This blog has moved! Yes, already!

As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.

New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Georgia the best of SEC title contenders

Mark Richt said last week there “are probably at least six legitimate contenders for [the SEC title], and any one of those six could be considered the best team in the country at the end.” We can eliminate Tennessee from that mix now, and even though Vanderbilt is undefeated and stands 21st in the Associated Press poll, it’s hard to imagine the Commodores climbing much higher.

So that leaves five teams, four of which are ranked among the nation’s top eight, two of which will collide Saturday night in Athens. And here, in ascending order, is a rating of those five:

5. Auburn: The temptation is to dismiss the Tigers after losing at home to LSU. Look closer and you’ll note that Auburn probably shouldn’t lose another SEC game until November, if then. The muddled offense that mustered three points against Mississippi State managed two touchdown drives and 320 yards against LSU, and the unit can only improve with time. (Brad Lester, the tailback from Parkview who was injured in Starkville, has been cleared to play against Tennessee on Saturday.) It’s an uphill slog, but this team might still win the West.

4. Alabama: The Tide can run the ball and play defense and has a senior quarterback in John Parker Wilson and a breakout freshman in receiver Julio Jones. Can those conspicuous assets deliver a conference title? Not just yet. It’s one thing to beat Clemson in the Georgia Dome, quite another to win at Sanford Stadium and in Baton Rouge. The suspicion is that Bama, which starts only six seniors, is still a year away from full-blown arrival. It probably will have to satisfy itself with beating Auburn for the first time since 2001 and making Tommy Tuberville stick his hands in his pockets.

3. Florida: Assuming they beat LSU in the Swamp, the Gators figure to be undefeated when they arrive in Jacksonville for The World’s Largest Outdoor Celebration Penalty Grudge Match. The young Florida defense has made clear upgrades over last season. But this is still Tim Tebow’s team, and Tebow, for whatever reason, hasn’t been as effective. (He ranks sixth in the conference in total offense, behind legends like Casey Dick and Chris Smelley.) And it isn’t as if Urban Meyer is resting his quarterback: Tebow was still playing inside the final three minutes with a 24-point lead in Knoxville.

2. LSU: The winner of the LSU-Auburn game usually wins the West, but the Bayou Tigers aren’t safe just yet. They still have to go to Gainesville and must play Georgia and Alabama. This remains a tremendous defensive team, and quarterback Jarrett Lee seemed to find himself in the second half at Jordan-Hare Stadium, but the feeling persists that LSU simply lost too many players from its BCS title-winning team to rule the nation’s toughest conference again. It could and probably should win the West, but not the league.

1. Georgia: The Bulldogs are the best fusion of running and passing, of offense and defense, in the SEC and maybe the land. They have more ways to win than any other conference team, and they’re finding new ones as they go. (Say hello to A.J. Green.) They still have a wicked schedule, but they can lose once — so long as it’s not in Jacksonville — and reach the Dome on Dec. 6. At issue for Georgia: Opponents have managed 69 first downs, and 13 of those have come via penalty. That aside, the season’s first four weeks have done nothing to lessen the notion that took root months ago: That 2008 will be a Dog year.

i dont’ see auburn contending. that offense is brutal. they’ll lose at least two more games.

lsu has qb issues. lee played well on sat night but i still don’t think he can be trusted down the road. they lose to fla and ga.

bama loses to lsu and georgia.

florida loses to georgia.

georgia might fall asleep for that tenn game but they’ll win the east and then the championship and then play the real usc for all the marbles.

HAVING SO MUCH BALANCE IS THE KEY. I love the good cop, bad cop routine of Bradley and Moore. Definately entertaining. I just wish T. Moore wouldn’t get some of y’all so riled up. He’s an average writer that has found his angle. It works to sell ads and papers I guess, but just recognize it for what it is. The DAWGS should win this game by at least two touchdowns because as M. Bradley pointed out, Bama is still a year or so away. The DAWGS are there now and at home. Let’s push blackout record to 3-0. GO YOU HAIRY DAWGS!

