This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

UGA’s season-defining stretch has arrived
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When we talked about how arduous Georgia’s schedule would be, we didn’t mean the home games. We didn’t even mean consecutive road dates in Columbia and Tempe. We meant this:
Four games in four weeks, none in Athens. The first against the 2007 BCS winner, the second against the 2006 titlist. Plus two more road games after that.
And now the season-defining stretch has arrived. Georgia plays at LSU on Saturday, and if the game isn’t fully make-or-break - the Bulldogs could still win the SEC East if they lose in Baton Rouge - it’s the acid test for any national championship hopes. Beat the Tigers and Georgia is fully in the discussion. Lose and the Sugar Bowl surely becomes a best-case scenario.
As underwhelming as the first seven games have been, they have done the Bulldogs no lasting damage. At No. 7 in the BCS rankings, Georgia is positioned well enough. If it has seldom appeared the best team in the land, the preseason No. 1 still approaches Halloween with all goals intact. Not many expected a team facing this schedule to finish undefeated, and 12-1 with an SEC championship would hoist the Bulldogs near the top of every poll come Dec. 7.
“Yes, sir,” said linebacker Rennie Curran, impolite only on the field. “We’re right where we want to be.”
Think of this closing stretch as September in a pennant drive. If Georgia outruns everybody from here on, nobody will remember how halting its early steps seemed to be. “Hopefully we’ve got the players to do that,” said cornerback Asher Allen, and they do. For all the disarray along the offensive line, nobody in the nation has three better playmakers than Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and A.J. Green.
The Florida game in Jacksonville next week stands to be a test of playmaking. The collision in Tiger Stadium should come down to brute force. When last the Bulldogs faced a team so blunt-edged, they trailed by 31 points after 30 minutes. We’re about to see if they learned from the Alabama indignity.
“I don’t think we’re lining up every down and just executing, just road-grading,” said Mark Richt, speaking of his cobbled-together offensive line after the Vanderbilt game. “I don’t think anybody’s thinking we’re in the groove.”
Grooves, however, are funny things. You can’t know when the groovy feeling is about to arrive. Off the dubious strength of a last-gasp escape from Nashville, did anyone expect the 2007 Bulldogs to embark on a closing burst that carried them to No. 2 in the final Associated Press poll?
Waiting in Baton Rouge is the only team that finished ahead of Georgia last January. Having shed so many players from that championship team, the Tigers weren’t expected to be vintage this time around. But this is a program that has grown skilled at finding ways to win.
When last the Bulldogs entered Tiger Stadium, LSU found a way that rankles Richt still. On Sept. 20, 2003, Georgia had scored the tying touchdown on a 93-yard screen pass to Tyson Browning with 4:25 to play, whereupon Devery Henderson returned the kickoff almost to midfield.
“We’ve got real good film on that,” Richt said. “They just grabbed us — two guys! They just tackled us to the ground.”
No penalty was called. Matt Mauck found Skyler Green for the winning touchdown with 1:22 to play, and LSU was en route to an SEC title and a national championship. Similar destinations could await Georgia if it wins today. The guess here is that it will.

I love the Dawgs but I can’t see how we win against LSU down there, much less next week against UF. As I’ve been saying for 2-3 weeks it won’t be because of the offensive line (they are playing much better). It will be because of the defense (we cannot get any pressure on the opponents QB from anyone other than our linebackers or secondary (no DL or DE)).
I hope Richt gets some quick help in for our defense before next season.
Also I hope I’m wrong about losing! GO DAWGS!

No we will see what these puppies are made of. We will see how much our recruits want to ba a dawg. We will see how good coaches we MAY have. this last stretch Willie and company will have to earn their checks. Now we’ll see how close CMR and Willie truly are, if we falter I bet it will be because of the defense.

Even if we were 7-0, this is the part of the scheule that was in question from the get go. So at 6-1, we still control our own destiny. Yes, we stunk it up with Bama, but we have beat rivals, SC, and Tenn. We are one game ahead of where we were last year. We could win out and play for all the marbles, or we could easily go 8-4, it’s that simple.

