This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Waddell fills Thrashers’ biggest hole
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Some people won’t want to hear this. Some people don’t want to give Don Waddell — the Teflon Don, they call him, referring to his uncanny ability to remain general manager — credit for anything. So here’s a warning: Those folks should stop reading right now.
For the rest of you, here goes:
The Teflon Don has had a pretty fair offseason.
These Thrashers may or may not make the playoffs, but this will be the best-defending team in franchise history. For nearly a decade the Thrashers sought to win games 5-4; this team should be able to win a game 4-3 or even 3-2. That might not sound like an improvement — fans, as we know, tend to like offense — but in the grand scheme it should be.
“A huge upgrade,” said Waddell, speaking Wednesday of Blueland’s blue line. “We’ve got four legitimate top four [defensemen]. And that’s not counting Garnet Exelby, who’s been a good soldier for us, and Zach Bogosian, our No. 1 draft pick.”
Last season’s Thrashers tied for last in the NHL in goals yielded and were dead last in shots allowed. Even if the rest of the team had been really good, being slack at the back would have doomed those Thrashers to mediocrity. And if you’re starting over — which, in the post-Hartley, post-Hossa world, this franchise is — the way to do it is get sound first and leave the sizzle for another day.
By signing Ron Hainsey as a free agent; by extending Tobias Enstrom’s contract for four years, and by importing Mathieu Schneider from the Ducks at the steep salary of $5.7 million, Waddell has made a statement. At a time when the Thrashers are perilously close to becoming an Atlanta afterthought, he has added players in the place where his team has been lacking and, even more significantly, he has spent enough money to give temporary lie to the notion that the Atlanta Spirit doesn’t care about hockey.
“Our ownership has sent a strong message,” Waddell said. “When I went to them with the Schneider deal, there was great support for it.”
The belief among NHL watchers is that the Thrashers have nobody to score beyond Ilya Kovalchuk, and that’s why a Hockey News columnist lists them as 15th-best in the 15-team Eastern Conference and why SI.com ranks them 26th-best in a 30-team league. Waddell, not surprisingly, sees it differently. He sees offense coming from his ramped-up defense.
“We were 29th in points from our defensemen last year,” he said. “If you just add what Hainsey and Schneider did last year to that, we go from 29th to 14th. And I’d much rather make sure we take care of our own zone first.”
Should that happen, perhaps Kari Lehtonen, the gifted goaltender, might finally play to his potential. Should that happen, the fairly faceless John Anderson might look like a shrewd hire as head coach. Said Waddell: “John loves defensemen to jump in the play and join the rush. Our guys are saying, ‘This system is different than what we’ve been playing, but we like it.’ “
His many critics will insist this is just another round of spin control from the Teflon Don, who could, as the saying goes, sell ice cubes in the Arctic Circle. But if you think dispassionately, there’s logic here: A Southern team coming off a dud season isn’t apt to attract goal-scoring free agents, and being solid defensively hasn’t yet proved a detriment in any sport at any level.
“We’re a much better hockey team,” Waddell said. “No doubt.”
The Teflon Don has issued a proclamation. Feel free to hold him to it.

Another attempt to keep the 30 silver coins that Bradley has sold-out for…What has our bumbling Donny done for you, Mark? Is it similar to what that equally buffoonish Pete Babcock paid you to protect him?
What’s this, even more bluster from Donny? I’ll remember this—just like the countless others…”Five-Year Plan”; playoff “guarantees”; This team is “better” than last year’s team; etc. ad nauseam from our hapless joke of a GM.
I hope and pray that most folks will stop subsidizing the utter incompetence which is going on in that figurative joke otherwise known as “Blueland”.
I also wish that we could find out what Bradley sold out for…

Oh, and Mark, if we re-signed Uwe Krupp, would you bluster like Donny over the genius of this move?
One good joke in “Bwuewand” deserves another…I also hope you have the courage to write about Donny come mid-season, when we’re in the tank yet again.
We’ll see…but that 30 coins pays for much, doesn’t it?