I love my Dawgs but I just don’t see how we can navigate this schedule. Alabama wants revenge from last year; Flordia wants revenge from last year; Auburn wants revenge from last year, etc….They are all quality teams and who the hell wants to go play LSU in Baton Rouge in what will probably be a night game, ugh! Our offensive line worries me as we get into the toughest Defenses in the Country (Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Florida). Lets face it, IF our O-LINE can protect AND IF our D-LINE can get pressure then we have a better than average chance of winning every one of these games. It will all depend on the trenches in EVERY ONE OF OUR BIG GAMES from here on out. GO DAWGS

If you listen to ESPN, UGA ought to give up football. They don’t think we can beat anybody we play. Bama needs to be worried about us this weekend.

Come on Mark — you know you were tempted to go ahead and list SIX possible contenders. (For maybe 0.039 seconds).

Go ahead and say it. Vandy. Vanderbilt. The Dores. It just feels right to have them as #6 on the list doesn’t it?

Actually it feels a little like copping to preferring women’s gymnastics to the CBS SEC game of the week — on the other hand, it’s pleasurable to say they’ll do better than SOS’s team.

In truth, I don’t see any more than 5 SEC teams that could do it this year either. But hey, we’re just getting started.

By birddawg

I agree with MB’s column. The Dawgs have to eliminate the penalties. Bama will come out and try to be physical. UGA has too many weapons on offense to stop them. It will be close for 3 quarters and Dawgs pull away in the 4th by 13 to 17 points.

By Fake Tickets!

September 24, 2008 4:49 PM | Link to this

Everybody be careful about the fake tickets this weekend! Remember, if it is a little piece of red cardboard, and it says Jawja vs Bama on it, then it is probably counterfeit (that means fake, which means that it is not real). I think these cardboard tickets are the ones that confused all of the LSU fans as well.

UGA will not win against BAMA, LSU, UF, and Auburn there will be a let down sometime. Not picking on the DAWGS but this is a tuff road. I don’t think Knoshun will last (health wise) through the tuff season. If the O-line can over come the injuries and shifting then the Dawgs have a chance to go 11-2 if they make the SEC ship or 10-2 and second in the SEC EAST. I think you should have waited for the “blackout” and see what LSU wanted to wear first. THE VOODOO they DO SO WELL is when you need that extra pump. LSU @ what I am sure will be at night game will be TUFF. Swap it up an go with Black BRITCHES, Black Helmets, and WHITE Jerseys. You can be the next 22 TOP MODLES You fashion HOEs. Make sure the DAWG (I would ALUM but we know that is a JOKE) FANS buy CMR some hair plugs. He looks like a COMB-OVER WANNA BE.

Mark,

I think your top 3 are the 3 who have the best chance and really each have as much of a chance as the other.

However if you are going to harp on Tebow and stats as one reason for UF not being better than the other 2 and then try and say UGA has best fusion of offense and defense then you shouldn’t ignore this…

Florida is leading the SEC in scoring offense (37.3 points per game), scoring defense (6.3 points per game), total defense (213 yards per game), kickoff returns (27.6 yards per game), punt return average (24.6 yards per game), third-down conversions (53.8 percent) and Florida is tied for first with Vanderbilt in field goal accuracy (4-of-4).

Hey, don’t count the Vols out until after this weekend. If they “screw the pooch” like last week THEN count them out. A brief history lesson, after getting trounced by Florida even worse last year, they kicked GA’s mangy butt all over the field and went on to somehow clinch the East.

The sad aspect of UGA football is, after the Dogs get whipped by Alabama, Florida, LSU, and possibly Auburn, these delusional pups will still insist that they are the real national champions, just like they did last year. They don’t realize that there is a connection with red neck whining and unfovorable ratings in the polls.

One thing that UGA’s tough schedule has that works in Georgia’s favor is that because its soooo tough we simply cant look ahead to ANYONE now..therefore COMPLETE focus on the current opponent.. unlike say florida who can talk of nothing and no one else but Georgia.. so now..in some way..our schedule actually HELPS us to go ONE AT A TIME!

