole Miss is really going to beat UGA? Get real! UGA 48 uf 10!

KneeJerk,
Vandy beat the Ole Miss team that beat Florida.
Lester — Your top 10 is good but I think Lowndes could beat Penn St., USC, Okie St. & Texas Tech!
And anything Florida tries to do to “retaliate” in this game will be a joke. Georgia is expecting something lame from Timmy T and his band of midgets (aka Florida backfield) and it will not phase them. While this may be a party for us fans, it’s a business trip for the players. We’re going to take care of business.
Georgia Fans: Be ready to dive for cover in Jax. Have a feeling a UF celebration will include firing AK’s in the air.

I think that any fan on either side that just throws out that there respective team is going to roll is living on fantasy Island. being a gator fan am scared to death of this game because I know that UF is facing the only team this season that stands on equal footing with them. I think UGA should feel the same way.
Both teams have game changing playmakers that WILL impact this game. Both teams are also peaking and healthy at the same time as well.
I don’t buy the revenge factor for UF either. It can’t be about that. Michigan was a revenge game and so was Auburn last year. Teams can’t get caught up in that nonsense becausr one year has nothing to do with the next. We need to beat UGA because it gets us to atlanta not because we want revenge over a loss from the year before.
I hope that the game is the heavyweight fight that it is being hyped to be. UF is no LSU and UF needs to understand the same applies for UGA. Good luck to you dawgs, and all fans UF and UGA alike should enjoy this week because it may not be this big for a while again.

tide rising, you guys need to go back to giving 30+ scholarships per year regardless of whether the athletes qualify for not. That way you’re sure to get enough recruits for King Saban. Of course, the Alabama countryside is littered with those who accepted but couldn’t get in. Nice touch.

I notice a lot of dawg fans talking smack about owning the series record over UF 46-36. Isn’t that “living in the past”?, something yall love to accuse us Bama fans of because of our storied history. But since we’re talking about series records let me give you one. 36-25

Mpe ron. You’re name truly befits a man of your mental stature. Obviously you’ve forgotten a couple of years ago when CMR signed 21 players and only 14 qualified. You aint too bright are ya boy. As for the Alabama countryside being littered with nonqualifiers at least our high school kids weren’t dead last in the country a year ago in SAT scores. That dubious distinction would belong to Georgia. BooooYaahhhhhh!!!!!!

October 27, 2008 11:19 PM | Link to this
Police tonight detained and arrested a number of Alabama football players. The sheer number of unprecedented arrested far eclipsed the the league leading Georgia bulldogs who have 11 players arrested so far this year.
After a month of collecting 92,000 depositions from witnesses police have charged the Alabama football team with the brutal rape of the UGA football team. The sheer brutality of the violent assault was also witnessed by a national television audience. Most of the Bama players were charged but several backups were charged with the lesser crime of aggravated assault. A battered going nowhere Knowshon Moreno suffered an elbow injury, severe humiliation, and physical pain all over his body after rushing for a career low 34 yards. The defiant Alabama team claims that although it will plead guilty to the assaults that they plan to committ the crime all over again in early December if at all possible. It is rumored the Florida Gators will not allow the Dec. 3rd scheduled assault to take place.

tide rising, LMAO. I “ain’t too bright”, huh. First, you misspelled my post name. Duhhhhh! I made it real simple so the Bama fans could relate.
Throw enough junk against the wall and something will stick. At least you’d like to convince yourself of that.
Here’s a verbatim article from the AJC about one of the top players in Georgia this year:
** Ridgeland wide receiver Michael Bowman is determined to play for Georgia, which he said told him they would offer if he raised his test scores. However, Bowman admitted he has a “backup plan” in case things don’t work out with the Bulldogs.
“Georgia is where I want to be, it always has been,” Bowman said. “However, I’m not going to prep school. If Georgia didn’t take me, then I’d go to Auburn or LSU.”**
Ooops! Guess whose scholarship he accepted. That’s right…..Bamer! Smoooooth.

BE#3, Even a blind squirrel (Ole Miss) finds a nut sometimes. Do you really think beating Ole Miss (who scraped by woeful Arkansas) gets you ranked? So…anybody that beats Oregon State should be ranked?
By BE#3
October 28, 2008 12:34 PM | Link to this
KneeJerk,
You asked and I answered. They also beat a Carolina team that is 5-3. Was the Vandy hype warrented? Probably not. But neither was the Tech hype. I mean does beating Gardner Webb by 3 give you cred? There are about 20 high schools in the state of Georgia that would have beat GW by 10 or more points.
It was a good story (Vandy) early in the season and they still have a legit shot of becoming bowl eligible as they have UK, UT and Wake on the schedule.
And 2 of the 3 teams that have beat Oregon State are ranked and are undefeated (Penn St. and Utah).
Ole Miss won in “The Swamp” which is one of the toughest places to play in the country. OSU won at home so Ole Miss does get a little more respect based on where the win took place.
Blah Blah Blah…..who cares about all of this crap anyway? There’s parody all over college football. Your premier conferences are still overall the tops in the land (SEC, Big 12) but there is more balance than ever before.
Just look at the BCS Champs since inception:
SEC: 6 Big 12: 5 ACC: 2 Big 10: 2 Pac 10: 1 Big East: 1
So if a team from the SEC or Big 12 starts off on fire, the media is going to give them extra attention in the early polls (which are BS anyway).

I really get tired of hearing about Urban Crier. I never heard so much whining as I did last year about Georgia not being in the BCS Championship game. Me thinks there’s a little Pot calling the Kettle black here.
Both teams are good this year. I doublt that either one is going to blow the other away. I guess we will have to wait until Saturday to see!
