This blog has moved! Yes, already!
As of Thursday, Feb. 12, this little blog has relocated to a new home on AJC.com. It’s the same newspaper, the same Web site and the same writer (feel free to groan) — there’s just a new URL.
New features: Bigger type, more graphics, comments that load 10 times faster and a larger and more recent photo that makes me look pretty doggone old. I think you’ll like it (the blog, not the photo). But I am, as we know too well, often wrong.

Richt’s Bulldogs are at home on the road
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Mark Richt learned under Bobby Bowden, who carried the nickname, “King of the Road.” Since coming to Georgia, the apprentice has usurped the throne.
For all the gaudy numbers compiled by Richt’s teams — two SEC championships, three division titles, five Top 10 finishes — nothing trumps 26-4, which is his astonishing record on an opponent’s field.
Saturday night, Georgia will play Arizona State in Sun Devil Stadium, a place the Bulldogs have never visited. Richt being Richt, he has been there and won already. He was on the Florida State staff when the Seminoles drove 98 yards to beat Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 1988. He remembers the winning play: “Fourth-and-15, and we hit Ronald Lewis on a little square-in.”
He smiles. “That was a great trip. Katharyn and I were pretty much newlyweds.”
His second Tempe excursion fared less well. Tennessee beat Florida State for the 1998 BCS title. “Our boy [Chris] Weinke had gotten hurt, and we were going with Marcus Outzen [at quarterback] and we just didn’t have enough juice.”
As Georgia’s coach, Richt has lost just once — to LSU, the eventual BCS titlist, in 2003 — the first time he has taken his team to a hostile stadium. He won in Knoxville on David Greene’s pass to Verron Haynes. He won in Columbia on David Pollack’s sack-and-snatch. He won in Tuscaloosa on Billy Bennett’s field goal. He won at Auburn on Greene’s fourth-down cast to Michael Johnson. All those famous victories came in his first two seasons, setting a tone that resounds still.
“If you don’t believe you can do something, it’s hard to do it,” Richt says. “When you start truly believing you can win, sometimes it’s hard to lose. Go back to that David Greene Tennessee game. If we don’t win that one, who knows what the mentality of our program would be? Who knows if I’d even be sitting here? I’d say it’s pretty debatable.”
What’s beyond debate is that the Richt Road Method works. There was no great innovation to it, he admits — “I just did it the way we did at Florida State” — but he’s happy to highlight the components.
“The No. 1 thing you have to have is a quarterback who can handle it. Of all the people who have to deal with the crowd noise and the emotion, he’s the one who gets affected the most. He can’t hear very well; we can’t hear him very well. When he makes a mistake it’s just unbelievably loud and crazy. He’s just got to be poised.
“David Greene couldn’t have asked for a better start [the Tennessee game] — a defining moment for a redshirt freshman. And we had him for four years, and [D.J.] Shockley just carried on the tradition. And now we’ve got [Matthew] Stafford. We suffered when he was a true freshman, and that’s what happens to quarterbacks if they’re not mature enough to handle it.”
After the quarterback? “The No. 2 thing is that your staff doesn’t panic, doesn’t overreact, doesn’t get too far off the game plan. You can make changes too rapidly when something seems worse than it really is, and that’s what a hostile crowd can do — accentuate your negative.
“Something bad’s going to happen. It’s inevitable. Somebody’s going to fumble. Somebody’s going to throw a pick … Don’t be surprised. You’ve got to prepare your mind for when it does happen: How are you going to react to it? You’ve got to decide that before the game.”
The third leg of the Richt Method is to be systematic. Georgia doesn’t bother with a walk-through in the opponent’s stadium on Friday. “We just meet and rest and go.” And it hews to its clock, not the time zone’s.
The plan for Tempe was to keep all watches and reset all hotel clocks on Eastern Time. Richt’s rationale: “It’s hard for a kid to see it’s 9 o’clock where they are and think, ‘It’s time to go to bed.’ It’s midnight, son … The bottom line is: We’re playing an 8 o’clock game, and we’ll treat it like that.”
Call that a royal decree from the new King of the Road.

Awful lot of emphasis put on that Tennessee game. As a matter of fact it seems sort of like UGA always puts alot of emphasis on Tenn. Is it a measuring stick, (good or bad)? Just axting.

The significance was it was Richt’s first bigtime road win that set the program in the right direction. I think the rest speaks for itself.