Nice article Mark. I’m excited for the new season. Some might not be optimistic about our offense, but rest assured, our defense should give any other teams a run for their money here in the SE. The performance of our defense, coupled with solid outings from our young guys (Little, Christensen, Armstrong), a rebound year from Kozzy, a nice showing from both Williams and Reasoner, and of course another brilliant year from Kovy, make for an exciting season.
Let’s give credit where it’s due. Nice job Don.

Mark, I’m extremely hesitant to give any credit to Donny after the pathetic job he has done w/ this franchise in his 9 years here. He certainly has not earned the benefit of the doubt. But having said that, it DOES look like the defense should be drastically improved. (Of course, it couldn’t have gotten much worse!) I know we overpaid for Hainsey, because where we are right now, we have to overpay for any fairly big name to come here! But hopefully his addition, along with the no-brainer acquisition of Schneider, will bring much greater stability to the blue line. In those two, Enstrom, & Havelid, we have the best Top 4 defensemen we’ve ever had.
I think we’re gonna struggle offensively, but I’d rather see us win a few more 3-2 games than losing all those 6-4 games from the past. And if Kozlov returns to close to his ‘06-‘07 form, we may not be all that bad on the offense. Here’s hoping these guys actually give us some reasons to give some credit to DW, for a change!

I’m not going to argue that Waddell has been the greatest GM over the fullness of time, but the larger point is — or, at least to me, should be — what’s he doing now? And I thought the Schneider trade was a major upgrade.

Sage is pathetic…picking on a sports team that actually improved this summer like he’s some kind of a bully. Like he gets off on it…
It’s a team Sage, not a little kid, but you treat the team like some kid you couldn’t beat up at school…nobody cares about how mean you can be. It doesn’t make you big or clever, and it’s a very tired routine from you.
How about you go bowling with Jeff Schultz, that’s about your speed.