Is there really nothing else thats going on in the places where you live that you have to spend your time and negative energy here?! And to the ones that live here in our great state of Georgia and great city of Atlanta who are such loyal and devoted fans of colleges in those other states..and if Bama,Auburn,Florida,Tennessee,LSU is soooo much better than UGA..why not go back to those states/schools if they are sooo much better?!! Could it be that you guys are ABC’s (Alumnus By Choice) who never even stepped foot in a college classroom? I’d feel a lot better if the Gators had not dominated the Dawgs in recent years. That bye week that they normally have before playig us helps a lot.

It’s a tough conference, and Vandy is bugging the H out of us these last few years. While UGA may have the best team, the schedule just seems impossible. If the O line can be solidified they might just surprise us. I have to put it that way because even though I’m not superstitious I don’t want to jinx them.

I guess, they win the national championship on paper. Does anyone think Tech, Vandy, and Kentucky can play a little bit. It’s a new day at Tech with Coach Johnson. I agree with the dud, who said, they need to play one at a time. Jackets win in a barn burner, but ain’t college football, the real game! It don’t get better than that.

By To the Tebow haters

September 24, 2008 6:32 PM | Link to this

For those who to point to UF’s losses in 07 and try and degrade Tebow…The reason Tebow still won the Heisman with 3 regular season losses is because none were his fault. UF’s defense was terrible in 07 and if it weren’t for Tebow UF would have loss more than 4 games. UF’s defense is much better in 07 and additionaly UF’s schedule is much lighter.

UF lost 4 games in 07 by a combined 25 points UGA loss 2 games in 07 by a combined 25 points.

Everyone was screaming UF wouldn’t be anything in 2008 because their defense would be so bad. Now you all are grasping at straws to justify your hate of UF.

I think this Bama team will be one of the toughest this year for us. Larry is right, this game will be won in the trenches, and now is the time the Bulldawg faithful will get to see if those recruiting classes (and subsequent rankings) were worth a damn. I pray that Ben Jones only needs 1 quarter to fully mature into his position! I dont think that LSU or Auburn has what it takes (remember folks, its now a mental thing with Auburn players…) and we should coast in the East until Oct. 25th.

With that said, I think UGA will eek out a close victory this weekend, and leave Saban nation scrambling for excuses (yet again). Can’t wait, these are the games we all live for! Look for me on Saturday, I will be the one in BLACK!!!!

Georgia hasn’t played a decent team yet (check the power rankings). They are very talented, no doubt, but they haven’t been tested. They also are undisciplined and make too many mistakes on both sides of the ball, including stupid penalties. Interesting take on the SEC. Georgia is the real deal and I think they will handle Alabama by 14+. LSU is getting better QB play and should win the west, but the SEC championship will not be played in Atlanta, but will be settled in JACKSONVILLE. It will be a titanic clash, full of talent and emotion on both sides. Appropriate that it will be played in the unique half & half setting, that is the cocktail party. As good as the dawgs obviously are, I’ve never seen him pander like this. BTW, maybe the reason Tebow is in the game late at Tennessee is because he takes care of the ball better than anyone - 3 games and zero turnovers.

Well, ‘nuff said about the attributes of Georgia, Florida, Bama, and LSU. I think I can agree with most but the outlandish here.

But don’t sell LSU out because of their “Quarterback Issues”. All they managed to do agains Auburn (Who was a runaway pic it win the West) was to prove that with a competent quarterback, anything can happen.

Both of LSU’s National Championships were won with good quarterbacks who had leadership qualities. Neither (Matt Mauk and Matt Flynn) were “great”. Both of their quarterbacks today fit this description.

Even if the “General Lee” comeback was a fluke, or lucky - at least, LSU has plenty of talent who will win for the quarterback, as long as he plays intellegently and does not lose the game on his own. Both Jarred Lee and Andrew Hatch can do that.

GaGator - I disagree with you. I think Meyer left Tebow in the game because he can’t stand Philip Flubber too and wanted to embarass them at Home. Hell, who DOESN’T have Phil Fatarse? I personally loved seeing all of those sideline shots where he was doin’ the “Spurrier” with his hat.