Is it just me or have the vowels actually had a fair amount of success in the big bad SEC.You may have been pooping yellow when the vowels had a 9 game win streak on UGA, and you may remember more vivdly that the dogs won 3 or 4 in a row after that. But you may also recall that the vowels have won 3 of the last 4 vs. UGA.The vowels have not won an SEC title (overall since 1998) BUT, they have been in the title game (as eastern div. CHAMPS) 2-3 times since. So, fellas the vowels could be a decent barometer as to how well the dogs are doing and the direction of each program.Just my musings.

Touchy, touchy. Tennessee fans are so defensive. Nobody has dissed Tennessee hillbillies. Why so insecure? But if you must act like little children I will point out that Richt is 3-1 in your overrated stadium. A couple of more wins and he will own it free and clear. You guys might have to name a street after him.

Bradley’s right. The Hobnail Boot win propelled the Dawgs under CMR, breaking the UT home streak and should not be underestimated.
This season is all about the Dawgs’ road skills. If we can bring home the W’s, we will have a grand rematch with the SEC West in Hotlanta, a relatively home game we would deserve. If we win that with even a loss or two the Bowl Conspiracy Series will have to put us in the big game or face a pitchfork mob.
What an awesome schedule to propel the CMR dynasty (tragically, required to succeed in the current system).
GO DAWGS! Stomp some PAC-10 guts!

With the talent Georgia has been attracting on Campus, that should be expected. I will go further to say that the overall results should have been better, no way should they have lost so badly to the VOLS and USC last season, neither should they struggle as much as they did against USC this year. The talent is there but it is time the coaching and play calling step up to improve and showcase the talent.

Gamecockgary,
I don’t know if luck is the right word. Under CWM and very similar to Coach Kines UGA has ran some soft coverages. Hopefully putting players in position to make plays on the ball in the air.
Also the fumble you are refering to as luck. Well Mr. Curran had to read his keys to be in the right place to make that place. That is not luck, that is a high football IQ. Curran as a sophomore is perhaps the most sound defender we have had since Pollack.
I appreciate your fandom and your support this weekend, but lets be real. UGA made the plays it had to to win the game. Enough said.

The Truth, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Tennessee, and most of the rest of the SEC have a little bit of talent too doofus. Its not quite that simple. If it were that simple LSU wouldn’t have lost to Kentucky last year. Florida wouldn’t have lost to Michigan. Tennessee wouldn’t have been clownstomped by UCLA earlier this year. The list goes on and on. There is more to the game than recruiting genius.
Whenever Richt is praised for something you can almost guarantee some nimrod will come up with some ridiculous argument about how he isn’t that good because he hasn’t won every single game he has ever coached. Short of going 94-0 during his career its hard to imagine what would impress clowns like this.

Greene’s pass to Verron Haynes is the single most important play in Richt’s head coaching career and a defining moment in UGA football history. As Richt points out, without it he may not be at UGA in ‘08.
When rebuilding a program and going from a losing mentality to a winning one, you’ve got to have a seminal moment where the first domino pushes into the next and starts a sea change. Beating UT on the road was that moment for Richt and Georgia.
Now all we need is to finish the drill and push that last domino over signifying a National Championship.

I’m sort of wondering why the Dawg blogs always attract the UT Fallen Queers fan base. It would be nice if those mouth breathing, inbred imbeciles would just have the decency to stay off of OUR blog. I know, it’s a jealousy thing; however, it would be nice if the UT faithful would just pack up and move back to hillbilly land and stay the fork out of our state. That’s hardly going to happen since the only jobs available in inbred land are: hog farmer, poultry house supervisor, trailer park manager, catfish fryer, pit bull breeder, mullet hair stylist, ATV repair boy, pickup oil changer, deer hunting guide or drug dealer. Get ready to have your azzes handed to you this weekend by T-Bone and crew, ya bunch of Vol cheering sphincter-faces.

A number of Instructor positions in the state’s technical schools were eliminated this week as was the inter-library loan service which shares books among the university system’s libraries.
While research and teaching, the real function of the university, continue to absorb the impact of funding cuts, the glorified phys ed teacher, Mark Richt, receives $2.8 million and numerous incentives and perquisites.
When one wonders why the public universities of the South remain the worst regional institutions in the nation one might consider why. Football is religion and the bible thumping Richt is more valued than any university professor or their work.