Waddell is called the “Teflon Don” because nothing ever sticks to him. Things like, giving up more goals than any other team over the past decade, seven seasons out of eight in the bottom third of the Conference, seven draft picks in the Top 10 overall to build the franchise, and heading the June 2008 Draft, 27 defensemen selected, but only (2) to ever crack the starting lineup, three (3) head coaches hired, no scouts fired, and never making the second round of the playoffs, or even earning a solitary playoff win, are often overlooked. Some posters have opined that our defensive system of the past is tantamount to “whack-a-mole.” Other posters have asked, “What is Thrashers hockey?” Followed by, “Can anyone really ‘define’ it?” AJC writer Jeff Schultz has insisted, “This team still doesn’t have an identity. Nor has this GM particularly grown the sport in the region.” Fair enough. Such ends the usual litanies.
But guess what? Mark Bradley is right that Waddell didn’t do anything disastrous, at least NOT YET, during this offseason. Give him some credit. Waddell is hardly in some power position to go fix what broke. With lackluster ownership, (who still hasn’t bought out Belkin in over 3 years,) and operating in a non-traditional hockey market, more known for failure at this point than success, plucking Tier I free agents is easier said than done. But it’s nice to see some positive press about what has transpired this offseason. At least at the beginning of the year, I should hope that there might be some optimism about this club. There ARE reasons to be hopeful.
Let’s be clear, here, though. There is a reason why the major hockey websites and publications have ranked Atlanta where they have. It’s not a baseless projection that Atlanta might wind up 13th or lower in the Conference.
But John Anderson and his players should IGNORE it. Anderson is a good coach. And he has an excellent rapport with many of the Thrashers players, as he has coached several of them to Championships at the AHL level. I’m looking forward to seeing Anderson’s system, and special teams strategies. I think our new Head Coach will find a goaltender rotation policy that works for Kari Lehtonen. Ondrej Pavelec is competing with Kari for the #1 position. Waddell inked Moose to a 2-year extension, as insurance in net.
The Thrashers may have lost the bidding war for Brian Campbell, but they did pick up a potential Tier I defensemen for the future at the draft, in Zach Bogosian, selected 3rd overall. Waddell reached a new plateau, in his evolution as an NHL GM, by locking up Enstrom with a PROACTIVE contract. It gives me some hope for the future. Hopefully, he’ll do the same with Little, Pavelec, Bogosian, Valabik, and Lehtonen, when the opportunity next presents itself. Kovalchuk is a whole other matter, and is better addressed at a future point.
I’m not sure that we absolutely needed to have Ron Hainsey on a 5-year deal, at $4.5 million cap hit, but that could be a bargain, down the road, if Hainsey turns into a fixture on the top pairing. I suspect he’ll begin his tenure with the Thrashers in the middle pairing.
Marty Reasoner’s acquisition didn’t fill a vacancy, but he’s not some horrible player. And he’s only on a 1-year deal, so he can be moved at the trade deadline, or not renewed, if he lays an egg. Williams is, likewise, on a 1-year deal, and should be plenty motivated to have a “contract year” like performance, to earn his next paycheck. If he doesn’t, we don’t have to re-sign him.
Waddell didn’t attempt to bring back Bobby Holik. And I wholeheartedly applaud that decision. Brad Larsen and Ken Klee, also “seasoned” players in this league, were jettisoned for the mentoring skills of Matthieu Schneider. Schneider is in his “contract year,” and may fetch a nice prize, come the trade deadline. Another potential trade deadline casualty is blueliner Nic Havelid, who is a pending UFA at the end of the year. Waddell could land something “decent” for him.
Mark, I think this season represents a tremendous opportunity to finally develop some of the Thrashers draft picks, who have been lingering in the system, blocked by aging, free agent signings of the past. They know John Anderson’s system. I’m not going to stress over wins and losses in a “build” year.
Rest assured, if the team tanks, there’ll be the usual calls for Don’s head on a platter. If the goal this season is to spend as close to the floor as possible, while developing the talent, and finishing somewhere in the lottery draft, Waddell has a long and storied history of doing just that. And that’s why he’s been retained, in my opinion. Waddell will stick to that budget, keep the team solvent, and look for waiver claim players throughout the season to bolster the club as much as he can.
To have any results, we have to play some games first. Let’s see how we do. And the point of preseason is to evaluate talent, not to win. As long as the right roster decisions are being made, that’s what counts the most.

If the team tanks he’s got to go.
By tanks, I mean that we see a lot of quit in them boys as the phrase goes.
I don’t think we’re going to make the playoffs, I’d think that a .500 season is a realistic result. That being said, I want to see the team in the hunt, playing “meaningful games in the spring”.
And I don’t think that it’s out of the realm of possibility!
Mark, nice work on the article, I agree; this offseason DW acted like he had something that resembles a plan for success.
Will it work? Who knows. But this is the best I’ve seen from DW since the lockout.

The Thrashers are going to be rebuilding forever. I thought that in 2007 when they won the division, this is it! We are going to go on a run! And then they immediately get swept by the Rangers, fire their coach, trade their best over all player, and finish towards the bottom of the standings. At least we finally got a stud defenseman prospect in the draft.

Mark, that Schneider trade was no masterminded move! No other team wanted the old defensemen, that’s why he cleared waivers!
A guy clears waivers for two reasons. Either he is washed up and old or his contract is ridiculous high (possibly could be both with Schneider)
I saw Schneider coming to the Thrashers the day the Ducks were rumored to be shopping him. I knew no other team would pick him up and the Thrashers are desperate to still try to make up for not landing Brian Campbell. Bad article!
Waddell had a below average off season BUT he did have an above average effort, just couldn’t get the players here—so who’s fault is that that players do not want to come here?

