This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Georgia wary of Vols despite record
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Big Orange is no longer so big. Tennessee hasn’t won an SEC title since 1998, hasn’t finished in the Associated Press Top 10 since 2001 and hasn’t beaten Florida since 2004. The only thing the Volunteers remain adept at doing is messing up Georgia’s season.
Tennessee has won three of the past four meetings. Two of those losses — in 2004 and again last year — denied good Georgia teams a chance to play for the conference title. The 2006 game was a 51-33 thrashing that prompted the AJC headline — “Vols Put Dogs In Their Place” — that Gov. Sonny Perdue found odious; more tangibly, it touched off a four-losses-in-five-games reversal that remains the nadir of the Mark Richt era.
On Saturday the Vols will kick off against Georgia bearing a losing record for the first time since 1994, when they were 0-1. Naturally, that team beat the Bulldogs. Not since 2001 has Tennessee entered this game as the higher-ranked team, and lately it hasn’t mattered. Georgia was No. 3 when it lost to the Vols in 2004, No. 10 in 2006 and No. 12 last year.
This time Georgia is a chastened No. 10. The Vols didn’t receive even one vote in either major poll. But Richt, mindful of recent history, lauded Tennessee to the max in his media briefing Tuesday, saying the Vols could be 4-1 as opposed to 2-3 and praising them for their stout effort in a 13-9 victory over … er, Northern Illinois. (It didn’t hurt that Vince Dooley, the king of opponent-trumping-up, was seated in the audience.)
Of his team, Richt said: “We’ve got a wonderful opportunity to turn [this season] around. I see nothing out there that makes me think we won’t turn it around.”
There’s no reason Georgia shouldn’t beat Tennessee handily. (Oddsmakers have installed the Bulldogs as 12-point favorites.) The Vols lost to Florida by 24 points in Knoxville and managed 191 yards against Auburn. Then, having changed quarterbacks, Tennessee mustered 225 yards against … er, Northern Illinois.
Still, the tale of Georgia football in the 21st Century would be rather different if it hadn’t lost to lesser Tennessee teams. When the Bulldogs arrived in Knoxville last October, the belief was that Philip Fulmer had to win the game to save his seat. He won 35-14. (Speaking of job security, former coach Johnny Majors, whom Fulmer shouldered aside in 1992, told the Chattanooga Times Free Press last week: “Frankly, I think [defensive coordinator] John Chavis has saved [Fulmer’s] job for 10 years.”)
The Bulldogs claim not to care about such things. “People may say that [Tennessee spoiled seasons], but that was last year and two years ago,” Knowshon Moreno said. “We’ve got to keep moving forward. This is a new season.”
It was only after being thumped in Knoxville that the 2007 Bulldogs began to find themselves, so in some ways the memory of that loss has been reconfigured as a positive. Said Matthew Stafford, rejecting the point: “I don’t think anyone after that game was thinking, ‘This is going to be a turning point for us.’ “
A year later, an emphatic dismissal of Tennessee could help Georgia right itself after the egregious Alabama game. Said Richt: “This game is huge as to how our season is going to be remembered.”
It’s not that Tennessee is so good anymore. It’s just that it keeps getting in Georgia’s way. “Any loss messes up a season,” said fullback Brannan Southerland, and losing to these underwhelming Vols would derail what still could be a championship run.

Georgia should handle UT with ease — BUT remember that UT had the top recruitment class in 2005 and 4th in 2007 (Scout.com), so they have some very good football players. Beware, the Vols are hurt and angry, they may play their best game.

If we want to re-establish ourselves as a top ranked team we need a very big win. UT has a knack for getting up for the games against UGA and we often have a knack for playing down to lesser teams.
Furthermore, we are not the great team we thought we were. Our weaknesses were obvious even before the Bama Game but we overlooked them because we won until Bama beat us in both trenches.
I believe we will win but by a few points. Pity our talent at QB and Backs cannot be fully used because of our lack of top talent on the OL.
I was in New Orleans for the 1980 NC and I can tell you our O Line that year was one of the biggest, toughest, meanest bunch of froghead bitting monsters in college ball. But ND had a huge and talented D. Dooley found a way to win - It turned out to be one of the greatest NC Defensive Games in history.
In the last three games we have scored 71 points and given up 58 - 41 of those to Bama alone. The D line needs help and in my opinion Martinez should tighten up on pass coverage.