That glorified phys ed teacher oversees a football program that will generate almost $80 million in revenue this year. That is where his paycheck comes from. His paycheck does not come from the money that funds the academic functions of the university. You are barking up the wrong tree. You are talking apples and oranges. If you were half as smart as you thought you were you would probably know this. So you have no point. This problem is a little bigger than the football coach anyway don’t you think?

Pequod, The reason “the glorified phys ed teacher” is so highly paid, is because he EARNS it. And the University system benefits. College foootball brings in WAY more money than it takes from the general fund. Tickets and TV provide many scholarships and funding for people like you that must spend their life in the Library. Having said that, I went to UGA for its academic value. But do not mistake the direction that the money flows in college athletics. It flows from Football to the school, not the other way around.

It was losing to the Gators and UT almost every year that got the previous two UGA coaches fired. Richt knew He would have to break the UT jinx to have a shot at a SEC title and keep his job. The bottom line at a program like UGA is winning. That goes for LSU, Bama, UF, AU, and UT. There are two national title winning coaches in the SEC now that find themselves in must win situations, Fulmer and Spurrier. Fulmer is facing a UF team that, at least on paper, blows him away. Can he pull another rabbit out of his hat and make the SECCG with another early season loss? Spurrier has lost to Vandy two years in a row. He is 0 and 2 in the SEC with a long season ahead and Clemson waiting in the wings. Can he survive a losing season? Have they forgotten how to coach? No! Ironically Fulmer may have done his best job of coaching in ten years last year. Spurrier made the Dogs play his game last Saturday and kept the overmatched Gamecocks in it untill the last play. However, all that matters in the SEC is wins and losses.

Pequod,
You’re obviously an idiot.
Otherwise, you’d know that Mark Richt is not employed by the University of Georgia.
Nope. Not employed by the University. Has nothing to do with university funds.
He is employed by a private business. It’s called the University of Georgia Athletic Association.
They are separate from the University System.
The money Mark Richt makes doesn’t come from the same coffers that supply the University. It can’t. It would be illegal if it did.

Those who are thinking this game will be a Bulldog blowout are either over inflating the strength of these Bulldogs or are under valuating the ASU Sun Devils. The actual truth is no doubt somewhere in between. Traditionally, road teams don’t do well in these situations. We speak of the Dawgs great road “success”. Uh, when was the last time Georgia played west of the Mississippi River? This team has NO history of success when they have to TRAVEL. What is the longest flight in the SEC? All SEC games are played in the same geographic area so weather is not an advantage to either team. It should be right at 100 degrees at kickoff, with the ENTIRE game being played in the 90’s.
It will take the Bulldogs the first half just to get their bearings. All I’m saying is NOT so fast, my friend.

All Dawg hatery aside, Richt really does an impressive job on the road. Only 4 losses on the road in 7 years? That’s pretty incredible. Compare that to Urban Meyer who lost twice on the road last season, Philip Fulmer who lost 3 times on the road. Again putting all Gator and Vol hate aside, both Fulmer and Meyer are good coaches and they both almost equaled the number of road losses in one season that Richt has had in his entire coaching career! I’m not asking everyone to like the Dawgs, but give respect where respect is due! If the Dawgs are coming to your stadium, you better be prepared to bring your A+ game, or you might be in for a long day.

I don’t think a loss this Saturday would devasting to GA. First, it’s not a conference game so it’s not going to hurt there chances of winning the SEC, which is huge.
Second, it’s early in the season and I don’t think they will drop that far in the polls if they slip against ASU. However, if OK and USC run the table then its to the Sugar Bowl again and all the hype starts again next year.
But of course a win would keep us on the path to Miami.

“Richt’s Bulldogs are at home on the road”
The Bulldogs may have a great road record in the SEC, but let’s face it, they have NO record of GOING ON THE ROAD. Nobody wants to bring it up , but this is a game of the great unknown for the Georgia Bulldogs. Mark Richt is just going with his gut with regard to the team’s travel schedule, on no stadium walk-thru, keeping the clocks set to Eastern time, etc. He has no experience as a head coach and no UGA template to draw from either. That is why if the Bulldogs don’t come out on fire and immediately take control of game, ASU will. ASU will have emotion and crowd on their side. In college athletics, it is not always the best team and the team with the best athletes than come out on top. So many other variables come into play. Just look at last night’s game between W.Virgina and Colo., Tenn vs. UCLA, Cal vs Maryland to name just a few games this season that have no gone according to script. Stranger things have happened.