Very poor arguement Broker. Lots of teams wanted Schneider but most were already over the cap limit and couldn’t squeeze him in. By waiting until Schneider cleared waivers DW was able to bring in one of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL for a net salary of about $3 million. That is an absolute steal for a player who Rock Bonanno of NHL.com calls “one of the League’s most accomplished power-play forces from the blue line.”
Losing out on the Campbell sweepstakes looks brilliant now considering his $7 million salary. If our guys do stumble a bit this year we’ve got a very valuable player in Schneider come the trade deadline. We could ship him off to a contender for about $1 million in salary and receive a very talented player in return. (Coburn anybody?) Either way, if we win now, or trade up to win later it looks like a win/win for the Thrashers.

Damn Bradley, you got me all excited with that headline, I was fixin to read that Waddell got us a top line center.
The Schneider trade was a good one, we gave up Klee and Larsen, both over the hill nobodies for one year of service from Schneider. It’s a good deal by Don, but the real reason this deal was done was to bring in a mentor for Bogosian. That’s the long term effect this will have on this club, helping speed Bogosian’s learning curve.
This is a build year, and yes the Thrashers will struggle and lose a lot of games, but the key to this year is to see if Bogosian can learn, to see if Little can turn into an NHLer, to see if Coach will work out here, and to see if Ilya buys into it all and will sign an extension with us next summer.

You do realize that Campbell is about 10 years younger (more?) than Schneider and Campbell is signed for what, 7 years? And we’ll have Schneider for one year at most, and as you point out, probably just to the deadline.
How is that briliant?

No other team wanted the old defensemen, that’s why he cleared waivers!
The Thrashers got Schneider because the other seven or eight teams who were vying for him also wanted Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan in the deal, and that’s not something Burke was willing to do to shed salary. Atlanta got Schneider because Atlanta wasn’t asking for any other Anaheim players, but because Atlanta wanted to dump their garbage, so to speak.
And you know something? Schneider seems happy about being here.

Bob, I have to disagree. It’s brilliant for the simple fact that it’s a one year deal with Schneids. He will mentor Bogo, which is priceless. Not just with hockey but how to be a pro on and off the ice (sounds like a cliche, I know but it’s true). And as Alan points out Schneids seems happy to be here, which to be honest not a lot of players are willing to come here right now and like it. If this works well, we might, hopefully (also depending on his play) be able to sign Schneids next year for a lot more reasonable price for a year. Giving up Klee and Larson didn’t hurt anything, all of this of course is just my opinion.

In all fairness, Schneider’s acquisition could’ve been made regardless if Campbell was signed or not.
If Campbell was signed that means Hainsey’s roster spot would’ve been taken. Schneider still would’ve been on a team looking to shed salary, and Klee and Larsen still would’ve been on a team with two offensive defenseman, and no solid mentor for the future of this franchise’s blueline.
Campbell and Schneider would’ve been excellent for this franchise (I doubt ownership would’ve swallowed that much in terms of salary), but Hainsey and Schneider are a fine consolation prize.
The fact Schneider is only on a one-year contract allows for flexibility this year and next. He can be shipped off if the team is out of the hunt, or he can be re-signed if he and the team want to continue utilizing his services. Better yet, he can mentor Bogosian and Enstrom (there’s no way he can’t help Enstrom’s game too) for this season, then walk away freeing up $5M+ in cap space in the process (ownership loves hearing about money they don’t have to spend).
Sage — Re-read the first paragraph of the article. Next time you should simply take Bradley’s advice and click on another website.

“Losing out” on Campbell and signing Hainsey for less allowed DW, along w/ trading Klee and Larsen, to go to the Spirit Group with the deal to acquire Schneider and his almost $6M salary.
As it stands now, I prefer Schneider playing and teaching Bogo and out other young d-men for a year (perhaps more?) and Hainsey for 5 years over Campbell for 7 years.