All this talk about Bama losing to La Monroe last year and losing to Auburn 6 in a row. Did UGA not lose to Vandy like two years ago and almost lose to Kentucky that same year? I don’t remember UGA being on probation recently so how they could be that bad? Bama has been on probation twice in the past decade so at least Bama has an excuse. I remember that before Richt was hired at UGA they were a 7-5 team every year and always got beat by Florida. I hate to bring UGA’s past up but it seems Bama’s is getting brought up way too much on this board for me not to say something about UGA’s.

I don’t think there is one TRUE dominant SEC team this year. My Dawgs have speed especially on offense, but their young on both the o-line and d-line. They remind me a lot of that team in 2003 which had a young offensive line and David Greene got sacked like 40 times, but they ended up finishing 11-3. LSU has depth at their skill positions, but their defense is weak against the run, so I think they’re about a year away. Auburn is also weak against the run and they’re offense is hit or miss. Bama is big, physical and nasty. But they have yet to be tested in their secondary and I think they’ll be exposed a little bit against UGA IF the receivers will catch the ball. Florida looks solid this year and is better on defense, but if you have speed on defense, you can hold them to 14-20 points. Hell Miami and Tennessee held the Gators to 23 and 26 points defensively, and their defenses are nowhere near as good as UGA’s or LSU’s. The SEC is definately up for grabs this year. It will be a fun race.

I think its hilarious that bammer fans think they are “in UGA’s head.” Was Florida in UGA’s head when we ran out and celebrated? How did that work out for Florida? Was Auburn in UGA’s head the last time we blacked out Sanford? How did that work out for Auburn? Was Hawaii in UGA’s head when we blacked out the Sugar Bowl? Yeah, that DEFINITELY gave Hawaii a big edge in that game.

Give me a big fat freaking break. Bama is squarely on UGA’s mind but they are not “IN THEIR HEADS” in the slightest.

If you care, Richt told the seniors that they could choose what game to wear black. They chose Alabama. It’s obviously gonna be a home game so Bama is sort of the obvious choice. That means they respect Bama and they know its a big game. It also means the Dawgs are gonna bring their best shot.

I think the only thing that’s in anyone’s head is the Lower Alabama weed being inhaled down in the trailer park.

Actually Mike, I got my degree in a Georgia University (not UGA) as an out-of-state student and I also have 2 kids, now grown, born in Georgia. That said, I am from Baton Rouge and I bleed purple and gold. Several have voiced legitimate reasons the Dawgs might lose and you come back with insults. My 22 year old son is a Dawg fan but one of his best friends from high school is a starter for LSU right now and we don’t sit around and say get out of here and insult each other. You immaturity is showing. The truth is Georgia has an extremely tough road schedule and if you think people giving legitimate opinions on that is a problem, why don’t YOU go away? Do you tell the UGA fans that are honest enough to understand there’s a tough road ahead for the Dawgs to leave if they say it? LSU has already started their season much the same way as the year of Katrina and has to play a game on our off week. Lee looked good, Hatch will be back and we still are a loaded team. So attack anyone you wish but understand at LSU, while we are 100% fans, our team has already gone through something you’d never understand - 2 hurricanes that flooded or destroyed some of their homes or homes of family members and guess what media and world - there are still large parts of Baton Rouge without power after Gustav and those that live in the southwestern coastal area are in even worse shape after Ike pounded them so soon after Gustav. So either say something of substance that contributes to the conversation or are insults all you know how to give? I’m not quite sure why you think we have no right to comment here. I lived in Georgia long enough to consider it a 2nd home and still have many family members there and I’m glad none of them are as narrow minded as you appear to be. GEAUX LSU TIGERS!

John,

Actually, UGA was 7-5, etc. until Coach Donnan was hired. He bridged the gap between the 7-5 years under Ray Ray and the 10+ win years we have now….