The most telling comment from Richt this week is that the offensive line is starting to look better in practice. I believe we are about to turn the season around and be the team we thought we would be preseason. Frankly, we looked pretty darn good the second half of the Alabama game. The first half was the worst beat down of the Richt era, but a 30 to 10 edge in the second half against a great team like Alabama is a positive.

UGA should win 35-14; however, if we don’t, our coaching staff should all resign on the spot. UT is in a rebuilding mode while we’re trying to compete for a NC. If we do lose, it won’t be because we can’t score…it will be a result of our Div. II defensive coordinator CWM who is “waaaaaaay over his head” in the SEC. Am I the only one concerned about our penalties and the lack of disciple the coaches instill? I hope CMR doesn’t turn us into the Miami or FSU of the SEC…we’ve recruited too many thugs.

This is a dangerous game. While the team is surely looking ahead to the showdown with Vanderbilt, they still have to put the hobnail boot in the Commodores, er… Vols 1st.

First, Georgia is not going to be looking ahead to Vanderbilt! Vandy is going to stumble at Missisippi State this week and I’m sorry, they are still Vandy. This game is all about mindset. If Georgia comes out snarling and angry as they should be off the mega choke against Bama, they’ll hammer the on-life-support Vols. If they come out and get into a grind it out game, its going to be agnoizing. Tennesee has no confidence and few weapons. You take a team like that out early. Martinez need to let his secondary play man so they can get maximum pressure on the QB and running game. Georgia is again this year and has been in the past a very poor cover 2 team. the run oriented linebackers dont get deep enough drops to effectively take away intermediate passes. These next two weeks, Tennessee and Vandy are not going to hurt you deep. Go after them and good things will happen. Sit back and play the lame bend and break and watch a promising season turn mediocre real quick.

Alabama is NOT the best team in the SEC. That’s what hurt the most sitting in Sanford Stadium losing to a team that is lead by John Parker Wilson…sure he holds all of Bama’s records, but he is not a great QB! We got smacked in the mouth out of the gates, gave up too many penalties, and before we knew it, the mountain was to high to climb…Tired of talking about it…tired of hearing them calling us sissies…can’t wait for the rematch. My only prayer is that THEY make it there…which I doubt.
Go Dawgs. GATA for the start!

I picked Georgia to beat Tennessee 27-14 before the season started. The spread still sounds right — 13 points — but I’m not sure the Vols can score 14 points.

UT absolutely ruined UGA’s season last year:
First, by beating us 35-14 Then, by somehow finding a way to win it’s last 3 SEC regular season games Then, by blowing the championship game against LSU
Only 2 teams have scored 50 in Athens…only thing Goff and Richt have in common.
If we are not motivated for this game against UT, then there’s no motivating this bunch…they’ve read too many press clippings about themselves.
We lose this game, and I’ll go back to worrying about the stock market.

31-0 at the half!!!!
DOGS WILL LOSE TO THE VOLS
Here’s why:
Vols defense will make this game ugly - which favors Tennessee.
Vols offense is coming around - OL is a strength and will play a grinding run game to run time off the clock - shorten the game - and keep uga offense on the sideline. Vols will also dink and dunk and find the seams in your soft zone coverage. Look for the short passing game to be a key to keep the Vols alive in this game.
Fat Phil owns uga - and does his best coaching when his back is against the wall.
UGA defense failed against the first physical team they played. Tennessee knows this and will line up to smack UGA in the mouth offensively. Tn brand of football is just physcially tougher than uga - which tries to out athlete their opponents.
UGA offense is not that good - against the 3 real opponents they played this year (first two warm-up games do not count) UGA was lucky to beat SC (scoring only 14 points - looked sluggish against AZ State (had a breakout quarter) but looked sluggish the rest of the game - and was totally humbled against Alabama - being completely shut out in the first half.
Don’t give me that “we scored 30 against Bama in the second half crap” game was over by halftime - yes, UGA executed better in second half - but Bama was all ready home in Tuscaloosa thinking about Sunday dinner at Dreamland BBQ!!!!!
*UGA is young in a the wrong place - your OL - However uga fans - 2009 season and 2010 season - you OL should be very good - if you can keep injuries, dui’s and academics in check.
Game will low scoring knife fight - similar to the SC game. Dawgs will press in 4th quarter as the game will be close and Vols win in the upset.
UGA staring at 6-6 or 7-5 season. Very overated at the beggining of the season. Mid pack SEC team - which is not bad as UGA would be a top 3 team in the Pac 10 and Big 10. Probably 5 or 6th best team in Big 12.
Dogs will lose against - TN, LSU, FL, GT
Dogs will beat Vandy and Auburn.
Toss up game against KY - as this game is sandwiched in between FL and Auburn. This game will be another SC type game.
ROOOOLLLL TIDE!!!!! 31-0 at the HALF!!!!