Where was the OFFENSE???
WHY did JIMMY “CAN’T FINISH” SLATER get 2nd star??? Absolutely ridiculous…
KOVY-LITTLE-WILLIAMS
KOZLOV-CHRISTENSEN-ARMSTRONG
LAVALLEE-REASONER-THORBURN
BOULTON-PERRIN-WHITE
I keep STERLING in the Pressbox for now… But he NEEDS to step it up if he’s gonna stay here.

Slater got the second star (according to Kamal) because he played a solid game, and created the play that lead to Christensen’s goal (loose stick knocked the puck from B. Stuart, which Christensen took in on the breakaway).
Remember, the media are the people who assign the stars, so they see things differently than you might.

Yes, it was 4-1. One Red Wing goal was an empty-netter. Another was a Lehtonen gift. (He passed the puck in front of the net to Zetterberg, who plays for Detroit.) The other two were power-play goals.
On the other hand, the only Thashers goal was a Detroit giveaway.

Yeah, Mark—this team is built (again) for real greatness!
What has our bumbling Donny paid you off with? You continue to defend the indefensible. It’s so obvious it’s not even funny. Mark Bradley has been paid off.
Where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire…and when our buffoon of a GM opens his mouth, memorable bluster usually issues forth…Yet there is absolutely no accountability in “Bwuewand” (well, except from Jeff Schultz, who Waddell couldn’t get to and now refuses to speak to)
(and what’s even more humorous is to watch the pitiful little sheep lap it up!)
Bradley’s disservice is as egregious as his ‘support’ of the equally buffoonish Pete Babcock…

I can’t say that I always agree with Mark Bradley, but I will have to agree that you have to look at the off season as a positive one.
Klee is gone, Zhitnik is gone. Replaced with Hainsey and Schneider. It would be simple addition by subtraction with just the first two gone, but to be able to bring in the others in their place…
Not only that, but now you get to move Exelby down in the D Men rotation where he can be limited to 10-12 minutes of skating himself out of plays trying to check anything with skates.

Right Yet Again Sage Brother !
You, Nasardave & Bob tell it like it IS not like some makebelieve world like a lot of others do… Facts are Facts !
We have NO scoring period except one guy, simple, shut #17 down, you shut Atlanta down.
Sure defense is a bit better, but we were getting 10-15 shots a game with Hossa here so there will be no improvement, look at the record so far this preseason…
Remember the LIES spuded forth by asg last spring… Top Line Center for #17… NOT, New VP to oversee operations… NOT and on and on and on…
I look forward to losing a lot of close 2-1 3-2 games this season, ones we could win if we had some scoring, but The Master of Disaster waddell, provides nothing, but lets our top players go…
Just more of what we are used to here and this is what makes us the laughing stock of the NHL !

All well and good, but you could easily argue that all of the Thrashers top four defensemen are top four because of their offensive ability, not because of their defense. Therefore it is by no means guaranteed that the actual defense will improve. Hainsey and Schneider are not solid defensemen you sign when the priority is to shore up the defense.

Greetings everyone. First, so there are no misunderstandings, I love the Thrashers. Want them ro succeed! That said. I have serious issues with untalented losers wearing Thrasher uniforms. I forgive Maryann Hossa for bolting to a winner. What I cannot forgive is his dogging it during twilight days as Thrasher. Such behavior intolerable for paid professional athlete (unless you are a Falcon). I like Ilya Kovalchuk. Kid has abundant talent. Unfortunately, he does not wish to continue to waste that talent as Thrasher. Wants to compete for winner. Do not blame him. Kovy is a superstar that other teams will continue to negate game in and game out. Frustration he displayed last season will only worsen. Absolutely NO supporting cast! Team does not need one superstar but two or three stars. If Kovy is honest he will let fans know his true intentions. If not, he can pull a Maryann. Either way, he is on lookout for whiter ice elsewhere. Cannot blame him. In fact, if he is honest with fans, I wish him all the best. The only thing I ask is that when he departs he take Kari “Sori Letemin” Lehtonen with him! Enjoy the day.

He was expected to play with Milan Lucic and Michael Ryder on the 1rst line this year.