As far as the game goes, I think it will be a nailbiter. BAMA’s monster DT will command a lot of attention. I say look for the DAWGS to run a lot of plays where Stafford gets rid of the ball quick to WR or screens, etc. to take the DT out of the picture. After we disrupt what Bama’s D wants to do with their traitional pass/run rush, then we mix it up with pass and run.

As far as our D vs. their O, I think Bama is (obviously) going to try and run the ball between the tackles. They can’t beat us outside. If we can stiffle their running attack, then lookout, it might be a blowout. Putting them in 2nd/3rd and long will give us the edge. We have got to control their running game, then we can do what we want with their O.

The whole game comes down to 2 things…..

1) Can we manage/control the huge DT for Bama 2) Can our front four on D hold up against the O-line in the run and pass to allow the other 7 to make plays.

We do those 2 things and we win 35-10… If we don’t it will go to the wire and anything could happen.

I agree with peirmontdawg: I’m not thinking about any other Teams right now. The SEC is the toughest conference in the NCAA right now.

With that being said, I have respect for ALL of the SEC teams. On any given Saturday, there is a possibility that a ranked SEC team could be beaten by a another SEC team. Like peirmontdawg said, “Lets take one game at a time”.

The Dawgs have been sensational since Coach Mark Richt took the reigns over a few years ago. With the SEC being such a Football Power House, wins against Florida, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama in the past gives Georgia some great credibility.

This will be a good game this coming weekend. I believe that the Dawgs will have a win against Bama this coming Saturday. GO DAWGS…..

D, Let me ask you this. If Georgia loses a game and winds up not playing for a National Championship but you win the SEC East and win the SEC Championship, are you happy with that? Given that Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, LSU (twice) have won a National Championship since Georgia has? Is winning the SEC good enough for you? Some people it may be, I understand consistency is great and I hope Bama can attain it again soon but we have won a title within the last 15 years, Georgia 1980.

Ah Come on Dawg Fud:

The USC Trojans seem to be a pretty good team right now. But how could we measure their strength? They are playing non contenders. Their undisputeable talent has left a couple of years ago for the NFL.

USC wins come from all Non Contenders. They should be undefeated. Their win against Ohio State Buckeyes, was against a team that was highly over rated.

They (USC) have been over rated for the past three years now. USC have not been tested and probably will not until they reach a Bowl Game.

Georgia is the REAL DEAL too. If you don’t remember, Georgia have beaten all of the Teams you have mentioned to include Georgia beating Florida last year, and Played in the Sugar Bowl, in which they demolished an Over rated Hawaii 41- 10.

The last time Georgia played LSU, we beat them in the regular season. So don’t talk so fast.

The Dawgs are a very good team. Not to forget that that Dawgs has the toughest schedule in the NCAA this year.

The PAC 10 Conference are weak along with the BIG 10. They are running up a lot of points against many teams that are not even in the top twenty - five.

The SEC Conference is the most toughest conference in the NCAA. At one time, there were Five SEC Teams in the top ten.

A DAWG Fan

you point out the obvious and i agree with you. i believe Georgia to be the real deal, too. no one is talking too fast, perhaps you should re-read my post.

all the points you made were about the past. i am talking about the present, 2008 season. let’s see how the Dawgs do against a legitimate offenseive line, defensive line and coaching staff this weekend and we will be able to better guage their ability. i am pulling hard for them!

as i mentioned earlier, i recognize USC’s schedule is weak…but i also recognize that their defense is fast, strong, athletic and versatile. as much as i hate to say it, they look legit through this point of the season.

By Junkyard Dawg '00

September 25, 2008 4:38 PM | Link to this

Dawg Fud,

No need to be overly concerned w/ USC in a title game.

You must take into account the difference in strength of schedule between USC and any SEC Team that they may face in a national title game. USC will be able to walk onto the field and win most all of their games in the weak PAC 10, whereas an SEC team will have been battle tested and possess a huge advantage of experience in big games. Also, USC doesn’t have to play a championship game so they will have another entire week off over any SEC team which lends itself to a possible ‘rust’ factor. This is theoretical I know, but after watching the MNC game the last two years, there may be something to it.