Please note we are 24th in total defense in the nation and 40th in total offense. The lack of big plays has hurt us on defense but the main issue has been poor field position related to punt return deficiencies as well as poor punting. We need to decide on 1 punt returner and stick with that returner. The same goes for kickoffs. That being said we have already defeated both teams who beat us last year and are close to breaking through on offense. Lets hope that happens this week. Go Dawgs!

I agree that this is the week we learn what kind of team we have. I don’t agree with Chicagodawg that our defense is a weakness, especially against LSU. The real test will be in the trenches with our struggling OL against their veteran DL. That is what hurt us against Bama, and that is what we face here. If we can make big plays on offense with Matt, Knowshon, AJ and Mohammad; we can overcome our disadvantage on the line. Their offense has been very inconsistent and I believe our defense should be able to keep them in check. If we come out in the first half against LSU the way we came out the 2nd half against Bama, we’ll be fine. Go Dawgs!

“if we falter I bet it will be because of the defense”
We have the 3rd ranked D in the SEC and are top 20 in the nation. Not to be a hater but 21 of the last 28 pts. allowed by our D has been off of OUR giveaways. Yes we seem to have a lull at the end of the 1st half defensively and that must be corrected, but to say our D is the reason for losing is ridiculous. In that 1st half against Bama, all phases of the game were awful.
Willie is the same DC who coached his boys up to sack Tebow all day long, made Brandon Cox look like he was ready to quit playing football and shut up the national media when they were all up on Hawai’i going into the Sugar Bowl. He obviously knows a little more about coaching defense than any of us do.

Georgia is very capable of winning the next two games. LSU is average at best on defense. This isn’t the LSU of the past. Florida has played the weakest schedule to date of any SEC team, and still managed to drop a game. They probably aren’t as good as everyone thinks. It won’t be easy but if the Dawgs man up they can get it done. Its not impossible.

The passing game will be the difference. LSU doesn’t have a good passing game and they don’t do a good job of defending the pass. Georgia has the top passing game in the SEC. It will be hard for both teams to run the ball.

I won’t offer up any words of wisdom, advice, or warnings of imminent doom. Its now ‘make or break’ time, clear and simple. We will see what adjustments have been made, if any, to: 1. Quinn, Great news! If that is the problem, then you will be pleased to know: UGA is #1 in the SEC in punt return, and #2 in punting. I’d say we got the punting thing going pretty good.
Now, we are indeed middle of the pack in kick off Coverage, but trail the top teams by only a few yards, so that not really as big of a deal now as is was early. It actually been pretty good in the past 2 weeks. I’m sure that you noticed that.
BTW, from top(UK) to bottom(LSU) in the SEC for kick off Returns is only 7 yrds per return difference. We are right in the middle.
By Hunk Erdown
October 24, 2008 3:24 PM | Link to this
Both of these teams have played underwhelmingly. UGA has played well against the run, not so good against the pass. LSU has not done well passing.
To me, what this game comes down to is which team plays closer to their potential. UGA has played well enough to win but way below potential. From what I’ve heard LSU is in the same boat.
Who’s gonna step up? Should be one whale of a game.

Tough stretch ?? Are you serious ?? Auburn and Kentucky would lose to a good Div.II school this year. Any very good team like Ala., Fla., or LSU that Georgia is FORCED to play (the NCAA only allows so many State Teacher Colleges on their sched.)………..they lose, not even close. When will someone with a clue figure out that GA. is GROSSLY OVERATED ???? Wake up !!!

I am sick to death of the “disappointing to this point” talk. The only expectations this team hasn’t met are those placed on them by the media. And now Bradley and all the others talk about how GA didnt live up to their hype. As I read your columns all summer and early fall I knew you would be the first to throw the dogs under the bus. The only downside to GA running the table is that you will write your “I KNEW they would be GREAT” article.

Hey Bob, conceptionalize on this…it is because the human pollters (coaches and media) have brains enough to see that one team is better than another. A computer does not have any reasoning skills as far as I know…at least not yet. Stop your moaning Georgia fans because the Dawgs will easily beat LSU. The real game is in Jax. Two very good teams will be knocking heads then. Can’t wait! Bob, keeping on thinking Florida isn’t as good as people think…because you are right…they are much better than people think. And, yes, Janoris Jenkins runs a 4.6 40. But he is one of the fastest in the first 10 yards, and that is where a DB makes his money. And he is also naturally talented, very strong, and a very, very smart football player. He will be playing CB in the pros real soon.