I’m worry that Willie Martinez will lay a gigantic egg, I’ve never been a fan of him. If VanGorder was our DC in 2005 and 2007 Georgia should have been in the national championship game, and probably won them both. if Tennessee is successful in converting the short yardage passes,i will be furious and I Think all the dawg nation should put pressure on CMR to fire him.we shall see. go dawgs

Coach Willie M. is to conservative. He allows his best players to play a loose zone defense. Stand around and wait. That’s like taking half your players and sitting them on the bench. Bama had much tighter coverage from their D. backs. Hell you could see it on TV. Play aggressive, let the good D. backs you have man up. Scheme your blitizies like Van Gorder did. In other words “defense, make me know it”!

Mark Richt should have never hired a friend, Willie Martineze, that he can’t man up and fire. Lets face it, we are stuck with W. M. for as long as Richt has a job because Coach Willie ain’t never going to leave until he takes Richt down with him. Sad but true.

If Munson hadn’t retired, he would say “Watch this one”. So, I will say it for him. Unbelievable as it is, this is a huge trap game for UGA. If they don’t start better in this game then they have in the others, watch it. Despite their record, TN has the athletes to play with anyone, and they match up well with the Dawgs, think a mini Alabama. The TN/FL game would have been much closer if TN hadn’t turned the ball over twice inside the FL 5. Watch this one!!!!

If the players’ brains work anything like mine, they won’t be fooled or surprised or anything by Tennessee. You have last year’s assault and battery coupled with Alabama’s 31-point “who’s your daddy?” from a couple of weeks ago. I really don’t think there will be a problem with focus this weekend.
However, I must say the best thing Vol fans can hope for is Georgia looking ahead to Vanderbilt.

I’m a UT homer and would love to see a Vol uprising. But it ain’t gonna happen. UT’s defense is overrated - we haven’t played a really good offense. Our secondary is stout but they are forced to play on an island because we get no push up front and haven’t since Big John Henderson and Albert Haynseworth left. This doesn’t bode well against Georgia. UF took it easy on us after they got up early and have been inconsistent at best. You’ve seen our offense, and CPF hasn’t paid attention to special teams since he took over. UGA plays inspired football and UT can’t slow them down. Look for a replay of your game with Bama with my Big Orange on the wrong end of it. UGA 41-14.

Its sad that some are still dwelling on the Ala. game from 2 weeks ago. If we all continue to look in our rear view mirror, we will run off into a ditch against Tenn. From my observations of reading some of the comments from these so called Bama fans, they haven’t had much to talk about in well over a decade. They want to think they are now with the big boys ( UGA, LSU, etc. Lets give them what they want. UGA fans need to focus on Tenn, not keep looking back 2 weeks ago. Remeber, win one game at a time. Let us all move forward and help OUR team. Focus on whats at hand/

Well I say fire MARTINEZ!! Then turn to BOBO and say your are next! The Dawgs have to pass but not every pass should be for forty yards. Run the ball with Mareno, King, and Samuels. Pass for short yardage like 3-6 yards passes and go for yards after catch. This should keep 3rd downs to 1 or 2 yards. Go deep but do it sparingly. Do not play soft defense like the id#ot Martinez does. Stop any running game! That may include more than four defensive lineman going after the QB! But I am just a fan. I do not get paid millions to fail.