Yeah, go teach some more mind bending classes as I’m sure your students will turn out to be pillars of the community. What a joke. What a lame. Pffffft!!!

WOW, DawgPen!!! Way to put that retarded Pequod or PeeQueer in its rightful place! Well stated and I’m laughing my rear end off!! Don’t worry about GT fans like that. Maybe they have to try to make up for the fact that their football team will get waxed again this year by UGA. I would hate to be a lowly tech fan. Ugh!

Not a problem, Eric. I think that low life is a UT fan instead though. He/she is probably hugging his/her scented pillow right about now in dread of his/her team getting blown out this weekend. I hope UF hangs 77 points on the toothless, ridge-running rednecks!!

I can’t get over the Fallen Queers thing. That is just too funny. No more calling then the Vowels now.

Samie, good point. We will just have to see how CMR performs against the mighty, mighty PAC-10, won’t we? I hope that you will be watching the game provided that your trailer park’s huge, ugly dish is able to receive it and that you are current in your monthly payments. Please drink plenty of fluids (Pequod recommends beer, I suppose) as you witness the Bulldogs totally owning the ASU clowns.

Mark: Remember June 1977? Riverfront Stadium, dead center field under the scoreboard. Tom Seaver’s first game for the Reds vs. the Dodgers and Tommy John. Great night, even though the Reds lost. Great to see that your path has been so successful since the days of Garden Court.

Yes, Ed. I do remember that night. My girlfriend (now my wife of almost 26 years) was with me. And I still have fond memories of the Garden Court Apartments.
Thanks for checking in. Hope you’re OK as well.
Travel update: I’m in Dallas, waiting for my flight to Phoenix. There were a slew of Georgia folks in the Atlanta airport, but only a few on my flight here. Just heard from Chip Towers, who’s going out to eat with Tim Tucker in Phoenix. He asked if they should wait on me. Given that the flight is 2 1/2 hours, I said no.

UGA KILLS!!! This will end up as another “why not play somebody good” game. “Didn’t they just lose to…” Whatever. Until you beat us, STFU!!!

That is so sweet, Mark. Please pardon me while I spin around and barf in my trash can. Are you hitting on Ed??? I think I just might puke again!
Travel Update: Nobody really cares where you are, dude. Just be glad that the AJC is picking up the tab for your boondoggle.

Mark,
I was wondering if you were traveling out. Keep the updates coming! Can’t wait to start the tailgate and the grill over here in South Carolina for the game!

‘voice of reason’, who is your team? The Dawgs have whipped pretty much everyone in the SEC. Until you name your sorry azz team, STFU, pansy!!!!!!!!

CoachDonnan, it could be a lot worse. The AJC could have sent that intellectual giant Terence Moore.

CoachDonnan, Are you retarted? I started by saying UGA KILLS! Is that not a big enough clue as to who my team is? I think you need to get back on that short bus and try to learn a few things. Until then, eat a dick b***!

Win or lose: ASU is a great start. GA and other perennial favorites need to play each other in out of conference match-ups. Who wouldn’t want to see a ND, Penn State or a Southern Cal between the hedges during the regular season? Anyone? Plus, GA is a great road and traveling team…there’s a lot of nice places to visit outside of GA in September. Let’s make this the norm, not the exception. OK, so everyone has a loss maybe two, but it doesn’t mean an undefeated Air Force team is going to play for the NC. Cliche #1—You gotta play the best to be the best…..

AJC and Mark
The following is not my post and I would never call someone “retarded” no matter how derisive their comments were. Please take note of this imposter.

Don’t know why it posted me as P Dawg but as long as CoachDonnan knows that “voice of reason” and “P Dawg” are one and the same, it doesn’t matter.

By sheer coincidence, I’m at the Georgia team hotel. (Sports writers love Marriotts because of the points, and apparently so does Mark Richt.) Just saw Claude Felton downstairs. He told me the team is leaving for the stadium at 2:45 PDT. It’s about a 12-minute drive, I’m told.
I would imagine your AJC crew will leave even earlier. We don’t get a police escort.
It’s hot out here. But you knew that already.