Most of the Einsteins on this blog still just don’t freaking get it! Football games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage, especially in the SEC more so than in any other conference. That is why my Bama mammoths ran over UGA. It is the same reason why LSU, which is every bit as physical as Bama, will steamroll UGA on both sides of the line of scrimmage. You don’t stand a chance.
As for Richt whining about 2 noncall penalties that LSU supposedly committed in a game several years ago it seems to me that he sure has a short memory. As a Bama fan I watched in disbelief as UGA got away with 2 blatant blocks in the back on their punt return against bama which very temporarily put UGA back in the game. Those Bullsheet noncalls and 2 garbage time touchdowns in the final 3 minutes are the only reason that game had a somewhat respectable margin of defeat. And yet u idiots still talk of the 2nd half as if it was some kind of a moral victory even though you got a td you didn’t deserve on the punt return and your last 2 tds were in the last 3 minutes against backups. Give it a rest and stick a fork in the dawgs. Just sit back, drink your kool aid and watch the SEC get decided by the 3 teams that really have a shot at the SEC and or national title Bama, LSU, and Florida. You are no longer relevant!

Learned One - Move on.
You’ve got a #2 ranking and tons of media love ever since that first half a month ago in Athens. Since then, you guys look like the Bama of recent history - very, very ordinary. 9 quarters of uninspired ball. It must be sinking in about now that the first half in Athens was a perfect storm and you guys aren’t anything special. IF you get to the SECCG, Bama will get thrashed.
Worry about UT not UGA. UT is probably as good as Ole Miss and KY. You should have your hands full.

If we lose to LSU we shouldn’t even be ranked. They are not even close to the team they were last year. They almost lost to Auburn which stinks this year.Would WVU dominate SEC? no, so my guess is Auburn stinks and so does all the teams that played close games with them. Florida is a great team, but it is not an away game it is a neutral site. Kentucky has been exposed. 3-1 in four game stretch if Tebow gets hurt then 4-0. Then we have to hope for Penn State losing and Big XII Champion having a couple of loses.

To win the game of football you must be able to run the football and stop the other team from running the football.
Doesn’t matter if it’s LSU or Gardner-Webb. You establish the run to open up the pass.
I beleive Georgia can stop LSU somewhat and LSU will stop the DAWGS somewhat.
If that should happen then it comes down to your skill position players and I think overall we top out. The freshmen have had seven games to get better.
Good thing it’s an afternoon game and not at night and remember that CMR has a way of getting his team ready to play on the road. In a close one the DAWGS prevail 20 - 17.

Look at the next 4 games a little closer.LSU-the only reason LSU was considered a good team is the fact they beat AUB now EVERYBODY now knows that AUB is not a good team. This game wont be as close as people think. If SC had any offensive playmakers they would have won that game easily.Kentucky-nothing there. They have fell back to the Kentucky of old-if all the stars align-THEY MIGHT beat a good team.GA TECH-can u say GARDNER WEB?Are u serious?I am now convinced SC and VANDY would dominate the ACC every year if they were in that conference.AUB-did you SEE the Va Tech game?Which leaves us with FLA- the team we HATE..the team the coaching staff get a little tight in the pants about during game week.the team we Recruit,Design our Offense and Defensive strategy to beat.If you don’t think so go back and watch the last 5 FLA-GA games and see the kids we recruited, the tinkering with our schemes that occur.. tailored for FLA.Last year CMR let it be known UGA has no fear of the gators and he really don’t care if Urban Meyer has a problem with the TD celebration. On the field I say FLA has the same suspect D they had last year and for what ever reason Tebow and co are NOT performing as well.I say the EMOTION will make it a tight game not the talent.I SAY 4-0 with the only good game being in JAX

The problem is the line. Theirs is really good and ours stinks. My guess is that Stafford doesn’t make it through the game unless we’re able to run th eball early and take the pressure off the pass blocking. Otherwise, they’ll blitz us into oblivion, our defense will tire down, and they’ll own the 4th quarter.