Guys, there is no one outside of Gainesville that I’d rather beat than Georgia. Maybe even more so this year since the Dawgs received a lofty ranking to start the year. I believe as a man trying to be objective that UGA has two more SEC losses ahead of them. However, tomorrow against my beloved Orange crush will NOT be one of them. Nick Stephens hasn’t started an SEC road game. Our secondary is forced to play soft because our D line isn’t able to get penetration. Arian Foster is depressed. Monterio Hardesty (our best back in my opinion)is not getting the carries and neither is Lennon Creer for that matter. The only thing that may improve is the punt game. Colquit might be able to bury the dawgs deep. Now, all that being said, we DO have a solid if not damn good defense. We have Mr. Eric Berry who is our best player and probably the best in the SEC at his position (watch the pick six here). We have some playmakers at receiver ie..Taylor, Jones, and Warren. Since The GREAT BIG GREASY PIG has his bacon….er…uh…back against the wall, he may let Hardesty and company take over. We DO for some reason play great against UGA. Much like us against the Gators, The Dawgs tend to let UT get into their heads. What do i conclude after all this?? UGA will win, but I think Tenn will cover. So, UGA minions, your dream is still alive……for now. Vandy is very opportunistic and they rank in the triple figures nationally in total D and O. Don’t worry about the Dores. Its the Bayou Bengals, Gators, and War Eagles looming that you should be chewin on your meaty bones over. Good luck. and as always……GO BIG WHITE!!!!!

As long as UGA has a good dance routine for the sidelines they should be fine. If they had started dancing in the first half against Alabama they could have pulled it out. You can bet they had something ready. If the dancing don’t work, there has got to be another motivational penalty they can employ to get things back on track.

BREAKING NEWS…
AP-Tuscaloosa: Authorities arrested Alabama head coach Nick Saban Wednesday at his home in Tuscaloosa. Saban, 56, was charged with 85 counts of animal cruelty in an alleged attack which occurred Saturday night in Athens, Georgia. Police said that as many as 92,138 witnesses saw Saban and a large group of violent young men under his control hit, kick, crush and destroy a large pack of mostly-docile bulldogs.
One officer was quoted as saying, “I haven’t seen dogs treated this badly since the Michael Vick case.”

UT may be having a bad year, but they still have a good program. UGA fans always think their team is going to be awesome, and they’re usually not. UGA periodically has good seasons, but it’s still not one of the most respected programs. Indoor practice facility, anyone?
UGA better watch out. The players are fiercely loyal to Fulmer for some reason. Listen to the way Peyton Manning talks about him! The Vols will be playing tough on Sat. It will most definitely be a close game, and I think it’s possible that UT will pull it out. With the spread, my money is definitely on UT.

What a stupid article. Of course the Dawgs will win. We had a little set back last week - we had some key injuries and the poll voters will remember that. My prediction is for a big rocky top bashing as the Dawgs get back to form to win the SEC and our 6th National Championship. GO DAWGS

Georgia was a contender but then they put on the pads and took each other out. Injury bug has bit the Bulldogs hard this year. When you lose your best O-lineman an All-American at that your best D-lineman and in a position not that deep DL been missing best DE and back-up safety. Thought the depth was better tho. Very hard to explain. It is hard for any team to recover when it suffers losses like these.

The Dawgs got their revenge against the Gators last year. I look for them to do the same against the Vols tomorrow. Watch out for the Yellow Jackets.
GO DAWGS!

Mark, You shouldn’t knock Northern IL. I live in IL, and they are a tough out.

No only did Majors make the comment about Chavis saving Fulmers job he is now saying hiring Fulmer was his biggest mistake. Ck out govols.com for the article. It was a statement Majors made on Finebaums radio show.

It truly is funny reading a bunch of Dawg fans in denial. “Bama doesn’t want to play us again”, or ” Look at all the Bammers coming out of the woodwork now that they’ve won.” LOL UGA got taken to the woodshed 2 weeks ago and will again if the two teams meet again. Your program has only been good for 8 years and yet you act like you have the most storied Football past, when Bama actually does. I am so glad we beat the tar out of a team that has hacks for fans. I hope your misery continues. ROLL TIDE!!!

UGA! Tennessee is a second tier team, come on. Any real coaching talent will cream UGA.
But it’s fun at midseason to enjoy this illusion of UGA victory.
It’s coaching, right? You all know that, right? It’s not talent, because the talent is always evenly spread.
It’s coaching. Right?
morons.