By Dawg Fud

September 25, 2008 4:46 PM | Link to this

I would not classify myself as being overly concerned but their road to the BCS is undoubtedly easier. I do not think the pollsters will penalize them because Ohio State is weak this year. I thinkt hey look at it as more “these guys had the guts to schedule this deal a few years ago and they won regardless of opponents’ perceived strength.”

nonetheless, i digress.

UGA, Florida, LSU and Bama look to have the best shot at winning the conference. I don’t think you could rank them 1-4. They probably should all be tied for 1st.

I understand UGA’s strength of schedule but you still have to win the games.

I don’t quite understand why Bradley and others on here feel they can evaluate Tebow as suddenly “ineffective.” If you were Tim Tebow’s coach, and you’d been winning like you have in the first three games of this year, and knew you had LSU and Georgia coming up, would you be using a lot of showcase plays right now? You might, if getting him the Heisman was your first priority. But, since Meyer and Tebow both want a championship this year, there’s been no reason to showcase Tim Tebow so far.

Tebow’s abilities haven’t changed since last year. Judge his “effectiveness” after he’s played some close games, not the laughers they’ve had so far.

You don’t struggled against a TERRIBLE South Carolina team without a few additional losses in the season. UGA is not on anyones list to get to the NC game anymore. Perhaps the only way UGA’s offense can get the ball is for UGA’s defense to let the Crimson Tide score. Yes, that’s it! That’s why it’s so easy for Bama to score on the Dawgs. This looks like a weekday scrimmage practice for the Tide. Let’s face it, Georgia is ….well, not a very good football team compared to Bama. As usual, Coach Saban has his team ready for a big game and, as usual Mark Richt doesn’t. It seems that Coach Richt will be calling Coach Saban, just as Tommy Bowden found it necessary to do. Georgia always chokes in big games. It was always the reason that the polls quickly dropped them from #1 and now everyone can easily see why. Georgia simply had not played any quality opponents……..and it shows. UGA possibly doesn’t belong in the top 25. They are OK, but nothing to waste one’s time watching. It has been rather obvious to nearly everyone outside the SEC that the SEC conference is over-rated. Even Alabama isn’t that good. Yes, they are soundly whipping a rather average football team (Georgia), but it is probable that they would not score on Oklahoma. Even the best team in the SEC, LSU, would get thrashed by the Sooners. The rest of the country just had to let you find out for yourselves. The mature fans just smiled as these SEC fans psychotically chant, “SEC,SEC, SEC!!!!”. We knew it wouldn’t last and we don’t really take a lot of delight with informing them of their sudden demise due to this conspicuous over-rating. Now all of you Dawg fans know why Lee Corso chose the Tide over the Dawgs. What can we say, but “We told you so!” Admittedly there were a very small few of Dawg Fans who were honest enough to admit that the Dawgs were a good team, but not great, not the best, and not really that good against a really good Alabama team. This is the most embarrassing dominance of a top 3 team since USC thrashed Oklahoma a few years back. UGA fans, when you return from your trip behind the woodshed tonight, I know it will be difficult, but try to pretend that you realize that you really are not that good. OK? If you do, you will have a much easier season. It’s already 31-0 and time to deliver the eulogy on your hopeless dreams. But don’t fret to much since you were actually wise enough to go ahead and dress in black. All you need are a face full of tears and a few humble words. Everyone in the nation will know how to spell the word, ‘CHOKE’ after this game! If you need a little sugar on your ‘humble pie’, borrow some from the Trojan fans; they, too, know how it feels to suddenly realize that they were over-rated. Now, if you eat enough humble pie and stop chanting “SEC,SEC,SEC!!!”, when you play GA TECH, we may let you score a couple of times provided we can get the officials to overlook all your not so helpful penalties that your coach always lets you commit. There is professional counseling for some of you Dawg fans who will still wish to cling to your psychotic notions that you still are no. 1. By this time next year, you will be all cured;…NOT!! The rest of the nation (reasonable fans) know that this is a most incurable sports malady! See you in Athens in November!!
